One of my Guardians is a self-insert character imported from a LARP I played for many years. The best combat healer for many years, truth told. A bit too old for that now, but I still wistfully dream of going back once in a while.

I want to mix and match also so I haven’t purchased outfits and probably won’t ever.

Much more reasonably stated than many in the Outfit War.

Personally, I do hope they make a new set or two. Might be too much to ask for a new look every quarter, but to have one set available via gameplay, like Carapace/Luminescent , and one set for the store would be a fair step toward happier players.

Why are so many calling for armor to be released in the gem store? Why not ask for armor to be released in game and outfits in the gem store?

I do know one thing though, if they put armor in the gem store there are going to be threads complaining about that.

Point.

I have to wonder how many people grousing about “outfit-centric GW2” bothered to pay for gems to get the current armor bundles, the Lawless pieces, or have a set of in-game Carapace/Luminescent armor.

I have my eye on a few armor bundles, but I haven’t made characters I’m considering for them yet. The outfits are handy and free to swap. I’ll worry about mix-and-match at 80.

I’m curious if ANet has a metric for gems purchased with cash and what items those players bought. I doubt they’d tell us if they did, of course. :P

You know that feeling when you put someone else’s glasses on for fun, then everything feels wrong and you might puke? That’s the feeling I get when I try to play now. And no matter how much one messes with the options, you’ll never get it to the way it was before.

I’m not saying “I feel like puking” just because I don’t like it. The way it is now makes me physically ill. I am unhappy with these changes.

Yeah, I get that wobbly feeling too. I can replicate the ‘old’ settings and things work fine, but yesterday’s experiments with greater FOV and character height led to a lot of shaky-cam. And first-person mode in combat was a blurb of WTF. I can people being amused by it, but it was just limbs and torsos everywhere.

I often work a lot of night hours, and they have been doing a lot of sleep studies lately. It has come up on social media a couple of times too, but the blue light from monitors and screens like cellphones, tablets, and your computer disrupt your circadian rhythm. If I remember right it inhibits the production of melatonin in your body that helps trigger sleepiness.

In turn if you don’t sleep long enough or restful enough to hit REM, your brain does not repair itself from it’s daily wear and tear, which in turn leads to lack of concentration and possibly memory retention problems. Oh and you are tired a lot too.

At work they suggested at least an hour prior to bed time turn off all light producing electronics to let your body get tired. Don’t know if there is a scientific time, but they were trying to be reasonable and give us suggestions to help sleep better.

As a note, melatonin is available as an OTC supplement at most pharmacies. I’ve taken it before bed and noticeably slept better through the night. (No, I don’t have stock in it. :P) Not sure if it was the cold or the melatonin boost, but it was also harder to wake me up in the morning. =P

Some basic advice on body posture for gaming and general computer work:

  • Chair height should be enough that you can comfortably keep your feet flat on the floor. Frequent tucking and crossing your feet can cause ankle problems.
  • Table height should be level with your forearm resting straight, parallel to the floor. Your wrist should also be straight without too much curve upward or downward. If you use some variety of mouse instead of a trackball, consider getting a gel pad to support your wrist.
  • Screen height should allow you to look straight forward. Try not to lean or hunch, as that throws your upper back out of alignment.
  • Leave your seat at least once an hour. Walk around for a little bit. Extended sitting can cause clots, and it’s been documented to happen in people with more vascularity, so it’s more important for active, fit individuals, especially runners.

Stats nerf after update (3/16)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Part of the perception problem is we’ve been living with overpowered 80s in downscaled areas for almost a year. It started with the Traits redesign, when the mobs were reduced to account for the lack of stats through level 30. (Yes, it was a bad idea to begin with, but I’m theorizing the rationale.)

The legion of 80s would plow through events much faster than was appropriate, so their next step was to scale the max-level characters more appropriately. I guess the crowd crowing about how “easy” the game is just got an artificial difficulty bump. /shrug

Imbalanced asc armor costs by class

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Well thought out but fatally flawed in my opinion. You’re asking for Elonian leather to be as lousy as Damask to create. Making leather armor the same as Dams will simply stop players from crafting medium armor.

If Damask (or asc armor in general) is lousy to create is a matter of opinion. Medium Armor users will definately have the short end of the stick with my suggestion but they were able to craft the cheapest asc armor for ever since it got released.

My solution wouldnt put them at a disadvantage compared to light or heavy classes, so even if Damask or asc armor in general is in your opinion lousy to create, it would be equally lousy for everybody.

Thats not given with the status quo.

You’re asking Anet to make leather as expensive as cloth. Ridiculous topic.

He’s asking that less time-gated Damask be used in the crafting process. The solution he proposes would increase leather value so that people actually want to trade in it.
I see no losing portion of this proposition.

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

When you look at your ability to earn silk, you should keep in mind how much work you had to do to reach point A.
You may be looking at now, without thinking about it, and say hey! i ll use some of these excess mats from leveling alts!
keep this in mind
1) your bank and stored items are your savings, representing many hours of play
2) once those charachters level, it will be a lot harder to obtain the same amount of low level materials with them, and it will be a lot less entertaining to be on those areas.
3) you need 7200-10800 silk, if by selling all your excess materials for a week, you were able to get 600 silk, it would still require you 12 to 18 weeks, just to pay for the silk in ascended.
4) If you sold anything that you may need to buy later, you basically lost 15% of the gold in that transaction, if prices stay the same.

Anyhow just things to consider.
regardless it doesnt really address the main issue of the OP which is the imbalance of value/requirement of silk within the framework of damask and ascended armorcraft

All issues I readily accept. Money is number and a tool, especially in a game. As long as I’m in the black, I’m good.
The advice is appreciated, especially since #3 still sticks my craw.

I’m hoping Wanze’s revamp of the thread gets some appropriate attention, as I’d like to see resolution to the system issue in Ascended armor crafting.

"No-grind philosophy"

Rauderi.8706

I find that dynamic events often don’t spawn frequently enough. I don’t necessarily have to do them, and if you’re in that area too long, you’ll see it plenty of times, but you can wander to where there’s more to do. (Not very heroic, I know, but you’re a busy person with maps to fill!)

I find it’s really easy to get distracted by the game, sometimes. You could be out exploring the map, find a resource node, then another node, then an event chain pops up and drags you halfway across the map, then another node, vista,… and somehow you end up back where you started two hours ago. =P

Point is, you might have to force yourself to break away from spots you’ve done and continue to less populated areas. You’ll get exploration XP, and the mobs have bonus experience because they’ve been unkilled.

Also, welcome to the game!

With the new daily structure, the incentive to go to WvW is much gentler, rather than a “no dessert unless you finish your WvWegetables,” which could mean a lot less resentment.

I could be wrong about this, but it also seems that WvW dailies encourage people to accomplish generally useful WvW goals. By comparison, world completion in WvW maps only required people to run to points of interest and get the hell out before the tower flipped again and they were killed by another server. And that behaviour doesn’t seem especially helpful, honestly.

That specific facet had escaped my notice. Thanks for bringing that up, too.

I can see a few motives for the change as the game moves forward. Dragging players to WvW wasn’t terribly productive, even though it has led to an above-zero capture rate on participation. (None for me, thanks. I don’t enjoy severely one-sided match-ups that last for weeks on end…)

It wasn’t good for WvW to have reluctant or hostile players clogging up spaces. It wasn’t good for the PvE-oriented crowd, and it didn’t help WvW players.

With the coming expansion, that’s another map that adds to the rotation. This opens the possibility of a borderland or main map not available at all. If it wasn’t fun waiting weeks for your color to come up, waiting a year for the exact map and color rotation would cause tableflipragequits.

With the new daily structure, the incentive to go to WvW is much gentler, rather than a “no dessert unless you finish your WvWegetables,” which could mean a lot less resentment.

Let’s hope they sneak in a reward for the pre-patch 100% and anyone brave enough to do full WvW maps more than once. Not just brave, but patient. Waiting for that color rotation is what kept me from finishing 100% for two years.

And, truthfully, WvW needs some unique rewards for those who enjoy it and as incentive to draw new or begrudging players. Because daily ruin capture isn’t doing it. =P

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

As a side note, I acquired a whole bunch of silk yesterday, as the result of casual play.
..of course, it involved the trading post, but I didn’t feel bad about it at all.

I do a fair amount of alt leveling, so I tend to have scores more middle-tier materials that can trade at a reasonably 1:1 basis with silk scraps, or better than that ratio. Linen sat well over 5s last night, so I traded that out for silk 1:1 and kept the profits. From the right mentality, I got paid to farm silk by doing what I normally do, but merely adding barter as a part of it.

The fantastic part, I saved roughly 20-30% via buy orders. …and they still filled up instantly. So thanks to all those “bad, naughty” farmers selling on the trading post. Keep hacking away at those plant meanies and zombies.

Being less silly now, my point is you don’t have to spite the trading post as some evil machination. Or, if you’ve got a chip on your shoulder about capitalism, use the system to beat the system. Or something. >_> Sorry, I’m losing my point in silliness. Perspective matters.

My actual point is, silk acquisition isn’t terrible. The actual material amount is where the imbalance sits. So, in a basic adjustment formula, what would the thought/impact be on making the relevant recipes 2 per bolt/square/ingot and 100 per intermediate ascended material? Still doesn’t solve the cloth-insignia balance, but making thick leather and mithril more in line with silk would promote more trading between them.

Why is silk going up in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

The same threads pop up constantly, with themes of “X, Y, and Z items are overpriced”. Some players want cheaper prices because they desire the item in question, and dislike the costs. Some players understand how the economy works, and ask for minor adjustments (like making Silk 3/1 -> 2/1 for Bolts) to make things more fair. But as far as overall prices are concerned for this thread, the underlying cause is Supply and Demand. Due to the artificial need more more Silk, Demand is high, and thus players are willing to pay more per Silk scrap. This leads to a naturally occurring rise in prices.

Ayup. +1 for fact.

The silk upset has to do with the 3×100 formula than the actual prices. If silk went back to 2×50, a third of what it is now, the question becomes if the market can sustain at a new equilibrium after the initial price slump. If that’s in question, how can we flow more silk into the system to make the 3×100 formula more comparable to leather and mithril? That’s closer to the original question at hand.
Alternatively, how do we safely raise leather, which is already in the tank, possibly mithril, a direct-farm material, so that their use and trade is more in line with where silk is already?
From an gold-sink and economic health standpoint, the latter is probably the better approach anyway.* It would promote more even trade through the TP if T5 materials were closer to 1:1, and the trade fees would drink up a fair amount of excess gold.
Of course, option 2 doesn’t really address the numerical imbalance of classes/weights, which is where the suggestion of leather-crafted insignia entered the discussion several pages back. Raises leather, takes the burden off of cloth, pretty much a win-win, once the market re-stabilizes. Still favors metal/heavy overall, but..eh, can’t have everything?

*(Not a Ph.D. in economics. Consult an actual economist for details. If symptoms last longer than 4 hours, discontinue immediately.)

Best Pet Class/Build?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There’s two classes that get persistent pets in the world: Ranger and Necromancer.

Ranger pets are better suited to what you’re probably looking into, as necromancer pets die pretty easily and have some pretty spotty AI.

After your traits unlock around level 30, there is a trait line specific to pet mastery that should provide some nice benefits. Also, most of the signet skills in the game provide passive buffs to you and your pet.

If you need something more specific, I recommend checking out the Ranger section of the forums or finding a build template via Google.

Happy hunting!

Why is silk going up in price?

It isn’t a concern of mine and your quote is completely irrelevant to my point.

Ignore him. He’s been making irrelevant points for the last several pages now and trying to deflect the silk imbalance to protect a market. Bias is obvious under the thin guise of a champion of a balanced economy.
Nothing against economic balance, of course. I like the stuff I sell to have value.

What the slandering comments fail to address is the systemic imbalance of effort and material between weight classes. I’m not even addressing the role of Ascended as best-in-slot or as a long-term goal, even though as a “long-term goal,” there’s a certain amount of effort or excess that’s on one side or the other of sane. (Building one piece of a 6-piece set in a month of high-level play should honestly be the median, but I won’t speak for ANet’s intentions.)

Pulling myself back from that, the silk prices are the result of natural and artificial influence. In the real world, this would just be a thing. Silk products would be deemed more complicated (until a more efficient method comes around), and the material required versus the material created sets the supply and demand.
This being a game world with a thoughtful development of economics, design decisions need to take more into account than pure economics, so that the systems do not favor or disfavor play decisions too heavily. But, those play-oriented decisions still need to be wary of how they will affect the in-game market. I’m sure many of us have seen those kinds of games, where simple materials cost far, far more than they should, and GW2 is wise to avoid that.

So, as it stands, some of us are trying to conceive of good ideas to send forward, and it seems JS has taken an interest. He may very well have taken some thoughts to the relevant teams already and would not be at liberty to talk about it further. Demanding his presence or bickering about philosophies isn’t relevant at this time.

Idea for new quaggan characters

And here I thought it was going to be a post on playable quaggans.

So happy it wasn’t!

Reminds me that I’d like a Hykraigan for next Wintersday (which lasts several weeks?). Much like the traditional turducken, a Hykraigan is a braised Quaggan with a crisped Krait wrapped lovingly around it, then stuffed into a Hylek’s mouth and cooked in a fire elemental for a tantalizing 3-4 hours. Mm-mm, tasty.

As a note on crafting:

I generally throw myself at crafting systems in games as well. Wasn’t too thrilled with my GW2 experience, but I think a few tips might help move you along. Make sure you have salvage kits and tools, they’re available from every training vendor.

As you get laurels in your daily rewards, track down your major city’s laurel vendor (green laurel thing on the map). They sell one-time starter packs that can give you a huge boost to start, and they sell material bags for whatever tier you may be working in. At endgame, the Tier 6 bags can bring in some decent cash.

I remember my early experience in crafting. Oy. I was level 25 before I got out of Plains of Ashford (level 1-15), because I insisted on crafting my own gear. Pretty hard to do when you go Weaponsmith and Armorsmith. They share the same major material line, so my progress was really slow. Point being, pick two trades that are different enough, if you can. For elementalist, tailor and weaponsmith (if you go daggers) or artificer (for most other weapons) should prevent a similar conflict.
For the best XP, use the discovery system, and it might do some good to look up a leveling guide so you have an idea of what to grab.

If you get your hands on a Crafting experience booster, take some time and get ready to use it. It really helps by adding a chance for the bonus experience you can get. If you get most other kinds of boosters, you can trade them in for “Enchantment” boosters near most Black Lion Trading Post vendors. Those Enchantment boosters can turn into whatever non-combat boost you’d want.

Hope that helps! It’s a long way to 500.

So tired of being outbid by 1 copper

Snark aside, I’ve seen posts from other players that run into automated bidders and the like.

p.buddy, can you give a little more detail on your situation? The kinds of items and the values you’re looking at might give us some clues. I suspect it’s just normal market behavior, at which point, the gap will close toward equilibrium, or you’ll have to be a bit more patient.

If not, try putting your bid to within 30% or 15% so of the lowest sell value. Botters and fast flippers aren’t likely to place bids in that range due to the lack of potential profit after the buy order finishes.

But at 1c per bid increase there’s no reason to do that besides being nice.

It also frustrates the bots and would-be barons who do some of the 1c bidding.

And if the OP is talking big ticket items, 1c isn’t much different from 1s except to determine bid order. And I’d still rather have a robust trading post than an auction house with set bid jumps set by the player/owner.

WouldGW2 be more successful with HolyTrinity?

I had a guy on Reddit tell me yesterday that if I don’t accept the holy trinity, he “doubts [I’ll] ever find happiness in life.”

This game has no trinity. It should never have a trinity. If you want an MMO with a trinity, there are literally dozens of games you can play. Choice is good.

Make the right choice: say no to strict role specialization.

“Y’all need Treesus in ya life. Y’all don’t need three roles, you only need one, and that’s the servant of our mord and salivator, Mordremoth. …Lord and savior. I said lord and savior. …Whatever, I’m gonna go wreck another resort town or blow up an orphanage somewhere.”

See, this is why trinity arguments are bad.

its less about instant gratification, then having to bid your way up 1 copper at a time until the sale occurs. I think if on a 1 gold item, bids went up incrementally by 1 silver, reaching that happy medium underneath the lowest sale price would occur faster. There is only so far a bid can go up before it reaches the lowest current listing of that item. I think it would be good for the economy to push people to bid closer to that value. My proposal wouldn’t change anything for the high turnover items, this is more about items that take weeks to sell/buy

Please don’t assume things about the economy. -_-

There are several items that aren’t worth a full silver, and the increment of silver to copper is a factor of 100. That would blunt the fluctuations in the small-item market, just so you could feel better about not placing a proper bid in the first place on larger-cost items. :\

Need a way to report emote spammers

Block spammers, you won’t see their emotes anymore.

It’d be much easier to block them if their names were selectable. Wouldn’t even be an issue if I could right-click/block.

The Counter Mechanics

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think part of the problem there is most of the “control” that’s given to mobs is mostly of the KD/stun/daze variety, and they get those attacks fairly quickly. Boons like stability or stunbreakers are on cooldowns that are too long to deal with it effectively.

Though, I am generally in favor of having unique buffs/debuffs during a fight to add flavor and make the fight more interesting.

I’m more in favor of making damage be the penalty over loss of control or efficacy. Constant stuns and knockbacks can get severely frustrating and annoying, even if the durations are small.

Why is silk going up in price?

At this point, you may be better off opening a separate topic for proposed changes that target the disparity in ascended armor costs for armor classes. I think nobody opposes a fairer approach as long as it doesnt have too much negative impact on other markets, like precursors for example. Or greatly reduces the costs or time investment of all ascended armor because I dont think that is something that Anet wants because it is supposed to be a long term goal.

This is the most sensible thing I’ve seen in the last two or three pages of this thread. For all the attempted blaming and shaming of the various ideologies involved, none of it makes a difference in the fact that Ascended cloth crafting is imbalanced with the rest of the system. The silk market is just a symptom of that.

I’m not sure what other good ideas will come with reintroducing a more positive take on Ascended crafting, but changing insignia seems like a solid one with at least a little support from ‘both sides’.

If they haven’t already, Gaile or John could hand the idea forward for discussion. We won’t know for at least a few months. (So hey, hold on to all that excess leather~)
