I’d venture to say that the vast majority of GW2 players, regardless of whether they’re dungeon runners, WvW’ers, RPers, PvPers or open worlders, do not contribute a lot to society outside of having a job and paying their bills. :P

I don’t think the anti-crafter in your example above would have to wait long though. The TP shows that the GW2 market is VAST indeed. If you could post buy requests at a reasonable price, you can bet a crafter would be along to fill it very shortly.

And again, this is purely for skins. Players could buy generic-skinned Exotic weapons from high-level NPC vendors for coin or karma if they’re that impatient or just don’t care about looks. At the same time, perhaps certain dungeons/Fractals/activities can also reward specific skins that can be applied to an existing weapon, which allows dungeon runners etc. to work for their own skins.

Someone on this forum once made an interesting suggestion. What if mobs didn’t drop items at all? Monsters only drop coin and crafting materials; all items in the game come from either NPC vendors (karma or coin), or from PC crafters, with most of the unique skins in the game only available through PC crafting. (Instead of purchasing dungeon weapons/armor, for example, the vendors instead sell crafting recipes. So if you wanted, say, an AC greatsword, you’d need to either run the dungeon a few times to get the tokens to learn the recipe and craft it yourself, or you just buy one from another player who’s crafted one with certain stats and put it up for sale.)

Arah Dungeon Selling Needs to Change

Am I the only one who sees the irony in “Zhaitan” being an Arah seller? XD

But on topic, I don’t think much will be done anytime soon. ANet may have said dungeon selling is “OK”, but I think they mean that in the sense that it’s not a bannable offense. ANet has had a track record of not liking runs and skips dating all the way back to GW1; they just can’t eradicate it completely because players inevitably find a new way to cheese/skip content, and they can’t fix everything without making the game all but unenjoyable for normal players.

Why not though? Just by doing a Level 9 Fractal a day, I can earn 2.5 Obsidian Shards (24 Relics for completion, plus a Pristine Fractal Relic that can be converted to 15 Relics) a day, plus gold, Emp Fragments and other assorted loot. Assuming a halfway decent group, you can complete that in about an hour and a bit. That’s about the same time it would take to earn the 5000 or so karma you’d need for buying the Obsidian from the Temple of Balthazar.

Thoughts on skipping

Zaxares.5419

I would like to see more “full clears” of dungeons, but in order for that to happen, we’d need to make it more worthwhile to players from a time and loot perspective. I’d personally look at the following:

1. Currently, most enemies in dungeons tend to be Elites, which take a fair amount of time to kill for not necessarily better loot. Perhaps ANet can look at scaling down most of these enemies to Veterans, and most of the Champions to Elites (except for named foes, which always remain Champion or higher). Legendary foes in a dungeon (like Kholer) also get bumped down to Champion status unless they are particularly noteworthy foes from a lore or gameplay perspective. The boss at the end of dungeons is always a Legendary foe.

As a side benefit, this also makes foes less dangerous so there isn’t as much focus on “killing the enemy before they kill us” strategy which is why the Zerker meta is so powerful.

2. To buff the loot from foes, Veterans now always drop a Loot Bag appropriate for their race/type, plus possible additional loot. Elites will always drop a non-Exotic Champ bag, plus possible additional loot. (These changes apply to the open world too.)

3. Players can still “skip” dungeon events (I’m talking about bonus events as well as main events like fighting Kholer) if they really want to, but if they complete all of the dungeon’s events, they get a bonus daily chest containing 1+ Rares (with a chance for it to be an Exotic), coin and tokens. This chest is given out once per path per account per day.

4. Introduce a “Dungeon Conqueror” title for killing every single enemy in a dungeon path in a single run (aka “vanquishing” for you GW1 vets. ). You have to vanquish all paths in each of the dungeons to get this title. (Since enemies in dungeons do not respawn, this should be feasible where it wouldn’t be in the open world.)

But yeah, I find it extremely annoying that the recipes are account bound. No recipe should be account bound, IMO. I had guildies who kept on getting the Gossamer recipe and could only destroy them when they knew I wanted one so badly.

December Gem Promotion

I sympathise with the OP’s frustration. I was in a similar position myself, having spent a large sum of money buying gems in anticipation of the December sales, but because I bought them at the start of the Black Friday sales, I missed the cut-off date by just 2 days.

Eventually I just bought more gems during December anyway, as I can always hold the gems in reserve for when new stuff comes out, but then again, I have the disposable income to spare. Someone who’s on a much tighter budget wouldn’t have the same luxury, and THAT’S who I’m feeling for. They might be in a position where they just can’t afford to drop another $50 on gems two months in a row, and having to miss out on the special promotion due to that must be very frustrating.

Yes, but who knows? Perhaps the PvP skins will be given a “default” stat spread, or a selectable stat spread matched to the stats offered by the dungeon merchants. And even if they don’t, as Exotic items, who’s to say they won’t be salvageable for Ectos/Dark Matter? Or maybe we could even vendor them for a decent bit of coin.

Bottom line is the devs have told us to hang onto them, so I’m just spreading the word.

Don’t expect it until March at the earliest. The info from ANet has always been “once the current Living Story arc is concluded”, of which there are four more in the Scarlet story. The LS resumes on Jan 21st, so that’s 8 weeks before they’ll likely start rolling out the new major features. (And even then, don’t expect everything to be released in one big patch. EotM and Account Wide WXP will probably come first, since that’s been in the works for a while, followed by the PvP/PvE rewards merge, then other stuff.)

Of course, ANet could surprise us and release it earlier, but if you don’t get your hopes up too early, you won’t be disappointed.

Zerker Meta Gone? Great!

^ Unfortunately that is true. Players always gravitate to whatever is the easiest method that gives the greatest rewards. If the Zerker meta is destroyed, I give it a month, maybe less, before a new meta is found.

Ideally the game would be such that all builds are equally viable, or the differences are small enough that it does not matter. This requires constant balancing and adjustment as new content is released, however. It’s a TON of work, so for most games, it never becomes more than a pipe dream.

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

Heart of the Mists is the lobby; it’s a PvE zone. (And a free ticket back to LA, too.)

For anyone who’d like to get the world completion achievement, but really doesn’t like the idea of fighting players in WvW, you may be able to get some assistance from your server community.
For players on my server, Stormbluff Isle, there is a community website at http://www.stormbluffisle.com/ – you can ask for assistance on map completion in the WvW forums. We have quite a lot of PvE/WvW crossover guilds who can help out with map completion and the WvW jumping puzzles as well. It will take repeated visits as we never own the whole map all at once anymore, but you don’t have to do any PvP at all if you don’t want to. Got plenty of experienced WvW players and scouts who can keep you well clear of the trouble spots.

Oh, I know. But you can be certain that ANet wouldn’t just stop at making Heart of the Mists the only PvP mapping zone if they went ahead with that change. If they’re serious about using world completion to get people trying PvP, they’d definitely include points in actual PvP maps as well.

For anybody who’s mapping as well, I agree that following the zerg as it captures points is the easiest way to map. If you’re starting out, whenever you get a map of a different colour, map the following areas:

1. On your home Borderland map, everything up to and including the two Keeps in the Bay and Hills areas, but leaving stuff south of there.

2. On enemy Borderland maps, map the sections up to and including the Keep in the Bay/Hills area closer to your spawn point, if possible. Map the southern Camp and its environs if the opportunity presents itself.

3. In Eternal Battlegrounds, stick to mapping the areas closest to your Keep (the two camps and 4 Towers, along with the Mercenary Camp and skill point closest to your area). If your server manages to capture Stonemist Castle, get in there and map the 3 gates and grab the skill point and Vista while you have the opportunity. SMC tends to flip fairly regularly from my experience, so don’t dawdle!

I do both; one person pulls the striker towards the boss, the others slowly move the boss towards the striker. The problem with the Clockheart is that he frequently gets hung up on attacking one player or throwing gears if too many players get too far away from him, so to avoid him spawning more gears than necessary, the Clockheart doesn’t move very much. It’s fairly easy to pull the striker towards the boss if only one person aggroed him; once you’re close enough, use Push/Pull skills to get him next to the boss and kill him.

Map Completion - Metrics on Player Anger?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zaxares.5419

As a PvE’er who dislikes PvP, I’m kinda annoyed at ANet’s insistence on trying to push more people to do WvW or PvP (they wanted to add the Heart of the Mists for World Completion too!) I don’t particularly like fighting other players (aside from Activities like Keg Brawl or Southsun Survival), and I dislike having to constantly look over my shoulder when I’m mapping in hostile territory. It’s always a feeling of relief when I’m done and I can return to the safety of my Keep, which I don’t think is the experience ANet is hoping I would get from WvW.

That said, from a design perspective, I can totally understand why they’re doing it. Having more players doing more aspects of the game promotes game longevity, especially since PvP is a much bigger hook to keep players playing than PvE content is. There’s also the fact that designers take pride in their work and having a large segment of your game ignored by the majority of players must feel awful. (I’m thinking primarily of the sPvP segment, which I hear is practically deserted compared to PvE or even WvW.)

I just think there’s better ways to go about it. I think that splitting off PvE and WvW/PvP map completion would be a good first step. Why not have Tyria Map Completion and The Mists Map Completion as separate achievements? That way, if PvE completionists want to complete it without setting foot into WvW or PvP, they can, and likewise the WvW/PvP players who don’t want to do PvE can also get their bit done. You get one Gift of Exploration for completing either, so at the end of the day, you still get two Gifts.

How do players like emotes?

Zaxares.5419

I never gloat over killing another player. Well, almost. The one (and so far only) occasion I’ve done so was when I was in Obsidian Sanctum doing the JP. Ran into two FA players from the same guild at the section just before the well. They attacked me as soon as I got close, without any provocation. Well, OK. Maybe they thought they’d better get in the first attack in case I was going to backstab them.

I respawned, waited about 5 minutes for them to get further ahead in the JP, then started the run again. Turns out they decided to camp on the trap triggers in the section after the well. Despite ignoring them and doing my best to bypass them with mobility skills, they knocked me off the walls to my death.

Respawn again. I notice a Ranger from my server heading into the JP, so I decided I’d better follow. Sure enough, the two FA players are still there, and also attacking the Ranger while she was in a bad spot to defend herself. She gets downed and almost killed, but her pet manages to keep her alive. Then, one of the FA players makes the mistake of jumping down to try and finish her off. Since the FA players show no signs of being peaceful, I join the battle and down and stomp the second player. The Ranger and I then head back up the stairs to jump again, and the first FA player (a Thief) jumps down to try and gank me from behind. He fails and tries to run when the Ranger turns back to help me, but some snares ensure he can’t escape his coming punishment.

After we stomped him, I couldn’t resist spamming /laugh a few times. Serves him right for trying to slaughter peaceful, lone players. Not so tough once the odds and the terrain don’t favour you, huh?

As an addendum, we ran into a Maguuma player in the dark room afterwards. He was peaceful, so we let him be. :P (He was probably lucky that the FA pair didn’t catch up to him and kill him too.)
