Is the gold to gems rate fair in gw2?

The algorithm may be just a simple ratio of the two “depositories” within the exchange, one for gold, one for gems, and a 15% sink applied to when gold comes in and goes out.

Simple long division isn’t normally considered an “algorithm”.

Don’t forget having to update the values of the depositories every time there is a transaction. That’s a very important part of the algorithm.

Assuming that is how the currency exchange operates. How do you know that the currency exchange algorithm is as simple as you say it is ?

There is no algorithm.

Do you even know what an algorithim is ?

In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm is a step-by-step procedure for calculations. Algorithms are used for calculation, data processing, and automated reasoning.

How can the currency exchange set a price without using an algorithm on the raw data ?

By saying it’s set by supply and demand, ANET are saying they are using some algorithm. They just aren’t saying what it is.

Yes I understand what an algorithm is. However saying that they are using an algorithm implies that the system is controlled by Anet.

No it doesn’t. An algorithm means it’s automated in some way. Inputs go in, algorithm does some processing, outputs come out. No need for any human intervention.

For there to be no algorithm, then ANET would have to manually adjust it.

While I agree that there is formula (which would be a better word)

Which definition of algorithm are you using ?

Because it seems a very unusual one.

The gem to gold conversion artificially creates gold

Does it really ?

John Smith disagrees

There seems to be some confusion:
The currency exchange has a supply of Gems and Gold.

If players are converting Gold to Gems, then the Amount of Gold player will receive for their gems goes up.
If players are converting Gems to Gold, then the amount of Gems players receive for Gold goes up.

The exchange rate changes based on the scarcity of each supply. You cannot inflate it, it’s an exchange rate. As players purchase in one direction, it entices purchases in the other direction.

It doesn’t create gold. It only has gold previous players have put into it. Maybe with the addition of a small startup amount ANET added on release because the algorithm doesn’t work well with a quantity of 0.

About the only thing you could do that would negatively affect another player is finish an event before they get to it so they can’t join in. Some players will act like it’s the worst thing you could possibly have done and you’ve ruined their entire day/week/life. But in reality it just means they have to wait until next time (which could be as little kitten minutes) or find another similar event (if it’s for something like their champion slayer daily/monthly).

The whining is worse when you complete a temple defense event that they wanted to fail, because the retake the temple event gives bigger rewards.

Or even just the name of a single zone that we haven’t completed. If we have multiple zones incomplete, it only shows that one. Until it’s completed, then it shows the next zone.

Is the rate fair ?

That’s a very good question. If the gem<>gold exchange used buy and sell orders like the rest of the trading post, I’d call it fair because I understand how that would lead to a fair value.

But the current algorithm ?
I have no idea how it decides what price to set. I have no data about how many gems are held by the currency exchange over a long period of time.
Maybe it is fair. Maybe it sets the price a bit too high. Maybe it sets it a bit too low. We don’t have enough information to know.
A better question would be: Does ANET know if the algorithm of the currency exchange is fair ?

I’ve found two new things about this error:
– Switching to any other part of the trading post (say, the currency exchange) then switching back often stops the error.
– If I click the ok button after listing a sell order, instead of just clicking the next item I want to sell, I don’t see the error. Until I skip clicking the ok button because it’s slow.

That makes me think that this is an error. Not some useless anti-bot method. Not something to ease performance*. Just something broken within the TP that spits out a very unhelpful error message.

*The delay it takes for the ok button to show, that seems like it’s there to control performance.

If you’re wearing blues or whites, don’t stick anything into the upgrade slot. Upgrading them means you can’t sell them when you are done with them.

Unless the item in question is one that you’re going to replace very soon,

For me, I upgrade my characters gear every 5 levels. So, until I get to 80 and buy exotics, all the gear will be replaced soon.

Though I have found one oddity on the TP. At the levels where I buy greens, I often find that a green with an upgrade is cheaper than one of the same stats without the upgrade. So I usually buy those with the upgrades inserted.

Those of you who have played GW 1 will know of the trader NPCs. While ANET never explained the algorithm they used to determine their prices, they seemed to work well. When they had the item in stock, the price they set for an item was considered the market rate by everyone. The theory Mr Illogical has is that those traders would have eliminated WTS spam for those items.

The fact is that people still tried WTS spam to sell stuff that they could dump at the trader because the difference the traders had between their buy and sell prices. Even if it was not in their best interest. For example back before Factions was released, I had a very expensive rune drop for me. One that was sitting at the maximum price on the trader. I sold it through a website that helped arrange player to player trades. After I sold it I looked at the difference between the price the trader was offering and the price I got. Then I looked at how much gold I could have earned if, instead of arranging a trade through that website, I just sold the rune to the trader and played GW1 (not even farming) for that amount of time. I can’t remember the exact numbers, but I do remember that I decided that if an item could be sold to a trader NPC, I would either sell it to the NPC or hoard it.

Other players never learned that lesson. They saw that if they stood around WTS spamming they could charge a price between the traders buy and sell prices, which would be a good deal. Except they seemed to ignore how long it took to sell anything via WTS spam. One example that sticks in my mind is one guy trying to sell a cheap rune for 1 platinum via WTS spam. I saw him spamming, then left to go play some part of GW1. I then came back to that city an hour later seeing him still trying to sell that same rune via WTS spam. In that time I had made about 2 platinum from killing enemies.

It would have been in that guys best interest to just sell to the trader NPC then go off and play GW1. He would have had more currency at the end of it.

He was not a one off. Items that could be sold to an NPC trader were regularly listed in the WTS spam. They don’t spam in GW2 because it’s obvious that there is no secure trading method. If they don’t see it, someone will point it out to them. That scares them away from mail trades, which means they can’t see the spam paying off. So they don’t spam.

Lets bring some evidence into the discussion. Because evidence trumps theory.

1. An interface for trading with individual players makes it safe and easy to trade with eachother. There is no valid reason not to have it as it reduces scamming, and therefore, reduces invalid support tickets.

Eve Online shows how wrong you are on this point. Item exchange contracts are a secure player to player trading system. One player creates the contract, saying what they are offering and the specific things the other player will give them. Then another player comes along, reads the contract which says exactly what’s on offer. They hit accept, everything changes hands.
That’s as secure as player to player trading can get. It’s used for most of the scams that happen in Eve. The only major scam that doesn’t is ISK doubling (give me some ISK, I’ll give you twice that back)

3. WTS spamming has little to do with individual trades. It occurs because there’s no public interface for trading. WTS spam is negligible because of the existence of a public auction house in the game.

Eve Online once again shows that you are wrong. The trading post was copied from Eve’s market. But if you travel to Jita, the main trade hub of Eve Online, all you will see in local chat is the trade spam. Or scam spam, because this is Eve Online.

Either way, reducing WTS spam is not a valid reason to not have ability to trade individually.

How is “It works” not a valid reason ?
Because it does work to kill trade spam.

Now I’d like to see evidence about how good a secure player to player trading system will be for GW2 as a whole.

Except “Projected Profit” is what you will see in the pick up tab from the sale.

What definition of profit are you using ?

I use income minus expenses. The listing fee is an expense. Therefore is should be subtracted from the sale price to calculate profit.

If you’ve got a definition for profit that fits what the trading post does, I’d like to see it.

Or lets look at this another way. Take a player who is new to GW2. How are they supposed to know that the projected profit doesn’t include the listing fee before they sell something ?
There is nothing in game to tell them or to suggest that they need to look up information on the trading post elsewhere. Lets say they have an item worth 1 gold. It would be natural for them to assume that the 5silver listing fee is taken when they list the item, then they get 95 silver in the pickup tab when the item sells. Leaving them up 90 silver from where they started.
Instead they only get 90silver, meaning a profit of 85 silver. 5 Silver has vanished without explanation until they start complaining about the TP stealing it.

(multiple of the same item is handled differently depending how many players are buying how much, hence “Projected” and not exact).

Rounding errors have nothing to do with my complaint.

There is no way to trade with other players. The closest you can get is one player sending the items/gold by mail and then the other player sends his part of the trade. If you can trust the player who sends second.

As for why this is done, that’s simple. With no way to trade directly with other players there is no incentive for WTS spam.
Can you think of a better way to keep map chat free of WTS spam ?

How the vendor price interacts with inflation is something you’ll also have to consider. While an items value is low enough that it’s better to sell it to an NPC than on the trading post, that item acts as a gold faucet producing gold every time it gets sold to an NPC. Say inflation happens and the items value goes up, probably because it’s worth buying this item to salvage. People sell it at the trading post. Which is a gold sink, because of the TP fees.

So if there is ever a massive surge of inflation, that pulls up the price of many items until they stop being vendor trash. Thus they stop being a gold faucet and instead become a gold sink.
The reverse also happens.

TP light/medium/heavy filter! Why not?

Because transparency/ease of use is something ANET doesn’t seem to want the Trading Post to have. For example: Projected “Profit”. Profit is income minus expenses. The listing fee is an expense. But it’s not included in the Projected “Profit” value. Nor is there any indication that the TP is dodgy enough that you should look up how it works. So when a new player sees a projected profit value that is above the vendor price, they think it’s better to sell on the TP. Even when the listing fee means their net income is less than the vendor price.

Professional Flippers: What advice a Noob?

Be prepared to change the item you’re flipping regularly. Any item that you see as being a good one to flip will be noticed by other people. Who will flip it until it is not longer a good item to flip, then move on to somewhere else.

Stay away from items that aren’t dropping any more. Nobody will fill your buy orders.

If the quantities in your buy/sell orders are too high, any flipper who you outbid/undercut by 1c will change their prices. But if the quantities are low enough they won’t because they think your orders are just non-flipper activity. If you buy/sell a small amount, then repeat when the first order is filled, you shift the same quantity with a lower chance of being noticed.

This site is useful, once you figure out what trade activity value works for you. A higher value means the item will flip faster, but profit per flip is lower. Go for high ROI over high profit per flip, at least until you have enough gold that it’s your time, not your gold, limiting how much you flip.

Going with todays dailies:
– Condition applier. Even with power builds I can’t avoid completing this one.
– Leveler. Easy. Just stick to one character for a bit.
– Gather. A few seconds out of the way while I’m doing open world stuff. Maybe 5 minutes if I stick to gathering alone.
– Fractals: I can understand not getting this one if you don’t like FOTM.
– Recycler: This takes 1 minute at most. Buy some cheap fine/masterwork items on trading post, salvage them for more luck.
– Events. Another easy one

That’s 5 dailies that are easily obtained through PvE, plus the fractal one. So I’m not seeing your problem.

infusions on trinkets that fit the build are already on the original link…keep in mind these infusions cost a lot…

The listed infusions are agony resist infusions, not WvW infusions. Agony resist is useless for this character as it’s not going into fractals.
Lets look at my rings:
One will be Adelbern’s Royal Signet Ring, which has an offensive slot. So I’ll just stick the Mighty WvW Infusion in it, since it has power like the one listed.

But the other ring will be Rurik’s Royal Signet Ring with a defensive slot. So my choices are to take the useless stat of agony resistance on an expensive omni infusion, or to take a Healing, Resilient or Vital WvW infusion.

Same thing for my earrings. Are the expensive omni infusions, with a useless stat, really worth it ?

– What should the staffs second sigil be ?
I’m guessing sigil of accuracy so I’ve got the same sigils on both weapon sets.
– What infusions for weapons and armor ?
I’m guessing power infusions for weapons. For armor, I’ve got to choose between WvW defensive infusions or omni infusions with agony resistance, which is a useless stat for this character.
– Offensive/defensive infusions on rings/earrings.
Earrings and rings are unique. Meaning one will have an offensive infusion slot, the other has a defensive slot. For the defensive slot, I’ve got to choose between a defensive WvW infusion or an omni infusion.

I picked necromancer as my first class because the BWEs showed me that I liked the ground targeted AOE, and the necromancer staff had more of it than other weapons. Then ended up not using the staff much because it often wasn’t useful with the builds I ran.

Are there viable WvW builds for necromancers that use a lot of ground targeted AOE ?
It doesn’t have to be all they do, as being viable is more important, but I’d still like as much of it as possible.

The stock market system is more beneficial to flippers because it makes flipping easy. But that means more people flipping for profit, which brings the buy and sell prices closer, meaning less profit on each item flipped.

There are two big things that help a market resist manipulation, neither of which are exclusive to either system:
– Easy access to historical data that would show evidence of manipulation. For example, Eve Online has graphs of the quantity and price items sold for. Those graphs show a price spike when someone’s manipulating an item. GW2 doesn’t have those graphs, despite both games using a stock market system.
– Volume traded. The more an item is traded, the more gold you need to manipulate its price. So a global trade system is more resilient than a server based one.

You may have chosen a bad time to return – currently communities are in bad shape and tc is especially in a bad way. May pay to wait a while till the megaserver gets fixed in towns and server choice matters again.

Back when I left GW2 I was already seeing some zones as mostly deserted. So I like the idea of a megaserver to repopulate those zones.

Are the problems people seeing because their worlds population is mixed in with others across multiple instances of the same zone ?

Or is it that there aren’t many people from one world and they are being drowned out by the people from other worlds sharing the same instance ?
The first is a problem that should get fixed. The second is an unavoidable consequence of a megaserver, and one I find preferable to a nearly empty zone.

As for roleplay, I’ve got no interest in RP within an MMO. They simply restrict my freedom too much for any RP that I can enjoy.

It’s a text file. Reading it might give you a clue what it’s about.

It’s also not present on my install, so I am curious.

Thinking of returning. I have some questions.

I found a raw damage DPS build for a necromancer. I plugged it into this build calculator. It’s bit out of date, but it’s the best I’ve got right now.

Ascended loadout. The dagger #1 chain does:
990×2, then 768, then 1317. For a total of 4065 damage.

With exotics dagger #1 does 890×2, 690, 1184 for a total of 3654

That’s a difference of 411.
411/3654 = 11.2%

That’s an 11% difference before taking crits into account.

Exotics get a 61% crit chance and 90% extra crit damage, ascended gets 63% crit chance and 99% extra damage.

To account for crits, take the damage calculated earlier and multiply it by (1+crit chance*bonus damage)
Exotics: 3654*(1+.61*.9) = 5660
Ascended: 4065 (1+.63*.99) = 6600

6600-5660 = 1040
Or an 18% increase in damage.

Now I know that crit damage has been reduced. So, until I get hold of the new numbers, all I can be sure of is that full ascended gear increases DPS by somewhere between 11% and 18% over full exotic gear for a raw damage build.

Well, before taking into account any other on crit bonuses like barbed precision or sigil of strength. Which would widen the gap, since they provide a bigger bonus to ascended gear.

Thinking of returning. I have some questions.

Can’t answer most, but I can answer the question about the necromancer trait reset.

One of the previous patches did touch on traits in a major way. Any class with a major overhaul in traits (several traits moved tiers, etc) got their traits reset so that builds could be rearranged based on the changes without costing the player money. That and it was probably easier to code for that than if player has X skill in Y tier change it to Z skill.

That explains it.

GvG is guild versus guild PVP mode which officially doesn’t exist.
unofficially, guilds from rival servers meet up in obsidian sanctum map in WWW and set their matches there.

Thanks.

not sure what is bouncing attack, maybe thief shortbow auto or ranger axe auto?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bounce

While it’s easy to find a list of bounce skills, I don’t know which classes have viable builds that make heavy use of the bounce skills.

about 5% without infusions.

I’d like the total amount, with infusions.

Or someone to point me at a build calculator tool that calculates for exotic and ascended gear and give me some complete builds that I can plug into it to see the numbers myself.

Thinking of returning. I have some questions.

I’m thinking of returning to GW2 but, after poking around the wiki and forums for a bit, I’ve got a few questions:

I’ve seen a few people mention GvG on the forums, but no mention of it in the wiki. What are they talking about ?
Edit: Answered

Which classes have viable PvE or WvW builds that have a lot of bouncing attacks ?

Which US worlds have which unofficial communities on them ?
Edit: Partially answered: Tarnished Coast has a RP community and the megaserver has caused them problems

Ascended items:
Is there any tool where I can plug in which resources I have (gold, laurels, fractal relics, etc) and it tells me which ascended items I can acquire with them ?

By what percentage does a full loadout of ascended gear improve a characters performance over a full set of exotic ?
I can use this to see that the stats on ascended gear is about 6% better than exotics. But that’s just the stats on the item, not taking the attributes a naked character would have into account. I’d like to see something like taking a character built for maximum possible DPS. Calculate the DPS on a full exotic set and a full ascended set. Or maybe only calculate the average damage on their #1 attack (or a full chain if it’s a chain skill), as that seems a reasonable approximation.
Looking through the wiki, power, precision and condition damage scale differently, so it looks like different builds will get a different percentage increase. If so, the more accurate numbers I get the better.

Edit: Answered: Between 11% and 18% damage increase for a raw damage build using berserkers . Before taking any on-crit effects into account.

Less serious questions:
I did log on before the April 15 update to find that the trait points on my necromancer had been reset. But not on my other characters. Does anyone have any clue why ?
Because I’m sure I left that character with the trait points allocated. Not that it’s something to complain about. Before the update it was just a free, unexpected, trait reset. After the update, all trait resets are free.
Edit: Answered: There were free trait resets with some balance updates.

Am I the only one who feels it would be a bit wrong to level a character to 20 using the experience scroll that character got for its birthday ?

I’ve had a few sell orders up about 2 weeks now. How can I tell if I should leave those orders up, or cancel them and relist the items at a lower price ?
