The leaderboards would have more competition if Anet would add more achievements (both skill requirement and grind requirement) that it becomes humanely impossible to do everything. Otherwise as I said earlier everyone who competes at the top will be tied if you remove historical AP. There are only a handful of permanent achievements which prevent you from completing all permanent achievements in a few month to a year, especially if you open your wallet and trade gems to gold.
Sadly the reality is different. Anet is so slow at adding new achievements that many top players only miss historical achievements, 250k kills in WvW and 5k/10k wins in pvp.
I view the leaderboard as an iron man of GW2 and not a 100m race. It shows who has the most dedication and endurance to complete as many things as possible since release of the game. As people give up / quit more people who missed a greater amount of historical achievements will enter the top.

So, it’s still a convoluted way of “too bad, so sad, I didn’t want competition anyway.” Can’t have too many people threatening the fragile ego.

But if it is a competition/race of some kind, then it is meaningless without a level playing field. Hence, unattainable AP needs to be filtered out, or, the better solution, the leaderboards dismantled. Then there won’t be anything in there to complain about, especially when doing dailies was so, so hard before the 3/day;10AP change.

Or, is someone afraid to do the dedicated work of doing dailies every day if the cap gets removed?

Frankly it doesn’t matter what I want. Anet needs to figure out what way will keep more players playing.

Will a poll do that?……maybe.

If not a poll…how else do you determine.

A player poll in the forums/reddit isn’t really going to get a sample useful enough for decision making. It’ll get maybe 200 responses.

But, posing the question to players via an in-game vector would expose the problem and cause unrest (and more accusations of “zomg is this beta”), so I don’t see ANet actually getting any viable feedback from the players. And thus, nothing will be done. Get used to that 15k cap!
(I mean, I already have, so it’s no big deal, and I’m not even maxed out yet.)

The wardrobe unlock is a fantastic idea, and I applaud it making it to the box. I’m frustrated that this is still considered a rare drop, as I’d probably be willing to buy keys if there were a slot that guaranteed an RNG of the following:

  • Ticket scraps
  • Full Tickets
  • Wardrobe Unlocks
  • Mini Egg (and none of this account bound garbage…)
And I mean it. One of those in every box. Stop the wildly random foolishness.

Unless I am reading what you are saying here incorrectly, the GWU is actually a common drop.

What I don’t agree with is a “guaranteed” drop like the list you gave above. They might as well put them in the gem shop and sell them individually and not have them in the chest at all.

The chests were not designed to give great stuff all the time. They were made for the purpose of entertainment. If you play the lottery IRL and expect to win, then you almost certainly will be disappointed.

It’s a common drop, as listed, sure. But it’s also muddled in with semi-useless muck that I wouldn’t pay for. Thus, I don’t pay for them.

It’s not about playing a “lottery”, either. That payment model is unnecessary when there is a humongous wealth of digital goods to sell. Maybe we don’t get the exact skin/item we want because of RNG (have to keep players buying somehow), but we ought to be guaranteed something that gives us legitimate progress. ToT bag definitely is not. Express items are useful, but not progress.

So that’s why I specify the unlock items like Miniature Claim Ticket, Wardrobe Unlock, and Tickets/Scraps. Ideally, it’d look something like:
Slot 1: Common or Uncommon drop
Slot 2: Common to Super Rare drop (or maybe just Common to Rare)
Slot 3: Guaranteed account unlock item (mini, wardrobe, etc) chosen at random.
Slot 4: Surprise chance of Rare to Super Rare drop.

With my current account status, I could easily drop $100 and not fill the locked material I’m missing. Not that I’d spend that much (in one go >.>), but I’d be much more easily convinced to loose $3-$5 on a whim if I knew I’d get good stuff for it.

The achievement leaderboard shows a lot more than you think. And again as said earlier Anet never said the AP cannot be played as a competition.

People who were not around since the start can never catch up, so yes it isn’t a competition. There are so many points for LS1 for example that anyone that missed it can’t achieve. The achievement point leaderboard is a measure of nothing because no one can catch up unless they were there for every single opportunity from the start.

Maybe remove all the achievement points that are no longer obtainable from everyone as well as the daily and monthly and make the leaderboard a true competition.

It wouldnt be a competition in your definition then either because everyone in the front page of the leaderboard would be tied.
I guess that is what you want, maximum rewards for minimum efforts and everyone be the same.

That tired straw man again? What a bore.

Leaderboards don’t want competition. They want Special Snowflake status to justify inflated play time. If it’s not a competition, why does a leaderboard exist? If the leaderboard is useless, delete it. If the leaderboard should exist, then perhaps it needs to be purged monthly and old AP banked to prevent being a part of it. That would spur some real competition.

I’ve reached the cap and am extremely thankful that there is a cap. It means that I don’t have to chase some infinite AP source if I want to remain competitive on the AP leaderboard.

Like someone said, this isn’t a competition.

Anet obviously considers it some sort of competition else your AP would not be visible to everyone and make a leaderboard for it. “this isn’t a competition” is entirely made up by a specific group of players. Noone is forcing you to play it as a competition, but currently it is set up in a way that lets you play it as a competition. And for quite a few people that is one of the main reason to play every day for hours.

My gameplay should not be designed to be affected by insecure egoists with poor impulse control.
The people whinging about keeping the cap are the same people who couldn’t hack “earning 10-12AP” per day from the other daily sources. Well, here’s the result. 10AP for easy-peasy dailies, and more whinging about how “it’s not special enough”. Hurts the most when you do it to yourself.

It’s disappointing to see that whoever’s planning these boxes isn’t listening to the community or thinking about giving players good value for their money. It’s downright infuriating that these shoddy RNG boxes even still exist, but mostly that they exist in their form exclusively as an attempt to coax player spending.

Thing is, we’ve said what we would consider buying keys for, and I think an honest polling of the community would do a lot of good, if dev-management listens to it. 100 gems or $1.56 isn’t that much to me, so I’d be willing to pay for gambling boxes, if there were some guarantee of utility. And I don’t mean an access item and a leveling tome. :\

And I sure as kitten don’t mean a single trick or treat bag when they tumble out like Halloween candy. If the seasonal gifts are going to be a thing, they ought to be a small stack, at least 20. Selling that stack for less than a gold offsets the 100 gems or 28-30g it takes to buy a key. (Or rewards a once/week, currently bugged, level 10 key run with.. very little.)

The wardrobe unlock is a fantastic idea, and I applaud it making it to the box. I’m frustrated that this is still considered a rare drop, as I’d probably be willing to buy keys if there were a slot that guaranteed an RNG of the following:

Yeah, as it is, keys still aren’t worth buying, because it’s RNG just to get the “guaranteed” RNG item. Is meh. Nothing for the special snowflakes to qq over.

In what new zone have we needed to spend more mastery points than they’ve offered in the zone?

To clarify, I meant “more” as in “increasing”, not “greater than”. So far, Bloodstone and Ember Bay have been good for me filling out the last of my HoT masteries. I’m grateful for it. But seeing the escalating pattern of masteries has me worried that with the next map or two, mastery costs are going to exceed mastery payouts.

I might be worrying over nothing. I’m likely worrying over nothing, but ANet has made me wary with questionable design decisions in the past. So far, aside from raids masteries (a different thread entirely), I’m maxed out and have mastery points to spare, so I’m not panicking over it.

Neither are the vast majority of all the other ‘achievements’ in this game.
I’ve seen you state this many times, It’s not going to happen, nor should it.

If we removed AP from every achievement that’s not really an achievement, then getting decent AP rewards would be pretty much impossible.

You are wrong. Look up the definition of achievement, even trivial stuff such as killing ambient creatures can be considered an achievement. Trivial does not necessarily contradict the meaning of achievement. Mind you I am not against adding (more) harder achievements you can be proud of, I suggested that many times. It is just Anet that chooses to keep adding 95%+ trivial achievements. There is definitely something wrong if Anet releases a living story episode (for more hardcore people this extends to raids, too) and you can complete everything in one evening.

So doing 3 lousy little things for dailys is less of an achievement than visiting the tailor for cultural armor once?
It is actually very easy to smear dirt on most achievements:
*Raids. You got carried.
*Dungeons. You bought all of them.
*Open world: You loitered around, gave a volley with your longbow and got the kill.
*ls2. You got carried. Funnily enough, most people actually were carried to their season 2 reward in my guess.
*Jumping puzzles. You bought a mesmer.
*PvP. You got killed nonstop but captured points. Or people carried you.
*Wvw. You were afking while your castle was attacked and your pet hit an invader in defense.

There are a few of them that show both commitment and are trivial all at once, like every kill 5000 creatures with certain weapon.
Some are just trivial like logging in for a beer that is brought to you by mail.
Doing adventures is an actual achievement by this standard because nobody can carry you and you can´t buy it if you stay true to the rules of Anet. I don´t know how many of these actually are in the game, maybe 1000 points?

Having said that, the cap is just stupid and people who had to hunt every AP of the list of dailies should probably ask themselves what´s wrong with them instead of asking for a cap to protect them from themselves.

Whew! Very rightly said.

The problem with how the daily achievements are now, is how much AP they award. If you can get 10 AP by doing the simple tasks needed for the daily then most of the other achievements are automatically rendered worthless. Why try to do something that gives 1 AP and takes hours and not get 10 AP from the daily which is simpler than a lot of the other achievements?

The 10AP is a reward so high, I feel some borderline guilt for getting it. I realize it was there to simulate finishing 10 of 12 dailies from the older system, but it’s overcompensating with how easy the dailies are now.

No cap and 3AP would be my recommendation. And probably fix some of the too-easy or time-dependent ones in PvE. And of course give consideration to the newer achievements based on how much time/resource they require to attain. Right now, the point values are all over the place, and it’s discouraging.

[Feedback] Latest Black Lion Chest changes

I appreciate that ANet added something of real value to the Black Lion boxes, even if they’re still pitiful RNG. $1.56 for a random account unlock, if that were guaranteed, I’d be cashing in on a few keys per month. Probably, anyway. I’m a lot more likely to do it now than I was before the change.

But the ToT bag is a …not quite a slap in the face, but it’s really underwhelming. For what keys are worth, 20 bags would still barely sell for a gold on the trading post or just give more useless holiday items. So why one bag?

They’re adding more mastery points with each living story episode.

They’re also requiring more mastery points with each episode. We’ll see how well the trend continues going further, but I’m expecting a point deficit in later maps. Might be paranoia talking, but we’ve been backhanded by ANet enough times to realize that the “extra” points in Living Story 3 might not be as extra as we believe.

Though, to be fair, I kinda don’t want to see the times nerfed, for as obnoxious as they are for glitch-ridden, untuned content. I don’t even have gold on most adventures, but I understand that some people want the special feeling for making gold. I’m okay with preserving that. Rather, Mastery Points ought to be moved to Bronze and Silver, and then never again considered for “toy” content like this. (Maybe Bronze, if players need to be coerced and tricked into “trying” them.)

And question for OP: Have you taken the dive into Dragon Stand? There’s a ton of mastery points there, and a run down the three paths can give you a huge boost in completing the core HoT masteries. It’ll be rough to get in, but make use of the LFG and taxi into the One Good Map, and you should be able to get a few runs per week.

Howler

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Part of the problem is the floating wolf head doesn’t follow the horn when using the skill, so my warrior gets a faceful of wolf-fog instead of me seeing how awesome it is. The howling itself is a bit subtle, and it still plays the horn’s other effect on top of it, so if we could ditch the “whomp” part of it and just have the howl, that’d be great.

Auric Basin chests Trolling

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Looks like it was just one NPC so it was probably a case of someone not stopping to think when they need to sell the junk and sigils and runes rather than a troll.

There was two different chests with merchants inside them. It’s happened a lot over the last month. Trolling or not; an exclusion zone would stop this.

May or may not be done on purpose. I usually see a merchant pop up in front of the last chest, which can be considered a courtesy, but at the same time, it has a bad habit of blocking the chest unless you walk all the way behind it.

That said, bolded part is fully agreed with. Player-created spawns should never overlap with other interactables, including other player spawns. Range 100 would be sufficient, probably.

That one mushroom HP in Tangled Depths?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Meh … that HP sucks but it’s like it is unique in that respect. GW2 is just not the game to play if you want well designed fights.

Considering the combat system is probably GW2’s strongest point, that’s really depressing. But yeah, encounter design is one of GW2’s weakest points, which is even more depressing. And it’s not just the HPs, but even some of the basic enemies that just aren’t designed well.

OP nails it with his assessment, though. Huge AoE bombs in a small corridor on a champ is a sign the devs rub their hands going “huehuehue” whenever they put things like this in. The one time I recall doing it (I hate TD, so I don’t go there much), it was me and two others. We pulled the queen out a bit to the broader area of the corridor, giving just a bit of room to dodge and flank. Ended with the other two downing/defeated and me scraping by on a thief. Lots of distractions with Thieves Guild and Ambush.

Banners: Can we finally get these updated?

in Warrior

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I mean the effect of banners is far better (individually) than Facets. But the CD is insane, I’d much prefer to see that cut in half. Ofc the duration would need to be shorter, 90s is far too long for sPvP anyways.

Yeah, when ANet tweaked banners, they focused on uptime% instead of usability.
90 sec up with 30 extra seconds of downtime? That gap is way too wide.

75 up plus 15 cooldown maintains an acceptable uptime% while closing the gap enough to make re-using them less painful.

If we’re thinking that banners should lose their ability to be picked up and treat them more like spirits (keep them immune to damage/influence by enemies), then we’d be looking at much shorter durations and cooldowns, 30 sec up plus 5 second gap in between effect ending and cast (35 sec total cooldown). Warriors can still define battlefields without having to drag the banners and their relatively useless skills around.
Add on a secondary bonus per pulse (to simulate what Skill 2 would normally do), and it makes for a strong skill all around.

Banners: Can we finally get these updated?

in Warrior

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Issue with banners is that they are all the same, with the difference if only skill 2, which is super weak.
Banners need some QoL work.

This is probably my biggest problem with banners being carryable. Dragging them around to go from location to location is useful for quickly re-establishing a battleground, but doing so punishes the carrier with some semi-useful utility and a pathetic auto attack. Why bother with Skill 2, even it were buffed, when you have no other use for it?

Banners could definitely use some buffs. Laying out a bit of stream of consciousness here.

The TL;DR:

  • Skill 1 / 3 / 4 / 5 all need upgrades to make carrying less punishing.
  • Make Skill 2 more standardized and useful. Convert to Shouts for more synergy.
  • Trait lowers cooldown by 10-15 sec and increases Banner effect radius.
  • Burst skill for Banners.

Skill 1 – Currently too slow and not damaging enough to justify carrying a banner. Up the overall DPS into the range of Elementalist weapons. Add Vulnerability per hit (1 stack for 10 sec or 3 stacks for 5 sec, something like that). Give it oomph.

Skill 2 – Most of the buff ones aren’t so bad, there’s just no other reason to carry a banner to actually use them. The attack ones are fairly garbage. So keep to the spirit of the banner and make all of them boons. There’s some possibility in having the Skill 2 be a Shout, just for some decent synergy with the Tactics line.
As Shouts:
Defense – Protection (3 sec, 10 sec cooldown), Inflicts Knockback on nearby enemies.
Discipline – Fury’s good(-ish) as is. Maybe tack on a short Quickness (1-2 sec).
Strength – (Ugh, so bad…) 3 Might for 8 sec, Inflicts 3 Vuln for 6 sec to nearby enemies.
Compassion – Huh, Shout thoughts mean a lot of double dipping on HealPow for this Skill 2. I’m not sure how I feel about that, but I kinda like it.
Battle Standard – The Stability’s okay, but it feels lackluster for an elite. It feels like it needs something else to pair with it.

So maybe, maybe not Skill 2/Shout, but it’s worth considering.

Skill 3 – It’s decent, but tack on a “Removes Cripple/Chill/Immobilize” and it’d be worth grouping up for.

Skill 4- Useful for getting toward a fight while having the banner in transit. I wouldn’t mind seeing a damage or buff burst (small range, like 130 or 250) at the end just to make it a wee bit more strategic. I’d almost recommend making it a Leap finisher, just to pretend that Powerful Synergy is useful.

Skill 5 – Not that I miss Powerful Banners, but with the ability to drop it by weapon swap, and blast finishers not being that useful to justify waiting for a banner skill to come off cooldown, it really ought to be doing radial damage like it did with the old trait.

But that’s not all! Because the trait needs some fixing too.

Inspiring Banners:
Change Regen to pulsing heal. 250 per 3 seconds, 25% HealPow rate.
Decrease Banner summoning cooldown by 10 seconds. I’d prefer 15 sec, but it’s a preemptive compromise. The 6-sec gap before the trait was mutilated was too short, but 30 seconds trait or no trait, is too long. 15-20sec feels like the sweet spot.
While carrying a banner, increase the radius of the Banner’s effect by 300. (So Radius 900.)

And the cherry on top:
Give the Banner a Burst skill for Warriors! I’m not sure what it would do, but it would mean carrying the banner doesn’t utterly hamstring the warrior. I also want something hilarious for a primal burst, but that’s probably just me. :P

“The market” is such a broad term as to be useless. Overall, the trading post is doing an excellent job. The few sticking points happen to be T5/6 leather, mystic coins, and a few other odds and ends that are either vendor trash (sigils/runes and some crafting materials) or stupidly out of reach (ye olde precursor argument and some collection skins).

Leather and coins are getting the focus currently because of limited acquisition and widespread use.

King Size Candy Corn Node

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Hey, thanks for this thread. I had not noticed that the node being sold was an upgrade to the one I bought last year so I had ignored it.
Now I have twice as much to harvest each day. It may even pay for itself eventually hehe.

6000 candy corn in cost. You get roughly 6 per day. So it’ll pay for itself in 34 months. So.. sometime into the third expansion. XD

It might’ve been useful if I didn’t already have the Auric, Quartz, Bloodstone, and Sprocket nodes. I can get my Daily Miner with ease already, so extra candy isn’t so useful for the price.

Honorable Staff Bugged

It could be that it doesn’t count towards your boon duration cap so it doesn’t show on the stat bar. But it most definitely does work.

Did that change in the last patch? I did some testing by swapping between Honorable Staff and other traits, but I never saw a boon duration increase displayed at all. None of the durations listed in tooltips changed, and the boon duration on the equipment screen didn’t change either.

New Mastery Idea: Climbing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Didn’t WoW add a type of climbing with this last expansion? I only saw it mentioned once or twice but what it sounded like was a hook and line then climb the line.

Maybe something like that. You have a hook and line. You toss the hook and if it catches you can climb the line to that spot.

I think it was a specific class spec that got a hookshot. I hear rumors that it’s hilarious.
There might also be a toy item on a much longer cooldown.

Granted, I’d totally be down for some kind of special action that would let us climb, or just snare ledges that we almost but don’t quite catch.

And Charr get it for free, because claws. And payback for shoddy collision physics on jumping puzzles.

The Dreamer - Sound

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

3) Change the sound it makes.

I’ll admit, the first time I ran into Dreamer, years ago, I thought it was hilarious. Once.

Problem is, Shortbow skills on both classes that use it are very quick. 3/4 sec, if I recall right. So suddenly, “NeighNeighNeighNeighNeighNeighNeighNeighNeighNeigh” whenever one gets near me. And I treat that person as a leper or pariah.

That’s not particularly fair to the player. It’s not the player’s fault that the once-cute horsey noise plays on every attack. It plays one attack sound before the other is even done playing. That’s absurd. Give Dreamer an internal cooldown of a few seconds or only play the sound on abilities 2-5, and the problem would be solved.

Building on that, I guess have a counter of X times before it plays the horsey shot on auto attacks (ie, internal cooldown) and have a secondary sound that plays in between.

Why are Aggro mechanics purposefully Vague?

More anecdote:
Last night, I was fighting a White Mantle Mesmer with a stranger. She was fairly high on damage and the first to engage, closer than me. Mesmer still decided I was the one that needed to get hit. :\ Not offended at the damage itself (easily survivable), but I mean, c’mon, the ranger was right there.
I’ve a sneaking suspicion that the particular enemy targets the farthest enemy to make use of its Spatial Surge-esque attack.

The reason why HoT is terribly designed

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Rauderi.8706

For daily events in DS, you don’t need a full map. You only need four events. If you want to run the whole meta, you’d get there early and get into a map.

You do, however, need a map that will, at some point, get past the starting line. Which is my point. Show up at an off time, no events for you.

To be honest, it doesn’t even make sense for Dragon Stand to have a countdown timer until after the groups form and the meta actually starts. That would make it much easier for fresh maps to gather people, since a squad could form at any time, and it would only need 12 people to start.

No Points for Dailies after 19,950

Makes me wonder how people have 15k from dailies and only 5k from actually achieving something in this game. Daily AP should be removed entirely.

Nah. If it can’t be attained anymore, like all those previous festivals, they should be deleted and removed from AP totals.

Daily AP is the real show of dedication to the game.

they are achievement points not dedication points or “login and play for 5-10min per day points”

If we wanted to be honest about the name, they should be Ego Points. A far more apt description of how they’re used anyway. Or possibly Oppression Points.

Suggestion/Request: no e-spec out of the blue

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Yeah, no. PvE in this game is flipping mind numbingly boring.

Everyone’s bringing in arguments for their opinions, whats yours?

Evidence: PvP elites are automatically unlocked.
Evidence: Suspect derides PvE.

Conclusion: Must be Walk v Walker ironically complaining about boredom.

As far as the actual suggestion, it might be nice to have a storyline that leads the character through instances which can still trigger Hero Challenges as communes instead of boss fights.
If you didn’t want to do the story-led path, the HC points would still be available in open world as boss fights. That would be a great alternative without nerfing the group-up nature of the current ones. (I still consider them inappropriate for personal/character rewards, but the attempt to compromise is there.)

The reason why HoT is terribly designed

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I believe it was last week that one of the Dailies was Event Completion in Dragon’s Stand. At the time I was playing, there seemed to be 2 maps: 1 that was full and 1 that had a few people that seemed to be mainly trying to get into the full map. Not enough people to do the events. After a while of trying to get into the full map, I gave up on that Daily.

This has happened to me several times lately when I have tried to do things in HoT maps.

It repeatedly makes me think that map caps and how it handles possible space-saving is just done improperly. We need smaller map caps for “full” and possibly smaller taxi allotments in order to usher more people more naturally into maps that can fill.

If you get a fresh account, you don’t carry over the progress from the previous account. So think of the extra cost as a Continuance Fee or a New Game+ going into the expansion.

Otherwise, take Indigo’s advice if price is a concern. Scout for good (legitimate) deals, and you should find one at some point.

HoT is awesome (seriously)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I started off hating the HoTness, no lie there, and there’s a legion of threads to support why. But I’ve grown into a comfortable acceptance of the Magus Falls region after I got my full suite of mobility options.
While I don’t excuse some of design decisions even now, I no longer resent having collections and checklists that urge me into the region. The word “enjoy” is definitely a stretch, but the jungle’s kept me busy. A C+ or 6.5/10, a passing grade, with reservations.

It’s a big step up in map design, which is encouraging, and it was all done in a short amount of time, so kudos just for that. With a dedicated team and two-ish years of development, and lots of player feedback about HoT, I have my fingers crossed that the devs will accommodate that feedback into a much better experience.

Change it to “Prevents the application of boons to the target,” and it gets my vote. That means if Resistance is up, it still supercedes the Hex and boons can be accepted, but if Hex is already in place, it can’t be resisted without cleansing.

It also gives a corrupter/converter the chance to swap Hex for Resistance and vice-versa.
