I know it’s now GW1, but it’s the same company making one mistake after another, while they did it better in their previous game. Seems silly to upset people by doing something that clearly isn’t as cool as what they did in GW1. They couldve done something entirely different than this for all I care. But they gave a mini, like in GW1 but didn’t make them collectible. Why bring something in they clearly did in GW1 but make a lesser version of it? That just boggles the mind.
So no one ever complained about changes and stuff done in Guild Wars 1…is this your contention?
Do you know why Guild Wars 1 didn’t see forum issues like Guild Wars 2 does? Because it had no official forums and for most of it’s life, people went to Guru, where the moderators for most of it’s life were so strict it was worse than the military.
I made a negative post once about Guild Wars 2 and my thread was immediate closed. So yeah…hard to say that people didn’t complain about stuff done in Guild Wars 1, because people complain about everything all the time. I’ve been in lots of MMO forums and they’re all like this.
And I strongly suspect if Guild Wars 1 had an official forum (which they didn’t), it would have ended up much like this as well.
OP my advice to you is to find a friendly casual guild, of people you can talk to, who can walk you through some of the stuff you might have missed.
This game, for me anyway, is much better playing with other people than trying to solo it. It was never designed to be a single player game and while it can be played that way, it’s by far the least convenient way to play it.
MMOs are designed for people to play together. Guilds help each other figure out things, they can come to the rescue when you have a big event and not enough people around…they can even suggest you hang out in Rata Sum instead of LA if the crowds are bothering you.
But though the game has changed, all the stuff you liked is actually still here. And those chests your getting? The gold in them will help you catch up to the economy a bit too.
I appreciate them, but I don’t know what to do with the extra identical mini’s o_o
Nothing, but since they stack in a dedicated bank space, I just leave them there in case Anet figures out that people want something to do with them. Maybe, down the road, they’ll be part of a mystic forge recipe.
But you do realize if they gave unique minis to each person who was an altoholic, people would say they were trying to force people to buy character slots, and people who play one character would complain that people with multiple characters have an in game advantage.
No matter what Anet did, they were going to get flack.
Unique minis? Not necessary. Random minis from a pool set aside specifically for birthday gifts? I don’t see any harm in that.
I know you don’t see harm in that. I don’t see harm in that either. But the conspiracy theorists would. They would say people who bought character slots will have a chance of getting more valuable minis and this game is now pay to win.
Hell I’ve seen it said over more ridiculous stuff than that.
You can easily split the community into 2 parts: the ones who accept everything with a big greedy smile because ’IT’S FREE GYZ LUL’, and the ones who played GW1 and has common sense and got used to quality.
This might be the most untrue post ever. There are only two types of people…those who classify people into two types…and those who don’t.
I’m not greedy and I don’t really care very much what I get for free. But quality is very much a matter of opinion. You think Guild Wars 1 had better quality birthday gifts, because they randomized some minis. You’re calling this quality? It’s a design decision. What you consider quality depends on how you feel about minis. For a lot of people it was a greed thing. They wanted the chance to get something really really valuable so they could sell it. That’s more a greedy smile thing to me than this. Many of these people are mad because they can’t sell their minis. So much for the greedy smile theory.
Quality can be judged in a lot of different ways. Guild Wars 1 was a very different game than Guild Wars 2 is…I’m not sure it was a higher quality game.
But either way, the choice of birthday gifts has nothing to do with quality.
Because they’ve provided no in game minipets for free at all? This makes no sense. They wouldn’t have had to give up minipets from the sets they’re selling, for which there is an achievement.
I mean I keep getting minis in game for free. So it probably isn’t this.
How does it not make sense? They just added 46 new mini-pets to the Gem Shop. They could have reserved a dozen or so of these to be given randomly as birthday gifts. But they didn’t. The fact that we’ve been able to earn a few (which is obviously not the same as being given a few) through in-game achievements doesn’t change the fact that they could have but didn’t use a portion of the 46 new mini-pets just added to the game as birthday gifts.
By the same token, they could have made a dozen from other creatures in the game having nothing to do with what’s put in the gem store.
How many minis ended up getting given away at say Southsun Island during the event there. I got three minis from that one event.
You’re connecting two things and I don’t see how you can connect them.
There are threads were people are complaining about getting minipet rewards for content, and you’re saying Anet doesn’t want to give them away for free, because there are already minipets in the shop.
But they have been giving them away for free. What people buy them for is the achievement. The special minis don’t count toward the achievement.
Do you think it’s so hard for Anet to make a mini from an existing model? They could have easily made 10 random ones that didn’t count toward a title.
I suspect their reasoning was that they didn’t want to give people the impression they were trying to make people buy character slots just to get the minis. You think people wouldn’t accuse them of that?
Guild Wars was special to you. Guild Wars 2 is just another game to you.
Guild Wars was special to me, but I like Guild Wars 2 more than I liked Guild Wars 1. They are very different games.
I’m sure that you’ll find another game you like more, but I think a lot of your negativity towards Guild Wars 2 is because Guild Wars 1 was special to you. In order for this game to have been as special it would have had to have been closer to what Guild Wars 1 was.
That it wasn’t feels like a betrayal to a whole lot of people.
Well, GW1 was special to me too and so is SWTOR. Even Aion I had more of a connection with in the end than GW2.
I do think you’re right that GW2 feels like just another game tough. That’s particularly rough since it’s called Guild Wars like it’s predecessor. Honestly I think it would’ve been fairer if they’d given it a completely different name since, obviously, people who liked GW1 a lot cannot help but feel this is nothing like it and that’s what the GW name meant to them.
It’s all water under the bridge by now, but yeah, you’re right. GW2 doesn’t feel special and it should’ve from my point of view. But even that aside I just don’t get how they seem to hate on GW1 themselves. Not in words, but they new the mini’s were a big deal and still are to a lot of people. The GW1 system for b-days worked really well. Why on earth would you choose to change something that worked into something that anyone can tell you, isn’t as good an idea as how they did it before.
It just seems that Anet wants to get away from GW1 just for the same of getting away from it. Even the good stuff there they don’t want to keep. At least that’s how it feels to me.
Guild Wars 2 is literally the first MMO I could stomach for any length of time. I don’t consider Guild Wars 1 an MMO for various reasons, and neither did Anet.
Of MMOs I’ve played WoW, Rift, Lotro, Aion, AoC, Perfect World, DDO and a few other odds and ends along the way. I couldn’t stay past the 3-4 month point in any of them. AoC would have likely been the closest, but for constant crashes on my machine (when no other game did). Lotro would have been next, but the amount of money that cash shop cost me was obscene.
In the end, this is the first MMO I’ve made it past the four month mark with. Is it special?
Compare to other MMOs out there, it is to me.
C’mon ANET, we know that you’re watching the forums, post something, explain the reason about the decision to make the birthday presents that way.. or you will just wait till 28th for the real kittenstorm that is going to come to the forums about all the people get their presents…
What is there to explain? They decided they’d rather sell us mini-pets than give them to us. It really is that simple.
Because they’ve provided no in game minipets for free at all? This makes no sense. They wouldn’t have had to give up minipets from the sets they’re selling, for which there is an achievement.
I mean I keep getting minis in game for free. So it probably isn’t this.
Maybe they shouldn’t have loot in games at all, because characters are not real. In fact why make games at all….none of it’s real.
Real nice. Because playing a game for fun is the same as people treating a virtual birthday as a real birthday and wanting to feel “special” from a faceless gaming company. It’s not real, ANet does not know who you are, will not tailor a present to your liking. The birthday system is an automated system that sends out little trinket gifts on a virtual birthday. That’s it.
First of all, you don’t get to decide for other people what’s fun to them. A lot of GW1 players had fun collecting and trading mini’s. It worked just fine. It’s beyond me why they didn’t use the same good idea and had to do something else that isn’t as good.
Secondly, Anet started this tradition themselves in the first GW1. I am pretty sure there would be an even bigger kittenstorm if they hadn’t done anyhting as you suggest.
Lastly, people do care about their characters especially when they spend a lot of time on them. If you don’t get that, that’s ok, but just realise characters do mean something to a lot of people as we can see. Ignoring that doesn’t make your comment any less ridiculous.
You’re not wrong. This seems a pretty strange choice for Anet to have made. I’m not quite sure what’s behind it.
But you do realize if they gave unique minis to each person who was an altoholic, people would say they were trying to force people to buy character slots, and people who play one character would complain that people with multiple characters have an in game advantage.
No matter what Anet did, they were going to get flack.
What Anet should have done is given everyone a random free mini from the first series. The only downside to this is people who dont’ have multiple characters would feel altoholics like me are getting a major advantage.
I appreciated the first gift and the three items in it, even though I probably won’t use any of them. I giggled at the second gift and the same three items as the first gift. Five gifts later and I’m no longer amused. I feel more “trolled” having to delete the items to not waste space.
why would you have to delete stuff that stacks…especially the mini which has it’s own collectible space.
So, back to point on my original topic. I know I’m nowhere near alone on this feeling. The Anet we know from GW1 wouldn’t do this to us. The Anet from GW2 is lacking PR and seems to just think that releasing a new area (then removing it at any time) and making nerf/buff adjustments every 3 months is adequate.
My original point was that the birthday gifts feel like someone who doesn’t like you showed up to your b-day party and gave you a gift because their mother told them they had to. Granted they didn’t “have” to do anything and I’m well aware, and this game still far outweighs so many and will for years. But in this instance we feel like we our characters are like children of Anet and woke up Christmas morning just to find that our parents didn’t want to take the time to get us anything but a couple pairs of socks.
You’re not the only one who wonders who these people are, and what have they done with ArenaNet.
Guild Wars was special. GW2 is just another game. For many, many reasons, most of which have nothing to do with this birthday present thing. I am seriously on the lookout for a new game to play. Once once catches my fancy…I’ll be there. And that never happened to me during my Guild Wars years. I’m sure I’m not the only one, and there’ll be a sharp drop in playerbase once something good releases.
Get out of combat, go to the mists, chat as long as you like. When you’re done chatting, leave the mists, you’ll be back where you were. It doesn’t cost you anything and it’s not much different from pausing the game.
Two-week PvE upgrades, centered around different things each time. Some more challenging stuff like the Queens Gambit has come out and a lot more farming opportunities for people who like that sort of thing.
XP and passive progression added to WvW, culling ended all over the place…and I’m sure there’s more.
Depending on why you left, it may or may not be better.
Of all the things people are complaining about, this one matters least to me.
I’d much rather complain about things like stability during the events, or not getting credit for some achievements randomly.
I guess I see it differently than you.
Normally, I’d agree – but this just seems to be yet one more content release that wasn’t well thought through, has bugs, and is generally underwhelming. Believe it or not, I found (and still find, to some degree) character birthdays in Guild Wars exciting. You never knew what you were going to get, and there was always the chance of it being something pretty cool. Moreover, if you wound up with 2 of something, you could trade. Or even collect them all if that’s your thing.
This just didn’t feel very special. You’re right in that many games don’t even do birthdays, but they did them well in Guild Wars. In fact, I even kept alts around just for the birthday presents. I don’t see the point to that here. Even birthdays aren’t alt-friendly in GW2.
Now of course, ArenaNet has no obligation to make anyone feel special. But they did have an opportunity, and when you can do that for a customer, you really should.
This whole thing just reflects on them as not really caring about their game or community any further than as a business. And if you’re just interested in doing business without all that community fluff, well, maybe making a game isn’t the best choice.
I think that’s why people are feeling disappointed. Deep down inside, it was yet another case of excitement building up over time, only to have that balloon popped by an apparently oblivious ArenaNet.
I don’t know. A lot of people seem to really like this event. You can say all you want, this is just another event, but I’m seeing full servers, overflows, people really getting into it.
In fact, I’d go as far to say that this has been a very well received update in general.
That isn’t to say there are no bugs. That isn’t even to say the birthday gifts are underwhelming (which they are)…but the upgrade itself seems to have been very well received…in spite of the bugs.
If you really think a birthday gift makes that much of a difference, I guess you’re right. I don’t see the birthday gift as anything special.
Most games don’t have them at all. The scroll, account bound is nice, because I have a whole bunch of characters so I can have that buff for days on end. When I make a new character, I get to bypass the starting zone, which isn’t such a bad thing either.
Is this the absolute best birthday gift ever? Not by a long shot. Is it a big deal?
Not to me.
Of all the things people are complaining about, this one matters least to me.
I’d much rather complain about things like stability during the events, or not getting credit for some achievements randomly.
I guess I see it differently than you.
What’s the point of making them not account bound if everyone is going to get one anyway?
Happy birthday, Guild Wars 2!
Congratulations Arenanet, you disappointed almost everyone who played GW1, this birthday gift was the final nail in the coffin. You forgot us, time for us to forget you too.
I don’t know where you get your numbers from, because a good portion of my guild played Guild Wars 1 and most of us don’t seem disappointed. Why not speak for yourself, instead of trying to claim a majority without proof?
The focus on the Gem Store won’t let up until some real competition is released. Then I bet you’ll see some relief in trying to keep players. shrug
And if every game from this time on is focused on the gem store? Do you really think time is going to go backwards? Games are increasingly focused on the gem store, because that’s how they fund development. It’s so competitive that in today’s market, if they want to make more content, which does keep people in game, they need income. One boxed sale price won’t do it.
So what do you do? Have a game with less content like TSW which most people don’t play? Is that the solution? And they do focus on their cash shop.
Most $60 games give you 20 hours of play. An exception game like Skyrim might give you more…but if you want 500 or more hours of play, you can’t just charge $60. Anet said from the beginning their cash shop is a significant part of their business plan.
I’m not sure why that makes them greedy.
People still replying to this? GW2 is terrible. Get over it.
Guild Wars 2 is a good game with some decent potential that’s still evolving. It’s not terrible…you simply don’t like it. And that’s okay.
But the one to get over it is you. If the game is so terrible, why do you feel it’s necessary to hang around the forums and tell that to people who actually like it?
Unless you find this fun. I think you’d be spending the time playing a game you enjoy.
I’m sorry OP, are you suggesting that Scarlet has the ability to take over watchknights, but she’s completely mystified in how to take over Steam Mechs?
According to the short story on the Guild Wars 2 page, Scarlet was always a bit “selfish” but it was after an Asuran experiment gone wrong that she became what she is today.
lol, since when do the gem store profits go to improve GW2 and not one of NC Soft’s other crappy MMOs?
What evidence do you have of this, other than a video by some guy who thinks he knows stuff?
Businesses all pretty much work the same way.
The simplest example would be that Anet is paying 4 different teams to make living world content and other teams to make other content. Where did you think that money was coming from?
In fact, NCsoft provided the funds to complete Guild Wars 1. Saying that they’re making all the money is pretty rich.
Where do you get the information from?
Right, that’s what I’m saying…because that’s what Anet has said.
And I’m saying that when Anet says something it’s not written in stone, because they can just as easily make a 180 and say well, we didn’t actually say never and circumstances are different now blah blah blah.
Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next two years we suddenly see an expansion bringing Cantha, simply because they said it’s unlikely to happen.
I’m not saying they’re not going to bring Cantha in. I fully expect Cantha and Elona. I’m saying it’ll be an expansion, not a full game like they did with the first Guild Wars.
The reason they gave for saying it makes as much sense now as it did back then. When and if they come out with an expansion, it will be a true expansion, not a stand alone product.
Here’s the thing… they’re not “re-doing maps” – you are traversing a world that is supposed to feel like a place. It’s supposed to mean something to have to go from point A to point B… it’s supposed to give you a sense of place.
That’s a single player or GW1 mentality. For an open persistent world, waypoints were a huge mistake.
what do you mean it was to mean something? In no MMO has traveling ever meant anything. The only difference was whether it was annoying or not.
GW1 I found to be a completely different mentality – oh you have to log out or you died? Well sorry, you lost pretty much all your progress. That’s not how a casual MMO should work.
What was worse in Guild Wars 1 was fighting your way through hard mode to get to a dungeon, and then realizing you didn’t have the quest to start it, so you had to teleport back to an outpost and start all over. lol
wow I’m surprised there wasn’t a single reply in favor of op’s post. i read it all thinking “yea that’s pretty much how I feel” and thought he laid out some reasonable criticisms and possible solutions. the game needs to be more challenging and punish mistakes more. otherwise the victories are meaningless. i can’t say anything about the wvw section though, since I don’t play it.
A certain type of player plays games for challenge. But then, what’s more popular, slot machines or chess? Chess is more challenging but more people play slot machines. Why? Because people require different things out of games.
I don’t mind occasionally challenging content, but I’ve already done the hard yards. I’m older. Life was challenging enough for many, many years. Now, when I sit down to entertainment myself (and make no mistake, games are a form of entertainment), I want to relax, not be frustrated, not bang my head against wall. I just want to have a good time.
For many people games are an alternative to TV or movies or books. They’re something to enjoy. Not everyone desires the same level of challenge in their down time.
i thought it was funny you compared chess against a soul-sucking gambling addiction machine. feels like an appropriate metaphor for gw2.
I could have used farmville for that matter. No challenge, but kitten popular. Most people want to escape. Life is challenging enough.
And yes, some people really do want challenge, but I’m not thinking they’re the majority.

How would you know if there really aren’t that many? Again, baseless assumption unless you can provide concrete statistical data. Nice false analogy with movie spoilers there by the way, “apples and oranges”. And what makes you think answering a question asked in map chat via the same method is inconsiderate? Again with the condescension. It could just as easily be helpful and definitely more efficient for people who wants to know the same thing than whispering every single one of them.
These fansites aren’t meant for people like you who enjoy taking their time doing quests. So don’t look, simple. If someone mentions something you don’t want to hear via map chat, tough luck. But it happens. Deal with it. Don’t blame it on the fansites
Don’t tell me who to blame and who not to blame.
Those who remember what RPGs were, will probably understand what I’m talking about. If you think that these fan sites are doing a service to the genre, that’s all well and good. I don’t, and apparently other people don’t either.
The simplest logic in the world dictates that the more people who know about something, the more likely the secret will get out. This isn’t something you need to argue, because it’s not possible to argue. There’s no proof necessary.
If 10 people know something, there’s less a chance seeing it in map chat than if 10,000 people know something.
If you have an argument with that logic, I’d love to hear it.
You can also use 3 weapons and 1 mystic forge stone, that will always give you a weapon.
I bet that’s going to be fun for people trying to do their world completion or just level up in a few weeks when the next living story farm-o-matic draws the zergs off the invasions. At random you’ll have a zone turned into an uninhabitable mob-fest.
It won’t be as often as it is now…and since it’s only in one zone at a time, unless that zone is the very last zone someone needs, they can work on another zone until it’s done.
I don’t see this as a big deal. The very worst case scenario is that they’d have to wait 40 minutes extra for world completion.
I think it has to do with how you had your WvW settings before, since this took over from them.
I agree. Ignorant people saying “don’t use it if you don’t like it.” Yeah that’s not the point. It’s nice to every once and a while have some mystery and need to figure things out as players.
This is just selfish. Fansites like Dulfy’s that provide walkthroughs don’t ruin “mystery” because the official site already provides information about upcoming patches way before Dulfy does.
Just out of curiosity, can you guys specify examples of particular infos you see on map chat that you didn’t want to read (spoiled the patch for you)?
Also, burning through content fast is not a problem if it’s enjoyable. You know, replayability and and all that.
There’s a big difference between a teaser and a walkthrough. A really REALLY big difference.
There’s no way you can compare what’s on the official site with what’s on the Dulfy site. The official site has relatively few spoilers…if any.
I know, but what mystery is being ruined by a walkthrough if you already know what the event is and its rewards when it’s already been released via the official site? You even get the information in-game via the achievement panel.
Still, provide an example of what information has been spoiled to you via map chat.
It’s not a question of mystery, it’s a question of wanting to solve stuff. The simplest and most recent example there was was when I walked into the Pavillion after doing the Funhouse and some guy was saying, sure the haystack is right here.
I’m pretty sure I could have found the haystack looking myself, but after seeing that in map chat, I didn’t have the option.
And sure, I could turn off map chat, but I lose other benefits of map chat.
Every time there’s some sort of event that requires search, some “helpful” person in map chat will tell everyone where it is, whether they care to see/hear it or not. I can’t know for sure that all those people got this information off one of the sites, but I can say that people who like to find out stuff themselves, probably aren’t the people in map chat sharing this stuff.
And this is why your argument is so weak. It relies on baseless assumption.
There will always be people who will solve puzzles faster than you, and people who can’t solve them are allowed to ask for help and be helped in return via map chat. Blaming it on fansites is ridiculous.
It’s a foolish notion that fansites that intend to aid the community would ruin an MMO just because it allows SOME players to do quests faster.
My assumption isn’t baseless at all. There are people who solve puzzles faster than me…but there aren’t like that many. I solve puzzles relatively fast. But if you can go to a fan site and a hundred thousand people have the answer before the content actually launches (and yes that has happened), then 100,000 people have a chance to say something in map chat, instead of the 10 or 20 thousand that might have figured it out before me.
If you honestly think that people don’t go to fan sites to get this information and then share it all over map chat, I’m not sure there’s anything left to talk about.
And people like me, and those people I know, who do solve puzzles, wouldn’t think to say it aloud in map chat, because even if someone did ask for help, I’d whisper them so as not to spoil it for anyone else.
Once upon a time, that was called consideration.
I wouldn’t do it any more than I’d sit in a movie theater and reveal who the murderer is, just because I’d read the book first.
Change the bottom two settings…character model limit and character model quality. They’re both set to low. That’s your problem.
I think if they turned this game into something you’d like to play, I’d probably leave it.
There’s nothing for them to be disappointed about. Players want content, you know, where the gameplay is at? Anet’s priority isn’t gameplay but gem store. People are annoyed because there’s nothing to do nor have anything worth waiting for and its anet that should be disappointed? If anyone, its the player that should be disappointed because he/she spent 60$ for an mmo that was suppose to last years, ran out of content in under 5 months. Now they’re talking about end of 2013 for minor content and all the stuff worth talking about is for 2014,,,,, what’s up with that? What next, when 2014 arrives they’ll be talking about 2015 for all their major content? Release an expansion already and stop with your Garbage Story that is insanely repetitive.
According to you, Anet’s priority is the cash shop not game play. Not everyone would agree with that assessment.
You keep bashing the game because you personally don’t like the content upgrades, but it seems a lot of people do. And free content every two weeks, without a pay to win aspect doesn’t seem like the cash shop is taking front and center here.
You’re talking about random skins, and shiny items? That’s what is supposed to be sold in a cash shop.
There’s ton of new stuff…what area of the game do you focus on so I can pare it down?
I agree. Ignorant people saying “don’t use it if you don’t like it.” Yeah that’s not the point. It’s nice to every once and a while have some mystery and need to figure things out as players.

“The invasion is not active in this overflow”
Meanwhile, there are like 20 people at each waypoint, waiting to get into the non overflow verison of the zone that has the event.
So those people also didn’t read patch notes. If you’re more than ten minutes past the hour, you have to wait till the next hour. Wait until the text on the right side of your screen changes, tells you the zone and way point there.
As long as you’re within ten minutes past the hour, you’ll get the events.
I’ve done it on two characters and have two more than are getting up there. I don’t see myself doing it on more than four characters though.
The zone wide invasions will continue on past this update. They’re not going to stop in two weeks. You’ll still be able to experience them.
It’s my hope they introduce an expansion too, in addition to the living story stuff. I’d also like it if they could make the living story stuff last longer, because once every two weeks is pretty tough on us obsessive people. lol
TSW disappointed me, because of some of their design decisions. Claiming they didn’t have level and though going to experience points and skill unlocking was at the very least disingenuous. It’s leveling without putting a number to the level…but it’s still leveling.
Also the choice not to voice the main character made everything that happened to me a monologue. like I’m going through the game as a mute. Completely killed the game for me.
Agree about the level thing. Understand the criticism about not voice acting the character (even though I don’t think it is an issue).
But it has a complex build system (like GW1) and lots of innovations for a MMO, which makes it a great game for my personal taste. Everything I wanted to see in GW2 concerning build and item system is in TSW. And none of it is in GW2. If you could add some ramdomness to loot system (like GW1 max q7s and stuff like that) it would be the game of my dreams.
Btw: I still hope to see improvements in GW. Stuff that was promised by devs, like getting “elite” skills by killing bosses and stuff like that. I hope to see content that makes me want to explore the game. I want GW2 to make me want to hunt champions (not loot that I can purchase on AH, but fun stuff like GW1 elite capturing).
I get the whole thing with the build system…but a build system does not a game make. It’s one aspect of a game. An important one for some people, but it shouldn’t override everything else either.
My problem is even though I liked the longer quests in TSW and I liked the voice acting and direction….I hated the way the combat felt…it felt far too repetitive. There wasn’t enough variety for me.
I just want to remind folks again, the features and content you’d traditionally find in an expansion will absolutely be added to Gw2. The thing we haven’t decided is what form the release of that content would be presented in, be it a traditional expansion, living world, or some other form.
Can you list the features that you think we’re expecting? Will Living Story add new races, new classes, zones, entire new personal campaigns? The track record isn’t that bright so far.
He doesn’t have to list it since the information about this stuff was in his blog post.
The teams working on the living story are NOT the teams working on longer term content. New zones…new races, perhaps even a new profession (which would be a heavy profession if they made one).
The four living story teams are quite apart from the other developers working on content. The decision on how to release the bigger content patches has not been made yet, but they’re thinking about releasing it through the living story mechanism when those things are done.
Point here is Anet promised to make a game they never delivered. They promise something new, creative, different and blablabla. They delivered a generic MMO.
This is as much I think player overexpectation as anything else.
My expectations were based on GW1, which was a great and innovative game.
Currently Wildstar, Elder Scrolls Online and, particularly recently, EQNext are getting that treatement.
I’m not expecting much of those. I had great expectations about The Repopulation, but now I have my doubts if it will be that good.
Almost without fail I can be certain that people will be accusing them of being boring, stupid and generic within a year of their release.
I can accuse them right now. None of them seems to be innovative. All of them seem generic to me.
I think GW2 has done pretty well for itself. Then again I generally dont expect to much from a game before I play it. Its certianly has a different feel to most of the other MMOs Ive played.
It is a decent generic MMO. Better than the other generic MMOs. Worse than TSW. If TSW didn’t lack content, I wouldn’t even bother playing GW2. But since it doesn’t have a lot of content, I have time to play GW2 and other games.
The only problem I had with the overflow was on the final phase. My regular server finished the event and I used the waypoint to get closer to one of the invasions. It put me back on my regular server. I was kitten ed.
That’s easy to avoid though because you will get the pop up to return to your regular server. Just don’t waypoint after that. Sucks, but what are you going to do?
I haven’t had this happen. I’ve gotten the pop up, selected leave queue, and when I teleported at the end, I ended up on the same server I am.
It might only happen if you click re-enter queue.
I’ve done this several times during the event already.
Regardless of what you call it, my point was Anet won’t be doing that, because they don’t want to divide the player base. It’s not going to happen. What they will release is expansions more along the lines of Eye of the North, so that’s what you’d have to compare the new expansions to, not full games.
We can argue about the word, but the word isn’t really what I’m talking about. I’m talking about Anet making a statement to excludes that type of expansion (if you still want to use the word) from consideration.
I disagree with that. Anet have said that it’s unlikely, but I am sure they are keeping their options open. Unlikely doesn’t mean never ever no way. It means they will try other things first.
Our little side-discussion might be a little misleading; they might release a traditional expansion like WoW’s Mists of Pandaria, but they’ll never release a stand-alone campaign in the vein of Factions or Nightfall.
Right, that’s what I’m saying…because that’s what Anet has said.
This is one of the simplest MMO’s on the market… you can literally hold down W while spamming 1 and F and win the game. There are no roles to fill, no complex mechanics, no need to do much of anything.
Heck I met a warrior the other day who had T3 armor and 2 legendary weapons and a commander tag and he had no idea that you could dodge in this game. It just simply isn’t needed for a warrior. there is nothing a warrior can’t beat by hitting 1 and 2 and just standing there.
I assume you’re not talking about some of the champions or Lupi, or Subject Alpha.
