To get a gold level 80 complete Mad Memories you must :
- Complete Phase 1 of the Scavenger Hunt
- Complete Phase 2 of the Scavenger Hunt
- Complete your Personal Story up to the point you get a level 80 back item reward
- Acquire a Fine Transmutation Stone
- Transmute the Look of the Mad Memories onto your level 80 back item.
Except that the story line gives you a masterwork back item, not a rare back item.
We had ~40 people from my guild all on one overflow spread all throughout the plaza, and every single one of us saw the mad king blow up through the fountain. Not sure what caused some people to not see him, but it seems fairly isolated.
Heavy armor: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pit_Fighter_Armor
Medium armor: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Duelist_armor
Light armor: I can’t find this on the wiki… It looks exactly like the level 80 crafted exotic armor “Acolyte’s”.
Fine transmutation stone.
You mean the very last jump, where the face explodes and you have to jump through? That’s the part that isn’t working? Are you experiencing any lag in game?
Thank you. Carry on.
I will say that the fight is really fun done as intended, i assume it is easy because they had to account for non-true-80’s being in there.
HOWEVER the most FUN part comes in when you realize there is no armor penalties for dying and you run it with your guildmates and try to fear them off the ledges with well timed scarecrow kills….AMAZINGLY FUN. The funniest one is on the first jump down when the mad king ported to there and dropped a scarecrow, i timed the scarecrow kill right as a guildie jumped to the platform and he got feared right back off…..lol.
This is what most of my guild runs end up with. Especially if we can get him to stay on the bottom platform.
Also, you can jump onto the chest from the waypoint. Just go around the ledge behind the exit door to the left and leap of faith it. I usually scream “SOMEBODY CATCH ME!” right before hopping off. Bonus points if you manage to loot the chest before splattering (spam that F).
Now do it facing backwards.
Notice that nowhere in the definition did it say that gamemasters have in-depth knowledge of internal game mechanics that are kept hidden from the general public.
Hopefully the character bound part is a bug and it was meant to be account bound.
I read all of this, and I’m not sure what the point of this post is. You wanted to clue us peons in to your sudden enlightenment?
You’re not going to get any of those questions answered by a GM. Also, I don’t think you know what a GM is.
1 – No.
2 – No.
3 – Yes.
4 – Yes.
I have a feeling it will be “Under Construction” during the Act 4 party, and once Act 4 is over the statue will be back to normal.
Robert HroudaThat of course could be tweaked by number balancing and a few skill adjustments.
His teleporting between levels and inclusion of jump puzzle elements, his bouncing around the battlefield to keep things from getting too static...
He’s not hard enough for my tastes though, but he wasn’t meant to be. He’s a fun fight though, and all props to the team of folks who worked on him.
Yes, exactly! Compared to just fighting “Large Ghostling A” or “Asura with a couple engineer skills” he really feels like an epic encounter.
Do the skins even drop from the mad king’s chest I know the exotics can but have an exceptionally low drop rate, but if the skins could I’d be expecting to see the price drop;
Yes, but they are incredibly rare. I’ve gotten 4 exotics but never seen a single skin.
How much is the ghastly grinning shield going for atm?

23-24 gold.
Haunted door – Found in human lands when zone wide quest is completed. Shows on mini map as a jack o lantern. Grants access to mad realm.
Mad Realm – Grants access to Reaper’s Rumble, Lunatic Inquisition, Clocktower, and Labyrinth.
Reaper’s Rumble – A DOTA style game, make skeletons spawn on your side, destroy the skeleton spawners on the other side.
Lunatic Inquisition – Monsters and Villagers style game. If a monster catches a villager the villager becomes a monster. Game ends after 13 minutes or if all villagers are turned into monsters.
Clock Tower Puzzle – A jumping puzzle that takes a few minutes to complete if you don’t fall. It’s timed and a large portion of the community can’t complete it.
Labyrinth – A mini dungeon with events and candy corn to mine. 2 large boss events that each spawn a chest once they’re defeated.
Ascent to Madness – An instanced dungeon encounter where 5 players face off against the Mad King himself. Rewards a large chest at the end.
Not only is the chest not affected by DR, the halloween mobs and the mad king himself aren’t affected by DR. I ran the dungeon 26 times in a row yesterday with the only break being when the server died. I got 3 of my exotics between runs 20-24 and the only rare I ever got was off the Mad King himself on run 25. Every run I walk away with 4-10 trick or treat bags from the door mobs in the beginning.
nachtnebel.9168Well, most in my friends think that the Mad King is way too easy and quite boring cause all you have to do is avoid those pumpkins (scarecrows are not that dangerous and die easily). We think that more encounters should be like Lupi. And which one shot attacks are you talking about? Nothing he has really does damage. Also, expect for the "The Mad King says … " part the whole encounter is rather static, you don’t even have to move much.
As I said in my last paragraph, yes, the encounter is easy, it was meant to be able to be completed by a group of level 2s. If you roll in there with 5 level 80s you can do it in 10 minutes or less. But that’s purely a numbers thing. The Mad King’s auto attacks hit me for less than the plastic spiders hit me for, he was intentionally toned down.
Malediktus.9250I dont know how he can 1 shot you? I didnt move out of anywhere when I soloed him and never got even close to dieing.
The scarecrows fear you once they die. If you’re in a bad position and get feared, off the edge you go. That’s why I said it can be totally mitigated by good teamwork and good positioning. Either you don’t kill the scarecrows and you don’t get feared, or you position yourself so that when you do get feared you don’t run off the edge.
Get a job, buy gems, sell gems for gold, buy skin using gold.
The chance of getting that particular skin from a Black Lion Chest is incredibly low. Low as in you could open HUNDREDS of chests and not get that particular skin. You might get other skins that you could sell, but in the end it’s a gamble, a game of chance, and just like any gambling, the house always wins.
Let’s look at the numbers.
Level an alt to 10 for a free black lion chest key. This takes around 30 minutes to do if you know what you’re doing and you have support from other people doing it with you. Black Lion Keys can be bought from the TP for 450 gems for 5 keys, 800 gems = $10, so 1 Key is worth ~$1.12. Doing this equates to spending an hour of time for $2.25 worth of game items. You’re basically playing the game, and grinding something “unfun” at the rate of $2.25 per hour.
Mad King’s Ascent. This takes around 10 minutes per run with a good group. More likely to average out to around 15 minutes when you include starting/stopping emptying inventory, and everything else. So ~4 runs per hour. I haven’t seen any sort of hard numbers on the drop rates in here, but from personal experience it seems like you get 1 random exotic every 10 runs. Because of the huge range of exotics you can get, exotics average out to around 1 gold each. You get other loot as well, let’s say 10 silver worth per run. So, in 2 1/2 hours you would, on average, get 2 gold worth of loot. 2 gold is currently worth ~$4 using gold<->gems conversion rate on the trading post. So now you’re working for ~$2/hour. Here you’re doing something that’s more fun than low level alt grinding, but you’re making less per hour.
Farm Orr. With a good group and a good rotation Orr can net you 3 gold per hour. Using the above Gem<->Gold conversion rate 3 gold is worth a little less than $6. So farming Orr is $6/hour, but you’re also gaining karma that can be used for other things. Fun level is arguable, I have a lot of fun doing Orr for a few hours with guildees, but that drops off quickly after doing it for a while.
Work a minimum wage job. Current US minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Doing a Gem<->Gold conversion, this is around 3.5g per hour. Most likely this is the least fun option out of all of them.
So, if we consider that the price of the Greatsaw skin has adjusted to its real market price (Currently 42g or $84):
Alt Farming: 37 hours 20 minutes
Mad King Farming: 41 hours
Orr Farming: 14 hours
Minimum wage job: 11 hours 35 minutes

I don’t mean exactly like Mad King Thorn, I mean in the sense that this encounter perfectly meshes GW2 gameplay mechanics with the feelings of an epic encounter.
My guild members, a couple hundred people, are all in agreement: the Mad King Thorn fight is the best dungeon encounter we’ve ever experienced in any game.
The encounter is the perfect balance of gameplay mechanics. First, he has large, well telegraphed attacks that can 1 shot you, but can be avoided/mitigated by good group coordination and situational awareness (Scarecrows fearing you off the edge of the island).
Second, he has unique attacks not seen elsewhere (Spawning exploding pumpkins, creating scarecrows.).
Third, he has a very memorable arena that his fight takes place in (Giant floating islands.).
Fourth, immersion! The Mad King yells at you during the fight, he breaks out cackling occasionally, he fits perfectly into his surrounding and really looks like the ruler of his realm. The only thing that possibly could have made this better would be if he told a corny joke right before one of his big attacks (Feel free to use this next time, you’re welcome).
Finally, the encounter starts off with a perfect example of gameplay that requires attention, can be completed by the average player, punishes you for mistakes, and gets easier with repitition (Mad King Says… At least it would be when it’s not bugged and nobody has to actually do the skills. Also, it should be random, not Cower – Salute – Dance every time.).
Having said all of that, the Mad King is incredibly simple for anyone to kill. That’s to be expected, he was designed to be completed by people as low as level 2, and there are people reporting that they’ve soloed him. But with a few tweaks to his damage numbers, and removing a couple of the fences/rocks in the zone would ramp his difficulty up to end-game levels, so I’m ignoring how difficult the fight itself is.
Dungeon team – Please get in contact with holiday event team!
2200 candy corn is virtually nothing unfortunately, enough to craft half of the mats for a single weapon. Crafting The Crossing for example requires 20 Superior sigils of the night, which take 200 candy corn each.
Incorrect. Superior Sigil of the Night takes 100 candy corn each, so 2000 candy corn is enough for all 20 sigils.
Group size in the instance is a technical limitation. The jumping puzzle designer said he wanted to make it a solo instance, but had to settle for 10-15 person overflow isntancing.
Disagree with the easy/hard mode. The entire point of this addition was to add challenging content that only a percentage of the userbase could complete. I’ll probably never be able to afford a legendary, but every single one of my characters has an exotic pair of Mad King Slippers.
Looks like it really will only be for a day:
Be prepared for an epic adventure in four acts starting October 22 and running until October 31.
From here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/october-2012-release-highlights/
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that Act 4 would last until Nov 2nd (Friday), but now I can’t find that anywhere.
Both chests in the labyrinth? Where’s the second one (other than the main one in the middle from the family sized candy corn)?
Also, you can’t use level 80 upgrades that require the item to be level 80.
This is why you’re getting that error OP.
The event that is going to occur at noon on Sunday will be a 1 time thing. Either you’re there to see it, or you have to go watch a replay on youTube.
What is this event going to be? I have an educated guess. The fountain in Lion’s Arch will burst open and a portal to the Mad King’s Realm will open.
That’s all that’s going to happen. I’m sure it’s going to look cool, but there won’t be any achievements, any epic loot raining from the sky, none of that nonsense.
The reason ANet won’t repeat it or stagger it across servers? It’s a portal to another zone. Imagine how inconvenient it would be to try and do actual Halloween content if the portal you need to go through is only up for 5 minutes every hour, because the rest of the time it’s sealed/blocked off because the animation is playing through.
Same logic follows for staggering it. How fair would it be for your home world if you wanted to do the Mad King’s Realm but your server isn’t slated to have the portal open for another 8 hours, meanwhile all the other worlds are in there and having fun.
This is what people are complaining about that they’re going to miss. A portal opening up. If you really want to see it open, watch it on youTube from someone that has a $10k rig and all graphics settings on maximum. I’ll likely barely be able to watch it on my potato in the first place.
Also, please post lots of pictures for those of us not in game. Thanks
I also don’t get why a one time only event. I mean really not everyone can be there for such a thing. And after all this has been a highly negatively seen thing in other MMOs that have done them or built their game design on having them through out the game and oh well if you weren’t there sucks to be you. That really is not a good attitude and stance to take. And by having a one time only event, even if arenanet doesn’t say the words, they indeed say it sucks to be you if you missed it by having it. And that was the reason why in GW1 the mad king repeated every x hours so everyone could be a part of the special event within the event. Why is this not being done for this particular thing within this event?
Chill out. It’s going to be an animation of a portal opening. If they repeated the event constantly, the portal would be unaccessable half the time, which means players would miss out on actual content and not just watching an animation happen.
This guy probably lives in the same timezone as mine, it’s also happening at 3am on Monday here. I’m from the Philippines, and we have a decent amount of player base in our server at least (Isles of Janthir). Unlike him though, I’m not complaining. Just clarifying on the timezone issue.
No, he specifically said 3am EST. Which means he lives on the eastern coast of North or South America and he can’t tell time.
Just wanted to let AN know that they have lost a player due to stating the “one time” holiday event @ 3:00am est. For such a progressive MMO to make such a horribly unprogressive move is crazy to me.
Then they say to “go watch it on youtube or livestream?”,really? Sorry,no. I’ll go play MMOs that make things accessible to people in other time zones then.
Hope you guys realize what you have done,it seems like a bad path to start down on.
Wow…. There is so much wrong with this post I hope you don’t mean it seriously.
So its 200 per sigil and not 100?
So essentially 8000 candy corn to make 2 weapons?
Sorry, you’re right it’s 100 candy corn per sigil. I’ll edit my post.
Can you please confirm that ill need 4000 candy corn in order to craft 2 superior sigils of the night to make both the bow AND staff weapons? Just so I can start gathering more if necessary haha.
Each superior sigil takes 100 candy corn. Each weapon takes 20 sigils.

Again, based on the sheer number of skins and minis that I’ve seen running around, it seems like people in here are projecting. A lot.
If you’re not happy, fine, don’t give them any more money. But there’s a lot of people that are happy, and will continue to give them money.
Gem -> Gold conversion.
Now you can buy any skin you want for gems.
You’re welcome.
Hmmm. At an exchange rate of $20 cash = 1600 gems = roughly 12 gold? No thanks.
Besides, again, the point of the OP was feedback to Anet about how they could make more revenue and create good will instead of bad will.
Ohhh ok. So you people are whining that you want things for cheaper. I could have sworn this was a thread about not being able to use RMT to buy in game things. Oh wait, it is.
Sorry, no. Here: I’ll put it in the simplest terms possible for you:
Anet would have gotten $50 out of me if they’d charged a straight, reasonable price of $10 per skin.
Anet will not see a single cent from me. Especially not to buy gems to convert to gold to pay jacked up AH prices. Because ultimately, the price this way is too high.
So: they could have gotten $50 from me easily. Instead they get $0 from me. I am not alone. Do the math. Are there more people like me who will pay nothing at all if they can’t pay a reasonable price? Or are there enough people who will pay a more exorbitant price SUCH THAT they make up for all the people like me?
My bet is is that the people who will buy enough gems to pay 50+ gold on the AH for items, plus the people who will spend lots of cash for keys for the slot machine, do not in sum total outweigh the people like me.
It’s that simple.
Ok, so you think the skins should only be worth 5 gold each (~$10 converted to gems). Sounds like you have a problem with there being a free market in the game. The suggestion forum is over here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions
Try telling them that you want everything available at a fixed price.
Gem -> Gold conversion.

Sol, great breakdown. I’m really happy to see someone finally post one of these guides using the correct resources instead of the 250 orichalcum weapon parts that was circulating around.
Gem → Gold conversion.
Now you can buy any skin you want for gems.
You’re welcome.
Mad Queen Malafide.7512Why make it so exclusive to rich players?
Because players want status symbols. They want to have the option to wear 20 gold worth of rare dyes while flashing around their 1,000g legendary. This mini is just one more way to do that.
I just noticed that collecting minis is pay to win guys.
I am really, really hoping that this first holiday event has just been a trial and error experiment with regard to the cash-shop and what players will and won’t be receptive to.
I know Anet emps play the game. And I don’t see how any of them would ever think buying the same 3/4 of a set twice and throwing one of them away to get the final 1/4 would be enjoyable.
Minis really don’t do a thing. They are just a fun little collectible. Just about everyone buying them is doing so with collecting or re-selling in mind. So was there an absolute necessity to put a little caveat in there to weasel more money out of players that like to collect them?
No doubt the gimmick made a little bit of money. Not as much as some other things as I’ve only seen pretty few of them in LA server proper and overflows. And it just looks bad on the gem store.
Customer perception is everything in sales. So I think whoever is running the shop should take a look at how things like this will be received and how that could hurt future sales instead of what twists they can throw in there to make a few bucks right this minute. If that mini was put up for sale individually from the pack as a “limited time GW2 inaugural Halloween event miniature”, and made gold or orange while dropping the pack minis rarity one level below it…it would have sold like hot-cakes and not been another blemish on the gem-shops record.
*All this is taking in to account the only way to get all four actually does end up being buying a pack, forging a pack, then rebuying the same thing again. Doesn’t matter that you may be able to get it on TP. If someone still had to go through that process it still feels dirty.
Based on the sheer number of chainsaw minis I’ve seen running around in LA, I think that you are going to be the one disappointed next holiday.
you mean 3 hours and 15 minutes from now right?
Yes, 3 hours and 14 minutes from now is noon pacific time.
Well, I deleted my first post, but I guess that doesn’t delete the thread. Thanks for fixing it though.
I’m guessing here, as I’m not going to actually throw my costume in there, but putting a full set of other town clothes in there gets you a random level 1-5 piece of white armor.
So, I’d advise against doing it.
There was a dev post here in this forum yesterday answering this. Yes, you will be able to complete previous stages of the event all the way up until it’s all turned off.
Sieg.8439I can’t seem to find the recipe for The Crossing… Do you have a link for its recipe?
Like I said, they’re all on the wiki:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gift_of_The_Moon
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gift_of_Souls <- The Crossing
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gift_of_Spiders
I was going to create pages for the exotics themselves (The Crossing, The Mad Moon, Arachnophobia), but the wiki is in read only mode during maintenance.
You can still craft one, some players might tell you that it requires ridiculous amount of time and grind to do so, but that’s just their opinion. Total price of crafting the permament version of this wonderfull shield is approximately 150g
It does require ridiculous amount of time and grind. Unless you’re extremely lucky, somehow made alot on the TP (lucky again), or were in with the exploits. (or are rich enough to just keep converting gems to gold)
Getting 150g, for even a normal player will take along time.Heres a list of all the items (in total) needed to make the permanent one:
538 Orichalcum Ore
250 Candy Corn
100 Corrupted Lodestones
100 Chattering Skulls
40 Elonian Wine
30 Ancient Wood Logs
25 Globs of Ecto
10 Crystalline Dust
5 Fine Crafting
1 Gift of Thorns (500 TA Tokens)
Don’t know why people are still posting the incorrect recipe. I updated the wiki yesterday with the correct information.
(The one I quoted is incorrect)
“Golf clap” to the folks that thing anyone with the skins done something to earn them. I would gladly get 4 people and clear a hardcore dungeon to get these skins than waste my time buying keys for overpriced sums of money and then not even getting jack from the chests.
People are still pissed because they didnt fix the problem they just shifted it to another box to make it seem like its still not as much of a gamble.
Either let us buy it or have them as rewards from a boss ect.
Uhm, you can buy it. Have you done any research at all?
Crafting one of the Halloween exotics is 2000 candy corn excluding the amount you need to create the recipe. Keep that in mind.
