Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Rangers and Thieves are intended to be the roamers, that’s why they get it. Both of those classes also suck in zergs (according to the community anyway).
Everyone shouldn’t have everything…
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Ranger is average in sPvP,pve, good/average roaming in WvW and really bad in Zergs.
Ranger is not ‘really bad’ in zergs…
Spirit Ranger can bring:
150 precision for everyone
Water field
Fire field
AOE poison
Protection for everyone
Burning for everyone
10% damage increase for everyone
Passive healing for everyone
Group rez for everyone
That’s just off the top of my head…
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
I think it creates some quite nice numbers. The crit damage is the big benifit.
I would run it with truffle steak and sharpening stone to get the power up and the crit chance over 50%.
Too bad its such an insane grind to get it!
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
tldr – Put the time in to learn your class. Find a playstyle that fits your personality. Rangers are more than competitive in WvW
You are completely correct Foranzi. I feel like Ranger is in quite a good place tbh.
And you only have to take a look at the other class forums and see ppl complaining about rangers to see that.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Obvious thing to me is swap that sharpening stone for a tuning crystal. You’re built more for condition damage, not power/crit.
Even then tho, you don’t have much condition damage compared to BM bunker. How are you going to kill anything?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
So Xorus you reckon vitality is not required either? If you’ve got the necessary healing?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Critical damage increases your base damage by 200%, so wouldn’t it be better to increase that rather than the 40% increase to base damage?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Well don’t forget every pet has 4 of their own abilities as well, 1 of which always gets used straight after pet activation. So actually we have at least three ‘F’ abilities at the ready, which can also be swapped out for a large number of variations.
Its actually a lot better than some classes…
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
That’s alright, just throw a truffle steak and a sharpening stone on there
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Ranger just plays so much better in PvP when you try to build around evasion and regeneration.
That is what I have found too but I don’t get why. I think I just need an explanation as to why regen seems to be better than toughness. Because I would much rather run knights/cavalier and max crit damage.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Spotter coupled with 30% chance to create a fire blast on crit can do the same kind of damage, but it would benefit everyone else, and not just yourself. Making your entire zerg more likely to come out on top.
Well that 30% is wasted if you already have 50% crit (should go into crit dmg instead) – all it does is buff allies. But if you want to buff allies you wouldn’t be running a power build trying to do aoe. You would be focusing on spirits and combo fields (someone correct me if i am wrong).
I also run fire sigil on shortbow with 50% crit but I don’t think its as effective as piercing arrows.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Crit chance is 50% and crit damage is 80%+ with either build.
I’m just surprised by the toughness though. Why doesn’t it work as well?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Believe these would be the numbers with full celestial armor, runes, and trinkets. Plus Zerker Backpiece, Weapons, and 20/30/20 traits:
Power 1767
Precision 1795
Toughness 1532
Vitality 1332
Healing Power 416
Condition Damage 616
Critical Damage 104.00%
Magic Find 38.00%
Nice crit damage :P
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Just want to get some opinions here.
I seem to get much better survivability in WvW from something around:
1400 toughness
350+ healing & Dwayna runes
18k HP
than I do from full knights/cavalier gear, with 2k+ armor.
I had expected to see way more damage reduction from the knights/cavalier, but it seems that the extra hp + regen works a lot better.
Anyone else seen similar results?
FYI this is mostly roaming with usually nothing more than a 5vs5.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
- traits and skills that work a majority of the time instead of sometimes (IE spotter instead of piercing arrows, signet mastery instead of steady focus)
You consider 150 precision better than piercing arrows? Man piercing arrows is like our single best zerg ability?! The aoe damage from piercing arrows is insane against large groups. Throw in the potential aoe cripples/daze/knockback as well.
One of the best traits we have imo. And a lot more reliable than barrage.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
This is exactly what I run but instead of 30 in skrimishing I did 30 in marks to pick up spotter. At 150 it’s a great pick up
Why increase precision when you’re over 50% crit% already though? Check out the table here:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Critical_hit
Once you’re over 50% crit chance, you should try to increase crit damage rather than crit chance any further.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Manekk is correct.
I have experimented with many different power setups – full knights, knights/cavalier, clerics, zerker…
What I have learned is that regen is > toughness for a ranger, but if you are going to run regen then you need ways to trigger it, and you need to extend the duration, ie. Dwayna Runes.
I also dont see any point in running power without at least 50% crit and some decent crit damage. Power on its own is so weak for a ranger, you at least need to be crit’ing and proc’ing some fire sigils to kill things.
This is my latest attempt at this:
I don’t have all of the traited regen triggers but having 50% crit without food allows me to run mango pie. So I’ve already got constant regen, some triggering of Dwayna, plus healing spring.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Same here. Medium Whisper boots are missing 3rd colour option. Now coloured red.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
YEp same here. Missing a colour on my medium, male, whispers boots.
Can’t change it at all.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Agree that the BM Bunker build needed a nerf, but it probably should have been through lowering the pet attribute bonus so as to not affect power builds…
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
I want my ranger to look like a ‘heavy’ class. I think this is about as close as it can get
Shame these new dragon helmets change your face.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Maybe upgraded towers should tick for more points?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
It shouldn’t be done through any sort buff/debuff to stats or income, as that will encourage people to move/stay on certain servers. Rather it should be something like an increase in supply capacity for outmanned pop. Giving a small number of players the ability to cap a tower before the zerg shows up.
Or perhaps it could be an increase in siege/ram damage included with the outmanned buff.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Some sort of cost for high populations makes sense and reflects real world armies. The question is what should that cost be? What is severe enough to even out pops but not so much to alienate those affected?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Sorry if your math already encompasses this faux but isn’t there also a large variable of how many times you hit?
Eg. If you only hit twice 50/50 is better. But if you hit 3 times 45/66 is better.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
When did I say I felt that legendaries were required? I am not pursuing one nor have any interest in one, but the fact remains that it takes you 2 hours in Orr to get 1 Crystalline dust because of the DR blockers and overall nerf to drops. That’s not fun. That’s a pointless grind.
The only possible reason you need a lot of dust is you are after a cosmetic item.
Crafted Exotic level 80 armor do not require dust.
Crafted Exotic level 80 Weapons do not require dust.
Ascended accessories do not require dust (with some exception, but you can substitute for an item that does not require dust).By definition cosmetic items are not required. And were intentionally put in there by anet to give people who like grind, or working towards goals over a long period of time something to aim for.
The dust price is fueled by extremely high demand for these cosmetic items with nerfed supply rates, but by no means do you need t6 dust to play the game at a high level.
You are running around claiming that they broke their manifesto.
Which they didn’t.
You’re forgetting consumables which is what wvw players need it for.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Grenth and balthazar aren’t easy, they almost always fail. Jungle worm and frost maw need to be harder.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Agree that traps should be on the weapon side of the bar. When you spec for traps they are your weapons…you shouldn’t have to give up your signets just to use them.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
I’ve had no trouble against thieves with a power build and GS. However that build can’t beat guardians.
I’ve had no trouble against guardians with a condition bunker build, but get beaten by thieves.
Can’t have it all it seems!
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
If rares also give out t6 dust (low chance) and t5 (higher chance), things will be solved.
I think this is a good idea.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Agree they are hard to come by. But id rather see them not needed for so many things like transmutation, oils, etc. Ive never been able to save any because whenever I get them they go straight into consumables.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
I pretty much did the same. Ran bm bunker for a while and loved it but I’d rather be able to kill quickly when roaming. And I’m prepared to die quickly if thats what it takes.
I run quite similar but 350 of that power and precision is in healing along with SotW.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Not a bad idea at all I reckon.
+1
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
So…what happened to the ecto’s we were promised?
A dev clearly said lots of ecto’s…
So far, 14-15s, 5 BoH, a blueprint and a green every chest…no rares or better…
Am I just unlucky or were we lied to AGAIN…
So the chests award 14-15s every time? That might as well be a rare…
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
That is interesting. I guess that kind of says that you need to use your most effective condition in between two others to get the most out of it, and keep the clock ticking as long as possible?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Thanks for the feedback everyone.
Was giving Faux’s condition bunker build another go yesterday and managed to kill a few Guards, so I think the consensus of a power build simply not being capable is correct.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Sigil of nullification
This won’t let you beat a Guardian, this goes off once every 10 seconds, and only removes 1 boon
Alright that’s good to know.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
If the guardian is giving you problems with your build its prob because they are tanky and their onky weakness is condis. If your trap spec you can win otherwise its impossible if they are any good.
Well that’s what I was starting to think. So a good guard can be almost impossible to kill?
If you’re condition based, either Trap or BM Bunker, you’ll eat them alive.
Power Based, its going to be almost impossible
What this bro said.
That’s ok, I couldn’t make the condition builds work for me but as long as I know that I’m happy.
Thanks guys.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
So there is a boon stripping sigil! Maybe that is the answer.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]

So I WvW a lot.
T2, Fort Aspenwood, lots of roaming, sometimes zerging, occasional dueling.
I’m quite comfortable with my build now, feeling I have the perfect balance of survivability and direct damage. I’m very confident in 1v1’s, rarely losing to anyone be it thieves, mesmers, warriors, etc.
The one class I am struggling with however, is guardians. I can usually fight them to a stalemate, or I will lose due to pure exhaustion after evading and dodge rolling for 10 minutes solid.
I feel my build is very damage heavy so I am surprised that they are able to survive so easily.
I don’t understand the guard class very well but two things I do notice are that 1. they block a lot of my attacks, and 2. they heal often, and for a lot of hp.
A thief friend of mine spoke about boon stripping, but I know this is something rangers can’t do.
My question is, what are you supposed to do against well played guardians, if there is anything you can do?
Build is here:
You’re a power build, against a class with lots of Retal/Protection and probably Toughness.
Its going to be rough for you.
I’m actually not struggling to stay alive, I’m struggling to take them down. Closest I came was running Hyena and Wolf for tripple knockdown but that was during a duel and not something I want to run while roaming.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
You play on FA, so I’m not sure if I should help you or not…….
you could improve your build leaps and bounds by taking the 5 points out of NM and putting it into skirmishing for Moment of Clarity. Gives you a 2 sec stun on GS and SB, plus a big buff to you and your pets next attack.
Also, if you like mauling folks with your GS you should drop the zerker trinkets. Replace them with stats that will get your armor closer to 3k. Cavaliers or Knights would be best.
Guardians have a passive aegis buff, so use an auto attack or something like that to strip that before you try and burst. Also, use stability or stay at range to avoid the knockdowns many of them run with.
Thanks man, that is actually an outdated build link I had bookmarked, I did move those points for moment of clarity about a week ago and I’m loving it. Especially Hilt bash+Maul. Why drop the zerker trinkets for maul though? That doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve been trying to work in more power/crit damage to make the most of it?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Ugh, this made me cringe.
Thanks for the feedback man, I’m sure you’re a legend.

@OP switch to greatsword and swing like crazy.
Works every time.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Mana even if new maps were implemented it would be a lot of work for a short duration maps don’t really change the inherent gameplay which is what it seems a lot of people find stale new maps will require new maps in the future when the released maps get stale maps just turn into cyclical production and for the effort put in for something like wvw it int the best
That’s why I think we need empty maps and let the players make our own fortifications (walls, towers). The only way to keep the maps fresh is to make them empty, and leave it up to the players as to generate the content.
Maybe just throw in some random terrain changes each week as well.
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Yep needs new maps. Or maybe just make them empty maps and let us build our own fortifications.
Score off territory controlled or something.

I don’t mind the difficulty of the mobs, its meant to be a difficult area.
The respawn time on some of the veteran karka’s is way too short though. Me and a group of about 6 ppl spent a couple of minutes killing one for the escort event, only for another one to spawn immediately after and killing the NPCs again.
