It’s threads like these that bring me to the forums. Yay, community.

Male, age 35
Masters degree in psychology, but burned out on academia
Overly fond of Excel
Currently freaking out over a potentially major career/life change
Never played GW1. Considering it for the rockfur raccoon mini.
Played GW2 since beta. It was love at first Charr-hammer.
I have a bad, bad case of altitis. And yet, not as bad as the awesome peep with 64 GW2 character slots. I am in awe of that person.

I spurn all the usual addictions, except chocolate. Mm, chocolate.
Also a “Wrath baby” and somehow manage to juggle GW2 and WoW.
I’ve been an avid gamer since my wee days. My first game purchase with my own money was Final Fantasy. The original, for NES.
Also an avid roleplayer and have been since high school. I adore well-written characters, but I’ll admit to being a bit elitist about it.
I have latent desires to be a game designer. I’ve been part of a LARP design since its early days, and I enjoy poking new games to suck out their delicious, delicious systemy bits. I hope to write a roleplaying system book or make a board/card game sometime in the future.

Why we arent getting new dungeons

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Rauderi.8706

Carapace and Luminescent say hello. As do the skins I got through the new Personal Story rewards. Tinfoil hat, off.

We’re not getting new dungeons because.. “metrics.” That’s why. Not enough people were doing them. And with all the accusations of kitten and qq orbiting the topic because of “zerkmeta” and other such things, I’m not sure they feel inclined to waste effort on it.

If anything, I want them to release a random/infinite dungeon that scales and rewards based on the number of players. Dynamic content will allow for more reactive gameplay than memorizing paths for stack-and-smack and stale metas.

A few questions from a newb

Agreed with the above about crafting. Use the web guides if you want a fast boost to 400 (and 500), but if it’s just Exotics you’re after, dredge up a few gold and buy from the trading post. Ascended is about a 5-6% step above Exotic, but it’s time consuming and Exotics work just fine.

As for underdog classes, Necro or Mesmer. My friend found the challenge of playing a mesmer to be more interesting (before he quit around level 40 :\)Though, you already have an Engi, which has one of the highest skill curves in the game.

Mordremoth better be like TEQ

I’d prefer if Mordy were like THQ. Dead! Mwahaha.

But yes, I do hope that, even if it’s a Living Story instance, the Mordemoth fight is more complex. I’d love to drag a 5-man guild team to stomp him.
I feel going for a world zerg like Teq is actually counter to being epic, since complication with lack of communication takes away from success and leads to a lot of flailing around by those who haven’t farmed it.

A Treatise on Tipping

Rauderi.8706

I kind of look at it this way: if you aren’t thankful enough to tip the guy or girl who helped port you to the achievement, then don’t take the portal.

Simple.

If the portal is there, I’ll take it. Simple. =P

Silliness aside, I remember when there was a diving goggle perch, before the Zephyrites got all blowed up. I tipped a pretty fair 10s for the mesmer who ported me up.

The etiquette sides on a simple “Thanks” if no announcement for tips was made. Even then, if you’re the mesmer “demanding” tips, call it a fee. If you’re saying “tips appreciated” and you get some, carry on, but if not, don’t throw a hissy fit.

What galls me is that mesmers minding their own business could get harassed by lazy kittens who think they’re owed a portal just by standing there. That’s crass and deserves a mesmer with a sense of humor enough to dump them into the nearest death trap. Or at least charging them for the service ahead of time.

Nicest community?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Did you notice you just prove my point right?
Make people care, and things will become toxic.
The reason you PVErs don’t behave in a toxic way in PVP is only because you guys don’t care about losing or winning in PVP, all you care is that daily reward.

There’s no such thing as “nice community” when you make people compete with each other.

Actually, no, I didn’t prove anything about your point. Us PvEers, as you so put it, very well do care about the result of a PvP win, if we’re there to PvP. The daily structure just so happens to put quite a few people who don’t care, and won’t bother communicating (so you won’t hear them upset), because those doing dailies just for daily’s sake want it in, out, and over. It sounds like you’re just bitter that the bad PvE choices for dailies are shoving unwilling players into PvP and mucking up the competition.

You cannot use two vastly different rewards to compare behaviors between two different game modes. It would be easier to compare a hypothetical situation where Tequatl is a 5-minute run that respawns every few minutes and every win and dropped dungeon tokens. Would there be a lot of qq-rage then? Probably not, because the progress is meaningless and the turnaround time is short.

In game inflation and gold sinks

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I’m sure others like Wanze will rip your statement wide open, but I’ll be a little gentler.

If item rarity is too low, everyone has enough to sate their needs, so they’re less inclined to go to the market. It leads to a high supply, low demand situation. If they’re incredibly common, they get turned into vendors for currency, which adds even more currency to the economy.

The biggest and most effective gold sink in the game is the trading post. As something John Smith pointed out elsewhere, rising values on trading post goods makes it an even more effective gold sink. Big spenders shuck out 15% on a sale of big-ticket items, removing it from the economy.

Elevated prices on trade goods not only keep them from getting vendored, but other players pay the trade value, keeping the wealth in circulation, rather than stored.

So, while the silk example is a particularly cantankerous one, it’s more or less struck a decent balance, if a bit high for most tastes. And it’s an example of where the trading post sits as a gold sink.

Nicest community?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

They’re not any “nicer”.
They just don’t care, that’s why they’re not angry.
This type of attitude is actually even worse than people who gets mad or sad when they lose. They just simply don’t care about pvp in general, that improvement and regret is not necessary at all.

If you put those people in a world boss that’d fail if the people are not coordinate, and the reward is precursor, they’d suddenly become hostile when they fail. That’s the true nature of human being, simple as that.

Stop imposing those hypocritical theories on other people.

You’re comparing the conclusion of a 5-minute match to… an item worth hundreds of gold, hours of play time, and excessive rarity.

Those rewards don’t even compare, so it’s not even hypocritical. Please don’t try to bring flimsy logic just so you can vilify this otherwise wonderful community.

We still don’t know for 100% certainty that resistance will be limited to the Revenant. It could possibly be available to everyone. However building a class speciality around a single boon would not be cool at all.

chosen a name for your revenant yet ?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Rauderi.8706

I haven’t even 100% for sure decided on race, much less name.

Leaning towards female Asura, though. Which will be quite the challenge as far as names go, since most of the lore-appropriate names have been chosen already since they’re all short and 1 word. I’ll probably end up just tossing random names into the name box until one doesn’t say its already taken.

I do have a female Asura named Chaffi that I created for starting gear, that I suppose I could delete and use that name for my Revenant. It IS lore accurate, but I’m not sure I really like the sound of it as a permanent character.

Put a title in front of the name. A lot of Asura have titles.

Yah, that’s certainly an option and one I may have to resort to if I can’t find a normal name that works and I like the sound of. But I’d rather not have a title if I can help it, since with a title you basically have to think up your characters’ backstory in advance to make the title fit that, and I’d rather have a generic name so I can come up with backstory later.

Plus, titles are usually used for particularly important characters, and I tend to play my characters more as “just average people” and not people in positions of power or authority.

Hmm, how does Soulomancer Revvi sound? :P

Ascended isn’t necessary to do the content, not even remotely. The meager 5% increase in performance doesn’t matter, especially in Zerg v Zerg, even less so in the PvE content. So, if that’s your rationale, you’re selling the game short for what it has to offer.

Will Bolts of Damask ever drop in price?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Personally I never understood why Anet made Damask take 300 silk scraps from the start when the other corresponding materials where at 100 mithril ore, 150 elder logs or 150 thick leather sections. Then consider how much Damask is actually needed for an armor set (thanks to the insignias) it was painfully clear that what at release of ascended armor looked like a flooded silk market, would go totally ballistic.

We did have a shock to the supply of cloth during this Wintersday but it was just a temporary thing. So prices will most likely rise again, unless there is a more permanent change in supply of cloth, or the recipes changed.

I don’t really understand why Anet “balanced” it this way to start with, or why they decided to throw in a shock after 1 year of existance. Who knows what they will bring tomorrow. Maybe we will see an overhaul at a future feature pack or when the expansion comes, maybe not.

My guess is that the cloth scraps will continue to rise in price for a while now pushing the price of damask up.

There was a time where silk prices were on the floor, no question about that. But it got thrown out of balance in the other direction after Ascended armor hit. All three professions use it, and it’s unbalanced in relation to the other materials.

Funny thing is, mithril ore is doing fine, even though it’s easily farmable. 100 ore per ingot, but those ingots get used in every weapon profession and armorsmithing.
Leather is still pretty close to the floor because it’s only used in a few professions, but I’m noting I have a little trouble getting it naturally. (Not a huge complaint. If I get impatient, the Trading Post is there.)
But silk and other cloth is out of hand, and the prices on all cloth goods are artificially high because cloth is only generated by world drops (loot bags or salvage). The karma workarounds aren’t terribly efficient, and using laurels for T5 loot bags is a wide gamble, so I can’t even count those as options.

I’m not even championing a full revert, though that would have the most equity as a solution. Changing the 3:1 rate back to 2:1 or making the 100/bolt normal at 50/bolt would bring prices down more reasonably and give some relief to light armor classes making Ascended.
Of course, what I see just as likely is making ore and leather take 100/bolt, out of some weird spite and call for “balance.” :\

Condition Damage in PvE Overview

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Spvp and WvW are much higher priority than dungeons balance. Stuff like making more stacks but reducing its durations would be a huge buff to condi roamers and builds like a fearmancer. Bleeding bursting faster equals less time for people to clear them before they do serious dmg.

Buffing condition coefficient is madness. I would reroll back to a fearmancer in spvp if that happens. P/d thieves and other perplexity builds would become god mode in roaming. Again the problem is not condis is the direct dmg. Maybe putting a cap at the maximung bouns you can get to direct dmg would help it. Make like a cap at 25-30. Or rework those flat %dmg traits into something more useful for spvp/wvw.

Instead of buffing condis we just need a nerf to direct dmg or make bosses more resistant to it. And less randon condi application on crit/hit from minor traits.

While I’d like to see a general armor/toughness buff on monsters across the board (with proportionally less HP), that still doesn’t solve the condition stacking issue. It’d certainly be a step in the right direction, though.

I have to wonder if their system could handle having another DoT status type. They managed to add Torment and filter it into several weapon sets, so that could be an option versus raising condition caps for stuff like bleeding.

Of course, a solution like that would have WvW/PvP implications with condi cleansing and condition builds already being suitably powerful there.

Cloth nodes - Why not in-game?

Well, remember that while jute, cotton and linen come from plants, wool (sheep and dolyaks), silk (worms) and gossamer (spiders) come from animals.

But they could make it so the harvesting tool has 150 uses instead 50, and that one would work for all of them. Shearing or cutting cocoons with a sickle would make sense. There’s better tools, but it’ll work.

And imagine people running around after sheep and dolyaks to sheer them.

Heh. Hilarious.

Some other games included some kind of harvesting skill based on scraping up bodies. It’d be possible to turn slaughtered dolyaks, grubs, and spiders into “cloth nodes” for that require harvesting tools. It wouldn’t even necessarily have to make scrap, but a pre-scrap that tailors can make into scraps.

Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Get yourself an event and beat it
Have some more forced PvP, have some more WvW
It doesn’t matter if it’s something you hate
Just eat it, eat it, just eat it, eat it
Just eat it, eat it, just eat it, eat it, ooh

There needs to be a forum page dedicated just to this. XD

What's a Bad Player to Do?

yes, they will be. But google the meaning of the word, you will be surprised how misused it is.

Well, according to Google: “a person who believes that a system or society should be ruled or dominated by an elite.”

So, yeah, they use it properly. Which is why a lot of people have come out in support of the OP. Being lorded over by some schmuck’s limited idea of “how to play” isn’t any fun. That doesn’t mean a player shouldn’t try to improve, but it’s not about following builds. It’s about learning why those builds work, studying encounters for their design elements, and adapting those to one’s play style.

Legendarys Easier? what?

There is no reason to make legends easier to obtain than they already are.

Spite.
Equity.
Telling RNG to sod off.
Yeah, there’s plenty of reasons.

I dont really see an upside to this but plenty of downside. Gonna have to disagree OP.

That’s more polite than the F* No I was going to use.

Also, I’d suggest ANet revisit the Fire Elemental meta. 10-15 minutes for the escort and defense pre-event, and the FE dies in seconds.

The FE wait would be fine if it didn’t spawn non-elites that vaporized within a second. More frequently. A new champ every 10 seconds would be fine. Not like they drop bags anyway. :\

Cloth nodes - Why not in-game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I don’t think it takes much effort to add cloth harvesting nodes in-game.

Just so you’re aware, that has nothing to do with why there are no cloth nodes.

I’m sure Wanze will be along any minute to explain in detail why there are not and never will be any cloth/leather nodes.

There could be, but it’s probably not worth introducing at this point. Then again, for my best example, I’m still not all that sure how well that particular game’s economy is. The real estate is psychotic there. :P

Short answer kind of boils down to the path by which cloth enters the game. While it’s present as straight drops by some mobs, it also comes from salvaging items that the game’s economy would rather not see sold to vendors. Which, curiously enough, adds a gauge to the value of cloth gear on the trading post.

Not the overall best answer, and I’d really rather see harvest nodes, but GW2 wasn’t built that way, and it’d be a huge effort to change course.

John previously stated that the silk requirement is working as intended.

Kinda did-ish, pages ago. Though, yes, between the adjustment of player behavior and other content sneaking a bit more silk into the market, it’s looking rather stable.
I continue to applaud how well balanced GW2’s economy is. It’s handled bumps like silk/Ascended and elder wood/foxfire pretty well.

Though, tangent to my question above, since the silk market isn’t that bad (not gonna kew and cry about a few silver :P):
Have you had any moments where you look at the market reaction to something you consulted with and said to yourself “I done kittened up”?

John, did it ever happen that a new feature or game mechanic that was proposed internally by the dev team was vetoed by you because it would have too big of an impact on the economy?

50 Times a week, I am the destroyer of the designers intention to make people happy.

If only you could tax happiness.

But.. he derives happiness from taxes. He’d have to tax himself, which would make him more happy and… the universe would implode from the recursion.

Ahem, kidding aside.

(In case no one’s actually asked:) In looking back on the silk market and Ascended crafting, do you feel that the right course was taken in the non-parallel requirements?
With metal and wood, both easily farmable and requiring less per equivalent ingolt/plant/bolt to silk’s 3:1 to make, and Damask requires double the equivalent product to craft. Do you feel it was an overcorrection of the market, or has the dramatic price spike been a good thing for the economy?

And I suppose the same could be asked, with less complaint, about the similar non-parallel for soft wood compared to other wood tiers.

Things you found confusing as a noob

Definitely the combo fields……I had no idea that they existed or how they worked for the longest time.

The term isn’t offensive at all, no matter what context. It’s not 2005 anymore.

/shrug

Yes it is. Gamers still commonly use it as a derogatory term to insult other players. “Noob” does not = “newbie” which is the term that the OP should have used in his/her post heading.

Newbie is someone that lacks awareness because they are new where as a noob is someone that lacks awareness because they are just too lazy or arrogant to learn (roughly speaking). Don’t blame me, I did manufacture these terms, its just what the gaming community has created for itself :/

Well, just like certain other derogatory terms, it’s okay to call yourself a noob, if you’re part of that demographic. =P

Well, assuming that legendaries will be easier to get is flawed… but for the most part this has turned into an argument over skill vs time when it comes to getting a legendary.

Right now, it’s mostly time. And money. And praying to RNGsus.
The precursor is the “hardest” part of getting a legendary. That should say something about its creation process.

They could add washing lines behind some houses where we can pinch stuff. More likely they’ll just remove cloth from the game instead though :P

the mental image about that is hilarious. Just imagine some dude in armor with glowy weapon snatching your fresh washed cushion covers and cutting them to silk scraps to make armor out of it later. 10/10 would want

Then the NPC owner of the cloth comes out.
“You have a kittening Legendary and full Ascended gear! Leave me my cloth scraps and my dignity!”
Then the NPC attacks, you kill it, and loot it for more cloth~

…What? Lots of people want to be eeeevil in this game anyway. Let ’em.
