I have said it before and will reiterate, this game makes even Perfect World games blush with embarrassment over how grindy it is. I have played several games made by that company, and while I probably won’t ever bother again, they were not nearly as grindy as gw2 is.

I hate when people say “grind” about guild wars 2. “Grind” is repeating the same task over and over without change to get a single goal. Guild Wars 2 gives you options as to how you want to play. It’s your own choice to grind.

The game is casual for the most part. You can get full exotics and not log in for months, log in for some WvW play later on and not be less effective against other players. Granted, ascended gear does give an 8% stat boost, but it’s not enough to actually make a huge difference. They did just as they have done in GW1, where it’s easy to hit high level and max out your gear, but the hardcore aspect involved is getting those aesthetic things, just like it was in Guild Wars 1. To me, it sounds like to want these things but lack the drive to farm for them. Legendary weapons aren’t supposed to be easy and I do in fact feel very accomplished being the proud owner of a Kudzu. Hardcore players will always look better than casuals in any game due to their drive to do so. It’s not the philosophy of the game to make everyone look good, it’s the philosophy to make everyone on equal playing grounds stat-wise. Cosmetics are there for hardcore progression and to keep the casual players slowly working toward something.

This is the exact reason warriors can’t tank, and you only see viable builds involving some sort of DPS and/or condition stats. We only have one heal on a very slow cooldown, cannot give ourselves protection without there being some randomness factor, and we only have 2 condition removals, one of which is a heal. Our class isn’t built to last long fights like these above mentioned classes. I do think you’re forgetting heal-based guardians as well.

All in all, my biggest point is that in that minute that those other classes are able to heal for that amount and a warrior is not, our only option is damage or die. Build variety, people.

Every class gets only “one” heal UNLESS they build for more. Warriors can build for more. There is a trait that lets shouts heal. There you go 3 more heals for you.

Shout heal builds were THE tanking builds for warriors until the shout nerf. Now we don’t have that as a viable build option.

Hey guys, Ferrum here.

I’m looking to join a semi-serious to serious team who is willing to let a warrior into their ranks. I know that most people absolutely hate warriors having anythign to do with PvP, but I’m not the stereotypical full zerker GS warrior that everyone hates. I play a DPS/Condition hybrid, and so far I have a 5:1 W/L ratio with my warrior. If need be, I can play on my thief (condition spec, not high burst) but I’m really looking for a team that will appreciate me as a warrior.

If interested just send me a message or whisper me in game on Ferrum Blacktide. I’ll let you know what team(s) I’ve been in and discuss how we’ll go about my initiation into your team.

Fingers crossed,

I should probably update this with the form <.<

Why do you hate Warriors?

in PvP

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

I main a warrior, and although my w/l ratio is almost 2:1, I run my thief in tPvP more often due to the constant hate that we warriors get. Personally, I hate most warriors and get why others do, and it’s as simple as the fact that 98% of all warriors run the same full zerker greatsword/x setup and rely on some sort of stun and 100b to take people down, then make some smug remark when they do as if they think that they’re better than everyone else when 4/5 fifths of the match you’ve taken them down without a problem.

I run a longbow/axe+axe DPS/condition hybrid on my warrior and still get those hate messages almost every time I kill someone in tPvP, or get told to play a class that requires skill. When warriors start playing smart and quit acting elitist simply because they can own anything in PvE, I’ll respect them. Even for me, someone who’s mained a warrior since the 3-day head start, I’ve only found respect for 4 warriors I’ve ever met, only one of which uses a greatsword at all. It’s not warriors that suck, only those who use a widely overused cookie-cutter min-max build that fails every time if its rotation is interrupted in any way.

I hope my point is clear enough. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way. It takes a lot of skill to effectively play a warrior in any type of PvP. Most warriors don’t have about face, sheath weapons, or even look-behind key bound; all of which key bindings aren’t even warrior-specific, but things that any skilled player will have and use regularly.

Play smart, don’t use the same one-trick kill rotation every time, because 3 out of 4 times it won’t bring you anything but your own death. — my message to warriors.

Viking Jorun.5413

Hey guys, Ferrum here. I thought I’d take the time to post my Axe/Axe + Longbow build. I primarily run WvW and this DOES WORK, contrary to what most people say. This build does take quite the twitch skills to manage as it is mostly berserker, and lacks the in-and-out mobility of the greatsword.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIIQNAnXTjcO5uJPuQMxBEzjeYICijCqAAVKaj7A-j0yAYLioRCUyoRgEBIqAQyrIasFuioxquxUxCy64kawLiWNA-w

Let me know what you think. I included the cavalier gear specifically to help offset the DPS lost by the rabid upper trinkets and give the build a bit more toughness to boot. Additionally, the rabid ascended gear also helps maintain my condition damage at the 438 mark, which allows me to swap to bow in fights against bunkers and quickly melt them without sacrificing myself in melee.

Note that I do not play warrior in sPvP, since they’re still severely kitten against every other class. I prefer my condition thief for that environment.

EDIT: Fixed an error where I chose Sharpened Axes over Sweet Revenge. Link updated.

Discussion: Magic Find on Celestial stats

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Viking Jorun.5413

I’ve been running celestial jewels on my ranger in sPvP for some time now, and full celestial on my D/D ele to challenge myself. Celestial is great in sPvP, and it provides you with a wide array of stats you wouldn’t normally be able to get. My question is, the moment you step into PvE, why is there magic find tacked onto celestial trinkets? Do people actually use them for magic find? I’d much rather have a slight stat increase on the 4 main stats (power, precision, toughness, vitality) and have no magic find, but I’m not sure what the community thinks of magic find on celestial gear.

Ranger alternatives to the Mesmer portal

Viking Jorun.5413

Hey guys,

If you don’t remember, a while back ArenaNet was talking about adding features that would make mesmers not so “needed” for their portal functionality. Do you think rangers could supply this function in the game? My thoughts are this: add a new pet whos special ability is to burrow into the ground creating an entry hole, and the skill then turns into a secondary skill in which the creature burrows itself back up, creating the exit hole that functions exactly like the mesmer’s portal.

Tell us your ideas and discuss the possibilities.

Actually, I run a very unorthodox build and rarely die in sPvP and tPvP. The secret is learning to conserve your moves and use them at the right moment while using your autoattack to keep up the pressure and making sure to use weapons swapping to your advantage. I’ve played and done well with every thief build (albeit I haven’t tried s/d with the new ‘buff’, but I’d rather not jump on the bandwagon and it’s easy enough to counter), so saying that the class is obsolete is a far cry. Just today I was thanked by several ransoms that decided to join our dueling server for some great fights and out of the 3 consecutive hours of dueling, was only downed once. I’ve also found that playing and heavily researching the other classes helps counter them yourself, so to me this seems like a huge misunderstanding of not only your class but every other class as well.

Perhaps you’d like to link us your account screen to prove that you’re an experienced player whos explored every facet of the game including 100% map completion, all 3 Order storylines, obtained your legendary and ranked up in both sPvP and WvW? Nope, definitely not. If you really didn’t like the huge amount of time you had for you to dodge that Magnet Pull there is nothing we can do for you.

Besides… I’m sure that if 100nades was strapped on a Warrior they wouldn’t even look at it, doesn’t feel like “Nobody’s supposed to burst for 24k damage” but rather “Hell no, Engineers shouldn’t do that much damage”.

If you’re referring to the amount of damage 100b does, you have to realize how hard it is to actually land the burst, much harder than it is to land pistol whip. The next best burst on warrior is the axe’s eviscerate burst which deals 12k to the squishiest of targets. I’m not sure if you know but warriors are the most kitten right now in terms of sPvP, and against a skilled player there’s not much you can do but survive and hope a friend comes along to finish said player off for you. I play my thief in sPvP because of this and honstly I’m waiting on the warrior buff so that I can go back to playing the class I love in sPvP and tPvP. (Don’t get me wrong, I love thief in sPvP and won’t even trade my guardian for it, but warriors are far from OP, which is what you’re inferring.)

Why Is Leveling Experience *So* Inconsistent?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sad to say, but certain classes just take longer to level than others. I have an 80 warrior, mesmer a guardian and I can tell you hands gown, the warrior was definitely the easiest. I’m currently leveling a thief and honestly I’ve been far more enjoying leveling with sword/pistol than the standard dagger/dagger setup. You might try different setups. Leveling in this game isn’t about getting from point A to point B. that’s why there are PoI’s, Vistas and skill challenges. It’s the experience getting there. Enjoy leveling your class rather than grinding away to get to the eventual goal of 80.

As for my melee weapons I run dual axes. The mobility is far more than running a greatsword and the damage is on par, as well as being able to have multiple sigils. (Accuracy and Rage)

How, may I ask, does dual axes provide more mobility? Sure, you have the gap closer in Eviscerate, but that’s it. And you can’t use it as an escape skill really because it barely goes anywhere and has a recoil.

It’s not more mobile than having a warhorn or a sword leap, but you’ve got a cripple with a long duration and are able to stay on the move while you build adrenaline with Axe 5. It’s a lot more flexible than say, greatsword.

Thief nearing 80 - build suggestions?

in Thief

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

Hey guys,

TL;DR – I don’t like stereotypical or “cheaty” builds that require no skill. If you have a suggestion PLEASE post it! If you play a backstab thief, DP thief or flanking strikes thief (the three main thief build varieties) and you thoroughly enjoy it convince me why I should use said build. Thanks!

So I’ve been leveling my thief and from what I’ve researched, experienced and fought, I’m ready to pick a build. Problem is, I enjoy playing those “out there” builds as they provide more of a challenge and the thief tends to lack the build variety my other characters have.
For example, my warrior is a DPS/condition survivability build so that I can choose what play style is necessary for the fight. I hit hard and have a decent toughness which lets me stay alive long enough when facing tanky builds that rely on conditions to take them down.
My mesmer is a mantra build where I’m in full DPS gear but runes of the wurm and Valkyrie upgrades on the trinkets to give it good survivability as well as being traited to heal on mantra casting and cure a condition each time I heal, giving me a whopping 6 highly frequent condition removals. Most mesmers laugh and point at mantra mesmers, but I’ve found a nice sweet spot to settle into that provides the best of everything for me.
As for the thief, I don’t want to be the often hated D/D backstab thief, because to me it seems like the equivalent of the mindless greatsword zerker 100b warrior and requires little to no skill to use. The D/P black powder blind builds are just plain chesty since not even my mesmer can remove the blinds as quickly as they can be stacked. From what I’ve seen, flanking strike thieves are clunky and hard to maneuver, which pretty much sums up the thief’s build variety.
Please, if you have a good build you think would fit my unusual playstyle, let me know. If not, convince me as to why I should run one of the “cliche” builds.

Thanks guys!!

I actually hunt down high ranking people when I’m roaming solo. Recruits are generally a reckless glass cannons and are a lot less predictable. Good players who have higher ranks will generally be easier to fight since they aren’t all about bursting you down, and the fights are a lot more fun. Recruits get enough of this discrimination as is, so why make it harder on them? I only attack recruits if they are a thief, a warrior, try to follow me, or are wearing CoF gear (glass cannons, easy kills).

The Debate: Vitality vs Toughness

in Thief

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

stuff

I think you’re used to playing some other class than a thief. Toughness won’t do you any good as a thief because you need an inherently high vitality to be able to get the best of both worlds. Toughness is ignored by condition damage and if you’re facing a condition opponent you’ll find that you’re dead in 3 ticks, since most condition builds come close to hitting 4k condition damage per tick. Vitality is great against conditions because, well, you have more health. 4k hitting for 12k in 3 ticks survives a lot less than 4k hitting for 20k in 5 ticks. You have a significant amount of time to react compared to if you went with a toughness spec, like rabid gear. Vitality on a thief also has the greatest leeway before the returns for having it diminish. If you have 20k health and 916 toughness from full carrion gear you’ll take 10k from a 10k warrior eviscerate burst, ending up with 50% of your health. If you run full rabid gear and have 12k health with 1600 armor and a 10k eviscerate warrior bursts you, you’ll take 8k damage, reducing you to 33% of your health. You do the math. For thieves, vitality is the way to go. Toughness only has the greatest leeway of diminished returns when you have inherently high vitality, such as a warrior or a necro. Vitality works the opposite way. If you have inherently low vitality you’ll of course benefit from having more, whereas toughness is entirely situational in that matter. You argue that the O kitten tating opinion where you have “fact”, but I see no evidence or research behind your claims. I’ve done the math. I know what’s best for each class.

The thief and its gameplay - Your feedback [Merged]

in Thief

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

To be honest, I don’t main a thief. I thoroughly enjoy the class, but my heart lies with the warrior. I’m tired of all of these players complaining about how “OP” thieves are after they get 3-shotted by an experienced glass cannon D/D backstab thief. Back about a month after release I got tired of being ganked by thieves so I changed my build a bit to include longbow so that I had some AoE to lean on in the case that a thief decided to Mug + CnD + Backstab me. I created my own little bubble in the meta to counter a single build, and I think that’s one thing in GW2 that’s really missing. Thieves are fine where they are. The 4-second reveal doesn’t affect my rotations on my thief at all in PvE. The only thing I can complain about are the new stealth mechanics where ranged mobs will continue to shoot you after you’ve stealthed.

Going back to the people complaining about not being able to counter thieves, do what I did. Change your build. Create a shift in the meta just like what happened in GW1 when a build was dominating in the GvG arenas. Personally, since I’ve switched to longbow it’s now common for me to swap to my longbow when a thief stealths, use healing surge to fill my adrenaline if I’m not able to use my burst and then lay down a smoldering arrow at my feet. If a thief decides to backstab me they’ll have to stand in fire gaining stacks of burning, which they can’t remove because they’ve already used HiS to stealth for a longer duration. It’s sickening to see people attempt the same things over and over to try to counter thieves expecting a different result. Madness I tell you.

Best way to 1v1 a mesmer?

in Thief

Posted by: Viking Jorun.5413

Viking Jorun.5413

As a mesmer I run GS and sword/pistol, and the answerer (if that is his real name) knows what he (she?) is talking about. However, I run a mantra build so fighting me would be quite different than the standard burst mesmer.

1) I can heal through any burst. I have 6 heals that proc every 1.33 seconds on average and remove all condition each time one is activated, as well as heal me of course.

2) I you have no interrupts you may be out of luck as I can continue to chain mantras together as I cast more mantras to heal through whatever damage you do. I don’t even have to pretend to be a clone.

3) When fighting a mantra mesmer they give no warning when they heal, remove conditions, damage you, or stun you. Mantras cast instantly and there is no warning, so it’s a bit of a guessing game as to when you want to dodge. Keep them targeted and count how many mantras they have on their boon bar. They should have 3 of each, and after playing a mantra mesmer, I can tell you that the (extremely few) others I’ve fought have predictable patterns that you must learn along the way. In my personal experience most of my damage comes from my 3 charges of Mantra of Pain, which I can recharge in 3.25 seconds and heal myself while I use Mantra of Distraction to stun you, which has a 5-second cool down. Watch for Power Surge’s count to drop to zero and dodge, as this is a common rotation by mantra mesmers. I only use my actual heal when I recieve conditions that affect my movement, attack ability (confusion), or have a high damage per tick such as burning or large stacks of bleeding, all of which are removed completely when I heal. Use your short bow 3 to keep the cripple up. Once the mantra mesmer has no heal charges left it’s 13.25 seconds before they’re able to effectively heal through your bursts and conditions again.

4) Note that power surge can still damage you while in stealth significantly. Your stealth isn’t a safe haven when fighting a mantra mesmer, and I usually only have to switch to sword/pistol when a thief is running a tanky annoyance build where they continually go in and out of stealth using CnD.

5) Moa morph will ruin your day. Don’t let a mesmer stand still when an ominous noise begins to play.

Learn the terrain, then use it to your advantage. It’s as simple as that. I’d be furious if ArenaNet even clicked on this topic, regardless of whether it was for laughs or not. Fall damage makes this game anchored to reality in one of the biggest possible ways. If I jump off of a four story building chances are I’m going to make a nice paint job on the sidewalk, and I don’t see why this aspect should be removed from the game other than “it’s inconvenient”.

Any good player in WvW (which is what I assume you mean by PvP since legendaries aren’t attainable in sPvP) will run an axe/X and longbow build for the survivability and versitality, or a sword/warhorn for the mobility. In rare cases I’ve seen bleed warriors running dual swords in WvW, but those builds are quite tedious to master.

Greatsword / Axe + Warhorn. I don’t need range when I can operate siege and have an army full of people pew pewing all day long.

I run havoc all day long. Building up siege in most cases isn’t viable when we’re using hit-and-run tactics to deteriorate a zerg or troll keep defenders while the real zerg is elsewhere. There are a lot of situations where not having range will screw you over.

Probably because most mesmers run glamour builds which only work if your target is A) stupid, and/or has no condition removal. All it takes is to stop attacking and they have nothing on you. Personally I run a mantra mesmer, which must mesmers laugh at, but 12 heals, each of which procs a condition removal makes me laugh as well. Personally, mesmers are fine where they are. The fact that a lot of builds rely on the stupidity of other players doesn’t justify another nerf. Glamour builds – if you keep attacking, you’re dead. Shatter builds – if you melee the clones you’ve got a slew of conditions on you. The only type of build which doesn’t rely on how dumb players can be are mantra builds which ANet’s already discussed giving a buff to.

The difference between Need and Want

Actually as a hardcore WvW player I do NEED to spend all of this time doing these things. That 8% stat increase is significant enough to be the determining factor in a fight between myself and an equally skilled player. There’s been several times where one of my builds perfectly counters another and said fight turns into a never-ending battle. If I’m hitting 8% harder, or taking 8% less damage or have 8% more health the numbers keep going up, and that balanced fight tips in favor of me winning. I don’t know if the OP has ever played a game with a gear treadmill before, but essentially higher stats are a need if you’re in the competitive world.

If you truly think that your not “hardcore WvW player” as you put it because you should know its not about the one person its about the group in wvw. Your trying to turn WvW into a 1v1 pvp game and that will never work out in the open nature of wvw.

Or are you using that as an excuse why your losing in fights?

Add note
You getting full ascended gear not going to do any thing to stop your server from losing this week. (losing that major guild is going to very much dropped your power i am sry that it happened please do not take it out on not having the top gear i know a lot of FA wvwer do not have ascended level gear)

That major guild we lost was TL, the one in my signature. Ascended gear on one guy in WvW isn’t going to help the collective, and you’re right. However, if many people do as I’ve done and gather 6 ascended trinkets on top of their normal build, it adds to the collective. An entire zerg that’s 8% better than the enemy zerg is going to win, no contest.

So every one will zerg harder!!! I though it was WM that you guys lost hmmm odd. Any way i am tired trying to sell you this game (that you bought and play often) if you want to think Ascended gear going to make it all better once you get them think so no one can talk you out of it.

Oh you must be talking about WM’s recent split due to internal conflicts. Nobody’s really sure what went on in Kaineng to be honest xP

All I know is that when my small guild who all have 6 ascended trinkets run havoc we last a kitten long time against zergs. I’m nearly a glass cannon. This shouldn’t happen ._.

If you PvP,Bolt. If you PvE, sunrise/twilight. Simple.

Um… what?
Makes absolutely no sense.

This is implying that Sword is viable for PvP while GS is not 0_0

Just what ive “Heard” around the forums. I dont see many people suggesting GS in PvP, but i see more suggesting 1h. If not, nvm

GS is the go-to weapon for new players who think that GS/full zerker is the way to beat everyone.

Dear TC,

Thanks for the picnic truce while our guild leader was offline. He’s now officially furious that his entire guild started Kaineng on an RP-walk-in-WvW trend. TVB had fun. Until next time!

Could you use knights gear in the interim? (im still using them!)

Honestly while leveling I’d go with the power, power/precision, and only when you hit 80 should you get the cavalier gear. p/p/c gear is honestly the fastest to level with. You’re so limited in builds before 80 that it doesn’t matter up until then.

WvW Ultimate titles are the real legendaries in this game. They should put a badge on the character select page for them.

NO. BAD. I just finished my account badges

I swear to god though. If you go for Kudzu the RNG gods punch you in the mouth repeatedly. Everyone I know including myself has spent nearly twice the ectos/coins/skill points/karma on clovers than they should have according to the average amount required. I used 466 ectos on my 77 clovers alone. Not to mention the other 250 ectos required to complete the gift of fortune. Really, it was no cheaper than any of the lodestone legendaries due to this and I’m offended when people seem to think that it’s “one of the cheaper” legendaries.
