[Suggestions] Gemstore Items

Ooohhhh one more item request in the Gem Store!

A violin

A really tiny one you can use while being sarcastic during RPing?

Heck I would consider paying for a broad range of emotes that are missing from this game that most have. Such as an emote for playing the world’s tiniest violin (but that’s finger animation and we don’t have that). But we could have eyeroll, wink, slackjaw, grimace because of the eyes and teeth we have (you can see them if you zoom through your head by backing into a wall).

I mean, how can you not have clap?

I was hoping someone would bring this up. Another game had quests for dances.
Yes, quests. For dances. The staggering lack of emotes is minor nuisance, but I’d have hoped they’d correct it by now.

On Mounts & Housing.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Sure, why not.
But

1) you have to buy or capture it.

2) feed and water daily. You can either gather these yourself or buy from the trading post. If you miss 1 day the mount becomes weak and you don’t have a speed buff. 2 days and you can’t ride it for another 2 days while it recovers. 3 days and when you log on it’s dead and you have to buy another.

3) shelter. When not used it need to be in a pen with a building. If you don’t shelter it, it’s weak. Shelter has a weekly fee.

4) vet care. At least once a month you need to pay a veterinarian NPC. He will also charge various random fees for vaccinations, deworming, foot care and illnesses. If you don’t use the vet NPC, your pet will become weak.

5) gear. You will need to buy gear. Saddle, bridle, shoes, etc. Gear wears out after a set number of hours and will need to be rebought.

6) after a period of time, your mount will get old, weak and then sick. You will then need to pay for the vet NPC to put it down.

If you really want mounts, you should be prepared to care for them.

While some of the above is obviously bitter…

The rest is kinda fantastic!

There could be a mount capture quest in every zone to get players out on maps.
Shelter fees for a gold sink. (Health care included.)
A separate gold sink (with gem store permanent) item to give a short speed buff and summon the mount.

Or something like that. Also thoughts about a vendor/stable near the most used waypoints (zone transition spots and nearest-uncontested for common events) to pick them up and use them in that zone. Those stables aren’t present in cities, because no one wants dolyak kitten on the street.

Mods should have an automerge/auto delete function to get rid ANY post that asks for mounts and/or housing. Come on OP there are a ton of threads covering this—-no need to make any NEW posts regarding mounts/housing. (and I bet you know it! So another name comes to mind).

Devs should add a proper search function to the forums so people can search for mount and guild hall threads. …The ones that haven’t been closed for toxic players being uncivil or necro’d from the deep dark, anyway.

Not to mention, some Google Analytics could make collecting feedback much easier. Buuut that’s a little off topic for this thread.

On Mounts & Housing.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I’ll sum up the constant, constant arguments:

- Housing -
Some do for the sake of privacy and community, and to put the “guild” back in Guild Wars 2.
Some don’t because it’s “pointless” and “vain” and isn’t “content”.

- Mounts -
Them: NO NO NO NO
Other Them: But they’d be coooool~
Them: NONONONO
Other Them: But gold sinks and style and
Them: CLUTTER NONONONOOO

…but to do it more justice, actually:

Nay:
It’s a vanity resource, waypoints are superior to mounts in most cases, and it may pull resources away from building content. Some feel it is inappropriate to lore and theme (the “not WoW” argument) as they may be ridiculous or be used to bother players and block NPCs. Also, status quo also runs in this direction, so we might not see them in development.
If mounts come with speed, all the classes would have to be redesigned, and ANet will have to decide how to distribute for balance and power (gems only, WvW yes/no, etc).

Yea:
Mounts are cool, handy to get around sprawling maps with locked waypoints, and can generate both revenue and gold sinks into the game.

Lots of good Nay reasons, not so many Yea reasons, and the Yea doesn’t really tackle the humongous effort it would take to introduce them properly.

I think if he’s going to die, it has to involve some surprising character twist. It also has to be completely believable – not some forced twist, such as him just happening to “get corrupted.” Getting “corrupted” (in some magical-ish way) seems to be Anet’s one way to have a character change sides.

I would love to see characters turning against each other because of conflicting goals and motivations, and because of questionable morals.

Already, I’ve seen too much of this, “We hate each other for some reason.”

It does seem anti-intuitive to think that buy low, sell high “lowers” prices, but I do see the point about equilibrium.

Buying out the low material to sell it for a higher price means that there is room again for new materials to enter the market at higher prices as well, via undercutting. This gives producers (material farmers, etc) actual value for what they enter into the market.

The raise in price also helps siphon gold out of the economy to keep it more stable. TP flippers have to suck up a huge fee just to buy, list, and earn on their investments. If it’s not at least a 30% increase, it’s probably not worth doing at all. Which means they have to invest in highly volatile materials.
…and my brain went from gold sinks to farming guiding gameplay and..

Yeah, it’s a complex topic, one that the game’s economist has a pretty firm grasp of.

[Suggestion] The Right Time for Mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I’ll ignore your patronizing tone , in the interest of discussing.

Like it or GTFO isn’t patronizing? Confirmation Bias runs rampant in this thread. -_-

Not to get off track, let’s just look at all the ways people try to get around after they’ve made that nearest waypoint jump.

Shortbow 5, for as long as initiative holds out. I guess that’s as good as swiftness.
Various Warhorn skills of differing effectiveness and cooldown. Woe if you’re a Necromancer and a non-critter killable happens to be nearby.
Staff. Get either one small stack of swiftness on a longer cooldown, or sit on it for a few seconds to get 10-12 seconds of it.
Swap kits around constantly.

People are willing to do some crazy mess just to get to an event faster. And even then, it’s not consistent between classes. Would it not make sense to stabilize gameplay by providing a more reasonable option for traveling? And by travel, I mean noncombat. There is no need to make noncombat travel such a pain in the kitten.

That is a quality of life improvement worth investigating. (Since that obviously didn’t get read the first time.) There would be tons of balance issues to sort out, especially for WvW and PvP, where travel time is a huge factor. For open-world PvE? The assertion of noncombat balance in PvE borders on pitiable.
What balance is there in forcing my Mesmer to suffer a non-optimal travel speed, falling behind my Warrior ally before Golem Mk II gets mushed by the zerg?

[Suggestion] The Right Time for Mounts

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

make a compelling argument for why Mounts are beneficial to the game…

Money. That’s a compelling enough reason for ANet to do it. To invest (time and money) in development. If they expect a large enough return on cosmetic mounts they’ll do it.
It doesn’t have to be compelling for you, but for ANet.

…that doesn’t even seem to read these forums anyway. So joke’s on us. Haw. But seriously, if enough people pull a “shut up and take my money” about it, they’ll do it. Whatevs. I’m going to Schrodinger’s cat this thing and both care and not care until it actually happens or not happens.

As for “play the game as it is”, I generally do. That doesn’t mean the game can’t be better, which is what I push for. Which is why games change and innovate. “Play it as it is” is a push for stagnation and, ultimately, game death. (Unless they can crank out some really good story, which would be compelling enough to come back for, even with boringly unchanged characters.)

Game design has unintended consequences all the time. That’s why they get patched and improved. Usually. The Trait debacle is bad and they should feel bad. So yes, things get balanced, then rebalanced, then rebalanced again. Trait, skills, and gear change over time, then are removed for replacements. It’s already happened a few times.

Being “forced” into travel-boosting builds and gear loadouts is not an example of “build diversity.” It’s a limp-wristed compromise to something that players should have a more generalized access. While I’m not advocating mounts and the fuss of huge NPC-blocking mammoths kitten WoW) for the sake of decoration, it’s about time that ANet sincerely investigates the benefit of balancing for travel.

The key word being investigate. That will mean analyzing what will happen to some skills, like speed signets and the prevalence of some swiftness buffs (which is arguably the weakest buff in the game anyway…), but balancing can be done. Afterward, skill slots and trait points get freed up for things people actually want to do, instead of building just to be rid of a nuisance.

Because compromising my build to include perma 25% run speed is stupid.

Because paying through the nose for Traveler’s Runes, which provide little benefit other than perma 25% run speed, is stupid.

Because sacrificing a slot on my skill bar for perma 25% run speed is stupid.

This isn’t about having more maneuverability. People are doing this to move around faster.

For as much as this led to my banner warrior, that’s exactly it. Traveling speed (not movement in combat) was the entire reason I built the character that way. Maximized boon duration, picked traits for warhorn cooldowns, so I could be perma-swift, then dug into Discipline for the melee-move +25%. And there are still characters that don’t get that option. It’s pretty slack.
I probably would have built him completely differently if I had some kind of generic elite Traveling Signet or utility skill that I could swap around. I’m not advocating mounts, necessarily, but at least a lore-appropriate way to equalize traveling speed for out of combat.

Sure the scrolls could be better, but they do have uses to some players.

Yup, totally. Because the 12+ I got a year ago were going to waste, otherwise. And I really don’t think I’m going to start 12 more characters with the current kitteny trait system. I (re)made one, just to give it a fair shake. Sadly, it failed to exceed my forgivingly low expectations.

Here’s to hoping for something more interesting, though I have to admit the 24-hour birthday boost is welcome to come back. Just leave Jennah at home.

Nobody running keys does it ONE time, either.

The scrolls are for new characters (and thus promotes new character slot sales). This is also why they only add levels up to 20 and not just add 20 levels to any character.

Nobody? Just proved that wrong. lol huehuehue XD

And new characters? Who’s making new characters these days that has also been playing the game for more than a year? The new trait system is an utter hindrance, and the general pulse of things is that it’s no longer worth it to make new ones. I’m certainly not (except for key runs =P and those don’t count). Not to say nobody is, but I have to wonder how much NA/EU new character slot sales have dropped.

Maybe if they remade the scrolls to get to 36 instead of 20. Or 60. I’d make a new character if I could bounce to 60 instantly. Maybe. Either way, Experience Scroll is really, really lackluster now.

Outfits do have some benefits, the best of which is they’re easy. Easy to make, easy to equip. I’ve been using them for my alts on their road to 80, because I don’t want to bother with fussing with mix’n’match stuff. Then at 80, the actual fun begins. …much like the rest of the game.

Still, a good question, why didn’t they ‘outfit’ the town clothes and other tonic clothing?

I’d had an earlier thought of having a Town Clothes set of tabs, just to bring it back and mimic it after the existing wardrobe, since the concept is already in practice. It’d be a fair amount of extra code and testing, of course.

Still, I think a town clothes outfit would do wonders for those who like to RP and miss having their town clothes available. Same for those who invested in khakis, et al, and got tonics for those too. It would open up a continuing market for casual wear outfits, parallel to the adventuring ones.

See, the ability to CONTROL the supply kind of makes it NOT like commodities at all (and anyone that believes Anet is NOT in 100% control of this is delusional). I have no problem with how it works, but I am a bit “concerned” that players being led to believe gems are a fixed quantity commodity when they are not is something the SEC might raise an eyebrow to if it were in fact a REAL market.

I’m pretty sure the supply for gems is based on legit transactions and not fluffing of numbers by ANet. Might they occasionally tip a few extra gems into the market? Possible, but I’ll stay away from conspiracy theories.

Thing is, some people will use gems to buy gold, especially if the price goes up significantly. That brings more supply and lowers the price. But the price keeps climbing since many more people are likely to trade gold for gems.

With a large enough pool (say, in the millions), it would take a long time for the difference in buyer rates and seller additions to leech the gem pool enough to run it out completely.

Which leads to an interesting (though likely policy-disallowed) question: How many gems did the BLTC start with? Millions? A billion? I’m totally curious.

[Suggestion] The Right Time for Mounts

I just wanted to voice my support for mounts.

50,000 gems in the gem store, cosmetic only, cannot use in cities/dungeons/wvw/pvp.

All signets/boons/anything that applies swiftness does not apply to someone who is mounted – so anyone with swiftness will leave those mounted in the dust.

And of course combat dismounts you.

No to mounts -sorry not needed in game. It already chugs to a halt in WvW when a huge zerg runs by. Just think what it would be like with the zerg on mounts?

NO.

Actually specified not in WvW, but a roaming PvE zerg has the same concern. When there are 50-70 people gangpounding a boss as is, the same thing with people waiting for the boss is just something I don’t think ANet tech can handle.

Anet Needs someone to Talk to the Forums

John Smith in the Black Lion section is doing an excellent job, by the way. He’s giving insight to the economics of the game, and players are engaging.

It’s fantastic to see that after epic-fail silence from 99% of the forums.

What’s more, instead of offering platitudes and vagueries, he’ll actually go up to the limit that policy allows him to talk about, barring non-disclosure information, of course.

That is the kind of thing we’d like to see. Even a simple “we’re working on something we can’t disclose” would send relief through many who are just waiting on some kind of response. As for the rest of them, foo on ‘em. They’ll complain about anything, anyway, so it’s in the game’s best interest to ignore the more selfish of their responses. Shake it off, as it were. =P

Game Updates: Traits

Warband Wednesday update.
Still not out of Lornar’s Pass, to get my friend’s trait. Closing in on 100% completion, though. Still think any 100% completion is a bad idea. Still waiting for level 60 to actually have something resembling a build, and still bored of it.

Though, accidentally running into the dwarven artifact event thread proved fruitful. Got event credit for dailies, champ kill, and a trait skill I wasn’t planning on. Serendipitous. Using that one for now, since my other trait lines are empty and sad.

WvW for map completion is just pure griefing.

Lets [sic] remove wvw map completion[…]

[Hop] into wvw, check if your world owns a structure you need to poi/vista in, take it, and go do whatever you want to do instead. Rinse and repeat and cross your fingers for another colour next reset.

Pretty much what I had to do. It sucks, but I managed to do a quick red-blitz and finish out the last 6 or so I needed. If you care enough, you check WvW often. Or run around with a friend, that was almost fun. =P

I honestly wouldn’t mind the WvW requirement if they could balance the teams better and give the servers a better color rotation. Which actually seems at odds, considering color is based on performance. That’s kinda dumb, in my opinion, but it’s an automated measure to assume things go smoothly. And I haven’t checked much since the “activity level” change, so maybe it’s gotten better?

Rytlock Ritual End Fight

in Living World

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Again, it’s not about difficulty… it’s about whether the fight is enjoyable. For some people, difficult is enjoyable. For some, a fight is enjoyable if it feels difficult (even though it isn’t that hard). For some, a fight is enjoyable if it’s a relaxing breeze.

But none of these have to do with the enjoyability of a fight’s mechanics. A dev can write in code that spawns a bubble and you have to get into that bubble within 5 seconds or you die. Or a dev can code the same bubble and give you 2 minutes to get inside it or you die. Huge difference in difficulty, but the mechanic is the same – and it’s a potentially annoying mechanic, or an enjoyable one that requires some skill, depending on how you look at it.

This ego-stroking “this isn’t hard” prattle doesn’t serve any purpose other than satisfying the person who says it. Nor do proclamations of a fight being “hard” with little explanation as to why – and I’ve seen both in this thread.

There is nothing productive to be gained from taking a potentially complex topic on the design of a fight and simplifying it into a kittening match about its apparent difficulty level.

Kittens, man… kittens everywhere.

+1 to you.

Overall, the fight wasn’t that bad, and the mechanics were mostly spelled out. Conveyance, as they say, was right on.

To say I liked the fight might be a little much, since it still runs into the problem of too frequently using hard CC. But, that’s also a first-run, know-when-to-dodge thing, so I don’t spite it. I just hate having nothing else to do than stare at my keyboard for 3-5 seconds after a knockdown/fear. Eh, /shrug.

Still, I managed to coast the fight reasonably well, so I’d call it a mild design success.

There are just as many who do not want to hear anything positive about the game. When people mention something positive they are attacked just as much. So you have people on both sides of that spectrum.

Oh yeah.. Don’t dare say something positive or beneficial around here. You’ll get labeled as a “white knight” or “carebear”.

Because not every profession gets a speed boost or motility buff, and they are in fact designed to NOT have them.

But is that a good design decision? It’s obviously not a PvE balancing issue, since there’s no reason not to give everyone a traveling skill.

So if it’s a PvP/WvW issue, work around those parameters and be done with it.

No. Its a skin which shows that you played Halloween 2012.

Fine, keep the boring dry grey one. Because no one cares if anyone played however long ago. I want a sweet wizard hat with dye channels, dangit!
And maybe some extra frills or filigree or something.

Bottom line: If you have something helpful or constructive to say, by all means say it. If not, find somewhere else to be discordant.

This. And we don’t need a parable about complaining about complainers to express that. Comes off a bit trite instead of to the point. =P

Complaining only gets so far. After that, either give it up, or present useful ideas and solutions.
