Ok. I acknowledge that is not what SAB skins are. So according to your definition of prestige, they are not prestigious. I’m ok with that. Regardless of my definition or your definition, a lot of people get happy feelings from them. THAT is really all I personally care about. Not the nomenclature.

That’s fine, and I totally am also happy that people enjoy them (more power to them), I just wish there were some item that you could show off that, when people see it, makes them say “Wow that guy is a boss at jump puzzles”. You know, for people like me.

No, especially when words in said dictionary definition are entirely subjective and open to interpretation. “Success” “Achievement” “Respect” can mean different things to different people.

I do agree that they can be interpreted in different ways, but the connotations of those words are pretty generally accepted and commonplace. I’m not sure if maybe we’re from different countries or if there’s a cultural barrier here that’s inhibiting our ability to understand one another (and if so I apologize). I’ve read a lot of texts on philosophy and linguistics and while I don’t consider myself an ‘expert’ (my degrees aren’t in philosophy and linguistics after all), I make sure to stay pretty well-informed.

That said, in lieu of the fact that you’re vehemently opposing me ad nauseum, I will edge out of this discourse. It’s not productive, and clearly neither of us is any less stubborn than the other, and so this is going nowhere. Good day.

I can appreciate wanting people to be prepared. There’s always the risk that something can go bad and you’ll get a terrible, cruel, or otherwise abysmal group. Sometimes I have to kick players out of a run I’m doing because they are downright bad, and their badness prevents us from succeeding because that specific path of whatever cannot be 4-manned properly. I feel bad in those cases, but I know that it is exactly what the functionality is for. I then find someone else and move on with the path.

It’s important to not expect everything to be peaches and cream when working with other people, and more than anything is that a life lesson than something specific to games, or even GW2.

Match Quiting to Preserve Ratio(TPVP)

The bigger concern is that if someone leaves a match, it not only hurts their rating, but makes the match lopsided and will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the other members of their once-team. I don’t like the notion of a solo-queue player hurting the ratings of other players simply as a form of griefing (this happens).

I don’t appreciate that your retort to everything I’ve said has repeatedly been “it’s your opinion” (and I especially don’t appreciate being called stubborn; I’m only trying to elucidate my point). My opinion is that the skins are not valuable to me because they’re not prestigious. Prestigious, as I am using it, is dictionary-defined and objective; it has nothing to do with my opinion, and represents the achievements that were earned to get the item in question. The value of the items is a personal thing, and is thus subjective. So what is my opinion is whether or not I care for them, what isn’t my opinion and is an objective quality of the item is what those items mean based on the achievements needed to acquire them.

And to some people, “being there” is an achievement.

You’re right! Being there is an achievement! But because you can buy the items on the store, no one will know if you were there or bought it instead and weren’t there. That reduces the prestige of the item because there’s no way for someone else to know. Maybe you (or whoever) don’t care about that, and that’s fine (looking cool for looking cool’s sake is also, go figure, cool).

To others, having enough money to purchase incredibly rare things is is their own form of success.

Yup, right again! Having the money to buy items that are valuable to you is a great form of success! However, being able to buy the item in question reduces the prestige of the item. Imagine that you could send money to the president to have him formally award you a medal of honor. That would belittle the achievements and sacrifices of those other people who earned it because now you could say “Oh you could’ve just bought that”. A prestigious item IRL is like the medal of honor, and it just so happens that prestigious items tend to be rare, and thus, more valuable. Items like a Mustang are valuable, but not prestigious.

You have your own definition of “prestige” and “rarity.” That’s fine.

But in the end, prestige is in the eyes of the beholder. Different people hold different views of what prestige is. To some, rarity is prestige.

No, actually, prestige is in the dictionary as primarily relating to achievements or successes (although to some extent is influenced by something’s value). Value is also in the dictionary, and the rarity of something absolutely and unequivocally changes its value. Just because something is rare doesn’t make it prestigious, but because something is rare does make it valuable.

(P.S. I’m not being pedantic or degrading, I’m being serious; these terms have been used forever and ever and ever in real life and in games to describe items)

I have never had any of the bad things you mentioned in the OP happen to me, and I’ve done so many dungeon runs, both PUG and otherwise, of so many different paths and dungeons that it might make your eyes bleed.

I am not convinced in the least that your experiences represent the norm. Rather, the reality is that countless thousands of people play these instances daily without a hitch (maybe they succeed, maybe they fail, but they aren’t cruel to each other), and any assorted percent of them could be pubs or friend-groups. The number of instances of people complaining about this sort of thing on the forum is a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the population, and is most certainly not something ANet needs to act specifically on.

Of course people still do that, but not because they’re prestigious, only because they’re rare. Josh is mixing up prestige with rarity. Prestigious items are of a certain quality, and say a certain thing about the person who wields them. WoW had a lot of prestige items (for better or worse) because there were tons of items that were gated behind tons of content. You knew when you looked at a person the feats he had accomplished to get what he was wearing. That is prestige. SAB skins do not have that because, so long as you’re willing to pay whatever the premium is, you too can look like you participated in the SAB, even if you don’t actually know what it is. That’s paying for rarity, and it has nothing to do with prestige.

Countless players exist for prestige in MMOs; it’s what they seek. I like to wear my successes on my sleeve for all to see, personally, and I always value things that showcase a ton of skill. Being able to buy them devalues it and ruins any prestige that thing ever might have had, regardless of its monetary value due to its scarcity.

I would hope that in 3 years, some guy with his SAB scepter is feeling that way about it.

Likely not, since that same guy could have, that day, shelled out whatever the gold cost is for the item and gotten it all the same. If you want limited edition stuff that “you had to be there to get”, you can’t make it purchasable on the TP. If you want prestigious things that showcase “you did this and have great skill / dedication”, you can’t make it purchasable on the TP. If you’re going to have them purchasable on the TP, you may as well have them come back down the road because the prestige simply won’t be there regardless.

I don’t care for any of the SAB skins because having one says nothing about my ability to complete the content or be exceedingly good at it or whatever. Meanwhile, I have hunted so many Fractal skins that you’d probably be shocked. Those Fractal skins carry prestige, while the SAB skins never will thanks to them being purchasable on the TP.

You also have to consider the animation challenge of having a Dragon’s model “get enraged, run around, stomp on players, go into the air, land in a different position, roar, chase players”. That’s at a minimum a month of work for the animation designers alone, per dragon. Is it worth locking those guys up for a month and keeping them from other work? Probably not. Consider the priorities of the team and the needs of the game.

If it’s any comfort to you guys, 90-95% of the folks who end up in EB in a week are militia. The only time you’ll really see organised guild groups from us in there are when they really need the extra hands. We do know and accept that as far as EB goes, if we do well, it’s usually because of extremely competent commanding and management of militia and/or sheer numbers.

Our entire server right now is essentially militia and we have no major WvW-only guilds, only some guilds that often do WvW in smaller groups working together. [Kiwi], [KT], [SBI], and a few others have good showings, but they always lead the militia, they don’t run exclusively as a guild in huge numbers.

I liked the way someone else from SBI put it in a previous week’s match-up when he said we’re a pub server.

Well to be honest, several times I’ve seen SoS and SbI run away from our minuscule 15-man(woman) zerg even tho they outnumbers us.

Oftentimes players mistake “We have more important things to do” for “We are running away from your group”. Because it’s a 3-way server war, sometimes you need to just avoid an engagement with one enemy that isn’t threatening at the moment to handle a more pressing attack by the other.

Also, are there any SoS or SBI that would be interested in a fight night tomorrow night, myself and a few guildies are itching for some 1v1s and haven’t had an organized fight night since SoS moved down.

I would be down depending on the time. Thursdays are better for me personally because Wednesdays are my guild’s mission nights.

It’s a design aesthetic. A lot people want prestige items which means limiting them. You can limit items by making the amount of time/resources required to get them very large, or you can limit them having them in for a limited time only. We could make every item easy to attain and permanently available, but then we lose the prestige factor. If you don’t value the prestige factor, then no arguments are going to make you understand. It would be like arguing someone into liking heavy metal or kimchi. Personally, I don’t particularly value the prestige factor, but I understand that it is a HUGE motivating force that drives the engine of the economy.

You’re completely ignoring the type of prestige that people at large like and the type of prestige that they don’t.

  • First Group: Skill/Time-Investment Prestige Rewards Players like to be able to work their butt off to receive a reward. That makes the reward much more prestigious. The proper way to do this is to make the skins take a lot of time investment and/or skill investment, but make them always attainable; thus the skin showcases the time and skill commitment. This is a very meaningful style of prestige because no matter what, players always know the commitment you had to invest in order to receive the rewards, and they look and feel cooler as a result.
  • Second Group: Item is No Longer Available Rewards Players like to be able to get easy-to-obtain rewards that say “I was there”. That players can no longer receive them gives them some measure of prestige. The real problem here is that these things take an obscene amount of storage space without some kind of locker dedicated to them because as time goes on, so too do the number of things you can no longer acquire. Furthermore, this type of prestige leads players to seek items they don’t even want just so they don’t “miss out” if they do ever want them down the road. This leads to packrat syndrome, and generally isn’t as valuable or meaningful as the first type (you just had to be there, it really doesn’t indicate that it is very meaningful)
  • Making an item able to be sold and bought is a fast way to ruin any type of prestige because then it becomes a matter of farming some gold and just buying it, and has no real prestige associated with it at all. This completely ruins the value of an item as a measure of skill, time, or “being there” when it was released.

SAB dropped the ball on multiple fronts here if they actually wanted prestigious items with a properly laid out system to support a limited-time release of items.

What someone defines as fun is often different from what another person calls fun. I’m sorry our dungeon work has not appealed to you and others, but there is an audience for what we do. My hope is that in the future, we can build something that appeals to you and other folks currently not on board with our dungeon content, while still staying true to the people who have enjoyed our content thus far. Bridging that gap is not an easy process, but I am confident that such things are not impossible feats

I enjoy dungeons at large, but the major things I don’t like include:

  • Massive HP sinks from bosses that are genuinely unthreatening (including FotM Svanir boss, HotW bosses, and tons more across dungeons)
  • Poor rewards for most dungeons, incentivizing players to spam CoF 1 for efficiency rather than spread out and do other content in the game
  • Trash being trash. Everything should have significantly less life, significantly better loot than it currently does in later parts of a path (to prevent early part farming), and be significantly more threatening. This would up the fun-factor ten fold.

And some other stuff. New AC is cool, but I never do it because there’s no good reason to. The rewards are bleh, CoF is better, AC has no lodestones or anything, has only one good armor set stat combo, and is otherwise just not worth it. I ran it a few times just to learn it and steamroll it, and yeah, haven’t run it again since.

Berserker > everything else

While this is true, the percent increase a player sees from a flat increase of 875 power is actually dependent on what their current stats are. A condition damage Necro has only 900 or so Power normally, so a boost of 875 is nearly a 100% increase in their power-based damage output (which is surprisingly plentiful for necros even when using condition builds) while they can take advantage of their other benefits, and that’s just one example. That said, I agree that a Berserker, while getting less % bonus damage, still benefits ‘equally’.

Berserker has crit dmg which sees increasement from might stacks as well.

This would make for an interesting optimization problem. If I were more interested in the math than playing the game, I might work it out myself.

Dear Dungeon Thieves

Rising Dusk.2408

Movementspeed is useless in instances, because all encouters can be mastered by smart positioning and well-timed dodges. Let’s assume the thief is hitting Subject Alpha in melee. Why would he need additional movement speed? Subject Alpha doesn’t kite players. Let’s assume the thief is fighting Giganticus Lupicus from range. Why would he need additional movement speed? Every dodge or shortbow 3 brings you in safety.

There’s no great idea behind Signet of Shadows/Signet of Air. Most players use these skills out of laziness. To me, it’s a dead slot that could be used to help you and your group.

I disagree with you, and here is why. Many skills used by enemies, projectiles in particular, can be dodged simply by moving. The faster you are, the closer you can be to the enemy and still dodge these skills factoring in the width of the projectile. Here, I even did the math for you; by moving 25% faster, you can be 20% closer to the attacking enemy and still walk-dodge the skill (particularly relevant for your example in GL!). This is even more relevant if you strafe back-and-forth to dodge a projectile skill, because by moving faster you throw the attack further off center, reducing the percent chance the enemy actually hits you in between your strafes (I tried doing this analytically but it resolves to a complex trigonometric function I’d need to numerically determine, yuck). A good example of where this is really valuable is when you’re trying to melee the Grawl boss in Fractals on a high level like 48, where increased movement speed translates directly to a more accessible melee target without hurting your own ability to dodge its arrows. And thus, by being able to dodge without expending a dodge or skill (or initiative in the Thief’s case), you save those dodges and skills for when you really need them

tl;dr: I’ve mathed this out and it’s legitimately valuable if you know how to use it properly in combat situations against specific enemy types, including certain bosses. If your team is not doing a lot of moving for a specific event, needless to say it isn’t valuable and you should change utilities (good players do this anyway).

right but these dmg buffs are not more effective when used by berserkers, 25 stacks of might is giving everyone 875 power regardless of your stacks.
Aoe precision as well.
however healing is more effective the more dmg reduction there is

Im not implying or saying that offensive buffs are worthless, im just saying they effect everyone pretty linearly, whereas the effectiveness of healing at mitigation when toughness is high is not linear. therefore, i dont think toughness really needs to be more effective at all.

Why are Condition Builds < Berzerker

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

I think there are maybe two exceptions to this that are noteworthy.

Rabid Undead rune Necromancer Builds
This is ideally suited for a Necromancer in PvE for many reasons, notably that toughness converts into a greater condition dps, doubles as a defensive stat, precision boosts the already significant chance to bleed on hit, and condition damage is self-explanatory.

Rampager Engineer Condition Damage Builds
Due to the mid-range nature of the Engineer and the fact that its P/P weapon set has access to every single one of the damaging conditions in the game, it actually sees an exceptional return on condition damage, and can do a significant amount of damage without much loss from having no defensive stats. It also picks up a lot from traits that add damaging conditions on crits, much like the Necromancer does.

Outside of these, I don’t think PvE builds really get much out of condition damage. Having tried both, I can say with absolute certainty that a berserker Ranger is worlds better than a trap condition damage ranger in PvE. There are other cases I’ve tried as well with similar results.

It’s also worth noting that because everyone has a taboo against condition damage in many groups, you’ll find fewer players utilizing it, and thus run a significantly reduced chance of hitting the stack cap frequently. Call it the silver lining, I suppose.

It may be late for ESTers, but it means people in PST get to start at 6PM, which is just-after-work time. It’s probably the best compromise, and I’m willing to deal with it for the good of the game.

Thanks for working on this Devon (and team), we really appreciate it.

12) You cannot have bank access in the mists because anyone can port there for free.

I do this every day in WvW, and anyone can port there and then go back to wherever they were. Please let us do it in the mists as well.

Rising Dusk.2408

According to this page GW1 was released on the 28th of April:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars

According to this one, GW1 was released on the 26th of April:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars

And according to this topic, GW1 was released on the 22th of April.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

GW1 also had a head-start option for people who preordered if memory serves. It really has been a long time, but I remember my first time playing GW1 post-beta was on the weekend of its release (which corresponds to the 22nd of April, 2005).

I hope the rest of EMP sticks it out with JQ and continues kicking butt and doing good things. I wish those who left well, but in my opinion, the guild is better served without them. I’m close friends with some members of the guild (who I will not call out), and I’ve got to say that this ‘culling’ of sorts may end up with a stronger EMP than before.

There is a full zerker thief I run FotM 48 with whenever she’s around, and she’s incredible. Most of the time she spends it at range, except the few instances where the enemies are so stupid that she can wail on them in melee range for absurd damage (like the svanir boss, who is a total loser). It really is a tricky class, but it has an exceedingly high return if you’re particularly talented at it.

essentially my research shows it really isnt that much more effective, and as far as inter player synergy, toughness is more effective
(since multiple people can heal, but people generally cant increase others dmg in any stat based way.

Be mindful that there are traits that specifically do this, and there are also boosters such as banners, spirits, and so forth. Furthermore, aoe might stacks boost dps stats appreciably. My anchor Guardian runs a very defensive setup, and yet does quite respectable damage with a perma 16 stacks of might up at a minimum that she can maintain on the entire group.

I guess Gunnbbang was the charr kiwi commander in sos borderlands before, boom 4 superior rams and took sunny, nice entrace to the map, was nice to see some late night action, I dc’d after they left bay so not sure how things went from there.

You can always pick Gunbbang out of the crowd because his Charr has a bright pink mohawk.

Well, hopefully we cleared out the siege you wanted us to, SoS, when we took your EB keep yesterday. We swept and burned a lot of siege down, but nothing that seemed particularly useless or like it would’ve siege capped the area. I don’t know who is siege capping you, but I know that SBI as a whole doesn’t endorse it, and neither do any of our guilds/commanders support such activities. Was a good fight regardless.

All in all, good fights all around this weekend. Even if our overnight coverage really sucks, I enjoy having you guys (CD / SoS) in this tier. It makes for an enjoyable experience, and a lot of wxp when we get to take our crap back after you sweep it all out every morning.

Wanna give out some props to two of the newer Kiwi commanders I have been running with lately. I know I am gonna get their names horribly wrong but its the Asura mesmer, Seakin? and Charr guardian Gunnab? who have shown great movement and tactics in leading our zergs on different maps. Great job to both of you!!

You’re thinking of Saekin and Gunbbang, and yeah they’ve been helping out a lot.

If it’s a bug, how come it hasn’t been fixed yet? It can’t be too hard to fix, just copy that part of code from some other legendary.

If only programming and developing a massive piece of software were ever this easy.

I don’t run AC any more because CoF is more profitable for my time ever since they added the bags of wondrous goods to dungeons.

This whole “zerker is better than everything” is mostly true for PvE content that is predictable and knowable, but unless you’re a thief or a ranger, you really ought not to be running berserker in WvW. When I fight berserker Warriors or Guardians I cringe as my auto-attack is shaving off 1/10 of their hp per hit and my chain hits 6 times. Burning their elites and heals in the first few seconds of battle before they’ve even dealt 1/3 of my life in damage because of my damage mitigation.

As a commander, running pure berserker gear would be suicide. Until you’ve been there, you don’t realize how many thieves will sit on the sidelines of every battle, tab through the enemies to find the commander, and focus them above all else.

This all said, for PvE most of my classes are glass cannons depending on the group. If I’m the only melee in a group, I will bring out my WvW armor sets so that I’m a bit bulkier, because my being an anchor will help the other berserker ranged players do more damage with less worry. Remember what I just said; an anchor enables others to dps better and unfettered. You might think that your damage mitigation is all awesome and that you’re a beast dodger, but in many instances it’s not about dodging or mitigating every attack because you simply can’t. In those instances, you need to dodge specific key attacks and soak others and then sustain the hits with healing and team support. The supreme example of this is the Grawl boss in L48 fractals; do it without any supporting characters and you’ll find that you need every player to be absolutely perfect at absolutely every moment, and that you will be completely unable to do it with pugs at all, period. Those anchors make the runs much, much, much easier, and allow Warriors and Thieves and Rangers and Engineers and whatever to do far more damage by comparison (plus you’d be amazed at how well my anchor Guardian stacks might on the team).

tl;dr: If you’re thinking only about yourself, run Berserker. If you want to better learn the subtleties of coordinated groups that actually do runs faster than your 5 berserker group can, practice being an anchor, and you’ll see what good Toughness, Vitality, Healing Power, and other such stats can do.

Thank God for an auto-attack. I’d hate to be able to do nothing while I wait for my more powerful skills to come off of cooldown. That said, the combat of GW2 kicks butt, and I wouldn’t want a thing about it changed.
