Oh I read quit a bit of it. What it boils down to is that there are a ton of ex-wow players who can’t wrap their minds around the concept of “playing for fun”, not liner character progression through gear stat increases. This is the game I have waited for. I have wanted a game like this since UO. I never liked the idea of gear grinding. I wanted to roam the world, adventure and explore, and most importantly, engage in massive battles without needing to spend countless hours grinding or repeating boring content just so I could compete in PvP. Never again will I play a gear grind (for power) game. I love the vanity increases, but to be honest I just transmuted all my level 80 exotics with the skins of level 30 crafted armor. I am happy with the looks of my Character and I absolutely LOVE that my stats are on equal footing with every other 80 on the battle field. Now I can actually enjoy the game, and look good while I crush the enemy. This game is brilliant.
Coming from Age of Conan, the combat here is a breeze. Learn to dodge.
Yay, another gear grinder post. Why do I enjoy reading the lamentations of the wow-washed so much?
I absolutely love that I am finished gearing up. I dropped some cash for gems, traded them for gold and bought mats on the trader so a friend could craft me my level 80 exotic set. Now I can just WvW and not worry about being “out geared”. In my opinion all item stats should be level in any PvP situation like they are in Spvp. This game has crushed all other MMO’s in that respect. I actually love seeing the gear grinders qq posts too. Finally a game that focuses more on game-play and player skill over item progression. Sweet victory. To those who say " Some of us like item progression, and this game won’t retain us"… I say, it was never designed to retain you. Anet got your money, you can leave now. You won’t be missed, (at least in game). Please continue to stop by the forums to complain though, it gives me the giggles at work.
You don’t, evidently, but you can’t just encourage those sorts of people to just leave the game, else I think you’ll find the game will fail, just like SWTOR did before, for the same basic reason: there was nothing for PvEers to do at cap after a couple of months.
This game was never advertised to be a pve-centered game. PvP was always a major focus for the developers. If all of the pve-ers left and never came back, the game would still be more “successful” than any other mmo that has been released since wow. Have you even seen the numbers? This game is not for pve-grinders. It just isn’t. It never will be. Let it go.
They are “Cat like” beasts.
They’re retractable.. Duh.
“Charr needs no gods” At some point the Charr might encounter a a true god, but they might not accept it as such because they will likely die trying to kill it. Perhaps after a majority of the Charr population is wiped out the survivors might change their tune?
Because the Charr are METAL. That is all.
To be honest, even with max-ish gear (Level 80 crafted exotics) I don’t notice a difference from when I first set foot in WvW. The gear difference is negligible. What matters most is your build and teamwork.
“Without gear 80s would have nothing to work toward…that’s the reason I play MMO’s, I enjoy getting higher numbers.” Then you’re going to be disappointed once you get your level 80 set. Numbers don’t really go up after that. It’s awesome. No more gear grinding just to compete in PvP.
Oh no, the game doesn’t force me to play it like a second job in order to progress… I need to redefine my definition of “fun”…
Yeah, discussing details and tactics on this forum is a great idea….
No… I want them to post. I want them to cry. I want to hear them suffer.
There’s a certain level of primeval satisfaction to be had every time I hear someone complain there’s no gear progression in this game. It’s truly music to my hears. Finally, an MMO that focuses the player experience around fun game-play instead of carrots and sticks. I bought this game for WvW. Huge world battles and sieges. I also love to explore the world. I don’t want or need some “epic loot” dangled in front of my character telling me that I need to grind 1000 hours doing some monotonous aspect of the game in order to get some items that would give me a competitive edge in PvP. If you want wow, go play wow. I hear Kung-fu panda online really appeals to the OP type of MMO player.
Get some skilled friends and roll out in a group. My guild routinely dominates in WvW, often against superior numbers. We’ve successfully defended keeps against 3-1 odds and have taken keeps from larger forces aswell. Even when we’re over run by a zerg, the enemy knows they’ve been in a fight, because the number of downed and dead server mates they end up having to revive almost always totals higher than our entire force.
GW2 has spoiled me and I don’t want to play anything else.
However, I am excited about the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online. IF they do it right, it could be a lot of fun. Plus I miss Morrowind.
I work with someone who worked on Elder scrolls online. It’s has more in common with WOW than it does Skyrim. Traditional (wow type) gameplay, classes and itemization progression systems. If that’s your thing, have a ball.
But the downside is that there seems to be no real gear hunt atm, unless I am missing something. So many people seem to be talking about getting gear for skins only, and that to me isn’t sustainable for the population at large. Imo there needs to be either a gear hunt like in the above mentioned games, or gear progression. And since they already stated there is no gear progression at max level I am guess it comes down to the gear hunt and building up a custom build you can live with and enjoy. That is what I am hoping this game is aiming for anyway, but I am not sure if they have any intention of making gear important at all, or any more interesting than it already is.
The Gear hunt is what killed other MMO’s for me. I like good pve as much as the next guy, but WvWvW is why I bought this game. If they introduce a gear hunt after level cap, all that will do is raise the bar for entry to PvP, and that willkitten allot of people off. Visual upgrades are fine. No stat progression please. Keep PvP about skill, not gear. There’s plenty of other subscription based games with that carrot on a stick model to go to if you don’t like this game. It wasn’t made for gear grinders, and most of us are glad.
Lag would be terrible if everyone’s colors showed. I wish it wasn’t the case, but in a huge battle, the server calls need to be minimized to limit latency issues. Nature of the beast.
With no rewards for winning in WvW, wouldn't it be advantageous to be lowly ranked?

Burn out then. The rewards are good enough as is. If you do not enjoy crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you and hearing the lamentation of their women, this isn’t the game for you. Go get epic lootz somehwere else. Kungfu panda online >>>>
Nope. Once you hit 80, getting better at playing your character should be progression enough. If you want to stand out from the crowd, grind for the exotic armor skins. Stat increases always end up being a balance nightmare and only serve to increase the bar to entry to competitive pvp over time. I want to know that if someone decides to put the game down for a few months or even a year, they can pick it right back up and be just as relevant in WvW as the day they left (assuming they know how to play their class as well).
Sure, and as long as they are purely cosmetic than I hope they add a ton.
I apologize if I sound abrasive, but I am very passionate about this subject and have been waiting for a game like Gw2 when it pertains to skill>gear in pvp. I think I speak for a lot of people when I defend the current design. Ranks, titles, awesome looking skins… I’m all for it. Keep stats out of the pvp progression curve post 80.
Well to be honest, I don’t care about the grear kittens who want their epic carrots on a stick. If you cant appreciate the game for what it is that’s YOUR problem. A-net has your money and will use some of it to make more content, weather or not you decide to stick around. The current rewards (cosmetics) are fine for the core audience this game was sold to. If you’re one of the disappointed bunch that wanted this game to be an epic time sync with carrots on sticks ala-wow, then I for one am happy that you are sad. I have a life, a job and a girlfriend and I don’t plan to spend 20hours a week grinding for stat increases just so I can be competitive in WvW. We (the target audience) want to log in for a few hours at our leisure and feel just as relevant on the battle field as the 15 year old basement dwellers who spend 40+ hours a week in the game. We understand that you want to “stand out from others” based on your achievements, and that’s why you will probably look cooler than many of us, but we can still go toe to toe with you in our noob armor.
Age of Conan started on the right track, but since the game was launched too early it was unable to deliver what was promised to its target audience (skill based pvp) so the money heads of Funcom forced the devs to switch gears and try to stop the financial hemmoraging by revamping the itemization ala wow. Now look at the server populations… The pve cry babies got their gear based progression and grindtastic alternate advancement system, but that didn’t save AOC. However, Gw2 is a far better product than what AOC was at launch, so it’s not likely that it will need “saving” any time soon.
RRRROOROAOOAAAAARAARRRR!!!!!
Of course they want better gear. The wow-heads have been indoctrinated that gear = skill = leetsauce. They want one shot noobs and rub in the fact that they have no life outside of the game and get off on punishing players who aren’t “hardcore” like they are. They want their time playing to be worth more than player skill. Why should someone who just started playing be able to win? DO YOUR TIME!
I just don’t understand the kids these days. Wanting to be rewarded for playing a game… a good game is fun enough that you loose sight of any carrot being dangled in front of you. That model is for games that lack fun game-play. Games should be fun, the experience of playing them should be reward enough. If that’s not the case I feel bad for you. So far this game is a blast, and to be honest I think I got my 60 bucks worth within the first 3 days.
Get a decent guild with mature focused players and your WvW experience will change for the better. I don’t want more powerful items to be the reward for conquering my foes.. Better looking items is just icing on the cake. Call me simple and old fashioned, but winning is enough of a reward for me.
And yet another one who didn’t get the memo. WvW fun, that’s the reward. Fun. Whats the reward for playing a game of basket ball with your friends? Fun. Do you get a new pair of air Jordans for playing? No. Look, if playing the game isn’t fun, and you need a carrot to keep you motivated then you’re broken. This game wasn’t created for you.
Incentive to play a game…. Fun maybe? Others have said it and I will add my pennys to the pile. This game is NOT gear based in PvP. lets keep it that way. It’s one of the reasons the game is doing so well. An MMO aimed at skill based PvP, not that gear grind treadmill that most all other MMOs try to shove down our throats. Age of Conan was supposed to do the same thing, but they chickened out and went the wow way, Now look at the game. 25 people still play it.
Why do people even ask this question? This is a very PvP centered game. If you’re not into PvP why did you come here?
Look this is what it comes down to. What character progression do you have available to you at level 80? The answer is skins, and that is quite simply not enough to keep most people interested, and that is the problem.
Its not what is there to do, its what is there to do that can progress your character.
Character Progression, the staple of RPGs since Dungeons & Dragons pen and paper. Guild Wars 2 does not understand this and really ends up shooting itself in the foot.
This isn’t other RPGs. This is Gw2. If you want more pve content, wait 6 months for another expansion. There is no subscription fee. You got your 60 bucks worth in the first 3 days of play time. The game is aimed at competitive PvP. If you want gear/stats progression you should go play one of various wow clones out there. Skins are just fine as a reward….. Oh wait.. Since when do we need a “reward” for playing a game? Yeah sorry man, that carrot on a stick/gear treadmill is a dead model. This game is for PvPers who want their “character progression” to be in the form of learning how to play the game better. Thank-you for your support.
I sincerely hope that Arena net doesn’t cave into the gear grinding PvE types and makes a bunch of endgame content with tiers of gear. The fact that it only took a few weeks for a few people to become decked out in the best items in the game is great news from a PvP perspective. WvW is my focus, as well as a huge majority of the player base this game was aimed at. If Anet decides to give the grinders what they want, it will force everyone else to grind to be competitive instead of enjoying the game playing how they want… exactly the opposite philosophy we were sold.

As you can see the Intel Pentium Dual Core does better than AMD’s FX-8000 in this game. We all know the bulldozer series didn’t meet expectations but come on; this is just ridiculous. It seems the only way to get decent frames in this game on a bulldozer CPU is overclock it like mad.
From personal experience, I wouldn’t even bother playing with a Phenom II unless you like playing at sub ~30 fps with overclocking. WvW? That’s a whole different story…
Im using a Phenom II x4 3.4ghz 965… Game runs great even in wvw on max settings. I had to update my bios when I upgraded from a athelon 64×2 3.0ghz, but once I did it was flawless.
Maybe it was changed to threaten?
I am Charr.. My name is Roargathor.. Why doesn’t the /Roar emote do anything? It worked during the BWEs. Anyone else notice or care?
Strange as I’m running the game on max with 40+ fps in most areas on a Gtx 285….
What other games have you played with the same rig? Did you get the right drivers? The newest beta drivers supposedly work better than the release version. I got the same crash all the time on my old MOBO/GPU combo while playing Age of Conan for years. New Mobo/cpu fixed it.
I recently upgraded my CPU from a AMD Athelon 64×2 3ghz to an AM3 Phenom II 4x 3.4 ghz and am having no issues. I havn’t changed any other hardware. 8g ddr2 ram and a gtx 285 at max settings, getting 60ish fps in town and 30+ in WvW. Now I did have to update my Bios to accommodate the new CPU, but after that it’s been smooth sailing. A modest GPU can kick this gameskitten the CPU is a bigger factor.
