That’s a very crude comparison, but I think it suggests that 50 would be just a bit much. Spidy’s current prices put a Favor of the Festival at roughly 13 gold if you want to make a new one for yourself.
That would make Obsidian Shards 26 silver each.
(For about twenty minutes, before suddenly the prices on the other two skyrocket due to people buying them to exchange for Obsidian Shards.)
I don’t care one way or another about exchanging the Favor of the Festival for an alternate reward, but it’s interesting to see what kinds of unintended consequences, like rising prices for the components, come out of the idea.
Tooltips aren’t the most exciting updates in the world, but I am glad to see how much they’ve improved, adding in better explanations of what combos with what and providing more detailed info in general. It’s good, basic improvement.
Pretty sure Zhaitan knows darn well what it’s about. While we don’t talk much to it directly, Zhaitan has enough mouthpieces throughout the game that we can see that it’s an intelligent, greedy, and altogether malicious personality. We don’t relate to it as a person, because it’s meant to be on a scale like natural disasters, but, unlike natural disasters, Zhaitan is acting purposefully.
As it seems to me, the Elder Dragons being like forces of nature is a statement on the size of their (apparently evil, self-serving) personalities and the size of their power. They’re not devoid of personality, and Zhaitan at least seems fully aware of its actions.
Alternatively, if you prefer to think of each of the “mouthpieces” of Zhaitan as linked, but more independent personalities, then the dragon could be more directly comparable to a disease or natural disaster. If we could wage a war to wipe out, say, earthquakes or hurricanes, that would be a battle worth fighting, eh? Zhaitan is an obstacle for player characters (and NPCs) to overcome, and they’re the focus of the story, so I don’t mind if the dragon isn’t a well-rounded villain.
Arah’s story mode is difficult (relative to most personal story missions,) and it’s long, so it can be problematic to get a group that will get through it. It’s not super difficult, but you need people to pay attention and work together, which is sometimes easier said than done if they’re used to just flailing away and respawning until everything is dead.
There’s a fight with two dragon servants on an airship that I find particularly troublesome, because people have to both operate the cannons and protect those using the cannons, and the dragons have a tendency to heal while the party is respawning if you’re wipe out.
Try not to let it discourage you, though, because it’s very satisfying when you complete it! (Or, at least, I found it satisfying. Others’ mileage may vary.)
I really wish there was some way to change hair accessory color after character creation, either by giving it a dye slot somehow or just linking it to one of the headgear dye slots (if headgear is equipped.)
As it is, I just stick to neutral colors, especially shades of grey, which won’t stick out later if I change my mind on a color scheme or just want to mix it up some.
Another principle I have is not to spend any more $$ on the game, so sorry, that doesn’t work for me.

For what it’s worth, I’m glad to see the things the festival has brought back. I don’t mind the supposed reduction in prestige, and I’m glad to be able to pick up one or two items that I missed or skipped, personally. People complain about temporary content and locking out particular rewards forever, and this kind of thing is a good solution. I thought it was great when they added it to GW1, and I’m glad we don’t have to wait for the end of the game’s life cycle for players to get a second chance at cool skins.
There’s a certain amount of balance to be had, because I don’t want everything to be super-frequently available, but I’m inclined err on the side of letting players earn the historical skins they want over locking them out for the sake of retaining some supposed amount of prestige.

I have every LS exclusive item since launch and I’m perfectly fine with how they returned them to the game~ No need to hog everything for ourselves. ;x Would also be a waste of data imo to leave them out permanently. Probably the only thing GW1 did that I don’t mind being changed. I was so sad when I missed the Halloween Cat Ears forever. XD
Whether this does you any good or not, you’ve actually been able to get old GW1 Halloween items since 2012, when they stopped introducing new hats. I can’t find the the old news post about it, but I think the idea was that, as the game gradually winds down, they could afford to let off of some of the exclusitivity-based prestige in favor of letting people get old hats they’d missed. (Especially considering they weren’t going to have the resources to keep making new ones.)
That’s for a game shifting into long-term, low-maintenance mode, but I’m glad to see that we’re not going to have to wait that long to get repeats of at least some event items.
Eh, it’s a personal thing, but I’m okay with it. I picked up nearly all the Living Story rewards the first time through, but I did skip the Fused Gauntlets, so it will be nice to have a second chance to pick them up and round off the set.
There’s a balance to be had between keeping souvenirs exclusive and just letting people have the cool skins that they want. The game still gets its sense of history, and players get the rush of excitement from finally getting a chance at a rare skin they might have seen and read about, but couldn’t get.
As long as they don’t do it too frequently, I’m A-okay with it.

Interesting to compare this to Super Adventure Box, which is a similar concept, but in new areas (instead of puzzles scattered over the existing world,) with a heavy application of 8-bit paint.
So the people advocating buying gold instead are basically saying BLCs are useless, right?
If you only care about the skin, and not any of the rest of the pile of doodads and thingamajigs you’ll get out of chests, then, yes, you’re probably better off getting the skin directly off the trading post. (If it’s a super expensive skin, then you have a choice between a gamble or a high premium for surety.)
If you just open the occasional chest for the fun of it, and/or you like tonics, boosters, etc., then the BLCs might be something you like.
The main problem is people buying up a ton of keys when they only want a single weapon skin. That’s a recipe for disappointment.
Well, didn’t the Aetherblade Retreat get reworked into a Fractal, along with the Molten Facility? I skipped both of them the first time around, and I’m not really into Fractals, so I don’t know how different they are, but I seem to remember that being the “permanent version” of those things.
Then, Queen’s Gauntlet is coming back tomorrow, so it may be that it, like SAB, is a sorta-seasonal attraction. You could make an argument for these things being accessible all year long, but, there’s an argument to be made for them coming and going, too. There’s a reason the circus comes to town and then leaves.
There are still some instances, like the Canach fight, Scarlet’s Playhouse, the Tower of Nightmares instance, and Scarlet’s finale that are gone and probably won’t be back. While I’d like to see them return somehow, because they were generally enjoyable, I’m not sure how much dev time / effort I want to see put into such a thing.
Since the OP mentioned rewards, I think they’d be better as historical things without much reward, if any, for beating them in historical mode.
While I think $50+ for an in-game cosmetic item is much, much more than I’m willing to pay, personally, I can’t agree that I feel like I’m being pushed super hard into paying cash. I’ve been able to buy a fair few things I’ve wanted by converting gold to gems, and I’ve never really felt disadvantaged by not buying a gem store item.
Your mileage may vary, but I’m not really bothered by GW2’s setup on that front. I wish they’d do away with the gambling entirely, so it wouldn’t take advantage of people like the OP, but now that you can buy/sell Black Lion Ticket weapons on the trading post,, it’s a lot less distasteful than it was when they were pure RNG.
Do the number of days tell us anything relevant?
(I don’t have a strong opinion about precursor drop rates; I’m just interested in the way information is presented as a rhetorical matter.)
I suppose we can calculate, on average, how many hours a day each poster plays, but most of what I’m getting from this thread is “RNG stinks.” Which it does.
How much wealth have each of you raised over that time, including gold-convertible assets? (If I craft ascended armor, for example, my current gold total is going to be substantially lower than my overall wealth once I factor in things I’ve spent that gold on.)

If it takes 47 keys on average to make a full ticket,
1 ticket = 50 keys = $52.5
If the OP spent $100 and only got one key, either our drop rate from the wiki is off, or, more likely, the OP has some insanely bad luck. Sigh. RNG is RNG.
Let’s consider what Cash→Gems→Gold looks like:
$52.50 = 4,200 gems = 307.35 G
$100 = 8,000 gems = 588.23G
Now it’s important to consider what weapon you want to buy. If it’s, say, a Lovestruck Weapon (50-95 gold on trading post) then you’re much, much better off converting gems to gold and buying the weapon directly, instead of getting tickets.
Lovestruck, Dreamthistle, Halloween 2013, Zodiac, and Sclerite weapons are all (generally) under 300 gold— Indeed, most of them are substantially cheaper. Aetherized and Fused weapons are more expensive, but still well under 500G. (450G for Fused Warhorn seems to be the worst.)
So if you’re buying keys for the dyes, tonics, boosters, and whatever else, that’s one thing, but if, like the OP, you only want the Black Lion Tickets, save your money and just buy your favorite weapon on the Trading Post.
Good: You can buy weapons on the Trading Post for substantially less than you should expect to pay gambling on them.
Bad: Players like the OP are going to continue to assume BL keys are their best route, even though they’re spending a fortune on extras they don’t really want.
Ugly: For the pricier Fused and Aetherized skins, you’ve got to decide if you want to gamble on them or cough up the extra coins to buy them outright. You might save money, or you might lose big without a single ticket to show for it.
I might use one as I’m leveling up a character and it’s better than no upgrade, but I almost always vendor them otherwise. That might not be 100% the most efficient use for them (See: Mystic Forge, possible exceptions on the Trading Post,) but it takes up the least mental space to just write them all off as junk now.
Unless there’s a lucrative market in Gemstones that I’m not aware of, the potential profit I’m missing out on seems too small to bother about. I know Silver Dubloons are freakishly valuable, but it’s rare my level 80 characters get marks to forge them, on top of the low yield rate.

As Astral Projections says, I believe that’s just referring to skill points, map completion, unlocked traits, crafting, etc. Generally, it’s not stuff to worry about, especially now that WvW ranks and armor dyes are account-based. Most character-based unlocks are repeatable on new characters.
The main things I’d be careful about losing by deleting a character would be any rare or unusual items they have (obviously, move to another character if not soulbound,) and possibly rare crafting recipes, like Recipe: Gift of Blades, which was only sold as part of the Living World and may not become available again.
As long as this thread continues, the conversation of mass will be maintained.

Just…use the costume consumables. Using one unlocks the outfit for all of your characters on your account.
You receive several of them from the Black Lion Armorer because you get one for each part of the costume: Boots, gloves, coat, hat. That way, if you deleted (accidentally or intentionally) any of the pieces, but still had at least one, you’d unlock the full outfit.
So, if you’ve traded in the old town clothes version for the consumables, go ahead and use one, then you’re free to discard the rest, as there’s no use for them. (Since you can’t “unlock an outfit twice.”)
I don’t want to see the city rebuilt overnight, of course, because that would cheapen its destruction, but I do want to see it rebuilt. I like Lion’s Arch. It’s an important city in game lore and the community. It’ll take time, and it won’t be the same, but it needs to be rebuilt.
I don’t expect any voting for this year’s Festival, though; what is there to vote on, really? Which parts of the city get rebuilt first?
That might be interesting in concept, but you’d get the trade district, then the gate plaza(s), because those things have practical use. Then there wouldn’t be enough interest to have a really fun time deciding whether the Moa Races or Fort Marriner gets rebuilt first; unlike a character election, it’s not really enough to build a cause around.
Meanwhile, people would continue to use the Vigil Keep services, or else have to split between them and LA, which is a nuisance. That might happen as the city gets rebuilt, and I don’t terribly mind that, but it’s hardly exciting enough to build a Living Story feature around.
Edit: Vol might be onto something, by having it as an out-of-game or semi-out-of-game thing voting on concept art for things like new statues or buildings. That’s a good way to connect with a community, and can be done in a way that isn’t disruptive or boring. (Example: Sketches go up and people vote. Winner is selected, and the finished product naturally takes time to be created by artists, which translates into game-time construction.)

How long did it take to rebuild the Lion Statue after Mad King Thorn destroyed it? While rebuilding a living city is higher priority than a statue, I’d wait and see how the dev team handles the roll out of the rebuilding before getting worked up over it.
Even once it’s rebuilt, it’s likely to have a lot of changes to it. Even Kessex Hills still has aftereffects of the Tower of Nightmares.

So what exactly is there to be excited about? Someone inform me please.
Personally, I’m excited to see it again. For comparison, Halloween was disappointingly low in new content, and even had some significant content removed, but I still enjoyed the return of the Labyrinth, Clocktower, and Lunatic Inquisition. (I wasn’t happy about some of the changes this year, but the point is that I still had a good time, when I wasn’t foaming at the mouth over Candy Corn Cob numbers.)
With the Zephyr Sanctum, my favorite bit, Sanctum Sprint, has been around in the activity rotation, so it’s not a big return, but I’m still looking forward to running around in the Cliffs zone, which is a pretty attractive place. As for the Divinity’s Reach portion of the update, I never had any interest in the Gauntlet, but I know some people will be happy to see it again (or for the first time,) and I’ll be happy to see the Crown Pavilion again.
While I certainly hope they add some new story, skins, events, or other content, if it gets as much new content as Wintersday (not much, but without Halloween’s removals,) then there’s still something to be excited about. Returns like this break new content into three categories: Permanent, Temporary, and Seasonal, and that’s not a bad thing.
Whoever was wearing it last is still wearing it, even though you can’t see it, remove it, or swap into it. You need to take that character to the Black Lion Trader (Armorsmith) who is located by the regular Black Lion Trader in any of the large cities and he’ll exchange your old town clothes pieces for the new versions. If you don’t remember which character was wearing it, take them all to talk to him; he’ll give the others tonics for their old town clothes.
If you were wearing multiple pieces of an outfit, like the Mad King outfit, he’ll give you multiple items. The reasoning there is that if you deleted, say, the gloves, but kept that boots, you’ll get a full unlock anyway. Once you use the outfit item that the Black Lion guy gives you, it unlocks the costume for all characters on your account, so you don’t need to keep the extra items, as you can’t sell them or have any real use for them.
Tonics, on the other hand, you seem to be able to sell, so it’s up to you what you do with them.
I hope that helps! Regardless of what you think of the change in the town clothes system (“Boo!” in my case,) I think we can all agree this step wasn’t clearly explained for a lot of people.
Since outfits override your armor, you’re correct in thinking that you can use them to keep the same look throughout your entire character progression.
Technically speaking, and this doesn’t help you, skins from the Hall of Monuments can be applied an unlimited number of times without costing transmutation charges. The Hall of Monuments rewards players for achievements earned playing Guild Wars 1, however, so I only mention it for the sake of completeness.
Other than that, sorry, your character is probably going to have to change appearances while leveling up and acquiring new, level-appropriate gear. You can buy or craft gear with a skin you like to replace your stats while keeping the same look, if the skin you want is tradeable / craftable.
If you’re just starting out, change might be a good thing. You’ll end up trying on a lot of different skins over time, so that when you reach the upper levels, obtaining your “final appearance” can have a bit more pizzazz than continuing to wear the same armor you did the whole way. It’s one way for a character to grow up, in a sense.

If you’re floating between 15 and 25 FPS while playing, I’d probably rule out recording on that machine. Even a lightweight recording program is going to drag that down, and 15-25 FPS isn’t exactly smooth to begin with. You can try it, but the stutter is going to be pretty bad most likely.

Currently, a Character Slot costs about 56.8 gold, or $10. (USD) You can convert gold to gems via the Black Lion Trading Post window. (Press [O] in game to open it.)
As Erich says, you can earn some gems via achievement chests, but it’s not a lot or very frequent. I used some to pay for half a character slot a while back, which was a nice discount, but it’s not a very practical alternative to ponying up some cash or gold.
To expand on that, there’s nothing in the Heroic Edition that can’t be bought separately in the gem store. There’s no reason to buy the game again for it.
The Heroic Chest is, as of right now, approximately a $14 value (USD,) assuming you were going to buy 10 XP boosters, a legacy armor skin, and an 18-slot mithril box.
Regarding the Mad King outfit, it’s a fairly safe bet to say it’ll return in October for Halloween. I wouldn’t really expect it to go on sale again until then, although you never know.
Last month, they did a big rework to how outfits/costumes work, so they’ve been cycling through the old holiday outfits (Wintersday, Mad King, Bloody Prince, etc.) now that those outfits can be worn in combat.
“WvW+AC” is referring to her character, the female one. The male character (another player) is wearing a Phalanx helm and pants, probably a Phalanx chest piece, and Radiant gloves. I think he’s just hiding his shoulders, though I’m not sure, and I can’t see his boots well enough to say on those.
Edit: Looks like The Pointless beat me to it. I’ll add that, yes, you can still get the Phalanx Armor in the gem store for 800 gems, or approximately 74 gold. (Which is a lot, but still cheaper than T3 cultural armor.)

I like the underwater sections of the game, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for major new developments in that area in the near future. Aquatic combat has some baggage that goes along with it that land-based combat simply doesn’t have, and while it’s neat, I don’t think it’s ever been outrageously popular, either.
Weapon and skill options are a lot more limited underwater; for example, my ranger can’t use traps at all, which can be a problem if I’ve traited for it. Most characters have one, maybe two elite skills that work underwater, and only one or two weapon options. There’s just no room for significant diversity there, so adding new underwater combat has some significant hurtles to overcome to compete with just adding more ground combat.
Things could change in the future, of course, but we’ve never heard any plans for it, and it’s removal from PvP doesn’t exactly suggest that the devs are in love with it, which seems like the only way it could grab all the extra attention it would need.

While I’m disappointed that we don’t currently have any roadmap for what to expect in the future, I think having a month (well, half a month currently since the Feature Pack,) without updates and saying “They got your money…they’re done with you” is a bit of an overreaction.

That’s an extremely specific definition of “new permanent content.” It’s one thing to want those things, but if you will only accept new content as new content on your own exact terms, how surprising is that you’re disappointed?
For what it’s worth, I generally enjoyed Season 1 of the Living Story. Was it perfect? No. Was it storytelling genius? No. But I had a lot of fun with it, and the frequent updates did an excellent job of keeping me engaged with the game over a long period of time.
I’m looking forward to whatever comes next. Will it be perfect? No. But I’ll probably enjoy it, despite any hiccups.
Ouch; that’s a real drag, to waste so much money/time without anything to show for it. Even if it cost more, I think I’d have to play it on the safe side and just buy a precursor before I’d gamble on it.
Of course, the prices are so high that it’s turned me off ever making a legendary weapon, unless they implement an easier way to get a precursor or one just drops into my lap by chance. Even if I lucked into a Dawn or The Legend, there’s a very good chance I’d just turn around and sell it: With the mountain of gold I’d get, there’s very little (other than a Legendary) that I’d want that I couldn’t afford. (Dyes, infinite tonics, gem store items, etc.) Heck, I could afford to master all of the Ascended Crafting disciplines with that kind of dough.
I think you’re definitely missing the main part of what people mean when they refer to RP / roleplaying, Conaywea, especially in the context of complaints about the recent update. The loss of the Charm, Felocity, and Dignity stats are a tiny part of that, but were never really important, since there was no way for other players to see them or anything they actually did.
You might think of in-game roleplaying as improvised acting (improv.) It’s not something everyone will enjoy, but it’s fun for some, and it emphasizes player-created stories over game mechanics.
RP’rs are unhappy with the megaserver update because it sometimes makes it harder for them to end up in the same zones as each other. For example, Tarnished Coast was the unofficial roleplaying server, so if you logged in on TC, you had better odds of running into people who’d be putting on a show, or who would be receptive to your in-character dramatics. You can still party / guild with other roleplayers to get together, but the megaserver update, for as much good as it does in other areas, hurts spontaneity in this case.
Beyond roleplayers, this update made it harder to build up a server community more generally. Unless you’re in WvW, it’s not really possible to build up any recognizable sense of server community from just seeing the same people around a lot, because you’re mixed in with a much broader range of players. (Is this bad? Sure. Are the other improvements from megaservers worth it? Maybe! That’s another debate.)
As for the wardrobe, roleplayers put a high premium on character customization, and are some of the only people who want regular, non-combat options to dress their characters in. Roleplayers will often carry around multiple sets of clothes which they can mix-and-match and re-dye to create new costumes. While the April update might have simplified transmutation for some people, it was a trainwreck for a lot of the people who actually used town clothes, but can no longer mix them or dye them, or swap into them with a single hotkey.

Wanting them to use Lion’s Arch (Non-Destroyed) for personal story instances there instead of Lion’s Arch (Destroyed) is hardly the same as wanting them to substantially rewrite the personal story. Silly as defending an empty Lion’s Arch is, it’s not practical to rewrite around it, but showing the story instance of the zone the way it was makes a lot more sense. I might know that, outside the instance, the city is abandoned, but at least I wouldn’t see Tybalt shouting to an empty plaza.
I’m not entirely sure I see the complaint. The current schedule ensures that if I want to fight a world boss, one is rarely ever more than fifteen minutes away. It might not be a particular world boss, so if I’m really intent on fighting, say, Ulgoth or Claw of Jormag, I might be in for a long wait, but I feel like I can still hit events a lot more reliably and predictably now. Or, if it feels too predictable, I could just go back to not checking the schedule.
Is this a request for the old system, when you could try guesting to other servers to find the boss you want? This complaint just feels incomplete. :/
I’m not 100% sure I’m understanding you clearly, Poisonwell, but I’m really not that concerned about what the most efficient way to earn rewards is, whether it’s killing everything or skipping as much as possible. People should play dungeons the way they enjoy.

That’s not really a fair comparison. Is it really such a competition between you, personally, and the serious dungeon runners? Which one of you gets to say “This is a foot race, not a car race?”
Just mention that you’re looking for a casual dungeon party, or find one advertising a casual run on the LFG window. Serious dungeon runners and casuals can both enjoy the dungeon experience they like as long as they’re up-front about what their expectations are.
You already seem to be doing that, so I’m not sure what the issue is. If you’re advertising clearly and still can’t find a casual party, it sounds like they’re simply aren’t enough players who want to play the way you do. Perhaps join a guild that does casual runs?
Serious dungeon-running doesn’t interest me, but I don’t see any reason to make them play my way. I don’t want anyone telling me that I’m not playing the way I “should,” so I’m hesitant to tell anyone else that they’re not playing the game the way I think they “should.”
It’s a pretty goofy situation. My guardian recently returned to LA after the Battle of Claw Island, and the next step was fighting off Risen on the beaches of a totally abandoned town. Fort Mariner is in ruins, and it was equal parts hilarious and pitiful to see the Vigil NPCs milling about in a literal crater.
I’m sure there are reasons why they’re using the live version of LA instead of a historical version, but in-game, it makes absolutely no sense. While I’m sympathetic to the problems of having the Living Story and Personal Story take place both simultaneously and one-after-the-other, problems like this aren’t a surprise, and I’d expect them to be better planned-for.
I like to imagine that Tybalt was driven mad by the destruction of Lion’s Arch, as he already had a bit of a tenuous hold on his sanity, and he is just speaking to people who aren’t there or perhaps their “spirits”
