Fractal skin RNG is disgusting

Rising Dusk.2408

Looks similar to mine, except I have 3 hammers and 2 daggers, have done hundreds of 48 runs, and haven’t yet gotten the Scepter I want. Meanwhile, my friend (who wants a hammer) has gotten 3 scepters. Funny, eh?

I’m not mad and, as a matter of fact, I’m glad that it’s so hard to get the one I want. It drives me to keep trying. It gives me something to work toward in order to keep playing it (I also enjoy FotM, but it’s nice having some kind of physical goal as well). FotM rewards are so abysmal by any standards that if I could have just traded 12 skins in for what I wanted, I’d probably have been done ages ago. That it’s so hard to get what I want is a good reason for me to keep trying, and means that when I do get it, it’ll be that much sweeter.

If it wasn’t worth it to you, you wouldn’t still be doing it. As a result, even if you’re bitter that you haven’t gotten what you wanted, you’ll keep pushing for it. Now imagine when you get the dagger you want. That feeling is something you’ll remember for a long time. That’s what these skins are for, that feeling, that journey.

Keep trying, and good luck.

More Skimpy Armor Please? [Merged]

in Suggestions

Rising Dusk.2408

My guess is what he is actually saying is, 90% (here he made up a number) of the females he sees are wearing skimpy armor. Which makes the point, if a large percent of the females you see are wearing skimpy armor which is a small percent of the choices available then that tells you what people want more of.

This would be a zero-value statistic even if ANet itself polled it because it’s skewed by circumstance. Many of the skimpy armors in-game are low-level and therefore lack detail. I would hazard that it is likely that even people who like skimpy armor may not wear those because they either “look cheap” or “look bad”. Furthermore, many of the high-end armors for certain race combinations are skimpy, and sometimes people who don’t like skimpy armor use them simply because they “cost a lot” or “have high detail”.

In my opinion, everyone should have what they want. There should be more high-end and low-end covering and skimpy armor sets alike, and players should never feel funneled one way or the other by ANet’s designs.

There really needs to be a -1 button for threads like this.

Fighting prejudice with more prejudice is absolutely abominable. Why don’t you consider doing something actually valuable for the community and start groups that allow anyone to join, rather than picking and choosing and being a part of the very problem you complain about?

They should just make this a combination of burst recharge rate and +% adrenaline per strike. So at 30 points, you’d get 1.3 strikes per hit instead of 1 strike per hit and your cooldown would be 7 seconds. This would be useful for all bursts (including condition damage ones), and would specifically consider the class mechanic better.

I don’t understand the problem here. You have gold and nothing to spend it on because you constantly earned gold with no end in sight. It’s like a friend of mine who does absolutely nothing in the game except farm CoF p1, and then complains that he hates having nothing he wants.

If you’re that desperate to do something with your gold, hold some contests or whatever. You could also send me 500g; I could finish everything I want in the game with that, and that’d be exciting.

Stormbluff Isle! You caught my interest immediately, haha!

Actually, what really caught my interest was your attitude, your innate ability to spell and properly punctuate your sentences, and the fact that you’re just hitting 80 and looking to explore the end-game content. That all sounds like a perfect fit, and so definitely give us some thought before making your mind up elsewhere!

[VZ] is a medium-sized, PvX (WvW / PvE) guild on the Stormbluff Isle server. We’re primarily end-game players, and we have many dungeon masters and L48+ Fractals players in our guild. We do guild events weekly, which will help you get your ascended gear quicker, and we are working on researching more (always, just takes influence and time). We’re okay with people who aren’t versed in end-game content, because we enjoy teaching and explaining, so long as you’re willing to learn. Furthermore, we use the SBI TeamSpeak (not required, but recommended), which lets us flip back-and-forth to the official SBI channels for WvW if we’re doing that (I command periodically, and am a pretty decently-known player there regardless). We also have groups doing TPvP pretty regularly, and are always looking for people interested in that (If that’s your thing, no requirements).

We also do a lot more, and we’re a pretty close group of pals. If you’re curious, I encourage you to click the link in my signature to read more, and PM me here or in-game if you have any questions or if you’re interested at all (I hope you are).

Regardless of how it turns out, I hope you find what you’re looking for in a guild. It really helps a lot, and makes the end-game and GW2 at large a lot more enjoyable. Cheers, and hopefully I’ll hear from you!

Hi there! New to the Game

in Guilds

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

My advice would be to start playing without a guild and you’ll eventually run across a group of people you enjoyed playing with. Then ask for an invite. That way you know you get along with them beforehand and don’t have to deal with the mass recruiters.

There will always be mass recruiters, I agree, but there are also some good guilds on the forums just looking for more people. The real challenge is separating, as a user looking for a guild, the meat-grinders of people from the tighter-knit communities. A lot of that comes from first impressions, but a lot of that comes from just talking with the people recruiting, too!

Now, Raelivan, I’m curious about a few things first. What server are you on? What sort of content do you imagine you’ll like down the road (are you typically a PvPer, PvEer, or might you prefer organized large group content (WvW) more? The answers to those will help people know if you’re a good fit or not.

I will introduce you to my guild, and then let you decide as you will if it fits what you’re looking for. My guild, [VZ], is a medium-sized PvX (WvW / PvE) guild on the Stormbluff Isle server. We have many experts in the game, and yet also many people still fairly new and willing to learn. I make it a point to teach people willing to learn in all walks of the game (PvP, WvW, and PvE). We have many dungeon masters in the guild, and many L48+ Fractals players too (that’s a high-end progression-based dungeon). We also do guild events weekly, so you get to run around with us in a larger scale way if that interest you. We prefer people to be on our server so we can actually get influence from them, but since you’re new to the game you can delete all of your characters (if you’ve even made any yet) and move to another server for free. That is up to you, though, but I totally recommend it before you get too invested in your characters. We’re big on doing end-game content primarily (It’s what the guild does!), and are willing to help teach anyone that end-game content. We’re also great for answering questions about the game that you have along the way as you level-up.

If you’re curious, check out the link in my signature to read more about the specifics of the guild. Furthermore, I encourage you to PM me here or in-game and I’d be happy to talk to you further, and get answers to any of your questions. Regardless, I hope you find a good guild to play with; it makes the game that much more enjoyable.

Ack, I’m sorry to hear that. Honestly, in the long-run, it’s better to take it slightly easier and not risk burning out. I’ve long-since learned not to get up in arms over our lack of coverage during EU – if anyone from SEA was still up feeling like they needed to stay up and help, I’d tell them to get their kitten to bed already. You just have to do the best you can with what you’ve got and leave it at that.

Yup, we know. It’s all good, and we don’t really mind all that much. We kick butt with what we’ve got and that’s all we can ask of anyone. I have to admit, however, that our server has gotten a lot more close and tight-knit as a result, and it’s actually been a lot more fun these days than it was back in T1. That’s just me, though.

pretty much Spiteful Spirit from GW1. This condition would actively force enemies to play smart about their positioning.

I also like the idea of a condition that prevents any conditions from being removed, but I feel that it’s so immensely powerful that it wouldn’t be balanced with significant uptimes, and would unfortunately not really do much if it were just an active skill play. Boon Hate: Bad for WvW Support?

in WvW

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

Aha.

That gives the Warrior a 5 second window to not only break your Aegis, but also take advantage of the boons you have. If you use something like LR, or Sword evades, or any of the number of the things the Ranger can use to avoid that follow-up hit, then you’re fine. The key is that it comes down to who outplays who in those 5 seconds.

Boon Hate: Bad for WvW Support?

in WvW

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

It punishes certain builds in insanely silly ways while the worst OP Buffs are still OP.

Aegis is arguably strengthened by this implementation as it will block all damage from an attack and disappear. Protection is still far and away a net gain.

But Traits that grant Vigor on Dodge? Lingering Group Swiftness? Micro-duration Boons like Mesmer Staff 1?

Not to mention what this does to Elites like the Ranger’s Rampage as One…

Remember that with, for example, RaO, that’s +9% damage, which requires 30 points in Discipline, meaning that the Warrior can’t have 30 in the Strength and Arms trait lines any more (which have +10% damage traits, mind you). The reality is that except against heavily boon-fortified foes, this will be a wash and not wind up making a big difference.

Boon Hate: Bad for WvW Support?

in WvW

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

This means with boon-hate we will end up with a mechanic much like confusion (or retaliation): something that punishes you for just playing the game. Against boon-hate heavy builds the solution will be to stop attacking them with skills that have finishers, or stop using skills that make fields.

I disagree with this assessment because it is very different. In order for boon hate to do anything, the Warrior must be able to take advantage of it. If you blast your friend’s light field and get Retaliation, you’re not punished for it; the Warrior still has to engage and strike you repeatedly to benefit from it. In this case, the Warrior is capitalizing on your setup if he actually can, much like how boon stealing on the Mesmer works. The key difference here is that confusion and retaliation put the onus on you to stop taking actions, rather than putting the onus on your opponent to engage and strike you.

RtL change doesn't make sense.

in Elementalist

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

I don’t think the ‘math’ in the OP really represents anything meaningful. For the Warrior to achieve what is shown he is locked into two specific weapons (none of the skills of which are stunbreakers, btw), and you’re completely forgetting that Rush and Whirlwind Attack are both affected by things like Cripple and Chill, whereas RtL is not. The ranger example provided is awkward because they have to flip their camera, and even with the hotkey for it, sometimes it isn’t as responsive as it needs to be for purposes of this sort of speed movement. And while I won’t disagree that the Thief is pretty mobile, it’s supposed to be the most mobile, so that’s not a problem.

I think there were probably better solutions to nerfing RtL, such as making it factor in things like Chill and Cripple (like Warrior GS Rush), but what you also need to consider is that the Elementalist and Warrior are very different beasts altogether. One gets 10 skills across 2 weapon sets, and the other gets 20 skills across 4 attunements. I think ANet also clearly intends RtL to be more useful for engaging than escaping, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and this change moves it more in that direction. We just need to adjust our own perceptions of what the Ele can and should achieve in response to this change, and I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as it sounds.

Treb Shots now being unblockable.

in WvW

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

I think this is a good thing because what will matter more in a treb / counter-treb situation is how well your treb user can hit the other, not how big a group they had (and thus how many swirling winds or guardian bubbles they could employ). This rewards good play, and rewards large group size less, and thus is a step in the right direction.

Boon Hate: Bad for WvW Support?

in WvW

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

  • The boon hate trait will require a 30 point investment in Discipline, which very, very few Warriors can afford to do because it severely cuts into necessary investments for builds elsewhere.
  • The discipline line for Warriors has an awful secondary stat booster, which reduces the net effectiveness of a Warrior investing into it (+3% burst damage with 30 point investment)
  • The warrior still suffers from a lack of sustainability in small-scale matches, and melts under pressure if Endure Pain / Shield Stance are not up in zerg combat

Honestly, I don’t think it will make a big difference at all, and your worry is for naught.

Rising Dusk.2408

You guys sound like a lot fun, and I really like that you’re kind of casual players (but want to play well), so I’ll put this here in case you’re interested.

[VZ] is a medium-sized PvX guild on the Stormbluff Isle server. We’re primarily PvE players, and we’re a really casual guild. That said, even though we’re casual, we make it a point to be some of the best players around at what we do; we smash up every dungeon in the game from AC to Arah to Fractals L48. Furthermore, in case my signature weren’t making it obvious enough, I WvW with the guild a lot and lead a bit here and there time permitting. We also have guild bounties and treks, and do them weekly. Furthermore, we’re in the EST time zone, so we’re not that far off from you and your time zone would mesh well with the time zone that we primarily play in. We also have voice chat, and recommend that, but it’s not required (a big thing for the guild in my opinion is no requirements or mandatory things, so that the player has as much freedom as possible). We’re also really friendly with people who aren’t total pros, and we’re more than happy to talk you through harder instances, give you tips, and help you improve if you’re willing (hopefully you are!).

Anyway, if you’re interested at all, check out the link in my signature for more information, and please send me a mail in-game or on the forums! I’d be happy to talk with you about it.

That said, regardless of what happens, good luck finding the guild you’re after! It helps a lot!

Pugging guild missions?

in Guilds

Posted by: Rising Dusk.2408

Rising Dusk.2408

  • You can get rewards by guesting to another server and doing a mission with them, but they get nothing from having you (your influence won’t help them unless you’re on their server already)
  • Lots of guilds do this, but usually the people who come along never represent and make the guild look scattered, so it’s not necessarily a good thing
  • My guild does this with people who need it, but it’s important to have as many or more actual representing players than guests or the guild sort of loses focus
  • There is a subreddit for this here that you can find guilds doing this on

tl;dr: This helps the players more than it helps the guilds, and while it sounds like a good way to grow, really doesn’t help the guild grow at all unless they get really lucky with people from their own server. I do it with my guild more because I feel bad for smaller guilds that can’t do their missions, since I was there with my guild before I started putting a lot of effort into recruiting and expanding.

Good luck with it.

People are forgetting that you have to invest 30 into discipline to get boon hate, which is arguably too much investment for the return. You’d be missing out on a lot of much better traits in the first two lines by doing that. Reality is that this will change nothing until they make the secondary boost for the Discipline line something useful (+3% burst damage is laughable).

While they’re at it, they’re going to need to make the Versatile Power minor trait more useful. 1 stack of Might on weapon switch is downright unfortunate.

Harder content should reward better rewards. The risk vs reward for FotM at high levels is impossibly bad, and needs to be improved no matter how you cut it. I agree that low levels shouldn’t get the boost, but as you go up tiers, the rewards really should improve significantly from what they are.

Or the person Mossman decided he really didn’t like and chain threw axes at.

And hey, sometimes people can surprise you with their tenacity, too. Have you ever been in Volcanic where 3 people go down to the legendary shaman, and 1 person drags the shaman away from the corpses and holds it while the other works on ressing? That’s some serious teamwork and skill.

I always feel amazing when I do that. It’s one of the things I live for against bosses, and is probably one of the reasons that boss is right up there with GL in terms of favorite bosses in-game.

You can’t actually interrupt the boss’s skills unless he has 0 stacks of defiant, but the effects of the interrupt are still usually shown regardless (I say usually because for some bosses it’s weird; it’s like each boss’s behavior is unique in some regard). This is especially noticeable with things like Fear (the condition still gets applied so things like Terror still work).

I have already answered the second question. unshakable and defiant stacks are saved and removed when he starts healing, when he gets interrupted or finishes healing, his defiant stacks and unshakable are put back.

It’s easy to say that, but we have no idea if the tech exists for that to even be possible in the boss framework. I have a feeling this is currently not possible in GW2.

all classes have a reasonable amount of cc that can interrupt(fear, knockback, push, daze, stun etc…)

Assuming that’s true (which is fine, but I think there are still huge disparities, with some CC on classes being locked up in otherwise terrible weapons), you still have the issue of faster cast times on some than others. In order for this mechanic you’re suggesting to even be meaningful, it needs to require fast reaction time, otherwise it’s cheesy-easy, but at the same time half the classes have longer windups on their CCs, so it can’t be too short. This really limits either your team composition, or the skill threshold of the mechanic, which ultimately limits how cool it can be.

What class is your main?

Necromancer / Warrior are my two mains.

I also have a Ranger, an Elementalist, a Guardian, an Engineer, a Thief, a Mesmer… Okay I have all of the classes, but the above two are my mains.

boss idea: interruption

I like the way the powersuit / ice ele boss works more because it doesn’t become a class-specific battle where some classes are “bad” because they have fewer accessible interrupts. Anyone can pull the levers, and anyone can interrupt with any damage if he’s superheated.

Lastly, how would any of this work with bosses being unshakable? Defiant stacks would make this sort of thing really dumb (because some class comps couldn’t come up with enough interrupts to knock off all stacks before the dude heals again). We couldn’t just not give him unshakable, either, because he would just get CC chained into next week in that case by tailored teams.

Looking for a Dungeon Guild (or group) [NA]

in Guilds

Rising Dusk.2408

What sort of things are you looking for from a dungeon guild? People on every minute of the day? Hundred-strong sized guild? Smaller, tighter community? Are you willing to transfer? Do you prefer a guild on JQ? Do you care about other things like guild events? These sorts of things are important, and can help guilds gauge whether they think you’d be a good fit for them and conversely whether they think they’d be a good for for you.

My guild, [VZ], is on the Stormbluff Isle server, and we have a pretty great core group of individuals with which we do dungeons pretty regularly. We’re a pretty average-sized guild with about 20 core members, but we have friends from lots of servers that participate in our guild missions (usually 35+ people per event). We’re active, but we have limited schedules, so we’re not bustling at all hours of the day. We mostly work full-time jobs during the days, though, so we’re primarily on EDT evenings on weekdays and all day weekends. We are also PvX, so we do WvW a little bit here and there; I’m personally a commander and lead when I can. We wreck pretty much all content, and don’t care about what class you bring because it really doesn’t matter and we win all the same anyway in a timely and clean manner. Furthermore, if you’re interested, I run FotM 48 virtually every night if I can, and I have a core in-guild (and friends list) group that does it with me. If any of that sounds good, check out the link in my signature for more information and let me know. If not, no worries, and good luck finding what you’re after.

This sounds a lot like the powersuit / ice ele boss in the Dredge Fractal, honestly.

Good job on the bounty everyone! I got home a little late, but it worked out anyway. Got some training done, too, and now we’re about 3/4 done researching Treks, and are well on our way to getting Rushes thereafter.

We could always use more help, though! Representing and active players who like being social are awesome and we need more.

Showstopping bugs should be NUMBER 1 priority

Yeah, this is definitely a bug, but it’s not a showstopper as others above mentioned. If it were actually progress-blocking, it would be higher priority and would probably be fixed by now. As it stands, it’s not a huge deal, just make sure you look up and search for the Krait in the ceiling!

We’re doing the same thing as SBI….trying to train our casuals to be….more hardened. I do desire to move up with SBI. We should go together (if we go anywhere).

I like you; we should kill each other more often.

Rising Dusk,
Don’t get your hopes up too much. Only CO and WM are leaving (allegedly). RISE and a few others are staying on KN so they won’t be any pushover by anyone’s stretch of the imagination.
Not to mention all the former WM and night crew people who might not want to leave or might not want to spend the money.

Unless they have a complete server-wide meltdown, they won’t be any easier to face than us.

I agree with the poster above; I’ve seen it myself all too well with the crashing, the burning, and the bandwagonning away. I definitely won’t count my chickens until they’ve hatched, but I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if KN fell pretty hard. You’ve got to remember where they were before WM and other such guilds stacked them a few months ago.

SoS you better burn the midnight oil and put the hammer on CD and SBI if you hope to move up. With Kain falling down into T3 they probably won’t crush Yaks like DB is doing an then you may not move up for a long while.

I’m personally hoping that Kaineng will fall through T3 pretty quickly, after which SoS and KN will swap places and we’ll maybe have an opponent with a more comparable night force to us (and CD). SoS has been much better (in attitude and match-up) compared with Maguuma, but I think maybe we can do better yet.
