As a warrior, I can say my 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 rotation worked perfectly well in dungeons and fractals, except I had to fit some dodges in sometimes. But I would say 1-dodge-1-1-1-1-1-1-dodge-1-1-1-1 is still not exactly a fun way to play (though very effective).

…Not using your adrenaline move at all? That’s a bit weird.

Axe/Dagger?

Sarrs.4831

I tried a max Cripple build sorta thing with axe/warhorn and dagger/dagger for a little while and it was kinda fun. I mean, I didn’t do anything seriously with it, but I think I roughly broke even in sPvP with it. Someone who actually puts effort towards their output might be more qualified to answer?

I also don’t think you should strictly worry about how much damage your offhand weapon does. I can definitely see merit behind using the focus as well for those delicious stacks of Vulnerability.

For reference, I used 30/20/0, with either 0/20 or 20/0 on the end, depending on whether I felt like using Wells or Spectral toys. Spectral seemed to work a bit better but if you can make Wells work all the more power to you.

Is it still trendy to tell people to gb2wow?

All kidding aside, I kinda like that rotations vary in their practical applications, and that not every class presses every button to do a DPS rotation. I’m kind of a fan of not having to stay 100% on top of my rotation to play the game. It’s true that a complicated DPS rotation adds depth, but depth can be added in other ways.

Being able to click through a few potential buttons might be nice, though, like you can change between your skills? You should be able to click an arrow above your 1/2/3/4/5 and change it to something else. Like if you’re a necro with a tootyhorn, you can change your daze toot to a fear toot.

Upcoming WvW Update... Make or Break?

in WvW

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I agree with the person who said to make the maps larger. My friends and I (who played DAOC) have always agreed that the WvW maps were too small. It makes it really easy to zerg, which has it’s time and place, but zerging is just so strong right now. It’s really hard for the smaller groups.

A lot of people I know are waiting for this WvW patch to make or break the game for them. I’ve burnt myself out on GW2’s PVE content, all I have left for myself is it’s WvW.

Will making the maps larger actually help to stop the zerg, though? I don’t understand the reasoning, here. Unless more waypoints are placed around the maps, it’ll take just as long for a defensive force to arrive as it will for the attacking zerg- It’ll be even worse because your response time is delayed, even.

This isn’t to say I wouldn’t like larger maps, but I don’t see how it’d solve this particular occurrence.

How to explore w/o realm hop?

You could wait until your server has cycled through each color, and get each of the corresponding sites. Alternatively, play a lot of WvWvW and get the exploration points after capturing the objectives you need.

It’s kind of a bummer if you left WvWvW until last to do, but there’s not a hell of a lot you can do about it now.

Remove the Swords, Stop the Zerg

in WvW

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

On the one hand, it’d make it a bit more immersive to actually have to place scouts/sentries/etc around the map.

On the other hand, sitting around waiting for things to happen is boring as sin, and it makes the game’s in-built defenses even more useless. +Guard upgrades at camps are supposed to make that speedbump bigger, but if there aren’t any swords you don’t even know they’re being driven over.

I could see it if people were more happy to play defensive roles, but without some kind of incentive to do so, I can’t really see it happening.

Necros can be very useful in sieges with Marks and Wells, comfortably solo camps with zombie minions and tough enough to roam. I don’t know whether it’s the best choice, that’s ultimately up to you, but they’re definitely a very good choice.

I’m also a fan of Juggernaut Engi, which may be more of a thing I have for fire than anything actually practical, and Longbow Warrior, which is much the same.

Fear now affected by defiant huge nerf

in Necromancer

Sarrs.4831

By the same argument, rock golems shouldn’t suffer from bleeding or poison. Zhaitan should be immune to any physical damage due to “heroic armor”. etc

…Really? I thought the logic being used here was “controlling effects are affected by Defiance, Fear is a controlling effect, therefore Fear should be affected by Defiance”, not “crazy bullkitten”.

I know you feel jipped by Necromancers being a buggy class, but if you chuck a tantrum whenever they fix something that worked in your favour, they’re not going to do it for very long. If you think Necros need a super duper Defiance workaround then maybe the problem isn’t Fear, it’s Defiance.

Gold/Gem exchange rate is making me sad

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I think the rising gold:gem ratio is natural. Inflation is a very powerful force, and the supply of gems was significantly artificially inflated during the first few weeks when the Trading Post was down. It’ll eventually stabilize, or it’ll continue to rise, at which point we’ll see more sinks.

Gold to gems is not intended to be a stable transaction. Real money to gems is supposed to be stable.

The pinnacle of WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I wouldn’t say transfers are the problem. Transfers are the symptom.

The problem is population-based PvP mode.

WvW is basically bigger Fort Aspenwood from GW1 except one side can have 100 people while other has only 10. And the side that has 10 has to work on mass transfers, not skill, tactics, organization.

I’m inclined to say it’s the other way; population issues are a result of the matchmaking system not doing its job, which is a result of transfer limitations not doing their job. If the guesting system were actually live, and transfers actually tied to gems as they’re intended to be, doing these massive guild transfers would be punitive and thus enjoy a real preventative measure(though it would make the status quo financially rewarding to ANet; whether this is a good thing is questionable). I don’t think locking transfers to a longer CD would fix the problem; a month’s CD would just cause them to change their targets to a lower server so their cycle of imbalancing power matches that time.

At any rate, the problem still really needs a fix.

Sarrs.4831

There certainly doesn’t need to be an increase in anything. ANYTHING AT ALL. What does Blizzard put into WoW when they raise the level cap, and what can ANet do to counter it?

New abilities: Put them in the existing skill system as new things to buy. For weapon skills, add new weapons, or come up with a new system; if Anet wants to rip off WoW, they could probably rip off the pet levelling abilities for the existing weapons.

New zones: What’s the level-down system implemented for, if not this?

New talents: If Anet really wants to raise the trait cap, then that might be a good reason to raise the level cap. If Anet wants to put in new traits, then they can just put them into the current trait slots as new options. If Anet wants to give players more slots for traits, they can upgrade the minor slots.

More stats, more health, more blah blah blah: This is explicitly put into the game so that the playing field, when it comes to stats and particularly the stats granted by highest tier raiding gear, is reset.

So, here’s my question: ANet decided on their manifesto because they knew they couldn’t beat Blizzard at their own game. This is a step towards playing Blizzard’s game. How is this a good idea?

GW2 vs. Simplicity & Functionality

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sarrs.4831

Its not the step tha’ts the issue, its the actual overall graphics/placement of the thing. It looks kitten and out of place. Generally people read more in the center of the screen as opposed to the top. Or even to the left so I can see whats going on in the center of my screen.
The layout in general is just horrid. It defies everything anyone will ever teach you about picture/text placement in school or the real world.

Your one piece of praise for the game is the graphical design. Your criticism of this system is the graphical design. I don’t have my client available at the moment, so forgive me for my lack of certainty, but for the point of the physical positioning/arrangement of the window, can’t you move it to alleviate the problems you’re having with it?

As well, the actual buying/selling of items is stupid tiny in images/text. There are so many better and more innovative ways to go about this.

Again, unavailable client, but can you size up these items? I have difficulty believing this is a serious problem unless you have a poor choice of resolution or a sight condition, and you didn’t address the point of mechanical simplicity rather than aesthetic design in your first post.

Taking it a step further, where are my options to see player health bars ON my screen not on the top left. And how come I can’t see cast bars, etc, so I know when to place my stuns? Sure, in WvW that wouldn’t work, but for the other PvP modes (and even PvE) its nice to be able to time things.

This actually sounds like a genuine issue. Mind, not one of the ones you originally raised, or relevant to any of the points I’ve brought up…

If I can’t understand the overall issue that you’re apparently talking about, it’s because you’re not talking about the overall issue. I’m getting this general vibe of you obscuring what you’re saying; whether you’re doing this intentionally or unintentionally, I don’t know, but it makes it very difficult to see you as anything other than someone attacking blindly.

To clarify on Ascended Gear...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

It’s not just one tier, in that post by arenanet, it’s the FIRST level that is coming, which implies there will be more coming and all future armors coming will be using the ascended system.

I dunno if I’m the only one who thinks this, but

As we watch Guild Wars 2 mature in its Live environment, we have found that our most dedicated players were achieving their set of Exotic gear and hitting “the Legendary wall.” We designed the process of getting Legendary gear to be a long term goal, but players were ready to start on that path much sooner than we expected and were becoming frustrated with a lack of personal progression.

is phrased kind of weirdly. I’m kind of thinking what she meant to say was that blues and greens were trivial, yellow was a pittance on the Trading Post and exotics take a little while but ultimately aren’t too hard, and then you have a GINORMOTRONIC distance to cover to get your legendary. Exotics are basically the Heroic 5-man gear of GW2, and that doesn’t push into anything. This, of course, makes the fundamental mistake of assuming that the gear is the reason to do the content…

I definitely think that the tiers of gear could have a better spread. Does that mean a new one’s needed? Maybe. But it doesn’t sit right with me; I can’t help but feel that making dungeons more consistently rewarding outside of giving you tokens, and a more consistent experience insofar as difficulty, would be a better investment than trying to poke in a new tier of gear 3 days before a patch goes live. This should have been announced a year ago, otherwise you get this exact reaction.

Another "Remove DS" Thread: Pacts REVISITED

in Necromancer

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I think Death Shroud would mostly work fine if it was just a weapon swap+healthbar swap. The problem is that it locks you out of your utilities, it isn’t worthwhile for Condition necromancers, and Transform abilities (most notably Plague and Lich, but racial elites as well) lock you out of Death Shroud, and thus, your best survival button.

I’d probably be thinking about attaching a clicky above Death Shroud and allowing you to choose between a few different Shrouds depending on which build you are; Conditionmancer might use, say, Plague Shroud, and maybe add a third one for melee. Let’s call it Spectral Shroud, I don’t know. Not sure if they even need it.

Enable utility/elite skills while in Death Shroud, and maybe give the Spectral abilities an alternate effect while in Death Shroud since they are removed when you enter DS.

I’ve also got no problem with people rezzing, it makes someone push more often leading to more intensity with enemy players on both sides. Seeing someone down is when my heart beats faster… it’s almost a kill… can I get them dead before someone helps them? Dare I push toward a stomp for quicker access?

Games need rollercoasters and that rez feature is a rollercoaster, for the downed person and the players trying to eat them.

I’ve seen it likened to why the mushrooms in Mario scroll to the right; they’re something to chase. But yes, I think this is definitely one of the better reasons to keep the downed state in the game- It’s an opportunity which carries a risk.

Without looking deeply into it, I think the only problem with the downed state in WvWvW(in PvP in general, even) is Rallying. It allows you to completely ignore defense in favour of pure offense to kill opponents and cause Rallies.

There are some imbalances that need to be addressed; some classes have great 2s and 3s, other classes not so much. I’m sure some people could pick out which ones they are; I don’t know all of them. The only one that I can immediately think of is Warrior 3 in conjunction with their Discipline trait that allows them to rally while using it; that can turn close fights into easy wins, though I might not be dealing with it properly.

With a undergeared group (not even full masterwork) these boss fights can drag on for a solid 20-30 minutes. This is not an exaggeration, I have timed it.

Aside from Andal the Vandal and the last on-land boss in P3, that’s about right- Insofar as boring. They still have too much health.

It’s generic fantasy, why would it have to make any sense? How do you explain how characters can change size and mass, appear tiny or twice as big? Where is the additional mass coming from? I’ll tell you where, from the same place the additional siege costs will come from! :P

Generic fantasy does not equal making up random bollocks

Also, does it make sense your catapult can damage people through a gate, without damaging the gate itself?

A gameplay mechanic which is undoubtedly unintended; do you really think that allowing friendly fire would be a good idea? Admittedly, it would make the zerg much more interesting.

At the very least, players should not be able to damage gates/walls, they should require siege equipment. If an opponent is determined enough and has great enough numbers, they can destroy maximum-upgrade barriers for zero cost, which skews the resource game heavily in their favor.

Can players damage walls? The only fortification that’s at any real risk of falling from too many warm bodies is the wooden door; reinforced gates either take too long or too many people for them to really qualify as “easy to capture”. (I’d love to see raw numbers on how many people it takes to get a reinf gate down in however much time.)

If you’re getting majorly outmanned during the night hours then that’s, well… The only way to “fix” that is with huge overhauls to WvWvW.

So much negativity lately. Is GW2 doomed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sarrs.4831

Sarrs.4831

I’m going to say one thing. This game can’t survive low populations purely out of design. DE’s and WE’s are already empty, regularly on what is labled often as a full server but never bellow high. As higher level players wont pay to play in low level zones with high level investments (repairs and waypoints) filling out lower zones will always be a problem without constant influx of new players, thus leaving large portions of the world, underpopulated for purpose.

I suppose, with a loyal enough base, re-rolls or new characters will sustain the game for some period of time but in the long run the same problem will occur.

Is it dying? No. Is it thriving? No.

I like this. I got MOP and a month’s subscription on a whim, and I was musing on the CRZ feature for quite a while.

It’s a terrible feature in WoW. With how the community is, it actively encourages antisocial behaviour. It was more fun to be in abandoned zones than in populated ones simply because of how party/tagging/etc mechanics work.

It would be an absolutely beautiful feature in GW2 because the game actively encourages having a large number of warm bodies participating in DEs.

Not exactly perfectly relevant to the thread but I thought it was an interesting irony.
