I don’t think it matters honestly.

They have different teams working on different parts of the game.

They don’t really impact each other except perhaps from a support perspective, but I don’t know how ANet does support.

It’s likely they have devs that work on in critical areas whose time would be required by multiple teams. However this work also shouldn’t impact more than the team that the work is being done for unless there are a resource/time management issues. Which if this is the case then it’s still not an issue with having simultaneous releases it’s an issue with resources and time management.

One thing to be clear on is that this has nothing whatsoever to do with power creep as it has nothing to do with increasing the power level of the game. That would be around ascended gear and the power creep it brought to the game not about gear grinds—right!

You’ve got to buy all picks, right? If they offer a pick of exceptional ability you are going to have to pay for it, right? What exactly is the problem of paying for it through the gemstore. Sounds like a win/win to me. Unlike, of course, the real power creep of vertical progression which is definitely lose/lose no matter how you consider it.

In this game the progression competition is also around who can obtain different gear stat combos and gear skins the quickest.

Implementing counterplay changes for the elementalist and not other classes simultaneously is quite obvoiusly a significant nerf to what are already highly telegraphed skills when compared to other professions

I find some of the ideas and arguments on these threads kind of silly.

The idea that anet should refund/upgrade tools or some how trolled molten alliance picks is just plain silly… It would be like being upset at Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft for making a next generation console and demanding a refund or a upgrade and calling them trolls for releasing it. Any rational person is just going to throw their head back and laugh at you.

The conjecture and speculation that they may set us on a path where tools will include other more higher valued items is just that, speculation and conjecture to exaggerate a weak pay to win argument. If they had plans or showed intent to do this to high value items, then you might have a point but we know nothing in terms what might come out.

This is pay to win? what are you winning exactly? The future chance at some items? Sorry we are entirely passed this point of cash shop items much less gems providing economic benefit. To call this pay to win and none of the other infinite gathering tools, salvage items, cash to gold conversions, and convince items is hypocritical.

Most people don’t realize the effect it will have on whatever item they choose to stick on these tools. If they had not dropped the price floor (merchant value) off the any of the items in question then I would be worried. Whatever item they stick on these tools is going to be produced (farmed) into worthlessness. So in reality the tool is really a economic loser over a reasonable period of cost recovery because it floods the market with supply faster than any other individual item type being farmed with it.

I like this new tool because ideally people are throwing away gold and cash to make whatever tool item dirt cheap for the rest of us that are unwilling to pay for it.

People are just suffering from buyers remorse big time.

Fyi, companies incrementally work towards things they think they want to do.

If ANet thinks they want to do something in the future that is obviously pay to win to people now, they’ll do something like this pick to gauge the response and gather metrics to see if they’re going in a direction they’re users would support.

The user base’s negative response is good for those who are against paying for advantage concepts, because this is paying for an advantage.

There’s already a lot of possible ways to pay for an advantage they are just small enough that there’s not too much noise about them.

To bring it back to a more real life comparison to the incremental progress towards p2w, if you’re in the USA you feel like the constitution and the bill of rights are your unalienable rights. However, congress continuously has and does pass laws that they say trump those core rights, more recently one of the most egrigious being the patriot act and NSA policies and programs that have been derived from it.

It’s not a perfect comparison, but it gets the point across.

General fyi, y’all don’t necessarily want a dev response. The gemstore is barely a development domain for this item, mostly reused functionality… hardly any dev time at all for this. You’d want your message to get to someone else, likely marketing/sales as they probably have a team for the gemstore.

I have fun either going full zerker nuker staff. Gotta love those 3k-4k meteor hits and lava font ticks. Maximum range, safe sniping spot with allies on node but never ever you yourself on the node. Once targetted, run away like a scared puppy or prepare to die like a man.

Or condi-staff (yeah, lol) with written in stone. Playing on point staying mostly on earth for eruption bleeds. Tank-ish but dies in vain when focus fired.

I feel more productive with staff than S/D or D/D or D/F in sPVP. But that’s just me. This is mainly hotjoins. I don’t teamQ/soloQ and if I do, I roll a warrior. Duh?

Any maps you’ve found this strat doesn’t work well? Skyhammer for example seems like would make this strategy challenging to pull off.

Thief playing glass cannon is supposed to do this.

You admittedly said you deal 6k on crits with the elementalist, not sure what you’re specs are but if you were to spec the same way as the thief with lots of power, and +crit% damage then either Dragon’s Tooth or Fire Grab would be dealing nearly Identical damage as Backstab to foes with the difference being they’re AoE.

ANet just needs to refine the Living Story. They should work towards creating exclusive portions of Living Story releases with enough value to draw people in every two weeks, while opening up repeatable ways to experience the story portions of these temporary content releases shortly after the content goes away.

That’s the strategy, it just needs to be executed.

A couple points,

It’s unlikely the night the nightmare court are corrupted by dragon’s. The court has been around a while, and Faolin would probably have morphed into something less sylvari looking.

The theory that the dream is susceptible to dragon corruption seems unlikely.

Do players only want Berserker's Amulet?

Because of the game’s design combat only has two roles. DPS and Bunker. It only makes sense to spec in a way that makes you most efficient at that role. DPS is broken down into two sub-categories DD and Condi, so not everyone uses berserker but you are if you’re direct damage.

Being able to maximize reward and mitigate risk is the sign of a good player. Players that can maximize risk reward will be better if they are playing in Berserker gear as a DD. Because the best are able to get all the reward without any risk it only makes sense to run glass cannon.

Am I the only one who thinks the Nightmare court are minions to Mordremoth and like Amineo said the dragon at the start was one of his/her/its offshoots!

Based on Scarlet’s Journal she’s trying to walk her own path and sever any connection someone may have to control/influence her. Given this, why would the Nightmare court be servent’s of a forest dragon and following scarlet?

I would like to see sword #2 changed completely. It is just not fun to fight against. I’d remove the teleport, keep the immobilize, add a cripple, and transfer one condition to an enemy.

How would you compensate for the lack of survivability you’d create?

You’d be gaining survivability through the condition transfer. Imagine that every time you press 2, you pass a condition that you have back to the target. An example, a necro hits you with 8 stacks of bleeds. You press 2 and the stacks are put back on the necro. Not only are you protecting yourself, but you are adding a lot of damage back onto the target. Especially with a sword mainhand that hits multiple targets, you are doing big damage.

Of course you are more vulnerable to direct damage, but I think the condi protection makes up for it.

It’s not enough compensation to keep sword viable. Thief doesn’t die due to the slow passive damage of condition, they die from being squishy.

The gap created by shadow stepping helps them avoid damage.

Theorycrafting on Scarlet

I don’t think Scarlet’s nightmares, are part of “the nightmare”. I think it’s something in her subconcious. I still think the pale tree is a dragon champion that has gone Glint. Sylvari are obviously an intelligent race. The protected seeds indicate that they existed before, and obviously are valuable to someone. Yet, history makes no mention of them. In Omadd’s chamber, Scarlet was able to disconnect totally from the protection of “The Dream” and from “The Nightmare”. It was at this time the entity took advantage of Scarlet’s weakness and is now plotting to destroy the Pale Tree, just as Glint was destroyed.

Yeah, I know the claim that only a ritual known by the forgotten can convert a champion. However, Glint had existed for many years as a champion, where the pale seedling had yet to develop. Possibly due to the immaturity of the pale tree, Ventari’s and Ronan’s efforts were enough to change the tree.

The only way the Sylvari could be dragon minions is if Scarlet is actually working to aid a dragon. Based on her journal showing her desire to be remove herself from the influence of others it seems more likely she’s not working with dragons. If she’s not working with dragon’s and the Sylvari are dragon minions and the nightmare court know this then Scarlet wouldn’t have been able to form an alliance with the Nightmare court.

ANet is in a position to play it any way they want and even follow either side of player speculation, as long they explain some things away.

The feeling I get is that Scarlet isn’t fond of the Elder dragon’s, so if she was a minion of them and decided not to choose between nightmare or the dream but something else entirely then it’s unlikely that she would have been able to recruit the Nightmare Court.

Why not rethink how AP points are categorized. There’s HoM (Hall of Monuments), there’s LS(Living Story), theres Daily/Monthly, and there’s Core (Always there achievements).

I’d like to see a breakdown of these achievement point types and have sub-categories of the AP leaderboard.

Only if their Living World won’t coincide with ours, timeline-wise. Which wouldn’t seem likely, as they would then have the plot and outcome to each one, as ours would be a year or two ahead.

They may have completely different arcs, though. Time will tell, I suppose. =)

My current guess ANet will want all 3 regions to be following the same timeline and want China to experience what we’ve already experienced. With China that won’t be possible their first year. My thought is that ANet would be able to condense/merge some releases for them, the break they were just on puts China less far behind too.

I could be wrong, but I’m realy curious. Just waiting for an ANet rep to confirm

Most important advice when playing a thief is to play hit and run. Learn to use your mobility skills and stealth when you know you’re at a disadvantage. It’s usually better to live to fight another battle by running than giving up 5 extra points and waiting for respawn.

No class should be able to simultaneously attack while evading (invulnerable) incoming damage.

That’s silly, every class is able to do this.

There are obvious issues with the mega boss encounters.

1. Overflows make it hard to play with a coordinated group. You have to wait around to have fun if you want to play with coordinated groups due to server hardcaps on players allowed.
2. Hardcaps suck if you disconnect, bcs you have to wait another hour to get back in due to people constantly attempting to join hardcapped servers.
3. No viable in game way to coordinate while still performing objectives, meaning the outermost overflow servers are guaranteed to fail since they are usually mostly individuals or small parties. Also coordinated people taxi into the main server and inner Overflows taking experienced play away from outer overflows.

I already know what I would do if Pistol Whip was a two part skill. I’m making an assumption that if you queue the flurry back to back with the pistol whip the skill would still function as is in regard to timeing, I’m also assuming the stun duration wouldn’t change.

Scenario 1 – Two part skill without requiring on hit pistol whip to trigger flurry

  • Pre-fight I’d usually burn the stun to have the flurry on hand, since sword 2 immobilizes for longer than the stun stays active it makes more since to immobilize and flurry
  • I’d Pistol whip then auto attack chain, since the auto attack chain has more dps and is mobile. I’d save the flurry for defensive situations. This would lead to me utilizing Black Powder and Headshot more frequently, since I have the initiative to do it.

Scenario 2 – Two part skill requiring on hit pistol whip to trigger flurry

  • I’d Pistol whip then auto attack chain, since the auto attack chain has more dps and is mobile. I’d save the flurry for defensive situations. This would lead to me utilizing Black Powder and Headshot more frequently, since I have the initiative to do it.

Those are the primary buffs that would come out of splitting the skill (1 is obviously the same between both scenarios). The question is, does Pistol Whip itself need a nerf to compensate? (Not talking about changing sword or Pistol skills, those impact other builds, just talking about Pistol Whip).

I could see them adding a 1 initiative cost and have a 3|3 split, though as a thief I hope that doesn’t happen, because that would take away from my mindless mid capture point PW spam to hold point and apply pressure during team fights, but that’s really all it would take away for me honestly.

I really hope they make the change, but make it without coming back and nerfing things other than pistol whip or nerfing pistol whip beyong the 3|3 initiative split, as a result of the two additional benefits available.

maybe PvE to sPvP but no way sPvP to PvE

some of gears in spvp are way too easy to earn while the same appearance are very hard to get in real world.

I wouldn’t consider 60,000 Glory+60 gold through PvP “easy”

I got Arah set gears in spvp just from random chest. If u wanna get in pve u have to grind pve for a while

rng favors you

most people will have to grind for 15,000 glory and 8 gold

in hotjoin it’d average to be 150 glory per 7 minutes optimally

optimally that’s 700 minutes or 11+ hours

realistically your probably going to be closer to getting 150 glory per 12 minutes

that’s 1200 minutes or 20 hours

whether it’s 11 hours or 20 hours, if you do arah runs for that long you probably have a completed set and then whatever extra profit from loot after that

the other nice thing about dungeon runs is you can target individual pieces whereas in pvp you have to go all in on the whole set

the point of all this is that it’s not unfair to get an armor in one game type and have it in the other

Pistol whip has some pretty simple counters.

Retaliation is one of the riskier ones. Mesmers, Guardians, and Warriors can deal back a lot of damage back with retal, especially warriors since they can use damage immunity.

Evading the stun is probably the easiest counter.

There’s little reason to stun break because you can walk straight through the thief to cut the damage down by half to avoid a lot of the flurry. Or you can dodge roll out of it after the stun. Or while winding up the pistol whip you can just walk through the thief and be behind him so he misses.

If a thief is winding up a pistol whip for seemingly no reason, it’s probably because he’s going to shadow step at you during the wind up so you think he’ll miss. This tactic is also fun to do on Skyhammer with a Hammer Gaurdian + Judges intervention to easily knock people off the map. Also doable with Lightning Hammer + Lightning Flash on the ele.

As a mesmer you can flurry each other evading each other, that’s amusing to be a part of.

If you’re wasting your cooldowns on a PW thief, learn to time your skills to hit after the flurry ends.

There’s all kinds of ways to counter pistol whip, and the easiest ones to pull off just involve positioning + dodging, so they’re available to all classes. The thief can do nothing but waste time flurrying at nothing or cancel the flurry wasting valuable iniative when you use counter play on pistol whip.

I think that his speculation about thieves with sigils of air and fire together instantly killing “viable” builds seems unrealistic and fear-mongering.

Idk, with high power mug+fire can hit for 3k+ on squishies. Backstab can be landed for about 9k already when traiting for damage modifiers. When I’m in the mood for backstab squishy thieves, guardians, and ele’s are very nearly instantly downed.

Add in air and you’re getting pretty close to pulling off 14k+ instantly from stealth. So much of the thief’s viability comes from it’s weapon and utility skills with some extra benefit from traits that it’s not really a stretch to say that there will be insta-down spikes. Don’t expect to see a warrior or necro drop that fast. However, squishy builds on guardian, ele, thief could potentially drop 100% to 0%.

I have seen what he is talking about and he killed two warriors in the process.
It is not uncommon to see a thief that can staff invisible as long has he wants in WvW and be able to kill anyone in the group he picks out. For example, today I had my Warrior, Toughness= 2100 Amor=3100+ Health=22000+ struck the thief with my hammer he stood there dazed for two or three seconds with my hammer smashing in his face and he walks away and kills me and the guy that was with me…

Can someone say how that happened?

You have too much defense and not enough offense in your build it sounds like. Same may be true for the Guardian. Damage rules this game because there is no holy trinity. Without video to tell you two what you did wrong and the thief did right I can’t really speculate further.

It’s weird people feel S/P is bad in PvP, but that aside ANet said they were thinking about making the skill a two part skill like Flanking Strike and Larcenous Strike. That’s what I took away from the info at least. A change like that would only be a nerf if you couldn’t queue up the evading flurry if you didn’t connect with the pistol whip.

Something people may have looked over is that critical damage builds usually spec into traits to get an extra 30% crit damage, it’s unclear whether ANet was taking that into account when they said berserker builds would have a 10% over dps nerf. If they did then it will a 10% nerf like they said, if they didn’t then the overall dps impact will be a bit less than 10%. The calculations will be slightly different when taking into account ferocity from runes and traits.

@OP: ANET in general is making EVERY class simpler to play. They have been buff a lot of the no skill passives recently and nerfed the skillful play. Examples:

Passives
Heal signet
AOE damage

Nerfs:
Vigor

They need to make the game easier to understand and harder to execute in order to get bigger in e-sports. Futball (Soccer) is the worlds most popular sport in large part because it follows the principals of being easy to understand and hard to execute.

Weaknesses – sustain, stun breakers, condition removal

The strengths can make up for the weaknesses, but sustain is so weak you’ll usually have to play hit and run.

It’s fairly obvious people are overwhelmed by PvP because of how complex combat is and the steep learning curve involved. It’s not amulets that are overwhelming players.

Split Lyssa Runes

There’s other threads on this discussion. You’ll find people will bring up the same arguments now as they did then.

I don’t use lyssa. I prefer Ogre or Eagle on a thief, which I mostly play now. On a warrior lyssa is strong with Signet of Fury (which I think is where most of the Lyssa hate comes from). I haven’t found the rune set to stand out as the best moreso than than other runes on the main professions I play in PvP which are Guardian, Mesmer, Ele, or Thief.
