There we go here is some official forum cancer…

I was by no means outraged-

I feel you. I read this quote earlier today:

I definitely think this is the absolute worst choice in a pvp conquest scenario. I don’t play conquest, but-

I haven’t given it much thought, but-

Same post. Two paragraphs. These forums!

But anyway, I think Rev as a whole needs to be looked at before Anet starts nerfing things, as someone else previously stated. 50% damage on your next skill after a mitigated one, for example, should be considered with CoR—as well as all the other damage modifiers. And then decide what really does and doesn’t need changes, because a lot of things go into Revenant’s CoR destruction!

clone replacing third phantasm

in Mesmer

Posted by: ToaLux.6478

ToaLux.6478

It has to do with skill use expectations remaining intuitive. The old method was that clone or phantasm if you had three summoning either destroyed the oldest clone or Phantasm. Even in that method using a skill that created an Illusion always generated that illusion (assuming the skill didn’t miss – but that’s another intuitive mechanic).

The quality of life change that was made maintained this intuitiveness. They changed it so that a clone will be replaced before a Phantasm is replaced – if there are no clones then the oldest Phantasm gets replaced. This is still rather intuitive and maintains expectations since what is occurring is rather passive (the game deciding what to replace). It may not be ideal if you want to use Mirror Blade but it maintains the intuitive expectations of the player.

Changing it so that Clone skills stop working when you have three Phantasms up is not intuitive to players. When you meet all of the conditions outlined for a skill and use iLeap or Decoy then you should produce an illusion. Adding an additional “won’t work if you have three Phantasms” tool-tip to each Clone skill becomes convoluted and less intuitive to players.

Either way you slice it you would end up with players debating either side – the side that wins will be the one who maintains the approach-ability and intuitiveness of the profession – not the one that wants to ignore the Shatter mechanic and increase their Passive DPS. Odds are if you have three Phantasms up then you likely have at least one Phantasm skill off CD or very close anyhow.

This is honestly a way better post than mine and says what I should have said myself!

The point of my old post was that the new clone prevented broken skills as well as spawned a clone that would still benefit the Mesmer. This is, as Dastion said, just more “intuitive.” Not to mention it would save Anet the work of changing it.

clone replacing third phantasm

in Mesmer

Posted by: ToaLux.6478

I still find the new clone fundamentally important to a couple skills, such as iLeap.

There are a handful of reasons to want to want that fresh clone (especially in PvP/WvW roaming) because of the positioning of the clone as well as preventing broken skills as previously mentioned. Additionally, one of the phantasms (typically the oldest one) will occasionally be close to breaking anyway, and replacing it with a clone will give you a fresh illusion in the position of your choosing, to set up a shatter burst mayhaps!

It’s definitely not a perfect solution, but it is the more complicated and less sensible, but sometimes effective, solution (in a few cases).

Fixed all that for you.

Thanks!

The only result was a bunch of LB Rangers saying hitting themselves in the face with arrows was a legitimate form of counter-play (that of course they executed intentionally). Then they tried to argue anecdotal evidence, attempting to derail the thread. You can find it just a bit back in my post-history…

Point is this: This needs a fix/change (maybe even change reflect to evade), and you spared yourself a headache posting here!

Reflect Causing Reveal Issues…

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ToaLux.6478

Yes, the option of removing MI was a valid suggestion, but it was not necessarily the best one.

The one of making the reflect apply after MI ends as how the Prestige function is an example of a great suggestion. Or yours, Surbrus!

The fact is that in WvW, you most definitely will be revealed by MI if you’re running from a zerg. You are also likely to reveal yourself when you try to red or stomp someone with MI. Same with Blink/Decoy combo in those same situations. Of course, the most glaring problem is simply MI by itself. The issue may not always seem like a big deal; but it is absolutely still an issue!

Reflect Causing Reveal Issues…

It apparently are too complicated for you, there are 6 different manipulations skills, and only ONE of those stealth you (mirror (okay i admit the reflect part of that trait is kinda wasted on that particular skill since… it part of the skill already), blink, Mimic, Illusion of Life, arcane Thievery and finally the stealth skill in question, mass invisibility, so its not the only time it turns on, and im pretty sure a big amount of memser runs at least blink as well (probably more than run MI), and the amounts of uses blink see due to the low cd compared to MI is gonna be HUGE compared, so really a better fix for your problem would likely be to remove the manip skill type from MI, rather than nerfing MI for 4 skills just to make it better for your one skill, IF anything should be done

Ok, you made a good point there right at the end! Maybe MI shouldn’t be a manipulation skill; that’s a valid point.

I’m not here to argue; that’s a fair suggestion. However, Blink is commonly paired with Decoy to make a clean getaway. That also causes an issue. My suggestion was make reflect not reveal; Surb suggested make it an evade. Not sure if either is the best option! They’re just suggestions

become aware that reflection means you can deal unexpected direct damage at any time. good thing you know when it turns on!

The problem is that it turns on when you activate a skill literally meant for stealth and stealth only. It doesn’t make any sense.

I wish you could say, “Oh I really want it to reflect right now” or “No, I really don’t want it to reflect right now”; but the point is that two mechanics are directly clashing, causing a clunky mash up result that commonly gets you killed—specifically with stomping and ressing.

It’s not that complicated, people

A simpler solution would be to change the Manipulation trait’s reflect into a simple evasion. I hesitate to say turn it into a Distortion, as that would be a very large buff (synergy with Inspiration’s minor trait to give allies your distortion), while a change from reflect to evasion would have some positives and negatives (mostly positive though, probably too powerful).

This. This would be beautiful too.

well dont get hit when you are in stealth then.
And saying it doesn’t make sense to get revealed if you reflect something while in stealth… doesn’t make sense (pun intended). Imagine being that ranger you shoot and arrow at an area, and that area turns around and hit you in your own face… you would certainly NOT just turn around and go like “hmm nothing’s there” no you would try and find out what is there, thus you as the reflecter get revealed.

And yes my main is a mesmer

An expected response!
The problem is stealth tracking, slow projectiles, and channeled skills.

Once you stealth, you have to dodge twice or pop Distortion to give yourself a chance of not revealing yourself due to Necro projectiles or Rangers’ Rapid Fire. That really is a gross misuse of either of those active, skillful defenses in either case.

Also, I’m not going to argue about anecdotal matters. It’s simply not the point of this thread! I’ll rewrite my tl;dr though!

Reflect Causing Reveal Issues…

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ToaLux.6478

ToaLux.6478

Hey, forum-goers and developers alike!
I am a lowly Mesmer concerned about an issue that’s become predominant since the patch for us.

Well, we can trait out manipulation skills to have not only 20% cdr but also to give us reflect (mirror) on skill use. Sounds great and all… but the problem is that this reflect reveals!

So you blink. Then you decoy. A Ranger’s shooting at you. The doofus hits himself in the face with his own arrows! Neato. But now you’re revealed.

It’s… frustrating. But, I mean, it’s not that bad! But then again, the elite manipulation, Mass Invis, has the sole goal of stealthing you and allies. That’s no good if it’s also going to reveal you! If you’re being shot at, it’s no longer about getting MI off; it’s about not revealing yourself after you cast it.

I know I could just not trait my elite and stun break teleport for 20% cdr… but it really shouldn’t have to be that way!

So, tl;dr:
Please make reflect not inflict reveal on a stealthed player. Or more likely, as Surbrus suggested, simply make Mesmer’s reflect on manipulations skill use an evade. It would be a great way to make it more fluid and less clunky—a great QoL change. Self-reveal like that is a strange thing. That’s all!
Thanks

Posted by: ToaLux.6478

ToaLux.6478

Hey, I totally main a Mesmer; but I wanted to just drop by to give a couple quick thoughts! I personally like the idea of shouts with cast time. It seems more sinister to hear a necromancer eliciting a blood-chilling incantation devoid of all hope of escape than a quick, small peep. That being said, those shouts… They have cast times, sure. But gee, are those shouts not potent enough.

I feel that their cooldowns really are too long. Seriously, they have cast times. And like no stab. Everyone who plays mesmer knows interrupting a necro is their favorite passtime.

Additionally, I’m totally for shouts doing damage. But really, that damage just isn’t enough! I think having shouts that inflict damage as well as debilitating effects is pretty cool, so actually doing a quite noticeable bit of damage would fit.

Also way dependent on multiple targets.

So idk. I like the idea behind their shouts, but I just don’t see them being worth taking right now…

Hey, you!

That was indeed a condi pu variant that focused more on aggression/killing power than most builds of the sort, as I’m sure you noticed

I did my best Sherlocking as mobile allowed, and I got this:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fhAQNAsaWlknpRtFpxMNcrNSpxY6ccDpCo0nUeKA-T1hHwAW0HUS9niK/et/AgTBQgnAAUlgkCAm5AA-w

That linked, some notes!

  • I left one trait blank because I really wasn’t sure. Well, I could have checked a bit more tightly, but eh! Same with runes. Everything else should be accurate!
  • PU is the Chaos tree’s GM trait that grants an extra second of stealth, as well as some boons. It’s good—build defining.
  • She can only cleanse 4 condis every 25s or so from her cleanse mantra. You can see the mantra on her profile bars with the wavy purple symbol when you have her selected. If you see she spent both its charges, she’s vulnerable!
  • Instead of opting for torch for more stealth, it seems that he took pistol mastery to net him more killing power as well as an extra condi on clone death.
  • Yes, there are condis on clone death, as you might know! He has all 3 traits: 2 are majors, 1’s a minor in the dueling tree.
  • So, when fighting that! Let me guarantee that AoE’ing him near his pistol phantasms to delete them will take you miles. Honestly, it would’ve made that fight a pretty easy win; she really invested in those pistol phants and lost a lot of defense from traited torch. Add on avoiding the clones on-death traits, and you’d have that Mesmer tied up.
  • You’re a pretty good player!

That’s all I have!

I think you should look into the Warrior profession! They use axes, which really look like martial animations when using a small axe. Of course, that’s not really a super great reason; but there’s more!

Warriors have a transformation elite called Rampage that gives them strong physical skills capable of incapacitating enemies with punches, charges, and kicks. You can also throw a boulder at them too if that’s worth anything to you. This elite skill lasts for a good while, so you really can feel like a martial profession for a bit every time you use it.

And also, the Rampage elite has become a bit more popular in PvP as of late, if that’s your cup of tea

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Warrior

Oh, and additionally, the warrior has a set of utility skills called Physical skills: one is a kick, one’s a smash, and one’s a charge stun. They’re not super great, but I think you’d enjoy them!

Downstate - A Compromise for Both Sides!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ToaLux.6478

ToaLux.6478

So those are my main two suggestions! Other than that, here’s a significant change that I wouldn’t mind seeing:

Downstate normalization. Some downstates are simply better than others. A Warrior will almost always win a downstate battle. After that, almost always a Ranger. And some are just plain better at avoiding stomps—Ele, for example.

If they all were, say, normalized, then people wouldn’t have so much room to complain about downstate, since it would be much more predictable and balanced, even if slightly weaker on some classes. My idea would be this:

1. A class-flavored dps skill (as already is)
2. A class-flavored interrupt (no exceptions.)
3. A class-flavored control/support skill (like Ele immob or Guard symbol, but not Engi or Thief’s double stomp avoidance)
4. Bandage

This would allow for more stomp predictability and doesn’t totally castrate downstates, since the recent Stability changes make cc’ing the stomper a totally viable strategy. Of course, there’re still skills like Ele’s mist form and such, but those already stomped 5 out of 8 classes anyway! That’s up to Anet to figure out. But, like this, it’s just more consistent. And balanced. Plus, I mean, come on, a person down in the dirt really shouldn’t be able to do much. Especially not stand up in a cloud of mist and run into a nearby tower or onto a capture node (sorry, Eles)

And lagniappe:
Hard ressing (ressing a defeated player) while in combat in WvW really needs to go… it’s kinda silly (to me) that you can just get 5 people to res someone who just got stomped out. It defeats the purpose of outplaying a larger number of enemies when solo/duo/you know!

Note: This isn’t comprehensive and does not cover all the tweaks that would have to be addressed if these downstate changes were implemented (such as profession health while downed). That’s too much for one post. I am aware that these suggestions reduce the player’s survival capabilities while downed.

For the record: I play Mesmer and Ranger (which have strong downstates).

Thank you all for reading! This is simply meant to be a thought-provoking, titillating catalog of suggestions on a subject that I am deeply fond of in GWs. I’d just like to see some changes to compromise between those who despise it in its current form and those who love it.

I invite you to construct on this, add your own ideas, or pose helpful criticism!

Downstate - A Compromise for Both Sides!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ToaLux.6478

ToaLux.6478

Downstate!

Lots of people hate it; lots love it. Even more want to see it tweaked a bit, mayhaps.

I fall into the last category! I am very happy with the existence of downstate in GWs; but I also feel that some normalization, balance changes, and penalties from ever ending up on the ground in the first place would work wonders in making it even more welcome in the game. My view point is from a PvP/WvW perspective.

I won’t pretend like my opinions matter more than anyone else’s or to Anet in any significant way, but I’d like to provide some food for thought

So! To begin: You downed someone. Good job! Now you go to immediately stomp, but they are ressed by one person before you can even complete the stomp animation. Well, that’s kinda ridiculous. What did downing the player even do? They get up—with a good chunk of hp now. And then what? They heal. Just like that, they’re back at 100%, and you ate a decent bit of damage trying to stomp. It’s as if they were never downed in the first place.

What change should be made to make it more enjoyable? Well, my core suggestion is this: if you are downed, you rally with a max health penalty for a set duration. This will make the player easier to be downed for a length of time, as well as making temporary down generation a viable strategy while fighting—down one player, focus on the next, down the debuffed player again quickly after they res. It will also help prevent rallies from causing one sided sweeps in zerg fights. After a few rallies from one zerg, the other zerg would begin to net some as well from rallying off players that had previously just been downed. What exactly am I thinking? I’d say 1st down caps your health at 75%; 2nd caps it at 50%; and any subsequent rally will reset the 50% capped health debuff.

I’d say that giving this debuff a 1 minute timer before automatically being lifted would be fairly balanced! And no, going out of combat should not remove it. That would be abusable and discourage fighting. But you can still get back to your temporary max health by doing that, at least!

My other core suggestion: Start the first downstate’s hp at 60% or so. Right now, it starts very high; and that allows for immediate resses by another player before you can even stomp. Another player can try to dps them down while you attempt to stomp, sure. But the entire point of downing someone is to make them vulnerable to finish. One person ressing someone before a stomp channel can even complete simply defeats the purpose of stomping—to avoid having to dps them down. Plus you’re likely taking dmg while trying to get the stomp off yourself—and wasting strong defensive cd’s that you’ve saved, waiting to stomp, like Stability.

~GW2 is my first MMO (recently made 2 years!); my friend bought my account for me as a gift, and consequentially my account doesn’t even use my email. This has caused issues before

~I run. That’s kinda my thing. Aside from running, I climb stuff. Literally anything and everything. Also doing flips off stuff I shouldn’t, whatever.

~My imagination gets out of hand. Sometimes what’s in my head jumps out, and then I have to deal with it. An example would be making a silly video because an idea for one popped into my head—I do not speak of the Gangnam Style video anymore.

~Favorite color is most certainly orange!

~Favorite foods are the classic pizza and PB&J.

~I am EXTREMELY competitive. I’m always a nice person, except when I’m losing. Then I’m a bit pouty, I do admit. At least I learn from my mistakes quickly!

~I kinda had a rough first decade of my life; I had only one friend until I was about 11. Things have improved greatly since then, and now I have more than I can count. They used to be all friends that I knew around me; but, in the past couple years, I’ve added many friends from GWs!

~I view “online friends” on equal footing with “irl” friends, and it upsets me a bit when people don’t view those friendships as being as meaningful.

~I can’t PvE in this game for whatever reason. I just can’t. WvW and PvP take up pretty much all of my game time!

Hiya! I’ll try to keep mine brief, but I want to contribute.

~fillaen
~Mesmer for a good bit ova a year.

~Alt: Ranger. Started on Ranger! Then Warr for 2v2s!
~Least Fav: I’ve tried them all, but I just am not a Guardian.
~Most Fun to Fight: Warr and Necro for sure. They’re like super intense PvE that you simply have to outplay to beat. It’s nice to dodge their big skills and dance around them!
~Least Fav to Fight: Ele. So much AoE and sticking power. Also near impossible to kill 1 on 1 if they’re good and running something tanky like knight’s or cele.

~Fav Mes Spec: A power, mobility focused build I made. Uses staff, sw/sw (style points for dual sword!)
~Role as Fav Spec: In PvP, to bunk points (with zerk) as well as +1 fights with the one big burst it has.
~Fav Partner: Uhm… I roam with a pistol whip thief a lot! Aside from that, a condi horn shout warr, probs.

~Mes Buff: I think the focus is the most dynamic weapon a Mesmer has, and its very mesmer-y. The problem is that it has too much competiton. I honestly want to see the focus curtain block projectiles as well as a slightly reduced cd on the phant summon. I want to have incentive to use the focus, and I feel that its current utility untraited is a bit inadequate. The trait would have to be reworked ofc, but it’s in such an awkward place anyway! Regardless, I’m sick of the Ranger pew pew.

Keeping it brief, so yea! Hopefully this at least shows an interesting perspective from a Mesmer, if nothing else

What class should I play alongside a Mesmer?

Clearly a lot of differing opinions! GWs is cool like that, haha

But my opinion: when I play power shatter, I love running with a burst guard. You can insta-gib a player at the start of a fight, and then follow up with AoEs and invlun/stealth/stab stomping/whatever. It’s really quite potent.

If I’m playing a less aggressive style like phantasm, I need someone who’s hard to target, so the phants have time to work. Therefore, a thief is a great choice that really synergizes well with a more attrition-based style.

Honorable mention is ele because ele!

Lastly: I definitely do not recommend a necro (or, for that matter, any build that’s easily focusable), unless you’re running power shatter.

Just my opinion!

I like the idea personally, especially for Spirit Weaps (I just really like Spirit Weaps). But Mesmer: I’d definitely use it in a phantasm hybrid build—that would basically be the equivalent of an extra condi on a target for the staff phant, really nice but not totally broken!

The biggest issue that I’d have with it (as well as others, I’m sure) is that it would further encourage the use of AI in PvP or roaming in WvW, which I think plenty of players would not like to see.

But yea, I like the idea; and I wouldn’t mind having it by any means

Mesmers who point to PU as a Training tool or training wheels. If someone asks you to teach them how to Drive a Nail into a board, you dont hand them Thor’s Hammer right off the bat and tell them Good luck.

That’s actually a good (and quite humorous) point; I had never thought of that way before. Thanks

I recall teaching a new Mesmer how to play and starting him off with condi PU. He liked gs too much though but wouldn’t switch to zerk. So basically he was a PU Mesmer with a rabid gs (And surprisingly enough, he did quite well with it!).

But yea, while PU teaches you how to press your weapon skills and decoy, it really doesn’t teach you when or why (They can’t hit what they can’t see, so I shall spam my stealth). Plus, it’s just such a relaxed way to play… you can basically sleep through it sometimes. I would even duel UI-less and win. But I’m not claiming PU to be immortal by any notion. The point is that it doesn’t really provide much incentive to explore other playstyles, which is a shame, really.

Geez, I love all of Chris’s sassy answers—he takes the words right out of my mouth half the time

I have no clue how you guys can slog through all the gunk here to find the constructive posts, but I really do appreciate the simple existence of this thread!

Sorry if they are coming across as sassy. just trying to be honest and a bit more human and less water of a ducks back as many of you have said i should try harder with.

It is actually much less frustrating to just say it like i see it. I hope though that this approach is taken in the spirit it is intended and not in a negative way.I tend to be like this on CDIs.

Chris

Pff, no! They’re brilliant! Haha, I love reading how bluntly honest they are

Believe me: I certainly do not take them negatively; I also think most others would agree with me. Keep it up!

Phantasmal Haste is being swapped with Maim the Disillusioned. We feel that this will provide build diversity and allow more players to trait Maim the Disillusioned.
Removed Torment from Maim the Disillusioned.

Illusionary Persona also kills the player, as they are being shattered. This makes more sense, thematically.

I read all of that, and it was awesome. This was my favorite part

Cry of Frustration is a kitten good suggestion – definitely the most “useless” shatter, mainly just supplementary damage to mind wrack, or simply to proc the shatter traits.
Maybe adding torment in addition to confusion for Cry of Frustration? Would certainly fit the theme of it.

Yea!

I spoke mostly from a Power Shatter perspective, but I’ve also tried Condi Shatter a lot too. Condi Shatter’s great—aside from one glaring issue: no hard-hitting Shatter. Cry on a condi spec puts on a good bit of confusion for a few seconds, but it really isn’t even close to Mind Wrack on a power spec. Applying an additional condi like torment per clone would certainly be quite the generous fix! It might be a bit much; but then again, Cry is on a 30 cd untraited, 21 max-traited.

(Just wanted to say for those considering Condi Shatter: I had the most success with a hybrid full rampager’s might stacking build with iPersona.)

Sure, here goes!

1. Give Blurred Frenzy its invuln back
Reason: Retaliation. There’s a strange phenomenon that occurs when I attempt to shatter burst a group of 3 or so people with a guard. I reverse-shatter myself. Retal. It’s simply not fun, nor is a random buff that instantly gibs you for trying to burst a group really something I’d consider to be legitimate counter play. Invuln on BF, however, would introduce counter play. For example, when dueling another Mesmer, you could BF through their phant summon—that is, a defensive use of BF.

2. Increase Cry of Frustration’s direct dmg
Reason: Burst that Mesmers lost due to the ferocity patch. The reduction of crit dmg is something that all classes deal with, but I feel that it really did cripple Shatter Mesmers more than something like a d/d Thief, for example. Another reason would be that, in general, Shatter Mesmer is a kill-or-be-killed spec: if our burst is dodged/avoided, we deserve to lose; but if our full combo isn’t enough to drop even a semi-tanky opponent, we don’t have much else left in most cases. Therefore, increasing Cry’s dmg would cost two shatter skills but boost our shatter dmg back into a comfortable pre-patch range.

3. More Boon-Strip on Mind Stab (GS #3)
Reason: The skill does nothing; sorry to be blunt. I use it to burst a bit on rare occasions as well as for trying to strip stability/protection (with little success). It’s been discussed to death, but I think that changing the hard-to-land skill with little dmg into a boon-strip utility-like skill would be a very nice fit for the gs! It could remove swiftness/vigor/stability to allow for your kiting/chasing. I also feel that it’d be balanced since it’s hard to connect reliably and does little dmg. Therefore, removing 3—or even just 2—boons would be all the buff I need for it

I feel that all of these buffs would be balanced and would greatly improve our ability to counter play and punish.

Thanks for reading!

Edit: Haha, some good ideas here already

Hiya!

I’m Filaen, as my signature suggests; and I’m sure most of you don’t know me at all, which is unfortunate and something I’d like to fix!

I made a fun little music video a few weeks ago, and I just told a few friends about it, but I kinda feel like others might enjoy it too. It’s just a small “thank you” to Guild Wars for all the fun I’ve had.

I know I don’t know many of you that well, but I’ve had my own small part in the Mesmer forum for months now: I know that this forum ABSOLUTELY has the best community and is the most receptive of new concepts and ideas. Therefore, even though this video includes Mesmer and Ranger and isn’t necessarily instructive, I believe this is the best place to show it.

So thanks for reading, and I sincerely hope you like it!

Edit: Changed the thread title to be a bit more descriptive/accurate.

I’d just like to say that new traits sound like a ton of fun, regardless of when they’re introduced

The only real concern to me is that of game balance, not when the traits are first added. But regardless, even if some of them are OP, they’ll at least offer new ways to play your favorite class

I’ve gone back and forth between WvW and sPvP a decent bit, and I’ve found that sPvP translates extremely well into WvW roaming, while WvW roaming on the other hand isn’t quite as beneficial. But certainly it still helps!

Regardless, all that Allie said is true

It definitely helps you to learn how your class works against others.

Even in a zerg, when you’re engaging another zerg, it can easily turn into a bunch of small skirmishes as people start to spread out.

Ah, a quick and concise answer, thanks!

And yea, I agree with Rym: ranger and pet are supposed to fight as one; it’s the ranger class mechanic.

Obviously necro pets and guard spirit weaps (utilities) and the others shouldn’t, but this is the ranger’s class mechanic!

Anyway… thanks again for the reply! That’s unfortunate, but I shall not give up so easily
