LOL CoF near impossible atm

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Vargs.6234

What a shame. Magg CoF was the most fun instance out there. I feel like a lot of these dungeons would be pretty entertaining and easy to get groups for if they were around the same difficulty as Magg’s path pre-buff. Something to break up the usual same-y events out in the world where you can grab pretty much any 4 people you want as long as they aren’t complete idiots.

Now it’s back to never finding groups for anything, because you can’t do it with pugs and you’ll almost never get enough people you know together that actually want to slog through a bunch of deaths and frustration for a miniscule bit of progress towards some dungeon gear. I’m in a guild that’s capped out in members and still it’s impossible to find people who want to do this stuff. I bet there are some really neat things that a lot of work was put into in a lot of these dungeon paths. Stuff that’s a lot cooler than “defend this circle against 800 centaurs”. Shame almost nobody will ever see it, and will instead be stuck breaking the morale of more centaurs and risen.

Why Are Risen So Uniquely Unsatisfying To Fight?

I wish Frostgorge was as good a place to endgame farm as Orr, because I really hate Orr and everything in it. The risen are seemingly designed to be as annoying and tedious as possible, and while Orr itself has a kinda neat underwater theme, overall the place just feels like a Quake 2 map. Ugly, difficult to navigate, and filled to the brim with colored lighting. Frostgorge, on the other hand, is pretty cool.

Flanking Strike is crap

I don’t really find infiltrator’s strike to be all that useful. It takes a bunch of initiative for something that you can almost always do by just running away. If you really, really need to you can dodge or stealth. Infiltrator’s strike also won’t help you get out of there if you’re in the fight for any length of time, since it’ll switch back over to the first skill in the “chain”.

Thief Underwater combat

in Thief

Vargs.6234

We’re pretty ridiculous tanks with the spear, maybe a bit too much so. Do we really need that many evasive abilities? #3 handles single targets fine, and #5 is perfect for keeping you alive against groups (bordering on overpowered), so I really don’t see much point in #2 at all. Some kind of offensive ability would be nice, because if you aren’t being attacked when using the spear you are utterly worthless. The #4 is also pretty awful as a gap closer, since you can’t do anything for a fairly long time after using it, making it do pretty much nothing to let you catch moving targets.

Really wish we had some form of AoE as well. It’s very difficult to deal with groups of enemies underwater, which is what underwater is almost always full of, without any real AoE. It also makes it difficult to tag enemies before others kill them. Normally against groups I find myself having to slowly, slowly, slooooowly pick them off one by one with the spear #5. The speargun does have some piercing attacks, but the only one that’s actually there to do damage is the #1, which is pretty bad for non-condition thieves and lining up piercing attacks is difficult enough with only two dimensions to worry about, let alone 3.

Thieves Guild really needs to be able to be used underwater. I can’t comprehend why we aren’t able to. I also tend to trait towards being fairly stealth heavy, which is not at all useful underwater and kind of screws over stealth thieves.

And if Heartseeker was your best DPS against bosses, you should be worrying about something else… lol

Okay, tell me what great and amazing options you have as D/P. You can spend 8 initiative to make a super weak heartseeker through a pointless black powder in order to backstab, but with all the time spent doing that and positioning around to the back I don’t think it’s any better than autoattacking.

in my game there’s this awesome ability called “weapon swap”. i press the ~ key get to use an entirely different set of weapons! amazing!

i’d suggest keeping a set of Pistol/Pistol or Sword/Dagger in your other slot if you want to have a good set to use against bosses.

And my point is that we previously had a perfectly effective all-around weapon set that is now completely useless in a very common PvE situation, solely due to people whining about one ability in sPvP. Which is not great when you have such an incredibly limited weapon selection as the thief.

So yeah, now D/P thieves need to take along another weapon to deal with champions/bosses. But they already needed to take another weapon set for AoE, and I’m pretty sure Arenanet didn’t just add a third weapon set slot. The only setup that adequately satisfies both of those requirements is S/D, but hey, now you don’t get a ranged weapon.

I’m mostly bummed out about this for PvE. It was justified in PvP, but mobs don’t care if you spam the 2 key over and over, and against very weak enemies it was often the best option to take them down quickly and move on. It’s not like the damage was super crazy or anything anyways – a warrior will do far more and in an AoE. As a D/P thief I’m also basically worthless against champions/bosses until they get under 50%, because unshakable means black powder/head shot do almost nothing and heartseeker does next to no damage. Not much to do other than autoattack.

P/P is significantly weaker than other weapon sets because of how insanely good unload is with combo fields.

Is it just me or could sword/dagger use a rework

in Thief

If the stealth attack hit multiple targets instead of just one I would think the set is pretty decent. It works okay enough in PvE against one mob, since you can keep chaining CnD to daze and proccing blind each time with the “blind while stealthing” trait. But toss in multiple enemies and you just get rocked, which is something any offhand pistol set does not need to worry about. And D/D has evasion spam with death blossom.

The 3 is still pretty bad but with just that one change I think S/D would be worth using sometimes.

Basilisk venom = most useless elite skill ever

in Thief

Posted by: Vargs.6234

Vargs.6234

You guys are forgetting one incredibly powerful thing: Superior Rune of Lyssa. The important part is your bonus for having all 6 runes:

When you use an elite skill lose all conditions and gain all boons for 5 seconds.

With 20 points in deadly arts, you can get basilisk venom down to a 36s cooldown. This makes that skill extremely powerful.

I’ll agree, it’s not the world’s best. However, try combining it with that rune and you’ll be very happy with the results.

On the other hand, you’re giving up all of your rune slots (360 stat points and 12% crit damage with runes of divinity) as well as an actual useful elite to get this.

Leveled up leatherworking to 400 on the way up to 80, but never really made anything worth using during that time. Ended up actually wearing maybe 3 pieces of what I’d crafted total, and they weren’t very good items. It seems nearly impossible to keep your crafting level up with your character level unless you buy lots of materials off the trading post (which didn’t work at the time), but at that point, why not just buy the items themselves? Or just don’t bother at all and wear what drops because it isn’t really worth it to blow tons of cash on something that will be outdated in a few hours.

I did end up making myself a couple sets of level 80 yellow gear but it didn’t seem much cheaper, if any cheaper than just buying that stuff off the TP. Hell, I could have gotten 78 oranges for about that price, which not only have very slightly better stats but also don’t require the high end transmutation stones.

But hey, at least I can make stuff for my engineer alt, right? I’ll just put together this set of level 20 greens so I’ll have something cool waiting for me. Wait, what’s that? My level 21 engineer just picked up a level 21 blue with significantly better stats than the stuff I just made? Well then.

I melee probably around 80% the time as a thief, be it in general PvE, dungeons, or WvW. That giant event in particular kind of sucks though and nobody should ever do it. It’s actually pretty easy to dodge his attacks but it’s like a ten minute slog and you’re bound to slip up eventually. Not worth ranging it either. Ten minutes of plinking away for one DE reward? No thanks. Screw that guy. There are similar ones in harathi and orr that should also be avoided at all costs.

I really doubt they’re purchasing new accounts so much as they are stealing accounts, vendoring everything and offloading all of that person’s money, and then using that account to spam and/or bot until it gets banned.

Combos: great idea with no impact

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vargs.6234

Vargs.6234

But I’m going to be using my combo finishers all the time anyways, so being able to position myself into a combo field to get extra benefits is great.

Two important points there:

1 – No thought. You were going to use your abilities anyway – there’s no tactical reason you’re using combos. Just because “they exist.”

2 – While you’re busy getting into position (and the already short duration is clicking away, in most cases before you get there or have to dodge out of the way) you’re also not doing what you’re supposed to be doing which is a) killing things and b) staying alive.

Is the tradeoff to get into a 1 second combo field worth it? My math says no.

Most of the time “getting into position” means “circle 3 feet to the left around the mob I’m attacking since people drop combo fields on top of monsters all thekittentime” so I’m not sure why you feel it isn’t worth it.

Combos: great idea with no impact

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vargs.6234

I don’t really feel this way at all as a thief. With extremely easy access to cluster bomb and heartseeker, I can constantly be making use of other people’s combo fields. One of my favorite parts of the class, really. Is it so powerful that I specifically plan to work with others to make use of them? Generally no. But I’m going to be using my combo finishers all the time anyways, so being able to position myself into a combo field to get extra benefits is great. And sometimes it is worth focusing on combos just for their own sake. During certain boss fights or WvW situations I’d be doing a hell of a lot more good hitting friendly water or fire fields with cluster bomb to heal or grant might to others than I would anything else. And heartseeking through your own black powder is pretty much the cornerstone of the thief dagger/pistol weapon set.

Thief support?

in Thief

Posted by: Vargs.6234

Vargs.6234

Black powder by itself is one of the best support skills in the game. There is nothing else that will mitigate damage as well against non-unshakable mobs. Shadow refuge and the thief’s ability to easily get out of danger and stay alive for long periods of time also make us one of the best ressers. Blast combo finishers are the best kind of combo finishers and nobody can put them out like we can with the shortbow. Spamming cluster bomb into certain combo fields can do wonders.

Best part is you can do all of this without even having to spec your traits into it.

Mediocre, single target only damage at the cost of all of your initiative. And the other abilities don’t really mesh well with unload. The basic attack is mostly condition damage, which is a problem considering unload is all power/precision based. The #2 is total garbage. #4 is decent, but using P/P you’re gonna be starved for initiative. And #5 in particular just takes waaaay too much initiative for an initiative-starved weapon setup, forcing you to spend a lot of time doing weak, nearly useless #1 attacks.

If you want to do single target ranged damage there are plenty of classes who do it far better than thief.

Shortbow vs Dual Pistols

in Thief

Posted by: Vargs.6234

Vargs.6234

Shortbow does not do bad damage. Running in point blank and spamming cluster bomb is probably our best AoE option. Cluster bomb spam into friendly combo fields is also extremely effective, depending on the combo field. The utility on the #5 is also just fantastic, and while the single target dps may be lackluster you can kite for ages using the shortbow.

I don’t really like P/P. If I want single target damage I’ll typically go with a melee build like D/P or D/D which don’t have to sacrifice every ounce of initiative they have just to deal some single target damage, and can instead offer a little more utility without dropping their dps down to negligible amounts. P/P is also just incredibly boring.

My personal opinion: Precision should be remade

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vargs.6234

Vargs.6234

Typically your gear gets better as you level, making your crit rate stay about the same. You’re just talking that the completely broken warrior trait that gives +40 precision per signet regardless of level, making you an absolutely ridiculous god of death and destruction for the first 60 levels of your character’s life. Precision does not need to be remade, but that trait does need to scale the same way signets normally do – by giving you less of a stat the lower level you are. No need to change the whole system when a single tier 1 trait is to blame.
