Large battles and music

I’m glad someone touched on this topic!

I’ve imported music from other games to enhance my battle experience. From early on, I felt that the base combat music is sort of muted or subdued for the action. It didn’t make me want to get into large battles. The imported music encourages me to pick fights.

trinity system

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

In a 5-person group in a trinity game, the goal of the entire party is also to maximize damage. The only reason 2 of the players are allowed to do less damage than the three others (or no damage) are that the game requires that in order for the party as a whole to reach their damage potential. Two players (have to/get to) play specialized roles. Gear is central to build.

In GW2, players sacrifice personal max damage all the time to bring traits and utilities that benefit the party both offensively and defensively. Maximizing party damage requires a complex dance involving offensive or defensive buffs, situational awareness and optimized timing and rotations (notice that’s maximizing damage, not doing enough to get a PuG through an easy path). All five players have the opportunity to play specialized builds. Gear is an adjunct to build.

The two systems are different. They present different opportunities for players to make a difference in party play. Neither system is superior,, well, except that in GW2 you can play tank, healer and DPS. You might have to tickle things a bit for the tank to hold aggro, but it can be done for the most part. And, hey, if a DPS gets aggro he actually has tools to prevent the sure death that would be waiting for him if he pulls boss aggro off the tank in a trinity game. In a hard trinity game, there is no option to try alternative party comps.

Sure, GW2 has some simple encounters, but trinity games have tank n’ spank.

Every word of this. Every. Word.

The game doesn’t stop a party from trying the trinity method, it just requires more forethought and build massaging. It’s also not the fastest way to get through the content, but if you’re doing it with friends and guildies and having fun, go for it.

#NoDPSQueues

I’m going to lead off with that. As such, I’m against hard roles for GW2. I get that some people need that crutch, but I find most of the real battles more interesting because of GW2’s active combat. It’s not the “sit still as much as possible and maximize DPS” I get in WoW.

And now, the character-assumption portion of the argument. If you want Trinity, you are:
A tank that wants to feel special and get dungeon queues in an instant.
A healer who can’t be bothered to DPS and wants to play whack a mole with a stroke limit.
A dps who can’t be bothered to do more than spam a rotation and not stand in the fire.

I say this because it’s not the GW2 system that has been the problem. It is the encounter design that hasn’t successfully worked with a legion of 5 shock troops or a 70-man zerg. It can, it just hasn’t.
I consider it a learning point for the developers, since this notion of self-managing players spreading out damage, control, and support is still new. And I’ve said it before, designing single, monolithic bosses doesn’t work as well with GW2.

Obligatory “oh look another can haz duelz thread” statement about duel threads.

But!

It’s still not an utterly terrible idea to have a contained zone/instance map to allow team/solo duels with an audience. Not quite spectator mode in PvP, but something more sporting. I’d be okay with it, since people looking to duel know where to go (..no, not that place :P), so it’s highly unlikely they’ll pester others outside of that zone to get their fix.

But.. what would it do to sPvP, I wonder? (Shorten the queues?)

Do you remember Thunderhead? Tall, storm powers? Nice man, good with kids.
November 15th of ’58! All was well, another day saved, when… his cape snagged on a missile fin!
Stratogale! April 23rd, ’57! Cape caught in a jet turbine!
Metaman, express elevator! Dynaguy, snagged on takeoff! Splashdown, sucked into a vortex!
No capes!

And this is where, in the Incredibles drinking game, everyone loses. ..or wins. =P

[Suggestion] Second Boss Rotation, please?

And I’m sure you can agree that the bosses should not all have a constant, I’m always spawned state.

Don’t be so sure~ But, definitely not a Baron Longshore degree of respawn, where the next is up before the carcass finishes despawning.

Constantly on? Nah. There’s no reason for that. Once per hour feels about right, in lieu of having play data. But there’s been plenty of people who weren’t happy with 2-, 3-, or 6-hour rotations. It’s a lack of choice at best, or worse, disenfranchising players.

What I’d consider optimal is minor bosses hourly, major bosses 90-120 minutes, and giving players an option of what they want/need to hit for their goals.

[Suggestion] Second Boss Rotation, please?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I know why the rotation exists. It’s also problematic, as described above.

Honestly, with Megaserver, it might not reduce the player zerg size at all. But all those bosses scale with the number of players, so it’s also very doubtful that there would ever be less than 20 or so. Considering I’ve done Mark II in about 2 minutes with 5 people, but 5 minutes with 50, I’ll just assume that max capacity is actually a hindrance.

I’d love to see a red post about what minimum number the bigger bosses like Shatterer and Jormag are tuned for. But, I doubt halving the 70+ zerg into fun-sized 30-40 groups would hurt their success rate. There’s enough accusations of the content being faceroll easy, anyway. Shatterer is utterly AFK. Claw has the stupid mega-fearpush BS and area damage that means you at least have to move to not get downed.

Where I’m less sure about this suggestion is for the big world bosses like Teq and Triple.

Still, it’s better for users to have a chance at success than no chance at all because a boss spawns outside their play time.

I’m actually rather fond of my consortium harvesting tool. The faster cast collection is nice, but what amuses me more is the golf swing. So, I’d kinda like to see recreational tools for mining and logging.

Or, a pogo stick with a drill-end for mining?

Or maybe after Mordy gets a visual reveal, we could get minion tools. Mini-mordy swings by, then drops off a sylvari slave to do your dirty work. :P

[Suggestion] Second Boss Rotation, please?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

There have been enough complaints about players not being able to fight certain bosses based on when those bosses show up in the rotation. With the new daily structure, we can add players logging on, checking the GW2 Temple or Dulfy boss timers (http://dulfy.net/2014/04/23/event-timer/), then logging off for 1.5-2 hours to wait out a boss for the daily.

The suggestion (begging, even) is simple and would alleviate a majority of the issue:

Add a second boss rotation.

Sync them for the same times, but offer a second option. For example, when Svanir is up, so it Wurm. It bears discussion as to whether doing this for Teq or Triple is worth doing the same. For normal bosses, we might see more reasonable map populations, instead of 70 people skill-spamming defense events or making a joke out of the boss. For Teq/Triple, guilds might be able to organize better by not having every add-on getting sucked into one event, but instead split between them.

If the rotation was done to limit boss loot, it’s failed. The boss rotation is on farm, and it’s still littered with problems. While the boss events on timers is helpful for players, a single rotation is not suitable for how players gather up.

Guild Wars 2 is an actual lifestyle.

There’s a fundamental difference between someone that might have a hard time dealing with regular life, and someone that simply chooses it as a lifestyle. I don’t mean to diminish the OP in anyway and it’s a great inspirational story, but I feel like a lot of people don’t have legitimate problems to escape from. They choose to escape mundane problems and that’s not healthy.
But hey, maybe I’m just a hater : /

Some people go through situations that are impossible to understand until lived through. I can’t imagine being in chronic pain, partially because I turn into a blubbering, life-hating wuss if I’m so much as sick for too long. >_>
So if someone wants to use (saying “need” labels as addiction and isn’t quite the case) a game for their distraction until they feel well enough to engage elsewhere, I can’t fault that. And seeing so many others come out and highlight how things are a little easier for them in the meantime, that speaks volumes.

Condition Damage in PvE Overview

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Problem is the condition dmg in PvE is not implemented with more then 3-5 ppl in mind and we see zergs of 100 ppl hitting on bosses. Condition damage could and should be better only the implementation as is is just…… mèèèeeeh….

generally DOT build should outperform DPS build after 10-15 seconds in raw damage. this cannot be achieved: showing DOT is much to weak in the first place in GW2.

generally DOT builds are an important factor in game mechanics. I’d be able to do a 40 second bleed on mai- trin before a wipe, we could respawn and reenter the boss room and continue….

Fully agree that conditions need a huge overhaul. Out of some of the theory-crafting from other players, they also seem to think the actual output is lower than Pow/Crit stacking. Could be that Condition Damage needs to be tuned up, and most importantly, condition stacks being handled in a way that doesn’t penalize multiple condition-build users.

The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Which has nothing to do with dailies or dynamic events in other zones. The reason the Zone Events daily is such a kitten bother is because of poor scaling for events that were never intended to handle 50 people in one spot.
Not to malign Dry Top or Silverwastes for event schema. I actually kind of like Silverwastes because there’s always something to do. …unlike most of the other launch zones. Wandering and waiting 15 minutes in a zone I didn’t want to be in, praying for an event thread, and then still having to mob-camp so the zerg wouldn’t kill all my things is not a fun experience.

Oh I see, you mean just the small events (my point still stands for large events!) I only do those if it is Metrica (FE chain,) Wayfarer (Maw Chain,) Sparkfly (TEQ) – although if you are not in a rush find an escort chain in the daily zone and just do it 4 times (did this in Brisbane worked out fine – took maybe 20-25 min? idk I talked to friends and gathered while waiting) Or do what I normally do and do a fast WvW quest (or 2) in lieu of the 4 events – land claimer, guard killer, big spender, and even tower capture are all < 10 min max in EoTM at the start time.

On scaling – the issue is how to scale – an event scaling to 20 level 80 characters fully geared out downscaled to the zone level is worlds different than 20 of the zone level characters with greens and blues (and empty slots even.) An event HAS to be balanced for the latter, so there is nothing that could be done for the former to not be considered “a zerg” unless they get some super fancy dynamic scaling tech rolling.

Ah, sorry if there was misunderstanding in there. I promised to use my snark for good instead of evil.

I’ll be honest, it’s not a matter of how to scale the events. Toss in enough veterans and elites for whatever level is happening, and people can at least tag a mob before it melts. The problem is that the actual code work doesn’t seem to have happened for the events that get zergrolled by the new zone daily task.
We see this improvement, a little, with Fire Elemental. Occasionally, veterans or treasureless champs show up during the final clean-up period. (Which should be shorted and have many, many more spawns… c’mon, Anet..) Unfortunately, that seems a prohibitive amount of work to check and re-check each event for large group viability.
It’d be easier and less rigid to change Zone Event to Region Event and let the players spread out. If they want to draw people to zones, change Region Vista and Gather to Zone Vista and Gather, and it solves two problems in one swoop.

We can have both. Why does it always have to be one or the other? We’ve gotten both lately. In fact two new sets of armor were put in the game for us to earn IN game.

Also, people don’t ONLY want armor skins. I LOVE outfits. I never have to use Transmutation Charges. I can dye them all and I can wear them while I am leveling new characters, etc etc. Its great.

Both are wonderful for their own reasons.

This.

I still have my eyeball on a few BL armor sets, waiting for the right character inspiration for them. I’ll admit to shamelessly snapping up outfits that look decent because of their on-again/off-again flexibility.

Judging by the world events I’ve seen, yes, keeping up damage is an issue. But if your only response is “wah, get better so I can lootz,” you’re not helping the situation. Rather, it’s the fast waypoint to nowhere.

If you want it to improve, educate. And don’t be a kittenhead about it.

  • “Remember, this boss is an ‘object’ and can’t be crit, so please switch gear if you have it.”
  • “This boss has mechanic X, so you need to do Y to get around it.”
  • “Tag’s up, who’s with me?”
  • “Heavy support characters, we need skills X, Y, and Z to keep people upright and boos tdamage.”

…Every boss. Every map. If you care at all. Otherwise, it’s more sweet, sweet, qq-tears for those who are ignoring you.

Oh my God is THIS WHY HALF THE TIME NO ONE RESPONDS BEFORE THE MATCH?!

It is the WORST feeling when you’re trying to strategize with people and only 2 or 3 are responding and 2 or 3 completely ignore you and do their own thing. It makes me rage harder than anything else in this game. ANET, please force people to leave Team Chat on for the match duration, if only in ranked queue.

There’s a reason why all the big game that get streamed to millions are PvP, because it’s where the dedicated are.

…(a side note, done snowdrift events daily today. Took me an hour to tag 4 events. Most events melted before i could even get close to them, or had so few mobs that tagging was a lottery. This overzerging of everything, when you add broken events on top of that, makes the whole experience truly sickening.)

I honestly think Anet Devs etc only play WvW. If they had played PvE they would realise how bad this zerg problem is, that has gotten a lot worse since megaservers were brought in.

They don’t seem to want to lower the soft cap on maps, (or it seems, scale the mobs) and then they introduce this, which shows off how bad this problem is to its worse degree.

As I’ve mentioned before. this zerg, this ‘too many people at each event’ (whether it be on a daily map or anywhere else in the PvE game) changes the game, it takes all skill out of the game, because there’s no reason or need to do anything other than ‘press 1’. No need to heal, buff or dodge.

Maybe that’s what Anet wants, maybe it’s part of NPE to simplify the game.

Scaling and map caps has nothing to do with it – it is the design of the encounters. For example, capping Wayfarer Foothills at 12-15 players is going to do nothing but frustrate people…it would just make The Frozen Maw (a simple fight, rightfully so as it is in a starting zone) take 5x longer than it needs to take.

While triple worm doesn’t work well imo, (the revamped) Tequatl Event and Vinewrath (or even Breach) exemplify good encounter design within the GW2 framework. They require all participants to work together towards common goals (often times in smaller groups in whole or in part) and can NOT be zerged. Maps can and will fail if there is zero organization or too many afk players (or even too many players who do not understand the mechanics.) I really hope Anet uses these encounters (and the whole of Silverwastes in particular…didn’t care for the Dry Top design) as a base framework for map design in the upcoming expansion and beyond.

Which has nothing to do with dailies or dynamic events in other zones. The reason the Zone Events daily is such a kitten bother is because of poor scaling for events that were never intended to handle 50 people in one spot.

Had another “funnel the entire level 80 player base into one low level zone” daily last night.

Sigh.

So, again, I logged in, intending to play with my warband, but got burned out from how much of a chore it was to look through the zone and find no events, until a chain started and I got lucky. Finished daily, logged out in frustration.

I like the system, on the surface. Devil’s in the details, and the details suck. What I’d like to see instead:

  • Zone events becomes regional events. (A compromise easily echoed here on the thread.)
  • Zone [specific gather], instead of regional. If you want folks to visit less populated zones, that’s your incentive. It also hedges out using home instances as a quick gather.
  • Zone vista. Again, this gets people into specific zones. It also hedges out using capital cities to get vistas.
  • Daily Recycler. I know what you’re thinking: “Why bring that back?” Answer: Parity. There are daily logger, miner, and harvester achievements, which give comparable rewards. There is nothing that gives leather/cloth in a similar fashion. It could even be more specific as Trophy Salvager or Armor Recycler, if it needed to stay specific.
  • Do not, DO NOT, combine Daily Fractal and Level X Fractal. Put them on the same list for one slot.

Totally agree, though. I don’t mind the login rewards being on the panel, just move it to the bottom.

Guild Wars 2 is an actual lifestyle.

Only problem I have with any of it are those that live on these games and declare people like me lazy/entitled/‘wants everything on a silver platter’ when we express dismay over things we find to be inordinately time-consuming or elsewise demanding of degrees of commitment folks like me cannot afford to give to game-things.

Personally, I think its a wonderful way for people that would elsewise be shut-ins or isolated for just whatever reasons to be connected in some way to people and activities they would never otherwise get to be.

My situation is simple: I work a lot and am adamant in my prioritizations of making sure I spend the time with my friends and family that works best for us before spending time on things like my games.

If nobody’s trying to tell me to ‘stop being a scrub’ or ‘get a guild’ or other comparatively asinine dismissals when I say things like ‘Nobody with anything to do in their lives except live on the game and farm for XXXX will ever be able to get XXXX, and I think that’s dumb.‘, I’m not very much inclined to criticize what others do with their time either.

And for people like you, OP, I’m sincerely glad we live in a time when things like this exist for people in your position. It might not be the life you likely would’ve hoped for yourself, but I’m glad that things like this can provide something better and more than isolation, loneliness and nothing to look forward to for those that might very well need it.

This, all the way. Frequently, when people who invest so much time into the game address (sigh) “casuals,” they do so in a demeaning way. As someone with a job and another MMO to focus on, GW2 has to do a lot to compete for my attention. I’ll be honest when I say I don’t overly mind some of the “grindy” tasks (ascended gear, yer gettin’ the stink-eye, you too, Maudry), but I poke at them when I can. I’d rather not have some otherwise-unproductive SOB tell other players they need to “l2p” or gold-grind for things that shouldn’t be so obnoxious to get.

Enough of that ramble though.

OP, I’m glad that GW2 brings you enjoyment that’s worthy of your time. And thank you for bringing some light and civility to the game and forums. Wish you the best.

[Suggestion] Account wide skillpoint pool

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Pooling skill points? Not such a grand idea.
But, I’d recommended something similar in other threads, where characters can convert skill points to account items, at a loss, to give their extras to other characters. Not sure what the return rate should be. 3:1? 5:1? …10:1? And probably make them only as a bundle, so 25:5 (partially to avoid all the godsbedarned clicking…).

The new achievement panel is horrible

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Problems:

1. It looks out of place.
2. It is out of place, having nothing to do with achievement points.
2a. This also means that if someone wants to see it, but doesn’t know where it is, there’s no intuitive reason to look for it there.
3. Its placement there reduces the function of the Summary tab as a place to quickly see a summary of information.

While it is not a big problem (nor, indeed, has anyone in this thread suggested it is), it’s still quite a shoddy implementation.

It wouldn’t even bother me if the UI design just put the login reward notice on the bottom of the screen tab. That’s it, problem solved. :\

[Suggestion] weaker heals

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

The thing is, the arguments in this thread are just going to go around and around, being constantly repeated until it’s either 50 pages long, forgotten, or closed. The same thing happens to every other of the dozens of threads that are made about anything concerning the ‘meta’.

Silly thing is, while the OP points out the zerk-meta (hamstringing the argument immediately), there really is an issue with Healing Power as a pitiful stat. But the moment someone compares it to Berserker, all the proponents and opponents come out.

It’s especially baffling, since the pro-zerk thoughts in this thread are “it wouldn’t effect me because of active defenses and utility selection.” Great, so that means the healing coefficients and base heals can change. But… then there’s the WvW/PvP question, since everything is balanced around PvP.

[Suggestion] weaker heals

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

There’s a bit of disconnect in comparing Berserker stats to Healing Power.

Berserker highly synergizes with all three components of damage because of its multiplicative nature. To oversimplify: Power x Crit Rate x Crit Damage.

Toughness, Vitality, and Healing Power do not. The only factor there that is close to multiplicative is Toughness, because it reduces damage by dividing it, thereby giving a character more bang-for-buck in Vitality and Healing Power. But, Healing Power does not multiply with Vitality; all it does is supplement it additively.

Worse still, the coefficients on Healing Power skills are terribly low, meaning you don’t get much back for it. Just by that notion, I wouldn’t mind seeing definite healing numbers drop so that Healing Power coefficients rise to scale healing better. Only to give it meaning, not to spite anyone else’s gear. (Geez.)

Toughness and aggro

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Some of the mechanics are varied depending on instance and mob.

Riflemen in CM for example will generally priority target the most fragile target regardless of distance etc etc. (Last time I was there, I was in full zerker with everyone else in WvW toughness setups, no one got shot once while I went into downstate a couple times when we yoloed the hallways with no strategy).

Mossman regardless of stats has the tendency to just stick to a single target with small peels here and there (also for some reason his AI tends to break quite often if immobilize spamming before he goes into stealth as I’ve witnessed).

You’re right. I just didn’t feel like posting the entire text from the wiki.

I was mostly using it to elaborate in a more general sense, and in looking at it, proximity and damage mean more than ‘tankiness’. And really, that first hit is like some weird psycho-trigger on a basic mob.

If you haven’t noticed, they’ve put the 28 log-in rewards inside of it, above the recent completed, and then moved the zenith skins and the mf to the bottom.

Guys, just give the log-in rewards a new section, but don’t force them inside this one, making us need to scroll all the time to see what was basic information before…

I just..

I’m curious how much of an “epic quest” it’s going to take for a precursor. Just knowing the option’s there is encouraging. And maybe they’ll be a legendary worth having! The rest I’ve seen so far are obnoxious pieces of cupcake, so I’ll cross my fingers about a new hammer.

I’ll echo some others’ concerns about some potentially RNG BS as a part of the collections, as I take note of the current collections.

Toughness and aggro

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Some info from the wiki on threat priority:

  1. closest target to them
  2. who is dealing damage
  3. top damage dealers
  4. who is using a shield / has more toughness and overall armor

Often times, the one who does the first hit gets a majority of the aggro, so keep that in mind in group play. You may want to sort out ahead of time who’s going to lead in, and use Ctrl-click to set a target so your allies know what to hit first.

Game Updates: Traits

I always thought Skill Points could be a way of doing the Trait system, each zone could have 1 Skill Point spot thats an event/challenge more so than a fight, or a fast talk.

You mean like the current blue skill points on the map, with similar tasks, but granting a trait instead of a skillpoint?

That’s actually a pretty cool idea.

I’ve been recommending something like this for a while now.

But now, red post has me curious. Curious mostly about when this debacle is going to finally end, so I can make another alt.

Manifesto: Make Boss spawns truly RANDOM

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The random-boss ship sailed away long ago after:

Ascended crafting required defeating them. Random world boss spawns was a garbage idea for generating dragonite ore.

Megaserver. All the shards have to be sync’d for it to make sense, now. So… yeah, bosses can stay more or less as they are. What needs to happen is more concurrent boss spawns, so that players have a choice of where to go and the zerg can get split a bit more.

The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

The overlying system is fine, but the tasks need to change.

Definitely the bottom line of it. But it seems we are not being listened to. We have high level long time players telling us to shut up while new players are feeling intimidated and leaving for other games. Sadly most of my guild has went back to WoW since the changes. The only thing that might bring them back is the expansion, if they buy it.

All that is needed to fix the current daily system is understanding for low levels and more options, even if there needs to be a separate daily just for the under 22 level players who haven’t learned their way around yet and don’t have all their weapon skills unlocked yet.

What we are asking for is NOT ridiculous. Consider the new users who do NOT know how to get to pvp or WvW because it is locked for them unless they make their way to Lion’s Arch (which you don’t get to without leveling past 10 anyway).

If Anet wants to really understand our point of view, make a brand new character on a new account (Anet can do anything in the name of testing right?) and see how if it is your first character, everything is locked. If you already have one character who unlocked things, then things are unlocked (some) for the new toon (such as if you did WvW, your new toon will see it up there even if they are only level 3).

Gah, I can’t even imagine how punishing this system is for a new player. I’ve got access to everything, and it’s still terrible to the point of me spending half my days abandoning the game to go do doofy achievement things in WoW.

The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Double fractal BS again last night.
And WvW was a clusterkitten. I got real lucky finding a tower rush on another server’s borderland, since SoR has taken every plot of land on its own BL map. Then a random dolyak kill, though I killed 5v2. (Thanks to whoever actually slapped that yak. :P)

WvW isn’t fun, by the way. Unless there’s active commanders pointing things out, it’s a lot of boring wandering. EotM wasn’t any better, since my assigned group was getting spanked and couldn’t zerg. #notfun

So, instead of doing interesting things, I chased bad dailies, finished, and logged out. The overlying system is fine, but the tasks need to change.
