Regarding aggro and " hate " – it’s not a good idea – this game was supposed to have no tank. And shouldn’t. The fact that mobs can randomly switch targets makes combat feel organic and alive.
Otherwise one class will be decided upon as the " boss handler " – he’ll keep the boss focused on him while all others afk/spam 1.

  • Mobs need enmity that can be manipulated by players. The ability to generate hate or grab mobs attention should be in game. Every class should have the ability or skill to increase or decrease “hate”. In turn mobs can maybe have a cool off period where enmity resets and needs to be rebuilt.

Skill interaction is funny in this game.

On the topic, as many Guardians in the house might know, the trait that allows GS skills to heal you is actually attached to just holding the GS itself. So you could DoT on any other weapon and swap to GS and receive heals from all consequent ticks.

And then you clear it in 3 minutes.

Now, now that is total bull lol. There’s no way u clear City in 3 min in Hard Mode, not even by speed clear, or even in Normal Mode. What ur saying is pure exaggeration. Anyone that has done those runs would know that. You must have been listening to some bravado mate of yours lol. I’ve run full clear DoA runs 100’s of times in Hard Mode (including speed clears) and i know exactly what the place is about and how long it takes and it definitely takes longer than 3 minutes.

Yea, nah. I’m betting as many hundreds of runs as you did, I did that many hundred more. So trust my authority on the matter, especially because I was one of the lead tactic and build developers for my guild’s attempts for a fair period of time when world records were between 20- and 30-minutes, and these were the outlines I imposed for my team (that were beaten SEVERAL times).

A HM DoA of the teamway variety (eg/ no world record terra splitting tactics) was capable of being done sub-25 minutes with some fair breathing room. My personal record is 23 minutes. But for a 25-minute run, it still imposes restrictions on how quickly you must complete areas. Including time spent running from area to area (perhaps 60-80 seconds), a simple time table would look like this (and these are maximums):
Foundry 6 mins (6)
City 4 mins (10)
Veil 8 mins (18)
Gloom 4 mins (22)

So that would be a 23-to-24-minute run. City is easily completable in ~3:30, and often, a legitimate world record attempt (prior to tactics involving City being soloed while others cleared Veil), your group MUST resign if it took you anything over /age 3 minute to pop Jadoth.

I’m too busy flipping between Focus/Staff might stacking (Guard ofc) then back to GS to kill, then making sure I still have swiftness up to break combat and run to the next burrow, stacking might before it pops (all to avoid weapon swap cooldowns ughh).

It’s actually become one of my favorite events.

Mental checklist:

AC1 – It will be up for Queen, Burrows, and perhaps intermittently during final boss (I’m unsure if tagging an add that runs into a flame circle procs it, otherwise not) [2/3 combat events]
AC2 – It will be up for Queen, defending Detha at pillars, but not for end boss [2/3 combat events]
AC3 – Queen, Burrows, more Burrows, but not end boss [3/4 combat events]

CoF1 – It will be up for Slave Driver, anything after the first Acolyte in Acolyte room, and at totems, but perhaps only Effigy for a short time [3/4 combat events]
CoF2 – Devourers, Burrows, and the two rooms atop the ramp, as well as defending Magg and final boss [6/6 combat events]
CoF3 – Active while clearing torches, trash leading to first champ, and the defend event; likely not maintainable for champ drake and end boss [3/5 combat events]

HotW1 – Opening trash, turrets, maybe Troll, plus the trash and boss after the troll will be permanent uptime, but you will lose it at Ginva [3/5 combat events]

SE1 – Should be active on first two bosses, 66% uptime on Golem trio, down on last boss [call it 3/4 combat events]
SE3 – First boss, Zadorojny after you kill one of his many escorts, and Destroyer if he spawns an add pretty early to keep uptime from killing Zadorojny [3/4 combat events]

Meh typing this on a cellphone is a joke. I’d keep going but I don’t care so much. Yeah, it’s situational. But as you can see it’s still got a pretty good (minimum 50% combat events) uptime if you’re not RPing walking inbetween mobs killed with Cleric gear.

Considering the power buff lasts for 30s, it is pretty situational.

Do you perhaps run Clerics and RP walk from mob to mob?

And regardless of the subtraction of 200 power, it’s still an additional 10 crit damage, which for 80 copper, is cheaper than, and will benefit progression more than… magic find food.

You have literally no reason not to use this and Slaying potions. It’s MAYBE 2 silver for a single run.

You hate feeling like you’re the most useful person in the group? That’s the most backwards thing I’ve ever heard; imagine if everyone thought that way? Literally no one would pull their weight due to not wanting to be the only person pulling their weight, in contrast to everyone just pulling their weight in the first place, and then there will be no dead weight to carry.

Or maybe that’s too logical…

Young Somalia.1706

Personally, I prefer the new system. I was never crazy about GW1’s energy system, which was okay, but nothing I got excited about. It probably didn’t help that I was a Ranger/Ele, which meant I was using a lot of energy-sucking fire skills with subpar energy regeneration, without access to Energy Storage.

So you didn’t like energy because you didn’t know how to play efficiently?

Gotcha.

Knowing the mentalities of the majority in this game (using your brain is an exploit), I can already imagine if it WAS implented; I can practically see the BHB threads now:

>_high sets are exploiting energy caps_
>_low sets are exploiting by hiding energy_

While high cooldowns and energy basically fulfill the same purpose (don’t waste your resource, use skills wisely) I feel like energy did it better. Energy denial was a great shutdown mechanic; their currently is no real form of shutdown involving the current interactions with players and skills (such as elongating cooldowns or disabling skills for a period; IN FACT, Guild Wars even had that. Blackout, Diversion, D.Shot). The only such thing may be Stun and Daze, which is hilariously shallow in comparison. Pop a stun break or cleanse, or wait the 2 seconds for it to expire. You know what you did when you get Diversioned? Watch your skill recharge for the next minute and spend your time reflecting on why you shouldn’t blindly cast spells like an idiot the next time.

worst dungeon

Young Somalia.1706

Screw worst dungeon, this is now (for this post ._.) an LoS semantics thread!

If aggro was the same in GW2 as GW1, stacking in a corner would still be an exploit, but only because the mobs wouldn’t run in range and you’d obstruct all of their projectiles.

I mean, I just don’t get it. Is every room supposed to be cylindrical, with no clutter, and we intentionally stand getting punched in the face?

It’s just like Clerics vs Zerkers; pugs cry about something because they intentionally make it difficult for themselves.

I understand if bads find stacking boring, that’s a product of preference which cannot be srgued, but in any case scenario involving stacking in a corner and the aggro mechanics of one game or the other, it’s labelled an exploit. I can just picture it now: “Corners are exploits and an unintended side effect of triangles, squares, pentagons, …” etc…

For anything speed you have to make a lot of stipulations and form your group for more than 2 minutes (hopefully people aren’t impatient).

I’d take the whole CoE over any Arah path if i’ve had to pug it.

I get the sentiment, but unfortunately, it’s not so intuitive in practice. 2 people can clear any Arah boss, even with poor DPS, and run to the next WP; two people cannot complete P23 Alpha if DPS is kitten simply due to intervals of crystals and dodging (they will eventually overlap and get one person killed, sentencing the 2nd to a rather imminent death).

Bahaha these guys always use conjecture or hearsay when they say things like, “if you don’t go zerker you get kicked” or “they call you a noob!”

And in my experience of doing pug dungeons EXCLUSIVELY for hundreds of hours, I say that any time I even moderately “ridiculed” someone (which was typically inferred by the subject from my apparently “negative tone” in trying to tell someone something) they cry, and rally support from the other non-“elitists” like a bunch of carebears just crying and hugging in a circle.

I never see people the target of directed, MALICIOUS ridicule like I hear about so often. I’ve rarely seen people kicked because of their cabbage patch performance. And if my group is disgustingly bad (AC p1 library, I’m kiting, after 3 minutes they are still killing the 2ND burrow) I just leave because I know the fact: this kitten generation of “you tried your best, here’s a trophy” players will get all twisted up and teary eyed over being told, “can someone roll an ele?” or “you guys NEED to do more dps”.

I can’t even remember the last time I remember getting zerkers in my parties, so no, people aren’t getting kicked for not running zerker, because I see barely anyone doing damage or MELEEing, at all.

Stop inventing these pity-pandering fantasies to lend credit to your self-enforced complaints (because don’t forget, no one forces you to play with mob skippers, anyone can start their own party with their own terms).

As for players, many of them aren’t actually playing the game my way, they use efficient strats and watch the gold number in their wallet going up. If the dungeons weren’t giving gold, they wouldn’t even be there.

And of course, they are always harassed by the some other playerbase jealous of their “watching gold number” game until their “tactics” involves carrying them in dungeons, instead of enjoying the game itself.

FTFY

Are you suggesting that watching a number go up is just a “way to play this game”? Because I can recommend a game that does it better: Microsoft Excel.

This game is about dungeons and monsters. If your “way” is to avoid all that, than you really should be playing something else.

whoa what happened to “I play how I want”? elitism much?

Playing how you want requires at least playing in the first place. Skipping content isn’t playing, it’s actually not playing.

It’s very sad that people who hate dungeons and want nothing to do with them (as they admit themselves) are dictating how to run them. So thanks to them exploiting of design flaws and loopholes to make dungeon runs as short as possible always becomes mainstream.

Elitism much? What happened to the baddies cheer of “I play how I want”. All of a sudden when there’s something they don’t like they scream “That’s not playing!”

Skipping mobs has a certain tactic to it as well. If you do it scattered and don’t bring running/escape skills, you’re going to die and wipe repeatedly. The fact that many people complain about how hard it is, and many people say how it’s much easier, means that it’s a skill that needs to be acquired.

On a side note, this was my attempt to bring the conversation back to an actual topic instead of huehuehue #5 #4 huehuehue

I don’t think you know what elitism means.

Just because you’re obviously casual doesn’t mean you can’t be elitist.

If one guy says “zerker is the only way to play” and you brand him elitist, but you, in your case, insist that “killing everything is the only way to play,” what’s the difference in attitude? Why is one sweeping assessment of what is allowed more elitist than another sweeping statement about what is allowed?

I’ve seen more casual elitists than skilled elitists, truly.

My ACTUAL advice not pertinent to maximum efficiency, but for learning:

Learn the paths in order of 3-2-1. That’s order of difficulty for a pug. It will give you an easing into Arah and the mobs, so when the running portions start adding more and more enemies, you’re more used to it.

But you’ll probably get lost running until you know the paths anyway. But regardless. Don’t start learning Arah on P1. It will hurt more than it will help.

And I haven’t attempted it but logically it should imply that Eternity will be Twilight in night dungeons and Sunrise in day dugeons.

We could basically call it a guaranteed Lodestone per path since no path will award less than 1.4g total (2 cores is 1 gold or so, convert CoF/HotW/Arah/CoE tokens into dungeon rares/salvage for ectos and sell to buy dust, or salvage ectos for dust, and Wine for 25s from the merchant).

I must jump in and acknowledge that you are just trying to help people(…)

Yes, he’s trying to help, but he’s not actually helping. And it’s not even to be rude or cynical, it’s just point blank: the boss isn’t hard if you just pay attention to what’s happening. 90% of the adds literally kill themselves trying to get to you if you just camp in the back corner. It’s faster and easier.

I’m sure a person would be “just trying to help” if they gave salt water to someone dying of thirst, but when the help is in fact more detrimental, well… it’s hardly a net loss to correct them.

I agree that the dungeons in this game are trash. I simply have my favorite trash and do it every day since they’re fun. But still trash.

At least WoW had dungeons I loved. But come on, too predictable? Everything is predictable when you’re exp because that’s part of what being exp is.

Zul’Aman bear runs were predictable. They were also fun as hell.
