A new tier of gear (1 item) was released that adds a whopping 3 more stats to current best gear. Apparently this a low blow to the community.

Tell the truth.

That is the truth as far as I know

Then you do not know. Reread the posts about the numbers involved. look up the gear we do know about already and compare it for yourself. The issue here isn’t +3 to a stat one time. (Although some people would still get miffed about that, on principle)

Really, look into it more. You will see the issue is far larger than you currently think it is.

I’m sorry but this issue isn’t important enough for me to look it up. But if you want to explain it to me I’d be grateful.

You’re wrong then. It has been calculated that non-max ascended is already 14% better than exotic. thats with FINE infusions. wait til you get masterwork, rare, exotic, ASCENDED infusions.

Sure new tier means its better, so what?

Ah ok. Though this mechanic only applies to this one dungeon so whats the problem?

The problem is that it should apply to zero dungeons.

Why? This is part of PvE content of a MMO, PvE players like to get gear upgrades. If you don’t like PvE why are you even running dungeons?

As a player that enjoys PvE. I do not like gear upgrades. I enjoy running dungeons because they offer interesting social experiences that provide quite intense action. This is the PvE Content of GuildWars 2 a supposedly different kind of MMO. If I wanted gear-progression based game I’d go to certain other MMOs out there, where you have 14+ tiers of gear available to you.

And whats stopping from enjoying PvE as it is? You do realize that at this point in time around 0 people have new tier of gear and yet they still are doing the new dungeon and are still praising it as one of better achievements of GW2 team.

A: Because its fun and exciting, and entertaining.

Gear does not need to equate

So you are saying I don’t need infused Ascended in order to push deeper into Fractal Dungeons? ArenaNet did indicate I would be required to get this new tier in harder difficulties.

Where did they say this?

Right here.

In the upcoming Fractals of the Mists dungeon, we’ll introduce a new monster condition called Agony.
This extremely dangerous condition ticks percentages of player health away and can’t be cleansed by normal means. Players who wish to delve deep into the Fractals will find that Agony makes progress increasingly difficult, until they reach the point where some defense against this condition is a must. The only way to mitigate Agony damage is by building up resistance through Infusions, a new type of upgrade component that can be acquired in the Mystic Forge.

And Infusions can only be applied to Ascended gear.

Ah ok. Though this mechanic only applies to this one dungeon so whats the problem?

Think of it this way. You order a cheeseburger and end up getting tofu. Its still in a bun and it might look the same in some instances but it different than what you ordered.

People want to be comfortable with character completion (not having to worry about leveling up or gearing up) this new tier potentially changes this feeling as the new gear is essentially required in order to remain competitive.

Well I got good new for youuuuuuuu! New gear is not required to stay competitive:D:D:D:D:D:D:D!!!!!!!

One bullet point for WvW on the November 15th update.

I’d be glad to give them my consulting rates if they ever need someone to unkitten their databases.

Edit: I bet I’d be able to do whatever one-line change it makes to not have superior siege despawn on event resets! Also ran into an enemy veteran archer in my tower at Durios yesterday. Must be really, really hard to get those things to spawn for the right team. This codebase has the consistency of a PHP app.

Well good luck, I’ll vouch for you if they ask for references

Why is it dangerous to make a statement? If they tell me this is their design choice and how the game will work now then I will leave and you won’t hear from me again.

They already have my money, what the hell difference does it make? All I ask is that they spare me the trouble of sticking around.

Also, you’ll forgive me if I take the logical assumption that they will not revert what’s already been done, as I have never ever seen it happen in the past.

Another trend in the forums for said games (ie Blizzard forums, tbh), is to relax, that nothing is final, that the game or the patch or the expansion is in its early stages. That there’s no point in complaining or stressing out.

Yet, without fail, the worst always happens.

You have all the rights to be worried about the future of the game but please stop assuming so much. Where does it say the point of new content is to get more gear? The way I see it is that new gear is just a part of new content. It’s not mandatory, it’s not necessary but if you want it then its there for you to obtain, if you don’t want it then fine, just enjoy the new dungeons, new pvp maps, new story driven world events.

What is there to assume? This is the nature of what they introduced.

Hell, the fact that their blog entry says “we won’t be releasing new tiers every 3 months” suggests that there’s a good chance they will be releasing new tiers eventually.

What point is there in new tiers unless they are eventually required to clear the content? It’s called power creep.

A chance is all it is, do you know for sure that will happen? No. Is it a possiblity? Yes. The fact is that it’s only been 2 days since patch and yet people are already assuming that things are heading for the worst.

I don’t like the fact that ANet doesn’t directly respond to the issues that keep rising up here at the forums but at the same time I understand how dangerous it is for them to make any kind of statement because of type of community this is.

As said before this “grind” is optional. You DO NOT need ascended gear in order to finish the current available content. You DO NOT need ascended gear for WvWvW in order to stay competitive.

For starters, players on my server are already starting to demand level 80s in full exotics for their runs.

Second of all:

It’s called “slippery slope”.

The current content is built towards the gear players have at the moment. But unfortunately the point of the current content is to get MORE gear.

So that you can do the next content.

To get MORE gear.

And so on, and so forth.

They could have made the point of the content, oh I don’t know, enjoyment. Story-driven campaigns which unlocked new skills, weapons, classes. GW1 did it. It worked. I played the game from launch and loved it.

You have all the rights to be worried about the future of the game but please stop assuming so much. Where does it say the point of new content is to get more gear? I think what ANet is trying to do is to NOT make it as easy because GW2 is a MMO and GW1 wasn’t.

Grind =/= difficulty.

Underworld in GW1 was difficult, yet we did it when we were already sporting maxed gear.

Also, I think I need to stop seeing that excuse everywhere, because you cannot tout a game such as GW2 as “different than the rest” and “tantalizing to people who generally don’t like MMOs” and then go and do what everyone else is doing.

All those promises down the drain.

As said before this “grind” is optional. You DO NOT need ascended gear in order to finish the current available content. You DO NOT need ascended gear for WvWvW in order to stay competitive.

Video games are part of real life, as you say, so same concepts apply. And unlike you I’m not making things up to make a point.

Dude, what are you talking about? This is a fictional universe with a very liberal approach to the laws of physics, amongst other things. Which is understandable because it’s a video game, a work of fiction set in a fantastical universe.

There are no concepts in GW2 that you can apply to the real world. There are some similarities, sure, but you cannot use a video game as a reference to real life. It just doesn’t work.

I hate to spell it out for you but the concept that applies to both GW2 and real world is becoming better at something. You say you want to be a NFL player, well then you better put time and effort in order to get there. You say you want to be competitve in GW2, well you better put time and effort in order to do so.

I don’t understand why new content has to have mobs hitting harder and taking more punishment.

Again I cite GW1 and all the expansions as an example. 90% of Cantha and Elona was aimed at max level characters and it was easy to get geared and leveled up as a result of this.

It did not make the campaigns any less fun.

By making mobs beefier all they’re doing is forcing us to GRIND before clearing content, instead of just clearing content.

I think what ANet is trying to do is to NOT make it as easy because GW2 is a MMO and GW1 wasn’t.

Irrelevant, but I am a long distance runner. I don’t consider this a sport. I consider this a game.

Oh it is relevant, would you say you would be able to be a competitve long distance runner just because you got amazing running shoes?

If the shoes had +5 to run speed on them, sure.

What do you think the difference between $20 shoes and $200 shoes is?

Dude, you’re applying real life example to a video game. In real life if you fall 20 meters, you’ll seriously hurt yourself, in the game, you slow down for a second and your health regens to full.

This is a video game, real world examples do not apply.

Um, I’m not talking about fantasy part of the game. What do you have to do in real world to be competitive? and what do you have to do in game to be competitive?

Apparently in the real world I have to put on my +5 running shoes and I’m well on the way to qualify for the Olympics.

Yep just like in game if you got ascended gear you are the best PvPer, amiright?

You’re missing the point, which is that you cannot use real life examples in relation to a video game.

In real life, I can buy a $100 boxing gloves or $20 boxing gloves but neither of those gloves will make my punches stronger.

In GW2, ascended gear will make me punch stronger, regardless of my ability as a player. See the difference?

Please show me where you can boxing gloves that cost $100 that don’t have some kind of gimmick.

Are we seriously having this discussion? The price of the gloves doesn’t matter… Dude, look, please concentrate for a second. Real life and video games are completely different things. You cannot use examples from one in reference to the other. They simply do not apply.

Video games are part of real life, as you say, so same concepts apply. And unlike you I’m not making things up to make a point.

These new items are must haves to compete in wvwvw, and there is only one way to get them – crappy dungeon grinds that many of us Hate.

Wow, it’s not very often that I would do this, but I’m actually going to encourage you to quit the game. Please.

Weird that players of any decent skill can compete in WvW with level 20 characters, and level 20 gear, but apparently you can’t even compete without top-tier weapons.

If you actually examine the game’s mechanics, I think an enormous facepalm would be in order. I mean you do realise that the majority of stats are actually innate to a character based on the distribution of attribute points, right? All gear actually does is let you further specialise your stats in whatever direction you want to take. I have no doubt whatsoever that I would be able to beat a less-skilled player than me with gear that isn’t even max level, let alone top-tier. A big part of that is my character’s innate stats and being able to distribute my attributes into a well-thought-out build, and an even bigger part of that is player skill. The idea that someone could care so kitten much about a tiny difference in gear stats says to me that that person probably doesn’t even understand how this game fundamentally works, let alone have any skill at it.

lol have you closely examined the stats of these items? they aren’t small improvements. Yes, stats Do matter.

Not in a zerg against a zerg they don’t

Well it seems like these days when a new game comes out people have this set vision of that the game will be like, and if the actual game doesn’t match their vision then it’s time to launch an attention attack and cry as much as possible.

No. It’s not that we had this “set vision of what the game will be like.” This “set vision” was actively advertized by ArenaNet absolutely everywhere. Comic-cons, gaming-cons, magazines, preview articles. Hell, even ArenaNet’s own blog, Twitter and Facebook.

This vision lasted about 3 months and now we got dungeon gear grinding and hot pink gear. Both of which are a complete contradiction of what was advertized prior to game’s release. I know I purchased the game specifically because it was advertized to not be what it is now, as of this patch.

Dungeon gear grinding was out since release…?

I think they are already working on something like that, though it’s unknown how long till we get more information on WvWvW updates.

If you’re all just going to cry over a new tier of items, why even have god kitten items in this game? Why have fine, masterwork, rare, or exotic tiers? It’s too unfair for those who only have lower tier items! We should just eliminate all items for ever so the babies don’t have to collect a single piece of gear forever.

That is a very valid concern, even if stated in a very childish manner.

Childish? Look at all these other posts by the people crying over ascended. They want everything handed to them and when things went in a different direction they all act like its the end of the world. I swear some of these people are crying themselves to sleep.

Compared to some of the posts by all these other people this was hardly childish.

Standard MMO community procedures, did you not receive the manual?

Out of all the MMOs I’ve ever played, even in the most Pay to win F2P MMOs, I’ve NEVER seen a MMO community more selfish and pathetic as this one.

Well, my friend. Our job here is to set the bar as low as possible and I believe if we work together we can achieve this grand task.

I’m not even kidding. These people think THEY’RE betrayed? They haven’t played a F2P MMO with a cash shop yet. They have it lucky.
