And there should be no speed boost because movement speed is/should be factored into class balance. Warriors should be slower than Thieves and Rangers, etc.

And yet, Warriors move faster than Thieves and Rangers.
Move speed as a “class balance” is actually pretty terrible, considering being a “slow” class isn’t fun. Mesmers and Guardians have it really rough.

Not a statement for mounts, necessarily, but balancing for speed is a WvW/PvP concept. Open world should be more equal on travel time.

Thats one sad mount.

Can we have a gem store item that looks like a dead horse, has no use and call it mount?

“Dead Mount” gem store item? Click on it to replace your skills like the other toy-mounts, but it just drags behind you and reduces your speed by 33%.

Top 5 things Anet got wrong

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

I don’t need a Top 5.

The Trait redesign. The best I can find about it is “It was a good idea, executed extremely poorly.” The feedback thread, with tons of suggestions, feels largely ignored by the devs.

Underwater combat. It was half-hearted at start, and instead of stepping up, they pulled back. Sadly, even the best underwater combat I’ve seen in an MMO is still… eh.

Lazy boss designs. It’s gotten better, but at start, they didn’t make good use of the “soft trinity” or one-man-armies design of characters.

WvW design. It’s lackluster and follows in the same vein as Dark Age of Camelot.

A reward system that doesn’t reward for time or skill invested.

Grind. Yes, all games do it, but in GW2’s case, it’s stuck in places that don’t need it.

Echoing Morte: “Defiance, immunity to reflects, etc. Bosses that ignore the rules and mechanics of the game, and invalidate many of the more interesting aspects of play.”

Top 5 things ANET got Right

Whenever I play another MMO, I get to thinking about the QoL things ANet did right:

I still sing the praises of the Trading Post.
Deposit Collectables. Enough said.
Unified character bank and collectable storage.
Crafting interface (which got even better!)
Wardrobe

Other games can’t catch GW2 on quality of life.

And there are some solid conceptual design decisions:
Fluid combat
Character aesthetic
Buy-to-play
Non-trinity with fast LFG
Permanent living story starting with season 2
(Of course, there’s a lot I can argue against in their decision making.)

The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

In some cases you’re forced either to do wvw or PVP because they pick very specific zones and bosses. Sometimes, if they’re a low level player with no level 80’s on their account, 1-2 of the PVE objectives will be overleveled for them. They might get something like daily Golem MKII and daily Malchor’s Leap Event Completion (which I believe actually happened yesterday or the day before?) … if they’re level 40… it’s not likely they can complete dailies through PVE then.

I’ve given my support for the basic idea of the system. Works well and balances the PvE/WvW/PvP populations. But the PvE side needs some tweaks.

I got stuck on Dredgehaunt Event completion last night. Roughly an hour of wandering, and I managed to find two events. I looked at the reward chest (a slap of karma and 2 drips of XP) and decided capturing a ruin in a borderland was just the better option. It’s nice to have the option, but these zone event completions need to be deleted from the rotation.

People are hording into maps to work on events that were not intended to handle 50 players at a time. Some events finish way too quickly because of it. Some areas have events that simply refuse to spawn at a reasonable rate. I like dynamic events, and it’s good to see the urge to participate, but finding them should not feel like a treasure hunt.
I’d like to go back to seeing area event completions (Kryta, Ascalon, etc), so the player base is spread out a little more and it’s possible to complete the daily in areas with more frequent events. It’s less dev work than what should be done: increasing dynamic event spawn rates.

Similarly, the Kill A Specific Boss daily needs to stop. The boss rotations are too infrequent. When I’m told to target a boss that spawns 1:30:00 from now, I don’t have the patience for that kitten. I’m not even going to be playing 1:30 from then, and the only reason I know the boss spawns at that time is from an external site. Bad ANet, bad. Do we even need dailies to encourage us to fight bosses? The ruddy things are on farm anyway.

Right now, half the PvE dailies feel like they’re about waiting to have fun, rather than actually going out and doing it.

Allowed us to choose from a large variety and didn’t make us wait hours on end for a specific event or run around a map like headless chicken looking for events that haven’t been designed for so many players.

Some days it does feel like this. Or to get double-screwed because two of the PvE dailies are Fractals, which I don’t typically have time/groups for. Seems like every third day or so, I’m shuffling off to WvW (which I don’t want to do) to finish my daily set.

I brought it up in another thread, having highly specific zone targets for a daily just draws everyone there, and it’s too obnoxious to find an event that isn’t completely overflowing with people that the event wasn’t designed to handle.

[Suggestions] Improving WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

As one of those people unattracted by WvW, I’d been pondering its waning popularity for a while. Though a lot of people focus on the rewards, and it’s definitely a valid point, there’s other things about WvW that give me no incentive to bother.

1. Population differences and activity
This became very evident while SoR was still top tier and Blackgate was dominating everything. So much of WvW success is rooted in having butts in the seats and zerging around the map. Worse, a dominating server has less competition, which just solidifies their position. While that might be “fair,” it’s not fun.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the neutral WvW environment isn’t nearly hostile enough. The various little tribes that can align with a side don’t do anything other than being a nuisance to traveling soloers/scouts. There would be more potential swing in having third-party (fourth-party?) invasions by neutral factions, or at least a way to hire/recruit them as mercenaries to spawn attack events. I’m not sure how, but WvW needs a way to shake things up and offer struggling servers a way to cash in for support.

2. Blobzerg and a lack of strategy
Maybe it’s different on higher-pop tiers, but there seems to be little for smaller teams and roamers to do. Perhaps there’s a meta-thought around having good commanders and such, but the general perception is Zerg vs Zerg.

For this, WvW could use more simultaneous objectives. The ruins were a decent start, but they’re too centralized and don’t seem to offer much benefit.

3. Movement
This is a kittene to sort out, but quite frankly, if you’re not playing a warhorn warrior, you’re doing it wrong. And there’s plenty to say that movement speed is part of the WvW balance, but I only nomially accept that as a design decision. The sheer boredom of moving through ally-owned territory does nothing to help bring potential WvW players in.

Some kind of movement bonus from ally-NPCs could do wonders for making the experience less of a slough. Perhaps something like bases and checkpoints having an NPC grant a swiftness similar to, but shorter in duration than, the buff in major cities. Other swiftness buffs wouldn’t stack in effect or duration with it, and it becomes a suitable reward for keeping territory while letting allies get through owned territory more easily.

I’m curious what the WvW community thinks would help WvW, and I thought I’d offer the above as a starting point.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Traits matter to some classes as you are leveling. I have felt this pain firsthand with a Mesmer (I want to do JPs with my wife on her mesmer).

I gave this system the benefit of the doubt and tried it out via leveling a Guardian with full traits..

I hated most of the process and vowed to not do it again.

However, as I said, I decided to roll a Mesmer. Playing this toon with no traits was much more painful than a Guardian. It was painful enough that I bought my trait tree.

People who say that we don’t “need” traits at lower levels are correct… technically. However, if you want to level alone, or have to level alone, you are going to feel the pain. For classes like this, while its true that you may not need traits during leveling, without them you are going to have a much more difficult and less enjoyable time.

Even with a buddy, the experience was painful. Most of the trait unlocks were above our level, and it made our play time very disjointed.

It must be pain when someone took your toys away but I can not imagine possessing all traits by level, let’s say 30 0_o it would be game destroying IMO. Sorry but honestly I do not get what all fuss is about but I have feeling that you all want “easy” time. Now everything must be “casual friendly”, “easy”, “buy it now”, “have all now” to me it’s fun when there is challenge, and you have to think how to get something/there/ et cetera.
I wish old times come back, where every game was hard

edit:
there is solution, make suggestion to create item in store “one click to 80

Not surprising, but you’re incorrect. On a lot of things. Including basic principles of game design. I know this topic is a lot of tl’dr, so you wouldn’t know, being new to the game, forums, and game design, but what many players are upset about is the deviation from the old system and the absurd amount of work/timing it takes to earn traits that are vital to builds.

The new system also directly goes against ANet’s stated goal of promoting experimentation with trait builds. The pre-April characters have that flexibility, but any character after that has a limited number of traits. Those kind of limitations are a slow death to an MMO.

Personally, I’ve been campaigning for more direct challenges, similar to skill points, so that players who want to take on those challenges for their traits can do so on their schedule. It’d be fun to have trait-dungeons that open up chunks of traits (Power I-VI, etc) that can scale for 1-5 people, so it’s not about camping a world boss and letting the zerg do the work.

I’d be fine with the dailies being regional instead of zone-specific. I don’t overly care if they’re in the same region.
Just give me a way to actually do the event chains. :\ I was in Fields of Ruin last night, and none of the usual events spawned. So instead, I went to WvW (which I don’t like), and ran (and ran and wished I had a mount) until I could finally catch up with a tower capture that was going on in a borderland.
So, to get my daily, I spent most of my time doing next to nothing. Not fun.

The most we’ll likely see is ANet taking heed of prior design flaws and making their new content better. I’d love for them to do a redesign on the existing dungeons (increase armor, lower HP, increase speed but lower damage), but they won’t.

So can we stop spawning these anti-zerk threads? Or at least merge them? :\

4. Make trait unlocks account-wide. If I’ve unlocked my entire domination line on my mesmer then my baby hunter should have his entire marksmanship line unlocked too. Granted, he won’t be able to spec into most of it until he’s acquired the trait points, but at least by level 80 he should have access to everything.

That would be a pleasant bonus, and a lot of people have asked for it, but it’s not the game-breaker that lots of others have quit (buying character slots, the game itself) over.

Perhaps someone more industrious than I can, again, recompile the ideas into a simple document. Or spur a CDI. Something. This needs to be addressed, loudly and publicly. (As if 70 pages wasn’t enough.)

+1 for thread support

  1. was an idea I posted earlier, though my topic may have been a tad snarky. I think it would work quite well.
I wouldn’t be upset if #2 were paired with it, but I don’t mind waypointing around the map to get them done. Doing 3 achievements instead of 5+ already saves me a ton of time.

Suggestion 1: Rotating the dailies among different people can cause it’s own problems though. Let’s say 2 people always do dailies together. With your proposed rotation one person could be sent off to kryta and the other to maguuma (for example). I can see this causing it’s own set of valid complaints.

Maybe the complaint is they don’t really want to play together? :P I dunno, I’m being sassy. Personally, I wouldn’t mind doing one set of dailies then helping my friend, or vice-versa.
Couldn’t be any worse than the trait system for making divisive play. Just sayin’. >_>

Snark aside, doing my part to see some of these ideas staying on the top page for the devs.

Lemme stop giving bad ideas. =P

I want to add something new. I want to add something constructive. But, it’s all be said. If we need a short-short list, I’ll put it here, again:

1. Don’t make us wait. Make trait challenges available like skill point challenges. Don’t hide them behind 100% maps or tee-hee-can-you-find-jumping-“puzzle” tasks.
2. Give us choice and agency. Specific unlocks behind specific, often level-gated tasks damages the intent of the system.
3. Don’t back-weight the progression. The nonsense of starting at 30 and waiting until 80 for grandmaster traits doesn’t help.

Honestly, just the first two would be kittening grand.

It would be neat to have a mini scavenger hunt for a daily, find and read some books (and learn some lore/history), or locate and converse with one or more individuals (one person directs you to the next sort of thing). I have enjoyed finding interesting conversations throughout the world and one memorable one was following a golem in Metrica what was delivering messages to folk – some of the conversations/messages were hilarious especially if you followed long enough. I think folk would enjoy a bit more variety than events here, jumping puzzle there, slay that there.

“Rawr, I’m a Charr, and I’m going to eat you!”
Heh.

That would be an interesting twist on a daily task. I’m not sure where it’d fit in the grand scheme of things, but done right, it could open up some of the lore to the players.

that’s one bright side on the revamp.. arena net isn’t forcing anyone to do certain content, but they can organize and incentivize doing so.. they’ll know where players are likely to be on some days, less traveled content will have a congregation of players testing things out, there’ll be better and more consistent feedback and or bug reports.. or scaling, event revamp suggestions.. also, the ’don’t give Everyone the same thing on the same day’ was briefly mentioned in the daily suggestion thread i promoted for like 2 months straight z_z but they were probably polishing their revamp by the time that feedback hit the forum z__z the new roll-out seems to be one they’d be able to tweak pretty easily..

as for scaling that is an issue all itself.. like the condition troubles, it’s an issue i myself don’t closely follow but i know other people have mentioned it quite a bit.. so if arena net is capable of improving those systems hopefully they’ll get around to it

obviously they aren’t stupid, they’re not going to bottleneck and crash content or make things horribly imbalanced.. i remember when they tweaked scarlet’s healthpool during ‘invasions’ .. personally, between wintersday and ‘new dailies’ i haven’t seen too many issues.. i’m sure there are some though

Glad I wasn’t the only one to notice.

This is a design choice that would help the game, but it’s not a specific complaint that’s going to generate 1000 views and 10 pages of text in 24 hours. But I can at least hope a dev or community manager will see it and hand it forward for a feature pack or something.

While it’d be nice to have many concurrent quest threads in all the other zones, they’re tied to renown heart progress and such. Not to say they couldn’t be redesigned, but it’s an added difficulty into making them more cohesive with the zone, as it is with Silverwastes.

As I think about it more, it might be easier to simply give different dailies per player. Keep the task and reward the same (logger, events), but let the locations be different.

So, Player.1234 gets:
Ascalon Miner
Lornar’s Pass Events
Kill Jungle Wurm
(While I have my argument with the kill-a-world-boss daily, if it differed based on time of log-in so that it happened within the hour, or changed to Defeat a World Boss, that would be fine.)

while Player.1111 gets:
Shiverpeaks Miner
Kessex Hills Events
Kill Jungle Wurm

That would spread out the zerg quite a bit by shuffling them into dozens of zones instead of a single zone.

New dailies, meet the zerg

I’ll start off by saying I don’t mind the new dailies. The new reward structure is actually kind of nifty. The lack of choice is off-putting, but the latest “oops, that’s an unintended problem” comes from the rather specifically-directed play the dailies encourage.

I’m not even against the directed play itself. (Forcing Silverwastes on me when I only have one character who can get there was butt, and so was Fractal 11-20, but.. eh. I got over it.) The problem comes from everyone doing the same objectives. Everyone.

It became an issue in Iron Marches last night, when 30-50 people started doing events that were not designed to hold that many people. Spawn rates were stupid-low and mobs evaporated the moment they were conceived in pixels. It felt just the same as being in the pre-event for Frozen Maw or Fire Elemental.

Conclusion: The interaction of directed play and zergs is not fun.

I’ve been rallying for smaller map populations for a while now, since many of the world bosses are on farm. Scaling on Teq and Triple might have to be adjusted a bit, but it’s the easiest solution.

Otherwise, it’s time to make a sweeping balance pass on all events so they scale properly for 2-200 people.

An Honest Discussion About Living World

in Living World

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Just some quick thoughts, here.

It’s a wise decision to space out the content in the way they’ve done Living Story. WoW learned their lesson with Burning Crusade. The heaviest users finished their content in under a few months, content that had taken years to produce. And Living Story releases aren’t too badly paced. While it’s active, its two-week release schedule means that the story content comes at a reasonable pace, while the bonus material stays available as a time-grinder. While I could agree that the actual primary content has a habit of being short, there’s at least a little replay value. (Or there would be if they would let us bypass the story parts for the challenges.)
Assessment: I’m fairly satisfied. I don’t have to rush to do the content as it happens, and I finish fast enough that the next week becomes a whatever-I-want game again.

I’m not happy with the story. The writing is, and I’ll be blunt, juvenile. I know writing for MMOs is hard, but that’s mostly because of a lack of permanence. BUT common mistakes in character and pacing are not something a dedicated writing team should be making. The whole script for this should have been planned a year ago, and it feels like it hasn’t.
The “biconics” are questionable in their behavior, sometimes sickeningly so with how disjointed they are. Character representation is so hideously one-sided: Scarlet, Canach, Faolin, Caithe, Trehearne… They’ve been a parade of terrible representatives to an otherwise interesting race, paired with lame, poorly-executed motivations. And Norn are still boring, as evidenced by Brahm taking a backseat as a babysitter to a more interesting Taimi.
Assessment: Get better writers who understand both characters and MMO semi-persistence.

Getting new zones is at least something to look forward to. While Dry Top can cave itself in with an earthquake, Silverwastes keeps my interest. I’ll be honest, Dry Top would have been much better if the overhead map made it clear how to get around and get to the event locations. It’s the biggest problem with having a “vertical” map. Silverwastes has a lot of little moving pieces that work much better for this. Sparse waypoints, skritt tunnels as a reward to help move around, plenty of events, and even a few underground puzzles that some players have enjoyed.
The rate of release doesn’t match other expansion-based models, but I cut ANet some slack for having less money than God, instead of more, like Blizzard. But it does create a standard. If WoW can release 6+ new zones in two years, along with new PvP maps, I could only give GW2 an A for effort if it released half that. Which, in two-ish years, we have Southsun, Dry Top, Silverwastes, and Edge of the Mists. Two flops, a win, and a WvW overflow map. But they can’t all be winners. (Isn’t that right, Krasarang Wilds?)
Assessment: A solid C+, but I’m eager to see where they’ll go with it and if it’ll mean new races/classes.

@Rauderi that seems to be a change they may have done due to player feedback.
Notice how in Silverwastes you can pay 12 tokens for a random extractor or 30 for a specific one.

Good times.

Now they just need to update fractal/Tequatl/etc rewards to match it.

Echo from another post:

I noticed something on the Wintersday vendor. He offers boxes with random rewards for 1 unit (I forget the actual currency), but he also has another box with a selectable reward from the same pool for 4 units.

This works fine for those who feel lucky and for those willing to put in more work for guaranteed rewards. We need more options like this.

(2) +20% Swiftness Duration
(3) +50 Healing Power
(4) When struck, gain Swiftness for 7 seconds (10 second cooldown)

I’ve purchased skill points, thereby adding to the metric that I actually want to buy skill points. I am ashamed.

Snark aside, I have a medium armor guy using the Whispers coat, because it’s one of the few decent options for medium. He’s a Blood Legion member of the Vigil, so maybe the Order of Whispers isn’t happy with him wearing their uniform.
Or maybe they are. Hm. Cranky Charr guy with a pet and lots of arrows making a huge fuss is a great way to divert attention from actual operatives. And if he should be captured, he can truthfully say he’s not a Whispers member. It’s brilliant~

I think about these things too much.

Why we can`t use DPS meter?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

You don’t seem to understand. The choice they make completely invalidates their skill as a player. Their choice makes them kittenoon as they make the choice they stop being ‘very good players’.

Choice invalidates skill?

Well that’s a first. So the people that can (and have) completed the dungeons naked are not skilled players. Gotcha. Because they made a choice to not use zerk gear to do it.

Edit: You know, that could be flipped on you just as easily. The choice to run zerk negates skill. You could look at from the perspective that you need to run a gimmick in order to be successful.

Shadowflame, dearheart, you enjoy this, don’t you? =P

There’s a fairly semantic fail in the argument, right?

“Zerk is best way for play”
No, it’s just fastest, with the condition of using a very specific and well-practiced strategy. “Best” carries too many qualifiers. It might be fast, but boring. It might be fast, but inflexible, assessed by demands to wipe after a failed boss strat downs half the party. It’s fiscally rewarding, but might not be emotionally rewarding. It’s grinding for some, not fun. If it is fun, well, rock on. Not gonna fault someone for getting jollies from earning cash.

“Zerk is for skill
No, skill is for skill. Forgive the tautology. Speed-runs are practice, which correlates to skill, but is not itself skill.
If we wanted “skill,” we’d be asking for procedurally generated dungeons with random mobs, bosses, and goals. (I really want this, by the way~) There’s no path to learn, no set walls to kite a boss behind, just preparation and reaction. That’s skill.

Which class would you prefer to someone...

I find the best all-purpose class to be Warrior. They come with a fair amount of support, do decent damage, and survive better than most classes (which is good for diving into unfamiliar content). They melee well and switch to range without much trouble.

Guardian could also work, especially on the melee/range divide. They get plenty of tools for all ranges.

But they don’t enjoy the time it took. That’s the problem. One of the biggest complaints AP hunters had was that it took forever to get all 10 AP for the assorted dailies. They felt pressured into doing it and they couldn’t “play how they wanted to.”

Now anet has changed that, and some of them still aren’t happy.

And they never will? /shrug

I could have used this change yesterday. I was short on time (because shammy-leveling elsewhere), so a quick in-and-out would’ve been happy.

What happens when a large percentage of the player base starts getting their precursors a year or so from now?

The market changes? Crafting goods become worth something? People have to trade the claws and scales they have for the blood they want?

Same thing, different numbers.

Farmers will farm, sell to the market for a very lucrative amount, prices will stabilize, and the absolute value of gold sinks will increase.

Not an economic apocalypse.

“I don’t want to have to do all the dailies to get max AP from them”

Anet: Ok, we’re going to make it a flat 10 AP. You need only do 3. And we’re going to start giving you related rewards for doing them, so if you do more than 3 you feel like it was worthwhile

“Omg no! This is a slap in the face”

They can’t win. For crying out loud.

I would guess the actual argument is “I enjoy my 1.5 hours of daily-hunting.”

To which ANet says “You’re spending too much time hunting dailies and not playing the game.”

So I see where the displeasure is coming from. I see it, but I don’t agree. This is, by far, the most equitable solution I’ve seen to the daily situation, since WvW and PvP get the same 10 AP for doing achievements in their realms. Kudos, I say.

Account bound precursors from this would crash the market and cause all of the other ingredients for legend arises to skyrocket.

Which means way more money for farming them~ I apologize for the snark, but I’ve always been more of a supplier than a buyer. =P

Really though, there’s a limit to what should be a daily reward. I’m squee enough when I get a key or Black Lion salvage kit. I’d rather see daily/weekly rewards for actual tasks.

Huh, there’s an idea. Weekly achievement quests that result in a loot box for account bound Exotic+ gear. Even if it’s not overly useful for a specific character, the salvage alone would be worth it.
