PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
In Crystal Desert we’ve got Charr EVERYWHERE. Too bad the server is constantly full, because my offline friends can never get into the server.
^No, we want an annoyance that is unwanted to be able to be put away during battle so we can play the ranger without some blasted pet getting in our way.
My pet is usually dead so often despite my best efforts otherwise in PvP that I usually kill things without it, making it feel like it’s useless. The same goes in PvE sometimes, usually against bosses. Then again, I don’t have a single point in BM, so…
If people want to use the pet, great. If people don’t want to, how does it hurt someone else if we were given the option to put them away and keep them put away?
Because then you’re a poor man’s warrior, utterly inferior to one?
Sounds like you’re butthurt about something.
^Except we want an archer, not a melee fighter.
Not a huge fan of pets either.
So why are you playing the pet class?
In most MMOs, the archer-like class has nothing to do with pets, and the playstyle of the Ranger is the closest you’ll ever get to Archer in this game.
+1 for this idea. It works, there’s no real suffering for loss of DPS, it fixes quite a bit of the problems, and the only problem I could see is the amount of the boosts given, but that’s fixable easily.
This thread speaks the horrible truth about the trait lines. Personally I would fix the traits that give certain species better F2 skills, and instead make it so ALL pets gain a new ability with their F2, fitting their playstyle. For example, the Fern Hound’s Regenerate could also give Vigor or Protection, the Jaguar’s stealth could affect up to 5 people nearby, etc. You know, an actual upgrade.
It’s quite easy TC. If you’re going to use it, make kitten well sure you’re kiting while using it, or that you’re safely out of danger. But sometimes, if you feel the risk is worth it to take down a foe, pull QZ out and go all out on the enemy. Remember, you DO have Save Me to fall back on if the need be (though it doesn’t help against DoT).
Technically we’re outdamaging our pets all the time anyway, since most of the time our DPS is high enough to where we’re either doing or outdoing our pet’s damage at the same rate. I’d change it to 10% buff though, as a 10% buff to damage wouldn’t change the outcome, as with the pet out we’re doing the same amount of damage as we would with a 10% buff.
Personally I’ve never seen a thief in stealth longer than 2 seconds, but that’s because I’m usually attacked within that amount of time right after they go into stealth. Rangers…we’re pretty weak to most classes you know. I originally was going through the assumption that you guys had like a 10 second stealth, but I only now just looked at the times (I really should have to begin with) and saw the longest one you have is like 5 seconds. So ignore the too long thing. But dear god if you guys don’t go stealth so often. XD
Personally I say just do something about how long you can stay in stealth and the cooldowns on the stealth moves. Make it so they can’t go into stealth so often and can’t stay in it for long periods of time, and the problem is fixed. Or if they want to make it so you can still stay in it for long periods of time, then make it so a hit on somebody in stealth (not condition damage) will knock them out of it.
I’d prefer a skill that lets you disable your pet being out for 30 seconds, and during those 30 seconds all your stats take a 20% increase. But the cooldown would be 3 minutes.
Which server are you on?
I haven’t rerolled at all. I’ve made a few alts to play around with so I can see how things are for other classes, but the Ranger will ALWAYS be my main. Its playstyle just fits me like a glove.
Dodging CnD is a thief killer. 5 ini down the drain. You cannot fully recover from that unless you pack blinding powder/shadow refuge. Also, immobilize, daze, stun, knockdown…us thieves hate all of those really bad
Backstab thief
Necro : External armor – absorb backstab
ele – mist form, absorb backstab
Warrior – endure pain, absorb backstab
Mesmer – invulnerability, absorb backstab
Guardian – aegis, absorb backstab
Thief – blind, stealth
Engineer – Place turrets to daze, immobilize
Ranger – I think they also have an invulnerability, not sure. If not, knockdown, aoes cripple, trapsDid I miss anything?
Ranger’s Protect Me. Makes the pet take the damage instead. Quite useful for that sort of thing when it’s not on cooldown.
Why release a game if its not even ready? Oh wait. Because they had to satisfy the customer’s demands. Therefore resulted in a buggy, out of place mmorpg.
>implying there are MMOs that have released without bugs
>implying no good MMO has bugs
Odds are the truce will last until TC is at 2nd/3rd place, and then the fighting shall begin again. Because lI don’t think FA appreciated TC’s betrayal from their short lived “truce”, which let’s face it, was to be expected since they’re already ahead of everybody else, they don’t need help keeping it.
Jon, I love you. MARRY ME.
30 second duration on stealth, 15 second cooldown, it turns off on attack or being hit. Problem solved.
Any way we could possibly get a skill that negates stealth and makes it unusable for up to 15 seconds at a range of 300 units with a 25 second cooldown? It would also instantly knock anybody in stealth out of it if they enter that AoE. I believe it would help with our usefulness in PvP, and would serve as a slight nerf to thieves and anybody who uses stealth (in case you weren’t planning on nerfing the stealth for thieves, which is in dire need of it).
Better idea, how about a trait that allows Rangers to see a thief while they’re in stealth, or a slot skill that rangers can use that CANCELS stealth and prevents its use for all enemies within the range of a longbow, lasting 30 seconds, with a 45 second cooldown?
Agreed. Signet of the hunt needs to and will go to 25%.
FYI this is slated for the 14th of December.
Seems pretty clear to me (at least for this one)
How about you wait until/if said change is actually implemented before drawing premature conclusions?
We’ve had our share of empty promises before. You’d think you’d have learned from that.
Take your own advice please.
Agreed. Signet of the hunt needs to and will go to 25%.
I love it when you do things like this. You’ve now made me utterly GIDDY, and I shall remain so until the 14th.
What an immature thread.
The reason he was posting on the mesmer forums is likely because the phantasm issue is a lot more game breaking since it’s affecting every weapon combination and is a central class mechanic.
Ranger pets aren’t a central class mechanic?
Are they really necessary to kill anything?
I’ve been doing that TC. Soon I shall have an army of Charr to destroy my foes! It’s a shame you can’t call your other characters in as Warband members. X3
when you see something physically pleasing and say “I’ll need to scout ALL this.”
That form made me laugh, because EVERY complaint I’ve seen is covered in that form.
It’s frustrating. Just comparing rangers with elementalists, you see that they can outdamage us, outlive us, and outheal us. And don’t even make me start about guardians.
And yet in a 1v1 situation against a ranger they get taken down fast. I’ve yet to be killed by a elementalist in a 1v1 fight…
Jeez, so many complaints in this thread. Now we need a complaint about the complaints so we’ve run full circle. Wait, I think I just fulfilled that.
I wonder if he no longer reads the Ranger Forums because he is afraid to show his face to us after his false promises.
Or he’s actually busy doing, I don’t know…coding on a test server to actually see if he can fix the problems? In other words, he may be pulling “less talk, more action”. Which would be very nice. But don’t expect any real responses until the next update patch on the 14th.
naediian understand how it works. There are 2 ways to balance the classes…nerf the stronger ones to take them down to the level of the weak ones, or buff the weak ones to take them up to the power of the strong ones.
That’s actually the stance I’ve been WANTING to take, but whenever I do I usually get bashed for saying there’s any good in the Ranger class. Some of those bugs show up often when you’re dungeon running, especially the obstruction bug. I’ve started keeping a greatsword on me in PvE just for when that happens, which sucks because I like being able to combine just longbow and shortbow skills.
It’s part of the reason why I’m hoping the next big update fixes the obstruction bug, possibly buffs the spirits a little, and a few other things.
Weird, they’ve been dropping things just fine for me. Which regions are you guys killing them at ingame?
Protip: just because you think something is, does not make it so.
Well isn’t this the pot calling the kettle black? Take that own tip of yours to heart. Just because you think the class is bad doesn’t mean it is. Work with the cards you’re dealt with, don’t fold the hand at the beginning of the match!
Obstinate, what’s the longest you’ve “held the line” at a defense point? I lasted half the match taking down multiple enemies with backup coming to save me from falling. Finally I fell…because the entire enemy team was on me.
Thanks for the info Electro. I went with the Deathly Avian Shoulderpads, since they look the most natural with the outfit I’m going for. Said outfit preview is attached.
It’s simple…they know he’s useless without the player. Get rid of the player, and he can’t do anything.
I’ve fought against a good guardian. Was a complete and total stalemate. I took down his HP by half, he healed it back up, he took down my HP by half, I dodged and kited to fill it back up. Kept going back and forth for 5 minutes, with neither side winning. It would have kept going had that thief not shown up.
Quoting a story without any kind of backup or sharing of information isn’t going to benefit anyone. Not that I won’t take your word for it, but bragging about something would be really good if you could maybe share your build with the rest of us, if we are doing something wrong we are, but I really doubt that so very many people are getting the same results from our class because all of us are doing it wrong.
My build is a trap/tank build.
10/30/30/0/0
Weird that I could take off that much, I know. I was pretty surprised by it too.

All I hear usually is “Good, we have some more DPS.” Then again, I run them with my guildies and most of them have run Ranger before, so they know how it works.

I feel that the stats of the spirits should rise with your own level, possibly with their health being the same as yours. Why? Because it doesn’t matter what your health is, you can still get taken out pretty quickly as a Ranger no matter where you are. And since spirits don’t defend themselves…yeah.
He is a casual player who thinks because he fights bads and beats them he is good. Sorry but ranger isnt great in pvp, troll on.
Depends on the build sparky. ANY class can be good or suck at PvP depending on the build and how you play them. I’ve seen guardians who have died at the hands of my ranger easily.
Hey, I only joined the game during the Lost Shores event, and was mostly solo. I only started dungeon runs last week, WvWvW 4 days ago, and PvP Structured yesterday.
I’m still wondering how that double of the same trap thing was a nerf. I never even heard of that bug until after it was patched, nor had I seen it before it was patched.
As someone who can happily adapt to bugs until they’re fixed, rather than stopping everything to declare the entire game broken and worthless the instant I so much as hear about a newly-introduced issue, I wholeheartedly support the constant and continual addition of new content.
Thanks for being awesome, ArenaNet. <3
The fact they have you thinking that it’s ok for them to ship a buggy product says lots.
You assume no game has EVER been released without bugs, let alone a MMO. I assure you, there not has been, nor ever will be a MMO released that does not have bugs!
How do you even get those Shoulderpads? I didn’t join until the Lost Shores thing, so…
Rather than simply point out the OP’s false claim that he speaks for everyone, perhaps those in opposition should simply work on proving his opinion wrong with facts…
Everyone = nobody disagrees.
Somebody is disagreeing. Thus, it’s not everyone.
/thread
I changed the title to reflect that it is a personal opinion.
Maybe its me, but this comes of as quite snide. I assure you the OP is not alone in his thinking. Lets not forget the amount of one-time content that is released into the game in a non working state. Phase 1 lost shores anyone?
The thread’s title DID come off as him talking like everybody shared his opinion. But then again, titles can be deceiving.
Glad to know I wasn’t the only one noticing this problem. Made the JP in Plains of Ashford more difficult than usual.
Can’t you guys just revert back to what it was before patch? It’s starting to feel like you are trying to fix “fixes” on things that had little to no issue before.
As a question, have you ever coded something before? I’m in basic Javascript and just a single error or added character (0-9, a-z, and anything like a ; : or a ,) can cause problems. It can take me 30 minutes just to find the problem in a simple 12 line code. And even then there’s a chance I screwed something else up, causing another error I have to fix! It’s a tough game of trial and error at times.
Imagine how much work this is for the programmers, since it’s over 1 million lines odds are. My hats off to the programmers, as you have some rough nights ahead of you.
Yes I have coded. I test my code first before I release the code to someone else. If the new code causes problem then I revert it back to what it was before… unless the old code was broken too. So here’s the question, was the old jumping code broken for you? If not, then why not just revert back? I’m just using a bit of common sense here.
The only reason I, as a programming amateur, would not revert back is if it causes massive problems elsewhere in the code.
