Look. To. Your. Metagame.

If you want to worry about sPvP, cut out the focus on bells an whistles and get things settled first. Hotjoin is a zerg filled mess, tournaments are good enough becaue of the reduced group size but clearly favor certain compositions (and not for synergy but because some classes really are that high on the tier compared to others, outside of very specific builds in very specific hands). You get more points for zerging about and killing than doing the things necessary to win the match. Incentivize objective playing and not ad hoc deathmatches.

It’s messy. It’s all over the board and utterly spastic. And you want to take the time to shill your new game additions to us instead of look to managing your game? Look at your nerfs. 15% to PW? That wasn’t the problem. CD increase to Illusions? All of this tells me that for all the claims of playing, you don’t play your own game enough to see what’s in front of you.

It’s sad because it’s the first time for us, to my knowledge and the problem seems to be spreading around WvW more and more. There were hacks last week (from GoM). People are posting about more of it happening in other matches and from other realms in this match even. It’s like some sort of spreading virus. You’d think that after it happening so many weeks on so many servers, there’d be more decisive action to end all the occurrences

The rendering thing at least makes sense. That’s some type of server issue that they need to figure out. This stuff? It’s blatant abuse and cheating and reporting it doesn’t seem to be doing much.

For now, let’s do what we can to police ourselves and just keep the match going, I suppose. I know we’ve all enjoyed it. If we’re careful, we can keep this going in spite of setbacks.

For as communicative as Anet tries to be, they have a major way to say a lot without saying much interesting things. Knowing new developments moving forward is nice but the fact that they seem to have a terrible understanding of how to deal with some real fundamental issues in their game.

I think people are still excited for the match but I do think that something definitely went wrong. Allies weren’t seeing allies, people weren’t seeing enemies. And I’m sure that it hit everyone to varying degrees. It’s sort of a shame that, as fun as WvW is, it suffers from thing really major flaw.

You and I’ve had some very difference experiences in Borderlands. Bare minimum, there actually is a general commander assignment for each zone. Or, rather, generally we do have certain guilds dedicated to certain zones. Larger issue has always been entrenching properly at a position rather than, say, a lack of leadership. We’ve some people who are over eager. CD’s done the right thing by digging in and basically sticking to what they have.

Also, it’s DB. Like DB Cooper. They’re up, what, about 6k, tops? Compare that deficit to the deficit DB and TC face against Crystal Desert. It’s really not a major issue yet. Queues are full, with the exception that I think DB’s focusing a bit more on CD’s borderlands than we are but that doesn’t really stay that way completely.

Borderlands have been generally where the DB and TC are able to make the most strides, seems to be. EB has looked pretty consistent throughout the match from what I can tell.

Still using S/P. Haven’t encountered too many issues. Time will tell. The nerf to the set was not the smart way to address the issue but the weapon set can still be made plenty viable if smart. Over reliance on PW was foolish, even before this.

I sincerely doubt that it is a group of people transferring servers throughout the match. There’s been some issues all around but the easier solution is that all three server have a handful of people doing stupid and outright egregious things. Let’s all, regardless of server, do want we can to figure this out, report who we need to, and do what needs to be done.

the orb was hacked again just now, altar was broken… you just can’t play if you don’t cheat , right TC ?

It’s the tiresome defense but leave “TC” out of it and consider the act of the individual. Respond as you want but you know what, leave your snide accusations alone. I very much doubt a commander on the field was like “Hey, hacker guy. Now’s the time.”

This is a thread for talking about the match without being jerks. Let’s try to keep it that way. If this happened, let’s identify the guild or the player and figure out how to make it end. No one wants this.

I resent the implication that this is a common thing. Before this match, I’d never heard of orb exploiting on this server.

Yeah, Xyrm….you realize everyone is assuming that each group has some sort of pact. And it’s all crap. DB will attack a keep when TC’s done the work, poaching the capture. CD will ignore a TC group wiping out DB siege points. People pick and choose their targets in the moment.

Everyone’s been pointing fingers. It’s what people do. And I’ve yet to see a point where it’s been actual.

“Quickness is not a problem at all. I don’t know what all of you are talking about when you say that they shouldn’t reduce damage but instead remove quickness.”

Don’t remove. Reduce speed increase, increase time. PW damage was not the issue it was the rate at which the damage could be delivered. The same with Warriors and Thousand Blades. This change, contrary to what people say, doesn’t make S/P immensely less viable. Or even Pistol Whip because it has other benefits (and only really one negative: the self root).

But…

It is the wrong nerf.

No, really guys. Balance and the meta is fine! Go back to bed! We got this!

Here’s the thing: certain classes need to be looked at. Some need some nerfs, others need buffs but when Anet’s been making changes, they’re not making the right ones. Cooldown changes, a 15% reduction in damage. These are not the issues and these nerfs have negligible effect because they’re not targeting the actual issues.

EDIT: You know, I actually missed a comment I should have said You know who still does balance better than this? The Old Republic. And I know that for most people that game is a punchline but even those devs generally manage to figure out relevant issues with classes and address them.

Yeah…um…some classes and builds might counter Mesmers fairly well but…yeah, no. This nerf still was fairly ineffective. It’s not hard to find a real mesmer among clones or anything really but even with this CD, people can toss out a lot of stuff still. It doesn’t do much.

The nerf of this patch addressed all the issues poorly, from what they did to Pistol Whip to this and even the Guardian changes. The affect on the metagame is negligible and the changes are not affecting issues properly.

Night runs extensive but people need to sleep eventually since it is, the last time I checked, an essential bodily function and people do have things to do other than crap, eat, and live in WvW for a day. Normal folks, anyway. If you think that we’ve really thrown in the towel or anything, I’d reassess that. What we lose we tend to make up and we’ve given DB a close point race for most of the match. DB got kitten low in potential points for stretch. Which is generally what we want; I don’t know what hours you’ve been doing things but last night, when I was playing, we gave them a fair run for their money. As for rumors of CD and DB teaming up, it’s the first I’ve heard of it and I generally doubt that’s the case. DB want’s easy points and CD want’s a lockout, facing attacks on two sides it going to happen. Besides which, there’ve been times where CD’s actually been amiable to pursue generally separate goals than TC in certain borderlands.

We’ve closed gaps bigger than this during the match and we still have about 4 days. Win or lose, we’ve acquitted ourselves considerable well against Dragonbrand in particular.

PISTOL WHIP IS THE ONLY SKILL ON THE BAR THAT DOES CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE

Properly set up and with the correct build an auto attack chain can hit with the following percentage benefits:

10% damage increase if Endurance isn’t full, 10% damage increase when attacking from the side or behind with the correct runes plus an addition 5% with a 7% increase to crit if traited, 10% damage increase when Initiative is over six, and 20% if the enemy is below half health. Now, I don’t know if you just add those all up. I don’t know how those percentages stack up. I’m not a math person. I majored in Theater and English. But I know that they offer a significant boost to attack power.

Yes, Pistol Whip is the weapon set’s only real burst skill but with the right degree of set up, finesse, and situation awareness, and build, the weapon set retains a lot of power. Boring power, I’ll admit. Not dynamic, combat wise.

Hopefully the reduction keeps the burst reasonable and still effective given the skills other benefits, particularly the stun. The real issue comes if they touch PW anymore, although admittedly the change might have been too great. This is an appeasement move, yes. The issue was with Quickness (which only needs minor tweaking) but I think that PW can still retain some effectiveness if set up well.

S/P will still be viable even with this. Spamming PW isn’t smart, never was. It’s a skill best used with a proper set up.

The major issue was never with the skill but it’s synergy with Quickness (but that’s not a problem limited to just thieves and no, the mechanics doesn’t need any changes besides maybe a skill speed reduction to 1.5x and a longer duration in exchange; remember that all Haste skills for all classes have penalties). The damage reduction stresses this and is intended to counter that.

“Smells like an appeasement nerf, I think.”

The damage reduction will make a difference of PW. And it’s clear that they’re not really messing with Quickness right now and I don’t think they need to (at best, lower rate of attack speed and buff length). That said, if a thief uses that skill combination (Haste with PW), they’ve generally burned through Init. and Endurance. It’s not hard for a team to deal with them.

Point update for those interested. I do regret hearing about the orb business earlier this evening though. Botherkittenreatly. No one here condones that. Crystal Desert’s well ahead but Dragonbrand and Tarnished Coast are pretty much right by each other. I can’t speak for other borderlands or EB but action in the ’Brand borderlands tonight has been good. Lots of offensive pushes by all and a fair share of repelled sieges.

Took out two trebs posted at the Dragonbrand garrison with some surgical balista action and, if we want to start swapping war stories, I’ll give ya one more. It involves some smacktalk but I hope the person took it in good faith because I’ve chatted with folks from both realms and ya’ll seem nice and hope you understand it is in the spirit of competition (although I admit to an irrational hatred of Dragonbrand, mostly due to the last time the realms clashed).

Three Dragonbrand Invaders walk towards a bayside keep (stop me if you know this one alright)…and see a single Charr with a cannon. Okay. Simple enough. I forget the next part of the joke but two of them go down and the only one left is a Guardian dodging cannonballs, trying to revive his allies.

“I can do this all night.” the Charr tells him.
“Same.” replies the Guardian.

A few more cannons fly, the guardian is dodging. The Charr gets off the cannon and the Guardian moves towards one of his fallen allies, who is laying near the wall of the keep. The Charr jumps off, blindsides him and kills him. Right before she kills him, she tells him again.

“All. Night.”

Nothing amazing, I know. But still, we all have moments we enjoy. Share, if you want! Heck, for all I know it could have been when one of you killed me!

The entire server didn’t hack it. The person has been reported, and, from what I understand, a member of his own guild frapsed it and submitted the video to Anet.

Don’t paint with such large strokes.

Tiresome defense. People know the whole server didn’t hack. People aren’t idiots. But the entire server benefits. Reporting’s gained little ground in this matter, regardless of server. So at this point, even if it is a single guild or person or whatever, it’s pretty much like painting a big target on the realm that says “Yes, we want to be focus fired.”

It’s certainly building a reputation, unfortunately. You’d think ANet would deal with this issue. I know it’s not everyone on the server (and, for the record, I’ve hated that defense anyway; if there’s something egregious, the other realms can most certainly turn to focus on GoM or any other server that had an exploiter if they want to try and regain what was taken from them)…but this has been happening with a level of consistency in matches at this point which is truly disappointing.

That would mean easy points for db that can really use them.

But you’re not really grabbing onto much of that supposed opportunity, are you? You poach. I mean, sometimes it works. Just did on your boarderlands with Ascension Bay. But face to face against another enemy? That’s another question entirely. Without a significantly entrenched position or numerical advantage (and even sometimes with that) forces push ‘Brand back. CD or TC, from what I can observe. In fact, the number of times I’ve seen Dragonbrand invaders seems to be directly proportional to the times the Coast has been attacking a CD target.

So, I mean, what does that say? You could argue that letting other people doing the heavy lifting for you is smart. If you really only care about the end result, which is certainly one way to look at things. But it also tell us that you’re wary of Crystal Desert. Almost even afraid. And, potentially, not particularly great on the offensive if the major tactic is merely to wait until one force has put on a good show and then to swoop in like vultures.

If the latter were the case and you were overly strong on the attack, the point differential and potential points wouldn’t remain as consistently close as they are. It’s really just the realm enjoying the benefits of that singular night push, which they haven’t managed again.

The issue with Mesmers and Thieves is more to do with player culling than anything else, really.

As for this match, I admit that I think they way CD’s locked things down is pretty impressive. And for DB and TC, I’m certainly glad that there’s still competitiveness. ~8000 points seems like a big difference but over the course of a few days, that’s still something that can be pressured and approached as well as something that can be defended and held.

Week longs have sort of really stressed the fact, at least for me, that a lot of things can happen in a day. Hell, we saw it with the big CD push after Dragonbrand’s initial grasp of the lead. We even saw it that first day with all the flipping back and forth.

I suppose that’s my way of noting that I enjoy the point spread here than I have from a few previous matches where people got completely locked out and were holding, like, one camp. For DB and TC, it doesn’t quite feel that way.

Fun’s in the fight anyway. I think we can all sort of attest to that. Runaway wins are boring just as much for those on the top as those on the bottom. And until its down to that last second, I think that everyone here (TC, DB, or CD) is going put up a hell of a fight.

Sharpclaw.7510

I’m just hopeing for a good solid fight all week long as owning it all or owning nothing both stink.

Yeah, I think we’ve all be on both sides of that equation by this point. I’m hoping that the relative competition persists and that there’s a continued level of good fight. I’ll be diplomatic though when I say that I hope a good defense can be mustered to Dragonbrand’s off hours attacks. By both Coast and Desert.

Granted, we’re seeing this right now in the daytime with CD, and even somewhat with TC working up the potential points chain. But I suppose I’m saying that I rather hope that the spikes don’t become pronounced enough to eventually be the thing that affects the match. Having just come off of the TC/SoS/GoM match, the rubberbanding there was disappointing, I think. Until there finally was a decisive pushback to stifle SoS on a key night.

Who knows? Maybe that’s what’s happening right now with Crystal Desert’s push. They’re going to pass by Dragonbrand in maybe two more point tallies, I think. Still, I’ll be interested to see what happens in the evening though and then in the “off hours”. Because I think some people are right. This is a pretty good match up and hope it stays within the competitive realm.

PS. Sorry. I ramble. I like talking about this stuff.

Very interesting stuff so far folks. Really stellar push by CD. TC’s normalizing a bit more too, in terms of potential points. Hopefully some bordland expansion will occur.

Honestly, that’s the most interesting fact of the match so far. I’ve generally seen it where borderlands get fairly well locked down by their owners (comparatively) but the distribution of holdings for servers is all over the place ATM.

Official Orb Hacking Treaty

in WvW

Posted by: Sharpclaw.7510

Sharpclaw.7510

Ignoring that the OP’s first sentence isn’t correct…

It’s hard to ensure that everyone would go along with something like this. Partially because, just like how you can’t police your own server and stop the exploiter, it’s also hard to ensure that everyone would go along with the idea of giving up an orb, no matter how gained.

Some people will, sure. And they major voices on a server can do their best to make sure that people go along with it but they can’t ensure that. And beyond that, some people won’t be as magnanimous anyway. Because that’s the priority that ANet has decided to put on orbs and their effect.

Bottom lines are this. Not everyone orb hacks. Not everyone on a server that has orb hacked condones it; most don’t. Yet, preventing the act itself is difficult and depending on the server, convincing people to make an exchange could prove to be equally so.

The real problem here is invisible enemies. Give their algorithms time to match servers properly.

I understand the need for such rendering but if the game wants to stress WvW as much as it wants to stress the eSport potential of sPvP (and whole knows, maybe, ANet doesn’t want that)…well, they’re going to need to make some tweaks to how some of this is handled.

But let’s leave the stuff best left unsaid, unsaid. You want to talk relatively strategies or anything, go ahead. But you can do that and keep personable.

Remember that this is a thread for everyone to talk about the match civilly. Talk of punishment or whatever, if there has to be any, should probably be left to individuals and PMs if you really want to take it to that. We want this thread to be a place where folks from all servers can talk about the match, not really to be a place to point fingers or anything like that. CD, understandably, wants to take whatever they can to pad against whatever response Dragonbrand musters during their off hours.

We can talk, if we want, about the relative merits of which strategy people enjoy. The notion of focusing on the opponent with less territory makes sense enough. Although, and I’m not just saying this, I do always think that attacking the individual closer to your heels always makes more sense because you rob them of points and take some for your own. It always seems the bigger gain. When you get down to it, it’s a question of effect versus effort, I guess. I always err on the side of effect.

What is the current score?

I missed taking a screenshot because I was in a rush bit but IIRC, DB is pushing towards 24k, CD is at 21, TC 18. I might be off a bit, I haven’t logged back in to check for a bit. It’s competitive enough, to be sure, with CD still in the position to move faster towards Dragonbrand, I believe. And, depending on a few things, for TC to keep in on things. Very least, this showings better than the last match up with da ’Brand.

Although I might suggest that your question is more than just idle curiosity if I’m not going to lie.

It does seem to be a very pronounced spike, in terms of what the Dragonbrand spike is at night time. I do know that TC kept up the fight in their own Borderlands for quite a long time, so regardless of result, I’m still pretty glad that folks made the effort that they did. Not to question Crystal Desert, but they had their borderlands heavily covered by Dragonbrand before I finally had to go to bed. Seems to be partially the case even now. It makes me curious, and not in any suggestive way (which I point out only because even small comments about matchups get turned into more than they are), why they weren’t so keen on their own zone. Although that’s changing a bit.

I still think this will be a fun match, although it’ll be very interesting to see how much either Tarnished Coast or Crystal Desert will be able to counter Dragonbrand’s apparent time differential. If I’m look at today, so far, the normal point trend tends to see CD pick up significantly when in full force and something of a back and forth, point wise, between DB and TC. (DB hits 190, pops up. TC hits a similar point, pops up a bi). It’s definitely early and the big counter for either CD or TC does seem to be the daytime push.

But enough analysis! Take time to talk about some of your favorite moments too! I’d like to hear those. I don’t want to start though. So, keep talking about the overall meta of the match but if you have a good kill or duel or intense siege, share the story!

So! I figured it’d be good to have a place to talk about the match. Ideally, a civil place where we can talk about things, maybe talk about exciting moments and all that. And to just discuss things generally. Leave the violent stuff for the field, eh?

For one, I’ll start by saying that I’m excited. I’m on TC and while I enjoyed our matchup against Sea of Sorrows and Gate of Madness this past week, there were time zone issues that came into play that were a hassle for pretty much everyone. I’m hoping this week, in terms of queuing, is more consistent between the three of us.

I’m ready to admit that I think this will be a much more difficult match. I’m excited to see Crystal Desert already and I would be lying to you if I didn’t say that, regardless of whatever course the long term takes for any server, I am eager to get another chance to bloody the nose of Dragonbrand.

Opening chaos seemed interesting enough, with some pull. And it looks to continue, even if there’s some general settlement (Crystal Desert seeming to have benefited from a strong opening even though, really, we’re talking about the first hour or so of a week long process). The next few days will be key for everyone, really and I hope that we all have a very fun, tense, and generally well played match.

TC has a fairly solid, or at the very least, established feel to it’s WvW forces. Organization slowly increasing, zone coverage generally understood. All that. And it has a group of people who fight just to fight and find joy in victory and the struggle.

Would we like to get back at, say, Dragonbrand? Sure. But everyone always wants to do better the next time their up against someone who hit you hard. That’s part of how competition goes. But at the end of the day, trite as this sounds, I just want good fights. Win or lose.

Extra coverage, for all servers, would likely help with this. I’d like to see those type of numbers spread generally across the board, from Kaineng to Denravi or whoever.

I wonder why people from TC feel the need to fill any thread about SoS recruiting NA with discussion about the match?

It’s topical.

For me, I genuinely liked fighting them, I know that. Seems like a great server. I think that’s a large part of it. The bouncing back and forth wasn’t too fun for either server, I’d wager. Or at least, it was tedious for all. I’d like to see both servers grow. It’d make for an exciting next time.

I enjoyed this match pretty in all ways. The thing that bothers me is that people are so quick to question that sincerity. As for what you’re telling me, it seems mostly like a communication issue. I can’t speak to the specifics obviously but perhaps keeping things general so that everyone sort of has a feel of the aims of the moment. But I mean, that’s nothing I really need to tell you.

Maybe it really was a morale thing. You did have the start of things so you all know it’s possible. Population’s one thing to be sure. But general good vibes, if they can be created might help. Even in the face of heavy opposition.

I dunno. I’m speaking about something I know only from the other side of the battlefield so I’m probably not a good judge, sorry.

I liked fighting GoM in this match. I think, and I’m not really in a position to say, that there was an early morale issue that prevented major pushbacks. Which is a shame because fighting against them still made for some really exciting moments.

I wish I knew more about your side and how things played out. Just out of mere curiosity. There was some obvious leadership, to be sure. But at some point, a switch was flipped. It might have been the night of the orb incident. Which, I don’t think that reasonable people blame on the whole server but I’m all but sure turned GoM into a target from the other two realms for a time.

If people only spam 1 skill to play/win, is that skill broken?

If a person is building around a certain skillset or means of damage? Not really. Obviously, the more versatility you have, the harder you are to counter because you’re less predictable but if you’re really good with something, be it a skill or weapon set and someone builds around it…well, I don’t really begrudge them.

EDIT: I should also make the note that you can build around a certain skill and still have enough knowledge of your class to not necessarily rely only on it. I have a S/P thief. They have PW. Do I use it? Sure. Do I use it exclusively? Not really, I actually can do fair enough damage in a fight with smart positioning and set up, with just my auto attack.

So even if a weapon set prioritizes a certain skill (say, by making it one of the only real burst skills)…you can use that without making it a crutch.

If it was my house, I might try to rebuild it. Try to fix the leak. If we’re speaking only in analogy now.

Votekick seems easily abused, aside for idle individuals/bots. I don’t know what the more elegant solution would be but I’d imagine there is one.

People would rather have a sure thing than a challenge.

This is really the long and short of it. The culture isn’t of server pride or identification but of a craving to win. Which, really, when you look at it, while it has boons and benefits, fighting an assured victory is boring. It lacks challenge and is generally vapid. But for some people the end is less important than the struggle. The bragging rights more important than the good fight.

The lack of subtlety is something of a shame. Some folks are unabashed about it because there’s no way to combat it. If spies are part of the metagame, and I see no reason why they shouldn’t be, there ought to be actually resources to manage them if discovered. There are some but they are limited.

I say embrace the concept and make it into an actual mechanic. With risks and rewards.

Apparently this part was skipped over.

Except for the general tone of diplomacy, admission of how much I enjoyed playing with you (and I really did), how much the notion of a more balanced SoS spread excites me for the next time servers match up, and generally being amiable. I think SoS is only going to get better. And I’m excited to get match with them again, win or lose.

So let’s not rewrite what’s actually written. It’s dishonest. I hope you enjoy the server. That’s genuine. I just hope that the stay isn’t as temporary as the previous two. It’d be a shame.
