I would recommend Guardian or Warrior for new people. They’re probably the most powerful classes for leveling on your own and they both bring a lot to the group too. Warrior is more dps and Guardian is more healing/ support, but they are both great. I’d give them both a try and see which one you like more. You can take any class into pvp and they will be temporarily auto leveled to 80, so you can see what their different abilities do if you don’t want to invest too much time in leveling them up before deciding.
Just so you know, my main is Thief, so I’m not being biased, I’m considering which class might be most enjoyable to you based on your love of the Shaman class in WoW. :P I do thoroughly enjoy the Guardian though, probably my second favorite class after Thief.
Like those above me have said, go sword/ pistol. The area of effect from the sword and the blind from black powder are a must for leveling. I was like you too, I almost gave up on my thief because comparing it to other classes, it just felt underpowered in pve.
I learned that the thief is about not getting hit, whether through blind, stealth or mobility, we just can’t allow ourselves to take damage in pve or we will die very quickly.
It’s all worth it in the end though, thief is my favorite class and my main. Just stick with it, and try sword/ pistol.
I completed the clock tower, took about 2 hours worth of attempts for me. After an hour I was semi consistently getting near or to the final jump. I liked the tower but the last jump was irritating because a couple times it really looked like i made it through the break in the clock.
Yep, I realized I had to jump straight forward, and not lean at all to the right (so that it looked like I was hitting the wall to the left side of the clock face and not the actual hole). It took me about 3 faceplants into the side of the tower to realize it.
The jump puzzle reminds me a lot of ps2 (and earlier) platform games, unforgiving, uncompromising, one tiny mistake and you start all the way from the beginning. I think it’s nice that an MMO can attempt to incorporate this type of game play for those that love it, and it’s a shame that the entitled complainers feel the need to try to ruin it for everyone because it’s too difficult for them.
I don’t think that every player needs to complete 100% of all content offered in an MMO, I think it’s great that there is at least one challenge that people really had to work for.
Right here.
It sucks that the people who are complaining about this event probably are keyboard turners and clickers
It makes me sad that these kind of people are in the majority, and because of this we won’t see content as fun and challenging as the clocktower
I’m a keyboard turner and a clicker. Not sure what you’re trying to imply with that statement.
I can’t get over how great Lion’s Arch looks. I actually completed a lot of the vistas during this event and I was very impressed. Here’s another screenshot I took showing the cauldron in Lion’s Arch.
Wow, some of you guys’ characters need to put some clothes on. :P
This is my only Halloween screenshot so far, but I’m certainly going to be taking more now, a lot of these look great.
Black Lion Chests are fine as they are. Putting anything in them that is “Oh my [diety] amazing!” would result in the system turning into “you must buy this, or miss out on cool stuff that you won’t see otherwise.”
You must not have bought any keys. For those of us who did, thinking we’d get some cool Halloween stuff and getting absolutely nothing new or seasonal out of them, it was a waste of money. If I had wanted that stuff, I would have bought the keys earlier. No one is saying there should be unique Black Lion Chest only content, we just would have liked more the big “nothing” that we got.
I agree with the OP, the random chance to get an item from the Black Lion Chests never should have been implemented. It just wasn’t worth it to the player base. I wish I had spent those gems on the minis or a costume instead. Oh well, lesson learned.
After three days of attempting it off and on, I finally get to add myself to this thread.
Charr, Thief. No movement speed enhancement.
I’ve done every single event on my level 25 (33 now from all the exp I got this week) engineer.
I needed help with getting to Sparkfly fen for the second book, but luckily there were a lot of high level people going that way that I could tag along with. I kept dying, but some really nice players kept coming back to rez me. I mean, yeah there were some people who trained mobs towards me and didn’t care at all that they killed me as they ran away, leaving me lying there dead, but at least there were also plenty of kind players to help me out.
And if you don’t do it correctly, you’ll still get your weapons back, but you fall down and take some damage. :P
You only have to wait until the last person falls or completes the puzzle, so if you’re last to fall, there’s no wait.
I like watching the clip of the tower because it shows me how far I’ve made it before I fell. So far I’ve managed to make it about 3/4 the way up. There’s almost no wait once you make it to the pink part of the tower, and most people don’t even make it past the “pause” section so there aren’t even any character models to worry about either.
Honesty the amount of stuff they’ve given us for this event is way more than some DLC I’ve paid money for from other games. All this with no additional cost to us. Of course I did buy some gems to buy something.. not sure if I want the minis, the Mad King costume (which looks a little dumb on a Charr) or the witch costume, so hard to decide.
Yeah, it’s sad that the displeased minority has been the most vocal. The rest of us are too busy having fun in game to come here I guess. :P
It was bugged yesterday too before they fixed it.. guess it’s bugged again. I was able to just keep clicking random haunted doors until one let me in. It seems like the regular trick or treat doors do have a chance to randomly become one of the pumpkin doors for a short period of time, even if the meta event chain has not been completed.
Well I loaded into Lion’s Arch 10 minutes before the event so I’m not super upset that it didn’t work for me. But I sure am glad some people recorded it, it looks really cool. I had no idea that the Mad King was supposed to be in that hole. Thanks for sharing that video for those of us who missed it!
Actually it’s PDT technically. It’s 19:00 GMT if that helps. Pacific time is on Daylight savings Time right now, which means we are -7 GMT instead of the usual -8 GMT when we are on PST.
Noon our time would be 7pm GMT (take our time and add 7 hours), which is 19:00 GMT.

Hope this helps.
Looks like it’s fixed now. The events trigger normally so you can do the quest chain to open all the doors.
Maybe he lives in a timezone where 7pm GMT is 12pm? :P Well I know it is for me (PST), but 12pm is Noon, not Midnight. We can tell you the exact time for you if you let us know your time zone.
I can confirm this, I’ve gotten in 3 times today just wandering around until I find a lucky door. Just keep knocking on doors until one lets you in.
GMT actually does not change during day light savings, whichever time zone you are in changes in relation to Greenwich Mean Time. For example, I live in the Pacific time zone, which is -8 GMT, but during day light savings we are actually -7 GMT (even though everything relating to our time zone always says -8 GMT).
It’s bugged on my server too. The scholars just do the same two events over and over and the final event that spawns the boss and then the doors does not trigger. However, I was able to enter the mad king’s realm by knocking on haunted doors until one let me in. It spawned a treat bag, just like during act 1, but the door allowed me to interact with it after that (Enter the Mad King’s Realm). There were no pumpkin icons on the map, the scholars were not done with their thing, and it took me several doors before I could find one to let me in. (just completed this right now)
Hope this helps some of you.

When the doors aren’t up, try going to the village of Shaemoor. I believe the letter we received said something about events occurring outside Divinity’s Reach? Haven’t tried the other zones mentioned yet, but there are some cool events going on when the doors are not up. Like pre-events to the doors I guess.
I have made more than 5 in a day. Are you sure you are not trying to use boosters that don’t work for the recipe? Like the exp chain ones?
I liked it too. I don’t understand why people have such a huge problem with things they don’t enjoy. You don’t like it? Fine, leave it for the people who do.
I think he was confused about what a “buff” is. It’s a positive status effect. Basically, anything that boosts your character (stats, health regen, magic find, etc.) for a temporary duration.
The Halloween recipes for Karma are for cooking and artificing, you can also discover runes by combining some of the random stuff you get from bags (like candy corn, skulls and nougat).
Yeah, I have to agree, I heard this in Lion’s Arch and it really set the mood for Halloween. This event has been great so far, I can’t wait for the next acts.
I’ve noticed that multiple people can knock on the door at once and everyone benefits from what comes out of the door, so it’s better with more people.
My favorite is the “fight waves of skeletons” event that sometimes comes out of the door.
Anachnophobia short bow cant be transmuted and has a 3 hour countdown timer ???

You can buy it with silver too instead of wasting candy corn. Also you can see the time limit before you even buy it. The actual permanent weapon skins are very rare and difficult to make, these cheap versions are just fun that everyone can play around with for a little bit. Otherwise I’m pretty sure we’d all be using them and then they wouldn’t be rare or interesting.
There’s a black plastic spider and a green glow in the dark one. I had to laugh out loud when I jumped in that cauldron in Lion’s Arch and flew out as a tiny plastic spider, hopping around like some child’s toy.
I’m pretty disappointed with the negativity on the forums. The people who are not having fun are obviously the more vocal since those of us who are having fun are probably in game enjoying it instead of browsing the forums. There are a ton of negative threads already if you guys want to complain there.
I just wanted to add my opinion I guess, since I’m one of the people having a ton of fun with this event. There is actually a lot more to this event than I originally thought, with the awesome decorations, pumpkin carving, cool costumes, weapon skins, new recipes, candy corn nodes, costume brawl and of course the scavenger hunt.
I went to Lion’s Arch with a low level character and was doing some of the vistas there. I must say it looks fantastic with all the Halloween decorations. I can’t wait for the next act!
For the “Halloween Hunting” achievement, you need to kill monsters (such as candy corn monsters) that come out of “Haunted Doors” throughout the world. I found a good map to do this while doing the scavenger hunt. Good Luck!
I felt the same way as you before I discovered pistols. Having a pistol off hand is a must for pve leveling because of one skill: black powder. I’m not even sure how we’re supposed to level without it. I like dagger/ pistol for some situations and sword/ pistol for fighting multiple enemies (or those mole people who are immune to blind).
Thief is my main class, but I do feel that they are much weaker in pve situations than the other classes I’ve tried. I think the key to playing the thief is trying to not let the enemy hit you, whether it be from blind (my preferred method) or evasion (like the dual dagger build). Other classes have ways to block, mitigate or heal damage, we are supposed to avoid it, I think.
I know that there’s a trick to the Lovers, I actually really like that it kind of gives you a hint what to do and that the fight implies you will need to think about a way to kill them. I would think it was a fun and challenging boss fight if they didn’t kill us almost instantly with one lightning storm before we even had time to dodge out of it.
I’m sure the dungeons are really easy, like all things, once you’ve done them a bit. I’m just upset that there is no preparation for this. There is no easing in to it. It’s like learning to ride a bike without training wheels or assistance of any kind. And like learning to ride a bike, I’m sure it’s probably super easy once you get the hang of it and you wonder to yourself how it could have ever been hard. It just sucks that the very first impression that new people get of dungeons is this.
Also, I would really expect to get much better gear from a dungeon than I could get on my own, especially with the difficulty, but instead I got white and blue items that were worse than the gear I was wearing (I was wearing level 30 gear because I was level 30). That was part of the disappointment I felt.
I think I’ll probably just stick to leveling up until I’m strong enough for another attempt, which is a shame because normally I really like dungeons in MMOs. I think these ones just might be balanced for people with the gear and level that the dungeon suggests.
I actually gave it two tries. One yesterday and one today. As a new player doing dungeons for the first time, I have to ask, how are these even possible to do?
I know that there are always people saying how they wish things were more challenging or that the difficulty is fine, but it is impossible for new people to do AC with a pick up group. This is the first dungeon in the game, I don’t think it should provide a challenge that basically just causes the party to die every time there is more than one ghost at a time.
After spending 3+ hours getting blue items that are worse than my current gear that I’m wearing at level 30 (the dungeon’s level) and then failing trying to kill the two lovers over and over (not to mention the repair cost), I’m extremely disappointed. I’d like to say I will wait to do the dungeon again, but wait for what? Better gear? higher level? It doesn’t seem like that will help.
There is absolutely nothing before this dungeon that has prepared me, a new player, for this. I feel like the game goes from easy, casual solo questing to slightly harder world event bosses to crazy insane, impossible dungeon.
I’m sure it’s a lot easier if you can find a group that knows what they’re doing, but what’s the point of that? It’s sad that I can’t just join a group of fellow noobs and attempt the first dungeon in the game together, learning as we go. Instead it was just a frustrating waste of time.
The point of my post is that I hope ArenaNet can address this issue. So many other people have already posted valid points on why exactly these dungeons are so hard, but I just wanted to give my experience as a new player for perspective. Overall feeling from dungeon experience: super disappointed.
