Fractals killed WvW on many servers because so many players feel compelled to grind for Ascended gear. Huge mistake. This game was the go to for PvP. Now it’s a joke.
Grief is received not given. You were in a PvP zone. Your jumping puzzle means nothing out in WvW. If you want badges, go get them the old fashioned way and kill some enemy players. THAT’S the main purpose of the border lands. I’m sorry, was that “A juvenile response”? THIS IS GUILD WARS!!!! Not Jumping Puzzle Pals. My eyes hurt from reading such high levels of stupid on this thread.
Having a hard time understanding why gear treadmill is such a bad thing. yes the extent that WoW took it to an extreme level, where simply a new set would raise for an example your HP by 25 -33%.
But without numbers getting higher I and most of my friends playing GW2 wont be able to stick around for long ( yes i know its a drop in and out game = no sub). And as mentioned, in other post, the amount of players left in the MMO market. that only care for “cosmetics” are getting fewer and fewer, due to the fact that they do not cover up the bigger part of the marketshare. Therefore they will have to make drastic changes if they want to keep the game alive.
Sidenote; I myself was totally convinced that looks would only matter in “endgame” for me, but now am having a hard time doing anyting, since i have no reason to do a dungeon more the once for the achivement, no reason to quest since the rewards more or less bad, and the “whine” goes on.
xardrion.4607 uses Flameshield against “traditional-mmo hate bandwagoners”……..
Its super effective!
Most of the people who came to GW2 did so because of the “innovations” it advertised. No gear treadmill was a big selling point. WvW was another HUGE one, but since it’s currently broken, and the addition of Ascended gear, it’s no wonder the player base is shrinking. from a PvP perspective, Item centric progression is a terrible thing and should be eliminated from all modes of PvP in MMOs from here on out.
Anet has been very clear that WvW uses PvE stats and gear…
Yeah well since they had no problem introducing more vertical progression with the ascended garbage, I don’t see why they can’t just make gear/levels not matter in WvW like it is in Spvp. That would fix allot of issues.
Ego.
Admitting that the current implementation of Wv3 is poor would hurt a developers ego. It would take a very big man to admit that their vision of Wv3 has failed or could have been better implemented.
-K
They had the balls to admit their implementation of Ascended gear was wrong and they planned make it available through other modes besides FOTM. They are bending to the will of someone higher up. NCSOFT is probably pressuring Anet to cave in to the “Working model” (Gear treadmill) over innovative game-play. The same thing happened to Age of Conan. When Funcom Failed to deliver on their initial promises for skill based PvP, combined with bugs and incomplete content, the game was hemorrhagic players, so the money heads demanded they switch gears and WOWify the game in order to retain what players they could. It was an epic fail. If they had stayed the course and kept item stats out of PvP, the game would still have more than 25 players. I can see Gw2 going down the same road, and I will be here to say “I told you so” when the first round of server merges come 3 months from now.

I’m so kitten right now… I transferred to Heng of Denravi the other night so I could play with my GF who just got the game.. The rest of the servers were full…. Now I’m stuck there for 5 more days…. Great timing Anet.
Good luck with that. I have been watching the server list like a hawk for the last 3 days… It hasn’t budged.
I don’t care if there’s a mass exodus, there will always be enough players to support the game. It’s good enough. Just be transparent about the server populations, and let people move to where their friends are. I’d rather be on a server with queue times than an empty one.
No one wants anyone to play on a server or in a situation they do not want to play in, but you have to look at this with a wider lens. By enabling transfers or opening space on the fuller servers, you cause two things to happen – 1. you increase the queues on that server, and 2. you exacerbate the issue of diminishing populations on servers that need the people. Everyone except the individual (one person) transferring is hurt by this.
So, from an individual perspective, you may feel cheated by not being able to create a character or transfer to that ultra-full server – but from the community perspective, this is an issue that is much more complex and cannot be solved (in fact, it will only be made worse) by the solution you are advocating.
Again, it is not an ideal situation – and hopefully better minds than ours (at ArenaNet) are working on solutions that fit everyone’s needs.
You didn’t read the thread. There are no queues on some of these “Ultra full servers”. On Forth Aspenwood, there was maybe 50 players in all WvW zones, no queues, and no overflows in Lions Arch, yet the server list marked it as full. This had been the case for at least 3 days. Something is up, and it’s not the population.

Lies. All lies.
That’s another problem. People jumping ship because they want to be on a “Winning server”… I just want a competitive server. Fort Aspenwood was fine for a while, but ever since the FOTM, WvW has been suffering huge loss of participation. I think this is the case on most servers. It was a terrible mistake to introduce more vertical progression that is exclusively attained in PvE. I know they aim to fix this, but if they don’t make it available in WvW, then they should never have introduced it in the first place.
Back on topic, I seriously doubt that the 18 “Full” servers are actually full. I’m pretty confident that FC is trying to artificially even out populations by locking the higher pop servers from transfers. I say this because weeks ago it was fairly easy to see the fluctuation from “very high” to “Full” and back when refreshing the server list. That doesn’t happen anymore. Over the last few days, the list of “Full” servers has not changed, and I have checked all throughout the day and night, into the wee hours of the morning with no changes. So I have the choice to play with my GF on a server with NO wvw participation, or move to one of the WvW deficient leftovers…. WEAK SAUCE.
Then they need to increase the player cap, because a sever should never read “Full” and have 0 WvW participation.
Something is very wrong. Either the masses are in FOTM or some other instances, or Anet has a bigger problem on their hands. I really can’t stand when Game companies lie about their numbers. Age of Conan had servers with less than 100 players TOTAL, still registering “Medium” population in the server list. In fact, they are still to this day stuck at medium when in reality they should read “Very low”. This kind of shenanigans needs to go away. I know the servers are not full. There is no reason to lie about it.
I’m from Fort Aspen-wood. I just transferred to HOD because it was one of the only NOT FULL severs on the list, since my GF wanted to play. This situation has me very annoyed with ANet. Such short sightedness is staggering. At this rate, by Christmas, there will nothing but empty “full” servers.
Henge of denravi is completely impotent in WvW… I made a terrible mistake in transfering there. I though it was supposed to be a PvP focused server. I was sooooo wrong. My fear is that I will never be able to rejoin my home server now that Anet is locking them.
It’s pathetic. The server is Full, but theres’ NOBODY PLAYING INGAME. WvW is DEAD. No Queue times, and no Overflow in the PvE world. THis is a kitten conspiracy. Anet is trying to herd new players and Transfers to the 7 low pop servers. If they wanted to encourage transfers, they could just offer some free gems. This shady kitten is kitten me off. My GF installed the game last night and can’t join me on my server, so I transferred to one of the only available servers and WvW is in ever WORSE shape over there. I’m soo kitten right now. FIX YOUR kitten ANET!
I think Anet is force blocking new players and Transfers to lower populated servers. This is a terrible move. If you want people to move to another server, give us some free gems or something as an incentive. Don’t be sly and shady by artificially showing servers as “Full” when new players want to join their friends. This is bullkitten and needs to be made right. If I can’t play with my GF and guild-mates, I might as well be playing a different game.
My Gf bought and installed the game, but cannot join me. My server is “Full”, despite not having any queue times for WvW. What gives? An official response would be VERY appreciated. Why are most of the US servers “Full” and the remaining 7 “Very High”, when there is no evidence of this ingame. I don’t see overflows or queue times anywhere. Something is fishy here.
If the game is dying then why are most of the servers “Full” and the remaining 7 are “Very High” on the list?
The problem is that our server is full… so nobody can join. Anet has done something wonky with the server capacity. Only 7 servers on the list are “Very High”. Funny thing is that even though ours is listed as full, there are no queues for WvW, and very few of our members are participating in WvW. Something is broken. My GF wants to start playing but she can’t join. ANET FIX THIS CRAP. Please.
My GF is having the same problem. Seems there are only 7 servers that arent full. It’s very annoying.
My GF just installed the game and we want to play together. But since my server (Fort aspenwood) is ALWAYS FULL…. She cannot join me. So now what? She doesn’t want to have to pay for a transfer. So I guess we just have to move on to another game…
Maybe everyone is in Fractals, grinding for Ascended gear…. That’s why WvW is dead, and the servers are “Full”… If that’s the case I will be even more annoyed.
Well I don’t see the logic in that since WvW populations have nothing to do with Full status. My server (Fort Aspenwood) is perpetually “full”, yet there are NO que times for any border land. Something is broken.
Interesting… so how many people would have to log out in order to allow my GF to log in?
I don’t know how Anet tags severs full, when they are clearly not (go to WvW and take a look, even on a FULL server you may not see anyone in game for miles), but they better fix what’s broken, because my GF just bought the game so she could play with me, and she cannot get on my serve because it’s stuck at “full” in the server list. This really pisses me off.
Oh and and I’m a Charr warrior, so it’s not a racist bug.
I am also having this same problem. I cannot complete this quest because I cannot control the tank. Fix please.
But how does it make you FEEL?
I never die. Ever. Not one time. But if I did, I would probably quit playing, because that would mean game is broken.
And every other game that has tried to copy that panda game has failed to maintain even a fraction of the player base WOW has. It’s a bad idea. Anet is on thin ice with this vertical progression BS.
I’ve never died, so I don’t understand this question.
I think the whole ascended gear idea is kittening stupid. It’s a slippery slope that will end badly.
What it boils down to is, if I wanted more gear treadmills and vertical progression, I’d go back to WOW. I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way.
Changing game design philosophies mid swing is a bad idea. My guess is they are scrambling to recover finances and are grabbing at straws. The loot kittens (those who need item stat progression to be motivated to log in) have always proven to be a loyal bunch, even if it’s the current minority of players, it’s where they believe the money will come from in the long run. It will kill the game for most of us though. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Age of Conan went through a similar change with the introduction of the 1.05 patch. Before the patch, item stats had no effect on PvP. Once they revamped the gear, the game went on life support ever since. The same will happen if Anet follows suit. Mark my words.
My memory of Conan is a bit different. Life support was started when people realized that there was zilch content after 20ish and it was basically mob grind to max level.
There were many issues with that game early on. The biggest one being that they could not deliver what they advertised. Broken sieges, lack of content, and bugs up the kitten #8230;.. The money heads at Funcom blamed the original vision for the game’s failings and demanded they change direction to the more conventional MMO path. Introducing the gear treadmill. The game currently has 10 players.. The majority of the player-base was PvP focused. They all left. Anet should learn from this. Don’t sell your game to the PvP crowd, then fail at giving us what we were promised. Don’t cave into the wow bunch, because they are just as fickle and will just go back to wow anyway. Stay the course. Introduce Guildwars as a pvp option (guild vs guild). Improve and polish WvW (normalize item stats in wvw). You’ll keep more players and make more money that way.
The problem is that it’s a slippery slope. Once they introduced even minor vertical stat increases, the fear (and justifiably so) is that they will continue to add stat increases. Even if the increases are minor, there is a huge segment of the population that will feel compelled to grind for it. This divides the player base even further. People who might otherwise be participating in WvW, might feel guilty that they aren’t grinding for ascended gear and won’t WvW as much. Once the ascended gear is available through other game modes, this might be alleviated, but to be honest I don’t think its a wise design choice. Age of Conan went through a similar change with the introduction of the 1.05 patch. Before the patch, item stats had no effect on PvP. Once they revamped the gear, the game went on life support ever since. The same will happen if Anet follows suit. Mark my words.
Dear Cezton.2415
+1 to you my friend your correct, this game suxs donkey crap… For me its a time toilet till something good comes out. Because games today are sooo fing bad, I am tempted to stop playing any mmo’s all together. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER in history guru3d and game spot have made post’s and video about games of today being tooo dumbed down. This is a rising issue for vets that have had years to hone their gaming skills. As a true reality it is becoming, video games arnt going to be the same any more. A good mmo needs grind, thats what they were about. Take away that element and you got games like this. 3 weeks 4 hours aday = done, I have nothing left to do. Games of today are focusing tooo much on new generations of players and forgetting about the vets. OR maybe people are just lazy as hell now and dont want to work for anything.
As an example to how fail this game is, myself and my friend have grinded to lvl 68 with out using any armor or accessories. WHAT game out there, lets u grind almost to end game with out using any armor?? its unreal… this game is a amusement park, not a mmo.
In 2006 Cabal online came out, the only game I have seen where u could run a dungeon 10000 + times and have maybe 0.5% chance to get a forcium drop or a cape. Games like that arnt made any more, its all about “hand holding now”
So a game that doesn’t require you to spend 30hours+ a week to get anywhere is “Hand holding now”…. Dude, why don’t you go back and play Cabal Online then? What’s stopping you? Any Korean mmo would give you the grind you want. I don’t want my hand held, I want my skill as a player to matter more than the items stats. I play for PvP, so your argument is only valid for PvE. Last I checked this game was heavily marketed for it’s PvP…… Who invited these “hardcore MMO Vets”? “Lollercopterroflskates”….
There are alot of players who wanted a gear treadmill. Those people have forgotten that the game has NO MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION. There is nothing stopping you and your ilk from going elsewhere to get your grind on. Anet has your money already. Come back when they release an expansion. Or don’t The game wasn’t aimed at the traditional MMO audience. There’s enough players who actually enjoy the gameplay, and gear isn’t the primary reason we log in. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. What can I say?
The lack of participation on Fort Aspenwood’s part is pathetic. My guild transfered here because our last server (Darkhaven) turned out to be full of PvE carebares. Instead of “sitting this one out” why don’t you grow a pair and get fighting? Legion in Flames is out there taking keeps, if we had some server support we’d be able to hold them…. There is no excuse for this, stop being kittens.
This game was made for people like Warmonkey and I. Deal with it.
Need to find a goal to set, whether it’s karma gear, cultural armor, a legendary, or something, and slowly work toward it. Play a bit every day to reach that goal. Not like you have a set amount of time to play due to a subscription, so just play when you want to have fun or whatever.
If you aren’t enjoying it, wager whether the $60 was well-spent, and if it isn’t do more research before buying games or something. A.net went into detail on blog posts about how there wasn’t really much progression in the game months before release.
Yes, this game was aimed at people who wanted an mmo, without the gear > skill model. It’s a cold reality that many players will not be able to adapt to this strange new world that doesn’t try to dangle “Fun” in the form of a carrot on a stick in front of players to keep them playing.
The game has been out for one month… If you are already board, you have indeed played too much, or have focused too much on a particular aspect of the game. Item power progression is not going to happen in this game. It doesn’t have to. More content will come. In the mean time you can do some WvW, or SPvP, or play alts. Or just hang it up for a while. It’s fine. You’re not paying a monthly fee. If you played more than 10 hours, you got your money’s worth, and Anet got your money, so it’s a perfect relationship at this point. Those of us who continue to enjoy the game for it’s design choices will continue to to so regardless of how many gear grinders whine and complain about it. No offense, but you might as well go play that other game that will give you the kind of “endgame content” that you have been hardwired to lust for. That is all.
In all seriousness, this game beats all other mmo’s I’ve ever played simply because there is no gear grind for end game. WvW is why I bought the game. At 80, everyone has the same stats, so I don’t feel obligated to grind for gear just to compete. Thankyou Anet.
Dude… you forgot the most important and compelling aspect that “the other mmo” has to offer….. Kung Fu Pandas. MOP > Gw2. End of discussion. ;P
I love it. Sure it’s annoying to be knocked down by an NPC, but I get up again…. In PvP there is so much fun to be had from using “Death From Above” and jumping down off the walls of a keep into a crowd of enemies… Seeing their bodies flying in all directions is… exquisite…
Dude is mad he can’t WTFPWN in PvP with his epic LOOTZ gained from a thousand hours of grinding. Typical hard core gear grinder mentality. More tears please, I’m thirsty.

PvP > PvE. Sorry..
This game was not made with the old model. Since there is no monthly sub, they don’t need a “hook” to keep players subscribed. The game is designed around fun mechanics and gameplay. Not compulsion loops. It may not be “addicting” enough for the “wow-washed” masses. I think Anet has done an amazing job breaking the conventions of the genre. I love good pve content, but my focus is WvW and fighting massive battles with my guild mates. I love how I don’t feel obligated to grind or repeat content for the sake of maintaining statistical effectiveness in PvP. It is unfortunate that many players didn’t read the description before buying the game…
