Bring Back Cooperative Missions: Why and How

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Considering the game was based around the solo player having their own personal story, they will not turn away from that after two years into it. By based around I mean advertised for years. Might happen in a future game though :/

They turned away from the personal story thing like… when the first patch hit. There’s been no continuation of the personal story. Living story has used some instances similar to personal story, but mostly content has been open world zerg zerg zerg, or temporary 5 man dungeons.

I would love to have missions in GW2. The fun was in how you could repeat them for higher rewards by accomplishing the special objectives, and how those objectives changed in hard mode. Finishing all of the special objectives for a campaign gave you a title.

Exactly why do GW2 players dislike the idea of mounts?
Is is because traditional MMOs have them and GW2 must be a special and unique snowflake?

There are many threads with many explanations of why we don’t want or need mounts. Rather than beat this dead horse yet again… Why don’t you go do a little reading?

I’m sad actually. Matt sounds like he is quitting for Wowstar, and I suspect WP is in denial about his enjoyment of GW2 at this point. He got himself stat-capped and is going so far out of his way to find things to do it’s ridiculous.

Not a bug. It’s there for the only reason to prevent you from selling different items at a faster rate.
Just another annoying restriction. It’s been there since release.

Nope, a dev recently confirmed it is a bug and that they are fixing it “soonish.” I’ll edit with source in a minute.

Edit: Here you go.

Unfortunately, “soonish” could mean anything from next week to next year. The devs are infamous for delaying and forgetting about these things.

Not that I’m some kind of mount supporter (yuck! right?), but I’m not sure all these “neigh”-sayers actually read OP’s idea… The game IS designed for weapons, and the only thing I can see about OP’s idea that would be difficult to implement is that mount models and animations might be a little more complex than the ones for regular weapons.

The animations would definitely be tough to get right, but there would also be the trouble of balancing all those new weapon skills. You’re talking about 40 new skills to balance against existing ones, all of which are supposed to create an entirely new style of “mobile” combat and gameplay into the world which was originally scaled and designed around pedestrians.

So again, NO.

It’s part of the list of items that were promised months ago that we haven’t seen. I have no idea what the delay could be, especially in this case where it’s a simple ui element option change that allows you to turn them off in the settings. Really not that hard to code according to my programmer friends.

But being an Engineer main, I’m seeing a pattern of delays to any concerns Engineers have on anything really.

I like to imagine that when that dev “promised” to do something about it, what he literally did was write a note on a kittentail napkin which he then set his drink on. The drink sweat dripped down and smeared the ink. The janitor threw the kittentail napkin away that night. The next day the dev looked around thinking “crap where did that note go… Oh well I’ll make a mental note.” and then he went home and watched sports center. By the end of the week he had forgotten all about it. Fast forward to today. The end.

If the lack of content sounds upsetting, please support expansions in one of the many threads!

Also don’t lose too much hope. They said season 2 of the living story will contain more permanent content. In fact the next release will give us a new zone in the maguuma jungle. Will it be Southsun 2.0? We shall see…

They made the golem mobile? The one that has turrets around it giving it buffs? Can you pull it to a corner and burn it down with Firey Exploit Sword? If so, I don’t see how this change was an improvement…

Yep, yep and nope: fiery rush is not an exploit, so your last question is invalid. But you can use fiery rush on it without a target and against a wall, yes.

Lol, well I call it Firey Exploit Sword as a joke. I took it from someone else who said it. It’s obviously really OP. As for improving boss encounters, they’ve basically turned the golem into another corner-stack-fest. Great for speed run farmers. Not so great for proper game design or fun/challenging gameplay. Nice one, Anet.

"buy gold with gems" appearing too so much?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Xenon.4537

Let me clarify my concern. Anet’s main revenue streams are the gem store and the initial purchase of the game (the box as it were). If we want to see substantial content added to the game, it would need to be part of Anet’s revenue stream in some way. But it isnt. Anet doesn’t need to really go out of their way to add content. They get money by sitting around and letting players convert gems to gold. How does cash -> gem -> gold incentivise Anet to produce an expansion pack? Again this has nothing to do with the state of the in-game economy.

yes they do.

- Does the person who doesnt play the game pay for Gems? Definetly not.

- Does the angry person who is unhappy with game pay for gems? some probably do but most will not out of principle.

you know who’s more likely to pay for gems? the happy player who loves the game.

Regardless of business model they choose giving their players what they want is in their best interest!

You skipped over my question. Anet is not incentivised to produce an expansion. Yes they would get more money and players if they did, but they already have a steady revenue stream. It’s easier for them to just nickle and dime us with the systems they already have in place.

And yes, giving the players what they want is in their best interest. But how do they know what players want? There’s a massive thread with over 1500 replies asking for Cantha that’s been around since launch and is still actively bumped every week. But where’s Cantha? All I see is gem store gem store gem store.

They seem to think that all players want is what they are currently paying for: gems and knick knacks to spend gems on.

I was simply saying that the way Anet advertises this, and the way it makes the future look for this game, are not good. It might be good for Anet’s wallet (more like NCSoft’s wallet if you ask me), but the quality of the game may be neglected if all Anet cares about is the gem store.

Think about it this way. Anet wants to earn money. Their customers want a better game experience. Both Anet and the customers don’t want to turn the game P2W. So Anet releases cosmetic stuff like quaggan backpacks. The customers buy these happily. Anet receives a lot of revenue and what do they think? Hmmm these quaggan backpacks sell really well. We should do this more! People obviously want it, and we need the money! So they make another type of quaggan backpack. And another. And another. What do we end up with? A whole lot of quaggan backpacks with not so much in the way of substantial gameplay improvement or expansion. We customers never see a truly substantial expansion pack because Anet is content extracting pennies from us with quaggan backpacks and using the proceeds to drizzle out some living story patches on the side. After 2 years of this they start asking us to buy gems and convert them to gold on top of all the quaggan backpacks.

So by buying gems you are not helping the game forward (something some gem-buyers like to believe to feel special) but you are helping it’s downfall by pointing the game in the wrong direction. Of course they still need money so be prepared to give money but only for expansions.

I would have no problem paying money for an expansion. Buying Factions, Nightfall, and EotN for GW1 were some of the most satisfying game purchases I ever made. In GW2 I feel like my money is evaporating in to thin air and they are just giving me knick knacks as a consolation prize.

I hate that they are messing up reflects, mostly because I recently started playing with reflect mesmer… It seems stupid to have this thing for your character that says “This skill reflects projectiles” and then have a secret laundry list of dozens of exceptions.

Hey, Anet, how about a little consistency? Either let us reflect or don’t. Having random unreflectable and unblockable exceptions sprinkled throughout the game is just confusing and frustrating.

Are you really surprised? Or are you comparing the now well-known dps builds of warrior with a subpar condi build of necro?

I’m not comparing any specific build. I’d love to know how a necro does more dps and bring more group utility than a warrior.

I’m also confused as to why the topic so quickly flew off on a tangent discussion about warriors. AFAIK mesmers have the most reflects and would be the most impacted by this issue. Why aren’t we talking about them?

Warriors are sacred cows and scapegoats at the same time. Funny

This Wiki page tells us that reflects are not limited to mesmers. However, this also affects skills which destroy projectiles (like Swirling Winds or untraited Phantasmal Warden), but I do not have a list in the Wiki to link to as far as those are concerned.

I count 18 skills that can reflect and 5/18 are mesmer skills. In addition, some of those skills require special conditions or traits in order to reflect. Granted a trait is needed for mesmer, but mesmer is the only one on that page which can chain it’s reflects for permanent uptime. The only ones that come close to that are turret engineers with the bubble trait, and guardians with a specific setup. I’d wager Mesmer still comes out on top in DPS. Well, at least it used to until these changes were made. Sucks.

PvE Dueling

Well, I don’t like the dueling idea.
But If they add an “auto-block dueling invites” feature, it’s fine for me.
It’s pretty annoying when you’re minding your own bussiness and people keep spamming duel invites.
“No, I don’t want to duel my lvl 5 newby char against your lvl 80 clad in epics char.”

PD: QD will become Goldshire 2.0. Mark my words. Then we only gonna need the ERPs to come. =P

You know I played maybe 3-5k hours of WoW over the years and In that time I’ve had maybe 10 strangers ever request to duel me, and none of them spammed it or stalked me or anything abusive like that. From my experience I find it extremely hard to understand the aversion to dueling in this thread under the notion that it will be so rampantly abused.

Granted, I never spent 6 hours a day idling in Goldshire. I did other things. Maybe Goldshire was just a hot spot for dueling? Why hang out in a dueling hot spot if you don’t want to receive duel requests? I’m sure if I spent 6 hours a day naked in front of Starbucks, I would eventually get spotted and arrested. It’s kind of a statistical inevitability.

If you are the “chosen one”, do not melee her because you won’t have enough time to react to the grenade barrage anymore.

If you notice her focusing you, this can be used it to your advantage by luring her over to where-ever the turret spawns. Do this by breaking line-of-sight of Boom-Boom Baines using a nearby tree in the area or the ramp. This helps less aware players switch to the turret.

… anet really didnt add anything to help facilitate organisation.

Don’t you ever wish Anet didn’t have to go out of their way to add sophisticated and costly features to facilitate communication, cooperation, and organization? Why must human beings behave so horribly in video games? Why do we have to be babied and hand-held into playing a certain way? Why can’t we just use map chat and teamspeak and Jolly Cooperation?

firstly..
why should we have to use teamspeak?

secondly. Alot of people have map chat turned off, they do not think of turning it on. It’s not intentional, they just usual have it off and doesnt cross their mind to turn it on.
In this case, anet should force chat option to default. ie map =on

For EU. You could have a group who want to listen, bat happen to have a different client language than yours.
The client language block, is a default setting, most people do not know this exists. This is definitely anets problem and yes they should have created something more to facilitate organisation.

Also, how much more costly would it have been, to simply have all boss health shown on map, despite which boss you’re near?
and then to have (since boss scaling clearly has this ability.) to show number of players which are within 1800 range of the boss?

If anet wants to create organise content, I’m all for it.
but organised content, requires organisation tools.

Those ideas are great, except I’d be a little worried about screen clutter if there are a lot of bosses and other metrics which need to be shown.

As for teamspeak, I think it is absurd for people to refuse to use it, especially for hard encounters. It’s free and takes 30 seconds to download and install. You don’t even need a mic to listen to a commander. Sure you might be able to see the bosses health bar, but you can’t honestly tell me that pugs stop DPS at 5% without someone barking the order verbally. And good luck getting suppressed in chat trying to type commands. That’s assuming you can or even should be typing messages in the middle of combat. And as you said, some of those people don’t even have their chat turned on. You’re advocating we force chat to be turned on, but don’t force people to use voip? You want to enforce an older, archaic means of communication which directly interferes with combat performance and is plagued by anti-spam measures, yet disregard a simple, free, easy-to-use, streamlined, 1 button form of communication?

Hopefully it means Anet has big plans for the future of boss AI. I’d like to see them introduce mechanics which closely mimic real player behavior, with a wider variety of skills. Imagine if mobs had frequent smaller hits, like auto attacks. Healing power would be useful in mitigating them.

Has anyone else had it where all her grenade barrages focus entirely around you, no matter where you move?

A few minutes into the fight, I noticed those little grenade circles. I really hate them because there is so little time to dodge! It’s like I start bleeding the second the circles appear, but I digress!

Anyway, dodge roll… Circles appear again. Dodge roll, they appear again. Get downed, the circles continually appear over me. Move locations with mist form, circles appear again, but luckily there are enough people to rally me. Run away from both her and other people, but the circles still appear on me! So I decide to run far away from the fight and she targets me one last time, before stopping.

I’d like to think I was imagining it, but I only noticed hostile smoke fields and the timed bomb targeting other people. The grenades were always localised to my location?

Makes me sad

I have noticed many times bosses will fixate on me when I play ele. They won’t attack anyone else until I’m gone. It never happens to me on any of my other characters.

It was to fill up empty maps by removing the need to host multiple copies of the same empty map, and instead move those people in to one map. It also aims to streamline the old overflow system by placing you on maps where your friends, party, and guild members are located.

The only problem with the system right now is that you can’t manually select which instance you want to be in. If they had the district option from GW1, things would be much better.

Yes. The manifesto has been used as a weapon in countless inflammatory threads aimed at attacking the devs, Anet, fans, and the game in general. It might have once been discussed seriously, but no more. People have taken it too far and then some. Most of it is to do with simple misinterpretations of the video’s intent and message. Quoting out of context and substituting personal definitions for statements made by devs. Mentioning the manifesto at this point is like putting a trollface sticker on your entire argument. The only way the devs could have pleased the nay-sayers is if they had spoken in legalese. These people thrive on confrontation and will never be happy. Arguing with them is pointless. The coolest title I have that I rarely see people wearing is Closer to the Stars. I could wear Ascendant, but that doesn’t sound as interesting imo. I wish I had GWAMM. Do people still play GW1? Is it viable to go back and get that title? How long would it take?

Not a new request (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/suggestions/A-Polling-System), but I still agree that something like this would be useful.

That thread is a good idea in itself, but it suggests forum polls for the suggestions section. I’m suggesting polls that players are prompted to participate in from the in-game UI. This is to get a larger sample of data from as much of the GW2 community as possible, and not just internet forum warriors. I think Anet should do right by their customers, and it’s got to be rough figuring out what we want by processing ill-written or overly-verbose literature. Instead why not have straight-forward, concise, easy-to-process survey-style questionnaires that appear in-game where 100% of the playing and paying customers are located?

I would like to suggest Anet use the system they had in place for submitting beta feedback to give us some sort of poll to vote on each month. The purpose of this would be to more accurately gauge community opinion on the state of the game and the desired future direction the community would like the game to go.

The forums only represent a minority of all GW2 players, and much of what is posted here is washed away under floods of poorly written posts. There is also a majority of discontent posted on the forums, because most people who are happy with the game are busy playing the game instead of bothering to log in and complain here.

The poll would be something optional that takes 2 minutes to complete with multiple choice answers. It would show up as an icon or extra tab in the UI, and when a new poll is available a small red exclamation mark will notify you just like when you have new mail or TP items to pick up. The questions for the polls could be anything the developer themselves are curious about, or they could be taken from feedback off the forums and CDIs.

Here are some example questions for format.

Were you overall pleased with the latest release?
- Yes
- No

- Deathmatch
- Capture the Flag
- Headhunter (collect skulls from defeated players and turn them in to gain points)

- More Conquest (lol)

If a new playable race were introduced, which would you like to see?
- Tengu
- Kodan
- Hylek

Which area from GW1 would you like to see added to the game?
- Fissure of Woe
- Underworld
- Ring of Fire

What takes so long?

-#3 – Actually I think at least 3 of the PvP maps were added post-release. Skyhammer was one, albeit not so popular. Spiritwatch was another, and iirc Temple of the Silent Storm was one of the first ones added. Then there’s that new deathmatch arena, but we shall see how that goes…

The rest I agree with, would be nice.

And #7 – Real, actual GvG

You can GvG – ever go into the arena in Obsidian Sanctum? Off of TC, there are always guilds scrimmaging in that arena. You can also set up a private PvP arena and GvG in that. What else do you want? What you want is the GW1 version of GvG, but I don’t think that will happen. Since all guild halls were instanced on the same piece of map and that part of the map is taken over by Orr, not sure where the GvG would be held.

That ad-hoc crap they do in OS is not real GvG. Real GvG would be set up like sPvP with matchmaking and specially tailored maps with specific mechanics.

And really? You think they couldn’t come up with a place to put GvG maps in their own game? What law of computer programming says they have to put a multiplayer instance in a physical location that exists on a photoshop painting of a map? Nevermind the fact that there’s tons of free space on those paintings, and the possibility of painting new paintings.

The only thing stopping Anet from doing it is apathy.

Edit: Well, apathy and funding.
