League of Legends had 2 maps and 1 game mode for years and you don’t see anyone complaining there.
You should be playing PvP becuase you enjoy it, not because you want a number in the corner of your screen to read something high.
Glory farmers… in tournaments? What?
Anvil Rock and Anvil Rock
Certain combinations are locked because they would be game breaking and unbalanced.
Imagine an amulet with Vitality, Healing, Toughness. It would just mess up the balance of things.
^ If you miss raging from being outplayed, queue up for some paids.
No one cares if they win or lose in hotjoin because it’s a zergfest with 0 skill required.
Quickness Stomp
Stability Stomp
Knockback
Knockdown
Stun
Daze
Damage the downed enemy
Problem?
You didn’t die in 1 venom combo even without using any stun breakers.
You were hit for 19k including his rune proc and you yourself have around 27k HP. If you’re building a tanky warrior there are so many traits that you can in Defense including Last Stand and Defy Pain. Not to mention Svanir runes which prevent insta-gibs. You can also dodge/shield block, but lets assume every one of your traits and utilities are on cooldown. You still would have lived with 8k hp, I’m not seeing the issue here.
Great video that goes into detail about the problems competitive play is facing.
That 2/8 you see are the teams registered on your server, not in total.
Clever title.
It will be fixed Soon™
There’s so few high rank players that the majority of us will be locked out of 90% of PvP servers. The population can’t handle being divided into rank brackets right now.
I Find it to be a little overpowered…
Yes, it is in fact overpowered against players who have no idea what they’re doing. Try to do that in paid tournies.
Agreed, being able to stun break mid-air and not when you hit the floor is very helpful.
Now let me start off by saying that these are my own views as a player who has been playing this game competitively from launch. Currently have 60 QPs and am Rank 41 with nearly 2,000 games played.
I’ve decided to summarize the issues that I feel are very important and need to be addressed for this game to have a future as a competitive game.
• Massive gap between low and high skill players
This is caused by many factors that I’ll get into later on in this post, but this section will focus on the lack of informative resources given to new players. Things that veterans have learned in time, such as timing your burst, stun breaking, blink locations, and team strategies to name a few are completely unknown to lower skilled players.
Lets take a look at League of Legends.
-Help section specifically for experienced players to help newer ones on their forums.
-Multitude of learning resources, ranging from guides to build fansites to content put out by Riot themselves (Character overviews in the form of youtube videos)
-Extremely popular on Twitch.tv, many perspectives from high skilled players who have a wide range of playstyles.
-Player replays are especially helpful.
Guild Wars 2 currently has:
-A few experienced streamers
-Very few guides written by experienced players, many from rank 10-20s. Most are outdated.
-http://www.gw2build.com/ is a decent site for players to find builds. It’s one of the only build resources out there right now but doesn’t even compare to http://www.mobafire.com/ in terms of quality.
• Lack of competitive features
Replays: An incredibly important feature that allows teams and players rewatch their successes and failures.
Ladders: Without them there is no competition. These need to be added ASAP.
LAN/Online Tournaments: Prize rewards will spark a huge interest into the competitive side of Guild Wars 2. Outside of the massive LAN event tournaments, online tournaments can easily be implemented and give teams a goal to strive for. Things will start getting real competitive when gems, titles, and exclusive gear is involved.
Without these the competitive scene will struggle to stay alive.
• Unfriendly to new players
So put yourself in the shoes of a new player. You load up PvP, enter Heart of the Mists, and take a look around. You don’t feel like tweaking with your build/utilities just yet and want to jump straight into the action. In Hotjoin you notice everyone zergs together, no one cares about winning and they only want glory. You’re getting killed in a few seconds either a Backstab Thief or a 100b Warrior becuase you don’t know how to counter them.
After awhile you become comfortable in Hotjoin and start better understanding classes and their skills. You’re looking for something more competitive, so you first try and form a group to do a tournament with. Right off the bat you’re having issues finding a group. Heart of the Mists (if you’re not on Anvil Rock) is a wasteland and trying to form a group with people from Hotjoin is a wasted effort, so you queue solo. You’re thrown in with 4 other random players who have no organization or team composition at all and are getting stomped over and over 500-200 by organized teams.
By now you’ve realized:
1. Hotjoin is a skill-less zergfest.
2. Tournaments have poor matchmaking and are run by premade groups, which you can’t seem to get into.
^ The above scenario I believe to be very common. People leave the game because of this, never to return. If you aren’t an experienced player who has been playing from the start you’re in for a bad time. This has to be addressed somehow, or else the PvP population will continue to drop into oblivion.
Will edit this post later with more info but this is all I’ve got for now.
Theives are fine in free/paid tournies as burst spec, it’s much more common than death blossom.
Play what you want, everything is viable.
Kidding right?
What isn’t viable then?
Play what you want, everything is viable.
Great idea, I remember awhile back I was talking to some people and we basically came up with that. I think it would be nice in Free/Paid tournies since there’s much more organization and team play in them.
Hard to judge from that data because you’re drawing it from people who for the most part don’t know how to play the game.
Basic roles in 5v5:
Back point holder (Guardian, Mesmer, Elementalist, Engineer)
Middle bunker (Guardian, Engineer)
High damage (Thief, Warrior, Engineer, Necro, Ranger, Mesmer)
Tanky damage (Warrior, Necro, Elementalist)
Condition damage (Engineer, Necro)
Support (Guardian, Elementalist)
People in free tournaments don’t put much thought into their team comp and it is almost never optimal.
How you want to throw your comp together is up to you, but make sure that it’s balanced and synergizes well.

Im so tired of going into a game full of thieves and they run around stealthed so you can’t even see them and kill you in 3 hits.
>First off, don’t look to 8v8 for balance. That’s your first problem. Thieves can’t “run around stealth” they have shadow refuge which is on a minute cooldown and stealths them for 10 second among a few other skills with provide short 3 second stealths.
Its NOT fun, and it is the stupidest thing I have EVER witnessed. How is this a Balanced game. Even with 3k Armor they do on average 5k+ a hit with Backstab. I will be in middle of 2 v 1 and not doing bad and BAM, insta-death from the unseen. This is absolutely pathetic Arena Net. Bring back Pre-BWE3 Balance, atleast the game was fun in Beta. Now it is just Flavor of the Month professions using the same Backstab build. You knew about this BEFORE last patch, yet you did nothing to fix this issue. Absolutely frustrating knowing we are being ignored…
>Yeah, 1v3 is usually instant death regardless of the class you’re playing.
Edit: Sorry, I am an Elementalist, was running conditon/heal build at the time. I was doing fine versus 2 people, just keeping the point contested when I got jumped from full life to none instantly. I don’t care who you are, if you are watching 2 people and managing your heals/knockdowns/utilities, if you got smacked for over 15k in under a second, you wouldn’t be able to do anything.
>Whatever build you were running must’ve been very squishy. A thief doesn’t hit you for 9k backstabs unless you’re a glass cannon. You got “smacked for over 15k in under a second” because you had bad awareness and didn’t anticipate the thief’s burst. If you had seen it coming you could have EASILY popped mist form/earth shield after the start of his burst and healed back up. You would have died with 3 people attacking you but it wouldn’t have been a 1 second insta-kill that I always here people complaining about.
This is not a L2P issue. This is from a different match, but it pretty much sums it up… Everyone keeps saying L2P, frankly, I only have problems with Thieves and Mesmers. I can spec Glass cannon if I want, matter of fact after making this post I said screw it, I die in 3 hits, I might as well do some damage. As of right now I am running a 20 20 0 10 20 build doing 1k – 5k dmg depending on the skill used. But that is only versus other people with glass cannon. If u cant out bunker them, then try to burst them before they burst you I guess.
>This isn’t a game balanced around 1v1s. With a bunker build you won’t kill anyone (you’ll eventually win a 1v1 against a glass cannon if they’re stupid and keep fighting you) and as a burst elementalist expect to have a hard time because your class doesn’t benefit much from speccing entirely into damage.
And if you played Beta you would know what I meant by the Reverse balance. Back when Ele Fire Grab did 10k + dmg. We got nerfed almost instantly, but another class with just as much if not more survivability in glass cannon spec, doesn’t receive the nerf. At the very least, Ele’s have Cooldowns to make this kind of damage temporary… It is not spammable like initiative based attacks.
>It got nerfed instantly because it WAS OP. You’re forgetting that elementalists aren’t supposed to be played as glass cannons. You actually do have a lot of survivability and even as tanky-DPS aren’t focused first in fights. Fire grab was hitting way too high and that’s just a fact. Thieves have incredibly low survivability, they melt in team fights and can’t fight in melee range for very long before they’re focused and dead. Thieves have cooldowns too. Their burst damage is high but they rely on skills like Venoms/Steal/Haste to be able to do that burst. Much like 100b warrior, if they miss that they’ve basically lost a lot of their spike potential. Initiative on Thief is mainly used for for utility, not burst damage.
Agree with everything except comp swapping, that should only be allowed during the pregame.
I think better daily/monthly achievements would help motivate people to play tournies, maybe make a daily tourney-only achievement reward.
Daily Tournament (Free and Paid)
5 Tournament Matches played
3 Tournament Rounds won (1st, 2nd, and 3rd round count individually as 1, so 3 in total)
10 Kills in Tournaments (Don’t know if it should be higher/low since you don’t want to alienate bunkers)
5 Nodes Captured in Tournaments
Reward: 5 Tournament Tickets, 10 orbs, 1 salvage kit
Completion time is around 45-90 minutes depending on your performance.
Monthly Tournament (Free and Paid) – This one should take a long time but be rewarding
50 Tournament Matches played
30 Tournament Rounds won
100 Kills in Tournaments
50 Nodes Captured in Tournaments
Rewards: 25 Tournament tickets, 50 orbs, 20 crystals, 10 slivers, 5 repair kits
Completion time can range from 20-30 hours. This is a reward for people who play a lot of PvP, and easily obtainable for some us in the span of 1 week. Right now the PvP acheivments are too easy, the monthly can be earned in 1 or 2 hours and the daily only takes about an hour. I think it would be positive to have both tournament and regular acheivments, us PvP players really need something to play for and right now without ladders there isn’t really anything besides getting a high rank.
Why add these achievements?
1. Provides incentive to play tournaments, both paid and free. Earning your daily will award 5 tickets (and tickets are very scarce right now) which provides teams with 1 “free” paid tournament a day.
2. Helps speed up queues, especially paid.
3. Monthly’s award dedicated PvPers with tickets and loot
There’s nothing wrong with conquest. I’d actually imagine raw arenas to get old much faster and also be harder to balance.
It’s fun for me but I only play paid/free tournies. If those didn’t exits I would’ve probably quit a month ago.
So many L2P issues. Maybe when you guys can make it past r20 you’ll understand how inexperienced you sound.
So tired of all the INSERTCLASSHERE whining because people don’t know how to counter them. Remember this is a team game. If people really need me to explain why something is OP/Not OP I don’t mind.

How are backstab thieves ruining tournaments then? Because they have burst and you aren’t dodging, using a stun breaker, or have any kind of defense in your build?
What the nerf accomplished was 1. balancing dancing dagger so that you don’t have an AoE backstab and 2. reducing the upfront burst from CnD + Steal which didn’t allow people to react. Note that a huge chunk of thief’s burst damage comes from their backstab. Any good player will instinctively dodge after taking tons of damage from the CnD+Steal combo and pop their heal bringing them up to ~75% even if they’re full burst.
Right common glass builds consist of:
1. Well Necro
2. Thief
3. Warrior
4. Ranger [Vyndetta, only ranger NA]
5. Condi Engineer
6. Mesmer
7. Burst elementalist
And now look at all the counters they have, assuming they don’t see the Thief coming and are stunned from venom:
1. Deathshroud to soak up most of the burst damage is your only option is you’re running 3 wells, burst necros still have around ~1200+ toughness.
2. Shadowstep as a double stun breaker into either Heal/Shadow refuge to stealth for a long time.
3. Endure pain in traits/as a utility or if not running endure pain, balanced stance into shield block.
4. Protect me + Signet of Stone or Lightning Reflexes.
5. Elixir S in traits/utility, Elixir R to rez yourself if you have no stun breaks or Elixir S trait.
6. Blink, Decoy, and Distortion are all incredibly strong.
7. Armor of earth and mist form.
As you can see, each has their own way to deal with burst.

There so much wrong in this thread I don’t know where to start.
Nerfs to Thieves put them very slightly under-par with Warrior atm.
Burst builds aren’t “ruining” anything. I don’t know why you think this.
Hotjoin isn’t balanced (hasn’t ever been) and shouldn’t be what the game is balanced around.
99% of QQ I read is L2P issues.
PS: If you’re playing Thief without 900 toughness you’re playing it wrong.

New streamer =D
Soon™
To be fair, other games have had years to develop all these things. WoW didn’t have ranked PvP almost 4 years, and I’m sure LoL and the other “E-Sport” titles out there took their fair share of time as well.
Give it some time. They (supposedly) have the PvP blog finished and are just translating it.
If you want to be a tanky Thief, venomshare is probably the way to go. This build is definitely not that, with only 14k HP and 1,100 toughness I doubt you’d last long in a 2v1.
Daggerstorm isn’t practical even against multiple targets unless you’re condition damage. The damage without rabid amulet is really low. Thieves guild will give you good damage, a knockdown, and AoE blind.
As for using the 20% reduction trait, both roll and haste are things you use once in a fight. Fights rarely last longer than 30 seconds, especially as thief regardless of your spec. Bountiful Theft lets you steal important boons and gives you 2x faster dodge regen, dodge roll spam = win.
Edit: If you’re going into crit strikes you NEED berserker’s amulet. Divinity runes are nice because each one gives 3% (says 2%) per one, you get around 68% crit damage total.
Builds are updated in the description, I mainly use the roamer one.
About your build:
First of all, not sure what your amulet/runes are.
*15 in Critical Strikes isn’t enough if damage is the route you want to go. The 5% health bonus isn’t very strong with low precision. If you want damage you’re better off going full into Deadly Arts.
*Shadow Arts is a bad idea unless you’re venom share. Stealth duration and all that is pretty useless.
*Swiftness on dodge isn’t really needed. The 5 points can be spent elsewhere.
*In Trickery I’d probably use VII instead of shorter CD on haste. Haste is situational and not a spam skill.
*Blinding Powder isn’t nearly as strong as devourer venom, roll for initiative, or shadowstep/ambush trap. I’d suggest either roll or shadowstep in place of it for a stunbreaker.
*Dagger Storm is only good if you’re condi spec in a large fight. Thieves guild will almost ensure you win 1v1s.
(edited by Raytek.6193)
Play Necro. 3/4 those Guardians are probably specced wrong anyhow.
New streamer, let me know how the quality is and feel free to ask questions.
Yeah the bugs are hurting Necro the most right now. All I’m hearing on these forums though is “100 blades is OP, nerf thieves, mesmer clones are OP” etc… it’s all an L2P issue.
Explain to me why you think x is OP and I’ll tell you why it’s not.
Still doing tryouts, need 1 or 2 more.

Spawn timers are roughly 20 seconds, they occur at 0 – 18 – 38 – 58
Time your deaths and kills around them. Is the timer at 15 and you’re getting stomped? Let him kill you so you have a 3 second spawn.
