I can confirm you at the begin is was for me also confusing. And I also stick at fire, due the higher damage output. Even when I hit lvl80 on green + rare gear.

But afterward, when I realy start going in depth (also more PVP) I realise how much “more” output you can get by switching from attuement to attuement.

a simple exmaple why switching is a surplus: cooldowns:
if you stick on 1 attuement you’ll end up with at least 2-3sec (or more) on your autoattack, which is not your strongest attack.

as staff your job is also supporting your team. and fire isn’t the best way to support them.

example:
eart 2 (= blast finisher) can conbine with water 2 (extra healing), fire 2 (might stacking)

personaly, I kept my attuement on the f1-f4
but if it’s because the button are too far away, so it make you feel the laziness, then you always can keybind them. I know people use alt+1 – 4, shift+ 1-4, e,r,y,u (direction buttoen are tfgh), etc etc

Staff surly is a viable wapon for group PVE. you’ll be such good support, yet extreme good in damaging the foe’s.

Your friend is correct, change attuement is a blessing. not only for staff, all wapon choice, you need change attuement.

I’ve once hear that a good password is with special symbols, but a better password is a extrem long password, ea: Ioncewenttoagroceryandsawmanykittensinabasketsoikilledthemall
If you now add some symbol, not even chuck noris will ever hack this password

north upper level of ratasum. Where in middle you can buy the T1 – T3 gear items.

And if you stay long enough in that middle part you’ll encounter a event between a golem who will sue a Asuran ventor.

Where moto is, you’ll constaly hear “I like to think INSIDE the box!” or “jump in and suprise yourself!”

while as far as I know focus got only 2 defencive skill: earth 5, air 4.

I quit agree with LordByron, when I go to arah, I also use s/f.
The funny thing is, in arah you got way more openspace to walk, yet D/D isn’t very viable. :-)

When I fight a thief, the biggest flaw they do is, they think we’re squichy and will die after 2hit:
yes you’re right, we get killed in 2 hit, that’s why we also prepared our skills to prefent your 2nd hit.

I’d say, play smart, let us use our cantrip and survivaly skills (most of them got 20-40sec CD) then start hit hard.

And that’s not only for thieves, all class can kill us like this. Especially guardian, and warrior with their overpowred cc’s.

The fastest/best build for leveling is probably the Lightning Hammer build (20 points in fire for Conjurer and the rest in water). It has sick damage and an AoE blind on every third swing.

At level 80, the basic build is:

• Minimum of 15 points in water (preferably 25)
• Minimum of 10 points in arcane (preferably 20)
• Elemental Attunement required
• Your picks of the following traits: Spellslinger, Zephyr’s Boon, Earth’s Embrace, Soothing Disruption, Cleansing Wave, Powerful Aura, Cleansing Water, Hydromancer’s Alacrity, Blasting Staff, Renewing Stamina, Evasive Arcana
• Any gear
• Focus on cantrips for utility, especially if cantrip traits are picked

This is one of the most damaging build I’ve ever see, and I do enjoy the big numbers on the screen.
But I think my ally didn’t enjoy rezzing me. one or another reason, when you go to hammer build you get the full agro.

why d/d?
I can’t say d/d is the way to level. I’d even disagree with this comment. But D/D is a very versatil, yet very survival related wapon choice.

It give you buch of aura, which give you many healing, give bunch of combo finisher, and do decent damage.

custom skill:
I’ve used 3 cantrip, with the reason: dead dps is no dps.
Lightning Flash is a offencive as a defencive skill: you can use this to escape from an attack, but you can also jumping in a combat while channelling a skill.

why signet healing:
as a d/d you’re 99% tapping on your keyboard, instead of braindead auto attacking….which means you’ll have a super cool regen with this healing skill.

ultimate skill:
I like the golem, due your leveling, so sometimes you’re squichy. And sometimes, you just want that a little more tank for you.

trait:
I use 0/10/0/20/20
10 air: give you swiftness and extra change in crit. (not explaination needed I suppose)
20 water: water give you extra HP, which is required as a super squichy easy to kill ele cough. But most important thing is you’re able to cleanse your condition, “AND” give you and your team extra healing. The mayor trait I’d suggest to add cleanse condition, and other wheither lower CD on cantrip, or regen when use cantrip.
20 arcane: give -4sec cooldown on chaging atumement,which is awsomesaus! mayor trait I’d like the V which give your some cool stuff when changing attument. Other trait, you can choose by yourself: more running speed, more vigor regen, etc

so…we still got 20 point over…you noob!
well that’s the point you can use by yourself.
10 in arcane to get -6sec cooldown + arcane evasive (recommended)
10 earth and choose V, you got like 2-3 aura.
10 fire: for more dmg output, and I’d choose IV or V for some extra burning
or you can also go pro and awsome as me, and using the 5point minor trait combination (I’m testing this out, so can’t give full explanation yet)

gear wise:
I’ve used AC gear (thgn, vit, pwr) because I was still not so good at attumenent switching, etc etc and was afraid to die.
Now I go full berserck, and I’m one of the last that go down (and yes I do damage, not hidding in a corner)

Playstyle:
I’d start on air, and use 4 dashing combat
2 and/or 3 for weaken them and get more crit.
5 to interupt them, and escape if nessecary
change to fire
3 to dash in again
4 extra fire dmg
2 to burn
5 BAM! heavy hit! it’s super effective!
change to water
2 to do slow enemy (optional)
3 aura for more crit (see trait air)
change to earth
4 to interupt
2 starting you bleed
5 for another heavy hit with some 8stack of bleeding
here start the repeat

pro’s recommendation:
when you’re used to use your ele, you can start to change your playstyle, to attept your situation.
ea: more to water attuement for healing
ea: earth 5 is still on cooldown

your custom skill
use armour of earth when using earth 5 to prefent knockdown
use lighitng flash with earth 5 if foo runs away. => awsomesaus!

conclusion:
This is one of the most basic build for an ele, which is also a very veratile build, with survival.

Try to learn switching attuement, that’s what ele are.
Else go choose necro! >:0 (no offending to necro’s, if you feel offended, sorry)

Dagger dagger is the most common way to level.
I know there are also many player will say staff! or scepter! And there are also right.

I’ve level my ele on scepter until lvl30, then I’ve encourter the problem that my gear is lower then lvl20 and I struggle on survival (higher dps, but not enough to survive until the mobs are down)

I switched to d/d, which give me high amount of mobility to evade enemy’s attack.

but build wise: if you struggle in survival, add some point in water. if you’re ok with survival and want more smash smash, add some in arcane and/or air and/or fire.

you just got bad luck.
I’m a 100% ele player. And in wvw I love to nuke people down with my staff…or maybe i’m the forever alone staff user :-/

But I agree with Chaotic Storm, it’s like other classes, once you see a viable build to survive against the legion of lag and enemy (on youtube, self improvised, etc) you probably will skip the rest of the builds.
And luckily for us, we’ve some OP ele users who showed us on youtube.

I’ve turned on auto casting to win that 1sec of placing the aoe circle. But yup I agree with this topic, sometimes (on vital moment) I miss my mouse button. :-/

25g for eternal changing your trait when you want?
I don’t think you’ll need 1y to return your gold. This will be used as an abused: before each fight on bosses, they’ll change the spec suitable for that single boss. Plus if you go pug it will anoy people when you every time need 2min for changing your trait.

I like what they do now: only in certain places you got the oppertunity to change the trait.
Beside you still can change the mayor trait when you’re out of combat…how cool is that!

if you play easy mode, when he spawn the little rabbit ignore the pain and keep jump kick. Normaly you’ll have enough blood to kill it

I’d say put 10 point in arcane from air. So you got evasive dodge for some extra healing.

I’m not saying that it isn’t super-convenient to have a mesmer or group of mesmers sitting somewhere waiting for you; if you read my post up there I decidedly did NOT talk about WvW but about getting jumping puzzle achievement without achieving a jumping puzzle.

Let say this, they’re using an elite skill (with a cooldown of 240sec) for teleporting 5 people to get a chest.
- Which, imo 70% of the jp are kitten easy.
- which, some people are just bad in jp, and need some support

All this things for a elite skill… then I’m happy I got my tornato as elite, which I’m still confusing where I can use it ;-)

They’ve nerfed portal already. And teleporting people up, and I suppose you mean the eternal battleground jp, is imo mearly a tactical dicision: a mesmer must already walk the whole way to get there.
After succeed he can stay there and doing the “stay there doing some /dance, and wait for people who need the portal game v2.0”

I’m persoanly a ele player (just let you know, i’m not against your dissicion because i’m a mesmer) and I also sometimes curse my enemy with 3 mesmer standing there. And i’m at seafarer, that also means our enemy are top 10 wvw players. But fair is fair.

And if you say, this isn’t fair, then I’d sugest you transfer to other server where memser are 24/24 there so you can also enjoy the portal. Then you’ll see how pleasant it is to have a mesmer standing there.

ele’s healing power are ok, so racial healing skill isn’t a must

A small addition: in PVP ONLY, in PVE they need a lot of work/buffs and cannot do what a lot of other profs can do, or achieve similar results with a LOT more trouble, that makes the effort put into them not worth it. Fortunately with the upcoming WvW/PVE skill split they might start buffing Elementalist numbers to make them perform better, because it is fairly obvious that the reason Eles are in that (not so good) position is WvW.

I do not see how Ele are weak in PVE. I’ve run the past few month/weeks with 4-6 differnt build (staff, d/d, hammer) and can only confirm that we are affective in damaging and support at the same time.

Ofcourse if you try to say it to prevent nerf…yeah, buff ele plz they are too weak!!

Like all other event, I presume Moto will stay few weeks longer than his box. As ElenaDragon said.

And as many talks, it feels that they will expand the adventure box, so “maybe” after april they “may” put some more levels in de SAB…
