PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
Exactly Durzlla. Between taking a SB and a LB in a tower/keep defense fight, I’ll take the LB every time because you have the range to make the hits hurt, and you’ve got the defensive utility of the entire bow at your disposal.
See an enemy on a Flame Ram? Knock them off with #4. See several people attacking the gates? Throw a #5 their way to make them back off (this work well even if you’re behind the gate aiming the AoE straight at it). Add a #3 to throw 10 stacks of vulnerability on an enemy while your arrow carts and allies are hitting them, and a #2 to help focus fire them, and you have the perfect defensive tool. There’s a reason why you see so many rangers use a LB when they’re not on arrow carts for defense.
Longbow #4 can throw people on rams off it. Throw multiple traps where they were standing, wait for them to hit it, use Longbow #5. For extra damage use Entangle from behind the gate to throw vines on them.
And LB is amazing for tower/keep defense from on the walls. If you’re not using it, you’re not a smart defender. By the way, Ranger is my MAIN.
NemesiS, can you knock somebody off a flame ram from on top of a tower/keep, and utterly destroy them from above with a Guardian and multiple AoE skills? Can you set down multiple abilities at chokepoints which will activate the second somebody touches them and hit multiple people at once, whittling down their ability to survive while the rest of the party destroys them? Can you throw down a healing field that lasts for 15 seconds and continually gets rid of conditions and grants regen to allies? Can you rez everybody downed nearby back up with a single skill? Can you wipe out most enemies 1v1 without problems?
Ranger can do all that, Guardian can’t. Face it, while Guardian is amazing in a group thanks to multiple buffs, by themselves they’re worthless in doing anything else in WvW.
You don’t understand how the trapper works solrik. The traps are in skirmishing because they fit the idea of it.
Definition of Skirmish: An episode of irregular or unpremeditated fighting, esp. between small or outlying parts of armies or fleets.
Sounds like traps fit that role, considering when you’re setting down a trap, it’s causing an unpremeditated fight since ANYTHING that hits the trap which you can attack will set it off.
Plus well…tell me, would you prefer to have to use the Master and Grandmaster Traits in the Wilderness Survival line to upgrade traps, and then sacrifice 2 VERY powerful traits for them, one of which serves as a permanent protection when under 25% health? Players take those traits in the WS traitline because they help us survive, thus fitting the role of a trapper and SURVIVAL even better than before.
Ranger is good for nothing.
Wether solo or not solo doesn’t matter.
Roll a warrior for PvE.I’ll drop your warrior anyday.
Shameless self bump to my most recent dueling video. Warrior can’t touch this. Rangers, you are good. Just look beyond your regular cookie-cutter builds, and needless tendency for berserker gear. Also, try to consider the viability of close-medium range weaponsets.
I would use sword, but I love the greatsword’s utility so much that I can’t put it down…and I tend to carry a SB on me for 1v1 matches and replace it for a longbow for defense of towers and zerging.
Guardian…better? Sorry, I laughed at that. Unless you’re a bunker Guardian and set up for it, you WILL die fast in WvW as a Guardian.
I like this idea, but the trait would need quite a bit of a cooldown time in order to prevent it from being too OP (such as 40-60 seconds cooldown).
I’m sorry, but I laughed when I read Kravik saying that Ranger pets are better than Necro minions. I’ll say this now, while it’s true the Ranger pet heals itself outside of battle and that can help quite a bit, the problem is that the AI for it is so horrible that the pet itself is a joke. Not to mention most people ignore the pet and aim straight for the player, which is easy to do since you only have to avoid 1 thing, compared to 4. I’d rather have your 4 minions than my pet, especially since those 4 minions can keep people occupied long enough for the necro to kill the opponent (it’s how I keep losing to necros in 1v1 in WvW, especially since they keep hitting for decent damage). The Ranger pet, however…you’re lucky if anybody aims for it. <_<
Also, Necro’s not the worst class to play as. If anything, it requires some skill, similar to Engineer and Ranger (and surprisingly I’m starting to like necro as much as my ranger because of some of the similarities they have for my playstyle).
(edited by RyuDragnier.9476)
Step 1: Fix pet AI
Step 2: Find some way to deal with the damage ratio between Ranger and pet
Step 3: Make it so the pets scale with the equipment (within their own niche, such as devourers getting more condition damage and vitality)
Step 4: Deal with the Ranger traitlines and the traits within (since some being in certain lines makes no sense, such as that active signet affecting the Ranger also trait in Marksmanship when it should be under Beastmaster)
Step 5: Fix the spirits and make them better in both survivability and active effects.
Step 6: ????
Step 7: Profit due to Rangers now being more viable in all forms of play.
Did you just refer to yourself in third person Kalkz? You did. Who are you? Plankton or Julius Caesar? (He wrote some books about a few of his accomplishments completely in the third person, in case anyone doesn’t get the reference.)
First you want our crabby patties, now you’re writing in the third person.
This is terrifying man. You’re spooking me.
Don’t worry about it, his computer wife will help him get better.
Iruwen, Guardians are not. They have to push hard just to kill something, even when they’re a glass cannon build…unless they’re running that spirit build in PvP.
Now it is, but before that patch…jesus christ was it difficult, even WITH exotics. Example here, with me attacking a single enemy.
If I stayed at long range, I’d get attacked by a Risen nearby. If I got in mid range, I’d get attacked by a Risen nearby. If I got into close range, I got attacked by a Risen nearby.
Orr was the equivalent of a mall on the day before Christmas in terms of how close Risen were to each other!
I thoroughly enjoyed leveling my ranger until Orr. Because of Orr, I stopped playing altogether until some friends talked me into coming back.
Oh man, you must have been like me and tried to play through it pre-patch. So many undead, so little safezones…but good news, they patched Orr so the amount of mobs in total is cut by at least 1/2. So you won’t have anywhere NEAR the annoyance as before.
On that, we can both agree.
Then why the heck is there such a focus on Borlis if we’re the worst ones here? Still the attention is nice, if a bit overbearing at times.
Who do you aim for, the weaker enemy who keeps attacking and won’t leave you alone, or the stronger force who is leaving you alone? You attack the one who keeps attacking until they finally stop, and THEN go for the stronger force.
In the Straits of Devastation, we had a zerg going to do the Temple of Balthazar, but we encountered a problem…if we have too many people there, the NPCs get completely wrecked on morale events because they don’t scale with the players, while the enemy forces do. I’d like for the NPCs in morale and protection events to scale with the players present as well, just so it’s possible to succeed using more than the suggested amount rather than failing easily because you exceeded a certain amount of players (and thus making the enemies too powerful).
Everybody on EB loves you as far as I know Sekz. And for some reason sometimes I feel slightly bad whenever I see you guys going after an enemy force…because we know they’ll die fast…but then I see that thief purposefully contesting all our waypoints and then I feel like they deserve it.
Zuer, it’s not like they can avoid using it, as some players don’t come onto the forums and aren’t even aware of that bug. If we’re lucky that’ll get patched soon. And it’s still better than people exploiting their way into keeps and taking them without people knowing (which I’ve heard reports of a very small amount of players on every side doing this).
CHAR pvp lessons are paid for in forum anger
we will have to refund archer at this rate
You’ll also have to give a massive refund to Walabone.
Well we are off to a good start I see…
Really though so many Glass Cannon builds with CoF armor on BP it seems, is all of Tier 5 like this?
Actually no. But that DOES explain why BP’s players seem to be easy to take out usually…
Walabone, we have no control over Rekz at all. They usually hit things without us even mentioning it. Also, if you’re the [WAR] group hitting our BL right now, you need to work on your form if you’re getting taken out by 8 people to your 10-12.
Wow, I never expected to see this right now. Job well done my fellow EB players.
eBay cracks me up. They claim their keep defense is impeccable and has no flaws of any kind. I was there last night, NA primetime with 14 of my guys and 3 pugs. We walked up to Hills south and built a superior ballista, demolished your defensive seige within a minute and then built two superior rams. Hills had 1100 supply. We had the door to 10% (a few minutes standing around) before ya’ll even considered responding.
Why do I bring this up? This was during your primetime! We were spotted IMMEDIATELY but yet we were almost in before anyone thwarted our response. What I find funny is “OH we would have seen the golems. We would have seen everything happening” but yet… if I built a golem at the gate you wouldn’t have noticed. DURING PRIMETIME!
Hahahahaha. I laugh.
P.S. I’m not saying it wasn’t exploiting, I’m saying that if it was and you reported them, ANet will handle it. It’s their business to take care of it.
What time was it when this was going on, and was the EB Borderlands all green before you started?
My friend’s getting this same problem. And since you need an ingame character to actually RESET THE PASSWORD (weird setup IMO) he can’t actually reset his account password.
From what I’ve seen Tetra, AR has gotten some fine strategy down to have made it into second place and stay there. BP, well…everytime I see them aim for something, it’s with numbers. That could just be how it is this week though, as to be honest I’m not on that much outside of the evening rush.
Wait..[CHAR] got hit with a ban? First I’m hearing about it. Can’t be correct.
They might have just been banned from the forums. No real way to know for sure, unless somebody from AR can tell us whether or not they’ve been seen.
Wait wait wait…Rangers disengage when fighting Warrior? I always take them down because it’s funny how they think they can stop me. So me striking them down is saying to the class “KNOW YOUR PLACE!”
So one thing I am hearing in all this is NA needs a T9…3 more servers….
That’s not going to help at all. All the servers on the NA side are Very High status, and you’re not going to get people who have put roots in a community to just leave it that fast.
The problem here is that anytime somebody gives a suggestion that is convenient for everybody, some of the EU players in this thread complain and blow it out of the water when said time makes it convenient for MOST PLAYERS, REGARDLESS OF REGION. And then said players have the gall to say the same time they’d get in said situation NA players can deal with when said complaining players refuse to want to deal with the same situation. Get off your kitten high horses people, either we attempt to appease most of the player population regardless of location or we don’t.
Aww man I really liked them. This is what happens when internal arguments occur with people in some kind of power.
Honestly, it seems like there’s still the opportunity for this game to have an attitude of sportsmanship. No need to have a CoD-style troll fest.
Too late, haven’t you seen the various T5 threads that pop up?
7AM PST is 10AM EST, which is 4PM Europe time, which is about 10PM or so Oceanic time. How is this a bad thing again?
Immolator, I hope the admins move it to Saturday at 7AM PST. It fixes all time problems for everybody. It’d be preferable for EU, NA, SEA, EVERYBODY for it to be at a time everybody can play at (since it’d be Saturday for everybody). I just don’t think they really thought on the time…and I’d wish everybody would push them to move it to that time.
Neither T5 or T6 has queues on reset night. Don’t know about T4, but I don’t believe it’s much different, since all T4 servers have strong overnight presence rather than a strong prime time presence.
Maybe not the EU servers.
[/quote]
Actually T5 does for the home borderlands and Eternal.
Glad to hear from you Robert. Since you said it’ll help Rangers and pets, then I’m assuming it’s a damage ratio change or the AI has been revamped, either of which is okay with me. I’ll be waiting for this patch to see what you guys have come up with.
I just wish they would have thought better on how to do this. They could have pushed the reset ahead to 7AM PST on Saturday and then not have had many worries at all. Would have made the reset 10AM EST, 4PM in Europe, and even 10PM SEA time. Everybody would get a piece.

Considering at the time I heard a large amount of complaints in WvW and had 50+ guildies stop doing WvW altogether because of it back when I was in Crystal Desert…I’m fairly certain.
Again, the previous culling patches before the newest one (which actually fixed it). More people saw problems with those patches than those who saw fixes.
Because they’ve made decisions before that weren’t best for the most people.
Because they’ve made decisions before without looking at the numbers. Need I remind you of the culling fixes they did before they finally did away with it?
Major problem here I can see for WvW is how many of the smart players can get in on the NA side. Yes, this can be a problem for both NA and EU, but the majority of our commanders seem to be West Coast, and they can be what prevents us from losing our entire borderlands in 4 hours. We’ve had resets where we got hit so hard that we lost Hills and almost lost Bay and Garrison, and only managed to keep them because we had good commanders giving orders. Without them, I imagine this new reset for us to lose our keeps within the queue time and take the rest of the night getting them back. And it may not just be EB, it may be multiple servers that will come across this problem. Setting a good defense at the getgo can lead to victory, despite what people think.
After having read that thread in its entirety, I can say that’s a REALLY bad decision. It now makes it difficult for me to even get on at reset. 5PM on Fridays I’m usually either cooking or meeting up my parents somewhere to eat. And they really aren’t joking when they mention the horrendous queues for WvW on the NA servers. I’ve actually had to wait 4 hours for one before. That’s not fun at all, and it will adversely effect WvW’s starting night horribly. If I were them I’d have waited until they were able to split both times and then have done it…because right now if they backpedal they’re going to kitten off the EU playerbase, and if they don’t they’re going to kitten off the NA playerbase. Either way it’s a PR nightmare.
Sorry, I derped. Herpaderped, to be exact. Was thinking daily reset instead of the WvW reset. But again, I’m fairly certain everything will reset at the same time as normal in NA, as otherwise it would be a really boneheaded and stupid move.
Uhh, the time for the NA daily reset hasn’t changed at all. You guys REALLY need to pay attention on when the dailies actually reset…
You can theory craft all you want, but you can’t say that one way or another. Fact is that spirits being invuln would be a very big change that would need to be carefully looked at. That makes them autofollowing buffs as good as or better than banners that also have fairly good active skills when you don’t have to worry about them dying.
I support a change like this, but it would have to be looked at carefully and well tested.
There’s no theory crafting about it. You’ll just continue the long standing trend of mediocrity if you do anything but make spirits unkillable. Anything else will simply result in them being murdered at the start of every battle. This game is packed with AoE. I can’t even expect my tank pet to survive more than five seconds in a fight. What makes you think spirits will? There’s no way around it if you want spirits to be viable.
Because apparently you missed the suggestion…
I’d prefer if upon death the spirit AoE explodes and gives some sort of field for friendly players to use, along with damage/buff/condition to nearby enemies/allies (depending on the spirit)
Sun Spirit - Explosion hits enemies nearby for fire damage and inflicts burn. Burn Field.
Frost Spirit - Explosion hits enemies nearby for frost damage and inflicts chill. Chill Field.
Stone Spirit - Explosion hits enemies nearby for earth damage and inflicts cripple and bleed. Dunno what kind of field we could do for this one if any.
Storm Spirit - Explosion hits enemies nearby for lightning damage and inflicts vulnerability and daze. Lightning Field
Spirit of Nature - Explosion heals allies nearby (dependent on Ranger’s Healing Power) and gives Vigor and Regen to allies. Water Field
Well played Amadeus. And that ladies and gentlemen, is how you roll with a ranger.
Blackhawk, as with every condition damage build, it can get frustrating when you fight anybody capable of constantly washing away your conditions from themselves. When you’re in small groups, the odds of encountering somebody who does that is pretty low, but if you’re in a zerg, good luck keeping up the condition damage on anything.
So a person who knows what he’s doing with a LB/GS Ranger with a glass cannon build can take out multiple guys by himself and not get killed doing it?
Ranger, mostly definitely. The playstyle fits me like a glove.
Zenith, which do you think will kill an enemy that loves to become invulnerable, invisible, teleport, etc every few seconds? Raw damage, or conditions?
Mik, the longbow is more for team play than anything else, at least in my opinion. It shines in WvW, group event bosses, and dungeon bosses mostly. Other than that it’s not really worth keeping on you too much, at least for the time being. And you can buy a cheap Greatsword from any weapon selling NPC.
My opinion, the most OP class right now is Elementalist, but that’s because of the D/D build being able to do almost anything. Thief can be OP at times depending on the build, and Mesmers can be quite powerful as well (the shatter ones are terrifying). Warriors and Guardians are bottom of the barrel along with Engineers (sorry guys, but I rarely lose to one of you as a Ranger). Rangers and Necros end up coming up in the center, as they can handle most aspects of WvW without being too underpowered or overpowered.
Again, this is all my opinion…
