Running nothing but bears and longbow (and maybe even shortbow) in dungeons. Not only are you doing kittenty damage, you’re also not supporting your teammates nor receiving support from them.
In my opinion a shortbow ranger with spotter & frost spirit being near the team is perfectly fine. Just because it has a range of 900 it doesn’t mean you cannot use it near point blank, to give & receive buffs. (if the boss doesn’t require wall-pushed full meleeing that is) Sometimes being in a range of 200 rather than in melee makes all the difference when it comes to dying from random cleaves.
The bear is obviously a problem, but in high level fractals the bear can have some uses. (melee can hide behind it on Old Tom for example) I think currently the best pet a ranger can take is the jungle stalker, it does great dmg (no surprise from a cat) & the extreme might buff is very useful even with the short duration.
What most bearbow rangers don’t understand, that the current meta in explorables is full-meleeing all bosses pushed into corners, or to walls. In that environment you only have 2 options to do decent dmg: point blank flanking shortbow with max bleed stacks at all times(full zerk build still), or short sword. Flanking is something that’s very random, so it comes down to the Sword very quickly. The greatsword dmg is soo ridiculously low that there is no excuse in using it in a decent organized group.
As someone pointed out in a recent sword topic, the sword ranger is one the hardest things to play in pve. You need to predict your dodges, kill your 1 button on your keyboard, dance around a bit with your qe keys, face the fact that if you are not careful you will fall off platforms in almost any situation, the best yet leaps are only working reliably on a level open surface. What else, oh yes the “backflip” dodge on sword 2 doesn’t work when your back is against the wall.
Would be nice, if we could dodge mid-leap. (ranger sword#1)
Now that I think about it catching GS up in terms of dmg would be even better. (15% boost on maul won’t cut it) The current dungeon meta is very melee-centric…

Can you pls calculate the Shortbow dmg with 8 stacks of bleed maintained with power gear? (that’s about normal for a flanking shortbow)
Using the same gear and numbers:
100% Flanking – 1,681.128 DPS
75% Flanking – 1,587.944 DPS
50% Flanking – 1,494.760 DPS
25% Flanking – 1,401.576 DPS (number I previously posted)
Thanks, useful to know!

I’ve been hunting a fractal warhorn for god knows how long. All I seem to get from FotM sre skins that I can’t use on my ranger.
I feel your pain, the things I really wanted never dropped for me either :I
The Aetherized warhorn is boss, expensive as kitten tho.
That one is quite good, but it’s not a good match either. (I would buy it otherwise)
Is there seriously no warhorn skin that uses gift of light or 250 ectos? (and looks the part)
Maybe Ascalon Warhorn at night?
Yeah I like that one, unfortunately I want one that looks good in daylight too
I’m looking for a nice warhorn to go with my Whisperblade. Pretty much cost no object, anything’s in play that’s not the Howler. The best one I’ve found thus far is the one from Arah tokens, but it’s very far from a good match. Is there any super expensive (or cheap) non gemstore warhorn skin in the game that is blue-ish, or purple & goes nicely with a Whisperblade? Thanks in advance for any help!
Moto’s state-of-the-art Solid Holography is not approved for submersion in certain liquids.
Does that mean we won’t have SAB underwater weapons either, like ever?
My guild leader got a zerker stat ascended box, I don’t know anyone else in our massive guild (400~ppl) that gotten anything noteworthy from multiple kills. (Desolation Eu)
I mainly agree with the Op, I hope Anet is able to learn from this. (I’m fairly naive, hope dies last

As soon as I get the last 2 achies I’ll stop trying too. It’s not fun to wait an hour for a boss, when the arrival of said boss cannot be predicted, no wonder half of the players are afk when the actual fighting starts & we end up failing even with strong TS organizing led by a guy with a great Scottish accent.
Also it would be a good idea to modify the min system requirements of the game, even with minimum settings an average laptop cannot cope with this.
If I were the lead designer for this content, it would have been in an open world instance similar to some of the personal story instances like claw island, maybe it would be called a “guild boss of the week” & it would have a build time and everything, designed to scale down to 20 ppl if needed. :-)
An other idea would be: Exclude ppl from scaling that are afk for more than 2-3 minutes, they don’t need to get kicked off or anything, just don’t upscale the boss because of them.
It’s only good for dungeons like CoF, or TA up.
In my opinion it’s very limited, ppl just keep auto-joining without reading the actual description & end up kicked either early on in the instance, or right after joining. There is no filtering what so ever. Why is it, that whenever I specify I want an experienced lvl80 guardian for AC path 2, I get lvl37 rangers instead? It’s not fun for me to kick them & re-lfg after & it is certainly not fun for the ranger (unable to read, or understand English, or not willing to anyhow) to get kicked upon joining.
It would be nice if we could disable auto join for our groups, perhaps have a system similar to gw1, where you got join requests & so we could whisper them and sort things out properly.
I never thought about that, I do all my SAB solo.
I guess it wouldn’t be a bad idea to make those spots safe from owls.
Edit:
At least the owls don’t kill you >.>
Actually they do. At times thanks to the owls I kind of entered combat & missed jumps because of the lowered speed, or at least that’s what i thnk happened.
As far as I know your speed does not change in SAB. There is no in or out of combat state like there is in the real world.
You can go back and check the old original patch notes if you want, but I remember Josh discussing this the first time around.
I’m certain being hit by an owl makes your movement speed drop for about a second. Killed me a dozen times.
the system isn’t perfect because we can’t call a script to the exact moment the slow down occurs, so there can be split-second overlaps where you still have our SAB speed boost but you’re also exiting the combat slow down
I would assume this not only causes a short speed boost upon leaving combat, but also a short slowdown upon entering combat.

Good good, at least I’m not insane yet. (might be soon, w2z3 is what we are doign right now..)

Maybe it’s just placebo, simply just got distracted n missed the jump.
You can smack the owl away with your high five
I’ll try that, thank you!
It’s easy to trick them Sina, simply sidestep left or right as soon as the jump, standing the furthest away possible from them.
If they land next to you (check a pic above), I found no way to avoid the steal.

I tried the quick strafing, it’s not helping. Right now I’m waiting at the checkpoint with the balloon again ^__v (look at pic)
175 baubbles lost so far & counting.
Me & my friends are doing SAB tribulation mode as a group, its a lot of fun, we can figure out things together learn from each others mistakes etc. it works great.
Here is a problem tho, what usually happens is this: One or more of us makes it to a cloud and waits for those behind us & ITS NOT FUN to lose 100 baubbles to owls while we are waiting for ppl, it makes it less multiplayer firendly. What was the design decision behind this?
Overall we still enjoy the tribulation mode a lot …
Were this a single player game I would be looking for the infinite baubbles cheat for sure.
Older games had something like this so it’s fair to have it in this game. It doesn’t take that long to farm that many.
Are you suggesting that forcing me to farm roughly 1000 baubbles with repeating w1-1 is a good design move? Sure you could argue that I could just run the whole thing from the beginning to the king toad & get a whooping 70 buabbles in 20 mins, but that still this is not what this game should be about. In older games you had to grind at times yes, but not by repeating levels..
(edited by Sina.9208)
I just don’t understand this, initially I really liked SAB, I thought it was fun, but the current achievement grind really ruins it for me.
You can farm them in ten minutes in W1-1
just look for some chests / secret rooms / good digging places.
Are you sure? I’m in a similar situation as the topic starter, I’m going for w1 achievements atm and I need to grind 400~ more bubbles to get the whip & slingshot for the achie. The chest I opened had only a single baubble in it & the digging spots on dulfy are not working anymore…
So far the only way I found is to speed clear w1z1 repeatedly, very frustrating if you ask me..
Race: Human
Class: Heavy Armor (Orrian Armor)
Item: Zodiac Shield
Annoying albeit very small clipping at the middle of the shield.
Did you do the story instance first?
As far as invasion canceler, the achievement says DIFFERENT maps.
On different maps.
Not getting achievement credit for Vorrp Invasion Closer & Invasion canceler etc..
I’ve been present at the end of invasions about 8 times, 3 times out of those I didn’t get any achie credit for either of the achievements listed in the title. I personally dislike this whole 45 mins of zerging thing & now this is just pure frustration.
Out of the 3 times I didn’t get the achie credit we killed Scarlet 2 times even.. (the funny thing is, I did get bags & mats for the weird looking shoulder skin at the end)
What about some of the Shiro’ken. For example: http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/e/e9/Shiro'ken_Mesmer.jpg
The new magi-mechanical guards look very similar to what Shiro had at his disposal in Factions, so it could be true
This whole new festival would be a lot more interesting, if 2 weeks from now we would learn about Jennah being evil, her forces trying to conquer Lions Arch or something similar. Not quite Elder Dragons but would be hell of a lot more interesting than the precious living story installments! Oh wait she could be a dragon servant, or perhaps being possessed by a dragon. (pls Anet give us something that feels more epic than playing Sims)
Do I assume correctly, that I need to be at the Lion statue when the fireworks is concluded? How often can we watch it?
About glass cannons: If you are not doing high level fractals (40+) you can clear any content with 5 glass cannons with ease, period. All this talk about lack of support being bad & selfish is kind ridiculous to me. And if you are doing fractals 40+ with an organized group you are going to have at least 1 (or 2 when a sensible player relogs on his/her guardian alt to help out the group) guardian(s) so mesmer reflect & other utilities aren’t all that useful, or important. At the end of the day it all boils down to dps. While I am personally unsure whether Nemesis’s build is the best for this, but it’s quite good, quite close to what I think is optimal.
Well, as it turns out, you’re completely wrong. Guardians provide some utility, but mesmers provide more. You don’t bring mesmers in groups for the damage, you bring them for the utility that only they can provide, and that has been mentioned over and over in this thread that you obviously didn’t read. Nemesis’ build has 0 utility, and will squish if a level 40 fractal mob so much as sneezes in his general direction…not helpful from a dps standpoint.
I’m obviously not a Mesmer expert, anyhow this is interesting. Would you mind listing the utilities only Mesmers can provide? (pls don’t say portal & mass invisibility)

This is the patch what it should have been 5 month ago. Overall there are quite a few useful changes. Let’s hope they fix the longbow dmg next :-)
Disappointed about the elite spirit tho, that’s one that really could have used a little HP buff…
(edited by Sina.9208)
I think they should have used the same methodology as with the wintersday skins too. Maybe more expensive tickets, like 2000gems/ticket would have been a lot more fair & less frustrating.
Didn’t you all learn your lesson during the Halloween update? and to add fuel to this fire, i got my ticket on my first chest…its RNG accept it and move on. Having one of these fused weapons actually makes it feel prestigious because of its rarity legendary’s are far too common now. ;D
This is a lot worse than @ halloween, now the tickets are account bound … 25-30 Keys no ticket, thinking of deleting the game too.
I’ve been using scorps every now and then & I know they licked my wounds before, maybe 2 times since release
, but it sure is a rare occurrence. With that said, we could list pretty much all pets, because whenever I desperately need Lick wounds to work, it almost never does.
I suspect it’s like Final Rest and there’s some glitch making it unavailable.
yups probably dwayna event either the odds is 0.00000001% or the devs just forgot to add it to the loot table just like Final rest.
0 final rest for 5 months, 10+ final rest in a few hours after patch
just wait for the dwayna bows to appear in tp but don’t buy it,immediately start farming dwayna event after that, once u get it,sell it fast to highest bidder, then post in forums where you got it with screenshot. Wait a few days and buy back the bow which would be cheaper now.
I wonder what would happen if I filed a bug report saying that the dwayna chest is bugged, because it’s suppose to drop this item, but it doesn’t :-)
LB is a terrible weapon. it’s so sad that devs dont actually realize this, and newbs keep saying positive things about it on the forums. LB rangers in WvW are an embarrassment. thing is people dont realize how amazing a high RoF weapon like the power/crit SB is with sigil of fire. range is about the same, and utility so much greater.
anyway, getting off topic here. let me just add that the LB does not synergize well with the pet, mostly because both the pet and the LB fail at longer ranges. LB also fails at 900 or closer, where pets are most effective. issue is, at longer rangers both the pet and the arrows can be juked effortlessly. and landing your barrage cripple + pet combo requires a ridiculous amount of micromanagement for a subpar effect, while often making u dead while u channel. SB on the other hand gives you a spammable cripple that is effective at any range.
Tell me how long you have used the longbow and how you’re using the longbow before you make a claim like that.
I play a power/crit ranger, using LB & SB swapping between the two as I see it fit, but the sad reality is that LB does about the same dmg in max range, as a non flanking shortbow point blank, maybe 10% more, but that’s it. LB suppose to be a pve ranger’s main weapon and there is no real gain in using it in dungeons, it has some advantages, like barrage, but that’s pretty much it.
I’d like to add, that sometimes (very often) I press the f3 button & the pet doesn’t move for 2-3 seconds, which is more than enough time for it to get obliterated in a red circle. Anyhow I really like where this is going, if RH manages to push the f4-f5 pet dodge button through, then the only major ranger problem (in dungeons at least) that remains will be the low LB dmg at max range..
I realize that fixing our pet & utility skills difficult, but it’s sad that even if u are playing a power crit spec ranger LB does roughly the same dmg in max range as the SB point blank. This could be fixed with a simple number tweak, for example increase the dmg over 1000’ by 15%. Would it matter in pvp? No not rlly, ppl can easily evade those arrows from that range. Would it matter in the open world? Yes, but not alot. The majority of the rangers wants the ranger to be a good ranged class. I challenge you Mr Hrouda to try the LB ranger in more difficult dungeons, with a ranged second weapon set. I did play a SB condition build for quite a while and the constant need of flanking and bosses that always rotated themselves to face me made me so angry at times, that I’m still not considering to return to that build. And meleeing with a ranger is not something I would want to do. Even if I wanted to the low GS dmg, or the 1 handed sword rooting would ruin the experience.
Well, I for one don’t think that balancing is a priority at all at the moment for any class. Also the fact that Robert H is repeatedly stating that he plays a ranger and it’s amazing is not helping either.
Yeah, but it’s also apparent that he’s pretty full of himself and is only interested in hearing opinions that are the same as his. I doubt he fools anyone.
But, as an aside. I’d really like to see him play his Ranger and keep his pet alive throughout dungeon encounters. I’d almost pay to see that.
Well he knows dungeon mechanics the way no player does. With exact timers, unnoticeable boss emotes and everything, even so I’d like to see how he does it. It would be fun to see him playing that melee ranger of his in 40+ fractals, while not only not dying, but keeping the beast alive.
Nice thread.
I as well have been tracking dev movements for some time now. I noticed that devs haven’t spoken about most professions lately.
Important facts:
- Rangers aren’t being discussed about on forums. (regarding this subforum and the thread).
- Necromancers (my other top profession) are in the same spot – absolute denial of existence on dev part. Most notable example lately – a bug/fix with our profession mechanic which I tried to get explained with numerous people on numerous occasions, without success.
- Jon Peters made an appearance after last patch few times, when I last checked – he wrote 3-4 posts on mesmer forums. He also mentioned undocumented elementalist changes and later added them to the notes after the patch.
- Devs are very picky about whose question they choose to answer.
- There is no sign of any change happening in the near future.
- Increased activity in sPvP forums regarding PvP in general after the patch (they mentioned they use to have more time after a patch hits the live environment).
Fun fact:
#i love how everyone just ignore warriors like it’s not even there.
Warrior is a well rounded class to be honest. 100b should be nerfed, but apart from that it has many working & balanced builds.
You guys view data and only see one thing. My class isn’t getting all the attention.
Perhaps it may have been determined that necro and ranger and engineers are the baseline and the other classes are getting more attention becuase they have one or two op issue. Yes this is just speculation. But not anymore than yours.Serraphin, you are missing an important bit of data. While we Rangers have stated (some have raged) that we need improvements, our discontent at the moment is that a game designer has stated his belief that Rangers are the profession most in need of improvement and since that statement has ignored us.
So we can’t be the “baseline”.
Yes, but when he said this he didn’t say we were weak, he flat out said our utilities were boring, ifour utilities are boring, and they plan to fix that, that means they’re going to be changing our utilities which probably means some sort of overhaul. That could take some time, especially when they’re looking at balancing everything, adding more content each month, trying to get sPvP as an esport, etc etc etc.
We very well -could- be a baseline, but a very boring baseline.
Increasing longbow dmg by 5-15% & returning the shortbow fire rate to normal would take about 15 seconds to a balance dev, testing it wouldn’t be too bad either. :-)
Its easier to get the skins for pvp. Arcane Sliver+Arcane Powder+Paid tournament tokens+Short/longbow tokens. You need multiple attempts before you get critical success in crafting it.
I’d like to use it in pve

I’d love to know where this Bow is from as well. I’m yet to see one in pve, or on the TP. Pretty much the only cool looking longbow skin aside Azureflame and the Fractals Longbow.
