I don’t contribute to any wiki anymore. The political hassles just aren’t worth the time.
This is another complaint I hear quite often, although rarely in any detail. Do you mind being a bit more specific (no need to name names, though)?
I’ve worked on Wikipedia, the original Guild Wars (official) wiki, and a few others.
Essentially, the problem was always the same: People with authority, who used that authority to be little dictators. These people care less about format and more about “How dare you!” changes to their precious words.
Technically, I have no problem with format or HTML; I’ve been a high-end computer programmer since the 70s. I have no problem working with others; I’m currently part of a six-man team building a complex software stack for an industry. I’m not saying that to brag, just to point out that I can work with others and handle technology.
My experience with wikis is poor, and with the original Guild Wars 1 (official) wiki even worse. The battles were over trivialities and significance, and often based on opinion, not rules. The point should be to provide accurate & current info, not assuage some poor kitten’s ego.
I’m deep into the lore, though not fanatical. I’d love to contribute to the wiki, especially on corner facts that are important but overlook.
But this is a hobby, not my life. And it ain’t worth the hassle.
Wow. Captain Vanguard, you really are looking for problems with Taimi.
Taimi isn’t there to be taken care of or make a “statement”. She’s just there.
Also, it is not unusual or atypical for the “handicapped” to excel.
I know an young autistic woman very personally who is very autistic but a brilliant mathematician and artist.
Oh, and she plays GW2 brilliantly, beating jumping puzzles with precision and aplomb while slicing and dicing her way thru PvP.
She can’t handle social situations, has trouble reading, and is sometimes a very brittle personality… yet she doesn’t let any of that stop her from working on an advanced math degree.
The world has enough real hurt in it. Please don’t manufacture any.
As a significantly handicapped person —
I totally disagree. Completely. Absolutely. Disagree.
It’s time we stopped treating the disabled as invisible.
It’s time we stopped patronizing the disabled.
Pretending the disabled don’t exist in a “fantasy” setting is ridiculous.
ANet has done a wonderful job of integrating a disabled character into the current story. She is imperfect, sometimes bitter, but fighting back against her disability. She is refreshingly realistic without being preachy. Her presence adds an interesting aspect to “heroes.”
I disagree that these would be better solutions than
simply building up the wiki more! This thread makes it obvious that there are a lot of people in the community who are very passionate about lore, so the question is: why aren’t they editing the wiki?
People who are passionate about lore tend to be very tech-adverse, in my experience, Slapping together a good gaming PC is pretty easy compare to the eccentricities if wiki editing.
I don’t contribute to any wiki anymore. The political hassles just aren’t worth the time.
An addendum from my wife: She just compared jumping games to childbirth. Birthing a kid is incredibly painful and degrading, but the result is worth it.
And yes, she doesn’t like jumping games.
Congratulations, I applaud your accomplishments and your attitude. And thank you for sharing your story, which I hope people here will find encouraging. But did you find it enjoyable?(Dry Top jumps, Zephyrite Ascpects) And would you like to see more of this type of content(jumping and Zephyrite Aspect use) worked into mainstream content in a way that is not optional?
My concern(shared by some others) is that Anet is changing the focus of GW2, and in their desire for it to be a “non-traditional MMO” the game is becoming less and less of an MMO. The concern being, we bought and play it because it’s an MMO, and if it becomes too much of something else, it really is no longer enough of an MMO for us to continue to enjoy.
I’ll admit, I hate the jumping stuff. I didn’t like jumping before I got my arm screwed up.
But now that I’ve done it a couple of times, it’s more annoying than a show-stopper. I can live with it, and even have come around to thinking it does add something to the experience. Real life is pretty kitten ed frustrating; compared to that, a relatively small jumping game is a minor problem.
ANet could make the experience better with a longer timer.
I see no change in focus on the part of ANet. Jumping games have existed since release. They’re nothing new.
What is new is blocking expansion content behind a jumping puzzle. So I have to do something I dislike in order to get to what I like. Annoying? Yes. But they are not insurmountable.
I was really kittened that 100% world exploration requires PvP. But I did the WvW, not because I enjoyed it, but because it was less annoying than giving up on “Been there, done that.”
No game is going to make everyone happy 100% of the time. We just have to decide if the annoyance and frustration is worth the end-goal.
no, that is NOT what we want. We want the content to be optional. The jumps I listed above are all MANDATORY.
People with dyslexia indeed CAN learn to read and write. That does not mean that they enjoy doing it once they’ve learned and most of the time they choose a job where reading and writing is not a core part of the job. Which doesn’t mean that they can’t be highly performing members of the society: My mom’s only mildly dyslexic but she rather enjoys numbers – she’s an accountant. She does not read books, she does not read newspapers… but she does listen to the radio and audiobooks, she watches TV, she talks to people…
seriously, why would people do things they don’t enjoy if there was a way around it? I mean, we all do things we don’t necessarily want to do (such as get up in the morning to go to work) but we do it anyways because the reward we get is worth the trouble. If the trouble gets more annoying than the reward is worth… well then, we find another way. If we can.
I was born a severe dyslexic. My current library contains several thousand books. I read because I was told I couldn’t. I’ve written 18 professionally published (and in some cases, good-selling) books in the last 30 years, in spite of being told I could never write effectively.
Now I’m crippled by an accident, and I still read/write and GAME. I have multiple 80s, a lot of achievements, and 100% map completion. That’s not to brag, it’s to point out that this game, even the jumping games, are very approachable, even for a broken old man like me.
I came into this thread feeling that the jumping puzzles needed a longer timer, and frustrated by the annoying problems I had to start with. I still think a good compromise would be adding 5-10 seconds to the jump timers.
But I’ve beaten the content in Dry Top — all of it — with THREE characters, with my limitations.
I’m beginning to agree with the pro-jumpers here.
This whinarium is hilarious =D
Ain’t that the truth.
So, I guess the question now is the new timeline for the Sylvari and Scarlet canon? Or was that a goof because the wiki didn’t have the citation needed on the subject?
I think the wiki has errors and when it contradicts in-game sources, the game wins.
In theory, the wiki is fan-maintained — while I suspect that ANet employees work on the wiki, it is a side project and secondary to the actual game.
Since they’ve “forgotten” Norn and Charr in the storyline, other than as bit players, I wouldn’t want ANet to dilute things even more with another race.
Lore is not malleable except under extreme circumstances. We are actually quite dedicated to the lore of GW1 and 2. However, situations do arise where we inadvertently or purposefully adjust lore.
I suppose you could find some comfort in how obsessive people in this thread are about the lore…
I played GW1 from it’s origins, and have been in GW2 (minus a few months trying to die last year) since beta began. I have the novels, have read all in-game resources, have 100% world explore, so I think I know GW2 lore pretty well.
I don’t mean to be rude, but most people in this thread are being incredibly nit-picky. I have seen some variance in lore over time. It exists. But I (and others in my social circle) do not find it extremely jarring in most cases. If anything, I think the GW2 lore is better then GW1’s.
Now, that said, I do think GW2 has ignored GW1 lore that was both intriguing and important.
The dragons should have been more than loot pinatas. I’m grateful you’ve returned the focus to a dragon, but am a bit annoyed you added a dragon rather than explore one of the extant ones. The Norn and Charr have been ignored as cultures since release.
I realize you can’t do everything at once, and I’m patient. I enjoyed the latter parts of S1, and think S2 started well.
But why, why, why create all sorts of new lore when great big chunks of old lore languish?
You have an interesting and deep universe to draw from. Build on it, adding richness and depth, rather than creating new lore.
(edited by Sytherek.7689)
Again, another opportunity lost to make the player the hero.
I don’t really care if my necro can build a bone bridge. Or if my mesmer can create portals over remarkably long distances.
I do care that once again, ANet creates a conundrum that can only be solved by super-powered NPCs.
ANet should focus on the player, giving us puzzles that can be solved by skills the player has.
After all, Marjorie and company are going to get mighty lonely without us…
Crystals are direcly in front of the location you need to jump 90% of the time, I don’t know what your problem is with the timers.
As several people have said, some people cannot line up a jump in 15 seconds. Simple as that. They feel rushed, and it’s a stress item.
Personally, I think a 5-second addition to the timer would be very helpful without hurting anyone’s achieves.
For the fourth time, how does lengthening the timer hurt you?
That video has nothing to do with the topic.
We are talking about getting access to the rest of the map, which requires several jumps.
We are not talking about the achievement jumps, which is what that video is about. I never asked for ANY concessions on the achievement. Which I have, BTW.
AGAIN: I am only asking for a bit of assistance getting to the rest of the zone where most of the content is. Content — missions, events, chest — are currently blocked for people who can’t jump.
A longer timer diminishes no one’s achievements.
If you can’t do simple jumps then maybe you shouldn’t be playing this game…
Over-react much? Seriously, why would you be offended by a 5 second increase in the duration of the gems? It wouldn’t affect you at all.
I think the duration is balanced with a few puzzles in there, would it be longer – the puzzle would be considerably easier for “most” players.
While I disagree about that horrible statement that handicapped people shouldn’t play games, I can’t see why developers should balance a game with them in mind. The personal story / living story missions last year were heavily critizised for being boring, not interesting enough, bland,… by a few people. Now Anet brought new gameplay-mechanics into the story, and I must say this is by far the best story-mission release I’ve seen in the game.
So I can’t say I wouldn’t mind if jumping stuff is optional only. No. I love the new mechanics in the missions. It just feels natural that you have to traverse the terrain in that way during the story mission when you do so in the same terrain out of the mission in the zone.
Lets say: the percentage of handicapped players is 2% of the playerbase. Now think of it, what if the 2% of the best players want the game to be designed “brutal hardcore” for them, because it feels just boring for them. These players don’t have that content in the game currently, so they “have a right” to get something, while there is tons of easymode content for the bottom 2% already.
Wow.
Exactly where did I ask for changes specifically because I am handicapped?
I didn’t. In fact, I pointed out that I beat the content as is.
Did I enjoy the jumping? No.
Have non-handicapped folk had problems? Yes, many.
How would lengthening the timers hurt ANYONE?
Good grief.
Excellent suggestions.
If you stand next to the crystal after grabbing it, it will reappear for you after the timer goes out. There’s no need to give it a longer time if you’re trying to reach the end of the LS chapter because for every time it requires you to use a crystal, you need the Lightning Aspect for 1 jump, the Light Aspect for 1 dash, and the Wind Aspect for 2 jumps, which are right next to each other (almost on top of each other). If you STILL need a duration increase on that, then I’m sorry, you probably shouldn’t be playing this game since 15 seconds is more than enough time.
Again, I ask: How does lengthening the timer harm anything?
<sigh>
So, no answer then?
There is no answer because your question is invalid.
In my experience as a world completer and story completer, only one possible path of one aspect of the game (the jumping puzzle in the personal storyline) is blocked by a jumping puzzle.
ALL of the new Dry Top release is blocked by a jumping puzzle.
The difficulty of the jumping puzzle in Dry Top can be easily fixed by extending or eliminating the timers.
Dude, how is all of it blocked by a Jumping Puzzle? You use the Light aspect to get through the little sandfall at the beginning of Dry Top. You use the Lightning Aspect to launch yourself to the Wind Aspect. You use the Wind/Lightning Aspect to launch yourself to the cliff. You grab another Wind Aspect and you use it to be launched up twice to continue. There is no real jumping at all involved.
Even the instance that requires you to go up higher has Kasmeer making portals for you so you don’t even need to really jump. The instance after that STILL has her making portals, and the path to that instance requires use of 2 Wind Aspect crystals, of which only ONE is a gap, and a rather small one at that. How are you guys having any problems getting to this at all, and why do you want it to be spoonfed to you?
It is blocked by the timers on the jump crystals.
15 seconds is not long enough for some who lacks quick spatial skills or manual dexterity. My problem is the later. It often takes me more than 15 seconds to locate my target and to move my hand between controls. Remapping the keyboard did help a bit.
Significantly lengthen the timers, and my objection goes away. Longer timers in no way harm anyone while making the game more reasonable for others.
How is the game harmed by lengthening the jump timer?

You mean just like ALL of Cutthroat Politics was blocked by even worse jumping puzzles? How could it was okay back then, but now it is suddenly the worse thing ever?
I was trying to die when Cutthroat politics came out, as I have repeated. Had I been playing, I probably would have complained about it.
Games shouldn’t be played by handicaps unless they can figure a work around to play them. But games like gw2 also shouldnt revolve around them either.
I do not, nor have I ever asked ANet to alter gameplay or mechanics to suit my limited abilities, and I have completed the content as delivered.
I have not seen any handicapped person ask for special privileges.
<sigh>

On Buddhism and gaming, since it arose in this thread.
I am a practicing Buddhist, have been for a long time. It has minimal influence on my enjoyment of entertainment. Nor does Buddhism prevent violence. Buddhism is about knowing who you are and understanding your motivations.
Like other philosophical systems, Buddhism has variations. If you go back to its core, Buddhism is not a religion. It is a road-map for thinking.
Thus it is not incompatible with gaming or Guild Wars.
BTW, I love the Buddha-bears and their psuedo-zen koans. Wonderful. Can I play one someday, ANet?

re: So I guess even a one-handed cripple can beat that jumping “puzzle”/so much to that, weren’t we saying that all along? – He said that to encourage others, not to make our point invalid.(which it doesn’t) And he states that he still doesn’t like non-optional jumping content. You neglected to include that part in your quote.(quoted below for accuracy)
So I guess even a one-handed cripple can beat that jumping puzzle. It still doesn’t make me LIKE jumping games that aren’t optional.
Exactly. I may be able to do jumping puzzles as found in Dry Top, with one off-hand on a keyboard. I’ve actually been trying to get those kitten rubbery right-hand fingers to help me on the jumps.
Can I do them? Yes.
Do I like them? Absolutely, positively, beyond a doubt, NO. I hated jumping puzzles before I damaged my neck.
The ability to do a thing does not imply liking that thing.
ANet cannot cater to everyone’s tastes all of the time, or then end up making a boring game. However, they should not gate content behind a single flawed mechanic. Put an end to the crystal-boost timers, and 90% of my gripe would be gone, since I’d have extra time to size-up my jumps. I’s still hate jumping, but it wouldn’t be as much of a barrier.
HOWEVER, I just did an experiment. I just took my second character into Dry Top. Got thru the initial jumping puzzle in five minutes. Surprised the heck out of me.
So I guess even a one-handed cripple can beat that jumping “puzzle”.
so much to that, weren’t we saying that all along?
Just because I can do it doesn’t mean that I like doing it. Just because something is possible doesn’t mean it was fun.
How did you complete the Personal Story especially if you went with Priory?
I beat the puzzle with much cussing on my main. Not fun.
I have a level 42 asura whose stuck on it right now. I may not finish the personal story with him.
Well most people that complain here have constantly stated that before this release it was always optional and did not hinder progression of the story, which is rather clearly totally false.
I found jumping puzzles irritating in the personal story, especially the one in Lornar’s Pass where you have to balance-jump while avoiding cross wind. Beat it, hated it.
HOWEVER, I just did an experiment. I just took my second character into Dry Top. Got thru the initial jumping puzzle in five minutes. Surprised the heck out of me.

People seem to use the arguments about this locking access to the Living Story, which it didn’t before.
Didn’t you play at Cutthroat Politics? That was very much part of the Living Story and it required you to get to the very top of the Sanctum. How come that wasn’t a problem (it actually required way more jumping and “skill” than the new map).
I was in a hospital during Cutthroat politics, so I didn’t play it. Had I been able to play, I would have strongly objected to any mandatory jumping puzzles.
So you’re telling me that you have a problem with the jumping parts but no problem with the quite challenging battle parts?
I did not even get to the battle parts in the new zone, as the aspects mostly ran out of time before I could position my char and press a button.
As for general gameplay: I main a LB ranger due to my “limitations”. This allows me to mostly keep my char at one spot, so I can press buttons for attacks. And as I said before somewhere: I’ll doubletab forward for a Healing Spring rather easy.
There’s a difference between general gameplay and (forced upon) jumping on small ledges, or bamboo – as some experienced jumpers have complained about.
The above is also intended for Xenon.4537, about the disparity and other stuff s/ he wrote.
I’m suggesting they are completely able to do it, they are just unwilling due to laziness and/or personal feelings.
You do know what they say about people and their opinions? I do actually try beating my “limitations”. Even in the open world, regularly jumping on/ off rocks and stuff. Do not call me lazy and/ or unwilling, thank you.
@Ashen.2907
I wouldn’t mind seeing the data to support the, “most,” and, “quite a lot.”
Based upon the reactions from players on this very forum here, which you maybe have read also, in the topics about the whole jumping stuff. I do not speak for others.
@Hka.3942
Thank you for your kind offer! Both you and Lio (and others!) are totally awesome for offering help!
Okay, another handicapped person here. My right hand is paralyzed, and it was my primary, so I’m forced to play off-hand only. Yes, I play Guild Wars 2 with my left hand ONLY. I use a touchpad (external Logitech) and keyboard on a very good i7 PC.
I have bucket loads of achievements (I honestly don’t care to chase’m all), have 100% map completion on my main, and 3 level 80s. 95% or my 2500 hours have been played without my right hand.
I despised jumping puzzles since before my injury. I want to play an MMO, not a platformer.
So… I strongly dislike the required jumping puzzles in the new zone. They were a major frustration, it took me six hours to get past them at the start point.
If ANet shoves jumping puzzles down my throat again, locking major content behind them, I may find another game.
My only gripe with the expansion is the REQUIREMENT for jumping initially. I hate jumping puzzles so much, I almost gave up on this new Zone and even considered dumping GW2 all together.
Again, I absolutely hate obligatory jumping games. Optional platforming is fine and good; shoving it down my throat like this sucks.
Other than the jumping, I loved this new material.
I’m very happy with the new content, so happy that I did almost all of it first evening, like sitting down with a new book and not noticing the hours passing.
My only gripe is that the story ran out, and that’s just a matter of me doing it all in one stretch. ANet can’t design content that lasts forever and is reasonable for non-obsessives like me. My wife probably will need a couple weeks to finish.
Story, good. Missions, good but not excellent. I did the whole thing with no cheats, but didn’t find it challenging. The use of Zephyrite jumping puzzles was annoying because I hate jumping puzzles. But that’s a matter of taste, and I got thru them. Screwed up the dive, probably won’t try it again.
Best update yet, and a good omen for the games future.
7 characters
3 level 80s
1 world completion
Saw it. Bought it.
Here it is on my male human elementalist. I love the dragon over the shoulder.
I mainly bought it for my dragon-themed female human mesmer. It reminds me of the 15k armor I have on my GW1 mesmer. Perfect, in my opinion.
i don’t see any problems with dailies – unless you hate pvp and eotm karma train
I hate having my options limited. The new dailies give me fewer options, and yes, I don’t play PvP. I’m a one-handed person, a former righty forced to be a lefty. It simply isn’t fun to play PvP with one off-hand.
Pre-patch, I did the daily almost every day. Now I rarely even try it.
I’m new on this forum, so dont flame on me if this topic was already created.
I’m a casual gamer, so in the week i play around 1-2h/day, in the weekends a little more. Before the megaserver update, dragonite was already harder to get then empyreal fragments en bloodstone dust.
But it simply became a pain to gather now, i’m camping temple maps in the hope one activates, and using the boss timer for world bosses. But earning 10-20 dragonite in an hour aint fun anymore. I wanna start crafting asc armor, but i dont wanna camp boss locations for 15 min, then kill it, and wait again for one to spawn…Whats the best way to gain dragonite now? Ankittenhe only one that thinks this way?
What’s “hard to get” is based on playstyle. You find it hard to get Dragonite — I’m swimming in it, but always short on Empyreal fragments.
I wish Anet would provide Magic Forge recipes to do conversions on ascended mats.
Given the overwhelming lack of response, I assume the answer is “no devs play Ranger main.”
Just curious. I hear them talk about Warrior and Mesmer and Thief and Engineer, but I have yet to see one well-known (or even obscure) dev say they main a Ranger.
Note that I main Ranger and enjoy the class. Mostly, I’m just curious.
GW1 doesn’t have out of place, pet characters like GW2.
Do your rose-colored glasses let you see someone called “Mhenlo”, or someone named “Kormir?”
GW1 was filled with NPCs who were more important than the player characters. Good lord, how I wish I could have killed Mhenlo or his girl-friend Cynn.
At least in GW2, we got to stomp the annoying Scarlet.
Just ridiculous that the keep doesn’t have free access to all services!!! I am never buying a pass. The Air Ship needs to crash and burn and give us back the one stop forge/crafting etc. And if they don’t want to do that-put a mystic forge in all home cities.
I can’t see very many buying those tickets unless they have more money/gold/gems than they know what to do with.
Don’t the racial cities have all services?
The only thing missing from places like Hoelbruk and Rata Sum is a Mystic Forge.
And these days, the racial cities are fairly busy.
On April 15, we get a feature patch. Later, we get a content patch. I’d guess that if ANet does add Tengu, it will be in the content patch later this year.
Adding a new race would be a major effort by ANet, but it might generate a lot of goodwill with Cantha-lovers. I wouldn’t bet on Tengu coming in, but I wouldn’t bet against it either.
I love how after hundreds of posts saying that the players hate this proposed change (let’s be real at this point after the money they have spent on it, it is pretty much a done deal) the devs aren’t responding anymore.
This is a smaller thread than many “reaction” threads.
Some of us are concern about ramifications, but not opposed to the general concept of Megaservers. They are good for some of us, believe it or not. I am also concerned that Megaservers are bad for some.
The gloom-and-doomers exist in every forum on every topic, artificially magnifying their significance.
The game is not dying, or the money people would not expend funds to change and expand the game.
The whole point of this update is to “Facilitate FRIENDLY play” People won’t learn how to fight the boss if they are considered “dead weight” and trolled and no one helps them. Remember you too were once a noob, and needed people to help you.
You make a good point. Too bad most people are more worried about their own efficiency. I would rather have fun and lose than spend time insulting someone for being a “n00b”.
My only concern with the new system is working people who will be excluded because of the rigid schedule. Since my job is remarkably flexible, I’ll be able to hit my favorite bosses, maybe with ease. But others are not so fortunate.
ANet should consider who butters their bread — people with jobs who can spend money at the trading post. The very same people who may be locked out of certain bosses by this schedule.
This schedule change is very hostile to the people who keep your game funded.
Also, the problem with Tequatl is the lack of scaling, not scheduling.
(edited by Sytherek.7689)
I’m a player who like doing the event bosses, and I don’t like the “scheduled” bosses coming on 15 April.
To begin with, my ability to play is rather random, and now I’ll have to “schedule” when I fight a specific boss. I may not be able to fight bosses I enjoy.
Second, the bosses will become even more clockwork and boring. I like a little randomness in my world.
I am not in favor of this change.
I’m not looking for bunnies and sunshine, but I am sick of the “dark” cliche. Everything fictional is being “dark” these days — BORING.
Drama, yes. Tension, yes. Struggle, yes.
“Dark” — yawn.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
I don’t care if ANet adds dueling, so long as it does not impinge on my gameplay. I don’t want to deal with hyperactive teenagers who chase me all over the map issuing challenges as a form of griefing.
At the very least, make dueling an opt-in with a “Willing/unwilling to duel” switch in settings.
I have no problem if people want to duel, as long as I can ignore them.
I find some aspects of the “services” at Vigil keep mildly annoying. Notice I said “mildly”. Yes, it would be nicer to have crafting stations.
However, the folk who complain they need to spend an addition minut or two hopping zones (to get to crafting stations in home cities) mystify me. They spend oodles of time posting forum messages, yet they could have SAVED time by not posting over-and-over, and just use their favorite home city.
I’ve always used Hoelbrak or Rata Sum as my hub, and never felt any need to use LA. Sure, the Vigil keep isn’t as complete as LA. So what? There are five other cities. If no one buys passes (I suspect many people will, however), won’t ANet get the message?
I’m not buying a pass. Waste of money. Never “needed” LA in the first place. Others may think differently.
Concerned about Captain's airship passes.
in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

You can have the EXACT same experience that you had in LA in any of the Racial capitals. The have the exact same services – often more central to one another – and load quicker than LA. The only thing they do not have is the Mystic Toilet. But how often do you need to use that?
I’ve always used Hoelbrak. I don’t use the mystic toilet much, and everything else is laid out fairly nice. I always found LA noisy and laggy.
I do understand there being some annoyance with the fall of LA, and it does look like ANet is being a tad greedy with no crafting stations at the Vigil. But the game is quite playable; if no one buys the airship pass, then ANet will have learned its lesson.
My norn ranger has her lizard pets. That’s all the companionship she needs.
Seriously, “romances” would just be pets for everyone.
