ANet pushing its forced group/instanced content has been a major irritation for me since launch – it’s the primary reason I became disillusioned, and spent several months out of the game, last year. I’m actually only hanging around now for the WvW tournament, because I missed the previous couple. If ANet don’t fix this issue by the start of LS2/ part 2, I’m giving up on them completely.

I’m not exactly sure what the issue is. In what way are they pushing content? And what content do you mean?

By “forced group/instanced content”, I’m referring to Dungeons and Fractal-style content. By “pushing”, I’m referring to efforts to channel players into those locations by connecting them to other content (such as the arbitrary inclusion of a token item from the Fractals vendor, in the current LS scavenger hunt).

To me, Dungeons and Fractals are as distinct from Open World or Story content as WvW & PvP. It’s fine for them all to have their unique rewards, but this cross-over nonsense is irritating in the extreme (and yes, I am aware they’ve done it before).

Some of you can pretend otherwise, but this isn’t like Legendary crafting – ANet clearly intended for everyone to pursue Mawdrey, or they wouldn’t have spent this last half-season throwing components at us, in lieu of any other meaningful reward.

I’ve never posted on the forums when it pertains to players voicing a negative option that I don’t agree with because everyone is entitled to their own option. But now I feel like I have to say it baffles me at how much people complain about free content and how they want everything for little to no effort. It’s very strange to me, I must say. Yes, I’m currently grinding through the process to get the back item Ascended, and it can be frustrating at times, but what in life isn’t truly enjoyable without a lot of hard work that you can be proud of putting yourself through?

You know what baffles me? When people ignore everything said; argue with their own spin on a subject and always seem to finish with a lecture stemming from that bizarre work-ethic-cult-mentality, that seems to have consumed so many gamers.

On the subject of “little to no effort” vs “hard work” – my opinion is that it’s perfectly fine to desire content that takes time to complete, but nobody should be advocating doing things they absolutely do not enjoy, in a game!

ANet pushing its forced group/instanced content has been a major irritation for me since launch – it’s the primary reason I became disillusioned, and spent several months out of the game, last year. Please forgive the snark at the beginning, but this issue and the predictable “you want everything for nothing” type responses, just makes me very angry.

HOLY MOTHER OF A DOLYAK!

Still complaints about having to run 5 mini-dungeons on the easy setting? To get an ASCENDED backpack only necessary for that same mini dungeon on higher levels, anyways?

……………………

I am speechless.

Lots of faux-indignation that anyone would complain about an arbitrary Fractal req, tacked onto the only semi-interesting reward in the current LS, is what’s leaving me speechless.

It’s going to be hilarious if ANet expect us all to continue trudging through the next half of season 2, only to get more parts (+random tat) for a backpack they’ve already alienated some of us from pursuing.

Remember, we are the same community that hated on dungeons being forced through the monthlies back in 2012, and that was way less important than this – if only because ANet should have learned from their mistakes.

How about a “permanent charge” that you apply to a particular item skin, then that skin becomes free to apply across your account? That wouldn’t need to be so rare – it could be a gem-store item for say 300-400 gems? I’d be interested in something like that – especially for novelty/festive skins, that I don’t necessarily want attached to gear all year round.

I’m actually an advocate of allowing people to play the game the way they like and I understand that “we have to do something we hate, so why shouldn’t they too” is not really a good argument.
But I think it puts some of the comments that doing 5 fractal runs is no big deal into a different perspective compared to what fractal runners have to go through.
Btw. I don’t say that this is the only motivation for people to say “why not do those measily 5 fractal runs?”. Just an easily understood reason for some of those comments, I believe.

That’s why I asked you wether you were a supporter of dragonite through fractals.
In the end, we will have either to abide by Arenanet’s policy in the matter or choose to play a different game or do without something we would like to have/do.

Ah, I see. Personally, I’ve long settled on not doing things [in games] that I don’t enjoy, even if that does mean going without or walking away. I once tried an “if you can’t beat them, join them approach”, when the GW1 community was divided over “Eye of the North”. It was viewed by some as a few hours of actual content, padded out with rank grinding and HoM trophy hunting. I eventually buckled down – did all the ranks, acquired all the destroyer weapons, a silly number of armors and trudged through the blasted dungeons. I can’t say I looked back on the six months or so of grinding fondly. Whatever it is that “work” seems to add to games for some, just never seems to trigger in me. I won’t do it again.

I also don’t think it’s very good for the devs if we just accept (and do) whatever they put in front of us. We’ve heard time and again that they pay a lot of attention to “the metrics” and there’s a certainly a perception that they never actually listen, borne out by Mike O Brien’s need to post and argue otherwise.

So if I complain about the current LS reward approach, but go and run the 5 Fractals, and maybe buy some gems – what does ANet take from that? I think they pay more attention to numbers, so in that case my actions would put me in the “this project was a win” blob of data, despite being on the brink of walking away from the game.

So I’ll complain, I’ll not do the content and I’ve funded “Belinda’s Greatsword” with gold (it’s not like I have an expensive new backpiece to spend it all on).

I’ll offer you a compromise: Be vocal about getting your mists stone via a different route, maybe even the mentioned dragonite ore. And in addition be vocal about changing the rewards for fractals to include dragonite ore, or at least allowing fractal runners to trade their excess relics for dragonite ore.
That way you and the fractal crowd have something to agree to.
A common cause is always better anyway.

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Well after reviewing the list of ascended backpieces on the wiki, now I get it. I guess ascended backpieces are mainly supposed to be a fractal-centered item.

That’s an understandable conclusion, if you looked at a page like this one:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mystic_Forge/Equipment#Backpieces

But most of those back items have alternate (non-fractal) recipes now (you just have to click on each backpiece page to see them). The only real exception has been the Fractal Capacitors, but I, for one, am perfectly happy with that arrangement.

Why is it bad to give people a variety of things to do in order to work towards a goal?

Why is it bad? We seem to have gone from meta-rewards that rewarded participating in the latest story/update to “rewards” that are nothing but tokens to push players into unpopular old content. That’s not just bad, it’s insulting.

I don’t get that attitude from players in GW2, at all. You should show mastery of different aspects of the game in order to qualify for something extraordinary.

Uh-hu. You and I view that backpiece rather differently, I think.

This is only the light version (5 fractal relics, seriously?), imagine what you’ll gonna have to do when precursor-crafting goes life.

I imagine I’ll have to do nothing at all. What use is a precursor to someone not crafting a Legendary? Do remember that on a forum not every individual shares the same complaints. I’ve never asked for precursor-crafting.

I like that you have to do specific and not generic things to work on that item. It points people to things they woulnd’t see otherwise, which is a good thing. The requirements are really low too.

I consider it an action to exclude people and show no respect for what they want to do with their time. I personally have little issue with exclusive rewards for different aspects of the game (so long as they’re aesthetic), but this cross-over garbage makes me angry. If ANet wanted this to be a Fractals reward, the process should have began and ended in Fractals, and not included something with a unique function.

I know ANet and their stauncher fans like to present it as positive encouragement, but to me it’s an imposition that I simply won’t tolerate.

Raire.7983

Which fractal only backpieces?

There are a few, but this is one that started out with only the recipe which required a “Vial of Condensed Mists Essence”, making it Fractals only:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Quiver_of_Swift_Flight

Did ANet change the WvW-requirement for 100% map exploration? No they didn’t, even though people complained for ages (I like to assume every now and then people still complain about it, but not in the forums)

Did ANet made the WvW-Jumping Puzzles into a non-combat zone? No. Instead, they even added LS-achievements which required you to go through Obsidian Sanctum again and again.

Oh, ANet has made some terrible decisions – that WvW kites one in particular was an absolutely garbage move, and one of the reasons I quit the game for several months. If ANet don’t listen, then I guess I’ll be looking at another extended break (although likely permanent, this time).

Never changed something like this? What game are playing?

They’ve added alternative recipes to a couple of the previously Fractal-only backpieces.

They’ve added most of the S1 rewards for laurels.

Perhaps most significantly, they’ve added the Arid achievement track to PvP – which awards a fossilized insect on completion. Remember all the complaints about that item? The result has been an alternative method of acquisition. And rightly so – games are for fun, not ruining your evening, grinding rubbish you can’t stand.

Wait aren’t these the same people who are crying for anet to implement a scavenger hunt for precursors? I wonder if they are aware that a precursor scavenger would make the time/difficulty of this one look tame by comparison…

Nope. That doesn’t even make sense. How could those who don’t want to run instanced group content be “same people”, as those who want a precursor for crafting a legendary? Think about it.

To make both backpieces you need map exploration, Jumping puzzles, mini dungeons, fractals and craft. Oh wait, so everyone that dislike Jumping puzzle is excluded from this too right? and also anyone that dislike map esploration btw.

Anything open-world is fine by me. Fractals (and dungeons generally), on the other hand, are not on my to-do list. I’m just not up for forced-grouping/non-scaling content for reasons discussed many times before.

Crafting seems to be optional – those components can be purchased from the TP. Exactly as it should be, IMO. I tolerated leveling-up crafts for the Ambrite weapons, but I still think crafting is a mundane chore and the only way it makes sense to me, is if there’s opportunity to profit for those who do it. It should never have been forced and I’m glad ANet seem to have backed-off on that, at least.

So many delicious tears. More content and rewards like this please!

Glad to see we’re getting some very mature input, from the not-at-all-toxic dungeon community. Keep up the snide remarks guys, and remember – it’s not winning people over, it’s driving them away that counts!

…ANet must really love having fans like you guys.

I think its only fair, any ascended backpiece requires you to do fractals in the first place.

That’s not even remotely true. You can make many of the backpieces without going into Fractals now. There are alternate forge recipes that ask for 250 Bloodstone dusts, instead of the Vial of Condensed Mists Essence.

Examples:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Book_of_Secrets
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Quiver_of_Swift_Flight

And the Sclerite Karka Shell never needed Fractals to be ascended, nor do those of the the human gods.

I liked some of the new mechanics, but after a couple of bosses it just gets too chaotic. And even though I can respect an increase in personal challenge, when you couple it with a need for map-wide cooperation, the game just becomes a boring exercise in futility.

As an example, I enjoy the overhauled Golem Mark II event. In that case the increase in difficulty makes the event more personally engaging. Tequatl and this on the other hand, are just dispiriting. The likelihood of failure (or poor reward) as a result of things that are out of the individual players direct control, is just too high.
