Yea unfortunately I just don’t think they have the resources to support all 3 game modes. They’ve obviously made a strategic decision to primarily focus on pvp & pve.

They’re not focussing on pvp any more. And they have the staff resources, look at the numbers that have been given over the years. They are just hideously inefficient.

There are 13 Vacancies by the looks of things, but there seems to be quite the turnaround of personnel.

no thanks, plaguelands is awesome and a dps boost. for immersion we should get a ride the lighting type of skill that makes us a fast traveling plague, some orr mobs do it and cm p2 boss

Which is why I really would love to hear ANet’s actual vision/goal/purpose for WvW, since it is meaningless to argue if WvW should be casual or competitive, unless we know what ANet wants with the mode (or wanted).

This is the most important thing Anet needs to decide and communicate. The gameplay of WvW is still great but it feels like there is no direction to the game.

Stunlock Needs to Go

Stunlock is a term well known in the MMORPG communities I suggest google.

It’s been a long standing issue, it’s even a problem in PVP like why is there not a stun immunity for 5 seconds once a stun breaker is issued? Every other major mmo has put this out in their combat in PVP because some classes can chainlock players into a down position where they absolutely can’t do anything.

HoT made CC horrible in both competitive modes. I’m really surprised that the balance team has failed to correct these errors. It is the balance team which is responsible for the horrible gameplay of one player being unable to act while another whittles them down. That’s the worst kind of gameplay possible, but never seems to be addressed.

I would say that I agree there’s a political element to the game and that there has been a degree of campaigning to attract transfers. I don’t agree that this is something that should necessarily be the case and I think this whole element is undesirable and makes WvW seem tainted. Should we be thinking of the ladder, rather than the one particular world we are currently on?

I agree that each world should have a unique identity, but what? I mean, it can surely only be some kind of fluff, a world banner or a statue or something to do with the world name. I don’t think this would be enough to help people bind themselves to a server more securely, especially when their commanders are telling them to move around. BUT it is a start.

Which is why I really would love to hear ANet’s actual vision/goal/purpose for WvW, since it is meaningless to argue if WvW should be casual or competitive, unless we know what ANet wants with the mode (or wanted).

That’s easy.

  • Arenanet wants to keep players playing and buying gems.
  • There is a misunderstanding that this means churning out vast amounts of content to keep people …er… content.
  • There seems to be a perception that this should be developed in the same way as PvE.
  • Sadly, since they can’t simply add a new map/story/whatever play-it-once content and then move on to the next thing, WvW is really expensive to develop.
  • There have been attempts to satisfy WvW players with big developments like EotM, Desert map and Guild Upgrades and WvW Rank Abilities – the smaller of these changes seem to be the more successful.
  • And that, I think, is why we’re not seeing anything really big happen.

When the game launched they promised reset every TWO weeks.

If the matchups were more even, the length could be indefinite. Then you can think about adding awesome things like the Relics or Orbs.

iirc, most of the things added to WvW since launch were things players wanted (or thought they wanted), and that includes the DBL itself.

I knew people wanted a new WvW map, but people actually wanted an eotm map for WvW??

No, the playerbase specifically stated that EotM was the most wrong way to do a WvW map that could possibly be conceived. As far as I know, we still haven’t had an explanation as to why the developers thought it was a good idea to have narrow walkways and cliffs everywhere. As such we’ll never know if they’ve got the right mindset to create maps that the WvW players will like.

I appreciate that a LOT of good work went into EotM, (you just have to look at those beautiful pipes coming out from under that keep on red side, for example), but as I’ve said countless times before and since, it doesn’t have to be fancy for WvW players. We’re not really into intricacies and that they should concentrate on making areas where strategy can come into play instead.

The desert map is pretty good (especially comparatively) , they did reign in a lot of the nonsense that you find on EotM. There aren’t many of those awful super-narrow bridges at all… except at air keep, where nobody fights.

My measure of whether a map is good or not is to count the floating islands – zero being optimal.

It’s a matter of orange swords. When you have I think it’s 25 people in combat in a certain radius orange swords will pop on the map. So if you have a large number of people and they’re all attacking the door, the enemies know you have that large force there. If you don’t pop orange swords all they’ll see is white swords on the objective which could also be triggered by a single individual ‘tapping’ the keep (kill guards/damage door a bit, basically getting the objective ‘in combat’).

So if you’re running with a large force, generally don’t PvD (attack the door) unless the commander asks for it to speed up the destruction.

I’ve heard thieves claim that it’s guardian, but thieves often choose to attack guardians and seen them do so with great success.

Dh do have that reveal added on their f2.

f1, but yes, they do have that, if they can land it. I should try it with hammer 5 sometime, but I believe thief can just ignore all CC, right?

I’ve always loved that picture. It’s what WvW should be! Great banners held aloft in the glory of battle. Sadly they just get waved around at hip level then left behind on the floor (warrior banners) – when anybody bothers to run them anymore. And they don’t
look that epic except for the Battle Standard – and people only use that for the rez, so everybody is too busy doing fighting to see how amazing it looks. TL;DR I would like to see banner reworked so they always look awesome especially when posing with them.

Anyway, on topic, I agree with the OP, there are some really nice gears there – I think we’re talking helmet types (of which we do have a reasonable variety) and that main guy has a cloak, that’s what we really want (I think we don’t have cloaks because they’d clip on charrs – I’m beginning to really dislike charrs for this reason).

here are a limited number of types of runes and sigils, even if I let them sit in my bags they stack anyway. Even without extra bag slots, getting 4 18 slot bags is not that hard. this gives you almost 100 slots, how much crap do you carry with you?

I carry multiple sets of equipment because I don’t want to have to do raiding for the versatile set.

Explore a sprawling desert oasis (LOL)
Vie for control of strategic objectives (1v1 an npc)
Test yourself in challenging encounters! (pve)
Conquer unique map mechanics! (air blower thing)
Unlock tactical abilities for yourself and your allies! (they mean yourself, only guy on map)

I’m really happy that you acknowledge, by omission, the great boon to WvW that guild upgrades have been. I, for one, really appreciate this particular addition.

But desert map wasn’t abandoned after HoT, it got lots of changes, here are just a few;

  • Of course, the Desert map is controversial/divisive/Marmite.
  • The laser beam showed a lack of understanding of the WvW community. The beam from heaven seemed a bit detached from the rest of the objectives-and-siege minigame – despite there being a big battle event in the centre of the map. I honestly thought it was a great idea, because smaller servers could attack giant dominators, but players pooh-pooh'd it without giving it much consideration – which I thought was rude – but it did tell us a bit more about the mentality of the objective-oriented players. The dinosaurs really made the event annoying – I think it would have been better to just have had the cogs lying around on the ground.
  • The air blower was absolutely fine. If you couldn’t handle it, you were doing it wrong. It’s like when I see people tell others on the forum that they have bad positioning. That’s a player issue. And still they “fixed” (disabled) it for the people who complained.
  • You didn’t mention this, but it’s one of my favourite changes to Desert, you only need 2 shrines now for the lava portal/zero falling damage/sandstorm. Yet more good changes to Desert.

So I would say there have been a lot of changes for WvW since HoT, but not necessarily that BIG.

My hope for the next expansion (there’s a new thread for you to make) is that the Guild Upgrade system is fleshed out much more, but I am of the firm believe that we are in a cycle of Acretion, so my prediction is that the current systems will remain as-is and we get some new system as well and ignore WvW Tournament Tickets, WvW ranks, WvW abilities, Guild Upgrades, etc.

Anet just can’t understand or bother to try understand what makes some spec op. They just nerf and boost something and won’t even think how it affect non FotM specs.

specs need to be OP for pve reasons, its a pve game, pvp just happens cause online games without pvp is something that players avoid…

ANet will continue to enforce bad gimmicks and conter thos gimmicks with other gimmicks its a placebo to avoid balance work and pretend everything works at least in a decent way.

Think about it like this:
If the Balance Team did it’s job perfectly and the Skills and classes were perfectly balanced, what would the Balance Team do?

DH still hard counter Thief but good try and nice to see your Woe is necro is going strong lol, did I ever say Necro hardcountered thief or say Thief didn’t hard counter necro no no I did not I only specifically mentioned in regards to DH and Mesmer literally no one in this thread mentioned Necro…. bahahahaha.

The implication is this comparison, which you appear to concur with in your previous post:

  • Counter to thief (dragon hunter) has to build specifically.
    whereas:
  • Counter to necro (any thief) doesn’t have to build specifically.
    and:
  • Despite being hard counter to no other class (you state in your previous post), thief has no specific problems competing with any class.

Trouble with the current stub lock is that it’s low risk and high reward. I wish cc was not as spammable but more strategic in nature.

If you play WvW that’s when you get spammed with CC. A lot of CC.

That means you are being greatly out numbered, cc is not spamable, the truth is you are badly positioned yourself and got chain cced.

Seems it is player issue to me.

Well I can understand that you expect every player to be amazing, but it doesn’t happen and the being unforgiving and elitist would mean that a lot of players will leave the game. Let me put it this way, being “CC spammed to death” has been much more of an issue since HoT was released.

The breakbar mechanic has made WvW a far less enjoyable experience. I thought it sounded really good at the time, but I didn’t know CC would be doled out with the elite specs (and then they nerfed stability – and lots of WvW players quit the game).

I think the WvW community would all be quite grateful for some (in WvW only) reduction on CC.

Class balance is equally terrible in PvP and WvW.
If you assume that because of some of the changes that were made and affect only PvP,that game mode has better class balance than WvW,you are wrong.
Play some PvP and see for your selves.
If anything,imbalances are somewhat covered up in the large battles that take place in WvW,whereas in PvP they are even more apparent.
Class balance has been steadily degrading in all of the player v player modes.
Even Warhammer online had more balanced classes,and that game had a dev team comprised of 3 janitors 2 hamsters and one hamster wheel.

Man u just made me sad remembering the good ol days of glory of WAR. so much more fun.

Warhammer was great. Especially near the end. What a shame. I saw Fannwong, but where did Gojiberries go?

I’d dearly love to see someone look at this. Please make it happen. Pretty please with chocolate sprinkles and a mountain of Quaggan corpses on top.

I didn’t believe in Stun Breaks either, but just adding one to your skillbar and this particular skill being the only one that is doable while being stunned (at least in my current setup) works wonders since I use it quite frequently now.

Also, as Crinn said, dodge, block, stability.

Stunlock is being knocked down and just being able to watch numbers on your skills, unable to dodge or block or click stability (ironically) because the cooldowns are all permanently up and then you die. That’s Stunlock. It happens all the time in WvW. It’s a nightmare. McLain and Chronacher are obviously not motivated to fix this because I’ve read about management problems on Glassdoor (staff comments) and there’s no carrot OR stick at the company.

The low amount of patches and fixes is indeed a big problem. Anet has to revise their way of thinking about balance completely.

Please can we have a functional combat log that might compare with those that other games had in 2008?

At a mimimum I suggest that it;

  • has LOTS more scrollable text
  • details non-combat effects that hit the player, especially CROWD CONTROL effects

Isn’t it odd that they have funding issues? I wonder if that’s meant in development or real money terms.

If it were real money, I’d be surprised about such a shortage considering the sort of money they throw around.

If it’s down to development “cost” (i.e. man-hours), then I would also be surprised and I suppose they’ve had their staff cut either directly by NCsoft or because of budgetary constraints imposed by NCsoft.

New feature: No new features.

I think there are already far too many features in GW2. I’d like to see those improved and maintained, instead of just ignored and forgotten.

One example: put a “queue as a group” on keg brawl and you have mini-game that could have player-made tournaments galore. Repeatable content that is fun with other players.

… but no. Instead it’s always, “new map, new story, new glider” – all things that players inevitably do on their own in this multiplayer game.
IMO This is how not to do it – and this is why I have so little faith in the management.

Necromancer skills in PVP is poor

All you need to know about Anet with Necros is summed up in the Epidemic hotfix. If they would have internally tested it for 10 minutes, they could have noticed so it just proves they have NOBODY doing any testing.

Wrong! It proves that nobody is doing any Necro testing outside PvE.

I think they sacked all the testers because of leaks.

Rifle Thief: how does it make you feel?

Again SR will not break a Rifle on Thief especially since Any good player can force reveal a Thief in SR with any number of Cc affects or Reveal skills.

It’s telling, in itself, that you feel a need to churn out such a high volume of posts claiming that the thief is actually vulnerable after all. That says everything really.

Like I’d rather be forced to drink molten metal….this is either going to be a completely underpowered elite spec as thief has such high mobility and stealth access, they’ll make the damage kitten poor, or as others have said, a long range killshot that you can’t see coming.

Ugh I’m getting invisible halo sniper flashbacks all over again, only with them you could see an outline at least.

You do realize Thief would have to Give up:

A) Mobility
Or
B) Stealth access

To use the Rifle…..

Why do people think Thieves will be able to use 3 Weapons at once when it comes to the Rifle.

And it’s not like a High Mobility, High stealth access class doesn’t already have 1500+ range weapon…..

Why develop the class if thief has to give up this stuff?

Oh no it’s only one facet of play, and it’s a decision since Thief Stealth and Mobility are only better than others due to weapons, if a Thief wants a range weapon they have to either give up High Stealth access(D/P) or High Mobility(Shortbow).

It’s common sense, but people (bads) always cry foul thinking of Thief with 1200+ range will be broken because of those things combined, but without one of these two weapons thief loses one of those options.

Thief loses its high Mobility without Shortbow.

Thief loses High stealth access without D/P

So Thief Getting a Rifle is not going to break anything.

Remember the goal of Elite Specs are supposed to offer different ways to play the class

But no thief in their right mind would choose to be without those things – so why waste development time on a weapon nobody will choose?

Like I’d rather be forced to drink molten metal….this is either going to be a completely underpowered elite spec as thief has such high mobility and stealth access, they’ll make the damage kitten poor, or as others have said, a long range killshot that you can’t see coming.

Ugh I’m getting invisible halo sniper flashbacks all over again, only with them you could see an outline at least.

You do realize Thief would have to Give up:

A) Mobility
Or
B) Stealth access

To use the Rifle…..

Why do people think Thieves will be able to use 3 Weapons at once when it comes to the Rifle.

And it’s not like a High Mobility, High stealth access class doesn’t already have 1500+ range weapon…..

Perhaps there is a video tutorial for the complex rotations on YOUTUBE that might be helpful to the OP? Heaven knows, Arenanet provide us with nothing in-game.

Perhaps we can collect tokens another way? I’d still like them to be rare but ‘not available at all’ seems rough.

Please fix the 3 Core problems of WvW:


  1. Reduce the direct impact of Server stacking to Match-Ups.
  2. Allow friends & family to play together from many different Worlds.
  3. Allow Off-peak capping, but let players to work out a solution themselves.
    Literally...players should be able to verbally agree in-game with the players from other Servers that are in opposite time zones to attack each other’s night capping enemies. A proposed “Guesting” mechanic described below & tailored for WvW would enable players to do this. It’s a perfect example of players scratching each other’s back to reach an area that they can’t cover themselves.

Server stacking is a topic of it’s own so I’ll pass over it this time.

I don’t recognise #2 or #3 (anymore, really) as problems.

I think guesting in WvW is a cool thing in theory, but bad for WvW because;
Spies. Ye I know we all know people on other servers anyway and they could tell us where they are going etc etc. but this just seems this gives spies sanction to do it legitimately, which will imo exacerbate it as a problem.
I don’t think Tactivator Saboteurs should be so much of a problem if guests were able to be barred from using tactivators.
Also, why won’t your friend transfer?
Also, is this really an issue … at all? Seriously? I’ve never seen this ever.

Regarding Nightcapping, I think we’ve all accepted that the solution we have is the best Arenanet can do and thank them for their efforts. It’s a decent solution and let’s move on.

i.e. Forget what exists and make a new system. That’s how development goes with Guild Wars 2, if you hadn’t noticed.

Development by accretion its a clear philosophy from anet and a poor one. There’s a good extra credits episode on it.

No, I don’t use it. There is no need for the LFG tool in WvW. Sorry.

How many of you PvP people use autotargeting?

I wonder because in WvW it’s not an option because of the guards, walls, doors and mobs.

So when you come to WvW, do you find this an issue at all?

I’d like to use autotargeting because I can’t get a lock on thieves and by the time I use an ability my target has gone.
I don’t think I’m alone in this and would propose a “reacquire target after they leave stealth” UI option if I felt there was an appetite for it.
