Thanks everyone for the input!!
So, it really comes down to two possible choices then… Ruby Orbs Vs. Lyssa runes.
What do you guys think about the two in comparison to each other?I’ve seen a lot of people saying good things about Lyssa, but not much comparison~
It’s simple. Ruby Orbs give you more damage, so if that’s all you’re after, go for that. Lyssa gives a lot more precision but no power or crit damage, so that’s what you lose in exchange for all the utility Lyssa gives. The strong points of Lyssa are the condition cleanse and the extra boons.
Lyssa is almost like having 20% boon duration on Signet of Rage, and SoR is the main reason you go for boon duration in the first place (unless you’re running Sonic Boon). Add FGJ and you get perma-fury, after all Fury is the boon you really want all the time, you can live without swiftness and some Might stacks for a while. Once you let go of the Tactics line Lyssa runes allow you to keep some of it’s benefits.
Runes of Lyssa are a Warrior’s best friend.
It’s hard to come up with different builds since Ranger traits make no sense and many are underwhelming or are related to bad utilities.
LoL. You put 20 points in Strength for Axe Mastery instead of getting the last 10 points in Discipline, do the math. In my experience optimal traits for Axe mainhand are 10-30-0-0-30, you get two traits giving you extra adrenaline on crit and the lower Burst recharge time and you can spam Eviscerate on an 8s cooldown, that’s the best DPS you can get out of the Axe imo. Also, Axe off-hand sucks, get a Mace.
I took the advice of most of the posts in this thread and rerolled even though it’s going to take me ages to level (too broke to level through crafting). Anyone got any fast leveling tips? Made a guardian and even at lvl 15 I’m seeing how much more useful it is than ranger and how selfish and weak of a class ranger really is, brings literally nothing to groups. Which is sad because he’s been my main since the head start and fully geared up, what a waste.
Try to follow the personal story quests and close the gap of level requirements by completing map areas. Level 20+ you can be decent in WvW and running with the zergs racks up experience fast. Around level 50+ you should considering jumping to 80 through crafting. Jeweler (up to 375), Cooking and Artificer are really cheap to level, and once you reach level 70 you should choose one crafting profession that you actually want to use and level it to 400 for the last ten levels. Each crafting profession from 1 to 400 yields ~10 levels worth of experience, and with a Crafting Booster it can go up to ~15.
Actually there were times in history where both, bows of any form and guns, were used.
Medieval pistols and rifles had horrible accuracy and reload times so just because they developed guns this doen’t mean bows cannot be more efficient.
Crossbows have better accuracy but still abyssmal reload times. I didn’t say anything about other bows being bad with guns around. But yeah, I get the fantasy settting so I guess rapid-firing crossbows would indeed be freaking cool.
A lot of people chose ranger to be an archer sniper and got stuck with crap DPS because reasons.
Why don’t we have crossbows? Because the game world already developed guns and only keeps bow around for the better effective range and the modified arrows. Crossbows are just sub-par pistols.
Weird that the best guilds run mainly warrior/guardian specs with some eles, mesmers and necros
Warrior is great in WvW, one of the stronger classes. PvP is an other story…
WvW Warriors running within an organized guild are a different story precisely because the team is covering it’s weaknesses. Just like in a dungeon, the only reason you can stay in melee dealing high DPS is because the Guardian beside you is keeping you alive. PUG WvW Warriors on the other hand have a really hard time when roaming solo or with a poorly organized group.
What do people mean by “building right” a Ranger? I love theory crafting and coming with builds but Ranger traits are such a contradictory mess that I get a headache everytime I try to come up with something new. Don’t try to blame the player, t’s just badly designed in that regard.
I made mine around what went well with the guild armor chest piece. So I have the hood on the head, Duelist shoulders and gloves, Whispers pants and T3 Human boots. I look pretty cool and the colors match up well.
Glass cannon warrior, perhaps? A little toughness goes a long way.
Doesn’t solve the vulnerability to movement impairing conditions. It’s a bit like Mesmers who are kinda forced to use runes of Centaur or Air to get decent movement speed, Warrior can laugh at conditions with Soldier runes and Shout utilities, but it takes it’s toll.
I’ve already decided that a month from now, I’ll gauge player skill as inversely proportional to WXP rank. I have a Commander Warrior, a scout-built Thief and like playing other alts too. “Legend” you say? I say obvious zergling with no WvW know-how.
I see excuses Venereus on why we’re supposedly not good. But have you ever just said “To hell with what other people think!” and just play the class for fun? You’ll see a lot more enjoyment out of it, as of right now you seem like somebody who cares about what other people think more than just playing the class.
Reality is a bit of a bubble burster isn’t it?
One can still enjoy the class and continue playing while admitting it is subpar in dungeons.
It’s possible.
I know, that’s why I still take it for a spin when some guildies need someone for a low level fractal or something. I coudn’t care less about what other people think, I just care too much about my fellow man to bring a Ranger to a hard dungeon, since I don’t like that being done to me. If I’m doing a high level fractal run and you bring a Ranger to my party you’re blatantly disrespecting me or don’t know better, either way I don’t want you in my group, pugs are already bad as it is.
Thing is, you do less dps with ONLY axe/mace. If you wanna maximize your dps you should use gs for HB -> whirlwind -> swap to axe -> 6 normal attacks -> swap back to gs for HB.
If you are traited for axe, there is no point in switching to GS for 100B. A traited axe does far more DPS than an untraited 100B.
It’s true, with both traits that grant extra adrenaline on crits and the Burst skill recharge trait you can use a fully charged Eviscerate every 8 seconds. Beat that 100b noobs!
100b noobs?Yea k whatever, do a dps test then <.< try it on a veteran risen giant, kill it UNDER 15 sec with axe/mace then tell me what does more dps.
Looks like some people can’t take a joke. Anyway, this thread is about dungeons where Warriors are expected to bring sustained DPS, so try again.
Runes of the Centaur/Runes of the Air + Mirror. Add boon duration as desired. There goes your movement problem.
the World vs World map its a mighty battle of pets and arrows flying everywhere.
Last time I saw that it didn’t go too well:

“1v1 wvw”
All I saw.
This. 1v1 in WvW is the most inconsequential type of fight in the entire game, but it’s the only instance where the single-target focused Ranger profession can shine. It’s really sad that those 1v1s usually turn into 1v2+ and as soon as it goes beyond 1v1 we’re back to every other profession being better suited to the content at hand.
The perfect answer. I’ve been playing a Ranger since Guild Wars 1, and they’ve pretty much always sucked at everything. I was hoping Guild Wars 2 would bring massive improvements to the Ranger class, but it looks like that’s not going to happen. 4+ years in Guild Wars and I’m about ready to go back to WoW because they know how to balance classes. Anyway, like others have stated, reroll to a Guardian or a Warrior. They get improved frequently and outdo Rangers in pretty much every aspect. Not to mention, their survivability is around 3 times as better than a Ranger’s.
The bolded makes me laugh so hard. Those classes can outdo Rangers in Condition Damage? I think not. Also, survivability? I was in WvW and fought two warriors by myself. I took out one and was halfway done with the other when I got taken down by him. And the guardians…oh dear god how sad I’ve felt fighting them, just due to how fast their HP has been burned through. If they’re the top, then I weep for the meta. Not to mention the only times I got wiped 1v1 were against a thief (who really knew what he was doing), and…wait, that’s it. No other class I 1v1’d tonight was able to take me out at all, and with the exceptions of Necro and Engineer (made me sad that I didn’t see a single one in WvW), I wiped them all out (save for the thief who knew what he was doing, of course).
Yes, you can build a good duelist for WvW, but Thieves and D/D eles are still better roamers and apply superior burst damage like roamers should, since a lengthly skirmish is fun PvP but bad WvW gameplay. A good WvW roamer isn’t the one getting lots of kills by fighting all those upleveled and unskilled players you can’t find in tPvP, it’s the one doing things that actually give points, while minimizing the time spent traveling to the next objective that will give points by quickly disposing of any enemy they encounter (and choose to fight) before the proverbial zerg shows up to ruin your plans.
Rangers are still outperformed by any other profession in dungeons, especially if they go for direct damage, and since going condition is ill-advised due to the shared bleed cap, crappy direct damage is what you should build for. Even if you went for condition damage and were the only condition dealer in the party, you’re just a bad Necro. A Necro would also have better condition damage since they don’t need to invest 30 points in a traitline that gives Precision and Crit dmg to reach consistent condition application, on top of being way tankier than the Ranger and the pet combined.

Guardians shouldn’t be on the top of the wall while defending a keep, and if they are there it’s to support and protect their teammates, not to fire ranged attacks. What they should do is stand behind the gate and attack with AoE, especially Staff auto-attack, while throwing some Lines of Warding to push the ram operator off it. Some Shields of Absorption and a few well placed Walls of Reflection greatly improve the gate’s resistance.
While attacking a keep you should do what all melee focused builds should and cover the rear to catch reinforcements trying to get inside. You should also support and protect your teammates as usual.
I suggest you refresh your comeback with your Guardian. The Ranger will make you quit for good.
I came up with a Mace/Mace build based on “Distracting Strikes” with 100% Condition Duration (can’t be done in sPvP, only WvW). Lots of CC lockdown with 8s Immobilize from Bolas and all the interrupts provided by Mace/Mace, each applying 3 stacks of Confusion for 10 seconds. It’s awesome in 1v1 since half the time the enemy is CC’d and the other half they’re getting punished for attacking. On top of that most people get real life confusion from facing such an obscure build.
Id be very interested for more breakdown, this sounds like a fun build

100b is still the king of DPS so use it whenever you can afford to channel the full duration. For high level fractals I switched to Axe/Mace so I can move around while attacking (the Vulnerability stacks are great support too, especially against bosses). Against most fractal bosses standing still is going to get you killed, and it’s bad enough that at melee range it’s harder to dodge most projectile attacks (not enough distance to see them coming), some of wich are quite powerful in FotM.

It’s easy to test, just make sure that the trait is giving you the last crit chance you need to get to 100% (assuming all the other sources have already been confirmed to work).
I’ve used Bolas to burst with 100b in WvW for a while now since that frees up more utility slots (no Frenzy means no Endure Pain to cover Frenzy and no Bullrush since 2 seconds CC only works with quickness). I didn’t even charge in with Bullrush, I instead run up to them normally and try to use Bolas at melee range so they couldn’t easily see it and dodge it. However, 4 seconds is plenty of time for a decent player to remove the CC and escape, and if that’s not an option they can also pop other counters, like a Protection boon, a blocking skill, or even their heal. On the other hand, Bolas’ short cd allows you to try again during the fight and being immobilized while having a 100b in your face does panic some people so they don’t always react.
Reminds me of the time a pug in Fractals told me Axe/Mace was bad for Fractals and that Greasword was better. I was like, wtf, do you even FotM?
Your guild should definitely consider Yak’s Bend. We have a pretty good leadership as both a community and a fighting force on the WvW field, and the server is really friendly in general. More WvW dedicated guilds like yours are exactly what we need to keep going up in tiers like we’ve been doing for the past month, so please consider joining us, I’m sure we would both benefit.
Yakhammers is an alliance guild project designed to strengthen Yak’s Bend presence in WvW by gathering and organizing small guilds and unaffiliated players under one banner for shared Influence (mainly from attendance checks, so no need to represent or be very active). Due to the way the project works, all kinds of players are welcomed, from hardcore to casual, from dedicated WvW fighters to PvE players.
More details about the project and how to join can be found here:

Hello!
I’m Venereus and I’m the founder of Aequinoctium (latin for equinox), a small casual guild themed after the four seasons of the year and the forces of nature (ranks are based on the seasons, the four elements, the Moon and the Sun). We mainly play PvE and WvW, but we also do Dungeon runs and sPvP sometimes if you’re interested in those.
The three founding members are from South America (GMT-4) and we speak both english and spanish, so if you’re a spanish speaker looking for a nice helpful guild to join, we might just be what you need (english speakers are of course welcomed too). We’re looking to grow by recruiting new members from any part fo the world and eventually become a known force in our server (Henge of Denravi).
If any of this catches your fancy, post a reply here, send me a message or contact me in-game (I’m “Venereus” there too) and we’ll send you an invite.
Good luck and have fun!

I run a small guild in HoD. Me and the co-leader are from SA so we usually play during those hours. Let me know if you’re interested.
