Back on topic, please. This isn’t about player choices and goals that were set improperly. For that, I’m sure there was plenty of discussion in PvP about Dragon Rank. Point being, the numbers guys can and do mess up every so often. Trying to slander the player base as whining or ignorant merely on the basis of desire doesn’t move the discussion forward.

Phys was on the right track a few pages ago, and we’ve seen some good ideas come out of it, especially in looking in how insignia are handled.

If we could continue to look for compromises that better fit actual game play without breaking the economy, that’d be great.

Best solution at present is to have a path-selling guild. Bring 4 guildies and charge one PUG for the trip. This guarantees you won’t get kicked.

I think maybe some people just have a lower threshold for how “beasty” they want their character to be. (Like ArcheAge, where I find their beast races to be weee too close to Uncanny Valley for me, because they’re too fur-on-human-body. >_>)

Making Healing Power Matter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Nope, not an anti-zerk thread, sorry.

But, I am somewhat concerned over the lackluster influence Healing Power has as an attribute. As most of the number-crunchers are aware, peak damage is based on a multiplicative relationship between Power, Ferocity, and Precision.

Peak damage, while a three-stat combination, isn’t quite the same. A high Vitality gives a reasonably large pool of HP, and Toughness reduces direct damage taken proportionally. Healing Power restores HP back to the pool, where Toughness again reduces damage proportionally. So instead of an equivalent to:
Power x Ferocity x Precision
we get:
Toughness x (Vitality + Healing Power).
Except with Healing Power, no skill I’ve seen uses Healing Power above a ratio of .125 (though please correct if I need updating). So what we really get is:
Toughness x (Vitality + (Healing Power x C)), given 0 < C < 1 as the skill’s coeffient.

So, that C really bothers me. I’d like to see Healing Power actually matter in that regard, which might mean re-tooling base healing values, examining endgame stats, and adjusting coefficients. No small task.

And I’ll admit that I usually sneer a bit at Vitality gear as well. Only 10HP per point? Not when I see base HP pools in the 20k range. Scoff, scoff. (Then I look at my Thief’s 11k and cry a little for it.) It makes me wish that Healing Power and Vitality were at least minorly multiplicative in the way Ferocity and Precision are.

But, something else occurred to me that might encourage more build play.

What if Healing Power affected both incoming and outgoing heals?

In most cases, like with the class healing skills, the ingoing and outgoing heal would be the same. Where the difference sits is on the support-oriented character that can spread a higher Healing Power out to allies via direct healing or Regeneration.

Of course, I haven’t considered all the implications. Depending on how healing skill ratios form out, I’m not sure how it would affect PvP, bunker builds, or WvW, which is why I’m offering it to the forums (possibly against my better judgment :P).

As a sort of post-script, I’m curious if it might be possible to have Boon Duration function similarly, where a support-stat’d character imparts gets more from his allies, even if they are not similarly built for it. Or perhaps it takes the greater of the two.

OP grinding mobs is not the way to go. No wonder you were bored senseless. GW2 is not that game, mob killing is not the ideal means of leveling.

Yeah, I had one of my friends gripe about that too. Then I compared how much XP I got from that game and GW2. Proportionally, GW2 is actually much more generous with XP per kill ratios. And if you go to places that people don’t farm frequently, it’s a huge XP bonus because of the extra XP a monster earns by sitting around too long.

I dunno, it’s weird, it’s like the devs designed it so that people should be encouraged to roam and explore.

WouldGW2 be more successful with HolyTrinity?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

NO.

Balancing healing for PvP would throw everything off.

And the last thing anyone in GW2 needs is to wait for a tank or healer to show up. Class design would have to have supported every class having multiple roles, at least 2 of the 3. But, there would be a meta on tanks and heals about which one “sucks,” and that class would fall through. Kind of how Necromancers aren’t very wanted in large group content because of condition limitations.

Trinity combat designs are also fairly boring, since all the action is directed around the tank. DPS just stand around and avoid the death spots. …woo. And gods forbid if your healer isn’t allowed to sit still long enough to get those heals out. I’d really rather not have my play experience dictated by whether one or two people are exceptional at their roles.

A specific item (the “micro” in an economic sense) was adjusted (“managed”) a few times to raise its market value. I don’t even call this a bad thing, so long as it’s not done too often. Silk has become a pretty decent market because of the changes, but those changes have presented other challenges.

Arguing semantics doesn’t produce solutions. It’s a waste of time.

The New Dailies -- Feedback welcome

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

At the end of the day, the daily changes have changed how I play most days. I used to get on, run around for up to an hour, doing events, leveling a character, gathering stuff, and in the process getting my dailies done. Now, I jump into WvW for just long enough to cap a ruin, kill a gaurd, cap 2 camps or kill a dolyak. If I don’t get all 3 tasks done there, I can usually get 2, then I hit four nodes in the featured region, then log off. Yesterday, I played for a grand total of ten minutes.

New dailies have certainly thrust me back into WvW after a long absence. However, the major design issues that fueled my departure from WvW back in 2012 still exist, and lengthy play sessions there are rarely fun as a result. It feels to me as if the new dailies, with the revised design intent of “enticing players into content they’ve been ignoring” did nothing to remedy the issues that caused people to not want to engage with that content in the first place.

This, right here. The previous system had some gently guided play, but overall, I could pick a character to level or a goal to chase, and get those dailies along with what I was doing. Now.. not so much. Sure, I’m getting some nice chest rewards for the effort (unless it’s zone events…) and twice the AP I used to, but it isn’t fun because my PvE experience is so restricted.

People don’t understand sometimes that even though posts might seem negative when we come here to voice our concerns for the direction the game is taking in certain areas that it’s not because we hate the game or hate the people making it, it’s actually quite the opposite really we care enough about the game to put together our threads to let the developers know this is what they need to work on the game to make it so that those decisions that didn’t quite make the cut will be remedied in the future.

Too right. I’m hoping, wishing for HoT to be a huge, awesome success. I want to be able to go to my friends in a stupor and say “Duuuuude. Dudedudedude, you gotta come play Guild Wars 2 now.”

Are you paying peoples way in so you can steer them away afterword?

The game’s doing that well enough on its own.
[/snark]

Sass aside, there’s a lot I love about GW2: freeflowing combat, beautiful scenery, and a wealth of conveniences unmatched in any other MMO. I pimp the kitten out of that to anyone who’d listen.

But that’s about it. Living Story season 2 isn’t satisfying enough to tout to experienced gamers and roleplayers.
The trait debacle is terrible. New Player Experience is.. eh. I’m not nearly as upset about that as some people seem to be, but pushing back character-defining traits makes the whole thing stale for many levels.
The atypical endgame is a turnoff for some, though I’m fine with it. But those who want a solid big-group/raid-dungeon experience would be disappointed. It’s one of the few times where I simply say “if that’s what you want, GW2 isn’t for you.”

I, too, am embarrassed enough about bringing more new players to the game. The traits are, by far, the most abysmal part of the current play experience, though the NPE doesn’t help with its relatively insulting approach that still does not clarify enough about the game.

I’ve had to steer other people away as well, which is sad, because I bought the way in for two of my friends so they could try the game.

Embarrassed? Seriously? Is it really That bad? You’ve steered people away, yet here you are at the forums offering your two cents? It’s just a kittening game. If you’re a new player, playing without traits really shouldn’t make any difference at all. For vets making alts, yes, lack of traits is pretty annoying, but for a new player the NPE puts you through your paces and prepares you instead of being bludgeoned with all sorts of different abilities and strategically mashing the keyboard once you reach more difficult content. If you Told new players it would suck because they don’t have access to traits right away, then they’ll believe it sucks. As was mentioned by someone earlier, mmo’s are about community. Help people understand and make some friends while you’re out there slaughtering foes. Sounds like a lot more fun than sitting around bitterly “steering people away” from the game. Get over yourself.

Um, wow, thanks for over-reacting, Captain Tirade. You seemed to casually not-read the part where I paid the cost of entry for my friends. They did not enjoy the experience, sadly. So, yeah, get over yourself.

I, personally, still want to love GW2. I have a great guild, and one of my RL friends still plays daily, as I do. Because I care about the game, I overlook the deep flaws, but I will not subject other people to them, especially when I know they won’t enjoy it.

Yeah, I was really put off by the Fractal Double Feature again. I almost didn’t do my daily. Almost.

My friend was on, so we hit a borderland for Ruin and Dolyak. The hard part was finding a dolyak to murder on a borderland my server was pwning. =P
We got run over by a mini-zerg (5v2, and we still almost killed a few), which wasn’t fun, but I laughed it off, found a camp with dolyaks on it, slapped them around, and got daily credit. I even remembered to use those cute little WXP consumables I keep getting from the NPE.

Worst elite skill: Asura race [Power Suit]

Long cooldown, has no purpose, and the in-game description is “lel this is a joke skill”.

Most of the elite transformations are pretty garbage, though. They could have amazekitten skills and still be garbage, because they don’t flow with GW2’s combat style. A fair number of the attacks require you to sit still or won’t move with you as you track a target.

Worst; All Thief Traps. They all need redesigned and their method of adding a rune set to buff them was unnecessary~ just turn those into traits so Thieves can actually be trappers without relying on runes. Even if you do use Trapper runes it’s an absolutely horrendous choice in PvE since enemies have to run over the tiny spot it places and doesn’t work well as aoe.

Gah, Thief traps. :\ I don’t even know why they say they hit multiple targets. They’re gone in one tick.
Ranger traps. <3 Decent cooldown time and condition, and they pulse for a few seconds.

Can’t say I’m fond of Thief poisons, either. Longish cooldowns, the effects aren’t overly useful, and autoattack can just eat the charges on one target. I think a redesign so that they’re more like Mantra charges could make them more strategic.

No one. That is how patches and balancing works.

It’s the price of early adoption. The extra scraps were the cost of more time spent snuggling your Ascended armor.

Because ANet cannot, and should not be changing recipes willy-nilly just because a handful of people take issue with it.

But the recipes were already changed once. I won’t accuse of ‘willy-nilly’, since silk had no value, but it’s happened twice in easy memory (the other with soft wood planks). That kind of material control doesn’t feel right. It might work, but it dings player trust and leaves them wondering what will be the next material to get the treatment and spurs hoarding and speculation.

Worse, definitely far worse. Places like Silverwastes was a good step, and balance, in the direction of price management. Unfortunately, it’s an issue when such methods also bring in an influx of other items. That can cause a price drop across the board, leaving earnings and expenditures basically the same as they were before, or worse.

Foxfire says hello, along with all those vendored elder wood logs. Though, funny enough, if part of the Maudry chain had just been Enchanted Mulch (quest item + 100 elder wood planks + etc) instead of plant food, the price hit may have been mitigated somewhat.

First off, ground turkey is amazing. Ground turkey makes you strong.
Secondly, a wild rant != good feedback in any situation.

Let me ask a question, if you could farm silk specifically, but slowly, so the price remained what it currently is or higher, would that be better or worse?

I’d call that a win.

Part of the rancor about silk is the indirect, semi-RNG nature of it. While it’s possible to ‘farm’ for it by waiting on drops, there isn’t yet a way to roam from map to map and grab it reliably. We’ve cracked jokes in another thread about looting laundry lines for cloth drops, but I don’t consider it a terrible idea.

yes clothcraft has always been a fairly bad proposition due to it being used for all armor recipes. then ascended takes the same bad formula and makes it worse by doubling the amount required.

Triple, actually. 2→3 scraps and 50→100 for one ascended grade material.
Triple. On top of being used for every armor class.
Which really makes me wonder if there could be an accurate model the scenario of returning silk to equate with the other recipes.

I’m with Matt Visual: let’s just call them Dragons. Little ones, to be sure. (Heck, if folks can consistently refer to an Elder Dragon’s mere Lieutenant by its boss’ name , I don’t see any trouble with calling Wyverns by a completely different name.)

A wyvern isn’t a dragon. In fact in most folklore a wyvern has more in common with a basilisk or a mix between a bird and a serpent.

Claw of Jormag is Claw of Jormag, not Jormag himself. Most people I know refer to him as Claw for short, not as Jormag for short. But people who don’t know much about the lore might make the mistake and call him Jormag, just like people who don’t know much about European folklore might make the mistake to think a wyvern is a dragon and/or call it a “wih-vern” instead of how it should be pronounced: “why-vern”.

I call it Jormag (with a Y) all the time. =P
Because if I say “claw”, half of the Charr community will turn around, thinking I called their name.

you only think that because we have lots of cows to kill

Turkey is far too lean to be ground, hence the heresy!

Ground? How dare you!

That’s a fair point, but I think maybe you’re really protecting your interests in the ground meat market by making spuriously unrelated claims. I’m watching you.

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I might have to be a bit terse here. When the question is “What problem is this supposed to fix?” and the answer is “silk prices are too high and damask production does not parallel other, more easily obtained materials,” I’m not sure if it can be made any clearer.

It’s not like we don’t understand the economic concerns, though we may lack the actual data available. I’m not even bitter about the actual price of silk, but rather the slap in the face that is the production requirements, which just so happens to elevate the silk prices.

Would it be better to raise leather and mithril similarly? It’d be fair at least, and it would bring up leather prices. It’d also be a sour thing to do to the players, who are already ill from all the farming it takes.

I don’t really have a solution that hasn’t already been mentioned previously, and I want to have a stable market, so it’s worth having a dialogue. Do prices need to come down? Not exactly.
“Working as intended” and “there is not a problem” have some merit as a part of the conversation. Ain’t (overly) broke, so why fix it?
Is it fun? Well, no. Is it fair? No. And that’s a problem.

Since it’s been identified that leather doesn’t have enough uses to meet demand and cloth is spread too thin between all armor tiers, I’d actually like to see the leather-made insignia as an option. It could even be used as an additional gold-sink by adding an extra vendor item cost to it for the convenience.

( Picture added for humor’s sake. )

Ah, but thanks to this thread, I relive some old favorites and chuckle at some new ones. Keep it going!

So tempted to make a Revenant with the candy cane skin, just throwing delicious diabeetus at people.

Don’t have too much candy, you’ll (swing!) BREAK YOUR TEETH!

Yeah, I can see that being amusing. :P

How about a hidden aggro counter that goes up the longer you stand still? That’ll get the AFKers killed, and then they’ll stop counting for event scaling!

basically, in part to the price of silk, and the design of ascended crafting, cloth users have to work harder for the same results.

Is this a good design?

I’d go with No.

Now that silk and soft wood have suitable material sinks, it’s probably time to adjust their crafting formulas back in line with the rest of the game. (Or, conversely, adjust the other formulas to match, but I’ll leave it to the expert on what that might do economically.)

I don’t have a huge stake in it either way, other than insisting on good, transparent, parallel design. The formula changes were blatant manipulations at the time, and that’s not something that ever felt good to the players.

Of course, I’d rather not see the goods in question hit the price floor again, either. I’m not in a rush for hasty solutions, and I could see it being stealth-patched. The secrecy would last a whole hour before grateful players flood the forums, but I wouldn’t see a need to announce it.

The Pirate Sledge. Ain’t nothing like hammering their faces with a rusty anchor!

I’m glad someone agrees! My Charr even got a special hammer from an Asura who named it grandly for its properties. Presenting, the A.N.C.H.O.R.:

Action
Negating
Crowd
Harassing
Opposition
Recker

…okay, so not every Asura’s a genius when it comes to spelling.

Currently freaking out over a potentially major career/life change

For you Rauderi

Life is …

That is oddly soothing and terrifying at the same time.
Much like life.
Thanks, BooDuh.

So, more random tidbits!

I sneak GW2 forums at work.
I graduated top of my high school class. It didn’t mean squat in college. :P
I love Charr for many reasons, but most amusing is their casual brutality, and yet I loathe MMA for the same reason.
Most of my television amounts to anime off Crunchyroll or what episodes I can catch of Castle and a few other humorous dramas. Asking me about actors is an automatic failure.

How do you want to unlock Specializations?

Gem Store, obviously
/sarcasm

As I was thinking with how the Trait system should have been, I’d like to see class quests of some kind, possibly an instanced mini dungeon.

If there’s enough lore to support it, I’d be cool with a small chain of quests to unlock it per class/account.
