all games have grind!

It’s true but some people on this forum like to exaggerate things. Every mmo has you grinding some instance for gear or grinding out materials for crafting or grinding out some pvp instance for currency to buy armor. I wouldn’t even call this game a grind because it extremely easy to obtain things here minus the legendary weapons. But those are suppose to take a while to get just like Obsidian took a while to get in GW Prophecies.

I like how you say minus legendary weapons because that is a huge part of the game. Exotics and the new stuff are all going to be a huge grind as well. Also people seem to have to keep farming dungeons. That is called a grind.

So I have no clue what game you are playing but GW2 is a huge grind.

I left out legendary because right now they are prestige items (just like obsidian armor in GWP) and aren’t needed to obtain max weapon stats at all. They are there for people who want the look. So yeah i said minus legendary. You know what a huge grind is? Playing Aion and running instances for years and never seeing a thing from them because bosses had a very high chance to drop absolutely nothing. My ex ran Adma Stronghold for 2 years and not once did she get lannoks staff (made a huge difference in pvp). I mean this game is so easy and the “grind” is voluntary.

I agree all games do have a grind.

GW1
– Had an acceptable grind
– Players were able to get max level stats and play everything in the game with their friends rather quickly.
– Armor was about looks not stats.
– We were able to have as many alternate characters as we wanted.

GW2
– Unacceptable grind, I find it more like a Korean MMO rather and a Western AAA title.
– We are now grinding for gear and stats.
– making harder to level alternate characters.

“Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games.”
- Mike Obrien

You were “grinding” for gear and stats before fractals came out. You weren’t given a full exotic set at 80 so you had to either craft it, buy it from the TP, run instances to get it or WvW your way to the highest armor stats.

Go play another game if you don’t like this on, me and many other’s (game one plenty of awards this year so its doing something right… or at lest better than the other game’s this year))

Consider it a place between outright hate and drooling unconditional love.

we like the basic ideas, and some of the implementations, but feel the overall end result comes short of the claimed goals.

So we hang around trying to point out potential flaws and improvements to ANet.

What you see as a potential flaw may not be for some one else. A lot of you are spouting your opinion as fact and its getting a bit ridiculous.

Yes, but that is a bad design if you are building a game to last. A new player is going to have a hard enough time trying to get a feel for the game with low level areas devoid of life and will get even more frustrated by impossible quests that were designed to be done with large groups that would have only ever been found during the launch of the game. If you start to cut off the supply of fresh players the game stagnates and won’t last very long.

Also, let’s not invoke realism in a game where I can be shot in the face with a gun and be totally okay.

The devs have already acknowledged that they need to do something to get more people into lower level zones and im confident they will act on it. But for the article to say that dynamic events are REQUIRED to level is just false. Theyre an added extra that are not on the main map and lower level players are encouraged to complete the renown hearts and map completion. Dynamic events arent needed and im sure anyone with an ounce of common sense would realise this before quitting the game.

Umm Dynamic Events are required to level. You can’t just do 100% map completion. You will never net enough experience to move on to the next area if you just do that. You have to do Dynamic Events to get enough experience to level and move on.

And they are not an “added extra”. They are your main source of experience while leveling. Dynamic Events provide more experience than anything else on the map. They are your “quest” when compared to other MMOs.

No Dynamic Events are not required when you can level up to 80 on crafting alone and through WvW. Heck you can level all the way to 80 by just rezzing people if you have the patience.

In 2011 we had The Witcher 2, Skyrim and Deus Ex:HR, all excellent games and all worthy of GOTY.

This year we had squat. The only big release was ME3, and look what happened there…

If GW2 was released last year, it would not have received a sniff of a chance. Anet were fortunate 2012 was a dud year for releases.

Exactly right.

This is not an RPG deserving of that title, guys.

It is actually. Your welcome to your opinion though.

Nov. Monthly Achievement Alienates Casuals

We are not this games demographic. They dont want us or our money. It is very clear now who they want – see Lindsays post.
They want uber elite grinders who spend hour after hour/day grinding in the dungeon for shiny +5 stats.
Why else would they implement dungeon based on gating and treadmill. Not for the casuals I can tell you that. Why spend dev time if it wasnt a priority right?

They are who Anet want – we dont belong here and that is made clear by the silence.
WOT got a nice investment of $200 since Anet doesnt want me or my money.

Could you be more of a drama queen. This game is about as casual as an mmorpg could be. The only thing that would take a while is legendary weapons and some of the unique mystic weapons/armor skins.

Scourge.4317

I really enjoy playing Guild Wars 2, but the November Monthly Achievement is not something myself, or many other casual players will be able to complete.

The single chunk of time to complete 1 dungeon is more than I am able to invest. Dungeons aren’t designed for casual players from the perspective of time investment and difficulty. I saw an interview near launch that stated the Daily and Monthly Achievements were design to help casual players keep up by getting fast experience every day — this is no longer true .

This change alienates a significant portion of your player base so you should strongly consider the time investment task you put into the Monthly Achievement for December.

Serious?. It takes like 20-25 minutes to do 1 path of CoF that would count to your monthly. Same with TA and HoTW takes about 1 hour tops. These forums are filled with a bunch of whining kitten people i swear. How easy do they have to make the instances to satisfy people like you?

What gets me are the ones that feel the need to let everyone know they are quitting. Its never constructive i never see anyone try to have a civil discussion about what they think would make what they don’t like better. Its always “these features are terribad and the game is going to sink if its not changed”. And the ones that try to bring others into their pit of sorrow going on about what they hate then asking if anyone else hates it like they do. How does that help make the game better? How is it constructive?

There have been many constructive post but they always get pushed off the front page and disappear.

The best GW1 character select screen was the prophecies one:

http://fireden.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/character_selection_screen.jpg

Showed all your characters on one screen. After that they removed them and changed it up to show one character at a time on a pedestal. And it pretty much stayed like this for the rest of the game only changing the background.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/5/54/Factions_character_selection_screen.jpg

Just like GW1, they probably wont let us have the super awesome one again.

I have been looking for a video of the prophecies login screen for so long. I remember clicking and seeing that campfire the day the game launched and the music that played with it. Maybe its on the GW1 disk? Hmmm…

Coz, dungeons are terrible, spvp is pathetic and wvw is doorbashing. So where is this FUN that was promoted ??

Im sorry man but u sound like bad commercial.

Guilds are not tied to any specific world; all players can join any guild regardless of which world they play on. However, influence and guild upgrades are specific to each world: players in the same guild but on different worlds will contribute to separate influence pools and build through separate upgrade trees.

If only you did a little research before jumping servers like the rest of the people who give up and ditch their server to make another ones WvW queue longer.

That info has been there for a while cant blame anyone but yourselves.

Verticle progression would be a start. Hell any progression is better that what’s there now. There isn’t even horizontal progression. There is a sort of cosmetic grind, but even this seems tacked on and very limited.

Plenty of other games out there that offer that. The cosmetic grind has been been around since Guild Wars Prophecies. And it has worked wonderfully for the last 7 years so why change it to be like every other mmo currently available? Explain why its tacked on and limited? I don’t see that at all. It gets rather ridiculous when people keep asking for this game to change when its been advertise and known to be this way for a couple of years now.

I mean a lot of the skins are locked away in the mystic forge… and the dungeon sets are more of a grind than real challenge to get. I don’t think that was true in GW1.

There are plenty of armor sets in GW1 that require lots of time to get. Obsidian being one of the most time consuming sets. Just like it takes lots of time to get legendary and mystic forge items. Well i guess luck would be more appropriate for some of the mystic items but you get what i mean i hope!

MMO's need a grind but not for fluff

I came to this game totally understanding that sPvP was where stats and gear would not matter. With this in mind, I already knew that WvW would be where my time would be spent. After I hit 80 I then realized all gear has basically the same stats and has no effort what so ever to get. Ironically the gear that has possibly the biggest grind to it (WvW) just looks incredibly dull and boring.

I am one of those players that gets hooked by having that carrot dangled in front of you. I rarely get the best gear in MMOs and constantly face people better geared than me, but that never discourages me… it just makes me want that gear more. The cool looking skins are nice, but if thats all gear has then it will get very boring very fast.

If Anet was smart, they would leave the sPvP for the people not into gear treadmills and WvW could be for the people who enjoy earning something with better stats. If this game doesn’t implement something to work toward, then I really doubt it will hold my interest very long. But then again since I am not paying monthly, I really doubt Anet cares to capture the interest of players like myself.

I am starting to get the feeling that this is more of a carebear version of a real MMO, suited for very casual and non competitive players.

No, WvW is already pretty bad on some servers where people are abandoning and joining the winning sides. Think about how kittened up it would be with top servers having the majority of their players running around with the kind if gear your talking about.

If you guys really want the gear grind there are plenty of other MMORPG’s out there for you to choose from. Hell go play Aion its free to play with no gimmicks and you can go balls crazy with the grind till you achieve your T2 Lv60 pvp set and pvp accessories. They even have 12 man pve raids for your type with a drop rate that will make you want smash your pc.

I experienced it in Aion on Zikel server and I DO NOT WANT THAT HERE.

I logged back into WoW the other day on a 7 day free trial (I haven’t played since Feb. 2011.) I was shocked and depressed. I had forgot how much WoW ability system and combat has on GW2.

It’s a fricken shame how limited this game is in abilities, which in turn limits the depth of combat. Don’t give me that bull about combo fields either. Combo fields could be a good part of the combat if for example Whirl A did X in combo field N , and Whirl B did Y in combo field N. As it stands Whirl A,B,C,D,E all do X in combo field N.

It’s so simple it almost seems incomplete. This is the game for people who complained that Gladiators had better gear, and who liked 31 point talent trees.

Nice generalizing there BcBully. Since your precious Secrete world bombed you’ve been going on about how bad this game is here and on mmorpg forum. WoW combat is about the simplest combat in the genre. More simple than SW and more simple than GW2. Arcane mages spaming 1 skill and 3 button rogues, so complex.

I don’t understand why the vocal minority are trying sokittenhard to change this game into another copy cat. Scourge.4317

Its an unfortunate occurrence in all forums in all games where the naysayers dominate the conversation, while those people that like the game rarely post or even bother with forums.

Which gives the illusion that “everyone” is horribly dissatisfied with the game. When its really a pretty small percentile.

It’s definitely the outspoken minority vs the silent majority, which makes sense. People are going to be less inclined to voice opinions if they’re positive as opposed to soap-boxing inane issues.

This “Vocal Minority” ends up being the majority like most failed MMOs, this is the same defence rubbish you get it every one of these forums.

Reality here is this game is missing a gigantic element of what makes an MMO so good in the more popular ways of the genre.

The reality is also that there is no reason for it really not to exist in this game either.

So we are fighting for it.

Its you people that say “its fine, let them leave in droves” that are going to long term harm this game.

What exactly is this gigantic missing element you speak of?

The game has been out for some time now, not a long time, but enough that some players have been max level for a while or have utilized aspects of the game that no longer can be used.

Does this leave the new player who might be playing the game as “it’s meant to be played” in the dust because players have been able to get a jump not only in time played but were able to get gear/levels/gold in ways that are impossible now?

Are you serious? this game just came out like a little over 3 weeks ago. What is with these kitten threads.

i think most if not ALL people complaining about lack of “endgame” are the no-lifers who play too much.
and no game right now can deal with them.
i say they can quit.
come back later, the door will always be open.

i have pity for them.
they really are the ones hurting themselves more.
and then saying the problem is the game? after like 300h in 3 weeks.

anyway.
GW2 is amazing, huge, and perfectly fine for a gamer who will spend 15h a week in the game. (thats normal, right?)

Such a cop out… This game should have been designed AND released with ALL of its customers in mind. This includes the “no lifers”. Everyone knew that people were going to rush to 80. Everyone knew there was going to be people competing for world firsts.

You can’t say that the hardcore community is too small to worry about either…its a rather large portion of the customer base…far to big to ignore and be successful.

Im guessing you aren’t at level cap and don’t see how truly broken and under developed/polished this game is.

Also …no one cares if you play 1 hour or 100 hours a week. They care about how much they play. A successful MMO will target all playstyles and 80 is very…very easy to get.

No mmorpg will ever be designed with “no lifers” in mind. No matter what devs do those people will always rush to the end and a lot of them will then turn around and say something along the lines of “reached level cap, nothing to do”. It never fails.

Is it a genuine game problem or is your perspective skewed?

Thats not “wow kiddies” thats the new gen of players and the new gen of players needs to be fronted with a new gen of game development.

SWTOR, WAR, AION, AOC, ug…im not going to name ALL the flops but jfc…

None of those games, including this one, did not do very well (post release) on the important issues. They weren’t ready for them! Ill give GW2 credit they were initially pretty responsive but 60+ content is wrecked and I dont think they planned very well when it comes to smaller issues like, bots, economy problems, content bugs/exploits, graphics optimization, and class balance to name a few.

The new gen of player is not going to wait around for all these huge fixes. They’d rather wait for a finished product. If they don’t get it they will go right back to “Insert last MMO here”

Aion may not have done that well in the US/EU but its a very successful game in the East so you can drop that.

I miss real open world pvp too, going someplace to pvp is not open world pvp

I don’t miss it at all. Ganking people who are just trying to quest gets boring as hell after a while and it drives many low level players away from the game before they even reach level cap ( looking at you Aion ). At least when you go to WvW you know everyone there is there for a fight.
