I’m fine with cosmetic skins being locked behind skill, BUT I’m also fine with those same skilled players wanting to sell those skins if they don’t like it.

I earned Mini Liadri back in the first year and yeah, I’m proud of myself for having gotten it the hard way, but I’m not a mini collector, so if ANet had given me the opportunity to sell it for, I dunno, 200g or whatever mini collectors were willing to pay for it, I’d have sold it in a heartbeat.

Gaile, I don’t suppose you could confirm whether or not some loved favourites like Reaper’s Rumble or Ascent to Madness will be coming back this year? We would also love a way to reacquire stuff like the Mad Memoires backpiece; I have the burning version, but I dumped the basic version way back before the Wardrobe was introduced as I didn’t have the bank space to keep it at the time. I was really surprised that the higher version didn’t auto-unlock the basic version in the Wardrobe.

I personally wouldn’t mind if the 2012 Halloween skins came back either, although there’s none that I’m particularly interested in.

For me, I only ever intend on crafting ONE Ascended gear set, so my aim is to make it as generically useful as possible. This means I’m crafting a mixed armor set of various different stats, although I’ll be using Berserker for the chest piece and Sentinel for the leggings, so it leans a bit more towards offense. I’m still keeping several other armor sets for niche builds like conditions or healing, but I’ll just be using Exotic for those.

Well, the latest blog post suggests it’s an identical rehash of last year’s content:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/tyrias-point-of-no-return/

So we likely won’t see Reaper’s Rumble, Ascent to Madness, the Mad Memoires or old Halloween skins come back. (-sigh-)

We do know from the Ready Up video and leaked screenshots from China that the following things are new:

- New Halloween PvP reward track (unknown if this is permanent or temporary)
- New Halloween Collection (new icons in the screenshot suggest there are new Halloween utility consumables, and a new final reward)

Reportable. If I was the PUG in your group, you can bet I’d be reporting you for abuse of the LFG tool.

The only way you could cover yourself in this situation is if you posted straight up in your LFG: “Looking for 5th to stack kill Spider Queen. Please leave afterwards or you will be kicked.”

And if somebody still joined your group after that, well, they deserve what they get for not reading properly.

EDIT: Also, if your guildie is too weak/unskilled to stack kill the Queen, why not just fight her in the open? It takes, what, an extra 20 – 30 seconds to kill her that way? Unless you’re trying to break a speed clear record, I highly doubt that short an amount of time matters to you and your friends.

When I run a story mode (usually just for the daily), I’m always surprised when people who says it’s their first time don’t watch the cutscenes.

You’d be surprised how many players skip any and all cutscenes in ALL games. It’s not just for RPGs; shooters and other genres are notorious for this. This has sometimes resulted in some humorous situations where players who skipped the cutscene get stuck at certain points in the game because they skipped the part where an NPC informed them what they needed to do, or gave context for the situation.

Mob Mentality in Kessex Hills

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

It’s basic MMO player mentality. (Or basic human mentality, really.) People will always gravitate to the easiest, most profitable way of doing something. If that way happens to be deliberately failing an event that produces a large amount of Champions so the event respawns quickly, then that’s exactly what they will do.

I don’t feel like getting into a huge debate about it now, so I’ll just end this post with the following:

1. If you want to complete the event, go ahead and complete it. ANet will never, ever ban you for completing game content the way it was intended to be played.

2. Don’t be a troll. Completing the event once for the experience is fine. Even completing it multiple times if you’re in the area is fine. Completing it multiple times while mocking and insulting the players who want to farm the Champions is not fine. If you’re completing the events purely to spite the farmers, you’ve gone too far. Likewise, if you’re a farmer and you’re deliberately not completing the event when a player needs to complete it for a trait/Personal Story, you’ve also gone too far.

Karmic Converter Gizmo- Waste of Gold

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

I don’t have the Karmic Converter yet, but from what I’ve heard, this is how it works:

1. Every day it offers 3 random things you can convert your karma too. Possible options included Ascended mats (Dragonite/Empyreal etc.), Cores and Lodestones, and T6 mats.

2. You can pick only ONE of the 3 random things each day.

So every day, if you have excess karma, just open the Converter and see if there’s anything good on offer that day. If not, save your karma and wait another day.

You are not meant to use the forums as a direct advertising board to try and buy and sell items.

However, it is fine for people to discuss or point out emerging price trends or potential trading shifts that people might want to take advantage of.

For example, some screenshots from China suggest that there is a Halloween Collection coming with this week’s patch, involving consuming various Halloween foods and items. Prices for those, as well as their base ingredients, can be expected to jump when the patch hits as a result. (It doesn’t affect me as I have all the recipes for the foods anyway and I’ll just be crafting what I need from my own stockpiles.)

Trading Post Progressive Reform

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

I think the first idea would be too problematic to implement (at what line do we draw the “tax brackets”?), and it might very well drive sellers of very expensive items like Precursors to avoid the TP altogether, thus reducing supply and increasing grey market trading. For those reasons, I can’t support this idea.

The second idea is a bit more feasible, in that it would prevent stockpiles building up at price points that will never be met. (For example, sellers offering white salvage items at 15g apiece.) At the same time though, I don’t think the benefit it offers is worth redoing the TP scripting and dealing with potential new bugs or lost items that might occur.

If I come across two people fighting in the open field, I will immediately jump in and help my server mate UNLESS it’s obvious that it’s a duel (e.g. it’s in one of the well-known duel areas, I saw the /bow emotes, there’s other people standing around watching).

If I was wrong and my server mate then tells me to back off because it’s a duel, then I stop attacking and move on. Seriously, it’s that simple.

It’s kind of the opposite problem in T1. But on the other hand, T1 numbers are just SO massive that the lower ranked servers just can’t compete with us when they get matched up with us. Zaxares.5419

Officially, Ebonhawke does recognise Queen Jennah as their sovereign, but there are a lot of Ascalonian humans who do not feel that way. (They regard Jennah as a foreigner and not their true Queen.) As a result, while Ebonhawke is technically part of Kryta on paper, they are a largely autonomous region that Jennah rules with a very light hand. (The fact that Ebonhawke has its own separate delegation at the Peace Summit is ample proof of this.)

Wade Samuelsson is the “Duke” of Ebonhawke (although I’m unsure if that’s an official title), and I imagine that he probably has the freedom to levy taxes and make all military and legislative calls within Ebonhawke as he sees fit, although all the in-game lore suggests that he supports the peace initiative and greater integration with Kryta and he thus aligns his policies fairly closely with Kryta’s anyway.

rolling a dice is quite the contrary I think Anet wants to achieve… cooperative play, not being angry on your party-members (e.g. for getting something you did not get).

We occasionally see choice-rewards (choose 1 of these 3 items) which I would prefer. They could also add a random chance in there. Choose loot x1,y1,z1 or x2,y2,z2 or x3,y3,z3. (choose 3 in a line out of 9)

Having everyone in the party have access to the same loot would minimise anger towards other people, or the feeling to always be the unlucky one.

I agree. Let’s stay away from rolling for loot. The last thing we need is player animosity that another player “stole” the item you wanted. The game’s already been developing more of a toxic atmosphere over the last year; let’s not throw any more fuel on that fire.

I still say that the devs should return to the SAB loot system as a fair compromise for everybody. You have the chance to get rare loot from the end chests, but you can also accumulate tokens to buy those same items if you’re dedicated enough. The key difference here is that the ones purchased with tokens are account bound, so this doesn’t flood the market with them. Rather, it simply means that those players who really, really want a particular item are guaranteed to get it for their own use if they devote enough time to it, but they won’t be able to resell it.

The rewards for tokens should also be diverse enough that people who don’t necessarily want the skins from a particular game mode can also gain something of value from participating in it. For example, while the main offering of SAB were the various skins, you could also trade Baubles for Obsidian Shards. This could perhaps be expanded to things like Experience Tomes (to keep in with the theme of “edutainment”) or crafting materials.

While I do think that the mobs not even attacking you if you just range the carrier from 1200 range is a bit of a cheese method and should be adjusted, I see no problem with having the ledge there. The way I see it, the devs probably intended to allow a spot for ranged characters to attack the carrier (otherwise why even have that ramp leading up to the top level?) in relative safety, but the dredge need a way of being able to still attack characters attacking from range.

Uhh, that light-golem is just a Veteran, not a Champion. Unless he scales up to a Champion when enough people are around?

In any case, from the times I’ve fought him I find him extremely easy to deal with. His really damaging attack is the fire field; just keep on moving and you should be fine. His Sun Beam attack also does more damage the closer you are to him, so a ranged weapon is ideal. If he throws that black hole at you, dodge forward and run the other direction so you’re not caught within the pull field. (The one time the light golem did manage to down me was when I happened to get caught in his pull field while still trapped within the fire field.) You can ignore his Sun Dash attack; it looks scary, but it’s basically just a gap closer that doesn’t deal any damage.

EDIT: I just realised there is another light-golem boss in the Inquest lab to the west. Is that what you’re talking about?

Halloween Event: a Broken Record

in Living World

I kinda liked the insults actually…

Oh, don’t get me wrong. The dialogue was hilarious, but it felt… insufficient? The Bloody Prince is supposed to be a violent psychopath who even the Mad King felt was out of control, but he just… yells threats at his father once he’s actually out? I felt there should have been more, like the Labyrinth periodically turns into a zone-wide PvP thing where players choose sides between the Mad King or the Bloody Prince, and then try to launch attacks on each other. It eventually culminates in one side or the other storming the other’s stronghold and allowing the King/Prince to fight it out with player assistance. Whoever wins temporarily takes over the Labyrinth, with the loser disappearing for 30 mins and vowing vengeance.

Yeah, ANet seems to be balancing difficulty towards the hardcore of the player spectrum. Undoubtedly there was a lot of players to whom 10,000 candy corns were barely a challenge to farm. However for us more casuals it was kinda unreasonable… In fact a lot of content (particularly RNG) seems balanced towards the insane hardcore farmer players…

Even the hardcore farmers thought that 10k Candy Corn was a ridiculous ask. The only way a player could actually obtain that many Candy Corn within the Halloween period was to buy extra supply from the TP. In fairness to ANet, I can see what they were trying to do; they wanted to provide a massive sink for candy corn that would take it all out of the economy, but to the players, they saw the situation (and it certainly felt like it) as a “these items are only for the rich TP barons who can buy whatever they need. If you’re casual, tough luck!” snub.

In fairness, game economist said the candy corn thing was a miscalculation. There was a lot of candy corn in people’s banks, but he got the distribution wrong, meaning he thought there was more available than there actually was.

Not exactly. His exact words were “we made the sinks too hard to interact with”. Meaning that they’re not backing down on wanting something to take out the millions of Candy Corn in the game (and again, from a game developer perspective this is the right thing to do), but the extremely high amounts needed meant that each individual player felt discouraged from even trying.

One possible way they could have gone about it is instead have small sinks that consumed, say, 25 Candy Corn in exchange for a Trick or Treat bag (or a special version of it for 100 Candy Corn). That bag, in turn, has a loot table that can range from small amounts of Candy Corn (10) to more expensive goodies (Cobs, Halloween recipes) to stuff that’s really valuable, like the 2012 Halloween skins. I’m willing to bet my Ascended mat stockpile that players would consume Candy Corn by the tens of thousands to gamble for stuff like the Greatsaw again.

WoW is the success story it is because it’s perfected many of the sneaky addictive mechanisms to hook players in and keep them playing. Notice how Blizzard has never announced plans for a WoW 2? That’s because they don’t want two games competing for their own massive player base. They even canceled their mysterious Project Titan MMO for likely the same reason. And the players themselves have invested so much time and energy into WoW that the thought of dropping it all and leaving is frankly terrifying to them.

Games like Guild Wars are catering to a different audience, the ones who don’t want the game to be about gear treadmills and running raids over and over and over for a 0.02% chance to get that new gear you want. (Although arguably, GW2 is heading down that path now.)

GW1’s massive skill options was fun, yes, but there was also a downside. It made balancing a real headache, and to be honest, outside of a small selection of top tier skills, the vast majority of skills were never, ever used. Orison of Healing was the baseline heal skill to which all other healing skills were compared, but no Monk worth his salt EVER carried it on his bar. (If he did, it was a dead giveaway that you were dealing with a newbie.)
