Is the Nightmare Court truly evil?

It’s kind of like ‘child throwing a fit because mom didn’t do what they wanted.’ Cadyern want to get revenge on the asura for pretty much torturing and experimenting on Malomedies (although to be fair they didn’t realize he was sentient and they did ask for peace after this) but when he asked the Pale Tree what they should do she said to accept peace, to not exact revenge. Cadyern could not see why his mother would tell him to ignore these natural feelings, why hold a tablet written by some centaur none of them even know in such high regard. He saw this as unnatural, and founded the Nightmare Court in hopes to get his mother to accept that these feelings of anger and malice as normal and necessary. They do seem to have attracted quite a bit of fanatics that are just violent psychopaths though.

I think they made the decision to keep some choices very permanent, such as choosing your order, to promote rolling alts, or re-rolling, or whatever. to keep people playing longer.

This isn’t even about getting wealthy, most of the current things you can do, the amount of time you spend on it and the reward you get is way out of whack. You need to do 3 DEs to even cover the cost of teleporting to the zone to begin with let alone begin making profit. You die once and you need to do 1 DE to recover the repair cost for that death, assuming you don’t die on that one also. Some dungeons are just plain broken.

this is to prevent you from having kitten tons of gold within that time span, also waypoints, because they are are kind of expensive, don’t seems like they were mean to be used often or over like three maps of space. I really never pay more than 1s 50c on a way point because i keep my travel in one map. I’d also rather walk three maps to get to the event or whatever i want to do then i can do events along the way, and loot stuff. Idk that’s just me. Also go to the heart of the mists and then port to Lions Arch for a cheap shortcut.

As for dungeons yeah they are hard, and i think they should have a bit better rewards, i would not call them broken, some of them need a bit of tuning yes, but they are doable.

also why are you dying so much? I don’t die in DE’s unless for some reason I’m trying to do a group event by myself, or say with only three people.

I just have to say, if you could be wealthy in no time , you’d be done with this game in two days, and not play it until the next expansion. they don’t want that, they want people to actually be in the game most of the time, you’ll get your shiny eventually, just not in a day.

Race/Lore fitting names - HELP!

in Lore

Posted by: Yata.8932

Yata.8932

Sylvari, names tend to be Celtic, Welsh, Irish, and occasionally Arthurian. no last names typically, maybe titles like ‘so-and-so of the whatever.’

Asura are short and sharp, with double consonants being common, though longer names are seen. Bippie seems fine.

Norn tend to have old Nordic, and Scandinavian sounding names. Their last names refer to one of their parents, or kin, such as, so-and-so, Jorasdottir meaning doughter of Jora or so-and-so Stegalkin meaning kin of Stegal though some have a title gained from a great feat they are famous for.

Charr names can be either something like Torch, or Flint, or Ember. something war like. Or they can be nonsensical, guttural sounding names like Murga, or Rankar, or Kallfaz. Their last names are partly the name of their warband, and partly a descriptor of their talents, mundane or otherwise. like Kalla Swordshaodw, she is either of the sword or shadow warband and is wither good with swords or has something to do with shadows. that is largely up to you.

now humans idk so much, European? Italian? Spanish? Asian? something pretty normal.

I didn’t mind the end too much, I just didn’t feel like i was in any danger at all while we were pew pewing him since we had cleared all the mobs off of the deck first. I think maybe some of us were supposed to shoot while the rest handled the mobs so it felt a bit more chaotic, but the big bad himself doesn’t actually attack so we just let him sit there while we killed his minions. /shrug

I would like to clarify that the majority of soundless sylvari like apart from the tree and the dream because their connections to the dream are too strong, they cant bear the ‘cacophony’ of their races emotions constantly. I’m not sure if there are sylvari that become soundless because they don’t like the idea of the tablet, since most of them are sided with the nightmare court, naturally.

Besides crawlkill nearly having an aneurism while chastising the imperfection of a fantasy universe he paid to be a part of, this thread is interesting. The fact is, Ventari’s Tablet is open to interpretation (because when, exactly, is something done growing? Physically, it’s pretty easy to judge, in most cases. But mentally, it’s always growing, always learning and always experiencing new things). The sylvari emerge into a world threatened by evil, and the attempt at moral goodness put forth by the centaur sage is simply not enough to combat the malevolence this young race is facing. Can you really blame them? Be glad that while the sylvari have some hive-mind aspects, they are diverse enough (partly because of which Cycle they emerge in, partly because of individual development) to avoid appearing like mind-linked robots.

I would just like to point out that they are by no means hive minded. Take for example two sylvari who just emerged from the dream, neither of them have the experience of eating roast moa. Sylvari A eats roast moa for the first time, this does not mean sylvari B now knows what roast moa tastes like. The like they share outside of the dream is faint empathy at best. Very few may look back into the dream. Not a hive mind.

Sorry off topic over.

Thank you!

Saying “you can’t cure Nightmare corruption” is ridiculous. Again…does the real world give up on the ill, mentally or otherwise, after twenty-five years? It’s clear the sylvari DO see Nightmare membership as an illness. Its being irreversible is just some fiat declaration to make it okay to murder them by the M&Mly handful (and you can just bet there’ll be “redeemed Nightmarers” showing up somewhere down the line, since no nerd can resist the temptation to reenact Drizzt).

It’s really kind of ambiguous to me how the relationship between Dreamers and Courtiers has come to be what it is. Courtiers convert Dreamers, but Dreamers just murder Courtiers, and we see frequently that Courtiers recruit through persuasion just as they do through, uh, hands-on methods.

I don’t know. It all just seems pitched at that grade school level. “THEY ARE THE BAD GUYS WE ARE GOOD SEE WE BELIEVE IN CENTAUR MOSES.” Then any act is suddenly excusable, because, well, every eight-year-old knows you have to shoot the bad guys til they fall down.

Who says they gave up? They didn’t just try once and said ‘Oh well lets just kill them!" I believe they said they haven’t found a way yet , implying that the menders are still trying to find a way to reverse this process. However you can’t just sit back and let the nightmare grow while they speculate how to fix it.

As for their methods, the court uses persuasion to raise seeds (no pun intended) of doubt so that the dreamers will join them, and this works. But, the dreamers have more than likely tried to use rational persuasion as well and that has apparently never worked.

And it’s not like they send raiding parties out to nightmare camps to kill them en masse… Usually the court provokes something.

Edit: The nightmare corruption is not the flu. They say it is an illness metaphorically.

during one of the last missions in Orr Trehearn I believe maybe someone else, say something about how using magic was very common for the orrians, they used it like they would any other tool. Magic today is reserved for when we can't accomplish things otherwise. Someone else also outright states that their magic was inherent, whereas today you must learn it. please correct me if anythings wrong here.

And the murdering of prisoners? And the writing off people who join the Nightmare Court as somehow “irredeemable?”

That;s just Caithe right? Her lover fell to nightmare so i think she’s allowed to be bitter. I know cheap answer but that’s all I got. Most probably wouldn’t kill a prisoner
without good cause. As for not being able to “cure” the nightmare, it’s not really like a disease. I mean metaphorically it is, but the sylvari have yet to find a way to bring people back from the nightmare. So this is why death is the preferred option for keeping their numbers in check.

As for how this “disease” works, i’m not sure. it probably has something to do with the ever mystical dream. I’m not sure. but for lore purposes it seems irreversable.

Yata.8932

It’s not like they just sit at their base chatting a[bout their nightmare. They actively seek to destroy the dreamers way of like. The tenet doesn’t seem to imply that they should turn the other cheek. For example there was a blog post concerning Cadyern, he wanted to destroy some drake eggs or whatever then another sylvari said that all things have aright to grow, so they didn’t kill the drake eggs because they weren’t a threat at the time, and they may not be a threat when they hatch.

You see the Nightmare Court actively seeks to undo the dreamers way of like and to turn their mother to nightmare every day. This is seen as a large threat to the dreamers, that if left unchecked, could be their end.

Just some clarification: While the dragon minions -and possibly the .dragons themselves- will fight amongst each other if given the opportunity, I would not go so far as to say they are enemies. They don’t actively seek each other out, and they may not even be aware of each others existence

Is it a Conflict of Interest for the other races to do Charr missions?

in Lore

Posted by: Yata.8932

Yata.8932

Yes, anyone who comes near the ghosts is attacked. It doesn’t matter what race they are, the ghosts are stuck in that moment in time and still see as the invading charr. So I think since they are a threat to anyone, sympathy or not, the other races see them as a problem that needs to be taken care of.

First off, the dream is not something that was created or given to the sylvari by the pale tree, she even says so herself, she does not control the dream she is merely its caretaker and conduit. Secondly, I highly doubt that the pale tree is and elder dragon, I don’t see that fitting into the story very well. What would happen to our playable race later in the story?

Where's the party quests?

in Players Helping Players

As far as I know there aren’t any events or hearts that require you to form a party. the dungeons are the only thing that require 5 people, though if you want you can do it with less but that’s not advised.

I think this is ok though, as not everyone has a party of players on hand at any given time, this makes it easier to complete content even if you don’t have any friends. I get what you want though, and it’s understandable.

Gate of Uroboros [GU] on Maguuma, seeking members!

in Guilds

Posted by: Yata.8932

Yata.8932

Welcome to the Gate of Uroboros. Our goal as a Guild is to explore every corner of the world and uncover the secrets and mysteries of Tyria.

We take an interest in exploration and mapping, personal story lines and quests, crafting, PvP and WvW, even just being helpful to players in need, whatever our members do to have fun. That being said, you don’t have to do all of these things nor do you need to have a hardcore mindset, having a varied member base is a part of our vision.

Our guild will be Located on the Maguuma server.

Requirements:

  • We have no age restriction, however childish or disruptive behavior will not be taken lightly.
  • Willingness to work together, and don’t be a jerk.
  • Respectful attitude for your guild mates and other players.
  • You should be active, this doesn’t mean you have to play everyday. we know the real world has it’s responsibilities, but at least be on twice a week.

Rules:
As a guild master, I feel having a long list of rules and regulations doesn’t always work like it’s expected to. That being said, I feel that if our members avoid violating the game ToS and general avoid acting needlessly rude, obnoxious, or disruptive to other players, then we won’t have many problems.

Issues with other members:
Now if there is any discrepancy between players the issue should be addressed toward the guild master or an appropriate higher ranking member should the guild master not be available. Any and all issues that members bring before the guild master will be settled on a individual basis, and any judgements are final unless otherwise stated.

Multi-Guild Policy:
While we don’t have any problems with our members being part of multiple guilds, we ask that you dedicate an equal and appropriate amount of time to Gate of Uroboros as you would your other guilds. A minimum of 2 days a week (longer periods of inactivity will require prior notice) is expected of all members. A member has not been representing our guild for more than ten (10) days straight without prior notice they will receive a warning and if they continue to neglect the guild they will be kicked,

The Guild Master operates in Central time, and we do have Mumble, so while having a headset or mic is not a requirement, it does help communication in some areas..
