It’s not just the stat difference, if you’re wearing a set of superior runes and go under water, when the game swaps the breather for your helmet you lose the 6th bonus (because you are now technically only wearing 5/6). Not a huge deal depending on the rune set or if you never fight underwater, but worth considering.
Hilarious, I always thought that the centaur runes I used to run were bugged underwater. I couldn’t get the swiftenss buff b/c I was losing the 6th rune bonus (swiftness on heal). Now, I feel like an idiot, lol.
the only thing that would force me into underwater combat is underwater kills for daily, escaping, traveling, or farming coral.
if you want swiftness underwater just use a spear.
Yeah curtain can be sketchy if you put distance between yourself and someone from higher ground. I just love the usefulness can apply retal to self our group w/ blast, can interupt people from finishing teammate, pulling people off walls/clidds, reflect wall which has helped with rezzing downed teammates(don’t wanna use feedback on own team lol save it for the enemy!). Warden is another one which is reliable in certain situations but if there is aoe its useless other than to shatter him asap.
I just felt more in a grove when using this setup vs staff but we all have different play styles.
Yeah I don’t run with zergs usually guild runs so 10-15 at most vs zergs.
i only use focus out of combat for the swiftness, but that’s about it.
Yeah aoe does suck for the warden when at gate taken fort/keep. Vs Open field zerg I’ve never found it a issue and I do enjoy his reflection. I do miss the staff for the chaos armor which I liked but on a 35s CD 5s duration I decided to go with focus to reflect dmg back to target every 20s w/ curtain & have retal giving dmg on receiving dmg as well as the confusion stacks. I mainly went this setup due to our server being the small kid on the block and we’re always outnumbered so with the reflecting wall I would reflect all incoming damage to group vs applying confusion to people who target me only with chaos armor.
It’s just a slight change in playstyle and has been working out well for me since dropping the staff.
with staff and glamour you can get at least 3 chaos armors, 2 of which solely come from your staff, maybe try use chaos storm on your team, i find it very good if used defensively, and you can use it with your phase retreat to apply 5 second chaos armor to yourself, you’ll still keep your #4.
the thing with focus reflection is it’s very dodgy, temporal curtain is so low to the ground many projectiles (especially from higher ground) just pass through it, and warden is only good if he has time to use his reflection, and even then, melee will decimate him.
i tried to stay away from relying on an entity existing in the fray of battle to apply confusion, but even then it’s me who has to get in to get off the shatters.
p.s: i also tend to run with a smaller group from my guild rather than zerging.
Straight to the point.
Which is better for confusion, duration or damage?
As I mentioned givers is broken atm so I don’t get that 20%(I get 33%20%40%) so if I spent my tokens on cof weapons that would be 90 cond per weapon(180) pushing me past your numbers atm. I am just not willing to buy new sigils etc and keeping my current weapons for the fix.
the nice thing about confusion is that it doesn’t suffer from +duration like bleeding and burning and poison.
the three of those don’t benefit from fractions in their duration (i.e a 1.5 second burning only does damage every 1 second, so the 50% duration is wasted), but confusion relies on skill use, meaning it can still do damage in the extra fractions of duration.
my point is, you don’t need to feel obliged to go 100% condition duration if you rely on confusion, if you were using a staff that would’ve been great, but you’re not using a staff and therefore not applying any conditions other than confusion and the occasional burning, so i wouldn’t worry myself about giver’s weapons.
As for lower condition I just jumped in game and at 1525 and 1775 w/corruption stack. My main is a cond duration engi and I went that route cause looking at the math from posts 50% duration > 300 condition dmg in output. So 100% duration with 175 less cond dmg from your numbers. I know you will get bigger ticks for 5s.. and I will get slightly lower ticks but for 10s.
Now I know my ticks are slightly lower but I always pair up warden(Whirl finisher = Confounding bolts) when I drop null/feedback so I actually apply more ticks than you which last longer than yours and doesn’t require the target to move in/out of the feedback/null(which with temporal curtain you can force them in/out if you liked).
Retaliation for me is just icing on the cake and a utility that I have available.
with traits and food i get +89% duration on my confusion.
and i don’t have to worry about my warden dying to the immense AOE.
(edited by RapidSausage.4620)
your condition damage is a little low though.
the with my armor and consumables i have a base ~1700 condition damage, that’s 1950 with full corruption stacks.
relying on the enemy to enter/exit your glamours might seem bad at first, but when you’re ikittenerg it’s harder to see null field, not to mention that most people who see feedback/null field will not assume it is traited to apply confusion, and they just might pass it without using any skills not knowing they’re get confused.
with your build you shifted the damage from confusion to retaliation, but that requires you to be in a more dangerous position, which in my opinion mesmers shouldn’t do.
but if it works for you that’s great
off topic: Is there by any chance you’re from Egypt???
Nope. “Zamalek” is the nic-name of Carling Black Label in South Africa.
i see
Glamour blind + confuse on blind + glamour specialization + condition damage = goodbye zerg. It also = goodbye mesmer in 1v1.
The only problem I have is that I need to run a focus for a reasonable amounts of mobility – I do use a torch if at all possible though.
Very similar to yours: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgEQNAW7dlwziqXVTsGa9IxJFKv5oec9qbdSKgNqB;T8Ag2yuEcJlS1lSKqvMfJ+yKm7L5XrFGLsZA
AC gear makes a good ‘starter pack’ for this build. Get rid of the chill (hydromancer), the AOE range for it it pathetic – especially considering you are a ranged character. I initially had it in build as well and found it just doesn’t work at all (especially if you consider “Shake it Off” etc.).
Be warned: it is very much a glass cannon (as is yours).
- At the start of a fight dump feedback and veil into the enemies. Bonus points awarded if you can pull if off while they are moving (Confusing Enchantments).
- Wait 2 or 3 seconds and then dump null field into them.
- After maybe another second try and get your timewarp set up so that it covers both allies and enemies.
- Don’t neglect your other conditions (staff attack and chaos storm, mostly) as if you have condition damage boosting armor it’s a waste to ignore them.
I routinely get confusion “damage bubbles” of 2000+ against zergs. I routinely get slaughtered by solo lvl 28s.
the reason why i didn’t pick veil is it doesn’t have much to offer if you don’t have +1 sec invisibility trait, the range of it is shorter than null field and feedback so you have to get dangerously closer, and it is very hard to apply the blind with it.
with mirror images you get an escape tool (pop them for distortion), you can use them for cry of frustration (4 stacks confusion right off the bat), and if you’re 1v1 you can pop them with your staff to save your phase retreat and to have 2 clones apply conditions to your enemy.
the reason why i picked Hydromancy sigil is because it has similar range to the prestige, it also lasts 3 seconds, which is exactly the same duration as the prestige, this way i can keep my enemies in close range for my blind and burn and my mirror images+cry of frustration combo.
as for the staff, while winds of chaos is strong, the attack rate is very slow, and to be effective with it you need 2 clones at least, this means that outside a situation where you have time to apply multiple stacks of your conditions, it’s just better off not to rely on it, i instead use my chaos armor, it applies a stack of confusion when hit, and it also applies blind which in turn applies confusion.
off topic: Is there by any chance you’re from Egypt???

Imho it is the absolute best, some say it sacrifices utility for tagging capability, but it is the exact opposite.
Feedback is one of the best wvw group oriented utility there is, along with null field, both of which provide the AOE that the mesmer desperately needs.
Along with a staff and scepter+torch, you can take on 1v1, and groups, and be able to play defensively and offensively with the same skills.
i’ve tried berzerker builds, i’ve tried mantra builds, shatter builds, and pretty much everything out there, but when i want serious WvWing with my guild, i go glamour.
in case someone’s interested, here’s the detailed build i use:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgMQNAW7fl0zqq3UTqGb9IxJFMv5oecdrXdSKgNqB;TkAqmMNJay2krJZTrKGLsBB
(copy paste link, don’t click)
for gear i use full exotic rabid set, along with rabid jewels and weapons, for food i use quality tuning crystals and super veggie pizza (use master tuning crystals and rare veggie pizzas if you can afford them).
how i use the skills: find the most clumped up group of enemies (preferably a zerg you’re about to engage) and cast feeback at an enemy in the middle of their frontline, this will apply confusion to the frontline, while reflecting projectiles of the backline, then use null field anywhere you want, sometimes i hold onto it when i feel the situation can get intense again.
after using those 2 i usually run into the zerg, switch to scepter/torch which triggers the 3 second chill, i immediately cast the prestige while close to a group of enemies, then use mirror images, switch to staff, phase shift, then F3, i then cast my chaos armor and run back to the safety of my group, the timing isn’t specific, i sometimes use mass invisibility to sneak into a zerg to do my combo, so you gotta find your own way of doing this.

i can confidently say that most players don’t take into account underwater combat when setting up a build, it’s just not that significant to consider.
Don’t worry, the Ascended item from WvW will be an Aquabreather.
what is this…aqua breather you speak of.
is it that white underwater headgear that i have not upgraded ever since i created my main at game launch because it is the most useless piece of equipment in the game?
You know you can get lvl 80 three-stat aqua breathers, and that they replace your helmet while underwater, right?
yes i know, but underwater combat is not as intense as land combat, not to mention the helmet stats are not very high as chest armor for example.
Don’t worry, the Ascended item from WvW will be an Aquabreather.

There really is nothing else to do with badges after you get the Gift.
you can buy siege with it, but considering the cost i doubt anyone will be using hard earned token for siege when he can just spend an equivalent amount of silver to buy one (to me 24 badges are more valuable than 24s)
i had the same problem with my mesmer, bought 2 heavy armor pieces.
later i found out that you can transmute them with another item, that will make them salvageable, just transfer all the stats and runes with the trasmutation stone, and choose the appearance of the non temple armor piece. That is one hell of a way to waste a fine transmutation stone tho.
perhaps, but you don’t exactly have much of a choice other than this, what else are you gonna do with that armor??, destroy it?

I was under the impression that Ascended items were being added to the WvW vendors. Not sure where I got that from, but if it’s true then it had better be the stuff that’s already available or there will be an outcry from all of the people that will be “forced” to play WvW.
“Forced” to play WvW?
lol worry not. Anet love PvErs too much.
They WILL NEVER ask PvErs to grind/farm WvW for an Ascended Item like how Pvpers gotta grind Fotm to get a Vial for an Ascended Backpack.
You are well protected there no worries
i think the reason ANet is focusing so much on PVE is because of GW1.
GW1 had superb PVP, but PVE wasn’t all that good once you finished the campaigns, so they’re trying to fix that by giving PVE more attention in GW2, but they ended up focusing completely on PVE and ignoring WvW.
I think they definitely need wvw ascended items. but i think badges is the worst way to provide them. To do so punishes those who spent them on other things, while rewarding hoarders.
i don’t see how this punishes anyone.
with laurels it’s the same thing, you’re hoarding laurels in favor of getting a pink instead of other things, same thing for guild commendations.
so far the only thing badges are used for is buying siege, invader weapons and armor.
what happens when you get all this?, you save your badges.
They said ascended gear would eventually makes its way to WvW. Since they want to control how fast you can progress, the gear will most likely not be available using any existing currencies, since they don’t want you to immediately get it. I can see them adding older ascended gear for badges, since everyone should have it by now, but not any new stuff.
If I were to guess, I’d say WvW ascended gear would be tied to the new WvW progression. If they want to make the gear primarily for WvW, instead of having offensive/defensive upgrades on them, they might have new WvW slots, which only affect WvW. Those upgrades could then be purchased with badges. The gear could also be, but it’d mainly be tied to your WvW rank.
i think it’s only fair that any ascended gear obtainable through WvW be available only through WvW even for a short while.
I was under the impression that Ascended items were being added to the WvW vendors. Not sure where I got that from, but if it’s true then it had better be the stuff that’s already available or there will be an outcry from all of the people that will be “forced” to play WvW.
Also, Flame & Frost heavily implies that something is going to happen to Southsun Cove.
I’d like to see the WvW update coming up have ascended helms and gloves or something on the vendor for whatever WvW thing, then put them on the laurel vendor too.
Just once, I’d like to see the prime way to get something to be what I was actually doing anyway.
while i agree with that, i’d prefer seeing all the ascended gear obtainable by PVE means, available for badges of honor and a nominal currency fee.
I’ve been playing GW2 since the betas, and it was all fun and games until the dungeon grinds appeared.
Patch after patch ANet introduced more and more rewards and stat upgrades through dungeons, and dungeons only, the ones worthwhile anyway.
With the introduction of laurels the situation got slightly better, it’s only slightly better because acquiring a single pink with laurels requires 25 dailies of the 30 each month, AND the monthly achievemnent.
For someone like me who has limited play time, i don’t want to waste that time everyday grinding for such a thing, i want to play GW2 to have fun, not to have a power struggle with other people.
I play WvW mainly, and i love it because i get to have fun, all the while not being constrained by an objective at the end of the line, i’m free to leave whenever i want without feeling i’m losing on anything, dungeons don’t do that, dungeons can take up to an hour to do properly, and it just gets too boring.
ANet, for the sake of your players, do not put all the rewards in one aspect of the game, WvW has been the same since launch, no new maps, no new events, or even visually different borderlands (all look the same and full of snow), and the rewards are not worthwhile (the armor is not special, the skin exists in the form of masterwork, and the stats are craftable).
I honestly hope that the WvW patch brings Ascended gear in exchange of Badges of Honor, and some spicing up to WvW because as much as it is fun, it’s becoming boring.
it also wouldn’t hurt to start building up on Southsun cove, there’s hardly anyone there, introduce more world bosses, and make them give better rewards.
illusionary cannon for skill slot #3, channeled skill that animates a cannon around the pistol and fires a high damage shot or a shot with knockback maybe.
anyway it may be done, i’d like for it to stick to the magical projectile theme.
I can see where you’re headed with this build. It’s a great start, though maintaining confusion could be difficult. You’ve got a lot of skills that will put on a stack or two of damage here or there. Because of condition removal and retreating into the zerg, I find confusion is most effective when spiked. You’re already traited to accomplish this with shatters.
Your clone/illusion output might be a little low (especially considering how fast clones die in a zerg). The scepter is a mid range weapon though. A good place to start might be swapping out the signet for Mirror Images. Pop them when you’re in close range and then immediately use Cry of Frustration. If you get all 3 clones to hit, that’s 6 stacks of confusion (2 each) instead of the 1 stack the signet is offering. You can maintain confusion by also throwing Mind Wrack out there (1 stack each this time). Paired with your other skills, you’ll see confusion up a bit more.
Also, be sure to keep Chaos Armor as much as you can. It’s the only staff skill you have that’ll inflict confusion (because of the blind), and you’ve got plenty of ethereal fields to use Phase Retreat on for the leap finisher. The Prestige is supposed to be a blast finisher, but it’s currently bugged as of this patch. Devs have responded to this bug though, so hopefully it’ll be sorted out next patch.
i did switch to mirror images prior to reading your reply.
beyond that i don’t know what to do to improve on the build.
Link your build OP please.
Due to the short duration of confusion it is hard to get 25 stacks if that’s what your getting at.
i’m not aiming to get 25 stack of confusion, i’m aiming to keep a few stacks of confusion up on several targets at once.
I run a WvW confusion mesmer with staff and scepter/torch, feedback, null field, and the boon percentage signet (the one with an active blind), and all traits related to glamor, blind, and confusion.
i use tuning crystals and pizza, and i have superior sigil of corruption on my staff, full exotic rabid equipment with some being rare.
can someone tell me how to maximize my confusion in zergs and still be effective in small fights?, and if you have suggestion for alternative traits please do share.
GS #2, Staff #1 and clones, torch #5, and phantasmal disenchanter.
Imo these bouncing attacks should jump between you and enemies or at least have 1 bounce to you at any given time.
as a CD staff mesmer with boon duration i’d really love to make use of my #1 staff might/fury, i never ever get to have any of these boons for me, this is especially sad for WvW.
is it possible to cast the prestige in the middle of another channeled spell?
if i cast the prestige and then hit an enemy, will i have my stealth removed and activate the second effect, or will i only lose stealth and the effect activates at the intended time after 3 seconds??
oooh mesmer has an op skill, better fix it fast.
how come thieves don’t get their backstab builds fixed to not do OP damage!
Do we really need to explain that there is a difference between an obvious bug that lets you circumvent the CD if a skill by nearly 90% and a build/profession perceived as overpowered?
no need, i just wanted to complain about thieves.

i use this to farm Penitent camp and Shelter’s gate in cursed shore.

full berserker works great for that.
with GS cast #4 followed by #2 followed by a dodge and then a mind wrack.
switch to sword/focus, and depending on whether the mobs are dispersed or not, either use #5 (non dispersed) or #2 (dispersed).
sword/focus are also used in conjunction with mirror images to produce almost guaranteed maximum effect shatters and provide even more damage because you’re face to face with the mobs.
the signet is for a situation where a second wave of mobs spawns and your shatters are still on cooldown, it also helps keep your zerker phantasm alive to get early hits to secure tags.
the only time i feel obligated to go beyond 20 points in dueling is if i am going an all out direct damage setup with max domination and a GS.
other than that i just take “clone on dodge” with rabid gear.
i’ve seen a lot of hate towards glamour build because they’re “too easy to use” or “too intuitive to create”
well let me tell you, it’s like any build, usually easy to learn, hard to master.
glamour builds aren’t just about tagging, they give the mesmer some much needed AOE damage, while allowing for survivability and single target damage.
with scepter/torch and staff, plus feedback and null field and mirror images, you can apply so many stack of confusion that will sicken a backstab thief, and catch those lightning surge eles off guard or prevent them from escaping, all the while providing ethereal fields for your teammates to apply confusion with projectiles, or mass chaos armor with blasts.
each has its uses.
GS is focused on pure damage against single targets with not much defensive utilities.
Staff is focused on sustained damage via conditions against multiple targets, and has more defensive utilities.
i’ve been using full boon support mesmer for a long time now, nothing new for me here.
if they removed confusion damage for “on dodge” damaging skills, there’d be exploits everywhere, eles and warriors and engineers..etc speccing for endurance regen and dodging everywhere.
no, confusion working properly, nothing to see here.
Clones: Look just like you, they are not transparent, and only cast 1 the first skill of the weapon you have equipped at the time they’re created, they don’t deal much damage, but apply conditions under certain circumstances (staff clones cast staff skill #1), they’re mainly used for shattering, and they are easy to create on usually short cooldowns, clones have low health.
Phantasms: They are temporary pets that deal high amounts of damage every certain duration, they are semi-transparent with a pink hue, their attacks are not related to your weapon like clones (eg: off hand focus summons a phantasm with 2 axes that casts a skill similar to ranger whirling axe), they have higher health than clones, and usually have higher cooldown than clone skills.
Illusions: Refer to both phantasms AND clones (traits can be specific on which one it affects).
2 handed weapons have 1 skill that summon a clone, and 1 for pahntasms.
1 handed weapons have 1 skill that summons a clone. (with the exception of scepter)
off hand weapons have 1 skill that summon a phantasm.
Here’s what i use for all the whiners:
-Super veggie pizza (36% increased condition duration at 1/4 of the price of rare veggie pizza).
-Feedback and Null field traited for cooldown and duration, Mirror images, mirror heal, mass invisibility.
-20/0/0/20/30, all confusion and blind related traits.
-Scepter/torch and staff.
-full Rampager.
i use staff for AOE support along with the glamours, and escapes, plus pink bubble is awesome and applies both blind and confusion which synergize very well with the build.
scepter and torch for single target and PbAoe blind and escape.
Month ago I went full rabid scepter + focus with a pure confusion galmour build. It’s a strong antiZerg build and good 1v1 (versus bad players tho).
But i was a bit bored by dealing confusion damages only. In some situation confusion build really sucks.
I love playing with Gs as a mesmer because of AOE potential. Thats why i made this build.
When i need focus, i just manually switch to it
with rampager gear you can go with OP’s build AND use a GS and be really effective in zergs and 1v1.
you can ever take scepter and TORCH if you have full centaur runes (with mirror heal you can keep swiftness up 73% of the time (i did the math)).
here’s the thing with rangers (my alt is a ranger with healing power gear), if they spec for healing, they usually spec for some beast mastery as well, they can last surprisingly long when their heals are up, but when the heals are down, it’s up to their pets to take their conditions off them and provide survivability.
there are 2 types of regen rangers, ones who use troll unguent, and those who use healing spring.
Troll unguent heals the most out of their 3 healing skills, but does so over 10 seconds (can heal for over 1k per second for 10 seconds).
Healing spring heals for half of troll unguent initially, then heals via regeneration for 18 seconds total while also removing conditions.
Then there’s the many traits that grant regeneration, one of them increases duration by 33%, not to mention boon duration from speccing in nature magic, and damage mitigation in wilderness survival (protection and regeneration on disables/conditions, pet takes conditions from him every 10 seconds).
so here’s what you can do, you can wait for their heals to end if you’re having trouble taking them down, or if they’re bothering you with their damage, use staff skills, they’re awesome for escaping and controlling the fight.
One powerful tool you have is confusion, ranger sword #1 has a fast attack, and this type of rangers rely on cripple on sword #1 and pet swapping (they gain 2 seconds quickness when they do) to do damage, so make use of that by stacking some confusion on them (scepter #3 for example) and use chaos armor as often as you can (applies blinds to him and boons to you).
Rangers lack on demand condition removal, so using snares is very good.
@OP: i had thought of utilizing glamour skills like that before, but i find that berserker equipment is unnecessary, you can go full rabid and replace the GS with Scepter and focus, temporal curtain is an incredibly useful and versatile skill, and scepter #3 is great for single target damage spike, and would be even more awesome when combined with full gear CD.
Hey Rapid. Give this a try and see if it gives you the kind of success you are looking for.
0/10/30/0/30.
Important pet traits:
-30% more crit damage on pet crit
-Master’s bond
-bleed on feline crit
-the 30 BM healing trait-Use the speed signet, rejuv signet, sick ’em, and entangling roots
-Use a Jaguar
-Use Mango pie as food
See if that gives you the pet damage and the survivability you are looking for. Also, I highly recommend the Dwayna runes for this type of set up…
For the “speed” kills…lock someone in entangling roots and hit F2 + sick ’em.
i have tried a similar build, didn’t work out too well :/
So i’ve recently got my first exotic set, all Cleric’s stats (healing power, toughness, power), and i tried beast master builds for WvW and didn’t work out too well.
since the set is expensive, i can’t get a new set so soon, so i’m looking for WvW builds that would be really good with cleric armor.
Any suggestion?
I use the same build in WvW and it works out great. I use LB/Sword and Dagger for wvw. Pets depend on whether i’m taking camps or not, if I’m in a zerg, i use drakes, taking camps solo, I use cats.
Be sure to use signet of the wild, as you get a great boost to the passive with healing power.
you’re using the same armor, but what about traits?
my current trait setup is 25/0/30/0/15, with sword/warhorn and SB
Personally, I find trap builds lackluster in WvWvW. There’s just too much open space and too much movement for our relatively small traps to be very good at anything outside random 1v1s and the occasional choke situation.
I use Muddy Terrain to good effect without having to commit to a full trap build.
I’d like to hear from other WvW Rangers about their builds.
well, before trying out my fail BM builds, i ran full berserker 30/20/20/0/0, QZ, SotW, LR, Entrangle, healing spring, longbow, and sword and warhorn.
so Lyssa or Balthazar set? Lyssa is for more precision + condition duration and Balhazar more power and more fire power
you have to get the different armor pieces from different temples, no temple has a complete set of one stat collection.
meaning you’ll have to get gloves and leggins from a temple, head and shoulders from another, and if i remember correctly, rabid (condition dmg, power, prec) chest and boots are not available from temple karma merchants, you’ll have to get those from TP (armor pieces like mhenlo’s boots..etc.)

i will of course do some adjustments of my own, i just needed someone else’s insight on the same ranger archetype that i’m trying to achieve.

i had a build that focused on keeping me alive while healing myself and my pet while my pet dishes out big numbers, but it didn’t work as it sounded on paper/tests because pets are clunky (let’s be honest about it, pet AI is kitten .
My build works fine with it. I see that the movements are mechanical because it is not user controlled, but besides that, nothing wrong with it for me.
in case you haven’t read, i’m focused on WvW.
I have read.
