PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
All hail the mighty cliff! It’s hilarious when a Ranger uses the LB #4 to shoot an enemy off a cliff. Most people don’t expect a Ranger to use one, so the second it happens I laugh so hard because they hit the ground and I get that lovely exp.
I’m not even going to bother to read this:
Yes, Stealth is busted and shouldn’t have been included in PvP/WvW play.
But since they royally kittened that up, there’s no way of fixing it without serious game overhaul. It would literally BREAK the Thief class. No, not make it so people wouldn’t play it because we wouldn’t be gimmicky backstabbers. Most good players have moved on from those builds. It would break it because Stealth is our only means of defense, some of our offense, and pretty much overall gameplay. You take Stealth from the game and Thieves are little more than giant paper targets.
Wrong. They can make a small stealth change. No need to be dramatic. You have other defense, like skill sum dodge, food, armor.
All other classes have those defenses, and then some.
so stealth is not the thief’s ONLY defense. Your steatement is incorrect. Don’t be so dramatic. Thieves could withstand a little stealth nerf here and there. It won’t be the end of the world.
My statement is not incorrect. All the other classes have those defenses, and then some.
Stealth doesn’t need a nerf. It’s fine, even in WvW.
How would you feel about making it so the damage numbers appear on other people’s screens if you take damage while in stealth? That way you’re still in stealth, but people know what general area you’re in. Or if you take maybe 20% more damage while in stealth?
Just did a run on path 1, and I LOVE the changes. Spider Queen is challenging, Kohler and his minions are easier to deal with, love the Stalkers and the lack of scavengers mostly (hated those things), and the Howling King fight was actually REALLY fun. If Path 2 and 3 are like this, then I daresay you’re onto something with the upgrades to the dungeons.
That makes me wonder…does anybody on the dev team actually PLAY the Ranger class? If not, there’s the problem right there. One does not simply ‘fix’ a class they’ve never played.
Just wanted to make a comment on that; No. Most of the devs play Thieves.
Then they need to get their kitten in gear and play the other classes so they know what the hell they’re nerfing and buffing.
If it is already in the game, then ALL OF MY MONEY! ALL OF IT!
This is my first MMO. My impression of MMOs has always been that players are bad at PvP in MMOs. I just came upon the realisation that my impression was completely correct whilst reading this thread.
Try fighting a good thief in WvW as one of your alts.
I’m not against transfers in general though…just the way “some people” have a abused them.
This is my thoughts on it as well. Nice job “ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL” dude.
As that one guy earlier in the thread put it, make it so we can see the numbers when we hit them. That way we KNOW we’re not swinging at thin air. And to add more fun to it, make it so thieves take 20% more damage while stealthed. It nerfs the difficulty without nerfing the stealth.
Ugh that hair color…it doesn’t mesh well with the blue of the armor. Try changing it to a darker shade of blue if possible, as it’ll look much better.
What’s funny is that it’s usually fairly easy to destroy those from afar.
What if it’s MADE by a Charr?
I found a stealth nerf to Elementalist last night in WvW. It was not in the patch notes:
If you’ve just used Mist form and then get downed, you can’t use Vapour Form (F2). I was fighting a guardian and got jumped by a thief who started to kill me very fast. I hit Vapour form but since that has already been nerfed into the ground was still taking huge condition damage while supposedly invulnerable. Entered Downed state. F2 had 12 sec cooldown ticking away. Died. I had not been in a Downed state since entering WVW so there was no possible cooldown from any previous fight.
Extremely annoyed. I don’t run a flavour of the month build and just spec and run as support generally. My escape spells are crucial for those times I get jumped. ArenaNet have really messed up this patch.
I understand the need to nerf D/D Elementalists but I disagree strongly with screwing over everything else while desperately trying to balance them.
I laughed. You ALWAYS take condition damage while invulnerable, it’s one of the only things (ironically) that can bypass invulnerable (other than fall damage).
Agreed, I would recommend after a kill you cannot stealth again for 15-20 seconds or make the thief take more damage while in stealth when hit.
I think we’ve hit a possible solution. That way thieves can still stealth, but they put themselves at risk in battle.
Exactly how long ago did that happen? Depending on the time you attacked you probably caught us on one of our ‘deadzones’ when barely anybody is online.
That’s happened to me before as well. I find it more funny than anything, as it’s not something you expect at all.
I think he means that T1 and T2 don’t really need to recruit anybody, considering you guys are in the top 6 servers for a reason, and should be happy you’re there.
I find it difficult to believe that so many Rangers are ignorant, which is probably wishful thinking… Despite the fact most of our skills are borked in one way or another, we do have useful ones. I can only assume that someone started a rumour that it was bugged and that’s why people use it.
It’s no wonder people don’t want Rangers in dungeons. On top of everything else there are Rangers that are actively making themselves worse by using this Signet instead of something useful.
It depends on WHEN you’re using the Signet. If you’re using it to run across fields to help explore them faster, or for running down those spots where you’re trying to reach certain spots while running from mobs in dungeons, it’s a good choice. But if you’re fighting a boss or going to be fighting a large group of enemies, you better be changing that out for something useful.
sees Sorrow’s Furnace and looks up server to find out it’s a T8 server currently in the lead
…are you REALLY trying to shoot yourself in the foot here? This is something you can use to bring yourself up in points so you’re not dead last in the rankings, and yet you’re trying to get rid of it? Excuse me while I facepalm.
JQ, I think at this point you’ve got nowhere to go. WvW must be incredibly boring without anybody to fight. How long will it be before you start losing guilds who want to have good fights? How long will it be before you have a server exodus to more fun WvW fights, and end up crashing down to the bottom?
I’m being totally serious when I ask this too, as now you have nowhere to go but down.
I’m recruiting MADNESS to this thread.
I facepalm at the people complaining about the kill 40 in X zones. I mean come on, what’s so hard about killing 40 mobs in Plains of Ashford and Wayfarer Foothills? They have EVENTS that make it so much easier. For example, in Plains of Ashford you have the harpy events and the flame legion events. In Wayfarer Foothills you have the Sons of Svanir events all over the place. Are you telling me you can’t be bothered to take 5 minutes to do those?
I swear the new generation of MMO gamers is becoming lazier and lazier…
Then the answer is obvious…get the dev people from each class to actually PLAY IT. That way they know what’s up when it comes to the class useability.
see Swagger thread and immediately shakes head and leaves
Obvious joke topic is obvious.
That makes me wonder…does anybody on the dev team actually PLAY the Ranger class? If not, there’s the problem right there. One does not simply ‘fix’ a class they’ve never played.
Depending on how you want your stats other than Condition Damage, the following are all good suggestions for armor prefixes.
Rampager (Precision/Power/Condition Damage)
Carrion (Condition Damage/Power/Vitality)
Rabid (Condition Damage/Precision/Toughness)
As you can tell, they usually run with Precision to help with the critical strikes. I personally ran Carrion because I tend to run dungeons with the guild and prefer to be able to survive the ‘ultimate’ attacks of the enemies easier without being insta-downed.
Are you running a trap build, or a crit build?
Rangers bad…in PvE? Do you mean dungeons and fractals, or just straight up PvE? Because if you mean regular PvE…then I don’t think you’re doing it right.
It’s a sad day when I have the urge to troll these subforums.
A guildie told me a fairly good idea last week on how to balance thieves without taking out the stealth aspect. Make it so each consecutive attack with a single skill (other than the default one) gets weaker with each use. For example, if you use 4 heartseekers in a row, the damage output would look like this:
1st use: 100%
2nd use: 90%
3rd use: 80%
4th use: 70%
Meaning the attacks would actually LOSE effectiveness, and it’d become unwise to spam the move.
Frankly, if they WERE to introduce an airship, I would only agree to it if it could only be used as a breakout type event, but to take control of the keep on your server’s side of the EB.
Emp bond I always felt was a little too powerful. And I agree, they should buff us before nerfing anything. Personally, I’d start with the weapons and then go to the traits next, especially considering the damage from the LB is the same as the SB, which makes it less useable. Plus the GS damage is pretty subpar.
ITT: Somebody telling Rangers to quit the game due to outrage at developers when they don’t play a Ranger.
To be honest, the only thing they really nerfed was guard, and who used that outside of WvW other than to take towers and keeps? It was a pretty niche usage base to begin with, and that nerf doesn’t change anything. If you think it does, then you’re crazy.
I can see why they nerfed RTL. I got hit with that far too often by D/D elementalists in WvW while on my ranger, which made it fairly easy to die, especially considering how fast they could reuse it. Also, to the one complaining they didn’t nerf Swoop, I’ll tell you why…it doesn’t make you invulnerable and you don’t knockdown everybody around you. Those two things combined makes RTL very powerful, so feel lucky they nerfed the cooldown and not the fact that it does those.
RTL doesn’t make you invuln. It makes you extremely vulnerable in fact. You can still take damage and be immobilized while using RTL, and if you do, you have no access to your abilities. It functions no differently than any other dash except that eles have the extra joy and losing all of our abilities when we use it. With the CD nerf to a regular dash, it should have its mechanics changed to a regular dash too.
I’ve never seen it happen. I’ve hit them with knockback during it, does nothing. Hit them with immobilize, does nothing. Tried to slow them down with chill and cripple, does nothing. If it’s supposed to stop them in their tracks, I’m not seeing it.

That is SOOOOO adorable. I’m going to have to buy one now.
I expect nothing.
Not saying that in the cynical “oh they won’t do anything life sucks” sort of way, but the fact that I really have no idea what they’ll do. There hasn’t really been much hinting at all lately and with Guild Missions hitting I doubt any of the huge issues like Pet AI are going to be tackled just yet, so…
I agree with this entirely.
Just got my elementalist to level 11 while on my long journey to get a character of each class to level 80, and I was wondering what’s a good DPS build for the Scepter/Dagger combo. I’m looking at all the traits, and I’m having a hard time figuring out just what to put things in, unlike the Ranger and Guardian, where it was fairly easy to figure it out for trap and support builds, respectively.
Or you transfer off Kaineng to EB or CD, or one of the other servers stuck in a tier with an uneven fight.
Noty, we at Ehmry enjoy our current population. Maguuma is a much better fit for you zerglings.
You think the current NA Primetime CD zergs? Oh honey, you haven’t seen anything. Try looking at T3 and higher. They’re FAR worse. Compared to that, we aren’t zerging, we’re going around in a small group.
Consider transferring off Maguuma to Kaineng.
Or you transfer off Kaineng to EB or CD, or one of the other servers stuck in a tier with an uneven fight.
So tier 2 isn’t good enough for your transfers? are they threatening to jump ship or something? Number 1 or bust is what this makes it sound like.
That’s the feeling I got from this thread too. If that INDEED is the case, then let them leave. You want people who stay on the server and keep it fighting, not mercs who will jump ship the second they feel like it.
This is going to be a cycle that repeats itself. Couple of months later SOR will be the victim of this cycle if they can’t break 3rd place.
Then there’s us tier 3/4 servers that are ok being at that tier. Its truly amazing how different each tier’s attitude on their tier placement is.
Pretty much. The only thing I want for Tiers 3 and 4 is for the matches to be constantly even, just so nobody leaves their tier. At this point I’ve been so used to fighting Yak’s Bend that I keep accidentally calling Maguuma YB.
meh join a server full of transfers…..sounds super stable
This in a nutshell. The ones who usually transfer in just to go up a tier are usually the first ones to transfer out when it doesn’t move after about a month.
To be honest, you don’t need to use the pet at all to keep a constant good DPS in a dungeon, IMO.
I run a 10/30/30/0/0 build with traps, a LB/SB combo, and a Carrion set of armor. I manage to keep a good amount of DPS going thanks to the damage of the traps, which are rather powerful if you have the traits set for the traps. My pet dies pretty much all the time and it doesn’t halt my DPS much at all, so I use it for a distraction at this point and a bit of long-range support.
@Setun: What you see as playing to maximize the Scepter’s strengths is just adjusting your playstyle to minimize its flaws. You’re not helping anyone by claiming that the Scepter is a good weapon. It’s passable and you can make it work. That doesn’t mean it’s good.
But by that definition doesn’t that mean that all weapons aren’t good?
I tried doing a healing thing, but it didn’t work out for me, as the heals are subpar and the drop in DPS isn’t pretty. However, I DO have a newfound appreciation for the Staff while running in zergs, karma trains, and while fighting bosses.
So now I pretty much stick with Scepter/Torch and Greatsword when not doing a boss or around a bunch of other people, along with abusing the power of the shouts to buff others. I seem to do a lot better as attack support.
They aren’t immune to burning.
This thread is madness. MADNESS I TELL YOU! MADNESS!
I know what you mean Otha, I run with the same setup on my ranger usually. Stick with Spike Trap, it helps both for the CD and it’s a good way of keeping enemies behind you for a little while when you need to make a hasty retreat. Also, Signet of the Hunt is good if you’re in PvE or just wandering around in WvW. Otherwise, if you’re in a dungeon and not running past a bunch of mobs, in PvP, or helping defend a keep in WvW, exchange the Signet for Frost Trap. It helps keep the enemies moving the slowest they can and makes it easier on the group and yourself due to their increased recharge time for their skills.
Hmm, hard to choose NPCs I hate. NPCs I like though, I’ve got a list.
Tybalt – ANet, still waiting for that plush of my adorkable mentor
Detha – “YOUR PLAN IS JUST STUPID AND WON’T WORK!”
Rytlock – He oozes kittenery and manliness that I can’t help but like him
Zojja – She’s one of the only Asura I really like in this game, thanks to not being a total jerk about everything and not thinking of only herself (I really dislike Asura for this reason)
Logan – Why? Because where else would we get our thread of Thackery jokes from?
Let’s face, THE ENTIRETY OF DESTINY’S EDGE.
Jenna – She gains like points for being able to make an illusion of an Elder Dragon. That takes some serious power and gets her some of my respect.
Warmaster Forgal – His dialogue is so witty that it’s hard NOT to like him.
etc.
Basically, got a long list of faves, barely any dislikes.
