Obsidian Flesh has no “field effect”, also the skill is called Magnetic WAVE and it cures three conditions, not one, and it has no AoE cripple

Ah thanks for the corrections, that is what I get for trying to “focus” with lack of sleep.
It does have an AoE cripple though, lasts 5 seconds, check it out, they just never put it in the tooltip for some reason. I have submitted it to the bug forums already.

Just tested it in the Mists, you’re right. I assumed the snare you mentioned must come from the 15p Earth minor. This skill really does too much :p

I proposed this some time ago. It’s true, when you use LF as an escape tool, chances are you’ll blink 600 range and not 900 just to make sure you get “away” (which isn’t that far away) asap.

Eruption>Ice Spike>Ice Field>Lightning surge then boom!

Eruption>Magnetic wave>icespike>frozen ground>lavafont>signet of earth>lafafont etc.

I Find lightning surge lacking in damage and cast time.

You can cancel out of it via attunement swap or dodgerolling and it’ll still go off. I find it to be great damage that way.

Info of the day. Thanks!
Now I really have no excuse anymore to not read up on every single Ele skill on the Wiki to learn secrets :p

Stealth needs to drop on damage

Won’t happen unless they implement a short invulnerability time once a player uses stealth… in fact, that’s a good idea!
In WoW Rogues had trouble with stealth getting canceled right upon using it for ages, because lag and traveling projectiles don’t care that there’s no target anymore.

GW2 and Skill Gap -- Game's Biggest Problem

in PvP

Posted by: Xolo.3580

Xolo.3580

Most skills in GW2 are free of cost besides cooldown and there is no global cooldown. Many skills are of the “fire and forget” type, including defensive skills.

I used to compare skills of GW2 with WoW and it seems to me that the design mentality of Anet is the polar opposite to Blizzard’s design mentality: Blizzard repeatedly stated that their way of designing abilities is trying to make a skill as cool and powerful as possible, then tone it down in beta until it’s in line with the rest. Many skills in GW2, on the other hand, leave the impression that they were designed to be as weak as possible, because they cost much less than their WoW counterparts.
The result is, that a single skill in WoW feels much more worth it and you often have to use 2 or 3 skills in GW2 to achieve the same effect (take for example the Mage’s Frost Nova spell, which is an AoE root “combo field” that lasts a lot longer than 2 seconds, if untouched).
The combat flow of WoW is also slower, thanks to global cooldown, so that it’s possible to react to these more impactful abilities accordingly, resulting in a beautiful interaction between opposing players called PvP.
Of course WoW has lost its glamour regarding PvP long ago, but there was a time when PvP was a hell of a lot of fun and I did nothing else, because skill and knowledge of classes mattered a ton! Warcraftmovies.com was full of excellent PvPers making movies back then. Many of them could take on multiple enemies on a regular basis, and not all of them had good gear. The game gave them the chance to play exceptionally well and they used it.

Xolo.3580

Well, the questions I have are of the uncomfortable sort, which is why I don’t have high hopes they will be asked/answered.

-After all the negative feedback regarding Downed State in PvP, are you considering changing something drastic about what happens when players reach zero life in PvP?
-When can we expect meaningful changes to PvP balance so tactics, skill and build diversity become more important?
-Are there plans to lessen the downtime in WvWvW when fighting somewhere far away from a Waypoint? (running across half the map for minutes, fighting a few seconds, get wiped by zerg, ress at home and run again for minutes, that kind of downtime)

Focus - The underappreciated weapon

in Elementalist

Posted by: Xolo.3580

Xolo.3580

So the verdict is: Fire skills on Focus are about the worst skills in the game on their own, the rest is decent/good, but some skills could have their CD reduced (e.g. Air 5) + Focus lacks synergy with Dagger and there are only a few good damage options when combining Focus with Scepter.

Quick question. When does a character say this line?
My female Asura Elementalist said it once and the pronunciation was hilarious, but I cannot remember the circumstances or weapons etc. she used. I hear this line quite frequently from other characters around me but I couldn’t figure out yet which professions, weapons and skills are required. Thanks!

I just went through a painful process of checking anything humanly possible regarding this problem (which is also my problem). Not only will I get freezes that force me to reset the whole PC, I also get blue screens from time to time. So I googled the file that was noted in the bluescreen and it belongs to the ATI Catalyst Control Center (name of the file is atikmdag.sys) and more people are having trouble with freezes and BSOD. I just uninstalled the CCC and will post again after I tested how my PC behaves now. Just wanted to let you know about this potential fix since you’re using CCC as well. I hope it works.

I’m frequently using S/F while farming, but I don’t like it as much in dungeons, because of the lack of sustained AoE damage that even equipping Conjures doesn’t really remedy.
IMO Focus only works with Scepter anyway, because Focus gives you a very odd combination of skills with Dagger (no heal but double chill in Water, much worse Fire dmg than D/D)

''No weapon swapping hurts competitive play''

in PvP

Posted by: Xolo.3580

Xolo.3580

Keeping the weapon lock is a necessity IMO. It shouldn’t be the optimal play to cycle weapons OOC for swiftness buffs etc. because the interface does not support this. Choosing a weapon has a lot to do with choosing your playstyle, as does choosing your traits which you shouldn’t be able to change during a match either. This will help the e-sportability (that’s a word… maybe) because it’s easier for an audience (and for the opposing team) to determine what a player can and can’t do, thus giving him a recognizable identity.

Don’t go Staff while leveling, it’s really bad for that. The easiest thing to do, once you get the hang of it, is D/D and making sure you use enough vitality on your gear. Leveling Ele can be pretty frustrating, because the builds that work well at 80 are highly specialized.

I don’t get why people cry about this……………

Ele downed state sucks, yet im not complaining and i don’t have a problem with downed state.

People need to realize that its part of the game.

Get used to it or go L2P.

also, competition time:

how many threads can you link crying about the downed state?

1) It’s not called “crying” if someone has a different opinion that you, admittedly, don’t understand.
2) The fact of something being part of something is not an argument. It’s just stating the obvious.
3) “L2P” is what people type when they don’t know what to say.
4) How does linking (the very many) threads with complaints about DS help your argument? It rather implies that something actually must be wrong if so many complain about it.

Problem I encou tered is that ppl can go and leave whenever they want. Full party one sec and like 5 secs later everybody is gone.

I think that’s a bug with the party frame. Team members who are far away drop off, but they are still in the game and will reappear once you get near to them again.

It kinda sucks as well. I randomly take 13k damage in a single shot. I have the Knight amulet equipped as well. Nothing should be doing that much damage.

And you can be shot at with that from stealth! This is however twice as balanced as stuff in sPvP. Why? It takes ~4sec to fully charge while rooting you, and even if you use stealth beforehand you will have invested bigtime for that potential damage (using 2 skills with cooldowns, doing nothing for 4 sec).

Can anyone say there is anything ‘fun’ about the downed state? How do you think new players seeing it in action will first react?

A friend of mine with whom I started playing the game named DS as one of the reasons why he stopped playing shortly after release. He was a PvP maniac as I was in WoW, played in one of the Arena top teams on his realm pool etc., but he couldn’t ignore how limiting and annoying DS is when playing solo or even in unorganized groups. Other reasons he named were the activation delay of many skills that made combat feel odd to him, and too many easy-to-execute-but-hard-to-counter skills (basically anything quickness related of which several things were yet un-nerfed at release).

Someone had to make this thread and you know it!

I’m actually having quite a bit of fun with this activity. The map is big, no super small confined cap points, the relatively open space with carefully placed obstacles allows for positional play, as does the absence of instant gap closers. The buffs and new winning objective are also refreshing and a welcome change to capping and (not) defending points on sPvP maps.
I was especially pleased when I discovered the Snow Wall skill of the Supporter, because I suggested a similar skill for Elementalist before Beta :p.

I hope this map is a test of new game modes and I’d like to congratulate whoever built it, because it’s much more enjoyable to play for me than the restrictive sPvP maps.

Signet of Inspiration & noise

While I appreciate the, yet again, out of combat functioning of this signet, my character keeps on saying his flavor lines almost every 10 seconds, which, alongside the boon sounds themselves, creates a lot of unnecessary noise. Imagine standing somewhere in LA and 2 Mesmers are close to you who have this signet equipped, constantly babbling and dinging and ringing with boons t.t.

This is only one of many examples of unnecessary noise in GW2 (e.g. audio loops repeating too often or being too loud, personal audio responses of NPCs audible for everyone, NPCs triggering “Help me” lines EVERYTIME a character enters their radius, etc.). Someday I’d like to not have to mute my game sound whenever I enter LA, or visit a camp in Orr.

P.S.: I like the snowballs

GW2 depth of combat discussion?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Xolo.3580

There is still new stuff I find out about my Ele after months of playing her. Sure this game has a lot of depth, BUT… there are comparatively few skills and builds that are competitive right now, so all the neatness and trickery often doesn’t matter because it cannot compete, and that’s why some people say the combat is shallow. As long as you can win by spamming buttons or using oneshot combos, combat will feel shallow and the underlying complexity won’t matter much.

Temple of the Forgotten God

in Personal Story

Posted by: Xolo.3580

Xolo.3580

I just did this story step for the 4th time on my 4th (now) lv80 char and it’s still as bad as I remember it. After I’ve been pleasantly surprised seeing mob population in the lv50ish “Orr vision” story step drop from approximately 2000 to 200, I had hopes that the Forgotten Temple mobs would have been nerfed as well. Alas, the sharks still basically oneshot light/medium armor professions, which means they brought my Guardian to roughly 25% life with one instant undodgeable attack. The conditions the Rotmouth things do stack to double digits in a few seconds and the swarms that apply these bleeds follow you around while other mobs beat on you.

Please have a look at this story step, it’s especially frustrating because it’s underwater combat which is even less balanced than normal combat. The only time I did this mission without too much trouble was on my Mesmer. I hated it on my Thief, I wanted to punch a wall when I did it on my Ele, and my Guardian with whom I regularly pull 5+ mobs on land with ease, had big problems as well.

I’m new to Guardian, but IMO Line of Warding has to be instant and usable on the move. It happens so often that I want to use it but will end up not doing so, because of the cast time and root.

The second most annoying thing to me currently is the pulse rate of Symbol of Swiftness. I regularly walk across it and nothing happens because the Swiftness pulses are too far apart

What are some ways P/P can be made favorable?

in Thief

Posted by: Xolo.3580

Xolo.3580

We are looking into this. I actually think P/P has a lot of utility. Blind field, daze, vuln stacking. However damage is a bit low. We are making some headway here in the12/14 build so be patient for one more week.

Jon

I think few people will argue that Pistol Offhand is weak. Whatever you do to improve damage of P/P’s first three skills, please don’t make it too bursty.

And I have to second this post:

Since JonPeters read this topic, I would like to quickly report a problem with Headshot – it can be delayed by auto-attack’s animation (P/P). The delay can be over 0.5 second long. So, when I see somebody rising hand to heal, many times Headshot is delayed despite fact I clicked it, and hits after the target heals.
So, please make Headshot instant and not dependant on animations, like dodge roll.

PS: same with Flanking Strike, it has to be instant, non-delayed by animations dodge!

This is a problem across the whole game, not just with Thief!

Mimic Bugged?

Xolo.3580

Hm, I gotta test how early you have to use it, but in WvW, where I used Mimic the most I’ve had bad experiences with anyone using bigger one projectile attacks, especially Warriors, so that’s why I went on to Feedback, because it’s also instant and more reliable (and also easier to see and it doesn’t block melee, but I need/want the reflect part to work 100% which is the primary function I’m looking for)

Community's Voice: Dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Xolo.3580

Xolo.3580

Compared to WvW tokens the accumulation of dungeon tokens is a breeze. But it’s also true that I want to throw a bomb at each dungeon I’m done collecting tokens in. This is mostly because after several runs the annoying things of a dungeon become more and more annoying, like many of the trash mobs in Twilight Arbor for example. So once dungeons are finetuned better that’s gonna help a lot with replayability.

Another thing I find problematic is the focus on boss fights regarding loot. You already changed something about that and that’s good. Groups must not think like “We gotta clear this trash and/or skip as much as possible so we can finally get to the interesting and rewarding stuff”.

What I personally would find interesting to counter that is if there were ways to increase rewards from trash mobs based on how the fight goes. Each pull could have different parameters depending on difficulty and behavior of the mobs. For example: If you kill the Knight pulls in explorable TA without them downing or killing someone you will get 5 Silver or 5 tokens extra per Knight kill. Or if you manage to kill an aoe pull really fast you will get a dungeon only food that gives you 2 minutes of random stat boosts which can make the boss fight easier and faster. Or if you interrupt or reflect a mob’s dangerous attack you get 3 Orichalcum Ores, and if you survive a condition heavy pull without anyone in the group having a status effect then your group will get a 2 minute swiftness buff, etc etc..
There could also be general bonus requirements for groups that count for the whole dungeon for any pull, like “not taking damage” or “killing the next pull at most 20 seconds after the first, with ever shrinking time windows and increasing rewards” or “group ending the fight with 100% life” and so on. You could even change these requirements after some time, weekly or monthly, to easily give dungeons a new twist.

On top of that, I would also love to see more interaction with the surroundings in the dungeons, for example alternative ways to kill mobs, like with a rockslide or with timing a trap or how about getting professional at what people do in dungeons anyway: skipping mobs. You could implement mobs chasing the players for a while down narrow paths with obstacles and if the group escapes they will get a reward.

I feel like I’ve rambled on quite a bit and I hope my post makes any sense. The point I was trying to make is to add more ways for skillful play to matter, to make groups WANT to fight trash mobs (by adding bonus requirements) or at least make them not lose time doing so by giving them something that will actually quicken the run if they fight well.

Although it’s a bit disappointing, having 3 similar maps in WvW is the easiest way to ensure balance. If you played WoW just think about how often Blizzard had to change Alterac Valley, a map that always looked quite similar on both ends but small differences had a huge impact on balance. A total of 4 different maps would be nice, but I’d rather have everything else made “fun” first. I’ll gladly PvP in a dirty cellar if the system is tuned well.
