I’ve a fondness for silly language things like this, but keeping track of all the varied origins and their rules is typically too much for one person to handle. Heck, spelling out “you” is sometimes too much work. =P

Then again, most people would also pronounce foci as “fo kai” when it should be “fo sai”. And now we being to see why it’s not worth fussing over, especially since the forum won’t accept phonology fonts. =P
Well beyond old news. Those prices spiked with Ascended armor crafting. The forums have been griping about that and precursor inflation for months.

We’ll begin with box, and the plural is boxes;
But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes.
Then one fowl is goose, but two are called geese
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a whole lot of mice,
But the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
When couldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?
The cow in the plural may be cows or kine,
But the plural of vow is vows, not vine.
And I speak of a foot, and you show me your feet,
But I give a boot – would a pair be called beet?

Why shouldn’t the plural of kiss be nicknamed kese?

Yet the plural of hat would never be hose;

And yet to write it, the more I tried,

I concur. I was actually still awake when the patch went live, but I was excited with the changes. I’m glad to see that at least a few of the major sticking points have been reverted.
My personal thanks for nudging up the utility skill unlocks!
That was a change I was really happy to see.
My necromancer also thanks this change. I had three slots unlocked, then only two, but the signet I had on slot 3 was still there, but I couldn’t change it. Maddening! =P
Yesh, they should be announcing these a lot more shamelessly than in the patch notes:
Skill challenges now unlock on an account-wide basis rather than a per-character basis as originally intended.
Utility slot skills 2 and 3 now unlock at levels 17 and 19, respectively.
The elite slot skill now unlocks at level 31.
Elementalist F4 commands, mesmer F3 commands, and guardian F3 commands now unlock at level 17.
Mesmer F4 commands and engineer F4 commands now unlock at level 19.
Skill Challenges are now visible at level 13 instead of level 15.
Get this on the front page with some blinking arrows that say “WE DO LISTEN!”
Though, those level boundaries still need a little tweaking. =P
In no way is the word “focuses” proper English.
Sure it is!

I’m mostly countering the “In no way” portion. =P
Though, “proper” rules aside, by syntax rules, “focuses” could be used as a plural noun.

Technically it should always be written as LEGO bricks as LEGO is the brand name.
S’okay, we do this rather frequently. For example:
You get a “Band-Aid” for your booboo instead of a “bandage.”
And you Xerox something instead of “make a copy or facsimile.”
So I’ll say Legos if I darn well want to~

Been having a similar issue with lag spikes. Not enough to suffer a disconnect, but it’s been lagging for 4-6 seconds, then snapping into position afterward.
Can’t be sure if it’s from my new router or just badly timed with the patch, but it’s been really getting to me.
Hi Chris,
Some of us have been facing stuttering/spiking FPS issues since the Sept patch. Wonder if you could look into it and let us know if it’s something on your side that can be fixed? Or if it’s a graphics card compatibility thing? Unchecking Hi-Res Textures doesnt resolve it.
We are definately looking into these. I am very happy they are posted in the tech support section, makes it a lot easier to round up the info. Thanks!
Oh gods, please. T_T
This may have been badly timed with my new router, but everything I try gives me no relief. Time to take a gander at those threads, and thanks for looking into this!

I don’t think it was an exploit as it was not bypassing normal game play. Nor was it using some bug or glitch.
Personally, I don’t like repeating the same content over and over but I don’t care if others want to put their time into it.
However, I resent GW2 giving us the frequent drop of chests in game without a reliable in game manner through normal game play to get keys to unlock the chests. I understand they need to make money and that some people will spend a boat load of money on keys gambling to get something cool. However, I’ve always felt that manipulative ways to get get money from people is sort of sleezy. Just my personal opinion not necessarily shared by others but is one of those things that has affected my opinion of gw2 business decisions.
Nono, I’m sure there’s plenty who agree with you.
When the keys are $1.56 each, that’s really just an insulting money grab. The discounts get sharp enough to be about $0.90 each in bulk, but then you’re dropping well over ten bucks on it.
If the price dropped to 40 or 60 gems (50-70 cents), I’d definitely buy at least a few at a time.
Now that key runs take much longer (I got one right after the Destiny’s Edge kittenfest in LA), it’s debatable how much that $1.56 is worth. Though.. considering my key runs still net me tons of sellable farming mats, I end up gaining gold and a key.
Yeah, I noticed my targeting has been more frustrating of late. Tab isn’t picking up targets I need, sometimes going off to my side, and the de-select range is much less than range 1500.
The Tab oddness I can deal with (it sucks in all MMOs I’ve played), but the disengage range is getting on my nerves.
Why they keep doing it is because it WORKS…..(hell, it works on ME and I’m explaining the semi-scam to YOU).
Thanks for the chuckle, Grimm.
I’ve gotten taken in by Limited Time Only as well, partially because, well, I wanted the pretty thing and to support the game.
I’m sorry, but the Wii U? Of all the consoles on the market, that is the one you would like GW2 on… I’m trying to be the least rude as possible here, but I did chuckle a little.
Anyhow, Vol is certainly right. ANY console version of GW2 would cause problems, we see this going on with many other mmos right now. Certification, console limitations. The entire engine would need reworked. As a longtime FFXI player, I still shudder at the phrase “PS2 Limitations”.
It made FF14 a huge turnoff for some of my friends. Combat in that is like friggin’ molasses compared to GW2. Very pretty, pretty molasses.
But 2.5 second cooldowns for every action ever, even instants was killing me.
GW2 is too active for consoles.
Then again, fighting games are also online, so.. maybe? Eh.
Hey there guys!
I decided to have a go at redesigning the Equipment tab on the Hero panel. This is because I think that the current design is a little confusing, and also because I think that there’s other character information that ought to be shown too: such as your Order, your crafting levels, world completion etc.
I’ve attached an image!
As you can see, on the left is your character and equipment slots (all of them), and on the right is a tabbed panel. The tabs are General, Equipment, Wardrobe, and Dyes
I also wrote a pretty lengthly reddit post on r/GuildWars2 going into a lot more detail about it, which you can see here.
All the friggin’ +1s!
I really hope the devs see this and get crackin’ on it right away.
What about proportions, golden ratio and the like. Could it be that the metrics still exist, just some people grasp them intuitively (when it comes to aesthetics/art)?
Not WildStar.
ZING!
And if you can find a golden ratio in the atrocity that is kittenbob to explain that show’s insidious popularity, there might be a few gold in it for you. =P
Popular things happen, sometimes in spite of what people say should/will be popular. The only way to know is to find those signs of approval. Y’know, by asking.
(Back to sincerity:) Unfortunately, after a new patch comes out, it’s hard to convince players, especially long-time ones, to chop time out of their play to send up a survey. Best shot might be in email questionnaires, but even then, those opinions are likely to be polarized more than the norm.
Maybe some other inspirations from the wiki:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Charr
Names
Charr first names often have names based off of their culture (e.g., Pyre, Ember, Forge). Along with this male names are also sharp sounding with the consonants (e.g., using D, R, T, G, K, etc. used in names like Rytlock, Gron, Dinky) whereas female names are smoother (e.g., using C, L, S, Z, etc. such as names like Bathea, Kalla, Elexus); both genders often start with a sharp consonant though, but this is just generally and exceptions to this do exist. Some charr use Roman or Greek (inspired) names as well.
Charr surnames consist of two words put together, one of which (either suffix or prefix) denoting the warband of the individual (e.g., Rytlock Brimstone is of the Stone warband and Scylla Rustcloud of the Rust warband). Charr individuals generally get to pick variations of their surnames within the forming of their first warband which express their personality, ideals or history, though some limitations may apply.
Members of the same warband can also have their warband name in different order than other members of their warband, though this is rare – some examples include Lightbringer Swordshatter and Legionnaire Bloodsword of the Sword warband, and Vitus Silverpick of the Pick warband (where all other warband members have Pick as the prefix of their surnames).
[Edit: Rox was Rox Pickheart of the same band, before Living Story.]
Hm, partially depends on Legion, though it might be nifty to have a multi-legion coalition as a character background~
Blood
Might, Thunder (my warband~), Power, War, Victor, March, Claw, Fang, Edge
Iron
Steel, Gear, Forge, Craft, Boom, Shell

Mostly some generic ideas, but I hope it gets some thoughts going.
Well, it’s like trying to say something nice about the gold accents on the new fine china when there’s a dead skunk on the table, but yeah, I guess it’s not all bad.
Apparently, if you get 40 yards away from the skunk, you can appreciate the china again. =P
Metrics are tools, nothing more.
The problem with too much focus on metrics is that you tend to design a game to match the metrics instead of innovating. I hope that ArenaNet understands this or they will fall pray to the same problem that the social game industry fell into. Too Many Clones. (Or is the AAA gaming industry already at that problem).
Extra Credits: Metrics
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqGcXOksFGgThe above video explains another reason that is applicable to Guild Wars 2. Often metrics based games create inaccessible products only accessible to a niche player-base. This is perhaps what happened in the initial development of this game. Leading to a complete re-design of core systems.
Exactly. Metrics don’t tell you why. (Correlation/causation, etc)
Metrics also can’t tell you anything about something that doesn’t exist because you didn’t make it yet.
Then you have to decide what threshold is worth developing content for? What percentage of the player base do we expect to be power users of a feature/content, how many want it just a few times for the rewards, and so forth.
Oh yeah, and the collections. Junk items worth something? Killing Teq for a spoon?
The world is topsy turvy. =P
OK, so I think its clear I have a few issues with some things in the game as of late (some aspects of the NPE and Traits >:( yeah, those), but be that as it may I think I just wanted to give a quick thank you for the things that i think were just right on this update:
Skill balances:
Really liking A LOT of the skill changes/balances this go through. Seriously. The ranger ones were long over do. Please do not touch them. Please. The Mez scepter, although fun can be a teensy bit OP, but I’m sure that will be easier to balance.Map Changes:
Some waypoint and heart person re-locations. Seems like a small thing, but they feel better where they are, except for the bunny thing in Wayfarers. That feels wrong.TP is taking some getting used to, and I was fairly indifferent about it before, but I can see how its new layout can be more user friendly.
Crafting:
Yeah, I like the recipe navigation A LOT.Combat Reporting:
The ability to track that info on such a specific level has been great for me recently when testing builds and I love it. Probably my favorite thing about this update thus far to be honest.New Level Up icon and Info:
I actually like this a lot. It was long over-do and with a few tweaks i think will be a great tool for first time players.
Positivity on the forums? Madness. I shall join in the crazy.
Traits are slowly getting pushed to more appropriate tasks. Slowly. But the little steps give me hope, and the “we’re listening now, how can we fix this?” on the Trait forum even moreso.
Ranger signet and Beastmaster changes. Yes. It loosened up my beast master build, but I might just keep Predator’s Onslaught~
I about lost my kitten when I saw Torment on Mesmer scepter. I’ve got two builds that deal in disposable minions (one for popping confusion, one for death/overspawning), so I’m working more on using Torment while enemies are distracted and chasing the wrong me.
Trading Post is mostly a plus. A few too many clicks here and there, and it’s missing anticipated profit, but buying got significantly easier. A few larger buttons and a Sell Maximum default/button would do wonders.
Crafting evolved. ‘nuff said. I haven’t seen any other MMO have it so good.
Conceptually, the level-up tooltips are grand, and the rewards can really help a new player/alt get geared without agonizing about it. I worry that the unlocks come too slowly to get a character prepared by level 30, when dungeons open up. Best to withhold judgment until they get some known bug fixes out in the next week or two.
(Devs, my heart goes out to you for a long work weekend that’s probably wrecking your plans.)
ANet uses movement speed as part of their profession balancing,
A valid concern for WvW and PvP, where timing is everything. In PvE, where most of the desire is coming from, there is no need to balance this way.
WvW would be the most difficult, since it’s not only class balance, but map balance as well.
Well honestly, if they made +33% the standard and tossed out anything swiftness-related, I think people would feel a lot better about not having mounts.
Better yet, they could make a toggle-able “sprint” type of skill like some games and have it be independent of your normal bar.
A command that uses Stamina to run.
Think about it.
Everything ready by the first dungeon!
I think this is a very important point to make and one which I didn’t think of! Excellent example of how changes can have unforeseen negative consequences.
The most damaging thing the trait redesign did was further the gulf between developing characters and full-80s. I realize that ANet is backing off of dungeons as content, but what is there is a very hazardous playground with griefers and snobs, only made worse by “noobs” and “suboptimal” players getting the shaft. :\
That’s why it’s important for players, especially new ones, to be ready for dungeons when the game tells them they’re ready.
Here the link Rauderi enjoy but it still don’t show all the changes :p
http://chinagame.178.com/201008/75942001505.html
I meant from the GW2 Chinese client, but.. thanks for the link.
Whoa, whoa….I would not be too fast to ever use that as an example, everyone knows that their Pandora expansion was geared towards an Asian theme so that statement holds no water. I and many others left because of that ridiculous expansion and the destruction of the lore it caused so they are in no way the right example to use here.
/facepalm
Pandaren have been in Warcraft lore since 2002.
Granted, the back half of that expansion was kinda meh. It was beyond meh if you were Horde. -_-#
The reason why China got a separate release was because there were certain things that required censoring (exposed bones, dead pandas) before it could be allowed.
I don’t know what would be a proper comparison, since I haven’t seen details of the China release anyway. So eh. =P
After seeing a red post about how the metrics are supporting our discontent with the new leveling experience, I have some thoughts on how things might scale to feel better for new players and vets. Hoping this can help.
Weapon skills. All of them. Earned by level 10.
One of my favorite things when I started GW2 was picking up every weapon I could use from the vendor and beating the snot out of everything until all the weapons were ready. Even the water ones.
This generally occupied me until level 10 anyway, so I see no problems there. Start with two, unlocks at 4, 7, and 10.
Class specials
Unlocking the special bar early is fine, but dragging some classes out well beyond the realm of patience is not. It may just be Elementalist that’s the big sin, but it’s also the most glaring error.
If I had to put a number on it, all options should be unlocked by 15, if 10 is a little strenuous to a new player. Most other classes should be used to swapping weapons by then, so F1-4 switch shouldn’t be too arduous.
Utilities.
I can understand holding back utility skills a little. It shouldn’t, since skill points show as early as level 3-5 zones. I go to Tela Range on every new character almost right away.
At the lastest, I’d recommend level 10. The player just finished getting weapons, so it’s a good time to open up utilities.
Next slots at 15 and 20? Debatable.
20 and 30 would feel slow, but doable.
Everything ready by the first dungeon!
The original flow was beautiful for this. You had all the tools you needed to take on Ascalonian Catacombs and feel like you had a build started. So what I’m thinking:
Weapons by level 10
All three Utility slots by level 30
Elite skill by level 30
At least 1 full trait by 30 (see below)
Which means traits might have to get fixed too.
So, thoughts? Comparisons? And “make it the way it was before” is just naughty for brainstorming.
Yep, same problem I have. Lots of people don’t take me seriously because I like the game and say so.
D’aww. I still take you seriously.
Mostly because you’re not a plastic bag full of water intended to irrigate certain biological parts.
We may disagree on the ‘goodness’ of the change, but I rarely see you fly off the handle. Stay productive, V.
I hope we can hear from new-new players soon, and see if this onboarding process works out for them. That, and hopefully we can distinguish between “unlocks” and “notifications” for more experienced players. The notifications were fine and all, but it felt like the game was hiding stuff that shouldn’t need to be hidden.
Maybe not something with an direct economic effect, but a buff?
A short Magic Find boost?
Traveling buff?
…doesn’t the game give those when you volunteer to switch maps now? :P
Tried it. Didn’t like it. Reasons are smeared all over the forum.
And yet, I can see how it would be helpful to new players. To think of it, the highlighted features should show up faster, rather than spaced between 1 and 23…
I’m hoping some of it was just a bug, because getting some of those notices as a veteran was just baffling.
And the limit of combat options is understandably infuriating for a veteran player. The pushback of utility slots to make characters even weaker by level 30, when dungeons open, is a terrible idea to prepare them (new or veteran) for more difficult content.
So 12 year olds are impatient and think things are dumb.
My teenagers thought everything was dumb. Insurance was dumb. Taxes were dumb. Eating vegetables was dumb. Chic flicks were dumb. Reading was dumb.
I’m not sure what that proves except that you’ve got plenty more years of that to go.
It’s easy to cast away a kid’s opinion as “just a kid,” but it’s beyond that.
It’s about the gaming experience. Fun. How a player feels as they play. If the player isn’t engaged as they play, that is the result of bad design.
And that’s a shame. I was totally pumped when GW2 came out. I still play every day. But the repeated retrograding of the experience is wearing on me.
And I’m not one of those people who look at WoW’s simplifications over the years and says “wah, they’re dumbing down the game!” Because they didn’t. They replaced outdated progression systems with better balanced, easier to manage (for devs AND players) character options. They made choices potent.
I started a new character yesterday, and got her to 20. Pointedly, I made an elementalist. The restrictions were baffling. While getting a level came with a little chime and dancing announcement panel, the items presented were lackluster. Occasionally useful rings and gear, but nothing I couldn’t already have gotten on my own.
Still, for a new player, it’s actually a steady experience of reminders, so I will applaud that. But this hurts the current, experienced players. For a true altoholic, I think we’ll be able to push through this meh section and get to 40, then everything will feel okay again. …once they re-fix some of the trait requirements again. 100% map is never okay.
I have traveler runes on my mesmer. Either waste a skill or waste your rune slots.
Yup, put a travel set on my Thief, so I didn’t have to waste a skill slot on a signet.
You should be happy you’re not a mesmer. We don’t have a speed signet, no out of combat speed traits, and one reliable (but unreliable) source of swiftness on one off-handed weapon.
This is why I question some of how balancing is done in GW2. Not a major froth-inducing gripe, but a very what-the-huh? kind of thing. I assume it’s a WvW/PvP thing, and I get that. Maybe it was too hard to reconcile those and PvE.
Because, balance issues aside, there’s no reason to hold some classes back, while my warrior can maintain a constant Swiftness+25%. Granted, I traited for that. In fact, I built the entire character around it. Now I just luff him to death~
But yeah, I’ve planned entire builds around speed signets before. Earth-based Elementalist, Marksmanship Ranger, etc. Even respec’d my Engi for the speed shoes trait (that I thankfully had before April).
I can appreciate that GW2 devs want this to be a build choice, but it’s limiting and culls exploration of more effective or interesting builds for the sake of convenience.
But, didn’t they buff the mesmer scepter? For it to be torture, you should really have to use the pre-patch mesmer scepter.
Torture?
I think you mean…
B-)
Torment
/powerchord!
What could’ve been done is.
- Make a survey
- Post the link to it on the forum / send it via ingame mail
- See what the people who actually play the game have to say about itI’m pretty sure it would’ve looked different
Seriously. How can they have “metrics” they’re so proud of if they don’t ask their entire population about their content? You can track behaviors all day long, but you can’t establish motivation or feeling by behavior alone. Not just what, but why.
I’ll play HARDCORE MODE then:
Everything unlocked at lvl 1
ONLY THE BEST OF THE BEST PLAYERS CAN HANDLE THIS!!
Tribulation Mode even gives you enough skill points to have your Elite skill unlocked!
Oh no, choices! The horror and confusion~
Only if infantile mode paves the road with rainbows. Accompanied by happy faced clouds pointing the way.
This would make jumping puzzles much less frustrating.
“Underwater Combat (Unlocked at level 8 with underwater weapon skills 1 and 2)”
I can’t swim.
Until level 8.
What the … ?
I mean, I can swim, I guess, but I’ll be drake food. Who seriously thought this was a good idea?
You get what you expect.
I don’t think that’s actually a saying.
And no, you don’t always get what you expect. That’s where the term “pleasantly surprised” comes from.
I prefer “serendipity.”
So craft it and…
reskin it.
B-) Yeeeeaahh! /rock-chord
Snark aside, I thought it was adorable.
The only thing that could bring me back is the announcement of a full expansion (paid or otherwise, I don’t care), that included:
20 new maps/zones
1 new class
1 new race
1 new weapon per class
5+ new utilities per class
1 new WvWvW map (minimum – 5 would be great)And I want it out by Christmas.
I’ve already uninstalled the game from my computer.
This would be the bare minimum needed to bring me back.
Bye~
Pretty obvious they’re not crying over a lost qqlayer or two.
Still, not leaving, but making alts is probably not going to happen. Another “test case” just like I did a few months ago, but otherwise, eh.
Seriously… I’m 47, I run my own business, and I DO NOT NEED SPOON FEEDING, DIAPERING OR SOFT FOODS.
Give it another 20 years~
Beyond extremes of easy or hard, I couldn’t give a whit about it.
What I want is a smooth, fun leveling experience that gives me options to explore.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Character This does not look smooth to me.
And is it me, or is banking actually locked behind level 23? …Y’know, completely out of reach of all those Experience Scrolls I’ll be itching to use to get past this slough?
That’s actually the change that has bothered me the most so far. The main number that I’m concerned with (the listing value) is now small and pushed up into the corner. The sell buttons are shorter now, making them harder to click when I’m hastily trying to sell things. Having two “close window” buttons also threw me off, because most of the time I just clicked the close one, which just closed the pop-over and not the window.
These are all minor issues that I’m sure I can get used to, but they could be better.
