Why ia build variety a joke in gw?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

People try to use shamans as healers in WoW? That’s news. :\

But anyway, build variety is a “joke”, as you put it, because there are some options or combinations that are overly good, where other options between trait paths don’t have decent synergy nor provide unique/plentiful benefits.
FG/PS, looking at you, by the way.

Will "missing" skills be implemented?

I wish they could put some effort into closing up the skill holes and finish putting tags on the blank ones. (Warrior forum would like Physical: Mending, please! Also, legit Healing Banner?~)
There doesn’t need to be equivalence, but the gaps in healing/elite utility skills is noticeable at times, especially when a healing skill doesn’t share a cooldown reduction or the elite options are already terrible and don’t match the other traits a player uses.

Sorry to tell you this (new dyes)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

You can preview all dyes in-game by checking ‘show locked’ in the dye menu. So if anyone wanted to see how it compares to other black dyes they can do that before buying it.

Meh, I will never understand this obsession with black dyes, they are so boring.

It depends what you do with them. I agree it’s boring if you just dye your whole outfit black (and I say that as someone who often wears all black in real life), but if you use them with other dyes it can look really good.

Agree. I need to get a true black to go with my orange for Halloween.

Might I recommend a Midnight Orange? Easier to get than DARK ABYSS OF YOUR SOUL BLACK, and it’s just as dark. And if it does show a little color, it’ll match your orange!

As a sidenote, they also need to replace all +boon duration and +condi duration with bonuses to concentration and expertise, once and for all.

The attribute system in general just needs a little polishing up.

When I saw the original post title, I was really hoping we’d re-open the discussion of the terrible scaling on Healing Power, and how Condition Damage is roughly similar. Condi gets a semi-pass because it defies armor, but the best scaling on it is Burning at 15.5%. Granted, add 1000 Condi to a Burn, and you double the damage, but it’s not intuitive.

thanks op, due to your post I just read a bit of lore from a link provided by another poster. now that I am a bit more informed, I think I would create an organization of humans and charr and infiltrate both sides that continue to fight. I would then direct my operatives to abduct the warmongering separatists and fire legion, then throw them to the front lines of the REAL battle, along with some weapons, and say to them “your choice”.

Or, we could get Scarlet Briar reborn from the Mists to unite the Separatists and Flame Legion under one banner, proud in their role in the coming …somethingoranother.
And then we’d never speak of either again~

Megaserver issue: HP train vs Meta

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I don’t understand why they didn’t just make them Elites instead of Champs. Elites seem to be a nice middle ground between face roll vets and group required champs.

Just removing the Defiance bar from most of the HPs would make them reasonably soloable. Champs almost universally come with it, where Elites still take CC normally.
While I’m glad that ANet figured out a better way to handle CC against monolithic enemies, it’s been over-used throughout HoT. Some classes not being able to blind/stun an enemy removes a good chunk of their survivability.

Sorry for the sorta-tangent, but it might help solve the problem by not making hero challenges “group” content. No need for HP trains means players can focus on meta events.

Dragon's stand

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

There are probably a large number of players who figure they should just be able to play the game and never go to forums, wiki, etc. who think that DS and lots of other content is just broken. Cause really if you have to go research content outside the game it is kinda broken.

This is kind of like saying “if you have to read the manual to figure it out, it’s broken.”

More like, “if you have to use the wiki, the designers were being lazy.” :P
But that’s high-minded game philosophy claptrap and not relevant to this particular topic.

Dragon Stand. Great map. Shoddy group execution. And we all know it.
Yes, one might sneak into the One Sacred Map if one tries hard enough, spamming LFG groups and trying to taxi via squad. It’s cluncky, and a player(ish)-driven mechanism to a problem that should be handled by the game’s internal systems.

The map could work in a way that didn’t actively encourage taxiing and rushing the map at just the right time. The biggest roadblock is the 2-hour cycle that enforces map closure, even if a meta never got started. Getting on at an off-start time basically means there’s no reason to do any organizing. Dead map.
Which is why I make the point that the timer shouldn’t begin until the three camps are populated. And probably add a victory buff at the end to squelch map-hopping. Making the meta available at any time would helps groups form up and make the map more playable.

As in, outside the cave, along with pouty Braham constantly pulling aggro on the boss when I need to play train-dodger with him.

I actually kind of surprised this conflict wasn’t caught through playtesting. I don’t blame the mechanics of the fight, just that the boss will pick a target, seemingly at random, to do its charge attack. I’d be fine with the aggro sharing otherwise.

Thank goodness for those JP dailies.
Did the usual two (y’know, home instance farm and Completely Safe Capital City Vista) and saw the choice between Vizier’s tower …Brisban Wildlands, one of the worst zones for that daily.

I happily did Vizier’s Tower, and I was even playing my mesmer that day, so I got to be the JP port guy! (Well, lady at the time.) Didn’t make a single copper off it, but I did get a lot of bouncy thank-yous. It felt good to be on the helpful side of the community.

Oh, I noticed quite a big crowd in Straits of Devastation as well. It seems like a lot of people were helping with doing the JP yesterday. You wouldn’t have happened to be around there about 6 PM PST, would you?

(There were a lot more people where green tag was)

I think this is a pretty good example of things going right. And next time I’ll remember to bring a mesmer for these things.

Looks like a different shard than I was on. And way more people down at the bottom.

Before the charr, humans ruled Ascalon.
But before that, the charr ruled.
And before that, it was the Grawl.
And before them, it was the Forgotten, right?
And of course, before them all it was the Elder Dragons. Not the forefathers of the current Elder Dragons, THESE Elder Dragons.

For any human to claim rightful rule over Ascalon is laughable at best, and an act of utter idiocy. It is insulting to the lives lost in the Foefire to forget that it was humans that killed the most humans in that war. No single charr comes close to the body count of Adelbern, who not only slaughtered his own people, but doomed their very spirits to an endless war.

If you wish to honor old Ascalon, turn your gaze away in shame and learn from that mistake. Do not charge forward to repeat it.

Whew! 12 stacks of Burning right there. Ain’t enough condi clear for OP.

Though, let’s be clear. Humans can’t even beat their own internal strife. Separatists and White Mantle both sap at any chance the mice could have of ever winning any war. And by war, I mean against the centaurs. …I repeat, centaurs. With wooden catapults and primitive weapons.
Yeah, go up against an entire race of furry war machines with their steel-forged war machines and see how that goes.

Ultimately, though, if it’s that bad … PvP, WvW, and the other three PvE dailies that are not event completion are available to you. Just skip out on that one if you need to, and do something else.

I do skip zone event completion. I wasn’t even aware yesterday’s was Diessa. My mind just overwrites it with blank space. I have PvP potions saved up, so I just popped one of those to get a reward track bonus, triggered the daily, kept the potion from the box and put that back in my bank.
Easy-peasy.

Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want the zone event thing fixed, but I work around it.

There’s part of me that wants to beg the devs to include a dailies tab for group-instanced PvE as extra options toward the daily. I know, we have enough already, so it’s a “would be nice” thought. An Instance tab could include dungeons (a +1 for the few still doing dungeon runs), raids (encourages more raid groups), and Fractals. Yes, Fractals have their own dailies, so it’s kinda double-dipping, but Fractal dailies also aren’t really connected to anything else, so they can be easily forgotten.
I imagine the chain goes: Oh, daily Fractal is up → Well, since we’re here, let’s finish the T[1-4] daily too → Get more Fractal rewards and AR → End up doing higher Fractal content. Might also be my wishful thinking. :P

Q, meet A:

A: Champ farm. :P

Basically, there’s a circle of bosses that the zerg will go murder, which means getting quick map rewards. When highly valued things show up there, the champ train zips around for quick event credit with relatively swift recharges. So when Giant Eyes end up on FGS… You get the picture.

I usually zip into the zone kinda randomly if I’m working on hero challenges for elite specs, and I’ve only seen a map spontaneously organize once. If there wasn’t that thought of “Oh well, timer’s started, might as well never organize” we might not have to worry about all the taxiing to get a second map to get started.

Kill Braham, Marjory off in story

Wow. When did knocking people around become a mature response?

I wouldn’t agree to it about Marjory, but to a Norn, that is the mature response. :P

I don’t even really see where the whinginga bout Marjory comes in. She’s a competent investigator and needed to be assertive with Commander to remind him/her about that.

Braham… I get the idea that he’s irrational from grief, but seriously, Commander has lost a lot more and ends up being this ultra-patient, almost mincing, paragon of patience. It’s unbecoming for some character backgrounds. (Blood Legion, rep!) Then again, a mega-hook to the chin isn’t a part of some others.

So, my big hope is that, when it comes to a critical moment that Commander actually settles Braham down, we get a choice of [Talk to him | Deck him]. We’d get the same resolution as an ending, but the dialog would be adjusted to how we get there.

I don’t think it’s worth tweaking the system to make it better. I’d rather see ANet spend time overhauling the system. There’s no particular reason why we can’t make arbitrary stat combinations and easily swap sigils and runes into ascended gear, other than that’s an artifact of the system we had at launch.

The last I heard, they were working on separating runes from armor. Or maybe I was confusing it with AR.

I’d heard that whisper about AR before.
Hadn’t heard anything about the runes, so I think we’re stuck with the system we have now, unless ANet’s being really good to us. (For character convenience, they have that as a habit, so my fingers are crossed for something awesome.)

I also suspect it was around Meatoberfest, which is a fairly active event area. Or maybe the little bandit quarter down near the JP.

Overall, Diessa isn’t terrible for events. But that’s Diessa. Try saying that about a zone without a decent event hub or quest chain to follow.

Also guys, as has been said countless times before, if you don’t like the event completer daily, do a different one. There are LOTS to choose from and you only need to complete three.

This is like getting angry because you don’t like that a restaurant gave you ketchup with your fries. Don’t eat the ketchup, have ranch instead and get on with your life. Problem solved.

If you don’t like a specific type of content that’s in the game (event completer dailies) then the answer for you is quite simple: pick a different daily and get on with your life. Don’t ruin it for everyone else just because you don’t want to participate.

sadly, we’ve been saying that for years.. no one cares, they prefer to let everyone know how ketchup ruined their fries

Or, some of us actually care and won’t roll over quietly for bad/questionable/undesirable design choices that promote frustrating gameplay. So we pull double shifts: we don’t do the shoddy event daily, and we give ANet advice on how to refine the idea.

To echo someone more considerate and articulate in these matters than myself (and to get away from the tragic analogy of crisps):

In NA, in the 3-4 hours after the daily reset, my experience has been that I can wander much of the map without finding any events — or I can map to the chat calls and live with the behavior that ensues as players attack empty spawn points and kill the mobs as they appear, before they get to move. Usually I make the third choice and go to WvW.

You’re free to think that deliberately creating a system that is going to result in players grossly outnumbering event scaling is fine. I don’t. Players have zerged content in GW2 since long before the current daily iteration. ANet had to know about that behavior. Design that is fine only if players behave atypically does not strike me as good design.

Something occurred to me while I was heading to/waiting for a hero challenge in HoT just now. The fight events that spawn are usually out of the way but are intended for groups. If you’ve got a mentor/commander tag, you can at least make them visible.

But it would be nice if there were a mechanism to announce a “Hey I’m about to trigger this event” or “I need help here” marker.

Sure, one could use LFG, except not many people look. Mentor tag is easy enough to get, but that kinda feels like that’s not its intent.

A puzzle would define that rational thinking would allow you to clear it in one go.
Instead, it’s a jumping challenge. You don’t always have to find the right path because there’s only one path to go. In those cases, the difficulty lies in making picture perfect jumps. making picture perfect jumps can be challenging, but they’re not puzzles

I tend to refer to them as Jumping Procedurals instead of puzzles. Same great JP acronym, more accurate flavor.

They also now provide 2 gold for dailies when before the reward was minimal. And three spirit shards. And you only have to do three of them. Takes less than ten minutes most days.

Honestly people will complain about anything.

That’s a rather disappointing sentiment. And standing up for bad design choices is just tacky when blaming the players for seeking resolution. Repeatedly. Because this isn’t the first time it’s come up and suggestions have been made.

The fix isn’t even that hard, as it existed in he game prior to the zone event daily. It does promote bad/frustrating gameplay. Unless you’re a turret-engi who can get away with rifle and /sleep. And I guess no one really minds the constant “Any events?” questions always popping up. But I guess it’s appropriate for map chat and not as spammy as GW2 trade chat, so who cares?

The only time I actually like zone events popping up is when it targets HoT zones. They were built to be much more active, so it works within the natural flow while prodding players into content. Unless it’s Dragon Stand. Because then we get back to the “wait and taxi and pray it’s the One Sacred Map” that also ought to be fixed.

I seriously do not understand the appeal of adding fishing. I mean, whatever floats your boat and all that. But I’ve just personally found fishing in every other game to be dull and, because of that, avoided it after messing around a bit.

And if the fishing was going to mean anything, it’s also very grindy. Let’s be honest, fishing in MMOs is far from engaging. Drop bobber, wait 3-20 seconds, click for fish/failure.

If we got fishing like FFXV, maybe I’d care. :P

Dailies!

“Just missed” is probably less annoying than “permanently stalled” but obscuring all events in range. Some events are also simply too long winded like a 5 minute defense event.

Or if they bug out. That’s always fun. :\

Really though, hauling kitten to get to an event circle just to have it close because 80 people ate a tiny boss is just frustrating. I don’t do zone events and will pop into PvP before I even consider it.

This keeps popping up, so I hope the devs keep getting this as feedback.

Zone event completion isn’t a good daily. Period. It really needs to be Regional events, if they wish to insist on it. It will spread the player population out more and pare down the obnoxious “just missed it” of the current event hustle.

Housing:

Yes, please. Give me a space that’s mine, not a guild’s, not some social area where I apparently don’t even have a bed. Let my Scribe work be useful for something other than niche 90% HP boosts or someone else’s guild furniture. (I like my guild(s), but Scribe’s purpose is screwed up, yo.)

Fishing:

Dive in. Get fish. Finish underwater combat!

Players need to learn what "DPS" means

this is a recent trend that is born from people not being able to speak proper English or not being aware of established MMO jargon.

I happen to speak proper English and was reading at a college level way back in middle school. I will still use jargon and short-hand because that is what people in niche settings use to quickly communicate unique and specific concepts. This does not make a person dumber. Conversely, being able to assimilate multiple associations for new, unique, or similar concepts is a sign of intellect.

Also, I will, from now on, ask “how many MPHs does this car get” the next time I buy a car (in another ten years, because I just bought one and missed the opportunity to make car dealer look at me funny).

If people have really been asking about the structure of Charr reproductive organs, is there more to this truce with humanity than I’m aware of …?

I can only assume you’re new to the internet if that’s a question. (Hint, leave safe search on unless you’re prepared to see the cantunseeable.)

Players need to learn what "DPS" means

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The term DPS, damage per second, is used as a noun. It is also used as an adjective (DPS build; DPS gear). So, now people are using it as a verb? Sounds about right.

Internet game populations never meet a term they are unwilling to evolve/mutate to a new purpose.

It just gets more confusing when:

“verb” is a noun
But “to verb” something means turning a noun into a verb (ie, “dps the boss”)
And things that aren’t nouns can, via the verb “to noun”, become nouns.
English is very table-flippy that way.

While we’re thinking of things that need more sinks:

Airship Oil, Auric Dust, Leyline Sparks.

No eaters, just vendors that give stuff in exchange. I’m.. kinda done with gobbler items.

Booting players due to excessive inactivity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

I wished maps like Dragons Stand booted inactive players

Normally, I’d say it’s not such a big issue, but… and here’s the anecdote:

I found two players /dance spamming and otherwise not helping with the Mordremoth fight. Like, standing still and doing nothing. There’s no report option for that. Spamming isn’t even a clear-cut thing, so I doubt it’d see any action, and it’s not exactly LFG abuse, even though they had to squad in at some point. Either way, it’s not right for everyone else to bust their chops while others actively do nothing.

It’s such a corner case as to be shrug-worthy, but it’s still really irritating.

Sounds a lot of ‘non-raiders’ are actively fighting against going to the raid in any way. Bullheaded behaviour… just do the kitten escort. It’s really not harder than any dungeon. If you are not even willing to do that then live with it.

A sterling endorsement from the ‘raid community’. Come one, come all to experience the lack of joy and poor attitudes!

…Seriously, this doesn’t even affect raiders, so why kew about it?

Or, they could just remove the cap on how much the eater can consume… That’d give us all the sink we’d ever need…

+1 to this. I understand why the daily cap is there, but it doesn’t really jive with how players are playing.

And if this pattern keeps up, we’ll just have too many eaters along with too many materials, keys, etc. The inventory bloat will overtake the game (more than it already has).

We need to start having vendors as ways to ditch this stuff.

Kill Braham, Marjory off in story

in Living World

Rauderi.8706

Funny but I thought that the discord in the little group where Marjory was not willing to simply be told what to do as if she was a subordinate and Braham’s anger over what he saw as the disrespect for his mother’s (and Snaff’s) legacy was the first sign of any true “mature content” in the story line.

These are not soldiers in our own little army, they’re heroes and almost by definition a hero is someone who’s willing to stand up to and do what they think is right. When that’s at odds with what our character wants then a clash is inevitable and correct. Before now the characters were all just tagging along with us on our merry japes, now they have a little character of their own and their own goals. This will allow for a much more interesting story-line, IMO.

I suspect that they will return with a preview of the new elite specs before the next expansion but then I remember that norn who go to fight Jormag and fail tend to come back as icebrood so…

You think “I’m glad you didn’t join Destiny’s Edge. My Mother wouldn’t want you in there.” is mature? LOL

No, what people are complaining about is characters being immature or selfish.

I am not opposed to NPCs being immature or selfish…plenty of people are. My concern is not being allowed to avoid or ignore punch such people.

I like this as a material/trading post sink. Hopefully it also includes a sink for all the stuff we get by the bucket yet are account bound (ie, the specifically mentioned airship oil). It’d be nice if those access items could be returned in exchange for currencies (airship oil for parts) or keys (oil for crowbars), or just to give a small other reward for boosts or rares/exotics.

It would be a relatively low-pain way of addressing the inventory bloat. Especially if said eater also consumes junk runes/sigils~

They should just put the raid masteries into their own separate category, since that keeps non-raiders from being affected and gives them a place to put achievements for future raids that might be in other expansion areas or something.

That’d be a nice idea, but it’s not within their development framework as masteries exist currently. The raid tracks use HoT experience tracks and mastery points, and the achievements give HoT mastery points. There’s no crossover with core Tyria mastery points, and to attempt it would be an accounting nightmare. It’s pretty easy to assume the next expansion’s raid masteries will contribute to and consume from the mastery point pool.

I doubt they’ll want to change the system for it, so the easiest thing to do would be to keep the raid masteries unlocked.

Ah, the “non-raider xp” topic again. ^^

I’m stuck at 168 with the rest of the non-raid plebes, and, honestly, I just wish ANet would unlock the tracks. While I get the idea that the mastery track should have been unlocked by doing raiding, that’s just holding a lot of players back.

I’d be happy enough to be allowed to work on the raid tracks without diving into them.
