i don’t know about WvW, you might have better luck dumping the cats and going with the birds (they move a bit faster with their swiftness buff) or a ranged pet like a devourer/spider?

the damage won’t be worth it then, the point of speccing BM traits is to empower your pets and you taking the support role.

and currently, drakes and felines are the dps pets.

Birds are more than worth it and hit often, birds and more so ravens provide some of our best burst which is far more important in PVP than DPS.

how do ravens provide burst damage?, i thought stealthed panther is best,

Regarding birds, put 10 points in skirmishing for the 30% pet crit damage and press F2 on the raven(raven currently has the highest damaging F2 of the birds afaik, also blinds which is nice) and you can get upwards of 6k from it easily, highest I’ve gotten was about 9k on some glass build thief, even without that crit they are by far the best burst anyway due to birds basic 2k precision meaning they crit often.

If you want to go bm and make sure your pet is actually getting damage off, go sword/x (I prefer warhorn but offhand is personal preference really) evasion tanky build, take the aoe vigor on pet swap for birds in the BM tree, since you’re in melee range as soon as you swap pets your pet is on the target and also the sword basic chain is a 100% uptime 50% snare for when you need to land that burst.

Just sit there dodging their big hits with while your pet is hitting away.

Jaguar stealth (100% crit chance), 30% extra crit dmg, quickening zephyr >>>Raven.

Maybe in that one instance, but you’re forgetting the very very low cooldown of the birds F2, as low as 6 seconds for some.

Throwing away birds just because one cat is very good is silly.

yeah, the eagle has 4.5 second cooldown on his F2 when traited, which is pretty awesome, but i just dumped the whole “my pets is the damage, i’m the support” kind of BM, it doesn’t work very good, pets can have really unusual behaviors, and when they act weird i’m just sitting there doing nothing useful, so i respecced 25/0/15/0/30 and using twin devourers with high Healing power, toughness, and condition damage boost to pets.

Cleric armor builds

RapidSausage.4620

So i’ve recently got my first exotic set, all Cleric’s stats (healing power, toughness, power), and i tried beast master builds for WvW and didn’t work out too well.

since the set is expensive, i can’t get a new set so soon, so i’m looking for WvW builds that would be really good with cleric armor.

Any suggestion?

@OP,

if your opponent is running from your pet, your pet is doing its job. if you really want to stay on top of a target that is running from you, you need 1h sword. GS is good too but it doesn’t have 100% uptime cripple like 1h sword. use “about face” to double leap chase with sword 2.

shortbow is a great chasing weapon as well, but it doesn’t have the same gap closing potential outside of short cripple & backside stun. combine both weapons for best chasing—cripple with shortbow, then swap to sword and leap-chase.

i’m all for these suggestions, except none of them work in WvW because i’ll get instagibbed if i melee even with durability stats.

thieves can travel at +50% while stealthed, i’ll just let that sink in.

pets run faster than +50% with SotH and much faster than that with Sick’Em active, i’ll just let that sink in as well =D

afaik:
SotH +25%
Sick’Em +40%

yeah, pets run faster than players do, wanna know how to test this? hit F1 as you’re closing in on an NPC it’ll freaking book it and get to the mob long before you do.

Not to mention that when me and my friend (whose a thief with the stealth trait) CnDed me and i just targeted him and hit “sick’em” and the pet closed the gap, and knocked him to the floor before his stealth ended despite him running 50% faster than i can in the opposite direction (well 25% because i use SotH)

i may have to test this.
i don’t like sick’em in WvW because you can lose track of you target pretty fast, and therefore your pet as well negating the effect of the skill, i’d rather use SotW or SoS.

Asura Vs. Sylvari

in Ranger

Posted by: RapidSausage.4620

RapidSausage.4620

The Norn and Asura racials are certainly the most useful. Norn have invisibility and the Asura have Pain Inverter. The Charr are alright I suppose, with their Fury shout.

The Sylvari used to be the best though. Grasping Vines used to be exactly like Entangle, but ground-targetted at 1200 range. It was perfect in combination with Barrage. But Anet nerfed the skill into the ground together with plenty of ranger skills. Now it’s single target only, and goes on cooldown if the target was out of range. I never use it. I guess it could still be really nice in WvW in a 1v1 in combination with Entangle though.

i think it’s quite nice with axe/warhorn and shortbow, especially useful if you’re a BM.

Asura Vs. Sylvari

in Ranger

RapidSausage.4620

tl;dr Pain Inverter doesn’t really fit with ranger profession as well as a mesmer or guardian.

i haven’t played asura but, AOEs have a target limit of 5, so a PBAOE that applies 3 stacks of 5 second confusion on 5 targets, on a ranger it pretty much doesn’t add anything, since you’re mostly ranged and pretty fragile close range.

If you want to make use of pain inverter i suggest you play mesmer since they have a trait that increases confusion duration by 33%, not to mention they pretty much rule the scene with confusion inflicting skills.

By far the best utility skill the sylvari has is the root skill, it’s a single target skill, 900 range, lasts 7 seconds (that’s 7 second of immobilize), it’s basically a single target entangle with less cooldown.

when it comes to elites i think the Asura win, the golem that you can jump in (i heard) is pretty nice.

quick question (short bow) (PVE)

in Ranger

Posted by: RapidSausage.4620

RapidSausage.4620

the way i see it, the shortbow is a dps weapon, bleeding is a bonus.

i run full berserker, and it’s great.

Shortbow is both DPS and condition. Good damage and good bleeds. With my gearing and traits, I can maintain 15+ bleed stacks on a target without issue. And since I am running rampager stats, I still have high enough power that I hit pretty hard as well.

to me, PVE is farming, i never really do any dungeons, so tagging is top priority for me, and berserker gear + SB 1/2 second autoattack are the best tools for that imo.

conditions can be somewhat good in dungeons since there’s only 5 people, but in open PVE your bleeds will hardly be of any use when many of the skills in the game apply bleeding and the mob already has 25 stacks.

The only real PvP experience I have is sPvP, and the only advice I can offer is if your enemy is using a melee weapon.

Given how much of our defense is mobility based, it’s really easy to fall into the habit of letting the other player ‘lead’ and end up bouncing all around the playing-field with your pet trailing behind. So, what I’ve found that helps a pet to land attacks is….well, frankly a notion that’s pseudo-suicidal and completely counterintuitive.

Stay still on purpose.

I’m not saying try and approach fights by straight tanking, or eating a 100 blades to face to land your F2, or that flanking or getting behind somebody is off the table. But I am saying you can’t dodge and outrun everything, so I’ve found it’s better to get hit on your own terms and make those moments work towards a greater goal, than falling into a pattern of reaction and being unable to maneuver your pet into a favorable position because of it. Speccing BM comes hand in hand with some defensive benefits for the player, use that to help you survive pausing the motion of combat in controlled intervals that you coordinate with your pet’s offensive bursts.

it’s hard for me to count the cooldown on my pet abilities to coordinate on this level, i just want to keep my enemy in a comfy position for my pet to maul, and prevent him from escaping (eles and thieves escape like they have jetpacks)

i can keep my pets alive just fine, but even with the shortbow and speed buffs/snares, all my pet does is run around to catch up with it’s target, i honestly don’t know what to do, shortbow snare is 4 seconds and it only slows the target down, pet speed boosts work to some extent, but it seems to want to get into a certain position relative to my target, so it doesn’t always attack the target even when in range.

i end up having my main dps down 90% of the time.

how can i aid my pet unleash its fury on my enemy without derping like this?

p.s: i use panther and lynx.

Awesome Trick With 1h Sword!

in Ranger

Posted by: RapidSausage.4620

RapidSausage.4620

i used to use the sword to escape like that, but i found that it’s not always very reliable since sometimes you’ll roll in a direction other than what you expected (at an angle rather than directly towards the camera).

if you want defense i suggest GS, if you have Auto-targeting off, you can use skill 3 to cover almost the same effective distance as sword #2 in less time (the distance you take to face the enemy, use the skill, look back, and use the skill again, is roughly the same as clicking GS #3 once with no halts in between).

another tip, i like using lightning reflexes with SB #3, it’s like a longer dodge.

lightning reflexes doesn’t always yield great results, and there isn’t exactly a blink or hard CC removed (immobilize, daze, stun) other than Lightning reflexes and healing spring, which aren’t always available on demand.

is it better for a glass cannon to take traited signet of stone or is it better to take Signet of the hunt and QZ and LF with 10 in WS?

I purchased a full lvl 80 rare set of Berserker armor, weapons, and jewelry (slotted armor with ruby crystals), and 30/30/10/0/0 traits with longbow and sword/axe.

with the longbow i’m quite ok, but when trying with the sword i hardly do any good damage, and the evade is basically useless since it has a relatively long cooldown when matched with the evade duration.

i wanna know how to make the most use of my setup (full burst dps) without having my enemy run with a sliver of health.

Opening strike

in Ranger

Posted by: RapidSausage.4620

RapidSausage.4620

I find this trait unexciting in terms of it fitting with the marksmanship trait line theme.

Marksmanship is the pure damage trait line for the ranger, and it should stay like that, now, what opening strike does right is the 5 stacks of vulnerability part, what’s not very right imo is the minor Grandmaster addition to it, which makes opening strike always crit.

If a player need crit chance and crit based effects, Skirmishing exists for that reason.

My suggested modification is to make the minor grandmaster trait inclict 3x base damage (or 3x damage in general if it’s more suitable) of the first attack that hits.

Incredible skill delay in WvW

RapidSausage.4620

Server: Piken Square [EU]
Conditions: SM zerg vs zerg

Many people from the zerg i was in said they were having about 10 seconds skill delay when in the general vicinity of the inner SM walls (and anything within its radius), to a lesser extent between inner and outer wall, but the general theme was incredible skill delay.

Some blame the culling update for this, and to be honest i sort of agree, since i’ve had more troubles in WvW with the new culling than the old one (my fps dropped by 10 in zergs, from 29~31 to 19~23).

What is going on?, is ANet aware of this and responded somewhere?

I think most people run with Warhorn in sPvP cause I always have stupid birds eating my face. But in WvW all you hear is whistling noises. Im starting to see more SB Rangers running with zergs than Eles, at least on my server. But it is a decent weapon for open field. It has a snare, a disengage, and a stun. And if you rock a high crit build it can mow people down.

i like running rampager gear and using the “arrows pierce” trait.

quite fun vs zergs and allows you to be effective against all classes (unlike pure damage vs warriors and guardians)

toughness or healing power?

in Ranger

Posted by: RapidSausage.4620

RapidSausage.4620

when i weigh Toughness vs Vitality vs Healing Power i go like this.

Vitality > Toughness
Toughness is great vs direct damage only, vitality is good vs direct and condition damage but not great.

healing power is as good as the heal that benefits from it and your choice of toughness, vitality, or other defensive tools.

for example, if i have healing spring, i will probably be specced in a ranged build with some pet aids, and i probably will take toughness because healing spring already removes conditions.

But if i’m a beast mastery build, i’m more likely to be using troll unguent which is a HOT, meaning i don’t expect to be burst healing myself out of a tough situation, so i’ll most likely take vitality.

don’t forget that all classes have a form of stun break.

Melee ranger

in Ranger

Posted by: RapidSausage.4620

RapidSausage.4620

i’d say melee ranger is for chasing, with a dagger offhand you can cripple at range to catch up, and evade in close range, while with sword you have a cripple on chain skill to keep that enemy in range with cripple, and it has a leap to also stay in range, and another poison with evasion.

GS has a long range leap and range cripple with evasion on chain skill, overall it feels like the melee version of the shortbow.

to me, all ranger melee weapons scream “chase”

i find the torch and warhorn best used with an axe (because of lack of utility with sword alone.)

greatsword/sword+focus is pretty strong if utilized properly

that’s what i’m currently using, the problem is that mesmer AOE comes from phantasms, and you can’t get out a phantasm unless you target an enemy, while all other classes can ground target them, allowing them to time the aoe right to tag the mob.

let alone targeting a mob manually takes time.

Yes orr events farming is a nightmare for mesmer especialy since we can’t launch a phantasm on a mob that is invul. Now mobs there go from invul to dead in 1sec, son you can you use sword 2 and mind wrach to try and tag the event but you won’t get any loot with that.

Karkas are really easy to farm with focus and feedback however, just go in the cave near the spawn point and hope noone will be launching the event.
