At least they toned it down…I remember in the beta, if you didn’t have a crafting discipline learned yet, every single time you’d walk remotely near anyone that had anything to do with crafting “HEY! HEY YOU!” oh dear god…you don’t realize how frequently you walk by those guys until they pull a Navi on you.

That Charr you’re talking about is a spy sent to infiltrate the Durmond Priory by the Order of Whispers. And there are six dragons. Five that we know about, four that have had some noticeable impact on the world. Since you didn’t actually kill Zhaitan at the battle of Fort Trinity, Riel couldn’t have been talking about the EDs. Possible she was talking about his champions or land to be reclaimed or something.

Yes those cities are generally hard to take…but they fall nonetheless such as Byzantium(now Istanbul) with the largest thickest walls in existence being taken over by the Turkish army

True enough – but Constantinople didn’t fall until about a century after the rest of the empire, during which it was basically in much the same situation as Ebonhawke except without a strong ally like Kryta to back it up. The defenders in the siege in which it fell were outnumbered more than ten to one, and still held for two months of active assaults. They can fall – anything can if the attackers can throw enough force at it – but they’re a lot harder to take than pretty much anything else.

Just a thought…doesn’t the defensibility of a tiered city kind of drop off the map when you…oh, I don’t know…get teleported into the exact center right next to high command by some machine…let’s call it an Asura gate? And don’t they fare less than well against aerial attacks?

Oh well, humans have already made clear their defensive strategy in times of war; “blow ourselves up.” Let’s see…there was Orr, Charr attacked so they read a scroll and blew themselves up…Then there was Ascalon, Charr attacked so they broke a sword and blew themselves up…Now there’s Kryta…Oh I wonder how this ends.

-snip- This is why the Inquest are tolerated where the other major races ostracize their “bad factions.” -snip-

The Sons of Svanir are tolerated by the norn as well. Their culture reveres actions, not beliefs and while the norn may disapprove of the Sons’ decision to forsake the spirits of the wild, they’re not about to ostracize them without having committed some wrong.

And yes, after reading this thread, I do wonder how Asura society does not just fall apart. That “me me me” mentality doesn’t seem like it would work too well in a civilization.

Countering...

Simplicity.7208

Hmmm, that’s one I never considered; a second weapon set. I’ve always done D/P & SB for mobility, but mobility is never an issue, so it probably would be wise to swap it out for something. I initially only used D/P to get used to it, but now that I’m quite adept at using it, I should definitely get a second weapon. Also, with the black powder thing “keep it between him & you”…That means you can’t hit him either, because dagger range/sword range is not great enough to reach him, in which case he has the advantage since warriors can just stall out the black powder’s duration all the while gaining some 800 hp/second from regeneration. I still don’t see how black powder is a good idea unless you use it directly on top of the warrior, but I can never get that close without getting chain stunned.

Countering...

Simplicity.7208

Warriors, spirit rangers, and phantasm mesmers as a thief…How to do it?

Warriors have that nice little 3 second stun on a 7 second cooldown on top of their other stuns and blocks. They spam stuns so much my stunbreakers can’t keep up and then as soon as I’m helpless, they just hit me with a hundred blades and I die. Don’t say black powder because good warriors know that the range on their attacks is slightly more than the radius of black powder so they can avoid the blind entirely all while continuing to apply their constant stuns.

Spirit rangers resummon their minions before you can get any damage in on the ranger, and if you don’t focus the minions, they just eat all your backstabs and you can’t do any damage to the ranger. It’s just a stall match until you slip up because with those minions up, it’s not possible to kill the ranger, so you will lose all duels with a spirit ranger (who knows his stuff).

And finally phantasm mesmers, those phantasms don’t die to a backstab, but they can each deal around 30%~50% of my health with each attack. If they’ve got three phantasms and I stealth, then all the phantasm cooldowns go off while I’m stealthed and as soon as I unstealth, I get hit with all three phantasm attacks at once. The combined damage of those attacks instantly kills me from full health. Of course I can dodge, but dodges only go so far and if I also have to worry about the mesmer using his blurred frenzy or shatters, then dodging is no help at all since I can evade one attack to die to another.

Currently running 0/30/30/10/0 D/P. I feel like I should switch to d/d for the ranger and the mesmer, but I still can’t find a counter for those permanent stun locking warriors. I literally had a fight where I got stunned, shadow stepped, got stunned again, shadow stepped back, got stunned again, rolled for initive, got stunned again, then he just kept me stunned for the next 10 seconds while he killed me with mace auto attack. Advice?

Support - Thieves vs Mesmer

in Thief

Simplicity.7208

One big advantage you’re all leaving out for standard thief builds is misdirection. In WvW you can stealth and flank, hit the squishies on the back line really quite hard and while the enemy is scrambling to figure out where you’re coming from, your zerg has time to counter and push back the front lines. I would call this indirect support, but creating chaos amongst the ranks of your enemies is a form of support nonetheless.

@Ehecatl – Diehard Charr fan maybe? Believing the Charr have the ability to withstand an assault better than the other races is one thing. Completely disregarding Asuran magitech is something else entirely. If every Charr thought like that, then the Charr would be a pathetically easy race to wipe off the planet. Ever hear of something called “underestimating a foe?” You should look up the American war of Independence. See how that worked out for Great Britain.

Fortunately, not every Charr does underestimate their opponents and as such we have things in place like the explosives on the bridge. I’m not about to argue “Oh yeah, the Asura would or would not win X at Y” because that’s pointless, I was just curious as to why they’ve never tried it yet. Of all the races, I feel like the Asura would have the best chance at winning a war against the others.

Hoelbrak? The norn were always described as nomads, I wouldn’t put it past them to either 1) fight and die or 2) abandon the city without much concern. I agree with what Alleluia said about the grove & divinity’s reach. But wouldn’t it be simple for an Asura to attune the Asura gates to skip the middle-man of Lion’s Arch? Furthermore, if they can recalibrate their Asura gates at will, they could simply begin an attack then recalibrate asura gates to drop anyone who uses them in the middle of a volcano. Nothing says “Oh shi—” like spawning 500 meters in the air above a pit of lava. Where’s the reinforcements? “Well, funny story about that…”

I do agree that the black citadel & lion’s arch wouldn’t fall so quickly to the blitzkrieg, but I feel like they still could be taken. Although “they are not very numerous” is a great argument for why they wouldn’t succeed.

The Dragons might not be evil.

in Lore

Posted by: Simplicity.7208

Simplicity.7208

Everybody says “they do things I think are evil” or “they don’t think about the things they do.” I think about them like animals. They sleep. They wake up. They hunger, so they eat. Unfortunately for us, they’re higher on the food chain and no matter how much they eat, they can never sate their hunger. For the elder dragons it’s as simple as eat or starve. Self preservation instinct says eat and so they do.

We’ve already been told this is not the first time the elder dragons have risen. What if the first time they rose they were content to just eat and go back to sleep? The eradication of all life would just be a side effect. However, we started fighting back trying to protect the magic we needed to sustain life. So they defended themselves. Every time they rose, they would be fought by beings seeking to protect magic; to prevent the elder dragons from eating. To kill the elder dragons. The dragons (as sentient beings) began learning how best to deal with that. How to evolve to be better predators. This involves things like genocide, corruption, preemptive strikes against perceived threats, and psychological warfare through symbolic victories like at the Honor of the Waves.

This isn’t their first time being awake. They’ve done this before. They know what they’re doing, but it’s a case of kill or be killed. As a rational being, they choose kill.

EDIT: Also wanted to mention this:
“You can’t compare this with humans versus insects, because insects live short lives to begin with.”
It’s a perfectly acceptable comparison. Compared to the elder dragons, humans live short lives. Elder dragons could have lived for millions of years and we know they’ve at least lived for 10,000 years. In the scale of that, how is 70 years not comparable to the life of an insect?

Why Don't the Asura Rule the World?

in Lore

Posted by: Simplicity.7208

Simplicity.7208

The only answer I can come up with is “They don’t want to.”

My logic is that they control the Asura gates & waypoints. They dictate how and when they are used. Not only that, but they have Asura gates in every race’s capitol. It’s a very simple matter to march your army into every racial capitol in the middle of the night, disable all waypoints & Asura gates, then follow it up with a slaughter. Blitzkrieg at it’s best. And the defending city’s reinforcements would be unable to reach their city before it burns to the ground because for the most part, they are scattered across the planet. Added bonus: the Asura say “you may only use our gates for peaceful purposes” to ensure that this strategy is not employed against them.

Furthermore, the Asura seem to have an army of golems that only they understand how to operate and militarized technology surpassing every other race currently on the planet: who are the ones who made the anti-dragon mega laser? who are the ones pioneering research into draconic energies? who are the ones with a nigh impenetrable floating city, it’s only means of entry being an Asura gate that the Asurans can easily lock down? Yeah…

On top of that, they have more money than every other race combined. When you pay your waypoint fee, who do you think gets that money? The Asurans. When you use an Asura gate, the city pays for you to use it. They’re richer, they’re smarter, they’re stronger, and they already have an easy means of attacking.

In a real world situation, the Asurans would abuse the hell out of their militaristic advantage to acquire copious amounts of goods giving them an even greater advantage over the other races. So why don’t they?

It’s possible to do 1vX fights. In a smaller server that counts as a zerg. I don’t mean 1v100 or anything. Maybe 1v10. Any other class pretty much gets steamrolled instantly. A thief can play with his stealth to spread his opponents thin and pick off the targets one by one starting with the squishiest. That’s what I meant. My bad!

Regardless of how good a thief is or is not, I will never give up my ability to flee from any situation when it goes south. Any. Situation. Never underestimate how powerful first strike advantage is, and thieves rely on that like no other due to stealth. Start losing a fight? Stealth out, wait for a reset, hop back in, rinse and repeat until your opponent makes a mistake. Be essentially immortal.

Besides, no other class can 1vZerg as easily as a thief can.

Simplicity.7208

Something is wrong with the range on thieves. Standing from exactly the same place, attacking a stationary monster, my pistol could not reach it, but my shortbow could (autoattacks). Are we sure they’re both 900?

It was in the Jade Maw near the head of the creature, my pistol could not reach the first veteran tentacle even from the edge of the platform, but my shortbow was having no problems from the rear of the platform. Something is amiss. Maybe range increases for shortbow if the enemy is lower than you?

Either way, your ability (as a thief) to pop in and out of combat should mitigate the loss of that 300 range unless we’re talking zerg v zerg, in which case a thief was probably a bad choice to begin with.

D/D ele: Keep pressure on them. If you’re not constantly hitting them, you’ll never get them low enough to kill. Headshot their water attune #2, use basilisk venom not to open, but instead when they are weak with no utilities left (looking at you mist form), to ensure they can’t yoyo their health back up with water attunement. Poison from your auto attack chain helps, not for damage, but for really raining on their ability to self heal. Headshot ether renewal if they let you. And generally fight inside your black powder for a bit before heartseekering through it for stealth. Bunkers don’t instantly die to zerker thieves but they can be broken. It requires a lot of finesse though and usually your time is better spent elsewhere.

Sheet music is helpful yes. It’s a very simple task to make flute music from sheet music. Also, if you’re having so much trouble with the note cancellation just double tap the note you wish to play. If you do it quick enough it actually allows for things like staccato, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, etc instead of just legato quarter, half, or whole notes. I like the change albeit difficult to get used to.

For transcribing music you can just look up the key it’s in, if it’s a major key, simply find the first note of that major key’s scale and set that to be your 1/8. From there just figure out the other #s from the 1/8 you’ve previously established (low octave 8 = high octave 1)

Tried soloing on my mesmer. Aggroed the mobs from behind the mortars and died to a Veteran Striker.

See the pattern? And each time I was somehow within their aggro range despite killing the plunderers from there.

They fixed it. Mobs no longer have leashes (well, they do…the leash just ends about where the armor repair NPC is, and if you drag a mob all the way out there, he camps between you & the mortars so there is absolutely no going back without getting his attention). Now it really is just all luck. You better hope they don’t throw some right side plunderers at you cause even one = fail. You better hope swashbucklers don’t spawn near the mortars, because you cannot shake them. This definitely is not worth my time.

43223 D5 U43223 12 D5 5 U234 2 D7 U12 D55 U3

(Note: After this repeats it changes keys: Flutes can’t change keys and thus it wouldn’t sound right so this is all that can be done)

@The person requesting the star spangled banner: It has an accidental in it where the kitten happens, so no matter how you play it, it won’t sound right because the flute can’t do accidentals.

@Everyone requesting music. If you can find a MIDI of the song, you can turn it into sheet music using a variety of programs widely available on the internet. Looking at the sheet music, if you see ANY accidentals, it is impossible to play on the flute. If the range (difference between lowest & highest note) is more than 2 octaves, it is also impossible to play on the flute. Of course if you can’t find a MIDI of the song, you could just look up sheet music for the song. That might be the easier route.

Suffice to say, most songs don’t work because they usually have key changes or accidentals. Furthermore, the flute cannot play rapid succession notes, so any song that is very fast pace or has very fast parts won’t sound right played on the flute. That will be all.

@synk I’m not a lesbian. That snippet makes it sound like I am, I’m not, lol. Hence the guild teasing me about it for being a Sylvari and asking them this question first. Tbh, they don’t care much about the lore.

You did bring up an interesting point though; how do the other races view homosexuality? We know Sylvari are like “whatever.” Do we have any information on what the other races think? Is humanity in game just as prejudiced as humanity in real life?

Guys – as I have said previously, please submit a technical support ticket with this information if you’re still experiencing issues. When we suggest players contact their ISP it is because we have found a considerable amount of packet loss that only the ISP can do anything about. We’re not simply sending away every player that submits a ticket.

Again, if you’re still experiencing lag or connectivity issues please submit a ticket so that we can better assist you one on one. It can be very difficult to obtain much needed information through the forums especially when players don’t provide all requested info or are afraid to share it due to security concerns.

Did ArenaNet just say “We’re not fixing it. Go bug your ISP”? I’ve got TimeWarner Cable & the neat little lag you guys are talking about. So glad I’m already on the list.

I have a tendency to miss a lot of the random NPC dialogue despite trying my very best to hear as much of it as I can, and my personal story didn’t have anything to do with sylvari couples, so I literally had never met a straight sylvari. Glad to know they exist. Thanks for the replies.
