I have a healing warrior that goes back and forth between healing banners and healing shouts depending on the content I’m doing. Healing banners is frankly OP in PvE stuff and healing shouts is a great boon to groups in WvW. just my quick 2 cents.

High-five, Pookie!

I originally went banner-heals to raise my swiftness buff uptime, but I found healing banners was a solid way to keep a regular dungeon team upright while putting out damage buffs. And for those big boss situations, shouts help there too.

AFK Players: Identifying Them More Easily?

To be honest the one’s that bother me are not random dead AFKers scattered around the world but rather those who die, not just downed but actually dead, in an event which is taking place adjacent to an open waypoint. It would take less time to just WP and rejoin the fight than for someone to rez them, but instead they just lie there not contributing to the event.

Sorry about the tangent.

Yeah, I hate to be the “WP & stop taking up space” guy, but I understand where the sentiment comes from, and if I actually drop in a fight, I’ll take a waypoint.

My best success in being a ‘healer’ comes from staff Elementalist. They’re particularly easy to spec for it, and their water skills always have at least one heal on them, and they’re really good for condition cleansing.
I also have a mace/shield Guardian that’s done pretty well on the front lines. Not quite power healing, but he can throw enough Protection and regen around to add survivability to those around him.

At end-game, look for sigils and runes that will help with healing power, as they’ll be utterly cheap on the trading post. …Mostly because healing is undervalued due to the nature of most of the content.

I’d still take ya, though. It’s less rare in GW2, but I’ve been in situations in the zerg where I get chunked in half, and within two seconds, I’m full again. As melee, it’s often appreciated. Just remember to find a good way to do damage, as that will always be necessary.

Precursors selling for 65 Gold on TP!

in Black Lion Trading Co

Rauderi.8706

How about looking at it from a top down perspective.

Anet has a concept of how many hours of gameplay they think a legendary should generally require. In pre-launch interviews I recall that number being 6-12 months so mostly casual, but focused, gameplay. Is this accurate? I think so. If you only play one or two hours per day but make sure you use your time efficiently it shouldn’t take more than a year to make Twilight. So the system as it exists now is working as intended. if you think 6-12 months of casual gameplay is too long for a legendary that is a personal issue.

I’m not against some other alternative system of precursor acquisition, for what its worth, so long as the hours to obtain it roughly equals the hours to farm the gold to buy the median price precursor outright.

Pretty much this. As it is, every current acquisition method is pure gambling. No one’s debating supply and demand, and (almost) no one is calling for a Happy Birthday Here’s a Precursor Day. People are willing to work for it, but there needs to be actual progression. Chasing a steadily increasing gold amount isn’t progression.

Given everything else that’s required for a Legendary, the precursor shouldn’t be the randomly-assigned gate to its development. Heck, make the scavenger-hunt/crafted/etc precursor account bound, so it can’t be sold on the market. Tie the recipe to finishing Living Story, just to make it take time to get. It’s not about people being “lazy” or “dumb,” it’s about a poor reward scheme that doesn’t do this game any favors.

I’m gonna be a kitten about this one. Because schadenfreude.

I rez because I want to help out. I don’t expect a “ty”, but it’d be nice. But then, sometimes, if I suspect someone’s AFkittenep an eye on ’em. Usually to see if they get eaten again. Especially on Daily Reviver days. Heh.

AFK flags might be more useful in situations where there is an event going on, especially a big one like Tequatl, so the system could move them somewhere outside the event space and to somewhere safe. AFK-upscaling isn’t usually such an issue, but some events are utterly impossible when it does happen.

Not saying it’s a good idea, just highlighting the issue.

Okay, Tassi is officially off my list of “smart” people.

I’m in a dangerous, time-sensitive situation. She wastes time with prattle instead of doing her job. If her job were executed flawlessly, then I could forgive the wind-up time.

But no, for some reason, she wants to goo me with the candy corn. …Not Prince Thorn.
As melee, if I’m not right on top of him when she finally gets around to spewing the goo, I’m stuck (pun intended?) waiting for her, while Thorn does all his stuff at range. I could LOS him so he has to move, but by the time he catches on, the goo spot’s gone.

Does this fight work differently at range, or am I kidding myself in believing that AI are ever supposed to be, y’know, helpful? :\

Top 10 MMOs by Worldwide Revenue for 2014 YTD

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

How are half of these games considered MMOs? Isn’t one of the pilars of MMOs an always online consistent world? How do card games and MOBAs have that? Or is any multiplayer game an MMO nowadays?

On GW2 in specific, they will have more income once they restore some of the goodwill they lost from some of their customers.

MMO just means many players can play together at once. Many can be a pretty small number, persistent world is a different thing.

MMORPG is a bit more specific. I would say some of the games stretch the even the loose definition though.

I’m gonna call shenanigans on that list. MOBA isn’t _M_MO, wherein the first M is “Massively”. 10 people on a map isn’t a high population. It may have a lot of players, but the concurrence just isn’t there. So that makes it a “multiplayer, online” game. Yeah, I know it’s totally semantics.

Not to be obtuse to the actual point, though, if GW2 weren’t making mistake after mistake, it could still be on this top-10 list. And that’s just sad. :\

Therefore, it is the duty of the benevolent Rich to expose their Flawed logic. An Unpleasant task, perhaps, but those who have succeeded— through Skill, Cunning, and Superiority of Birth— to amass significant amounts of pixelated Wealth should view the Education of their lesser brethren not as a Burden, but rather as their God-Given Responsibility.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rauderi.8706

Rauderi.8706

I don’t really think there’re any other options aside from tokens or “progressive RNG”.

I think that combining both depending on the situation would be best:

  • For major world boss (Tequatl, Wurm) rewards, tokens make most sense. Like, you can get lucky and receive Tequatl’s hoard on the 1s-5th-Nth run straight away, but if you grind, say, 50 Tequatl kills, you get enough tokens for a weapon anyway.
    • Tokens are received in a fixed (or very low-RNG) manner, like 10 (or 7-13 tokens) per completion, and deposited to account wallet (as it is not a temporary LS currency).
    • Direct drop rates are adjusted accordingly to maintain the average current distribution.
    • This achieves balance between the thrill of winning the jackpot and the frustration of being on the bad side of statistically even distribution.

Personally, I would prefer an achievement system here? Kill teq 50 times and get your choice of weapon. Pretty much for the reasons you state though. I guess I’m just biased against creating another currency.

  • The same goes for things like Fractal weapons and tonics. If there’s a serious reason not to use current fractal relics as the currency, an alternative weapon token system can be used.

I agree on Fractals, even though it means that after a certain amount of time you will have everything. Actually I very much agree with the rest of your points. As a rule of thumb, the more rare an item is the less it should rely on RNG.

An achievement system would feel better, in a sense. Less otherwise-useless tokens flopping about, and you can still track your progress. And achievements can be repeatable, akin to Agent of Entropy, except instead of 2AP, you get a guaranteed loot box.
It still allows for RNG drops as usual, but getting the achievement loot box would be a certainty.

What with those knockbacks?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

September Release brought with it this new NPC and mini-“event” in starting zones, where players are supposed to learn dodge-rolls. There are AoE-knockback-circles and a chest in the middle. And an NPC next to it explaining what to do. And a popup-text in the upper left corner of the screen explaining what to do, too.

Do yourself a favour and position yourself next to one of these spots and wait and watch. I once did. There were players (downscaled and in guilds, so they might not be all that new to the game) who ran in and were bumped back 5, 8, 10 times in a row without even considering what might be the cause. I first thought that they were on auto-run, but they really attempted this chest from different angles, completely ignoring the main reason for this event to even exist.

I do it because it’s fun to get batted around like a ragdoll.
Also, dodgerolling tangential to the chest is an easy daily when it comes up.

Longbow 4 is probably the main reason “bearbow” gets so much hate.
I’ve also had to “Dude, c’mon…” to my Engi buddy as we’ve been running around when I swap to greatsword for my ranger. He’s since learned to apologize for it, so.. progress!

Really though, kids, knockback should be a last resort in most group situations, or if your party is heavily ranged, like my ranger/engi duo team. And if you’re a longbow ranger, use #3’s stealth and wait a few seconds to get the heat off, if your dodge is charging. Pet/someone else should pull aggro somewhere in the 2-3 second mark, and you’re clear to 2/1/1/1/1/1 after that.

Lets talk about the new Gem conversion [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

After the 400-gem minimum, the part I find most irritating is the gold amounts are static, leaving the gem amounts to fluctuate.

Ahem
That’s not how we spend our gems, people!

It should be easier to spend gems, not harder or more obnoxious. Case in point:
I buy 800 gems. (Past tense, already bought, quite a few times.)
Pick up the 700 gem nifty of the biweekly period.
Sit on the remaining 100 for the next run -OR- Sell that 100 on the gem market for a nifty gold boost.

When it comes to gems→gold, I don’t think most people are trying to get a specific amount of gold, and if they are, there should be a system for on the UI.

=Gold Section=
“I want to buy [amount] gold” and it tells how many gems are needed.
“I want to sell [amount] gems” and it tells how much gold you get back.

…it’s not that hard. :\

I miss being all ballcap hipster with my jaunty GW2 hat. It was a symbol of my dedication to the game and would have stood as a beacon to my two years invested. I started using that in LFG as an indicator. “Ballcaps only” runs. I needed to make sure I was only with experienced players. Took an hour to fill, but I got quality.

The idea behind the change is great, but they should have either had lower increments or allowed custom values.

Pretty much this. I’m not much of a gem speculator, so I don’t need the value graph, but it’s downright insulting that the minimum buy is 400 gems, and the minimum sale is dependent on the gem market value.

On a very basic level, the format is good. The options are not.

If it was a move to combat the steady rise in gem prices, then it should have been harder to buy them, but easy to sell them. Especially since the Buy Gold section looks ripe for rounding error and cheating people out of silver they should be getting for odd values in gems.

If they want to have pre-defined rates, it should be more akin to

Buy Gold section
Shows what each rate of gems is worth, specifically. Denominations to avoid offset numbers, like having only 30 gems left. People will ditch leftover gems for gold, helping to maintain the value of gems.
Example:
[Sell 800 gems] = 75g 6s
[Sell 100 gems] = 9g kitten
[Sell 10 gems] = kitten 50c
[Sell 1 gem] = 4s 55c
[Custom Offer] = Trade Value

Buy Gems section
[Buy 800 gems] = 98g 28s
[Buy 400 gems] = 49g 14s
[Buy 200 gems] = 24g 57s
[Buy 100 gems] = 12g 28s 50c

While I personally liked the ability to buy gems in small packages (as I did when I first started out, trying to earn extra character slots that way), I can see the value in having a gate point on buying gems with gold. I don’t particularly like it, but I can consider compromises, like a minimum gem order of 200 or 100.

As far as I’m concerned, do what you want with RNG. It doesn’t appear to matter. Make everything a lottery. People do not want skill based rewards. They just want to know they have a chance to win.

Ugh. The skritt lottery is even worse than the other RNG in this game. Usually, you get something, even if it’s not useful or what you want. This lottery is random and hidden, which just rankles me even more.

But if you play certain dungeon enough times, and gather enough of tokens/relics, you can just get it off of vendor, for 10000, 100000, 100000000000 tokens or whatever.

This sounds way too grindy. No one enjoys playing a dungeon that often.

Repetition isn’t fun if the content is always the same. Some random events (which aren’t very common in GW2’s dungeons) won’t make a dungeon indefinitely replayable.

Corollary: Use random events to give steady rewards.
And I don’t mean fractals. Those are set events in a random order.

If the content is engaging enough, the rewards matter less. Though, we should still have a way to get better rewards.

As a lot of people stated, RNG is fine for things that occur regularly. Someone even detailed when it is/is not okay to have it, based on regularity and trade status. Uncommon but sellable (foxfire clusters) isn’t so terrible, incredibly rare and sellable (precursors) leads to a submarket driven by gold grind, and incredibly rare and soulbound is just unforgivable.

But we have lots of tools on how we can introduce loot/rewards. Drops, daily chests, token rewards, salvaging, crafting, search/skill content, etc. Maudry’s a step in the right direction, at least. A little overpainful, but at least it’s a plausible goal for those who want it. (I just need to run some fractals. Grr. :P)

I’m not exactly a fan of the minority kick feature, either. Then again, I’ve never been fond of in-game tools that have the potential to be used for griefing — especially in the name of convenience. I’d rather be inconvenienced myself so that someone else’s experience isn’t ruined — but I recognize I can’t make that decision for everyone.

I’ll be honest, I’d go back to LFG if it were majority kickvote, like it’s supposed to be. The odds of getting three coordinated trolls is a lot lower. Giving a player power over another player’s experience in an online game is never a good thing. Sometimes it’s unavoidable, but LFG party creation is not one of those times.

So.. why is a pair of people allowed to have control over my experience? It’s not even majority rule. In order to protect myself, I have to find four people I trust to prevent a group hijacking.

And “guild up”? Yeah, I’m still working on that. It’s not so easy to find a dungeon guild that isn’t zerkspeedrunlol.

Party Leader Authority

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I can agree with making the LFG creator the Party Leader. That leader has full control over kicks as necessary, and if other people don’t like him, they vote with their feet. The party leader had the initiative to create the group and take the risk, he deserves a reasonable insurance against a crappy group.

Conversely, there needs to be insurance against tyranny. So, as a part of the full disclosure nature of the group (already in the LFG description text), I’d recommend an actual Reputation score of some kind. …Scores are too simple. Summing that kind of behavior into one number doesn’t quite work. Instead:

Percent/number of initiated vote-kicks. (Requiring 3+ vote)
Percent/number of kick overrides. (Leader has overall authority on group comp.)
Percent/number of completed leader runs.
Recommending Players (Once per player, can be rescinded in future groups)

The “number” portion tells general experience with dungeon leading runs. The “percent” part is the warning flag of how much of a kittenface he is.

The point being that if there’s a party leader with authority, his performance will show whether he can be trusted.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

The game already has plenty of ‘tokens’ – they’re called crafting materials.

The crafting system doesn’t take full advantage of this and has some clear holes that stymie progress – but the token system is already very clearly in place.

I’ve always liked the idea of crafting being more useful, but there have been some quirks in execution that can be frustrating, even then:

Soldier/Dire/etc gear. Need the gear to the dowels to make the gear. This has yet to be fixed.
Celestial gear. Need a recipe that follows every other “discovery” path to make each piece. The inconsistency is bonus.
Ascended Gear. Silk. Enough said.
The introduction of Foxfire Clusters sank Elder Wood.
Time gating. Bad.

So yeah, the above examples make me worry that using crafting or crafting materials in new ways isn’t going to play out in a way that feels rewarding.

- -

Unrelated to the above, I’m sensing there’s some confusion on how a token system would work. The goal is to offset “misses” or “losses” on loot rolls with something that indicates progress toward the desired reward. This does not exclude other players getting that “lucky drop” and getting the reward early.

If there’s a concern about farming, then the tokens can be given once per day, which also makes for a convenient time-gate on how soon the reward should be avialable. Get 100 tokens, you’ve waited a sufficiently long enough time that you deserve something for the time invested.

- -

Additionally unrelated, I’m curious to see where the idea for PvE reward tracks might go.

Ya know, I was thinking about this a bit and keep coming back to the same spot. I (and others) get out the torches and Storm the Castle shouting “They owe us < Insert here > because…” and I kinda get stuck. Then I noticed "What was the Quid Pro Quo? Uh… I give you $60 for a couple of gig of binaries and game server access. “But but I have an emotional investment in this!” Well, that’s on me. Yeah, they could do better than have two random devs kinda smirk and say SAB is on the shelf via some weird web interview. As an aside, that was a really really bad way to let that news out and I don’t even like SAB. But, life is hard, wear a helmet.

[…]

So, it’s settled: What we’ve got is what we have. Smile and be as happy as you can.

Simple point, ANet wouldn’t have to hide in shadows if people could be civil. There’s even posts in the sticky about how to be heard by the dev team. They amount to:

Don’t be a [bad word normally filtered by “kitten”].

And I kinda like “Smile and be as happy as you can.” That’s a good way to be.

I’m glad to hear that the “We’re aware of _ and working on it” seems doable to y’all.

The issue on communication, however, is broader than this. As far as long-term things are concerned (full-on expansions, additions of new classes/weapons, etc.) I think the present approach has been totally understandable. You all are the devs. You’ve got the leeway to withhold preliminary info on new content.

In this realm, the best kind of communication would be a decent breakdown of project priority. Even knowing as little as

“Our dev priority is…
1. Guild Halls
2. WvW class balance
3. Necro Re-work
4. etc.”

would go a long way to balancing expectations in the forums. When everyone hears “We’re aware of and working on _,” without some sort of prioritization associated with it, everyone ends up thinking their pet peeve is the number-one priority.

I would love to see something like this. Nothing specific, but just knowing where dev resources are going would be great for the community. (The nay-sayers will fuss and complain anyway, so K them.) It doesn’t even have to be everything. Though, wouldn’t it be amusing to see this project list:

Development projects:

  • New-New Trait System
  • Guild Halls
  • Condition damage brainstorming, CDI pending
  • Something special secret~

The buzz generates itself.

Random thought. Elder wood is at a pretty slumped low right now, because of Foxfire Clusters. Once the Maudry II rush (is it really a rush? <_<) is over and the farming eases off, it might climb in price.

It’s also possible that they might introduce something to offset the Elder Wood generation at a later date, which would make the price climb again.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Right now, Anet is kittening on the player base. Has been since April.

I want only to know the answer to ONE question:

Why on earth did they think that limiting trait acquisition would allow for improved build experimentation?

Certainly a dissonance between ideology and behavior, yeah?

So, I’m at the Master point with my ranger, 2 levels shy of 80. There’s some traits I want to get at, but they’re:

  • locked behind level 70 story.
  • locked behind a dungeon.

The story I’ll eventually get to. It’s bad design, but little trouble in the end.

The dungeon? A friggin’ mess. My options are to pester a guild to run/carry an underleveled (read as “non-80 exotic+ geared”) character, LFG, or buy the trait.

So, for the guild, one guild I’m in is a tad… busy. They might run dungeons, but overall, my times don’t mesh their times.
Soooo.. I had to go farming for guilds on the forums. Moderate success, perhaps, and at least the tools to find a guild were there. ( Thanks to everyone who contacted me. I was quite surprised, by the way. )
Still, this requires pestering someone. Bad design and highly inconvenient for someone with time limits.

LFG? Not while the 2-person vote-kick exists. I mean, seriously, ANet? But, if that’s changed in the past while, correct me for working on outdated info, so I can LFG with more confidence. But GW2-LFG is racing FF14’s dungeon community to the bottom right now. :\

Which means I’m probably going to waste time and money to buy at least one trait for the build I’m working on. And it’s just for that build, which is starting to wane in effectiveness due to what seems to be internal cooldowns on spirits.

tl;dr – Trait system still isn’t fun.

Megaservers and RP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I used to think doing a roleplay would be fun, and have done so in one group, only to find out light ERP was involved. Also found out by word of mouth a lot of rpg groups are ERP. Needless to say I don’t roleplay online any longer… just happy to explore, do dungeons, world bosses and level. To be honest, going to Rata Sum and Black Citadel sickens me from hearing suggestive content being /me ‘stated’ or ‘emoted’. I avoid those areas now. I wish there was a way to remove such activity altogether.

Yeeeah. There’s some of this. Depending on what shard I get shunted to, my time in Rata Sum or Black Citadel gets really uncomfortable. Thank Six for blocking user emotes, as that was long overdue.

It’s nominally less awkward when I see RP coming out of non-lore-appropriate names. Like, why bother? >_>

And that’s really sad to me, because elsewhere, I’m a very active RPer (running a game tonight, even :P), but all I find because of Megaserver is awkward conversations where I need an adult, or a jug of chloroform.

Gems? Then you can use the gems to buy the Living Story chapters you miss.

Really though, I’ve seen gems do nothing but climb steady over time.
T6 materials are generally fairly stable, and if any shift comes in precursor acquisition, those will climb until the market corrects.

Consider, though, that any investment you make with gold and turn around to re-liquefy will be subject to some kind of 15% surcharge, so you’d actually lose gold in the long run, unless you’re counting on the investment to grow considerably in the time you’re gone.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

I’m seeing concerns with a token system, specifically related to farming:

How much is too much, or too little? Basically, how much time or how many runs should a person be expected to go through before the system pays out?

More importantly, what happens after the player gets what s/he wants? The tokens would become meaningless, unless there were secondary rewards that could also be purchased. Just about every item we receive should have multiple uses, especially if it isn’t tradeable.

There’s been some expansion on the uses for Bloodstone Dust with the toxic tools and Maudry II. Even the fossilized amber can be traded in for a loot bag. Good stuff.

On the other end, disappointingly, Mystic Coins are bordering on trash items, because their use is so limited, even though they’re technically time gated. (Tangential gripe, I can see why time-gating helps keep the market shock out of the trading post, but.. grr.. It irritates me nonetheless. I would rather have seen Mystic Coins used as a part of the recipe, if the intent was to slow high-end crafting down.)

And I rambled again. tl;dr – Token rewards would have to include a secondary reward for those who already achieved their focused goals, especially if they are not available for sale.

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that’s an occasional PvP reward. Note to self, go suck at PvP at some point.

I’d be fine with transmutation working the same as the way dyes do.

Agreed.

I’d rather pay a charge to unlock a skin that i can then transmute whenever I wanted for free.

Also a good idea. It’d be great to have an unlock for your favorite pieces. Maybe a different kind of transmutation stone as an uncommon drop from Black Lion chests.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rauderi.8706

Hiding progress behind NRNG is likely to get frustrating, unless the player specifically knows it’s there. So, in a very basic sense, I’m leaning toward #2.

But there’s a lot to consider for token-based or incremental rewards.
Are the tokens sellable (like Mystic Coins, which really need another use), or would they be account bound/wallet materials? Are the token rewards account bound (like karma gear) or sellable (like precursors)?

Do the tokens guarantee a specific reward? The idea of 250 Precursor Tokens and some other ingredients making a specific precursor has hit the table more than once. Or would the tokens allow a player to buy a specific class of item?

One of the biggest questions, how many tokens would be needed? Are they earned once per day, to avoid the effect of farming? What content has them?

But yes, lots of questions.

Beside that, though, I don’t believe that un-rewarding lucky people is necessarily the way to go. A generic flattening of the reward curve just means that everyone has everything eventually, but we need want to continue having a healthy economy. Instead, allowing positive skew by bringing negative outliers in line keeps those ‘unlucky’ people participating in the economy with an element of impatience.
(Why yes, I did buy around 50 Foxfire Clusters in the past few weeks. =P)

Which leads me to think that #2 is better overall. It shows a sense of progression, a quantifiable amount of work both done and remaining. It maintains motivation more than a hidden RNG bonus. Even Magic Find boosts feel pale in loot when we still get a legion of greys and blues and greens. And when that yellow/rare item hits, it’s not worth enough to get excited about, unless it’s salvaged, which has a gambler’s chance of being a huge disappointment. (That was the most expensive 20 silver mithril ore chunk ever.)

lt;dr – Yes to bringing the back end of the luck curve up a little with incremental/token systems, preferably kept to the wallet to avoid clutter.

And John, thank you so much for not just listening, but actively engaging this topic.
