Dear Devs, how about infinite-transmutation?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

An infinite use transmutation item would need to cost a LOT to offset the lost sales from the glamour “whales” that currently buy charges.

By “a LOT”, I’m hinting at $100+.

There is absolutely no way they could offer it for less than that without losing significant revenue.

I have to wonder how many of these “glamour whales” actually exist and whether they are a significant impact on profit.

’Specially considering the ways to get ahold of charges outside of paying a dime.

Funny thing is, charges are reasonably priced. It’s (if I recall correctly) 5 for 150 gems? That’s a couple of bucks. More than enough worth to throw money at not-grinding cities or horking up 15-20 gold.

I like the idea of an infinite transmute charge though. Would it be worth 3000 gems? That’s like paying for 100 charges. Question is, would that be better profit than letting people buy them a little at a time, or would it spur other sales on armor sets? Could they focus on new armor sets instead of outfits? I know some people would dig it to have their mix-and-match potential back.

Any casual dungeon/fractal guilds on SoR?

Two years in, and I still haven’t run all the dungeon paths. That’s just silly.

My interest is finally running high, but I’m having trouble finding people who are up for it when I’m active, around 9pm-ish Eastern. I’m still leery about LFG, until they fix the two-person vote-kick issue.

So, are there any low-drama guilds out there that run dungeons and fractals regularly?

Welcome to the game!

Echoing the above, Engi can be hard, but the rewards can be pretty spectacular.

If you see me about on the NA servers, feel free to ask for questions or help.

As for late game content, dungeons and fractals are the only things where people get really huffy about builds, and most of that is old content they try to speedrun. If you’re using the looking-for-group tool, just be mindful of what the people are advertising. Or if you make your own, be clear about your group intent.

Medium armor’s always been a tough case.
http://www.gw2armor.com/charr/female/medium_list.php has most of the armors available that aren’t gem store. Though, gem store might be an option. >_> The magitech and Aetherblade sets are very steampunk, and I’ve pondered getting them myself.

Other than that, Dustfinger’s got the right idea. You can find muted but “soft” colors in the pink/purple range, or experiment with yellows and oranges. They’ll be cheap on the trading post, since they’re not as popular. Yellow and orange will fit better with a ‘rustic’ color palette as well.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

If we’re still fishing for ideas here…

Trait Dungeons

I know, weird thought, but here it goes (and I may have mentioned earlier? Kinda wish the search function worked properly…):

Instead of tiny, annoying, time-exhaustive tasks for one measly trait, have themed instances. Mini-dungeons, basically. So what’s the theme? That depends on the track.
Adept power line? Wreck an army in Harathi.
Master healing line? Survive the swarm in Mount Maelstrom.
Toughness line? Protect/carry a bundle/Mcguffin through hostile territory.

The reward is the entire block for that trait line at that tier.

There’d be Only 10 to design, since they’re done by package instead of individual trait. (Or one for each trait, if you’re feeling really, really ambitious.) Or maybe 15, if there’s a want to include Grandmaster lines, but I’m fine with those being level 70-80.
Or maybe 25: 5 Adept packages, 5 Master packages, and 15 for the singular Grand Master traits.

Alternately, if we’re not feeling the efficient version, have trait NPCs that start world events that other people can jump in on as they’re going.

And I’m rambling. =P But the idea’s there.

tl;dr of what really should be in the new system:

*Immediate activation. No waiting for events that won’t show. If one’s busted, then the player knows how to identify the source and report it.
*Scaling participation. Bring your friends or do it alone. It shouldn’t take 25 people to do a trait meant for one person.
*Efficiency. Chasing low level traits is bad, and players need them as soon as possible to allow for builds to start and experiment.
*Choice. See also immediate activation. If we can’t be efficient, at least let us choose which traits we get for finishing trait tasks.

- – -

And really though, move Adept/Master/Grand Master so that we get to toy with traits sooner. Really. Please. Waiting for 80 to get these traits doesn’t let us experiment with them during character development.

  • Names are very important to me, I spend a lot of time on them, there’s simply no excuse not to be satisfied with a name before finalizing the character creation process. For those that need help, there’s a plethora of name generation sites on the web:

http://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Names

Agh, names. -_-
I’m usually pretty good with it (aside from a weeaboo lapse on my elementalist that I corrected with a contract…), but Sylvari and Asura have such pathetic naming schemes.

Especially Asura. You show me a college professor who publishes only by his/her first name, and.. well, I’ll be bloody surprised.

Raids are coming to GW2!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

Given that every time I force myself to do events such as the Champ Risen Abom, I see players downed by every swing — yes, very much agree that the GW2 dungeons are experienced as easy because of walk-throughs and practice.

That’s going to be the major thing as the devs start to consider how to keep raid content interesting. Honestly, is it ever? No matter how they handle it, the biggest proponents will devour it within a month and kew for more, because they’ll practice ad nauseum.

Doing a raid like an old-school MMO isn’t going to cut it for longevity. It needs a sufficiently random element to extend play time and keep players from developing rotes like stack & smack.

Then again, “better boss design” has been discussed at great length elsewhere on the boards, so hopefully the devs can focus on dynamic fights that, while one can practice, remain a matter of execution instead of build prep.

I’ve changed names twice so far. Once by completely recreating the character (though I forgot his fur pattern!) and the other I decided to get a name change.
I’m still so, so tempted to un-pun my main character’s name. >_>

Raids are coming to GW2!

Is it a megaboss (teq, wurm) ? a 10 man dungeon ? a 25 player dungeon ? The more I read this thread, the more I think we (including me) are arguing over totally different things.
Personnaly I am a lot in favor of new megabosses (and the return of previous ones) however I am deeply against 10 player dungeons.

- Are there any mechanics in GW2 that prevent group based instanced content to be facerolled using the same tactic over and over again (i.e zerker stacking) without making it obnoxiously hard/long for players that do not optimize their characters at 100% ?

One of the big issues with GW2 is that its combat style and mechanics isn’t well suited to 25-dudes-kill-a-dragon battles. Conditions are a mess, treating a boss like an object forces a PVT gear set because of crit immunity, CC is nearly worthless against Defiance (and even more pointless against their new godkitten version of it that prevents cripple/chill/etc)…

The best way to handle raid design in GW2 is to, oddly enough, emulate PvP to some degree. Multiple, synergistic threats that are allow CC and each becomes a puzzle of how to deal with each one.

I still remember the lovers fight in Catacombs. After so much Defiance frustration, do you realize how GOOD it felt to hammer those suckers away from each other? That position mattered? …The fight’s not hard, but at least its exemplary.

Or Twilight Arbor and faux Destiny’s Edge. A lot going on in that fight, but a knowledgeable team can wreck it without too much hassle.

I do want to be optimistic for raids, but it needs to be handled very carefully, from fight design to rewards. Not to mention, setting a static number like 10 or 25 is far too outdated a concept.

Precursors selling for 65 Gold on TP!

Rauderi.8706

He’ll argue next that they can just increase the drop rate of precursors and/or have a special weekend with an even higher drop rate of precursors to flood the market temporarily to compensate for the demand shock.

What he’s trying to do is change a system that is more or less run by players to one that is run essentially by Anet where prices are capped at what he personally feels is a “fair” price. I’d swear he’d be happier if there was no economy and everything in the game was vendor based.

I’ve seen someone’s argument that suggested (or outright stated) as such.
I facepalmed.
I can understand the frustration, though. The original design for this was badly plotted, but there’s not an easy fix, since high-end materials are interwoven with both precursors and the rest of the end-game economy.
Then again, the market will shift and adjust if a change does happen. I’d accept that in favor of a more respectable system.

I suspect the trait system revamp is being Cantha’d. As in, if someone mentions it in an interview, it will be the basis for a funny glower, but nothing will be said.

Then again, maybe today someone in a position of power at anet will see this thread and at the very least skim through it and slowly, grudgingly come to the realization that the trait system revamp was a bad idea, badly implemented, and that person will stand up and say, “This was a bad idea, badly implemented and we should darn well do something about it! Cantha! Cantha! Cantha!”

And all the guys working on all the stuff will take up that rallying cry: “Cantha! Cantha! Cantha!”

And they’ll revert the trait system revamp.

Or maybe not.

I wonder if it’s possible to send the thread contents directly to upper management. Getting those doofs to understand how bad this is might get them to allow more team investment on getting them changed.

While I don’t have anything against humans in an MMO/RPG, they’re not aesthetically interesting. No new shapes or colors.

Getting into GW2, I knew I was going to play a Charr from the get-go. Their anatomy and biokinetics were an instant draw. Add the casual brutality and almost comical irreverence, and I was sold. On top of that, it’s easy to tell stories with them, right down to their names:
Spaiten Maluscrack (canonical, not his in-game name :P), Chagra Fademist, Eidol Thundersoul… they all say something about the character in just two words. Glorious.

I made some pretty rockin’ humans, though.
Sylvari went from “oh look, plant elves….” to “wow, what a verve for life and exploration!” It’s hard to stay mad at the salads.
Asura are, as someone mentioned above, gnomegremlins with little morality beyond science. How Rata Sum is even still floating is a mystery, given their entire council is corrupt. And yet, funnymidgetslol. I still enjoy them, kinda.
Norn. Sigh. Oh look, giant dwarves. Drink fight yadda yadda bore. I play them grudgingly. Them? I think I have one.

With so much variety, it’s hard to go elsewhere for a race in GW2.

1.) dungeons scale down to 1 player (like the story missions)

  • makes dungeons viable for small groups also
  • makes hardmode possible (1 player can switch hard mode on)

Is it bad that I would shell out gems for this? >.>

Sometimes, you want to do a dungeon with one friend and not drag unknowns, pugs, or jerks along with you. Sometimes your guild can only muster 3 or 4 people. Dungeons scaling to size would be ideal for getting them run more often.

Gaile-

I’ve polled my guild to ask them what they want to do. The answer, overwhelmingly, was dungeons. Now, nearly everybody ALSO said they liked Living Story stuff, but dungeons came up time and time again as “we want to do more of this.”

If ArenaNet could commit to adding a new full dungeon (story + 3x explorable tied in with Living World with corresponding weapon and armor sets) every 6-9 months, you’d be providing endgame content for your most active players.

Imagine the Scarlet fight was Story and we got explorables investigating her creations! Marionette path, Toxic hybrid path, Holopath…

Better dungeon support overall would be grand. Right now, I don’t feel comfortable running because pick-up groups are a minefield of speedrunners and even more toxic kittenkittens who do wretched things like join groups then party-kick its participants.

Either that, or they don’t plan to use them after all this. The fortune scraps went the same way. Now that the Zephyrites’ ship has come crashing down, will there even be another event for them?

This too, yes. I have several bits and bobs from other story events like Lion’s Arch that are still in my inventory. It’d be nice to convert them into something so I know I can ditch them. Even if it’s just to copy the effect of a +10 Luck Essence or make them sellable junk for a few copper.

If these things were wallet-only, then they could just disappear from inventory and it wouldn’t even be an issue.

Here are my updates.

Gathering

  • Increased the amount of gathering nodes, especially the T6 ones
  • Gathering nodes of all levels can be found in every single map
  • There is only one material of gathering tool left per type (sickle, axe and pick)
  • There is no level requirement for those tools

Dungeons

  • Heroes were added to assist you in dungeons. Now you can finish the dungeon by yourself.
  • The amount of tokens required for armor and weapons is decreased, so that every run should give you at least one item.
  • Dungeon tokens can be used to buy precursors as well.

Loot and crafting

  • Fine materials now always is an extra drop and the drop rate has been increased. The same goes for rare materials.
  • Salvaging armor or weapons will return all materials that were required to make it.
  • The mystic forge recipes have been tweaked so that the change for an upgrade has been increased dramatically.
  • All time constraints have been removed from crafting ascended items.
  • All time constraints have been removed from charging crystals.
  • Soulbound and accountbound have been removed.

<.< >.>

While this would doom the economy, I’d be ecstatic for a good two weeks with these changes.

I dunno, pressing 1 might be too arduous for new players. It might be easier if autoattack initiated as soon as a creature was in range.

And since there’s already stars all over the place about where to go, you just click on it and your character walks there automatically! And, y’know, autoattacks everything on the way. No need to play at all, just watch the exciting new GW2 experience!

Another idea that sprung from my mind.
Eliminate PvP everywhere and replace WvWvW with emote dance fighting arenas.
The “army” with the most people who can emote specific actions within a certain amount of time perfectly become the winners.

Any chat comparisons to other games that allow PvP will log out players and redirect them to search results for other games.

Considering WvWvW is mostly who has the most people online at one time, I can totally support dance fights.

But there’s other WvWvW improvements:
As proven by many other games, WvWvW is too complex. Two-server limit, so it’s actually WvW.
Or, even better, include a two-faction system for PvE and let that determine where you show up in WvW!
Or, three-faction, and let the Priory, Vigil, and Whisper duke it out!
(Similar to FF14 and a similarly nonsensical “let’s work together against a common outside threat but fight internally over resources” kinda way~)

Oh, and the best thing for WvW/PvE: Zerg Debuff! For every person over 5 within Range 2000, you lose 1% of your stats.

Oh, would you happen to have a link?

Fascinating data point.
54 sellers and 58 buyers for 58 Dusk. Looks less like market manipulation and more like some dedicated, unfun goldgrinding. Well, some people find it passively droll, but it’s still not good design. =P

Open Cantha but make it an underwater map. That’ll show those fanboys

But.. but then you could add Largos.
On speed-boosting underwater mounts.
And the new [heavy armor class] class.
And sell all of it through the gem store.

Before the CDI on Guild Halls begins, I think it’s only fair that someone asks the big question:

If we come up with what appears to be a solid idea for Guild Halls, will ANet actually carry through with it and put the work into making it and making it right?

There’s no point in wasting time throwing around ideas that will never see the light of day. This isn’t a question that can be answered with a “maybe” or “we’ll see”. This is a “Yes” or “No” question. If the answer is “Yes”, then fine. Full steam ahead. If it’s not, then we don’t need to waste our time on something that’s going to get buried under other projects and come out half-baked, if at all.

Other question, would there be any legal issues with using the specifics of an idea from a CDI? I would think not, or the devs wouldn’t be taking a risk on it, but intellectual property is kind of a sticky issue.
I can imagine scenarios where “we like the idea but we can’t copy it directly” might cause seemingly half-hearted execution of an otherwise solid, detailed concept.

Continued thanks for the ongoing dialogue, JS. So, another question!

Your work usually involve very macro-level, wide-ranging economic work. And there’s a lot of faith in the market to adjust and correct itself. As a roaming gatherer, I’ll add that it’s working beautifully.

Quite often, forum thoughts turn frequently to big-ticket, high scarcity items. What’s your professional opinion about the possibility of wealthy players/coalitions to control prices in the market for scarce items?
(Like snatching up a 1000g p-word to resell it for 1500g or more?)
Is the 15% listing cut a sufficient deterrent?

Thanks much!

it’s vulnerable to control by a few people willing to exploit it.

What’s been bolded is incorrect.

Anyone can make an unsupported italicized statement.

Actually, I can’t recall if JS made any statements on that, or if he’s allowed to. He could explain theories of value/scarcity much more precisely. With actual numbers. Hm, I should ask.

I haven’t poked my toes in on WvW since I got Been There, Done That, but I remember a long, long period of waiting for SoR to stop sucking long enough to get out of 3rd position. Subsequently, SoR huffed a little deathrattle and dropped in the ranking something fierce, and somewhere in that time, I managed to sneak in for my last 6 little bits.

It’d be a lot better if WvW were more even, since it’s so prone to population hikes. It’s not the server with the better players, just the more populace ones. A more frequent color rotation would be ideal. Though, I think with the way they handle matchups now, with matches based on points gained and activity, it might be a little better.

Can anyone confirm?

Still, I’m not a fan of WvW completion being a part of the 100%. Managed to do it, but it wasn’t a good thing. But at least I don’t have to do Dry Top for 100%! Small victories.

Anet can very easily change how much we pay for items in the game. By simply increasing inflation (ramping up faucets or thinning out sinks) they can effectively increase prices….ie how much we are willing to spend. Remember they control almost all of the variables, thus the mostly control the outcomes.

Just because you control the variables does not mean you control the results

What is so hard to understand that the more popular precusors are more expensive because they are more POPULAR

That is determined by the players not Anet

Furthermore, why the hell would Anet cater to any of you?! You guys keep playing the kitten game because you want your shiny Twilight. If I was Anet I would release epic NEW legendaries and make them even harder to get.

IT KEEPS YOU PLAYING

There’s some truth to that. =P

People aren’t protesting the work involved, really. They’re protesting that two of the three ways to get the precursor they want are stuck behind a system that gives no sense of progress. Mystic Forge is just a money flush. Waiting for your exotic drop that never happens in the first place and therefore will likely never-ever be a precursor is more likely to get someone to quit, if a Legendary is their only goal. (I’ve got altoholism, so I’ve got two dozen other goals at any given time. :P)

The only other method is to do a boring gold-grind or play the Trading Post. While this is a fine lesson in economics and work ethic, it’s not great from a game design perspective at all. Furthermore, because of the small market, it’s vulnerable to control by a few people willing to exploit it.
One can talk about simple supply and demand for another twenty pages, and that person would still be right in an economic sense, but it’s also short-sighted in a game sense. And possibly in an economic sense.

Some of the concern rests with T6 mats and other items that would spike in value if precursors suddenly became more available. The market can adjust to that.
Also, from a goal perspective, farming X items that come in bits and pieces is more viable motivation than “I’m never getting this one thing because it never drops and the price to buy is a hyperinflated moving target.”

It’s also why a Mystic Forge Token system appeals to few of the people voicing their opinions. It allows for progress and a per-effort basis, instead of random chance or having that effort negated by player-driven market forces.

If your character were real...

I have too many characters. So I’m giving this another go.

Eidol Thundersoul, of the Thunder warband, Ranger of the Blood Legion.

What’s he smell like? There’s the dense scent of the oil he coats his leathers with, the snows of Dredgehaunt, and the lingering leafy aroma that’s more etherial than real.

Peanut Butter
Eidol: What kind of weird paste is this?
Me: It’s peanut butter.
Eidol: What’s a peanut?
Me: It’s a plant. I’ll pull up the Wikipedia page-
Eidol: Grrrr!
Me: What? …Oh, the computer. Eidol, we’ve been over this. It’s not a ghost summoning ritual.
Eidol: Fine. But whoever made this left curdles in it.
Me: No, those are the peanuts. Would you at least try it?
Eidol: …It’s goop. And sticky. Doesn’t smell too bad. Maybe Thunderroar will like it.
Me: Sigh. I suppose you could feed it to your bear.

$300 cash?
Eidol: Someone’s giving me money? What’s the catch?
Me: No idea. Think of it as a little seed money to get started.
Eidol: And you use.. paper? That’s not going to survive a day in the wild. Give me coins.
Me: I suppose we could get you quarters. But that’s twelve hundred of them.
Eidol: That sounds noisy and inconvenient. Don’t you have a bank?
Me: Debit card it is!

Pizza toppings
Eidol: Fried mushroom, sauted zucchini, and some sliced beets, throw in a garlic oil drizzle, and we’re good. …I don’t need the ghosts of dead animals haunting me.
Me: …Are you serious?
Eidol: Of course not! Barbecue the closets animals you can find and roll it up in some dough. I’m hungry, and your world is terrible for hunting.

Dogs
Eidol: No drakehounds?
Me: Closest thing would be a great dane.
Eidol: No murrelows?
Me: The hairless things with the bad breath? Closest would be a chihuahua.
Eidol: Are shepherds good?
Me: It answers the question, at least. Meanwhile, can you take my other dogs with you? Or at least train them?

Math or humanities
Eidol: “Humanities?” Hmph. It should be-
Me: -called Charrities. Yes, I know. I heard that joke already.

Huh, bizarre set of questions. What a fun time.

Malus (aka Spaiten Malus, aka Spaiten Maluscrack) would smell of the metal and leather that grinds his fur during a battle. And the condensation (do Charr sweat?) and dirt and blood and gore that seeps under his armor. Assuming he hasn’t washed. Otherwise, I figure he’s actually pretty clean, being part cat ’n all, though I imagine a kind of earthy scent to go with it.

Peanut butter?
Me: Chunky!
Malus: Meat.
Me: Malus, that doesn’t answer the question.
Malus: The question is stupid and sticks to my mouth.
Me: Mu.
Malus: What?
Me: Nevermind.

$300 cash?
Me: All 20s.
Malus: I’ll take it in gold.
Me: Um, closest thing we have to gold would be gold dollars.
Malus: So… 300 gold? Burn me, that’s a lot.
Me: Not really…

Pizza toppings
Malus: Meat!
Me: On that, we agree.

Dogs
Me: I had a German Shepherd when I was little, and they’ve always been such great dogs.
Malus: I like the little ones with the smooshed faces. They roast really nice.
Me: Malus… No. Bad.

Math or Humanities?
Me: I’m something of a blend of both. Being one of those doofy D&D types, I love a good story, but data and science also appeal.
Malus: Which one lets me swing my hammer at things that annoy me?
Me: …Math?
Malus: Good. I’m going to use this Math thing to club whoever called the other thing “humanities.” It should be “Charrities.”
