Rangers is good in sPvP and great at open world PvE and WvW roaming, but sucks hard in dungeons and fractals.
Guardians are balanced, it’s the other professions who are UP.
Rangers are fine with a dueling build while roaming, but roaming is only good for those 1vX that you’ll win from time to time when you’re not being steamrolled by a passing zerg. It’s doesn’t help your server win much either, but it’s your game so roam if you want. Other than that Rangers are still outperformed by other professions in any other role, so do your server a favor and bring something else.
Check the tiers here: http://mos.millenium.org/matchups#NA
You don’t yet understand the game if you ask that question. Come up with a build for WvW first, once that’s done choosing the appropiate gear will be easy.
I pug most of my fractal runs, why would I waste my time on a game if I don’t have to?
Don’t nerf your server, don’t bring a Ranger to WvW.
Other specs and professions simply didn’t use PI or any other racial skill because they actually have good profession utilities. Now Rangers are limited to signets, wich is kinda good since now I only have to micro the pet and can mostly forget about the utility skills.
That’s what I used to do before giving up on the class. Thief does it better in my experience.
Next patch is a few days away, if that patch doesn’t fix Ranger up to a decent state then only the most stubborn and delusional will continue to hold on to the class. Wait for that patch, check the forums for a few days and then decide.
Warriors aren’t the current FotM in WvW, DD eles are, since they still haven’t been nerfed. If you’re noticing more Warriors it might be because the 100b roamers switched to Hammer zergbusters after the quickness change.
We’re discussing epistemology now? Guys, it’s really simple: play a lvl 80 Ranger, then play a tier 1 profession and see the light.
It doesn’t take a billion gold, get ascended trinkets and then you’ll only spend gold on crafting the weapons and armor, and karka shells aren’t that expensive.
Nicely done. Anything that makes rangers cheaper to use is welcomed, they’re already high maintenance with all the psychological damage they inflict on the player.
I never used berserker stance when you compare it to signet of fury signet of fury is better since it gives you a passive at least.
Balance stance is awesome kind of a oh crap button. I use it more defensively when I know cc is coming and I need a guaranteed heal to pop.
Fixed it for you. Also, the trait version of Berserker Stance has nice synergy with Signet of Rage and Lyssa Runes, but very few builds put 30 points in Strength and rarely do it for that trait, but it’s something.
The OP plays a Ranger. The queue did his server a favor, he should be grateful.
I usually /bow at the end of each fight if I can afford it (as in, I have no more enemies incoming), it’s the official stance of the Yak’s Bend Alliance that we don’t perform humilliating emotes. The only time I ever /danced was after winning a 2v3, they deserved it for being so bad and losing with an extra guy.
Most DD eles I encounter in WvW (on any class) jump in against the odds and if they start losing they run away and become impossible to catch. The guy that lost against that ranger was just horrible.
Every class can be awesome if the player can actually play that class.
That’s a fact. Some People seem to think that in GW2- there are strict roles to a class such as : Tank/Support ect – And there isn’t. That’s where many people mess up.
Anyone who thinks a Ranger/ Engineer/ Elementalist or w/e other class is a weak class, it’s because they’re some close-minded baffoon who doesn’t know how to make a build that works.
I do happen to run into alot of ‘casual’ players that just go by some guide, not actually knowing what this trait does, or the correct use of this skill- so they’re a liability.
If anything, Rangers are overpowered. That is, if you know how to play one correctly.
Most of the naysayers in this forums have actually spend many an hour trying to come up with functional ranger builds, only to realize there’s too much badly designed underpowered class in the way. In the end every ranger build has a version in another class that does the same job better (assuming equal player skill of course).
Any links for the builds? And what build would you recommend me to use when I hit 80 with 1 or 2 exotic parts?
There are entire threads dedicted to the one or two viable Ranger builds in existence, just look them up. Also, you should delay your purchase of exotics, chances are that after a while of lvl 80 Ranger gameplay you’ll notice the unavoidable flaws and reroll.
Well, for WvW if you’re looking to Thief and Ranger you’re basically asking for a roamer. In that case just pick the Thief, and yes, you can go power-crit with Shortbow, it’s actually easier to use the Thief shortbow for direct damage than condition. For open world PvE the Ranger is a better choice, but the Thief will do fine so it’s not a deal breaker. For dungeons the Thief is better, unless you’re bad at avoiding damage and end up spending so much time on the floor that a Ranger would do more damage than you just because he stays alive longer, but that’s hardly possible.
lol high damage? reroll
My pet crits for over 1k+ in WvW and I’m only lvl 53 that’s alot and I’m sure it will be higher when I’m 80
Your pet is lvl 80 in WvW and pets don’t scale with your stats. Just use a feline to get over 2k crits and then you’ll be on par with normal auto-attack crits from any other power-crit built profession whenever (if) your pets manages to hit something.
First things first, PvP/PvE/WvW?
Robert is already drinking too much, he thinks Ranger have decent DPS in dungeons because he’s seeing the damage numbers twice.
JP on next patch:
“So I was testing the popular signet Warrior build (our metrics clearly show that a vast majority of Warrior players run this build, so it must be really strong) and I noticed it was really overpowered, so now the Deep Strike trait will give you a flat increase of 1% critical chance per signet. This is one of the trait changes that we’ve been hyping and is definitely all this profession needed for now. Also I’m nerfing Rangers traps because they owned me way too hard in sPvP (obviously it wasn’t my signet build, they’re OP), surely they have other viable sPvP specs they can turn to.”
Just check this and decide:

Have you noticed how in a dungeon you can dish out tons of damage and the only reason you’re not dead in melee range is because there’s a Guardian spamming boons beside you? Yeah…
- Power is 2181 without Oil, 2388 with.
- Toughness equates to 42.14% damage mitigation.
- Max HP is 26,062
- You take 25% less damage w/ Barkskin when you have 6,515 hp or less.
- +10% damage when endurance is full
- +5% greatsword damage
- +5% damage when you have a boon
- -65% condition duration on you thanks to runes and food
- -25% stun duration on you
Conditions are going to slide off you. You’re very tanky. You’re very mobile. And you hit reliably hard without depending on the RNG garbage that is crit chance. Couple this with the innate evasion the greatsword auto-attack chain has and you have one serious beast of a Ranger … and he has a pet.
I’ve been running this is sPvP where I don’t have the -65% condition duration from food (only -25%) and the extra power from oils and it is still deadly. You’re quite hard to pin down too, despite the lack of food. You won’t burst people down, but you’ll continue to hit them hard and they will go down.
I was facing Guardians down with this puppy.
SB?
Utility setup?
Pets?
Did you try to gradually add in some DPS gear, say zerger or Knight? Zerger weapons for example then some Trinkets?
I think you’re missing the point, the pet is the weapon, the Ranger is the meat shield, no need to dilude the tankiness for the Ranger’s own damage.
Rangers are the real leeches in dungeons.
There’s nothing a Ranger can do than isn’t outperformed by another class. As long as that’s the case Rangers will be bad.
You do realize that a pug zerg has the combined IQ of a fly, right?
According to this data: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Critical_hit#Table
Option 1 deals more sustained damage.
This again?
- No in game accomplishment equals a good Commander.
- A Commander icon is designed to be a group’s tool.
- The resource more suited to be raised by a group effort is coin.
Kill Shots and Soldier’s gear don’t go well together.
I actually read this thread, unlike others.
I agree with a lot of your points, however, burst on the warrior is ridiculous; THE PROBLEM WITH IT IS THE FACT THAT IS CAN BE DODGED/BLOCKED WAY TOO EASILY.
Any bad PvPer that doesn’t dodge/block my frenzy 100b takes up to 16k crits from my build at the end. That’s ridiculous. The problem is 90% of the time the 100b doesn’t finish because it’s dodged out of, evaded, blocked, etc.
Try Shield Bash + Eviscerate.
This is dumb. Fractal skins are awful and the only reason people want them is because they’re hard to get, change that and there goes the point of getting them.
I totally recommend taking Unsuspecting Foe or anything else you need to make sure your Bursts have 100% crit chance. Spare yourself the disappointment of a non-crit Eviscerate.
Thief is WAY ahead of engineer and necromancer, wtf. Thief is amazing in fractals, especially the dredge and harpy ones with shadow refuge and projectile destruction.
He even contends for the ele’s spots, since by fractal 40+ you better know how to avoid damage instead of relying on eles and guardians to heal your screwups. And thieves/warriors/mesmers do more aoe damage than eles with melee cleaving.
I know that, I’ve ran Thief on fractals too. But the truth of the matter is that most pugs thieves are glass cannons who don’t even know they have other utilities beside Signet of Shadows and stealths. And the utilities they bring are also available to Guardians and Mesmers, so why risk it?
Traiting longbow also makes the auto attack a projectile finisher (2 actually) 100% of the time. playing smart with fields you can be inflicting conditions on the bad guys or removing them from the good ones, stealing health, and all other kinds of nifty things.
this,
also stronger bowstrings its a must.
because without it you can’t defend keeps, your arrows will not reach targets when you stand on the wall above.
This. It’s also the only time I miss my ranger when on my thief.
This mentality is why I’m never allowing MF’ers in my party.
Oh come on, I’m sure most of us would take a MF geared player over a bad noob any day. You just like to pick on MF cuz you can spot them with gear pings. If you could as easily identify baddies you’d do that instead.
Actually for skilled players the higher level Fractals are a blast. It’s just that when building groups, we will not take Rangers because they reduce the chance of success.
Out of curiosity, are Rangers the only class you won’t take on these Fractal runs, or are there others as well? What are the usual compositions of your groups?
For high level fractals the hierarchy goes like this: Guardian > Mesmer > Warrior > Elementalist > Engineer > Necromancer > Thief > Ranger. I’m not so sure about the Engi, Necro, Thief part, those three I might switch around a bit.
If anything bow is great just for badge farming for invader/or whatever gear.
Wich is also why you should use Explorer gear instead of Berserker, you’re pretty much farming so why not?
I have both Berserker and Explorer gear on my Warrior. The difference is around 300 power and ~75% critical damage, precision remains the same. I’m a glass cannon on both sets, so the only difference is the decreased damage, meaning the run might go a little slower. But then again whenever a dungeon run takes longer than it should is usually because one or more players in the party are bad/inexperienced and fail at performing the necessary task to beat the dungeon’s mechanics, like in the arm seals at the Colossus fractal, someone kills the chanter you shouldn’t kill and there goes an hour of your life trying to do that part the hard way. Seriously, if I’m a leech on my MF gear then what’s a Ranger?
Fotm is unique in that exotic karma armor can drop. These items are account bound and you won’t see this in other parts of the game. Regular exotics, however, are the same and can be traded.
They can also have stats otherwise unavailable on exotic armor, like Wayfarer and Cavalier.
All kidding aside, well-built/well-played rangers on our server kick kitten solo and in small to mid size group skirmishes. Maximizing our contribution in large zergs requires some very specific skills, but I don’t know that thieves, for example, are any better in this situation.
Let me enlighten you: Shadow step into enemy zerg, Daggerstorm, Shadow return when health too low. After that Thief Shortbow has more AoE than both Ranger bows.
I won’t lie, BM tanks and Trappers are good WvW duelists just like they are in sPvP, but WvW duels are pointless, literally, they don’t win WvW because they give no points and hardly matter in the greater scheme of things. It’s nice for your e-rep but that’s it. It gets worse once you realize thieves and eles can duel just as well but kill faster, therefore allowing them to move to an important objective sooner, while reducing the chances of enemy reinforcements showing up before the duel is over.
And once you move up from solo roaming to small to mid size groups you’re back to the Dungeon Ranger Dilemma: any other class will outperform you, no matter how well you play.
You gotta have the pet on passive for the swap+Fear to work, otherwise the wolf will attempt his knockdown first and delay the F2 skill, getting you killed.
Sure, stat-wise the burst damage from the line is negligible, but Discipline also has some pretty cool and useful traits that are hard to pass on.
Please stop perpetrating this school of thought, it’s completely ridiculous that warrior has a functionally absolutely useless class-specific stat. It’s not like the other classes don’t get “pretty cool and useful traits that are hard to pass on” in their last traitline.
Every other class benefits immensely from their class-specific stat, why is warrior the only one whose stat does absolutely nothing ~7months into the game?
Not to mention how “Burst damage increase” doesn’t even do anything for 6/9 warrior burst skills since the only burst skills which point is to do damage are Kill Shot, Eviscerate, and Forceful Shot.
And before some PvE warrior says “b-but the crit damage increase in the trait line is already so good!” No. Let’s look at what the other classes get together with their 30% crit damage taking that they invested 30 points into their line:
Elementalists, Ranger and Thief: 300 Precision
Guardian: 300 Toughness
Necromancer: 30% Death Shroud HP
Engineer: -30% on Toolbelt Skill Recharge
Mesmer -30% on Shatter Recharge
and finally we have Warrior:
Warrior: +3% Burst Damage Increase.
I quoted a guy who said Discipline was 100% useless, that’s simply untrue because those utility traits are really good, and btw that’s not the case with all the other classes. I also said the Burst stat was negligible, so yours is the school of thought I’m actually perpetrating, but please don’t let reality get in the way of your forum crusade.
Also guys please, everyone is tired of this kind of threads?
“Rangers are bad, they do 0 dmg and their pets never hit”
Anything that lowers the chances of having rangers in my groups is a good thing.
Actually what matters most is the skill of the player. That being said, most people who actively use ranger are noobs cos anyone with half a brain would have re-rolled another class long ago.
inb4 “No! Its you who is doing something wrong!”
inb4 “Want a duel with my ranger?”
inb4 “My spirits are awesome wut are you tawking about”
inb4 “Im no noob, I can tank TA with my ranger”
You forgot “nobody else can DPS from the safety of 1500 range”
