With out PAE his system ram is only 2.25GB out of the possible 4GB due to the presence of his GPU.

I knew there was a 4gb limit with 32 bit OS, but I had no idea the VRAM on a video card had any bearing on it. O_O

Guess that explains why I used to have crashing issues with LOTRO that went away when I installed 64 bit Win 7 lol.

Still though, I’d like to understand why this is. Is there a thing I can research that explains this? (I’m mostly self taught, so there’s plenty I don’t know).

Do you have the north or south waypoints in lions arch? You could just die, and then waypoint north or south, and run out of the portal there to get out.

Also, as far as the lag goes try this: When you login, and load a character, in the chat box type /ip and hit enter. It will show you the IP of the server you are on. Open command prompt and try pinging it. Type (without quotes)

“ping IPaddressGoesHere -t”

It will continuously ping that IP. Press Ctrl + V to stop it. Let us know what you get.

I’m no expert but that part strikes me as a possible driver issue. It seems like it’s not loading certain game resources. Did you Uninstall the NVidia drivers/application from control panel when you upgraded?

I would try a driver cleaner to make sure you don’t still have remnants of NVidia drivers on your computer still. I’m not sure if DriverCleaner is still free but if you google it you can find the website. There is another one that I cannot remember the name of (sorry, I’m at work and don’t have all my stuff handy )

I would remove NVidia display AND your AMD display driver, and then reinstall the AMD driver.

That’s why I brought up the direct x thing. If I remember correctly guild wars 2 was built around DX 9 and when reading up on the issues it seemed to be specific to DX 9 games. Games like BF3 and BF4 that were built around DX11 don’t have the issue (or at least the issue I had with my 7950).

The issue I had also didn’t ever show up in 3DMark/benchmarks, or Artifact checkers that I ran for hours upon hours at a time.

I’ve been suffering from the same lag. Heck, tis this lag thats making me miss out on the whole Escape from LA event, and its so abd I can’t even run a normal dungeon.

I hope this problem can be fixed soon.

If you can, I would suggest trying a Proxy service for now. Lowerping is the one I use and it’s only a measly $7 a month. It seems to get me around whatever garbage I pass through that makes me lag. At least you’ll be able to enjoy the game and it’s cheaper than switching ISP’s which may not help anyways.

If the problem was tied to AMD, there would be a lot more people reporting a similar problem I would think. But in any case, I haven’t seen such a thing happen with GW2, on both my 7850 and 7660G + 7670M laptop, on Windows 7, 8.1, and Linux.

It could have been that there was a problem physically with the cards that has since been resolved. This was at least a year ago for me and at the time there were quite a decent number of posts about the same sort of issue across many of the 7xxx series (even vids on youtube about Radeon 7950 or 7970 flickering) though there were also people stating they had no issues so I don’t doubt there are those that work fine. Really don’t know. Bad batch maybe?

Everything I was reading made it sound like the issue had already existed for a while and people who had RMA’d their cards got ones back that did the same thing. I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle so I decided to just jump back to NVidia. Really liked the card though if it worked. The price/performance ratio was WAY better than the NVidia line at that time. I believe the GTX 670 cost me about $200 more than the Radeon 7950.

My buddy actually bought a 7950 at the same time and he said he does see the issue occasionally as well but he never RMA’d his.

I’ve used both NVidia and AMD cards. In fact my last cards were Radeon HD 5850. Loved them, but these types of issues are why I returned my AMD Radeon 7950 for an overpriced (at the time) GTX670. Had a similar thing to this. Sometimes polygons on the ground would flash black, sometimes white flickers.

I saw a lot of similar posts on forums about the 7xxx series of cards. It’s either the terrible drivers or it was an issue with the 7xxx chips themselves and they can’t handle the clockspeeds they are being shipped with.

The issues I had were visible in Guild Wars 2, Skyrim, and Lord of the Rings Online, but not Battlefield 3 (this was back when I had the 7950). I think it had something to do with the direct x version the game was developed for. Direct X 9 games had the glitches more so than direct x 11 games.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sir Kaboomski.1508

I think this would be pretty cool to be honest, but it would break the mechanic for being able to make 2 dual wield sets on certain characters while only having to slot a main hand set and an offhand alt.

For example, I run D/D on main and then just offhand Pistol on the swap. This way I only needed to make 2 ascended daggers instead of 3.

A better example would be someone that runs S/P and D/P. If I have S/P on the main and mainhand Dagger on the swap I wouldn’t want it to think the single dagger is by itself.

Depending on your build it could get expensive to slot that extra weapon to make the dual wield work.

Negative initiative?

in Thief

Posted by: Sir Kaboomski.1508

Sir Kaboomski.1508

Essentially you’re increasing the initiative pool.

Except that with this concept, if you have 1 initiative, and you use CnD (6 initiative) you get negative 5 initiative, and cannot use another skill until you have at least 1 positive initiative. So you couldn’t use heartseeker for example, which only uses 3, until you regen a total of 6 initiative (5 for the negative and 1 for the positive) so it really isn’t a functional increase.

So I swapped to D/P for funzies.

Last week there was this particular thief on the enemy team in my server’s matchup that was running S/P.

And man… it was a barrel of lulz.

Full zerk, glassy as hell. Hangs back most of the time unless odds were in his favor – and then… 2..3,3,3,3,3,3,3 (slight exaggeration). But seriously, I had never seen a S/P thief be able to spam 3 so many times in a row. It was literally the only attack button he ever pressed aside from the 2 opener, and kitten if you took that full 3 spam it was over.

When he wasn’t evading he was a 2-hit kill with D/D but it was fun as hell dropping blinds on him with D/P.

D/P: to counter that sh**, and also mini hammer-trains. :P

Negative initiative?

in Thief

Sir Kaboomski.1508

I don’t even know what is going on here… I stopped reading the posts when I realized nobody understood the OP lol so hopefully my post is relevant.

To throw my input in on the OP itself:

I can see it both ways.. Technically it could be a life saver if you think about that one instance where you REALLY needed to be able to do “insert skill name here” and you couldn’t because you only had 1 initiative instead of X amount.. But personally I see it as more of a negative. It’s kind of like getting a bigger desk, or a bigger closet, bigger inventory bags, an extra bank tab, either way they still get chock full of junk and you need more space again.

So either way, once you use that one extra attack you’re still out of initiative and now it will take even longer to regen usable initiative. I think it’s safer to wait 2 more seconds and with awareness usually you can do SOMETHING to save yourself. You’d be surprised how much you can get away with just waiting for initiative regen (as long as it’s not a 1vX).

I think it also would cause more issues with lag. Most people I know will mash the same skill repeatedly to make sure it fires (seen it on youtube vids of GW2 all the time) which is ok when your skill just goes on cooldown and won’t fire twice.
Thief already SHOULDN’T do this but sometimes I have issues where Heartseeker or CnD or something won’t work when I try to use it one time and I have to hit it again, only to heartseeker twice. If this happens when I’m low on initiative and it puts me into negative initiative this could really kitten me up.

@ P Fun Daddy: I disagree. It’s not like it would help you get 2 CnD off to double backstab someone or something because of the revealed debuff and the skills that don’t reveal you you can already use more than once anyways, I don’t see how, for the reasons I stated above, that this would be useful over how initiative already works.

Overall I wouldn’t support this change.

Now, let’s address your comment about the assassin getting overrun and killed. In real life, in every movie and show that features assassins (as a main character), and in every game you play as a thief/assassin/ninja do they just stand still and take it when they are being overwhelmed and let themselves be killed? Or (as I more often see happen) do they fight until they realize they are not strong enough and then do whatever they can to run away and survive to fight another day.

Exactly.. It’s by design. It mimics the exact thing you see on movies and TV and other games. Whether or not someone likes the design is merely personal opinion.

Suggested Thief Runes

in Thief

Posted by: Sir Kaboomski.1508

Sir Kaboomski.1508

I’m using Runes of Strength with the pretty standard 0/30/30/10/0 build. You get might on stealth with the grandmaster minor trait so you get at least 2 stacks of might when you set up a backstab and the 6/6 set bonus gives you +5% damage when you have might.

I actually run D/P and D/D at the same time. I run Bloodlust until 25 stacks, and also have Applied Strength and Applied Fortitude. Used with the trait Hidden Killer (didn’t like Executioner, as the failed crits on BS happened far too often because I only have a base 49% crit chance.)

I used to run scholar runes but the amount of time I spend above the health threshold to get the 6/6 bonus from those isn’t all that much because I run in a small havoc group and we like to fight groups bigger than us lol.

In case of a thief, I can hang around their group all the while stealthing, all for kittens and giggles, and leave when I decide I’ve had my fun. Maybe even take a couple caught out of position. And this is regardless of how squishy I’m built. Do you not see this as something that’s imbalanced?

Absolutely not. Why? Because it’s by design. You shouldn’t even attempt to do such a thing on another squishy class, because you aren’t designed for it. Classes all have strengths and weaknesses.

Sure as a thief you might be able to take out some that wander too far, but you must first lure them away, and hit with a surprise attack. You must constantly regain stealth if you do so, or decide to keep poking them, but more often than not you aren’t going to accomplish much.

How many movies/cartoons/videos/TV shows/video games have you seen with some sort of ninja/assassin character appeared out of nowhere, owns someone, disappears again into the shadows, waits for the next guy to check what happened and then re-emerges to own that guy too. Overrun him however, and he will run, and hide, until he can get the hell out.

Thief just happens to have strengths inherent to the character type they portray which is what kittenes people off.

I see so many thieves defending shadow arts claiming it’s the thief version of being “tanky”. In every 1v1 scenario, a S/D acrobat and D/P trickery can hold its own and escape when outnumbered. Having tankiness along with massive burst and amazing condition removal along with great mobility and escapes isn’t really how a class is supposed to be. Please don’t use warriors as an example, as they are broken atm because of this very fact.
If you go berserker as a thief, you cannot expect the same tankiness a soldier’s/cleric’s guardian has. If you can hold a group of 5 people off by perma-stealthing, when you also have the ability to disengage and/or burst, there’s something wrong with that picture. I’d love to see an argument otherwise.

PS: I’m talking strictly WvW here. SA isn’t strong at all in sPvP as you can’t afford to leave your team in a 4v5 while you remain in stealth for long intervals.

How are you going to hold off a group of 5 while “permastealthing”? What are you holding them off from? I’ll tell you what you aren’t doing. You aren’t preventing that group from capping a camp/tower/keep, because you can’t cap while stealthed.

Are you holding them off from killing you and then running away so they don’t get a bag? Maybe, but wow that’s such a problem seriously.. because you deserved that bag, obviously…

I mean do you really think one thief is going to burst down a group of 5 competent players before they can kill it? Either they’ll eventually kill you, or they’ll res the downed faster than you can stomp.

It just isn’t going to happen. I mean this isn’t some Batman kitten where you just go all kungkittenmaster while surrounded by enemies and after a full page of thwack, kapow, thud you win at life and defeat everybody.

Maybe you can slowly take down a group of 5 completely uncoordinated squishy targets, but you aren’t going to do it by “permastealthing”. It is literally impossible.

Minor issue really, but really annoying. Supply depots are one of the things you can CnD off of to gain stealth, but they also can reveal you. Not only that but the hitbox is HUGE. If I somehow manage to swing within 3ft of the general area of the supply platform I can be revealed – with nothing targeted… wut? You can CnD off walls but you don’t get revealed if you start heart-seekering on top of a target-able wall. What is the point of the supply depot’s gigantic/non targeted/revealing hitbox?

No, D/P is not easy to counter. I’ve tried every so called counter to D/P’s stealth, none work because of the fact that as long as that Black Powder goes down, there’s nothing you can do to stop the stealth. And once in it, while it’s obvious where they’re going to strike, it doesn’t change that any and all of your defenses against it are on a cooldown. You could stop 2 Backstab attempts and then be screwed because all your defenses are on cooldown for the next 20+ seconds. Stealth on D/P is OP, and there is no guaranteed counter, no way to stop it. I play thief, I love it, I don’t want it to be nerfed into the ground…but I won’t deny that the accessibility to stealth on D/P needs a serious change.

I counter BP + HS quite often…

Also, don’t forget you can drop a channeled skill on them before they stealth and the game will let you magically follow their every move until your channel completes, perhaps even resulting in downing them.

Only channeled skills I know of that we thieves have is P/P #3 and Dagger Storm (which is useless unless you’re fighting multiple enemies).

True when speaking of thieves, yes, however going up against D/P is all about being on the offensive vs defensive. I’ve experienced that being on the defensive is the disadvantage here. I got caught by a D/P and immediately had to go on the defensive. I could prolong my life but then I made a mistake and was running out of choices due to initiative cost, I made another mistake and boom.. dead.. Later found him again and we traded offense/defense a few times until finally turned the tables, pressured him into the defensive, messed up his BP+HS, and downed him.

I do hate fighting D/P just because we stalemate eachother a lot but it’s still very much beatable, just not instantly.

Probably server lag, or they were lagging.. He might not have been where visually his character was represented on the map. I’ve noticed this a few times in the FA/TC/SOS matchup. Sometimes there is map lag/skill lag, sometimes I will go for a backstab right behind someone and I don’t get a miss/evade/block or anything, just nothing happens because technically they aren’t actually “there”.

Had an ele vapor form when downed and they moved all erratically and when the vapor form ended they couldn’t be stomped because they weren’t where they showed on screen.

I am also for the addition of more armor skins. I would spend SO much more money if there were tons more GOOD looking armor skins.

I play medium armor classes and I think we need more medium armor sets that aren’t extremely bulky or trenchcoats. The ascended medium coat is great length-wise! Need more like this. The rest of the ascended medium is pretty terrible though especially on a female human. We do not need gigantic coats/gloves/boots/shoulders and silly looking helmets with spikes on them or monocles especially as thieves..

I am also for many more options for all armor types. We all need way more variation that can be bought with gems but they must be unique from armor obtainable by other means.

But seriously… give me something to throw my money at to support the game! More cosmetics is the way to go!

OMG! Thieves can heal while in stealth!!

Why when a necro who is in your party goes into deathshroud is the HP bar on the party stats panel the same color as when out of deathshroud? Shouldn’t it change to the puke green color that it does on a targeted necro?

Kind of a pain because sometimes I lose track of the necroes in my party and I see the HP bar going down and am like “crap they’re almost dead” when really it’s just their deathshroud pool draining.

I don’t play a necro but I thought this was worth mentioning since I run with 1 or 2 almost all the time (guildies).

I just go around, then bam! Dead! I got hit by 18k spikes out of nowhere. And when I see the thief in front of me and I manage to avoid his attack, he will just go in stealth in another gimmicky way and backstab me from behind! I can’t even use my heal, because his burst is on a 0s CD!

For reference, this is my build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fEEQJAodnEElXbdN6GQYrAhcIDDHIgxBQQkittenHiBA-jkxAYrAm8KiGbLoIasKJMVJRUtToIa1yAYPCA-w

I seriously hope Anet will fix stealth because at the moment it’s just too much. I get killed sometimes by zerker rangers, but at least I can see them and if I get killed it’s because they are good (their bear hits really hard and must require a lot of micromanagement to be effective!). But when it comes to thieves, it’s just 0 risk, 101% reward, go stealth kill people #yolomode

Very well said

You are the million player to confirm and experience this outrageousness class design.

So the next question is.

How many more years will it take for our concerns to be heard and addressed ?

4+ years ??

I say 10+ years

The Merchant uses superior bartering skills to quickly bankrupt his enemies.

Should be an exciting class.

His Elite skill is “All Sales Final!”

This is obviously a troll thread or you are incredibly new to PvP.

  • Classes are different playstyles.
  • Build matters.
  • Player’s ability in PvP matters.
  • Environment matters.

You can kill an NPC fast as a Zerk Ele.. well done.
PvP is completely different.

Yes, I’ll admit Thieves do have extremely high burst, and they are probably the best 1v1 class in-game. Ele’s on the other hand have the best AoE burst in-game.
I don’t see any Thieves going to Ele forum and complaining they died in a blob fight because an Ele was hitting them 4k’s with Fire Storm in a huge radius?

Ele can give group support and buffs.
Ele is the only class that can destroy siege far back within walls.
Ele has superior AoE.

Thief has none to little of these, I don’t see many (if any at all) threads in your sub-section by Thieves complaining?

Every class/build fits into their own slot of what it’s intended to do. Thieves are almost only for DPS as they provide little Support. Ele can do all, and at that.. within the 1 build.

I crafted a Thief to 80 2 weeks ago and as much as I enjoy it at the moment, I’m slowly getting bored of it due to being tunneled into playing full DPS.
I have a 66 Ele I occasionally work on by playing SPvP for +1 level tomes. I can’t say I’ve played much of my Ele (more than my Thief though) but I will say that it’s far more enjoyable for sure.

LOL

Thanks for that in-depth response.

and his build was loaded to the brim with human racials. What part of this is not a joke thread?

Still… my favorite part is the traits lol.

I haven’t lost to a d/P thief before while running D/D. Maybe I have gotten lucky, maybe I haven’t run into enough good ones. Maybe I should test it out.

Likewise I haven’t lost to a D/P thief while running D/P. (I have killed D/P though).. But mostly it’s the most pointless thing lol. That’s why I started running D/P, D/D.. it’s unexpected, and you can usually gain an edge over D/P with CnD+Steal.

On the flipside, I’ve had warriors come at me while I have D/D out, and literally run away when I whip out the pistol and smoke field their hammers/maces.

Agree with this 10000%. Annoying as hell when you have to hit tab tab tab tab tab because your game decides that the deer and moose need to die instead of the enemy running through them.

Questions about weapon sets

Sir Kaboomski.1508

I WvW mostly. Personally I run D/P with D/D as the alt set. I hate shortbow. I have one in my inventory for group play but it’s situational (to blast water/lightning fields) and unless we have our staff ele running with us and are heading into a fight where the odds are against us, I don’t have it equipped.

D/P is more about being patient and not mashing all of your skills blowing all your initiative since you do need a large amount to stealth. Usually you use pistol 5 dagger 2 for the opener to stealth and backstab, then you use the standard “autoattack” to drop DPS. If they’re a tanky target you’ll stealth up again when you regain initiative and backstab, otherwise a squishy target may have already dropped.. Everything else is situational. Headshot to interrupt heals/etc. Black powder to make those warriors miss that CC, heartseeker/shadowshot as a gap closer/finisher. Etc.

@Daze spam, it’s only a small part of the annoyance, what annoys me the most is how OP Black Powder is, yes you can try dodge the shot but why do I have to waste my dodges on that.

You’re seriously asking why you need to dodge?

Well then, why do I have to “waste dodges” on engi grenades, or better yet the crate that has an kitten ton of shooty things that all shoot you at once. Why do I have to waste dodges on ranger rapid fire pew-pew-pew that can even hit me after I stealth and why do I have to waste dodges on mesmer phantasms? I should be able to stand there and magically avoid getting hit so I can use my dodge on the next hit right?

People shoot things at you. You dodge them if you don’t want to get hit by them. If you aren’t running a counter to what you’re fighting then you can’t possibly expect to win, but if you were running at LEAST one stealth util you could drop stealth, then Pistol 1 when they exit stealth to drop the next black powder and your rapid fire channel will continue to hit even after they stealth again. Then, hell, if you used basilisk before the Pistol 1 and catch him off guard, he’d be stuck and if you’re quick enough you could probably fit in a CnD+Steal as he tries to drop another black powder.

Bottom line is you can’t counter everything no matter what build you use on any class. There’s always going to be something that could have won you a fight that you lost. That’s just the way it is.

Think of it like this. You’re on the battlefield taking guys out one by one. You feel pretty good about yourself right? Then all of a sudden a guy drives up in a tank. If all you have is an AK-47 you’re going to run the kitten away, but put an RPG in your hands and you’ll probably take your chances. You’re not going to unload your AK on it and then be like “kitten THOSE TANKS ARE SO OP! THEY NEED TO BE WEAKENED SO THAT SMALL ARMS FIRE IS VIABLE AGAINST THEM!” Sometimes you need to run away to die another day.

What is this fire effect?

I agree with this too.. too super annoying for something like shadowstep. If I’m getting my face CC’ed off sometimes depending on the terrain it’s harder to judge when shadowstep is out of range and sometimes I end up losing valuable seconds while trying to make the kitten circle turn green.

What they need to do is to give a debuff the more times you enter stealth, the debuff stacking up to 4 times. What the debuff does is it takes off a second off stealth the more times you enter it within a certain time frame (15 seconds). If you re-enter stealth within that time, you lose a second of stealth and a stack is added, but the entire stack resets. When the stack hits 4 times, all the stacks are removed, but you have a 15 second reveal. That’s the easiest way to get rid of perma stealth or stealth abusing through D/P, etc.

Note that you HAVE to have exited stealth and re-entered it, and you must be in combat mode. That way it punishes people who abuse it in combat, while leaving its normal capabilities untouched outside of it.

Repeating a skill as many times as the game mechanics allow it to because of purposeful design is not abusing a skill. There is no additional “debuff” needed other than “revealed” and you do not need to be “punished” for normal combat tactics of a backstab build.

What you’re saying, if logical should translate to:

Every time a necro pops lich form and hits 1,1,1,1,1, grasping claws damage should go down on each use.

Every time a warrior uses a movement skill to run away, the range should go down.

Every time a mesmer stealths, follow the same proposition above for thief.

Every time an engineer throws grenades they do less damage and don’t go as far.

I could go on.

I’ve had this happen if I pop a stunbreak or another instant cast skill (like thief blinding powder) while knocked down.

As far as I know doing /dance fixes it.

But it’s a bug.

For some reason I was an exception to the rule.

I was using a SATA 3 HDD drive and recently upgraded to a Samsung 840 EVO SSD and installed my Windows OS GW2 on that instead. My load times were about 20-25 seconds for lions arch on the HDD and are about the same using the SSD… so…

The SSD is fine. Ran benchmarks and the speeds are good, so I guess I just had a really fast HDD lol. It also didn’t appear to make a major difference in how fast Battlefield 4 loads.

use sata 2 instead and I promise you will see performance increase.
there are problems with sata 3. like my RIVE mobo for example sata3 is controlled by a
asmedia driver. and the driver is garbage. I have the same SSD, the Samsung 840 and I get
5Gb a second on sata2.

Hrm, well that’s interesting.. I’ll try that when I get home from work. I have the same asmedia driver on my ASrock board.
